I always thought that Dr. Claw was Gadget’s brother because there is an episode where you see the top half of his face in a rear view mirror and he looks the same as Gadget.
I liked the show at first but then i started to hate it because of Penny. I mean, the show should have been called Penny and her dog instead. She does absolutely EVERYTHING! Gadget does nothing but getting his ass handed to him. Thats why i hated the show, i was always expecting Gadget to solve the missions by himself, but Penny always ended up doing his job, it was disappointing and it was not fun at all.
This should be interesting. I also liked this show a lot when I was younger–a LOT younger. I was… six, I think, the last time I remember watching an episode of it (and for reference I think James is four years older than me). As a result, I remember virtually nothing about it, outside of the theme song, locked in its eternal cage match death battle with DuckTales and Captain Planet for the earwormiest theme songs of my childhood. I learned a ton from the TMNT recap series, both in terms of the actual history of the show and its ultimate course (of which I was way too young to retain memory). I don’t expect the same level of detail here–after all, anyone deserves a break after the sheer volume of last month and the tournament–but it’ll all be new to me even if I’d already known it when I was five regardless.

same with me. I always cheered for Gadget. IMHO, would be awesome if he’d be just a little smarter, so he can crack cases by himself. If show needs Penny – o.k. let her be, but in the role of sidekick… or guardian angel (like Brain is an invisible helper…)
I thought James would told abot Gadget with moustashe.
In 200X there was a show, direct sequel to Gadget, when he became a leutenant in some secret organisation. He’s still dumb, but there were robots, equiped with same gadgets, which helped Penny. Finaly, that gizmos were battling the evil, but, of course, they lack Gadget’s …eerr… charisma?

There was an episode I remember where Gadget is chasing Dr Claw on the highways in their vehicles, and Gadget was being unusually competent and pissed Dr Claw off, but he got away anyway. I just remember it for not making Gadget look stupid for once and Dr Claw actually being threatened by Gadget. Anyone know which episode that was?
There’s a video on youtube that says you could edit out gadget completely and still have a coherent plotline, proving Penny and Brain are the real stars of the show. check it out
I wasn’t expecting to see this here at Cinemassacre at all, I didn’t even knew this cartoons aired on US. This is a French production I believe, or I’ve been wrong all my life assuming that…
James, you should review everything because your reviews are as entertaining as the shows themselves or even better!
I’m from Portugal and we are about the same age I believe, it’s interesting on how despite the distance and different cultures we grew on, so many things are still common to both. Keep the awesome job, and thanks for the work put on it, because I KNOW it gives ALOT of work, I imagine many people think the movies create themselves automatically…. ohh boy, wouldn’t that be great?!
@MK24ever It was not exactly french. It was a production from DIC in association with France 3 and other tv companies. Besides its not the first time James makes a video about Gadget. There is a parody he made where he even imitates his voice to explain how to use the site.

