I’d love to explore the mysteries of gaming in that treasure trove.

@Jingleboy If I just had money to burn, I think one thing I would probably do, is build up a collection like this. Not QUITE like that. I wouldn’t bother with some of the real crap he’s been sent or gotten over the years like the CDi or some of the old Colecovisions or whatever. But I would bulk up my NES and SNES collection, try to get a working old Game Boy and get more games for that, Master System, Genesis, Atari 2600, probably a Saturn, stuff like that. Just to have them. I mean, my friend and I have a pretty decent NES and SNES collection, and even N64 going on. But only a fraction of that. Man…..to say that you pretty much literally own every NES title ever release in the NA, and some even from Japan and EU……crazy.

@Devil_Rising  @Jingleboy If I had the money I’d probably get a Saturn or Dreamcast, never owned either but they seem interesting

        @WildFO @Devil_Rising @Jingleboy
I owned both and they weren’t.

        @Devil_Rising @Jingleboy
Wait this is your dream? Umm that can easily be attained for probably a couple hundred dollars at most.
Or you could use emulators and have access to literally any old game ever made on almost any system for free.

Honestly, I’m all for Star Wars 3D rereleases. I’ve seen The Phantom Menace 3D, and I believe it has plenty of potential with the later entries. At least, it gives me the chance to see Star Wars on the big screen just for the experience.

Ah yes, the Sega 3D Glasses.  I had these as a kid, but the only 3D game I had was Missile Defense 3D.  It was pretty cool, you got to use both the 3D glasses and the light gun.

    • johnathanhauck

      February 29, 2012 at 9:23 pm

@Lady3Jane79 Same here, I think that was the game that came bundled. Don’t remember if the light gun came bundled or if we already had one.

  • RetroRepair

    February 29, 2012 at 8:59 pm

That TV might have something to do with it, it works better on older TVs. I actually think this works better than any other 3D I’ve seen. Was way ahead of it’s time.

    • Devil_Rising

      February 29, 2012 at 9:59 pm

@RetroRepair  Kind of like how old Light Zapper type controllers are useless with flatscreen tvs? At first I just thought the old light guns had worn out. Turns out, nope, they were just made to work with round-screened tvs.

  • Devil_Rising

    February 29, 2012 at 10:02 pm

3D was a huge fad when it first came out in the 50s. Then it faded out. It became a huge fad again in the 80s, around 86 or so when I went to Disneyland and saw Captain EO. But then it faded out. Certainly there’s something to be said for the new 3D technology being a lot better, and of course IMAX has been around since before this new fad took hold. But I still feel (and honestly kind of hope, personally, that it fades out again. It won’t ever truly make movies “better”, and it will never honestly be anything more than a gimmick. Maybe not as cheap a gimmick as it was in the past. But still just a gimmick.

one day those will be out again, but this time most likely a blue tooth? or atleast they will be the same size and shape as regular glasses.  really all that needs to be developed is a wireless conection between console/battery/game to the video/audio in the glasses

  • stargrovestamos

    March 1, 2012 at 12:17 am

I wonder if this works at all like the 3D dvd set I have. There used to be a Japanese Laserdisc format entitled VHD where 3D movies like Dial M For Murder, House Of Wax and Friday the 13th part 3D were released on this format except, instead of stereoscopic Red and Blue 3D it was anaglyph 3D with clear glasses that you would electronically hook up to the player and would digitally pull the two fields together. It worked great on standard televisions but not on flat screens, using the curvature of the screen to its advantage.
Sometime in the early 2000s there were a handful of direct to dvd b movies that were produced specifically for a 3D dvd viewing system that basically used the same technology. I have a rip of the Friday the 13th part 3 VHD formatted to this system and it works great!

    • March 1, 2012 at 1:25 am

       @stargrovestamos
I wish Paramount would spend the money to release a 3D Blu-Ray version of Friday the 13th Part 3. I remember seeing it in 3D in the theater, and NOTHING has ever come close to how awesome the 3D was back then.

I definitely play Zaxxon with these to this day

  • March 1, 2012 at 1:20 am

The 3D wasn’t all that bad for the Master system. Blu-ray 3D now is only marginally better. I remember Missile Defense 3D and Maze Hunter 3D were the best 3D games on the Master System. As James said, it’s better than the Rad Racer Red & Blue crap.

It’s funny how Nintendo, Sega, and Sony have all toyed with 3D for YEARS. Now, all these years later, it’s finally all come together in the 3DS.

I fucking love the 3DS btw.

@MichealKing george lucas said that the 3d thing with the new trilogy would be the last thing with his older movies. If thats true we should (almost) all good! Infact there are already rumors that he is making a new feature.

