    Anyone else have trouble viewing these in Chrome? Like the thumbnail/viewer loads, but when you press play it just fades away. Mousing over shows the frame, but no video ever loads?

    I will commend the fact that they are still using suits. That is awesome. That’s why I wish Toho would just make a new Godzilla movie in time for 2014. Sure, some American company is making one, but who knows how that’ll turn out (look at the last one), and besides…it’s TOHO, we want a REAL Godzilla movie from them for his 60th Birthday. Plus I still wish Toho would give up the ghost and just consent to finally do a Godzilla vs. Gamera movie like they supposedly had offers to do back in the 70s, but refused because they didn’t want to work with the competition. If done right, it could be amazing, and neither monster would have to “lose”, just have them fight a bunch, neither one really wins, then have an evil monster show up that they have to team up and fight: BAM, instant reward for all fans everywhere. But alas…..Anyways, I honor Japan for both keeping the tradition of Tokusatsu alive, as well as traditional HAND DRAWN animation. I may not like all of it personally, in fact I probably don’t personally like a majority of it. But I still love that they keep it alive, where as in the US almost everything, even kids’ TV cartoons, are almost all CG these days. It’s sad. In this guy’s view, practical special effects and hand drawn cell animation will always be better.

    Wow, Mike… certainly an interesting review. I don’t think this film’s out in Europe, so I have very little chance of seeing it… but it certainly appears to be a very different and unique movie. :) “Fuck you” – no thanks, I don’t bend that way. :) Keep the reviews coming, Mike.

       @Swevicus Well… There was a UK release in early 2011, and Germany got a release, too. About any other EU releases, I don’t know, but an UK import would be pretty much fool-proof.

    I watched these Japanese movies like “Toyko Gore Police”, “Vampire Girl VS Frankenstein Girl” and “Robogeisha” but I cannot really say anything good about them… Effects are too bad. Looks too much like an amateur movie and I just don’t feel good thinking I paid for this… It’s a bit boring and the blood is so fake that you can’t even feel disturbed when you see it… Well yes, you feel disturbed about the bad quality of the visual effects that’s it and the fact that you’ve paid to watch this crap.

    hahaha I’ve seen this one! Yeah it is entertaining and the ninja fights are pretty cool, but it’s also got it’s typical silly japanese humor and effects that makes it quite awkward. It’s funny that not all ninja and/or alien movies are all that serious. :P

    OOH OOH if you want some horrid movies to watch, my fave crappy kung fu movies are “crippled masters” and “chinese super ninja 2″. every time i have friends watch them they cant stop laughing, crippled masters is not P.C. at all, and yes, the 2 crippled men interlock and fight like some crazy crippled voltron.

    Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl made me think “Japanese, when wierd does not begin to descripbe it”. especially the ending.
     
    Well you know we had Aliens And Cowboys, and this is Aliens and Ninjas.
     
    I hate rubber costumes for a single reason – thier full of humans. i want to see aliens, not a human with makeup. And if it takes a CGI to do it then so be it.

       @Strazdas So if I understand what you’re saying, you prefer to see an actor fight like crap because the monster will be rendered afterwards via CG (because the actor is essentially fighting nothing in front of the camera).  No, I prefer costumes simply because the actors actually LOOK AT the monsters…  Jurrassic Park vs Jurrassic Park 3…  The T-Rex is a billion times more impressive simply because he’s there, right in their face.

         @SsJVasto Um…you do understand that motion-capture would allow the actor to fight another actor that they could later replace with a CGI monster, right? With the right choreography you can do a pretty convincing job, especially if the thing you’re fighting is essentially humanoid in figure as the aliens are in this flick. Not that I disagree with you. Practical effects are always more impressive to me, but CGI has its place as well and shouldn’t just be dismissed offhand like it always seems to be, especially around here. Hell, some of the modern movies that we all love wouldn’t be possible today without CGI, or would look a hell of a lot more like high-budget home-videos without it.

         @Cyberxion You mentioned modern action movies with big CGI usage that we all love and I ask you to name some and you can’t. You fail. 
         
        Two great movies that effectively used CGI are T2 and True Lies. In T2 the T 1000′s wounds were CGI and in True Lies they used CGI and green screens very effectively.

    This movie is AMAZING!! I was lucky enough to see it and Robo Geisha in theatres at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival here in Toronto Canada back in 2010…… They threw packs of gummy bears at the crowd before the movie….it was awesome!!!

    Now I love me some b-films and other trash cinema. I never even heard of any of those movies you review. Which sorta makes it less fun to watch. 
    Because, yeah the movies are really bad. Cheesy acting, bad effects, stupid story, …
     
    Nothing wrong with that, but would love to see some better known cult films. Maybe even some good ones. Or movies that tried to be good, but failed.
    None of these movies I got the feeling “Hmm, that’s a movie I wanna see”
     
    Now the best part of the show is Motherfucker Mike himself, cuz he’s funny and has good screenpresence

    Both you (mike) and james are way too biased and hateful towards CGI, which I personally find a bit offensive, knowing how much work goes into proper CG: it’s true that there is a lot of shit. But bullets is the way to use CG right? I love Alien as much as the nxt guy, but I honestly think guys in suits look awful most of the time, and you have no idea how much CG is used everywhere in almost every modern film. See that crowd in the bagground in some random film? prolly cg, see those buildings, that horizon? CG

       @mamastoast A crowd that is rendered with CGI is lifeless. There’s no point except as a placeholder. CGI needs to derive from something real for it to work for me.

