Sometimes I forget I used to make game reviews when I was young. They were obviously terrible, but if you want to see a little glimpse into the roots of the Angry Video Game Nerd, here it is.
when I came to the cinemassacre main page i shit my pants cos i thought there was a new AVGN episode, but hey we all love to see your childhood videos, so more of these please
Hey, thanks for sharing James…cool to see a window into the past of a young AVGN in the making. And your saying “cacapoo” reminds me of one of kids from Kindergarten Cop.
I never recorded any video of game playing back in the day, but a while ago I found some old audio tapes where my younger brothers and I had recorded us playing some Gameboy, NES and SNES games. Oddly enough the sound quality came out decent when I transferred it to my computer and there are a few good parts of us heckling our youngest brother for using a Game Genie to beat SMB 2.
Good stuff to bring out at family gatherings…ha! ^_^
I was too lazy to set up a livefyre thing to comment because I apparently couldn’t use the regular log in method with this username to leave comments earlier for a few weeks. Hope this or both ways to comment stay for the future.
Anyways, seeing the Simon’s Quest box as well as remembering the october castlevania marathon two years ago has me hyped for Monster Madness 5 and everything else Halloween related coming next month. I really need to order a few monster madness/cinemassacre t-shirts.
Hey James, have you watched Ed, Edd and Eddy? I’m so excited about the new Monster Madness, I feel like Ed in one of the episodes where he was watching a horror marathon. I must see these cartoons again!
LOL. Already hating Simon’s Quest at such a young age, beautiful. It’s good to know that that game didn’t appeal to any age category.
Also, may I make mention of this HELLA annoying Scream 4 ad that comes up lately James? It takes up my entire screen and lags the shit out of my computer. Every single time I refresh it does it. What’s the deal?
I know you are just kidding but there are many things wrong with that statement. Okay, first of all, tampons are not made of metal, and therefore they cannot rust. Secondly, when you say analfist a cactus, what do you mean? You will shove your fist up a cactus’s ass? Cacti don’t have asses. If you mean you would rather anal fist yourself with a cactus, then that really isn’t fisting; unless the cactus is on your fist. Third, crab dick. Really? Are you kidding around or are you really that stupid. Some crabs do have penises, but they are (mostly) too small to be sucked on. If you mean crab dick, as in a dick infested with the STD, “Crabs”, then that is fucking gross. Finally, I notice a lot of spelling, grammar, and punctuation issues.
Next time you want to troll or make a “funny” comment, try to make what you are writing make sense.
It’s amazing when you can revisit something that was difficult as a child and realize how it wasn’t very hard at all. Something to be said for a fully developed brain with adult reflexes and cognitive ability I guess. For me as a kid with my fat gray Game Boy, I thought Super Mario Land was hard as hell. Now I can pretty much walk right through it without much practice.
LoL I noticed how you just could NOT let that damn bat live.
I have an old tape FULL of my NES footage, I keep slacking on getting it digitally converted, I’m assuming I need an S-video cord. The tape itself is so old, I used to record transformers episodes on it back in ’84.
I know there’s a bit of a snag about what’s being said, between “caca poo” and “cockaphooie”. I don’t mean to make it more twisted, but it reminded me of “cacafoony” from waaaaaaaaay back when.
HA HA HA whell with this awesome gem as a game i have lost my words to when i have first play this, one of the few very good old school castlevania games thry to remember that old fellah.
That was as funny as it was strangely adorable and bizarre! Nice to see some more old footage. I also second that “Dirty Cockapoo” needs to be in a upcoming AVGN. Heh.
I like how you couldn’t resist fiddling about with the whip throughout the whole video because I find myself doing the exact same thing every time I fire up Super Castlevania 4.
September 26, 2011 at 1:55 am
Haha awesome!!
September 26, 2011 at 1:56 am
Awww, weren’t you such a cute kid.
Wait, this was posted by Mofo Mike. *gasp* AVGN started with Mike??? Everything was a lie!
September 26, 2011 at 1:56 am
I was terrible at this game at that age. Its amazing to know that James and I had a similar childhood.
September 26, 2011 at 3:25 am
At 1:23, did you say “You dirty Cockapoo”?
March 13, 2013 at 7:29 pm
now he says cockadookie. Big Improvement!
September 26, 2011 at 5:38 am
Heh, maybe the filthy mouth wasn’t an invented character trait for the nerd after all.
September 26, 2011 at 6:21 am
Haha, you sucked at the game pretty badly
I did too at that age.
September 26, 2011 at 6:41 am
Heh, the first few seconds are totally Silent Hill.
At least we know now that you had a thing for giving games feces-synonyms even when you were young
September 26, 2011 at 7:21 am