    • c64kicksass

      March 1, 2012 at 10:45 am

@MichealKing He’d better rewrite and reshoot Episodes 1-3 to make them as good as Episodes 4-6  (although this will never happen)

I just want to say that I feel very sorry Mrs. Nerd. Some of you guys are such fucking assholes. She took what appears to be quite some time to write something to us that she thought would be fun and you guys shoot her the fuck down? Trash her, mock her, degrade her? If you were true fans of James Rolfe you wouldn’t give the person he plans on spending his entire life with so much shit, as if it doesn’t matter. It fucking does. He’s not gonna remain indifferent to something like that. You’re undoubtedly hurting both of them. You aren’t just awful fans, you’re awful people. When someone is trying to be nice to you, bringing no harm to anyone, you don’t give them that kind of reception. You just don’t.

@Kaleidoscopic God I doubt the comments hurt her and she doesn’t really guva a flying fuck about them anyway. She rises above them and ignores them. After her first posting, so many guys were negative to her. In her second posting she seemed to have ignored them as she didn’t address any of the comments and simply talked about the topics at hand. The first post was titled “Mrs. Nerd Speaks” and the second one “Mrs.Nerd Responds”. If James feels that this negativity directed towards his wife is too much I’m sure he would let us know in a video posting.

      • Kaleidoscopic God

        March 1, 2012 at 7:12 am

@gamez You could be right, but acting like you don’t care isn’t the same as not caring. I wouldn’t take this feedback well, I know that much for sure. Either way, I’m sure James is bothered by the fans seeming annoyed by his wife. Among many other things, he must be thoroughly disappointed.

I thought this was a legit video review on the 3d glasses… Instead I got small-talk and an abrupt ending… I am trying to stay away from this site until the movie is complete in the hopes the website will get the attention it used too. This could have been saved and used in a much more worthwhile way in a future “AVGN” but I feel silly even saying that. I feel like ignoring the nerd episodes for so long while working on the movie is going to mean one of two things. The film is not going to focus on the Nerd like we all thought and instead will be more about the actual James Rolfe and his back-story… OR it will be about the nerd as expected, and only the die-hard fans who could maintain an interest in a series that seems dead in the water will be buying the film. (hopefully not the case)

I am not trying to be a little troll and say More AVGN! I fully understand how the project could become tiresome, trite, and overdone to the artist. But I also think it is James’s claim to fame whether he likes to admit it or not. And “AVGN” is in my opinion the best possible viral marketing he could possibly have for his future movie project. It brings in the viewers! I started out with AVGN and later moved on to watch all his horror reviews and indie films. And I enjoyed them exponentially! BUT!!! It is just as disheartening to see that James clearly has a case of “Spock Syndrome” where he seems tired of the one thing that got him his acclaim. That and his tireless work and effort of course!

I am still a fan and still have faith the site will return to its former glory AND I have faith that no matter what. The film will be a vision of James’s. And that alone is worth witnessing. That creative spark is what inspired many of my newer hobbies, and rekindled a few old ones!

If James can just have fun with the AVGN series like he clearly used to… Instead of making each new episode bigger and better than the next just focus on the game and not the video itself. James is naturally talented and now has fame and standards. But that does not mean you have to stop having fun!

Sure us fans are loudmouths and jerks with kind and nasty things to say… But before we were around it was just James and a fun idea that grew and grew. Keep that idea your own and always let it be what YOU want it to be. Not us. It might bring back some of the fun that was lost along the way…

@DaveMcGrath This is from the DVD special features. Might as well have a few nice filler bits while James is busy working on the film. Mike is doing a great job with MFM and Game Glitches. Besides, this is Cinemassacre.com, not AVGN.com.

    • BrandonSmith

      March 1, 2012 at 9:21 am

@DaveMcGrath 1. James has stated a thousand times that it will be about the Nerd character going out into the world, so saying that it’s gonna be another James Rolfe backstory thing, even though he’s moved out to California and begun casting and location scouting for a feature film about the character makes this option pretty unlikely. He’s also stated that if you want a “cinematic” Nerd episode, reminiscent of the movie, check out the Rob the Robot or Nintendo World Championships episode.
More Nerd episodes would be great marketing if it weren’t for the fact that he’s still got to film the movie, itself, which is both time-consuming and expensive. Maybe he’ll do some small Nerd videos during the marketing phase of the project and make appearances in other videos. That’d be great.
He’s obviously /not/ tired of the character, because he’s essentially putting together an entire film production based on the character, which isn’t an easy thing to do, and to make an entire feature film with a quarter-million dollar budget *funded by fans* is a pretty ridiculous thing to do if you want to get away from said character.
Lastly, he makes his videos bigger and better not because he feels he has a standard to set, but because he wants to make them bigger and better, because he’s always said he’s a filmmaker before a gamer and that’s his passion in life.
Have faith in James, because he will deliver something truly epic :D
Also, wordy posts for the win? Probably not.

