AVGN: What Was I Thinking (2006)

Mike / February 23rd, 2012

This was the Making Of from the AVGN Volume One DVD from 2006.

Not to be confused with “The Making Of The Angry Video Game Nerd” which was Episode 102 from 2011. You can see that HERE.

Classic Nerd at its finest. : )

As I said before, come next month, I’ll be buying all 5 volumes and probably even a shirt or two. Stay strong, James, and don’t give up. : )

  • February 23, 2012 at 8:38 pm

Very cool! I gotta say James I have often said to some Fanboys “Uhm, you know the NERD is just a character right? James is a film maker and the AVGN though his most popular and well known character is just one thing James does” I have also pointed many to this site. Now instead of wasting my time I will simply direct them to this video, if they don’t “GET IT” after that then i give up lol! Thanks for doing this.

    February 23, 2012 at 8:51 pm

Thanks for the videos, James. You’re right.  These videos are a lot of fun because so many of us have gotten so pissed at so many games (wow, lotta “so”s!).  My older brother got so angry that he’d pound the living hell out of the console!  We actually went through some 6 or 7 Nintendos because of that.Hope the movie’s going well!

  • LicaWolf

    February 23, 2012 at 8:58 pm

I like how he talks about the Nerd as just one of his characters and projects, instead of talking about the Nerd as himself.

If you think about it, this video not only documents how the style of the Nerd came to be, but it’s also a part of the history of how the whole internet videogame review genre came to be like it is today, since the Nerd style influenced so many people.

    • Fio Germin

      February 23, 2012 at 9:03 pm

@LicaWolf great observation, and its as you say the style every reviewers use today. its nice to see how james helped forming this style of reveiwing, also james good luck with the movie i forgot to mention that

Yeah, I’ve already seen this video on the Volume 1 DVD, but there it’s longer, it has 13 minutes. Here it got 10 minutes. Why did you cut out those 3 minutes? Mike was speaking there too.

    • Fio Germin

      February 23, 2012 at 9:07 pm

@ZdendaCZ mabey he didnt wanted to give away all the parts of this bonus from the DVD and let them discover that in the bonus when they purchase the dvd’s

  • Shadowtheman

    February 23, 2012 at 9:12 pm

I remember when I became a fan.  I didn’t know about cinemassacre I just like how the nerd made fun of the games I played when I was a wii lad.  Then I found the sight and checked out the reviews on all the classic movies and cartoons and it was good.  Down with over convoluted cg movies.

        February 23, 2012 at 9:44 pm

@Fugtub That was a little bit uncalled for. You can find far more ignorant comments on YouTube. Leave him alone; it was probably just an honest typo.

James is so modest. Not only did he create a successful character, but he spawned the entire genre of online nerd reviewing. Just look at Nostalgia Critic, Linkara, Nostalgia Chick, MarzGurl, Irate Gamer (sorry for including him I know he sucks), Pat the NES Punk and many more attempt it each day. Where would we be without James, our pioneer?

    • ChrisStinson

@ChrisStinson At first I thought that the nostalgia critic was waaaay over the top, always screaming and shit, but I gave him a chance, he is good in a weird way. I have tried to watch other reviewers…. but I guess some people have charm and others don’t

      • MarcusBrody

        February 24, 2012 at 7:20 pm

@Villarreal   Agreed. The NC is annoying, but almost always watchable. I really don’t like Linkara, I am not into comics and I disagree with him too often, though his videos are well made.

James is review King and this Video reminds me, that AVGN isn’t really his most favourite creation.
I have to say, that though Cinemassacre brought me to my daily habits of watching internet reviewers, I really don’t like their old self-made home videos. Building these sets and inventing things like on-screen text, before we all had computers, reminded me (perhaps too much) of my own youth.
Yeah, I might be a little jelous there…

  • AmbossDerRabiator

    February 24, 2012 at 3:33 am

Hey James its nice of you to post some stuff people never saw BUT people who bought your DVDs (for much money) now have no reason to buy those because that exclusive stuff gets posted.

    I dont think thats OK.

    • Jarnor

      February 24, 2012 at 5:27 am

@AmbossDerRabiator Do you also bitch about them showing movies for free on network TV years after thier release?

