God, I always hated this show as a kid because I was so frustrated with how incompetent Gadget was despite having an incredible arsenal

I always thought that Dr. Claw was Gadget’s brother because there is an episode where you see the top half of his face in a rear view mirror and he looks the same as Gadget.

Did you notice that when he’s using the gadget flashlight he’s flipping you the bird?

I knew you were going to say that “Go-Go Gadget Dick” thing. My friends and I used to joke about that all the time.

This was in my top 3 cartoons when I was young! This, TMNT and Real Ghostbusters

I liked the show at first but then i started to hate it because of Penny. I mean, the show should have been called Penny and her dog instead. She does absolutely EVERYTHING! Gadget does nothing but getting his ass handed to him. Thats why i hated the show, i was always expecting Gadget to solve the missions by himself, but Penny always ended up doing his job, it was disappointing and it was not fun at all.

  • salculd

    November 18, 2011 at 6:41 am

This should be interesting. I also liked this show a lot when I was younger–a LOT younger. I was… six, I think, the last time I remember watching an episode of it (and for reference I think James is four years older than me). As a result, I remember virtually nothing about it, outside of the theme song, locked in its eternal cage match death battle with DuckTales and Captain Planet for the earwormiest theme songs of my childhood. I learned a ton from the TMNT recap series, both in terms of the actual history of the show and its ultimate course (of which I was way too young to retain memory). I don’t expect the same level of detail here–after all, anyone deserves a break after the sheer volume of last month and the tournament–but it’ll all be new to me even if I’d already known it when I was five regardless.

P.S. For what it’s worth, I think “go go gadget boner” sounds funnier.

I liked the movie origin story of Gadget better because it actually makes sense.

I guess 80′s cartoons just didn’t bother with the sense part.

same with me. I always cheered for Gadget. IMHO, would be awesome if he’d be just a little smarter, so he can crack cases by himself. If show needs Penny – o.k. let her be, but in the role of sidekick… or guardian angel (like Brain is an invisible helper…)

I thought James would told abot Gadget with moustashe.

In 200X there was a show, direct sequel to Gadget, when he became a leutenant in some secret organisation. He’s still dumb, but there were robots, equiped with same gadgets, which helped Penny. Finaly, that gizmos were battling the evil, but, of course, they lack Gadget’s …eerr… charisma?

Baby-Gadget or i-forgot-how-it-was-caalled just fails, imo. Can’t remember a thing. Maby it;s for better.

      November 18, 2011 at 9:36 am

@PetrMatafonov Gadget and the Gadgetinis was it’s title.

I still don’t believe why they made Penny look like 15 when she was only 11 in the sequel @_o

      • PetrMatafonov

        November 18, 2011 at 11:07 am

@LukasSprehn@_o Nah, in closing sentence i was talking about “Gadget Boy & Heather”

      • LukasSprehn

        November 19, 2011 at 6:36 pm

@PetrMatafonov@_o Well, Gadget and the Gadgettinis had two smart Gadget robot clones, Penny is now an agent (I think), 11 years of age, they cut out Brains (though he comes back later, fearing Gadget due to all the stuff he’s been through ’cause of him). But Gadget is not a lieutenant there I guess :)

  • galad

    November 18, 2011 at 7:44 am

There was an episode I remember where Gadget is chasing Dr Claw on the highways in their vehicles, and Gadget was being unusually competent and pissed Dr Claw off, but he got away anyway. I just remember it for not making Gadget look stupid for once and Dr Claw actually being threatened by Gadget. Anyone know which episode that was?

  • madroc

    November 18, 2011 at 9:52 am

There’s a video on youtube that says you could edit out gadget completely and still have a coherent plotline, proving Penny and Brain are the real stars of the show. check it out

I wasn’t expecting to see this here at Cinemassacre at all, I didn’t even knew this cartoons aired on US. This is a French production I believe, or I’ve been wrong all my life assuming that…

James, you should review everything because your reviews are as entertaining as the shows themselves or even better!