That aside I also hope for the best when the movie is finally finished.

Thanks you for being clever and not just jumping down my throat for posting something other than “I WUV IT” I cant stand when folks rage at a post that is something other than repetitive ass-kissing.        @DaveMcGrath first off, the movie is going to be very much focused on the nerd, not james. the comparison he always makes is wayne’s world from snl to the wayne’s world movie. secondly, it’s a pair of fucking 3D glasses, what else is there to say? and did you not just see that 15 minute long review of the VR stuntmaster? sheesh how needy are you?

What’s next after 3D? I’ve read that Avatar 2 and The Hobbit might be filmed at 48 or perhaps even 60 frames per second. The higher frame rate is supposed to make motion silky-smooth and more lifelike; it’s also supposed to help alleviate the headaches that people get from stereoscopic 3D. Speaking of 3D, I’ve also heard of a prototype video screen that displays a true 3D image, as opposed to a 2D-based optical illusion. OLEDs are coming down in price, so some TVs are going to get thinner, lighter, and sport amazing contrast ratios.

    • Kaleidoscopic God

      March 1, 2012 at 12:08 pm

@kane117 I’m just afraid that the frame rate is going to make it look/feel like a reality show.

        March 2, 2012 at 3:06 am

@Kaleidoscopic God I know what you mean. Film at 24fps has a beautiful, polished look to it, and I’m afraid that its beauty will be stripped away by higher frame rates. However, James Cameron has said that the traditional aesthetic of film can be preserved by adjusting the shutter. I don’t know much about film cameras, but if filmmakers can go up to 60fps and still preserve the classic look of film, I’m all for it.

    • Lhorkan

      March 1, 2012 at 2:49 pm

@kane117 School always told me the human eye can’t process more than 24 FPS; will the higher frame rate really make much of a difference?

      • kane117

        March 2, 2012 at 3:39 am

@Lhorkan American movies are shot at 24fps and most American television is shot at 30fps. If you’ve watched an American news broadcast or an American sports broadcast, you’ve seen what 30fps looks like. The 30fps frame rate typically used for television is closer to what the real world looks like to our eyes, whereas the 24fps standard for film has a smooth, polished look to it that’s not exactly true to life. To see the difference that higher frame rates make, do a Google search for “15 FPS vs. 30 FPS vs. 60 FPS” and click on the first result. Make sure you have Adobe Flash Player installed to see the animations.

    • EliJeannineDirkx

      March 1, 2012 at 4:18 pm

@kane117 As with video games, higher frame rates always make it feel smoother.
Though my complaint with this, as @Kaleidoscopic God also said, it might just feel like a reality show instead.

    • DaveMcGrath

      March 2, 2012 at 5:52 pm

@stickshaka A dreamcast review would be cool but unexpected. It was a pariah console but it was fairly modern compared to the usual classic turds James played most of the time. That does not mean I would not love to see a review on the system and a few games. I poured so many hours into Soul Calibur and Toy Commander!

      • maple-shaft

        March 2, 2012 at 10:18 pm

@DaveMcGrath Mon Dieu!  The Dreamcast was not a pariah, it was an AWESOME console!  It featured Shenmue, one of the first big budget open world adventure games and laid the groundwork for an entire genre of modern games after it.  Also Skies of Arcadia was a masterpiece and one of the most original and inspiring RPG’s I have ever played.

      • March 3, 2012 at 12:35 am

@maple-shaft Pariah doesn’t mean bad, it means outcast. Maybe that is a fair word to define the Dreamcast, a system far less successful than it deserved.

      • RyanSanders

        March 3, 2012 at 5:35 am

@Stormwatch  @maple-shaft Dreamcast, isn’t/wasn’t that bad.. I never had one when they came out (now I own around 5) but recently got into it.The one unique thing was that controller and memory module which also served as a portable unit to upgrade and whatnot in certain games.

  • StevenMiranda

    March 3, 2012 at 1:27 am

Never had the glasses, but when i bought my SMS in may of 2010, i only had the unit which plugged onto the console. As for 3D games, i ended up getting Missile Defense 3-D which required them, but even without the 3D glasses, i can practically reach up to 300,000 or more. As for the idea of the game, this pretty much was the forerunner to Friday the 13th’s game over screen, because if one missile hit it’s destination, the screen would spaz out like crazy and would give you this message: “One missile reached East/West City. That’s all it takes. Game Over” and for it’s time, it showed that Sega didn’t fuck around by sugarcoating the truth when it came to depicting a strong anti-nuclear war message with this game (and SDI – Strategic Defense Initiative/Global Defense).