      • February 24, 2012 at 8:41 am

@Jarnor  @AmbossDerRabiator What kind of argument is that? No I agree with him. I like cinemassacre a lot and I check it everyday, but I don’t like them putting up all the exclusive content from the DVDs. That was an added bonus for buying something that you could watch free, so it’s a little silly to also make that content free. Either way, I like Rolfe and Mike and Cinemassacre, and I will continue to like them, and I understand it is hard for them to put out new material at the moment, but it is a little irritating.

  • NathanielLenox

    February 24, 2012 at 3:47 am

Ahhh James, life is crazy. You may have a lot of control with your first job, but the second will be off the wall and come from somewhere unpredictable. You, however, have a bright future in film making. While in California, be sure to get as many contacts as you can, and soon enough you will start raking in the big bucks on the big screen. Just be sure to remember what really launched your popularity, and make these videos when you can.

    • kushdc

      February 24, 2012 at 4:16 am

@NathanielLenox lol i just have to ask do you think he quit the AVGN just by reading the title? It really does sound like u did.

      • NathanielLenox

        February 24, 2012 at 6:47 am

@kushdc No, of course not. I have seen the updates mentioning that he had plans for AVGN for many years to come after the movie, or at least had plenty of games to talk about, and I also know that the video that was uploaded above was made in 2006, and released as part of a DVD collection of his works at that point. It was merely advice that, in all reality, he probably already knew. I am a TCOM minor, and a very important part of the film making industry is networking, and now that he is in California, it’s a great opportunity for him to expand his contact list. I was just trying to say that once he gets some steady work in the industry, whether an editor working on other people’s movies, a cameraman, or a directer bringing his own creations to life, he continues the AVGN series when he can. It beats the alternative of saying “Fuck your dreams, do AVGN forever!”

    February 24, 2012 at 5:17 am

BOOO!!! Why the hell did he have to release such an unnecessary, up-it’s-own-ass,  retrospective behind the scenes look at AVGN already? This is a video that I would expect to come from a fan of AVGN. I feel like James’s compulsive need to make films, as he mentioned in this video, has resulted in the assassination of the honest, sincere and overall relatable feeling that those AVGN review videos naturally induced through the nerd character. By deconstructing every detail of character and totally trivializing and demystifying every notable aspect of the process and method, he has left no room for imagination. Now I can’t go back and watch those videos and genuinely enjoy them the same way I did before. The effortless, in the moment believability that was successfully achieved initially, has been replaced by this stupid commentating voice, insistently repeating “it’s only a character”. I know it is, asshole but, who wants to go see a movie where the director constantly interrupts the film  to make sure the audience keeps ever present in mind how contrived the effort was?
For fuck sake, the whole thing came off as some premature, lifetime achievement award acceptance speech.
You ruined my experience with this bullshit. Thanks a lot, James

@SmoothJazzFingerBlast If seeing something like this has ruined ANYTHING for you then you are truly, sadly and irredeemably retarded.  Seriously you aren’t watching this in the middle of other videos, and…. here is a little secret…. it is ALWAYS just a character.  Sorry to ruin fiction for you.  Have a dumb life.

      February 24, 2012 at 6:04 am

@SmoothJazzFingerBlast Why are you even here with that attitude? You sound more like a AVGN fan than a Cinemassacre fan. You should be watching and re-watching  AVGN episodes on Game Trailers instead of whining about how Santa Claus doesn’t exist. James made this documentary in 2006 (which some have said were during his most creative days, not me) exclusively for the DVD, so apparently you’re not a big enough fan to support James’ work and you prefer everything to be free and tailor made exclusively for you. Well the truth hurts doesn’t it? If your feelings are hurt because your fantasy about what James Rolfe should be in your mind is now ruined… good, you deserve to have your little imagination ruined! You’re like a little child going up to Michael Keaton and continually referring to him as Batman. Grow up!!!