I’m from Portugal and we are about the same age I believe, it’s interesting on how despite the distance and different cultures we grew on, so many things are still common to both. Keep the awesome job, and thanks for the work put on it, because I KNOW it gives ALOT of work, I imagine many people think the movies create themselves automatically…. ohh boy, wouldn’t that be great?!

    • supercain

      November 18, 2011 at 10:15 am

@MK24ever It was not exactly french. It was a production from DIC in association with France 3 and other tv companies. Besides its not the first time James makes a video about Gadget. There is a parody he made where he even imitates his voice to explain how to use the site.

      • MK24ever

        November 18, 2011 at 11:40 am

@supercain@MK24ever Thanks for the heads up, I thought that I had seen all James videos by now, you just proved me wrong…

    November 18, 2011 at 10:39 am

Dr. Claw: Uncle Gadget never told you what happened to your father.

Penny: He told me enough. He told me you killed him!

Dr. Claw: No, I am your father!

With a S.O.P.A bill in the works.. does this mean the end of AVGN series? I hope not.. I been following this show for years, and hope does not end.. Thats if James Rolfe has had enough and wants too call it quits.. That be fine, but hope doesn’t get shut down cause of the S.O.P.A Bill.. Stop this Bill now..

  • JokersNuts

    November 18, 2011 at 11:24 am

awesome. this was one of my favorite cartoons too. the theme song is amazing.

as a kid i had several dreams where i discovered Dr. Claw’s true face. One time he was nothing more than a giant computer, another his face was actually the Mad Logo. I know that his face has been revealed as an action figure, but I think we can all agree that version completely sucks and its better left to the imaginiation.

Cape-Man was an interesting sidekick. I look forward to the next video.

  • Erwinator

    November 18, 2011 at 1:14 pm

one of my childhood tv-shows too :D (i’m from the 90′ties) I also watched Scooby-Doo :D and more tv shows like Ducktales.

  • TommyO'Neil

    November 18, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Holy crap…. Dr. Claw reminds me so much of Dr. Robotnik from the Sonic SatAM series. I wonder if DiC’s Robotnik design was influenced from this show’s villian.

    • DaveScheepstra

      November 18, 2011 at 1:17 pm

@TommyO’Neil Didn’t DiC also make Inspector Gadget? If that’s the case, I’d say so.

Great review. Nice and calm, even when pointing out some of the sillier aspects of the character and show. If it were a certain other person who did this review, I’d be subjected to a lot shouting.

  • DonSkiver

    November 18, 2011 at 1:44 pm

I never really cared for inspector gadget. I’d watch the cartoon if it was on, but I wouldn’t go look for it in the TV guide. I always had a problem with gadget being such an idiot. It used to piss me off. Like, I used to get upset that all those gadgets in his body were going to waste because he is such a retard.

Nevertheless, good review. You forgot Gadget’s other catchphrase, “Wowzers!”

  • Skeletor

    November 18, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I was also quite surprised because I thought “Inspecteur Gadget” to be a French production, too. The part with Gadget being drunk and horny was absolutely hilarious.

By the way, in the German dubbed version instead of saying “Go Go Gadget something” it was rather “Go Go Gadgetto something”.

  • AzureLeeonardo

    November 18, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I remember that there’s a video floating around youtube that’s basically a full episode of Inspector Gadget with Gadget removed. The plot made perfect sense. Gadget is usually the comic relief.

    November 18, 2011 at 3:18 pm

hi, james!great video as usual… when will you do a Robocop review? that would be awesome.

  • Lando Funk

    November 18, 2011 at 3:26 pm

Great stuff! Loved this show when I was growing up as well. We always marveled at Penny’s computer book and wanted one for ourselves :)

  • LicaWolf

    November 18, 2011 at 3:33 pm

    Oh, we’re back to livefyre?

Even if I have only vague memories of watching Inspector Gadget, I really enjoyed this review. I love how James always gives a lot of trivia (like the inspiration behind characters and scenes), and also gives us his own “fan-theories” to explain the silly stuff from the show that so obviously wasn’t meant to be explained :P Every time I watch a Cinemassacre’s review I gain a new appreciation for the shows, movies and games reviewed. Awesome job.

