The real life person might have died, but we’ve known the person on tv and such only. I send my condolences to his family and friends, but to me, he’s never really gonna die.

My childhood hero, Mr. Spock, will forever be with us, until our final breath.

    January 27, 2012 at 1:57 am

This was seriously awesome! I just finished watching all the Treks – Started with TNG, then went through DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and ended with TOS and I didn’t know at least HALF of these questions. If I thought you two were cool and made rad videos before, you just elevated to “Hero” status. Can’t wait to see more!!

    January 27, 2012 at 2:02 am

Spock was the fricking Science Officer!!!

  • TwistedSpeech

    January 27, 2012 at 2:12 am

It’s so funny that I am watching this and hearing the battle music, while at the same on WGN they’re showing the Futurama episode right now where Dr. Zoidberg goes back to his home planet to mate, lol! Great video, guys. : )

    January 27, 2012 at 2:12 am

Yes, I know, James and Motherfucker Mike are on opposite sides of the country right now. I’ve been a Cinemassacre fan since 2007 and I’m seeing the movie when it goes on tour. I was being facetious, you oversensitive dildo dick fucks! 🙂

  • Paul Stanis

    January 27, 2012 at 5:48 am

I got the Altair 6 question. Immediately, too; that was almost frightening.

But you know, the thing is that a lot of these trivia answers are actually fun to know: kroyka, an-woon, tranya… But not L-374 III!

  • ZachThompson

    January 27, 2012 at 6:03 am

Am I the only one who has never heard of a Star Trek fan being referred to as a “trekker”? That is seriously the first time I’ve heard that.

    • dumbassbitch13

      January 27, 2012 at 6:12 am

@ZachThompson I’ve heard of the term before, but I don’t know anyone that really uses it.

    • msocarras067

      January 27, 2012 at 7:49 am

@ZachThompson As far as I know, “trekkie” came first because Gene Roddenberry claims he came up with it, but apparently that became associated with being a geeky loser so some butthurt fans came up with the word “trekker” because it sounds more “serious.”

    • wombatkidd

      January 27, 2012 at 11:13 am

@ZachThompson “Trekkers” are supposedly normal people who like Star Trek, whereas “trekkies” are the weird overblown obsessed people. This distinction dates at least back to the 70’s. Although it’s not something that’s universally acknowledged.

Really though, the best explainaition I ever heard of the difference is:

A “trekker” is a Star Trek fan. A trekkie is someone who insists on being called a trekker.

    • fanboyfilms

      January 27, 2012 at 12:14 pm

@ZachThompson I know in the ’80s with TNG they said “Trekker” was the PC version as “Trekkie” was an insult. They also claimed Trekker was for TNG fans and Trekkie for original series fans.

  • Piet

    January 27, 2012 at 6:12 am

I never was a Trekkie (is it spelled that way? XD) and this video wasn´t helping in becoming one.

great vid though, Mofo Mike and Captain James T. Nerd XD

  • Mark Taylor

    January 27, 2012 at 7:21 am

    Ok, nerd alert time,

Spock is the Science Officer of the Star Ship Enterprise, he is generally accepted as the second in command, but he shares the position with both the Chief Medical officer (“Bones” McCoy) and the Chief Engineer, (“Scotty”).

This is further complicated by the fact that prior too the standing rank organization of the Enterprise, in the pilot, there was an actual second in command in the rank structure, and Spock still held the science officer position.

Now compare this to a TNG, where we have a definitive rank structure, with Riker serving as a Second in Command, and serving no other role. Data serves as Science Officer, Geordi LaForge (for most of the series) serves as Chief Engineer, and Beverly Crusher serves as the Chief Medical officer.

With all this in place in TNG, Riker serves in the other positions extremely rarely, helping in engineering only in extreme emergencies.

All in all I think the rank structure on the original enterprise is unofficial, enforced at the whim of Kirk as much of the enterprise’s operational day to day stuff is not to standard it seems. He was not really, by the book.

    • fanboyfilms

      January 27, 2012 at 12:12 pm

@Mark Taylor Spock didn’t share the second in command position. He was the First Officer/Executive Officer, when Kirk wasn’t on duty, Spock was in charge. The only time anyone else was in charge was when both Kirk and Spock were off duty or off the ship. There is a line of command succession down the ranks. After Spock was Scotty then Sulu. McCoy was never in charge, he was just always on the bridge giving everyone advice but he never held command.

  • msocarras067

    January 27, 2012 at 7:50 am

This makes me want to watch more Star Trek, although TNG will always be better than the original series (with the movies it’s the opposite, though)

  • wermin

    January 27, 2012 at 7:56 am

    Anti-proton and it’s absolutely pure !