      • SmoothJazzFingerBlast

        February 24, 2012 at 7:47 am

@NicholasPatrick  Look, young Nicholas, James fucked up. Period. When movies do this sort of behind the scenes thing, it is ok because that project is over. You’re done immersing yourself in the performance (which includes viewing it as a temporary “proposed reality”) and you can move on from the story to the mechanics of the thing. To do this in the middle of an on going series, which is made to appear as a realistic review video series, is dumb and short sighted. The fact is, this is not a movie, it’s the opposite really. What it has going for it is it’s low budget quality, coupled with James’s bad acting, hilariously cheap effects and clumsy monologue which feels very “amateur documentary”, in a good way. In the moment, you want to suspend disbelief, you want to believe he hates these games, you want to believe you are watching a socially inept, potty mouth asshole venting impotent rage about a nerdy subject in his parents basement and to quote your God (me): “(It’s only a character) I know it is, asshole but, who wants to go see a movie where the director constantly interrupts the film  to make sure the audience keeps ever present in mind how contrived the effort was?” and who wants the actor to break character in the middle of everything and explain the boring details of the production? I understand that you lay face down in bed every night, ass up, praying that Rolfe’s cock satisfies your cock craving asshole and for me to question anything he does is tantamount to the multitude of times you felt helplessly humiliated when people confronted you about being such a dick hugging waste of life but, you know, I did it, so continue hating people for being smarter and better than you, you’re the champ. The rest of you fatherless rim jobs you cried about my comment should start a therapy group to cope with your irrelevance. Nicholas is your president. Heed your lord!!!

@SmoothJazzFingerBlast  You might have been right if we were talking about theater or something that wasn’t episodic, but since each episode is self contained only a fool would think that something like this breaks the character, the simple fact that the episodes come out every few weeks could do the same thing.  I love how you attempt hide from the fact that you are wrong and that everyone disagrees with you with a thin veil of pseudo-intellectualism and words you think we won’t understand.  Your length of post simply furthers your failure.  Keep on being stupid while trying to be smart, the rest of us “rim-jobs” will continue to enjoy the video series since we actually have the capacity to enjoy them AND enjoy a little behind the scenes, sorry your couldn’t do both.

Look, that’s what he meant: tailored just for you. It makes no sense. You know why James doesn’t do it the way you say? Because he is an artist. And artists are different than “normal people,” they move the world, they become famous, they are the ones that we later look up to after they die. They are the oens that change us and the world. It doesn’t have to be done the way others do it. End of story. I am getting sick of these over the top debates – sometimes -_-

The fact of the matter is that most people are not bothered at all by Making Of-videos like you are, so if you dont even need to watch the video to be bothered by Making Of-videos and just reading the video description is enough then I strongly suggest that you start surfing the web with your eyes closed.

I get what you’re saying. I really do. I don’t enjoy horror movies as much as a lot of other people because I don’t jump or get scared. I know how the special effects are done and all and it just takes me out of the movie. I envy others who can just sit and watch them. But for me the “magic” is ruined.

My point is that you don’t have to listen to the commentary on a dvd, you know? It’s there for who wants to know more about it, those who don’t care or want to can simply not watch the commentary. It’s that simple. If it’s been ruined for you, it’s because you sought it out. No one forced you to watch and you have no one to blame but yourself.

Now go back to your first and second post and take a good look… WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?! Your response made absolutely, nooo sense. You sound like a pissed off 40 yr old virgin that discovered, “Wait a minute… Santa doesn’t exist? What about the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy!?! Nooo”! And so you just ramble a bunch of gibberish out of your ass, not putting any thought process into your response. Not a bit, except you wanting to prove the world how much of a troll you could possibly be. Well sir, I congratulate you. No seriously, I applaud you. You might actually be the biggest troll on the face of the Earth. There should be a world record dedicated for trolls, as a matter of fact… You may even won it! While not trust worthy of any site, I can say AVGN cinemassacre has been the most entertaining. Being overly cautious I hope James respects this as I don’t want to lose my family resources to some scam artists. Still he needs recognition to his success which I feel I must acknowledge, he literally is the artist of the 21st generation of internet age of humanity.

Ah, James. Using the word “movie” ever so broadly. He seem to slap that term on anything so long as it was filmed.

Semantics, though, I agree. But I’d prefer if there was something to distinguish his serious documentaries and stuff like The Deader The Better from videos of him just goofing around with friends.

To clarify, when I say “videos of him just goofing around with friends” I don’t mean any of the ones he showed here in some sort of disrespectful way. I meant just what I said – those videos of him as a kid when they were essentially just playing and recorded it. From what I’ve gathered he counts those.

no offense to the nerd. how can you call what you do as filmmaking? im not saying James you dont have talent for direction. But honestly if the AVGN videos make you a director of film then doesnt that make everyone on youtube a director?