OMG! That’s awesome! Inspector Gadget reviews??? Apart from it being one of the cartoons of my childhood, I recently rewached the whole series again! I’m gonna enjoy this very very much!!
awesome. this was one of my favorite cartoons too. the theme song is amazing.
as a kid i had several dreams where i discovered Dr. Claw’s true face. One time he was nothing more than a giant computer, another his face was actually the Mad Logo. I know that his face has been revealed as an action figure, but I think we can all agree that version completely sucks and its better left to the imaginiation.
Cape-Man was an interesting sidekick. I look forward to the next video.
Holy crap…. Dr. Claw reminds me so much of Dr. Robotnik from the Sonic SatAM series. I wonder if DiC’s Robotnik design was influenced from this show’s villian.
Great review. Nice and calm, even when pointing out some of the sillier aspects of the character and show. If it were a certain other person who did this review, I’d be subjected to a lot shouting.
I never really cared for inspector gadget. I’d watch the cartoon if it was on, but I wouldn’t go look for it in the TV guide. I always had a problem with gadget being such an idiot. It used to piss me off. Like, I used to get upset that all those gadgets in his body were going to waste because he is such a retard.
Nevertheless, good review. You forgot Gadget’s other catchphrase, “Wowzers!”
I was also quite surprised because I thought “Inspecteur Gadget” to be a French production, too. The part with Gadget being drunk and horny was absolutely hilarious.
By the way, in the German dubbed version instead of saying “Go Go Gadget something” it was rather “Go Go Gadgetto something”.
I remember that there’s a video floating around youtube that’s basically a full episode of Inspector Gadget with Gadget removed. The plot made perfect sense. Gadget is usually the comic relief.
Even if I have only vague memories of watching Inspector Gadget, I really enjoyed this review. I love how James always gives a lot of trivia (like the inspiration behind characters and scenes), and also gives us his own “fan-theories” to explain the silly stuff from the show that so obviously wasn’t meant to be explained Every time I watch a Cinemassacre’s review I gain a new appreciation for the shows, movies and games reviewed. Awesome job.
“To make them think they can acomplish just as much, if not more, than their parents” I really liked this interpretation of the Smart-child/Useless-adult dynamic that is so common in cartoons, I never thought about it that way.
Inspector Gadget was the show that I would watch if I was bored and nothing else was on. I found it alright. I was always angry that Inspector Gadget was such an idiot and that Penny and Brain were the real heros. Looking back, I should have liked that about the show. I liked this video though, you pointed out many things that I missed or went over my head when I watched the show as a kid.
I have only watched a few inspector gadget VHS’s and I have to say that the most memorable thing from the series that still brings me flashbacks is the music. The opening theme is just pure gold and the songs playing in the background are catchy too.I hope James brings up the awesome OST this series has in the next episode
@grimnebulin Haha, I had a crush on Penny too. I was much younger though, like 6 or 7. It was my first cartoon crush. Later in life I found myself jacking off to Chun Li from time to time. It’s good to know that I am able to pull tail as an adult, because looking back, it could very well have gone either way.
I loved this show as a kid. It was carried by our indie TV channel who also showed great stuff like Tranzor Z and Robotech. Hell, now that I think about it they’re also the ones who carried the Nightmare on Elm Street TV show, Monsters and Kung Fu Theatre!
Does anybody remember the episode where Dr. Claw actually sort of wins and says “I’ve got you this time gadget” instead of “i’ll get you next time, Gadget” It may have been a two parter. Either that or I made that up. This was one of my favorite shows as a kid… always loved Get Smart as well when they would show that on Nick at Night.
You are trying to say that Gadget had some variety of gadgets, he’s so next-gen but he recieves his orders ON SHEET OF PAPER?! Whta about Wi-Fi? hahaha
Penny even then had an iPad (that book-like computer at 8:12)
We talking for one of my favorite tv shows in the 80s and i mean it! this series was actualy inspired by get smart most of it,even the gadget baloon exists on the get smart series.
Fun detail, in the latin american dub of this series, all of the gadgets were not activated with the classic “Go go gadget [name of the artifact here]” command, but instead, Gadget would come out with a silly rhyme, and it is implied that the incorrect use of said rhymes is the reason behind the malfunction of the gadgets.