    • inkrypted

@wermin Wonder how much a kilo of pure uncut anti protons go for on the street?

  • hypefire

    January 27, 2012 at 7:58 am

The first Trek movie was not really made to compete with Star Wars, they had been trying to start a new TV series. But as one thing changed, many things changed and they ended up with a movie instead of a new show.

  • January 27, 2012 at 8:24 am

  • Czab

    January 27, 2012 at 8:52 am

“Vulcans have pointed ears to capture soundwaves in the thin atmosphere of the planet Vulcan”

Wut!? I have never heard that. Show me the episode in which they establish that.

    • wombatkidd

      January 27, 2012 at 11:04 am

@Czab It’s one of those things that was in early supplemental material that actual canon has gone on to ignore.

  • DarinLanes

    January 27, 2012 at 9:15 am

I can barely remember some of these episodes. I grew up on the next generation series. I remember they used to air an episode every night and for awhile two episodes a night 9/10p. I can’t wait to hear some TNG trivia

  • Ryan Bates

    January 27, 2012 at 9:50 am

Mike, as a fellow Trekkie, I find myself drawn to this video like no other. I damn-near answered all of those questions… I know TOS the least of all. Any chance we might see some questions relating to any of the spinoffs, whether it be The Animated Series or the greatest Trek ever Deep Space Nine? Anyway, make more Star Trek stuff! Awesome job as usual.

  • Michael MacNucator

    January 27, 2012 at 9:50 am

    • Czab

      January 27, 2012 at 12:31 pm

@MrArkadin Do you mean Yeoman? :). That’s what they call most of the female crewmembers in TOS. I guess it’s a rank.

      • JamesHammett

        January 27, 2012 at 12:57 pm

@[email protected] Yeoman isnt a rank, per se, more like a job title, like Science officer, engineer, or mechanic. its the Term the current navy uses for their “paperwork” people and secretaries

  • fightgenie

    January 27, 2012 at 10:24 am

I love this Trek Trivia. When Mike said, “Aye, aye, aye” for III, James should have said, “One aye is sufficient acknowledgement, Ensign”.

    @Anothony you’re a douche. That is all.

  • B1ueyedfiend

    January 27, 2012 at 11:35 am

Nice video guys, I’m glad you stuck to a bit more casual trivia or I would of been pretty lost.

I love watching the re-mastered version of the series. They play it on Space during the week. Doomsday Day Machine is one of the most noticeable improvements.

    • Devil_Rising

      January 28, 2012 at 5:19 am

@B1ueyedfiend Having watched many episodes now on Netflix, I have to say, I’m really not a fan of the “improvements”, like the CG and such. It just kind of looks out of place with everything else, and having grown up with the original series, I honestly kind of like the old effects. Just like old Doctor Who. They have their own charm, and unless someone is a “graphics whore”, so to speak, they work perfectly fine.

  • Johnthegamer

    January 27, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Coincidentally, this video comes out just days after the nerd log video from their “secret location”;)

For me there is only the original series, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek The Motion Picture, Star Trek II The Wrath Of Kahn, Star Trek First Contact, and Star Trek Insurrection, well the comment that Data makes to worf ” and have you noticed how your boobs have started to firm u…..” put that film at the bottom of the list but it’s still there. I mean come on he is an android not an idiot.

    January 27, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Finnegan is older than Kirk in reality. He was his upperclassman. Finnegan is not really there on that planet obviously, although that manifestation of him was younger than Kirk…

  • Big McLargehuge

    January 27, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Spock’s actual rank in the bulk of TOS is Commander (except for the first Pilot). Being second in command (McCoy and Scotty are both Lieutenant Commanders during TOS) he is the First Officer to the Captain.

  • RowanJColeman

    January 27, 2012 at 5:08 pm

I always have a little bit of a gripe when talking about Star Wars being the reason Star Trek: The Motion Picture was made. It was part of the reason, but not all of it. It was to do with a change in the rating system. In fact they were already planning another series called Star Trek: Phase II however….

    Wow! That was geeky…

    • Big McLargehuge

      January 27, 2012 at 5:23 pm

@RowanJColeman True. The “Phase II” series was cancelled in favor of a motion picture due to the success of the first Star Wars movie. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a remake of a script originally proposed as the Pilot episode for Phase II.

      …also very geeky.

      • RowanJColeman

        January 28, 2012 at 8:34 am

@Big McLargehuge Did you know there’s an independent company who have made their own version of Star Trek: Phase II. It’s on youtube check it out.

    • Devil_Rising

      January 28, 2012 at 5:16 am

@RowanJColeman True. People also seem to forget the Animated Series from the 70s, which, seeing as how it had all of the original main cast doing voices (Except for no Chekov), and seeing as how, for a cartoon, it still retained the same basic quality and feel of the show, I always just looked at it as essentially the 4th season of TOS. Great stuff. I remember seeing re-runs of it as a very little kid.

