AVGN: The Movie (Fundraising campaign on IndieGoGo)

James / October 17th, 2011

Thanks everybody for your recent donations for the AVGN Movie. We’ve gotten a lot of requests to use a fundraiser site. We’ve done a lot of research on it in the past few months and decided to go with IndieGoGo. Check out the video, or go straight to our new donation page at:

Hey James! Just wanna say please keep the options to donate there. I’m in a tight spot right now, but when my budget gets just a little bit of wiggle room, I’ll definitely send a bit your way. The least I can do considering the massive amount of great and free entertainment I’ve enjoyed on this site!

Can’t wait for the movie :D!

  • October 17, 2011 at 1:45 pm

I have every one of your DVDs, a hat, and two shirts. I hope that helps. Good luck with the movie! I hope you shoot it in HD so that we can get it on blu-ray!

Awesome! I’ll definitely donate again. Hope this also means that all the future AVGN episodes will be in high definition! Good luck with everything James!

Which camera did you buy? Your video looks great!

    October 17, 2011 at 2:01 pm

A little off topic maybe, and an even smaller spoiler alert:

I LOVE the music you choose in this video! You used it in the swordquest episode, and since then i have it on my mp3 player!
I really look forward to hearing it in the movie! Pretty please!!!

Another question: Is a part the money that you earn from t-shirts and dvds also going into the movie like the donations or are they strictly seperated? Just curious.

Anyway, I’m done with studying in a few month and will buy and maybe also donate when i earn some money!

    Good Luck and Hafe Fun!

I am really glad that the fundraiser went well up to this point.

But i have a little Question. Why did you choose Indiegogo?

I really love Crowdfunding and how it helps people with great ideas. But i really don’t like Indiegogo. I just don’t feel save enough without Kickstarters all-or-nothing policy.

Definitely have to echo the wish of seeing future productions in (full) HD. It would be a shame not to!!

    October 17, 2011 at 4:04 pm

LOL, this is quite messed up O.o 200 dollars for your name in the credits? O.o

Most filmmakers, even the high professionals, then using Kickstarter or IndieGoGo (which I use for my own productions too :)) make it 10-20 or maybe 30…

  • October 17, 2011 at 4:24 pm

Hope this does well, I’d donate if I could but unemployed right now πŸ™

  • October 17, 2011 at 5:32 pm

    Hey James/Mike.

I know of a *really good*, efficient and really(!) easy way you could get a lot of attention and, hopefully, get a lot(!) more donations. Please trust me on this one and if you’re interested, contact me at my e-mail. I’ll get right back at you.

    Thanks!

  • October 17, 2011 at 5:34 pm

I’ve already donated what I can spare for this through PayPal. I still say it’s enough of a reward to say “I was an Executive Producer of The Angry Video Game Nerd Movie.” FUCK TO THE YEAH.

    October 17, 2011 at 6:33 pm

    Looking mighty fine there, James.

  • October 17, 2011 at 6:36 pm

One-sentence plot spoiler from IndieGoGo: “A disgruntled gamer/ internet celebrity has to overcome his phobia of the worst video game in the world to save his fans.”

  • October 17, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Why isn’t one of the contribution perks a copy of the finished movie?

I’d be thrilled to donate, say, $100 in exchange for a signed copy of the finished product on Blu (or even DVD). That’d just be like an expensive pre-order. I don’t really want the script or a signed photo as much as I just want the movie πŸ˜€

James, I noticed the new camera right away! Lookin’ good!

I will donate a little more when I get some extra cash, I am really excited about this movie.

You’re the man, James! Keep up the great work.

  • nanofuture

    October 17, 2011 at 7:18 pm

Expanding on John Stiles’ excellent idea, why not have two additional tiers to what you have on your fundraiser. On a lower tier let people pre-order a DVD / Blu-ray copy of the movie, say $30 dvd and $40 blu-ray. On a higher tier let people pre-order a signed DVD / blu-ray, say $60 dvd and $70 blu-ray.

You can change the prices around of course depending on how much it costs and whatnot, but I think a lot of people would go for it. I know I would.

If ET is going to play a major part in this movie, please reach out to the game’s programmer (and filmmaker) Howard Scott Warshaw to play a part.

  • October 17, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Thanks for the update James, we’re all ridiculously excited for this thing even though its a long way off and I want to support the movie, i’ll definitely check out indiegogo and i’ll let friends know as well. by the way, kick ass camera man…image quality is immaculate tits bro, i can’t wait to see corny turds flying into games and shit in full cinematic glory

    Go for it James!
By the way I immediately noticed the video quality, it’s great!

  • October 17, 2011 at 9:47 pm

That’s the first thing I noticed, even before I played the vid, the boost in image quality. Nice!

  • JamesRolfe

    October 17, 2011 at 11:16 pm

Love the new video quality! Just donated, keep up the great work!

  • October 18, 2011 at 12:26 am

It’s great you found another source of fundraising. I already donated on PayPal, but I plan to donate again come pay day….definitely worth it. And the incentives are a nice added bonus, but I would’ve done it for nothing more than a promise of a great movie!!

    October 18, 2011 at 9:13 am

Why dont you make a limited edition “I helped the fucking nerd make his movie” T-shirts and sell them for 50 buck or more. Make like 100 of them and they will be collectibles for the hardcore fans, also you could let motherfucker mike sign them for increased value πŸ˜€ Some friendly advice

    October 18, 2011 at 10:51 am

The new camera looks great! What brand/type is it? Judging from the nice DOF it could be a Canon DSLR or one of the new Sony ones, is that right?
    Looking forward to your movie!