“To make them think they can acomplish just as much, if not more, than their parents” I really liked this interpretation of the Smart-child/Useless-adult dynamic that is so common in cartoons, I never thought about it that way.

    I can’t wait for part two :)

  • Kaldary

    November 18, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Inspector Gadget was the show that I would watch if I was bored and nothing else was on. I found it alright. I was always angry that Inspector Gadget was such an idiot and that Penny and Brain were the real heros. Looking back, I should have liked that about the show. I liked this video though, you pointed out many things that I missed or went over my head when I watched the show as a kid.

  • RaiR

    November 18, 2011 at 4:14 pm

I have only watched a few inspector gadget VHS’s and I have to say that the most memorable thing from the series that still brings me flashbacks is the music. The opening theme is just pure gold and the songs playing in the background are catchy too.I hope James brings up the awesome OST this series has in the next episode :)

  • grimnebulin

    November 18, 2011 at 4:32 pm

Ah, Penny. I had a little bit of a crush on her as a young teen watching this show. So smart and cute!

    • IDrinkBatUrine

      November 18, 2011 at 5:08 pm

@grimnebulin Haha, I had a crush on Penny too. I was much younger though, like 6 or 7. It was my first cartoon crush. Later in life I found myself jacking off to Chun Li from time to time. It’s good to know that I am able to pull tail as an adult, because looking back, it could very well have gone either way.

  • willgut07

    November 18, 2011 at 4:37 pm

I loved this show as a kid. It was carried by our indie TV channel who also showed great stuff like Tranzor Z and Robotech. Hell, now that I think about it they’re also the ones who carried the Nightmare on Elm Street TV show, Monsters and Kung Fu Theatre!

Watching these clips, the show still looks fun.

  • valgalder

    November 18, 2011 at 4:44 pm

Does anybody remember the episode where Dr. Claw actually sort of wins and says “I’ve got you this time gadget” instead of “i’ll get you next time, Gadget” It may have been a two parter. Either that or I made that up. This was one of my favorite shows as a kid… always loved Get Smart as well when they would show that on Nick at Night.

  • LisVender

    November 18, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Penny even then had an iPad :) (that book-like computer at 8:12)

  • DateRyusei

    November 18, 2011 at 10:14 pm

Fun detail, in the latin american dub of this series, all of the gadgets were not activated with the classic “Go go gadget [name of the artifact here]” command, but instead, Gadget would come out with a silly rhyme, and it is implied that the incorrect use of said rhymes is the reason behind the malfunction of the gadgets.

    • GWristen

      November 19, 2011 at 12:26 am

@DateRyusei that would make a lot of sense actually. also the phrase is fun fact, ya know just saying for future using of the phrase.

One of my favorite cartoon shows. I remember first watching it on the D.J. Kat Show on Sky Channel, and on the Fun Factory during weekends when I was a kid.

One fun fact: This cartoon was so popular, Gadget made cameos on other shows like Heathcliff and Diplodos. :)

I remember this cartoon since I was a kid when WNYW-TV (channel 5) aired the show on a weekday afternoon back around 1986. “Get Smart” wasn’t on channel 5 back then, but it usually shown on WPIX-TV (channel 11) back in 70′s, but it appeared back in 2008 as part of a marathon where WPIX-TV celebrated its 60th anniversary where they aired reruns of shows that channel 11 usually ran 20 to 30 years ago. I also remember the 1999 live action film with Matthew Broderick and the 2003 film “Inspector Gadget 2″, but I saw it once on the Disney Channel and it was a complete garbage. French Stewart was in the 2nd film but no Matthew Broderick. I also remember that song was used in the classic hip-hop song from 1985 called “The Show” by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick, but it played a few bars of the “Inspector Gadget” theme song. That fits well.

Just to continue on, Inspector Gadget appears on many of the DVD releases featuring shows from DIC including “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “Super Mario Bros. Super Show” and the short lived animated TV series “The Wizard of Oz”. All of these DIC titles had the “Easy Play” DVD feature banner on top with Inspector Gadget was on there, but on the menu screen, you can hear Gadget ask our viewers where he helps you to navigate the menu screen. This is one of the most funniest help feature ever made. I posted a video of that a few months ago of that one, it’s included on my copy of “The Wizard of Oz” cartoon DVD. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vKlUsNOOJA

Growing up in the early 90′s was, oh man, like a dream.