Oh well, Cockapoo will do.
September 26, 2011 at 11:34 am

September 26, 2011 at 12:17 pm
@Reputator
Well basically what that means is that he uploaded the video for me. He helps a lot with that stuff.
September 26, 2011 at 12:28 pm

That first “darn it” just made me laugh. You would never use that word in a video now.
September 26, 2011 at 3:50 pm

This video sucks rusty tampons, not nearly enough swearing. James I’d rather analfist a Cactus than watch this vile piece of crab dick again.

September 26, 2011 at 4:53 pm
So, it’s decided. “Dirty Cockapoo” needs to make an appearance in the next Nerd vid.
September 26, 2011 at 5:06 pm
Funny thing is, kids are making video Let’s Plays that are almost identical to this 19 years later.
September 26, 2011 at 5:31 pm

It’s “cockaphooie”, and yes, it would be nice if it made a comeback.
September 26, 2011 at 7:53 pm

September 26, 2011 at 11:30 pm

September 27, 2011 at 1:39 am

September 27, 2011 at 2:17 am
HAHAHA! That was hilarious!
September 27, 2011 at 4:47 am
Wow, even back in 1992 you could make a better Let’s Play than that hack The Nostalgia Critic. ZING!
September 27, 2011 at 8:23 am

Great. I like old footage like that.
October 5, 2011 at 12:41 am

October 12, 2011 at 3:16 pm
Hahaha, I love how even though the swears are held back, you can still tell it’s James in the way he talks.
October 24, 2011 at 2:28 pm
Castlevania Crap xD
November 3, 2011 at 12:01 am
Maybe because I’m a girl, but I find this kind of adorable.
If the Ghost of Christmas Past ever visits the Nerd again, James has some footage to use for the Nerd’s childhood
I second the request for the “Dirty Cockapoo”swear making a comeback in an AVGN video, lol
November 30, 2011 at 6:18 pm
I like how you couldn’t resist fiddling about with the whip throughout the whole video because I find myself doing the exact same thing every time I fire up Super Castlevania 4.
November 30, 2011 at 7:23 pm
this reminds me when i tried to do that
December 18, 2011 at 1:59 pm
This just proves you were born to be AVGN!
December 22, 2011 at 4:17 am
Reminds me of me when I was a kid. “Nobody hits me and gets away with it!”, pro.
January 15, 2012 at 5:16 pm
the jibberish and message at the end. so good
January 19, 2012 at 11:51 pm
god this is like the videos I make NOW! Best left to the pros. Funny hearing the smaller Nerdling voice in this one.

March 24, 2012 at 9:48 pm
dirty cockapoo!!!
April 2, 2012 at 8:42 pm
14 years later, the swearing of angry begins
August 6, 2012 at 9:25 pm
It’s funny how your reviews as an 11/12 year old on VHS are better than my reviews as a 14 year old on YouTube!
August 30, 2012 at 8:43 am
Destiny, it seems if you want to do something you actually can get there some day, on some scale even if it isn’t a huge hit as AVGN is.
January 15, 2013 at 2:21 am
Funny, I used to display my Resident evil 1 and 2 boxes on Halloween as a kid.