      Thats the right way to use CGI. Streets and backgrounds, non interactive scenery. I must say that I am not a big fan of rubber suits myself, but its always so noticeable when actors makebelieve interact with CGI.
       
      Also CGI IS the easy way out. The reason why so many backgrounds are rendered in CGI is because its so much cheaper than shooting on location. Same goes for practical efects. Those tend to be expensive if done right and are more restrictive.

       @WilliamMunnyOutlaw Yes and no. I still hold that a lot of people just automatically hate on CG because it’s cg and have some delusion that it’s the “easy way out”. EVer since george lucas messed up the prequels people just hate CG overall, which annoys me. I agree that, fx the prequels were waaaay to focused on showing off tech and fancy stuff instead of telling a story. But on the other hand, CG let’s you do amazing stuff in your movie, and just because, say the monster, your your movie is CG, doesn’t lessen the value at all.

    I have this movie on dvd (feels weird to actually have seen one of these movies BEFORE you review it) and it’s a fun romp. But I think the ninja vs ninja fights are the strengths in this movie. The alien stuff is ok, but not really much more. I want to see these guys make a pure ninja flick. THat’d be awesome because they have real good choreography (as you said).

    I like the fact that the aliens aren’t cg.
    But they could have used a more colorfull skin-texture.
    This gray looks like an untextured gc model. It doesn’t really look like cg, but it makes you think about cg for a moment.
    Still looks worth checking it out. I gonna put it in my list.

    The alien looks like something you’d see at a child’s Halloween party and the fight scenes are a fuck’n joke!
     
    The worst was the “head-hat” that the guy in the alien suit wears; it’s so piss poor.
    You can sooo tell that the guy’s looking through holes in the neck as opposed to a camera in the alien’s eye and a small monitor in front of the actors face.
     
    It worked for Big Bird!

    CGI looks fake? Nothing could look faker than those cheap rubber alien costumes. I lived in Japan – they sell that shit to the general public at all Don Quixote department stores. 25 bucks a suit, tops.

       @crankycarrot The very fact that CGI is nothing more then an animated series of images rendered on a computer as oppose to an actual suit which exists in three dimensions will always make it more fake looking then a suit. With CGI there is nothing really there, its just trick photography. With suits or stop-motion or animatronics you have an actual prop which exists in physical space. That’s the difference.

       @wolfdribble Yea I saw this movie with my brother, and the action sequences/whole movie were really awesome.  I have yet to see Robo Geisha, or Tokyo Gore Police.  Have always noticed them on netflix, but didn’t want the heart break of seeing a bad movie in that genre, have seen too many of them.  To hear that these might be different, is awesome.

    Actualy, it’s been a while since i watch Tokyo gore police and Machine girl but to my recolection, the blood was real (I mean material fake blood, not CG blood) Only Robogeisha have those “bad CGI blood effect”.  I also prefer the  non- CGI monster . Btw, nice review

    I just watched this movie last night and it’s a lot of fun.
     
    There’s still quite a bit of CG in it but they use it effectively. Similar to Robogeisha, it’s more of a cut-and-paste “Photoshop clipart” CGI instead of rendered polygons from a 3d program. It looks really fake but it’s intentionally fake and gives it a unique visual quality.
     
    Mix that some really good cheesy practical special effects and some kick ass fights scenes and you have a really enjoyable movie. Good stuff!!

    I’m pretty sure the gore from the other movies are supposed to be intentionally stylized. Complaining about it is like complaining that the movie Sin City looks fake.Both other than that, great review, I absolutely loved the fight scenes. Also, the ninjas looked really awesome.

    Hey Mike, have you ever seen the movie “FrankenHooker”?  It was directed by Frank Henenlotter, and as you can tell from the title, it was fucking ridiculous.  I found it one day in the pawn shop years ago when I was still in high school, and I knew I had to buy it.  Anyway, I think you should watch it if you haven’t.

    Seems like a nice Sunday pic. The bodysnatchers-Goa’uld-Lovecraftian kind of monsters, steering their human puppets, has become somewhat cliché in sci-fi movies, but I like the theme. Nice to see a lot of blood and action done well. Thats my cup o’ tea!

    I agree, less CGI is always better :) I love how you rate a movie based on the fact that they are crappy B movies, and you look for features that would be appealing to others that like B film.

       @newmadhatter I sure as hell appreciate a good SFX master like Savini, Harryhausen and others. It’s a real art and they do amazing work. Good ole fashion stop motion, trick angles, miniatures, all that should never be replaced. That being said, CGI has a very well deserved spot in film. It really depends on the movie. I appreciate good CGI also. I mean image Spiderman 3 with no CGI. Or Avatar (although that’s a good film, I think it’s overatted). Both are useful in the industry and as long as there’s a balance between CGI and old fashioned, skilled SFX artists, they both are great.

    i’ve actually seen this movie, at this point its been at least a good year or two since I last saw it. I’ve also seen Machine Girl, but I’ve never been much into the whole blood-and-guts things. Although, I must admit RoboGeisha, just by the mere title, sounds really interesting. I am a big fan of ninja movies which is why I ended up seeing Alien vs. Ninja in the first place. I agree with Mike that the choreography was good and I too prefer having a guy in a rubber costume than some cheesy CGI character. overall I think the movie was a fun movie to watch, and a fun movie for anyone who likes aliens, ninjas, gore, or all the above.