They don’t make cartoons nowadays like they used to. Well, the only exception being Adventure Time, but that doesn’t have quite the same feel as Inspector Gadget. I mean, it was like some sort of crazy cracked up parody of James Bond. I loved it.

Looking forward to the next part, man.

Also, I was never able to actually finish the show, so to speak. Did we ever get to see Claw’s face?

    • TasosSaroglou

      November 19, 2011 at 8:06 am

@Captain GENE As i know because like you i am a big fan of this cartoon series untill the last episode gadget fails to capture claw again and we never have the chance to see his real face.I know a snes game now that we see dr claw’s face in the game that looks like dr willy from mega man.

New cartoons catered towards children suck ASS. The downward slope in quality began with Batman Beyond and cartoons started becoming “edgy” and stuff in the late 90′s/early 2000s. Now when I turn on a T.V. with cable and check it out cartoon network it’s all this colorful zany shit that still manages to be unoriginal with smug ass characters and dumb oneliners they play over and over again in the commercials. GAH I HATE IT, gimme some fucking Ren and Stimpy

    • Devil_Rising

      November 19, 2011 at 8:33 am

@EXPLODA! Yes…..because Ren & Stimpy was quality television, and Batman Beyond wasn’t. lolWhat are you talking about dude? So I take it you didn’t like X-Men or Batman the Animated Series then either? They were pretty “dark and edgy” too. So was the Superman Cartoon, and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited. If they had made those cartoons cheesy and silly, it would have defeated the purpose.I totally agree that most modern TV cartoons suck. But Batman Beyond was hardly the start of that. You want to point somewhere, try crap like Recess, or Cat-Dog, or Hey Arnold.

i loved this show as a kid! what a great concept for a cartoon char. the absurdity of it all is just genius!

and i can totaly remember having a crush on Penny :P At the time the Atari blew my mind so i wanted that book she had sooo bad

if anyone has mentioned cartoons nowadays suck, id second that. i watch them with my neice and wonder how she isnt going to grow up to be a psycho murderer. they are that bad

  • FlamaJiberish

    November 19, 2011 at 10:45 pm

The car from Mad at the end is a reference to Fantomas, a french villain from the 60′s where Louis de Funes acted as a detective trying to arrest him. Fantomas had a car that turned into a plane and the idea was later used in a James Bond movie. I don’t know if Fantomas was the first but it’s the oldest i can remember of.

Great review btw, i felt so nostalgic i almost cried ^^’

I also made the connection between Get Smart & Inspector Gadget when I was a kid.

This is a cartoon I totally expect to get like a gritty reboot or something.

      November 20, 2011 at 8:36 am

@likalaruku Yes i have finished the entire get smart series that actualy wached because i have learn that he was actualy the actor that had give his voice to gadget as well! @freetouse@MotherFucker Mike

@freetouse Lol nah man it was a joke, the video worked fine from the beginning. I was just making fun of Inspector Gadget. There was a video with James and Mike with the Super Mario DVD Review and it had Inspector Gadget telling users (in detail) how to play some quiz game, or how to play a video. There was a video sometime a week after when James and Mike did Inspector Gadget tutorial on Cinemassacre homepage. And so when this was uploaded on site, immediately it reminded me of those videos lol. So nothing’s wrong.

    I mean….if you’re an adult….still comparing today’s shows to the 80s and 90s….just stop. Get over it…..you’re not a child anymore……

I’m sure when we were kids our parents looked at toons we watched and thought they were ridiculous and corny as well…..

This isnt any different than saying “Awww, Merona and Mossimo have got NOTHING on Jordache an Levi jeans when I was in middle school!” You dont hear people saying that….

Seriously, who sits there an as ADULT and tries to comprehend why a KID”s show doesnt connect with them? lol…..it’s common knowledge. Can you fit the t-shirt you were in 3rd grade..i doubt it…. same logic….think about it…

Shows that I can watch as a adult…and still enjoy are Regular Show, the Looney Tunes Show, Batman Beyond, Justice League……they have enough humor and action that can satisfy an adult and child.