Seem to remember there was a Gadget card set back in the early 90′s. One of the cards mentioned Gadget was a regular cop that got injured after slipping on a banana peel, which led to him being rebuilt with all his gadgets.
OH yeah, I’m looking forward to watch this review!
I grew up with Inspector Gadget and I always loved the show and still do. I also watched the first live action movie on TV but I never liked this crap.
Ace cartoon. Shame about how dr claw looks though. His hand n voice made out he was a badass. But his face don’t match up. Just looks like ur average mad scientist. Shame realy.
Sadly, being a ’90s kid, I never saw much of the original series, but I used to watch it’s re-imagined show, “Gadget Boy and Heather” every night on Toon Disney and I loved that show. I’m anxious to see part 2 of the review.
Speaking of inspector Clouseau connection, odd that you haven’t mentioned that Gadget had a mustache in the pilot which pretty much completed his resemblance to Clouseau.
Watch this show all the time as a kid! Thanks for the memories. However, wouldn’t “The Six Billion Dollar Man” count for the part when Inspector Gadget gets those gadgets in his body?
One of my favorite cartoon shows. I remember first watching it on the D.J. Kat Show on Sky Channel, and on the Fun Factory during weekends when I was a kid.
One fun fact: This cartoon was so popular, Gadget made cameos on other shows like Heathcliff and Diplodos.
I remember this cartoon since I was a kid when WNYW-TV (channel 5) aired the show on a weekday afternoon back around 1986. “Get Smart” wasn’t on channel 5 back then, but it usually shown on WPIX-TV (channel 11) back in 70′s, but it appeared back in 2008 as part of a marathon where WPIX-TV celebrated its 60th anniversary where they aired reruns of shows that channel 11 usually ran 20 to 30 years ago. I also remember the 1999 live action film with Matthew Broderick and the 2003 film “Inspector Gadget 2″, but I saw it once on the Disney Channel and it was a complete garbage. French Stewart was in the 2nd film but no Matthew Broderick. I also remember that song was used in the classic hip-hop song from 1985 called “The Show” by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick, but it played a few bars of the “Inspector Gadget” theme song. That fits well.
Just to continue on, Inspector Gadget appears on many of the DVD releases featuring shows from DIC including “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “Super Mario Bros. Super Show” and the short lived animated TV series “The Wizard of Oz”. All of these DIC titles had the “Easy Play” DVD feature banner on top with Inspector Gadget was on there, but on the menu screen, you can hear Gadget ask our viewers where he helps you to navigate the menu screen. This is one of the most funniest help feature ever made. I posted a video of that a few months ago of that one, it’s included on my copy of “The Wizard of Oz” cartoon DVD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vKlUsNOOJA
Growing up in the early 90′s was, oh man, like a dream.
They don’t make cartoons nowadays like they used to. Well, the only exception being Adventure Time, but that doesn’t have quite the same feel as Inspector Gadget. I mean, it was like some sort of crazy cracked up parody of James Bond. I loved it.
Looking forward to the next part, man.
Also, I was never able to actually finish the show, so to speak. Did we ever get to see Claw’s face?
@Captain GENE As i know because like you i am a big fan of this cartoon series untill the last episode gadget fails to capture claw again and we never have the chance to see his real face.I know a snes game now that we see dr claw’s face in the game that looks like dr willy from mega man.
New cartoons catered towards children suck ASS. The downward slope in quality began with Batman Beyond and cartoons started becoming “edgy” and stuff in the late 90′s/early 2000s. Now when I turn on a T.V. with cable and check it out cartoon network it’s all this colorful zany shit that still manages to be unoriginal with smug ass characters and dumb oneliners they play over and over again in the commercials. GAH I HATE IT, gimme some fucking Ren and Stimpy
@EXPLODA! Yes…..because Ren & Stimpy was quality television, and Batman Beyond wasn’t. lolWhat are you talking about dude? So I take it you didn’t like X-Men or Batman the Animated Series then either? They were pretty “dark and edgy” too. So was the Superman Cartoon, and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. If they had made those cartoons cheesy and silly, it would have defeated the purpose.I totally agree that most modern TV cartoons suck. But Batman Beyond was hardly the start of that. You want to point somewhere, try crap like Recess, or Cat-Dog, or Hey Arnold.