  • FrankCabanski

    January 27, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Spock was First Officer and Science Officer. But that question about his station on the bridge was silly, as was the question about why his ears are pointed. Mike’s answer is the correct answer. It’s because he was an alien.

The original series will always be the best. Why? Well A) Kirk. B) Spock. C) Bones. And D) It had the most sense of fun and imagination within it, while also telling good stories. The rest of the ST shows took themselves, I felt, way too seriously.

@Devil_Rising Oh come now. “Picard has it all over Kirk. He’s poised & measured & doesn’t wear a cheap rug. Rather he accepts even baldness w/ a quiet cool that says I am in command, you are safe with me, I will cradle you in my arms through any crisis in any galaxy.:

      January 28, 2012 at 11:11 am

@Devil_Rising In the 60’s,, yes, I’m that old,, all of my friends loved the Original Star Trek, and never could figure out why it got canceled?!

All my dumb friends called it Star Track though. Just like they called my dads Mustang Mach 1, a Mark 1.

Geez, I feel like Huckleberry Finn here….

Anyway, the Original was way better than any of the spin-offs.

It seems like in the newer ones, everything is so dang p.c. , and nobody wants to offend anyone? Klingons are friends?!! Whaaa???

Every picture of me from the 60’s, I’m sporting a black eye. It was the decade of,, “It’s o.k. for everybody to beat the hell out of anybody you happen to feel like beating the hell out of, at any given moment.” It was o.k., and Star Trek was one of the few shows that reflected that mind-set. That decade was tough, but it made me tougher.

Kirk, and Spock, went to Planets, and kicked everybodys’ asses. With fist fights. That’s how things were done then.

I miss those times. (I never could figure out why they always sent the most important guys from the ship on dangerous missions? I think the “T” in Kirk stands for Testosterone.)

Picard would try to “work things out peaceably”. We all know were that gets ya. It’s not a bad show? I do like the concept of the Borg. Still, it’s lame.

… and speaking of P.C.,,, Why did the Klingons in the original show, all look like Mexicans?

@MECHAGARY @Devil_Rising I remember watching it with my parents (I’m 24) and I suppose they got me into Trek. I think my favorite scene of all time was from “The Voyage Home” when Scotty tries to talk into the computer mouse. Then he just starts typing crazy fast. And now that transparent aluminum is nearly a reality.

As for the Klingons, the newest and worst series, “Enterprise” claims the suffered from some kind of augment virus. I hated it and the 2009 remake of the movie. As far as I’m concerned, Abrams ruined it.

This is my first time posting here. I’ve been watching this site for several years now and I gotta say it’s about time I showed some appreciation for what James and Mike do here.

Thank you both for your entertaining videos on the things you enjoy. I happen share a lot of your interests and feel like you guys are my kind of people. Keep up the awesome fun guys.

On Star Trek, I grew up watching it with my dad and I never knew why I loved it so much. Part due to fond memories of dad and I spending time together and part do to the writing. Those writers believed in the power of the stories they told as a lot of them mirrored real life issues. Since before the middle ages people have expressed their feelings about government, life, love, revenge, etc and it’s always those stories that stand the test of time. This is a big factor in why Star Trek is as strong today as ever. I look forward to the next trivia post James and Mike.

btw, I met Bill Shatner in person. I believe he’s the best prankster in modern history because his arrogance is actually a joke he’s played on the world. The man offered to shake my hand and told he was pleased to meet me and was glad I came to meet him. Shatner is a cool guy and if you read his books you will catch on that he apologized for missing out on years of Trek fans.

William Shatner can be a pretty funny guy sometimes, and he has some really funny stories related to his time on Star Trek.

Now as for his attitude, I know for a while he was a huge jerk to people and I’ve heard countless interviews about how he was a huge prima donna prick. Since you’ve actually met him, and I haven’t, I’ll take your word for it that he’s become more modest and humble over the years.

As for his books, I haven’t read any of them…but his “Shatner-verse” Star Trek novels seem like they might be kind of interesting (if self-serving).

One of the guys at MITS was trying to figure out what their new computer should be called, so when he got home he saw his daughter was watching Star Trek. He asked her what planet they were visiting, and she replied “Altair VI.”

That computer, the Altair 8800, became the first computer available to hobbyists.

Spock was the First Officer but officially titled Science Officer, a position showing that the hierarchy wasn’t just military based, akin to Dax’s role on DS9 (though she was not 2nd in command there). But, I haven’t watched ToS, except for the movies, since TNG started.