Sweet, the segae 3d glasses is one of the first memories I have of my SMS. I had space harrier 3d and missile defense 3d and loved playing both of them, they had major replay value for a 7 year old. Space harrier had a code for the high score initials that would turn off the 3d and it was still a fun game, for the mid 80′s. I remember the side piece broke off the glasses, my friends and I would take turns holding them up to eachothers faces while we played. The glasses where too heavy to fix with tape. I loved the review guys, can’t wait to see whats next. Neo-Geo maby???

  • BillCosby

    March 4, 2012 at 3:46 pm

The future I believe is stereoscopic glasses. Having a 3d virtual headset with a screen for each eye, so u space apart the images the two screens get spaced apart just like the distance between both your eyes and you’ll experience depth in a video game. Then you add a infrared face tracking camera so it knows which way youre looking and a gaming device controller like a gun and when you look at the gun you see a rendered model with textures that that game has setup to be the weapon u have. You could even place some type of clip on objects to ur body that could track some simple motion. That is the future of gaming worlds. Using hardware that allows you to completely enter the gaming reality.

      • BillCosby

        March 12, 2012 at 1:15 am

@Kaleidoscopic God i enjoy language and doing things properly but all i care about is correct spelling. everyone knows how to spell you. so i just shorten it. plus i am always talking on youtube and dealing with character limits so im used to shortening things as much as possible on the net. your and you’re or ur or u’re is ok with me. but when people use ur and u’re wrong it makes me cringe though.

they already have these technologies out there, they just dont believe theyre viable. plus businesses run on the idea of planned obsoletion so the big companies probably want to milk as much money out of current technology before we get into very futuristic gaming devices. another part is the cost. they have head mounted displays for 300 bucks now but i dont know how well they work. ive tried the flickering glasses the old models, not nvidia 3d vision. but i dont want flicker glasses no matter how good they get, i want to see what two seperate screens would be like.

@Marky94 thanks for the vote of confidence. i would love to work in video games some day. i live in ohio though and not many game companies are out here. ive been playing games my whole life though and im 30 now. and all i play now is pc games using a razer hydra. i freaking love battlefield 3, i use a joystick for flying in that game but on foot or in land vehicles i use my razer hydra. check it out, its an amazing controller for games. its like a wiimote but for pc but it uses magnets instead of an infrared sensor bar. its $140 with portal 2 and dlc map pack u can only play with the hydra because u move objects in 3d space and stretch them with ur hands. its pretty wild.

      @BillCosby
A much simpler mechanism is a helmet, inside is a screen (the screen must have a resolution of over 1080p in 3D mode in order to match that of the human eye, ~300 MP/4060p) make that a parralax barrier like the 3DS, movement in game woulf require feedback only from your hand via blutooth/gyroscope gloves (like using the force)

@binghamkolby  @BillCosby two screens will allow u to distinguish depth inside the game though. thats the point of stereoscopic 3d vision  ur brain knows a flat screen in front of ur eye is flat. if u had two seperate screens and the images rendered were spaced slightly apart from one another the exact distance between each eye the effect would be amazing.

I’ve never actually seen these in action before. I wear glasses and I can’t see the TV screen without them unless I’m really close. I’ve heard people say that the movie theatre 3D glasses are uncomfortable over prescription glasses. So I can’t imagine how weird the Master System glasses must feel.

I was about 7 or so when I got the 3D glasses. I played Zaxxon 3D but the glasses didn’t help. It DID display in 3D, but the perspective in the channel and layout of enemies made it difficult to see what you were getting close to and if a projectile was about to hit you or not. The black starry background didn’t help because it emphasized the double vision that one may get.

Space Harrier 3D on the other hand was the MOST AWESOME TRIP!!! The glasses really helped me to see which enemies were closer and what was about to hit me.

It is true that you have to sit closer to the screen to see better and for it to be more effective. How the 3D works is how current battery-operated 3D glasses work. When your eye is supposed to see the right side of an object, the left eye sight gets blacked out. When you see the left, the right gets blacked out. (This causes a flicker, noticeable at lower frame rates.) Instead of seeing both sides at the same time, there is a fraction of a second difference, but it’s so fast our brains see the two images as one. If you tilt your head the illusion stops working.

The Sega glasses used polarized LCD technology to block your vision. (Think LCD screen calculators) Since the blockage wasn’t 100% opaque- the vision is darkened but not completely blocked- you can see a ghosting/ double images.

@Adrastia The Sega glasses are front heavy! It’d be nice if they had a back strap to them, like on goggles, so they wouldn’t keep slipping down the nose. Here’s an example of what I had to do as a kid: Big prescription glasses secured to my face with thick glass straps. 3D glasses secured to my prescription glasses with rubber bands.

Here in Brazil Sega Master System was very popular. I remember when I used this glasses for the first time, it was a great experience. You could use the glass with Light Phaser Pistol at the same time on determined games like Missile Defender 3D. Awesome!
