I just finished watching all the Treks – Started with TNG, then went through DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and ended with TOS and I didn’t know at least HALF of these questions. @ZachThompson As far as I know, “trekkie” came first because Gene Roddenberry claims he came up with it, but apparently that became associated with being a geeky loser so some butthurt fans came up with the word “trekker” because it sounds more “serious.”

@ZachThompson “Trekkers” are supposedly normal people who like Star Trek, whereas “trekkies” are the weird overblown obsessed people. This distinction dates at least back to the 70′s. Although it’s not something that’s universally acknowledged.
Really though, the best explainaition I ever heard of the difference is:
A “trekker” is a Star Trek fan. A trekkie is someone who insists on being called a trekker.

@ZachThompson I know in the ’80s with TNG they said “Trekker” was the PC version as “Trekkie” was an insult. They also claimed Trekker was for TNG fans and Trekkie for original series fans.

Ok, nerd alert time,
Spock is the Science Officer of the Star Ship Enterprise, he is generally accepted as the second in command, but he shares the position with both the Chief Medical officer (“Bones” McCoy) and the Chief Engineer, (“Scotty”).
This is further complicated by the fact that prior too the standing rank organization of the Enterprise, in the pilot, there was an actual second in command in the rank structure, and Spock still held the science officer position.
Now compare this to a TNG, where we have a definitive rank structure, with Riker serving as a Second in Command, and serving no other role. Data serves as Science Officer, Geordi LaForge (for most of the series) serves as Chief Engineer, and Beverly Crusher serves as the Chief Medical officer.
With all this in place in TNG, Riker serves in the other positions extremely rarely, helping in engineering only in extreme emergencies.
All in all I think the rank structure on the original enterprise is unofficial, enforced at the whim of Kirk as much of the enterprise’s operational day to day stuff is not to standard it seems. He was not really, by the book.

@Mark Taylor Spock didn’t share the second in command position. He was the First Officer/Executive Officer, when Kirk wasn’t on duty, Spock was in charge. The only time anyone else was in charge was when both Kirk and Spock were off duty or off the ship. There is a line of command succession down the ranks. After Spock was Scotty then Sulu. McCoy was never in charge, he was just always on the bridge giving everyone advice but he never held command.

The first Trek movie was not really made to compete with Star Wars, they had been trying to start a new TV series. But as one thing changed, many things changed and they ended up with a movie instead of a new show.

@B1ueyedfiend Having watched many episodes now on Netflix, I have to say, I’m really not a fan of the “improvements”, like the CG and such. It just kind of looks out of place with everything else, and having grown up with the original series, I honestly kind of like the old effects. Just like old Doctor Who. They have their own charm, and unless someone is a “graphics whore”, so to speak, they work perfectly fine.

Spock’s actual rank in the bulk of TOS is Commander (except for the first Pilot). Being second in command (McCoy and Scotty are both Lieutenant Commanders during TOS) he is the First Officer to the Captain.

I always have a little bit of a gripe when talking about Star Wars being the reason Star Trek: The Motion Picture was made. It was part of the reason, but not all of it. It was to do with a change in the rating system. In fact they were already planning another series called Star Trek: Phase II however….

@RowanJColeman True. The “Phase II” series was cancelled in favor of a motion picture due to the success of the first Star Wars movie. Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a remake of a script originally proposed as the Pilot episode for Phase II.

People also seem to forget the Animated Series from the 70s, which, seeing as how it had all of the original main cast doing voices (Except for no Chekov), and seeing as how, for a cartoon, it still retained the same basic quality and feel of the show, I always just looked at it as essentially the 4th season of TOS. Great stuff. I remember seeing re-runs of it as a very little kid.