Is the dude who said “leave britney alone” a film maker? No im sorry hes not. Abd as much as I love the AVGN videos. They are not films. Especially in todays day and age.

I am a film student and I respect everything James has done. But production values (as little as they may be) do not make a film.  Recording yourself playing a shitty game does not make you a filmaker. A film is a film, its not a youtube rant about a crappy video game.

If what you do makes you a filmmaker then I am sad to be a student of the art.

       @sliphazard
Right up there just below the Cinemassacre’s logo there’s a “Films” dropdown menu. Even by your definition a what a “film” is, the vast content provided there should serve as proof that James has made many “real” films throughout his life and that, although AVGN is by far his most famous creation, he hasn’t limited his output to “youtube rants about crappy video games”.Also, James has gone out of his way a number of times to share extensively his thoughts and lifelong experiences about filmmaking, not only in his movie reviews but also in retrospectives such as Cinemassacre’s 200. He knows that production values do not make a film, but craft and passion does. That’s been made quite obvious to all of us fans of his work, aspiring “students of the art” or not.

@sliphazard go back to study, you have a LOT to learn before to come even close to what James is today. Or even better, change profession, if you can’t see all the excellent work done here you probably don’t have what is needed to become a filmmaker.

  • sliphazard

    March 1, 2012 at 5:20 am

PS if youre going to make an actual film. Please make the camera angles and visuals unique. You have alot behind you making it a cult movie. But if you just shoot it “shot and reverse shot” then it will be a fucken waste of space. Sam Raimi had his own style. Dont shoot a movie just because you can. do something unique that makes people want to buy it.

When you stumble into an idea that turns out to be a success, the best part is knowing that you’ve just scratched the surface of where you can go with it. When you have a backlog of ideas and a popular outlet for them you’ve pretty much hit the gold mine. Keep it up and have fun with it. I’m entertained!

Great videos, I have watched most of them numerous times. They are all extremely entertaining and relaxing to watch. I was just getting pissed and yelling at a game 10 minutes ago actually. I thought that was kind of funny. My girlfriend was laughing tat me. She thought it was funny as hell, and like you said, the game didn’t give a shit I was pissed.

“Little did I know that 18 years later I’d be playing the same nintendo on the same TV” do kids really get a sense that they won’t still be playing the same games and using the same technology when they’re older? While many of the family TVs, VCRs, and computers have been sold or broken we still have every video game system we’ve owned are still in my household (even if I don’t know where some are). “why would somebody be complaining about an old game and why would he still be playing it?” is that line asking why somebody would still be playing an old game or why they’d still be playing a game they still complain about?

Great Documentary James! You know, watching this acctualy sorta made me think of something. If you gave this a massive production money, and do the same kind of documentary, only about the whole cinemassacre spectre everything from your short films, YKWBS, AVGN, Boardjames. The whole shebang<–(Sorry if this is writen wrong, but what can you expect from a Norwegian chef:P), And give it this sort of “Lemmy” style documentary production. Now THAT’S a documentary I Would sit down with my popcorn att a cinema and watch! You guys at cinemassacre are great! I Still remember the first time I saw one of your videos, it was back in 2007 when ANN was on youtube, and you had gotten to about your ‘Top Gun’ review. I was looking for the ‘Top Gun guitar solo song’ and I found your review. I laughed so hard I woke up my older brother who got seriously pissed and came out to check out what was going on. so I showed him the video and we both just cracked up and laughed for probably 15 minuttes. I’ve been a huge fan ever since and will continue to be. When you guys start making movies for the ‘big screen’ I will be first in line here in Norway! And when Kyle comes to play a gig in Norway, I will be the first to buy a ticket to see his show. REALLY good producers once come every second ‘Marine blue’ moon. And all of you are one of them! I wish you all the best of luck on your upcoming videos here on cinemassacre and I think I speak for us all when I say we are all waiting in anticipation for the next AVGN video, and are dying to hear more of the wondrous creative cuss words again now that it’s been so long.

    Best regards
    your humble fan, and admirer

My #1 question by far has always been “How much does James do AVGN out of his own passion for the character and the show and his own desire to make episodes vs. his audience’s love of and demand for it? Basically, did he start and then continue doing it because he liked it or because other people liked it?”