Same with music, people can’t seem to let go of what they had when they were children. They want every song on the radio to be remotely similar 90s music. If that’s the case…..wipe your tears…..go on youtube..find similar independent/underground artists..and be happy. We all win.. Just stop whining about what happened over two decades ago….grow up. The pop artists are appealing to their own audience…if you dont like…dont reply…similar with tv shows…if you’re not interested..change the channel. Dont become Peter Pan on us….geez. Living in your 2nd or 3rd childhood.

Enjoy the nostalgia……what 30+ year old business man is gonna sit at his desk and say…*sigh* i sure do miss not having responsibility….im quitting my job and moving back in with mom. *sigh* Point has been made. I’m signing off.

Although you made a valid point, I think everybody here knows that, but eey is it this page not about nostalgia? cannot we talk here about how good these cartoons were? even when we know it is not completely true. Come on, would you go to a 90s/80s revival party and complain that all the people there should move on? maybe they are not all the day day dreaming about 90s/80s, just these few minutes that these videos last.

Great piece James. I was also a big fan of Inspector Gadget growing up. I would have my mom videotape the episodes since they came on as I was leaving for school every morning and watch them when I got home. She had to do the same for M.A.S.K. too. DiC put out some great cartoons in the 80′s.

Hey guys, i’m trying to find the name of an old cartoon, i remember very little about it, but i did enjoy it when i was about 8. It was sci-fi-ish, and i most distinctly remember at their base they had a bunch of robot heads on shelves, including a pink one that had a REALLY strained laugh, which it did pretty much every time it talked.

I believe Penny is an Orphan. Don’t ask me why, but I just remember her being called one. In an old Eminem song, he says go go gadget dick lol. Also I cannot think of Inspector Gadget without remembering the toon porn that someone drew I found right when I went on the internet all the time when I was 17-18 years old 11 years ago. heh the gadget Generic villians had the best voice actors, they always sounded like those kids that werent alowed to have sharp objects, although it was a bit creepy that they tied Penny up in practically every episode. although its strange that tying a loose hankey over someones mouth and nose kept them from making any sound at all

    • DArcyFitzpatrick

      December 12, 2011 at 2:44 pm

actually come to think of it the Generic Mad agents also pulled her into windowless molester vans alot too, that show WAS creepy at times. I always used to wonder about Dr claws voice actor too, it seems there was 2 voices the badass cool original dr claw voice, and one that sounds like New Freddy, i wonder if they were 2 different voice actors or if the one guy tore his voice up doing the original voice? but man thanks to Teletoon retro its easy to see its just as awesome now as it was when i was 5

I hate saying this, but I’m regretfully on negative terms with one of the sound editors of this show (hint: his last name rhymes with “fear”). Although he’s done more since Inspector Gadget (including the Magic School Bus, Rupert, and Freaky Stories), he unfortunately left one of the most enjoyable interviews of all time incomplete (with who, I must not say). He gave no good reason (he did give a reason, but it’s so weak it doesn’t count for me), no apology, no nothing. After I typed him a regretful message (after an unexpected 6 hour shift, he kicked me out as a YouTube subscriber. I tried to email him how sorry I was sending that message (I sent way too many messages). The dude later commented on my YouTube channel telling me to “leave him alone, he’s not my friend, he doesn’t care about my problems, it’s all over, stop acting like a pestering freak, get lost, get help!” After speaking with my family (and taking a communications class and a psychology class), I finally asked myself, “What the hell was I thinking?”

I’m sorry for those actions. I’ll never do stuff like that again. Do not make the same mistakes I made, or else the consequences may be worse.

BOTTOM LINE: Let life roll. Don’t troll.

  • hankforeman91

But on a less personal and more positive note, the animation, voice acting, editing (especially the sounds), and everything else is pretty good! Also, no one here mentioned that co-creator Bruno Bianchi passed away last month. May he rest in peace. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have had the amazing animation!
