Nerd Log – Location Scouting

James / January 26th, 2012

We’ve looked at a lot of film locations in Los Angeles and have seen some really cool stuff. We even happened to stumble upon a set that was being dressed for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film. Awesome!

The AVGN Movie has a lot of locations that we need to find. The script may be a little too ambitious, but that’s the fun of it. Unfortunately, most of the locations we looked at are very expensive to use! I’m getting schooled in Hollywood pretty quickly.

Anyone have a location that we could use in the Los Angeles area? I know it’s a long shot, but I guess it can’t hurt to ask. Here’s some of the spots we need. (Some are easier than others)

Boiler room
Warehouse (mostly for us to be able to build our own sets in)
Green screen studio
Carnival/Amusement park
A desert field (Does your backyard look like the Atari landfill?)
Surveillance room
A yard with a satellite dish (We’re talking BIG)
Operating room
Kitchen/Living room with a cabin look or retro wood panel walls.
Conference room
Fighter Jet cockpit (Yeah, good luck, right?)
School bus

For the fighter jet cockpit, there are people who make their own home built realistic simulators. I’d search around the net, maybe you’d find someone that would let you use it for filming.

If your looking for desert anything past the 15 freeway will be just fine (Inland Empire area) of Southern California, about 40 miles east of LA…also in the Ontario area (also with in the Inland Empire) I know of many warehouse) that prob go for really cheap givin theres a million of them with in the area….just a heads up that’s theres good spots in the “greater Los Angeles area” with out the price tag of Hollywood but just 20 miles East.

  • DonSkiver

    January 26, 2012 at 1:54 am

You’d be surprised what kind of places are available to rent on an hourly or daily basis. Los Angeles is the porn capital of the United States; they film more porn movies there than anywhere else, and a lot of those porn movies need sets and locations too! (Though some just need as little as a matress and 4 walls…) I bet if you check around you can find some really neat places really cheap. As far as looking for some of the other stuff, like a desert, an amusement park, there are some really neat places out there that will probably let you film there, unless you’re looking for an ABANDONED amusement park. In fact, you can travel to redlands, ca (its about an hour I think outside of LA) and that area out there is pretty desert-ish and I think the amusement park out there is actually closed down (Pharaoh’s Lost Kingdom, I haven’t been there in over 10 years, I think I remember my dad telling me that they closed it down somewhat recently) So if thats what you want thats 2 birds with 1 stone!

Or if you want a running park, try going to Golf n’ Stuff out in Norwalk, CA. Its got an arcade, bumper cars, bumper boats, waterslide, and did I mention they filmed the Karate Kid at this place (it’s where daniel and allie had their date) and from what I’ve gathered, they’ve kept the place up in pretty good shape, so it’s not like a piece of shit! I haven’t been to Golf n’ Stuff in probably 14 years, but it was a blast last time I was there.

I wish you good luck in this endeavor. My father still lives in LA area (pasadena, specifically) and he’s the fucking KING of locations. He can watch a movie filmed in southern california and tell you where each scene took place and can get out an atlas and tell you what streets they’re on. He’s a master. I can ask him for ideas too and then forward them back to you.

I love location scouting! My dad had a friend named Stan Pearse that was the location manager of demolition man (credited as f.Stanley Pearse Jr.) (which at that time was my favorite movie ever with my favorite actor ever) and he told me about locations scouting and that it was hard but fun.

Anyway, I’m getting all scatterbrained and my ambien is making me doze off in the middle of typing this, so I’ll talk to my dad , see what I can do.

[email protected] Dude, you have to pay just to use a camera in public if you’re a film crew. They call it public liability insurance and it’s bullshit. I think if I’m filming a scene by the side of the road in perfectly pedestrian territory, if you see that there’s something going on and the very SIGHT of a movie being made makes you swerve out of control, that’s YOUR goddamn fault.Think about it, who needs to have more responsibility for their equipment? The guy operating a camera, or the guy operating a heavy machinery capable of traveling at tops speeds of between 80 and like 100 and something miles per hour that is literally PROPELLED BY EXPLOSIONS?

  • Fata Morgana

Hey James I know there’s definitely gotta be a place to get in a jet cockpit. If they don’t let you film at some aeronautical museum, you can always try an airplane boneyard. They list some places on the wikipedia page and some are in california

Mythbusters seem to be there a lot too.

  • RhyanChapman

  • salculd

    January 26, 2012 at 3:55 am

When you said you were going to be doing vlogs during production, I was expecting.. like.. every other week or so. Certainly not even near the volume that has been produced so far, especially since (to my understanding) you haven’t started shooting proper yet. I have a feeling I’m going to end up learning a lot about the moviemaking process just from watching these, even if you don’t explicitly intend for that to happen in the first place.

This is getting way ahead of things, but when this is released on DVD, provided that there’s enough room for it, you should seriously consider including these as a bonus feature.