  • Jamie88

    October 18, 2011 at 10:51 am

Hey James, I have not contributed before, but with all these cool perks I definately will now. $1000 is a bit steep, but for an extra roll in the movie, it’s hard to resist! May consider it…

Either way, I’m definately contributing regardless, just be sure to give us one hell of a movie!

  • Ben_from_G-town

    October 18, 2011 at 11:53 am

Hmm, I do definitely agree with the others that the new picture quality is great! I’ve been out of work for a while, so I probably won’t be able to donate any time soon. Though, your sales of DVDs and merch help you with funds, correct? Because I definitely want to get your DVDs one of these days, and I’m sure the added boost of more sales of those would help you out!

Do you know what I just realized? Im paying for regular television subscription with a lot of channels which Im not watching very much. Though free things on the internet like cinemassacre Im not spendning a single cent on, and this media I enjoy to watch very much.

How did this paradox develop, Im paying for what I dont enjoy watching, but what I do enjoy Im not paying for? Im really a supporter of free internet phenomenon(s) which are anything but “big mighty corporation”, so I would love to donate for the AVGN the movie.
I really like what James is producing and instead of focusing everthing on AVGN hes keeping all media produced under “Cinemassacre productions” which I think is a smart idea.
Hes film making passion didnt start with avgn and will not end with it as well.
Cant wait for the movie! Donate just 10dollars guys or gals, if your budget is tight! Cheers from Europe, Sweden (Gothenburg)!

    October 19, 2011 at 5:19 am

Hey guys IΒ΄d ike to know, if I donate 200$ to get the special thanks in the credits, what would I have, my real name / surname there? or just my nick? what if I have two names and surnames, would It be listed despite being a little messy? thanks, looking forward for an answer

  • October 19, 2011 at 7:05 am

Looking good man! That was funny, I was thinking it before you said it. As a fan it’s exciting to be a part of something you’re producing, I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say it’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to donate.
I’ll echo what some other folks are saying with the fact that we spend so much every month for entertainment, half of which is crap and the other half we usually don’t even watch.

In the future that’s how people should get paid for media entertainment. Wouldn’t that be a nice world? A fan-supported, almost democratic form of entertainment!

So my money would go to:
    – James Rolfe
    – Gordon Ramsey
    – Anthony Bourdain

Keep pluggin’ away, you have tons of support out there.

    …another beg-a-thon here we go…

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    October 19, 2011 at 3:04 pm

If the donations don’t stop at 75k, I think you can easily raise 1 million dollars in 100 days.

…And then mysteriously disappear from the internet forever.

…And be rumored to be living in paradise on some secluded island!

Seriously I hope the site allows you to raise more than the target goal just so the movie can be even better than originally anticipated. The cash is coming in much faster than I anticipated at least.

  • October 19, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Well, I’m one of those who donated early so won’t get the perks, but I guess seeing how happy you are with the new camera is good enough.

  • Zagdil

    October 19, 2011 at 4:10 pm

The camera is amazing. I cant wait to see it in action. Gives me goosebumps.

Finally I have the chance to help, too. I wont miss it!

  • October 21, 2011 at 3:45 am

I hope my donation helped out.
But I’m a little confused over something. It says in James’ description on Indiegogo to include e-mail adress in order to collect the perks, though the donation didn’t ask for my e-mail anywhere, only full name and home adress?

  • Jimmy Fart Face

    October 21, 2011 at 8:20 pm

I really can’t believe that a studio won’t get behind this. Someone needs to clue these old school Hollywood geezers in on what the people want to see. In a way I like it; it’s underground which always = cool, but I would still love to see James’ movie get some serious funding and promotion.
    Oh Well…
Hollywood is just too busy rebooting Pretty Woman to give a fuck about what the people really want to see.

    $20000 is quite a lot
$1000 is too rich for my blood
I’d love to donate $200, but I’ll have to check with my funds to see if that’s even possible for me. I will donate something though !! You can count on it !!

  • October 24, 2011 at 10:16 am

You should give all the people that donated early the same prizes.

    I feel bad that I can’t donate since I’m just a 14 year old kid who’s broke.

Just wanted to say: 67 thousand bucks already raised and there’s 102 days left. You should put a higher number on that fundraising thingy. Go James! πŸ˜€ I can’t wait to see the AVGN Movie!

Rodriguez had a $7,000 budget for El Mariachi!
you have $ 75,000, do something good out of it: D

    • KrisTope

      December 23, 2011 at 3:59 am

El Mariachi cost $220,000. The shooting budget was $9,000; but that is hardly all that is involved in filmmaking. Yes, post-production was much more expensive in 1992 than it is today, but it is still expensive to do well.

  • Andreana

    December 23, 2011 at 8:19 am

Hi my name is Andreana and I am asking anyone that can help me find my brother and my sister this means so much and I need to find them right away SOS matter. Due to the fact that my dad needs help we want to organize an intervention with the TV Program that will be airing in Edmonton Alberta. There is so much to say about this but there is so little time. I am so looking forward to meeting them for the first time and dealing with my sister and brothers emotions about meeting them in this way. Right now I need my father to get help. My dad saved a boy in the snow and this was aired world wide and when the boy got better my dad made him a hand craft boat with his hands and that’s how it became a heart worming story. Now my dad needs this chance this is his one chance to keep himslf alive I need some funds to get this kind of help for him and find my family and be in my life and when i find the rest of our family and find my sister and brother I can then bring them on the intervention show and we can be a family. All of us together is his only chance!