I don’t expect the same level of detail here–after all, anyone deserves a break after the sheer volume of last month and the tournament–but it’ll all be new to me even if I’d already known it when I was five regardless.
P.S. For what it’s worth, I think “go go gadget boner” sounds funnier.
November 18, 2011 at 7:01 am
I liked the movie origin story of Gadget better because it actually makes sense.
I guess 80′s cartoons just didn’t bother with the sense part.

same with me. I always cheered for Gadget. IMHO, would be awesome if he’d be just a little smarter, so he can crack cases by himself. If show needs Penny – o.k. let her be, but in the role of sidekick… or guardian angel (like Brain is an invisible helper…)

love these kind of reviews. this is another hilarious one in the books. keep it up james, im a diehard fan.
November 18, 2011 at 10:14 pm
Fun detail, in the latin american dub of this series, all of the gadgets were not activated with the classic “Go go gadget [name of the artifact here]” command, but instead, Gadget would come out with a silly rhyme, and it is implied that the incorrect use of said rhymes is the reason behind the malfunction of the gadgets.
November 19, 2011 at 12:26 am
@DateRyusei that would make a lot of sense actually. also the phrase is fun fact, ya know just saying for future using of the phrase.
November 18, 2011 at 11:38 pm

November 19, 2011 at 3:10 am
Seem to remember there was a Gadget card set back in the early 90′s. One of the cards mentioned Gadget was a regular cop that got injured after slipping on a banana peel, which led to him being rebuilt with all his gadgets.
November 19, 2011 at 3:10 am
We’re going top review this DVD, so don’t be surproised.
November 19, 2011 at 3:10 am

November 19, 2011 at 3:10 am
Sadly, being a ’90s kid, I never saw much of the original series, but I used to watch it’s re-imagined show, “Gadget Boy and Heather” every night on Toon Disney and I loved that show. I’m anxious to see part 2 of the review.
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
I just watched it. Made me laugh, made me cuddle again in cartoon nostalgia. Thanks so much, I wanna see part 2 really bad
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am

November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
Speaking of inspector Clouseau connection, odd that you haven’t mentioned that Gadget had a mustache in the pilot which pretty much completed his resemblance to Clouseau.
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
I used to think Penny was hot!
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
My favourite series, period. Can’t wait for the second part, any thoughts on release date? Cheers!

November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
Watch this show all the time as a kid! Thanks for the memories. However, wouldn’t “The Six Billion Dollar Man” count for the part when Inspector Gadget gets those gadgets in his body?
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
The conversations with Brain were always silly, but I prefer the conversations of Earthworm Jim & Peter Puppy with Snot. =)
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
One of my favorite cartoon shows. I remember first watching it on the D.J. Kat Show on Sky Channel, and on the Fun Factory during weekends when I was a kid.
One fun fact: This cartoon was so popular, Gadget made cameos on other shows like Heathcliff and Diplodos.
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
November 19, 2011 at 3:11 am
November 19, 2011 at 3:28 am
Ah, one of my favourite shows…
November 19, 2011 at 6:18 am
Growing up in the early 90′s was, oh man, like a dream.
They don’t make cartoons nowadays like they used to. Well, the only exception being Adventure Time, but that doesn’t have quite the same feel as Inspector Gadget. I mean, it was like some sort of crazy cracked up parody of James Bond. I loved it.
Looking forward to the next part, man.
Also, I was never able to actually finish the show, so to speak. Did we ever get to see Claw’s face?
November 19, 2011 at 8:06 am
@Captain GENE As i know because like you i am a big fan of this cartoon series untill the last episode gadget fails to capture claw again and we never have the chance to see his real face.I know a snes game now that we see dr claw’s face in the game that looks like dr willy from mega man.
November 19, 2011 at 6:36 am
New cartoons catered towards children suck ASS. The downward slope in quality began with Batman Beyond and cartoons started becoming “edgy” and stuff in the late 90′s/early 2000s. Now when I turn on a T.V. with cable and check it out cartoon network it’s all this colorful zany shit that still manages to be unoriginal with smug ass characters and dumb oneliners they play over and over again in the commercials. GAH I HATE IT, gimme some fucking Ren and Stimpy
November 19, 2011 at 8:33 am
November 19, 2011 at 11:09 am
Admit it, you only split this review in two so you could do the “Next Time” bit.
November 19, 2011 at 3:46 pm
Penny is my waifu.
November 19, 2011 at 8:34 pm
I really hope you comment on the weird voice and mustachioed episodes of Gadget, I could never figure that shit out when I was a kid.