Plus, there’s an airplane scrap yard in Nevada, a couple of hours from California that would be sure to have a cockpit from a plane/fighter jet. Don’t know exactly where it’s located but it shouldn’t be too hard to find.

  • shawnji

    January 26, 2012 at 6:18 am

I know it’s a long-shot and the chance it will be of help is slim; but if you get desperate and can’t find a place to do green-screen work in L.A., or if you just need to do some last-minute re-shoots, I’d suggest going by IMC Studios in Russellville, Arkansas (from the route on your travel v-log it didn’t look too far out of the way). They have a really nice studio set-up for you to work with. Here’s a link:

They’re good friends of mine. John Montgomery, the owner, was one of my groomsmen at my wedding. He’s a really nice guy and quite passionate about film-making himself. I’m pretty sure it would be cheaper than most places you’ll find on the west coast at the very least…

As for the survelence room you could look into maybe a high school or a mall…mine have like 30 monitors set up and i think they even have a few watching the bathroom doors. and malls usually have rooms of that sortNevada is just a few miles away from LA so a dessert shouldn’t be that hard.

You could try the San Diego County Fair for an amusement park and see if you can get in to film it after it closes Im sure theres an abandoned Warehouse somewhere in LA but if not…

Try an Air Show if you can and ask about renting an unused hangar.

In Santee, California we have a small air field called Gillespie field and you may also be able to find an empty hangar there

    Good Luck nerd

Raleigh Studios, by santa monica and highland. Its owned by George Rosenthal, i know the guy so if your going for an actual movie set i could try and see whats the least they would rent one out. If it was even possible, and if not… there are a bunch of warehouses in sun valley and mainly by north hollywood. They run beside the train tracks… major cross street would be tujunga and vanowen. I used to live by there, it seems like there could be a bunch of warehouses you could rent or idk. Cheers.

The Estrella WarBirds Museum in Paso Robles, CA (about 4 hours north of LA) has a ton of airplanes and it’s open to the public. You can sit in a few of them as well. The ones that are open for the public to sit in are a little worn of course, but they might be good enough for the shot you have planned, with a little movie magic.

When AVGN did the Spielberg collection of games at the end it said to be continued, does that mean the films going to be part 2? That would be awesome AGVN and his journey to ET Atari landfill so he can dump ET in with all the rest of them hahaha

I know James loves his horror so it’s bound to have some horror elements in the operating room like in Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 2 (and I know how James loved that film and probably that scene too)

Finally I know James no 1 film it’s a mad mad mad mad world, so it will probably have elements of that too.

I know what a genius James is so his film will more than likely be waay better than anything I’ve put in this message – best of luck to James and everyone else involved in this AVGN film: D

    • DaveMcGrath

      January 26, 2012 at 5:41 pm

@tomtiss THANK YOU! I never considered the fact that Horror would possibly play a role in the film. God I am a derp! I DID however consider the mad-etc world film being refrenced. A shame the trees are gone or it would have been a funny pop-culture shot!

Then again… Pop-culture is “mainstream” media and such. Maybe we need a new term???

Just a thought. And thanks for the interesting thoughts tomtiss

I am being such a dork but here goes… Nerd Log sounds like James has become so self absorbed that he even has a name for his turds?! (completely kidding of course)

Stupidity aside… These vlogs are getting more and more on topic and more exciting as they come out. I like when we get to meet people involved with the film especially when they are personal friends of yours. It is like getting to know the whole crew!

Lastly James seemed pretty confident in this video. Like he feels good about the project perhaps? Either way I know the James Rolfe “Badass Stare” when I see it! (let me find out its just the sun in his eyes!)

what in the holy mother of hell would you want with a fighter jet cockpit? this movie will get as intricatly detailed at Team America or the thunderbirds… like that puppet stuff personally? anyway i guess you could use the same rom from the TGWTG brawl as a conference room.

    • inatspong

Nice! I am certainly looking forward to the movie. I hope it will be at least in independent theaters as there is one in my home town.

It’s nice to see someone get big in this industry. I want to make movies myself. I just got a few short films, that have hardly any popularity, but I guess it’s a step.

Oh and its a LONG SHOT, but if I can get in contact with my old teachers from high school, my brother built a sound proof green screen room there. If its still there and the school is willing to help, I can help with the room, and there is mixer equipment and computers, both with adobe premiere and a Mac with Media ONE editing software there. Should serve at least to digitize your material after filming.

Love that behind the scenes video. I LOVE this stuff. Especially since we’re along for the ride, and not watching afterward on DVD, like in most cases, and ESPECIALLY since it is AVGN, which is something we all love so dearly. Who knows, you guys might become legends in the business someday and this video could be used in a retrospective of “their early days” on a biography! :D

I wish you the best of luck finding those locations. My mind is spinning from all those locations and the stuff you said. Can’t wait for the movie!

I’m probably preaching to the converted, but I only say it because I can’t emphasize how much it would suck if you guys got sued.Really digging all the updates, by the way. It’s cool to see things are moving on and the movie slowly becoming a reality. It’s a wonderful thing to experience this after being a fan of the show for all these years.

Oh and, to help James out…painting and illustration (my art) have that quality also. The exception is that one can also use reference to help shape an imaginary scene, parts of which one must have experienced in real life! In film they call it CGI….

    • shawnji

      January 27, 2012 at 9:20 pm

@MichaelSyrigos Ooh! That actually made me wonder if they’ll use any matte paintings for this. Matte painting is such an awesome semi-lost film art. I think it would be awesome if they could find a really talented artist to do this for the film… Do it!

Beware of the unions. They can suck all the money out of your movie.

Do you know, that when Eli Roth shot “Cabin Fever” (an ambitious independent movie, just like yours) he had an umpleasent encounter with the unions?

They saw the camera – and found out about the movie. Then they began to recruit all the cast and crew. Quietly, but effectively, they followed the crew/cast members one by one, they promised’em all sorts of privileges the unions can provide and scare with all sorts of limitations one will face if he (or she) won’t be a part of any union. The temptation was high, and 50% of the cast and crew sighned all the forms.

So, the unions waited till the middle of production (when there will be no way for director to fire the crew) and they suddenly attacked the director and producer (Eli Roth) with their bills. The thing was, that 50% of cast and crew were oficially union people, so the producer must pay for them… or he would be arrested.

By some miracle, Roth was able to shoot ‘Cabin Fever”, but since then – he never shot anything in America. It’s an unnecessary headache, that can cost you a lot.

Unions are like mafia. If uou shoot something on their turf, you must pay the price. They don’t care, if you’re indie or not, they think simply: if he can afford a camera and equipment, then he’s got money, we can collect.

And L.A. – is their MAJOR TURF. So beware and be really carefull. And remember, I donated money to help you shoot the picture – not to feed the unions.

Maybie you’re already know all that stuff, but please,BE CAREFULL. And good luck.

  • Youri Gavrilov

They don’t care, they can attack anyone.

Maybie you’re already know this, but still, be VERY CAREFULL. And good luck.

You can go inland more into the city of Ludlow, CA for the desert field. It’s a long drive, but its definitely worth it. You would have to go off-roading for some really good shots in the desert and you have to pass the Dairy Queen, but I’m pretty damn sure its free to shoot there; me and my friends go out there to shoot with guns. Best part is, nobody’s ever there. :)

Actually, James. This may sound dumb and I’m probably not the only one to recommend this. And if I am, I’m shocked. Freddie Wong lives in Los Angeles and he film’s at quite a few locations. It may be easier said than done, but you should really try to contact him. Maybe he can not only help you find some good location’s, but seeing that he lives in L.A. then maybe he know’s some location’s on the cheap. It’s just a suggestion, but it could work. And I already know that he has a warehouse that he film’s in constantly, which is something that’s on your list. I’ve also seen him film in desert esque locations as well. I would definetely try him out if I were you.

I think this Movie could be the beginning of the end (as we know it) for the AVGN. I Love and Respect the Man but the odds are against him. Billions of people have came out to my native State throwing fortunes into self funded (or in this case fan funded) films only to run home to Mom n Dad with their tail tucked between their legs. I wish you a miracle and hope it works but hind sight is 20/20 retro gaming is extremely niche only us fans will ever see it.

I see it as a Nerd-Out-Of-his-Basement (waynes world) going on some kind of zany adventure (Pee Wees Big adventure) much of the whole movie has been spoiled it sounds nothing new. Guess Im kind of offended with James continually asking for money when i c him with suped up cameras and living off of it as well (and living well too, my prerogative to think that haters! ) Epic Fail written all over this movie. Its a start GL James

    • OhHelloYou

      February 11, 2012 at 3:49 am

@SamYarbroughJr What the fuck are you talking about? There is nothing new in movies ever. Everything has been done and the only reason people make movies is to make something of their own and sometimes not even that (shitty overblown remakes)

Why are you offended that he’s asking for money? He’s not forcing you to give him money. He’s not charging you a membership to watch any video on this site. He’s asking those who feel like donating to donate. You’re offended ESPECIALLY when you see “his suped up cameras”? The fuck? What the fuck do you think he’s raising money for? Making a movie costs money. Making a nice movie requires a nice camera and nice cameras cost money. His fundraiser came with a video that he made with the nice camera he was able to afford thanks to fundraiser. Besides cameras. there are a lot of other expenses that go into making a movie. Not to mention that he wants to do it on his own so he can retain creative control over it.

You and any other losers who think James is lying/greedy need to get over yourselves, get a clue, and go back to watching Transformers 13 or whatever you consider quality cinema.
