Hey, I actually recognize one of these glitches for a change – specifically, the bouncing the key off your head trick. I used to do that all the time for shits n’ giggles.
I know the key and the vegetable trick work on the GBA version of the game, too. While I played Mario World enough times to fill up my score screen to the max, I feel like I’ve played Mario 2 enough times to end up doing the same… except I’d end up turning off my game out of frustration a good number of times so filling my score board was out of the question.
I remember some of those. I actually found a few myself.
There’s a way to bypass the cave in World 1-2. When you get the magic carpet, ride it to the bottom of the screen just low enough so that your character’s legs aren’t visible and then continue pressing right. Doing so will speed up the character’s movement until they move up. If you time it just right, you should have just enough time to jump on the hill above the cave entrance and skip it altogether. This trick works best with Luigi.
If you go into the subspace while you have the Starman, Once in, wait until the flashing begins to slow down and exit the subspace. If you’ve timed it right, the subspace music will play instead of the standard music.
There are more but they were either posted on the video or they escape me at the moment. If I remember I will post them.
I remember discovering that ladder trick way back when. I use to spend hours trying to delete sections to see how much I could get. There were a couple of other structures that worked on in the game too.
Another thing I liked to do with blocks was seal myself inside of doors. There was really no purpose since it was often the way to exit the levels anyway, but I just liked the idea of sealing the door off before I used it.
I really miss the NES era of gaming, before the internet. Finding secrets and glitches really added a whole new element to games. As sad as it may sound, it was a very accomplished feeling to pull off tricks. If it wasnt in nintendo power, or I didnt accidentally discover it, my only other source was from hear-say at school. Of course, once Id hear about a new trick, Id stop paying attention in class for the rest of the day, then go home and not do my homework so I could fuck around with whatever game I had a new trick for.
The internet, it takes all the fun and mystery out of gaming anymore. Im sure being an adult doesnt help either, but regardless, anymore its just pop in a game and play through it once or twice the way its meant to be played. Only replay really offered is if there is some kind of online play, or if it happens to be a more arcade style game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRo6uTwApoE watch this tool assisted speed run to see the glitches Mike talked about and a WHOLE lot more! For more awesome action go to tasvideos.org the megaman/rockman 1 run is just one constant glitch!
I remember the key and the block ones. Also in one of the last worlds a bob-bomb sent me someway over the screen and I could do nothing so I had to reset.
Hey Mike, I hope you read these comments. I would really appreciate it if you guys consider some of the game requests from the fans. Some guy mentioned Beetlejuice which would be a good review. Its from crappy LJN. And I would like a review on Robodemons and Raid 2020 if possible. Think about it. Thanks.
wow thats some pretty crazy glitches! I love those glitches! Its amazing how these old games have these crazy random glitches,so crazy! You awesome Motherfucker Mike, hope the AVGN movie is goin well with the Nerd, good luck!
There’s a pretty interesting trick using the potions. When you get one, collect enough cherries to bring up the star. Throw the potion and grab the star. Step into the door and let the timer run out with the star still active, but about to expire. Not sure the timing on it, but if done correctly, when you return to the main world, you’ll be using the dimension door music instead of the level music for that particular screen. This stops when you enter another section where the music changes and might change when you switch screens (IE: climbing a vine).
Mike, I don’t know if this is just in my computer, but in the intro when you talk to the camera it has a very red/yellow light. Is it the camera or just my computer?
Once again, great glitches, I would love to see if anyone actually deletes the whole ladder!
Princess was the only character I would use. She could float. The others sucked. Especially Luigi, but ESPECIALLY Toad. And Mario was just as worthless.
Nice vid, MFM. I got a little bored at first because I knew all those tricks except the last one…but right as it caught my attention the video ended abruptly. No big deal, but I had to go back and watch the end a few times to see what had happened.
You also forgot the trick where you stick a vegetable up Wart’s ass which does double damage if I remember correctly. ^_^
This is not REALLY too much of a glitch as much as it is character representation… but What you do is you select Toad for world 3-1…Then After entering the door your encountered with Cloud Platforms… Jump DOWN…yes, You will notice its quite a big drop for a bottomeless pit, You will want to center yourself to land on a small island with a door, Enter this door and you will encounter MANY plants, You will want to pick the one that holds a Potion…Get as many Plants on screen, THEN go in the door and have Toad pick up as many as you can. (Hes Fast at it) then when you leave sub space via door or time up… Go out the Left most door then re-enter and repeate.. For any Level you can only collect coin(s) twice. After the 2nd time around, Get the potion again and take it to the pipe and Warp to 5-1, get the coins at the beginning part of this level twice and beat Birdo…then your Coins amt is replaced with a weird character….. I guess the game dosent displayer higher than 9-10 coins very well let alone about 25!
This, I thought, was a great game glitch review. And I went and tried the double jump thing with Luigi and that actually works though out the game on multiple enemies. Thanks for the glitch and I just thought you’d like to know about that.
Hey Mike, there’s also a glitch when you manage to get a star in the Subspace area (Level 1-3 works fine) When you get back in the level and the star runs out, There’s still the Mario 1 song playing ! Something like it I’m not sure it’s been a while.
You can also destroy doors with mushroom blocks. Destroying the top is by far the easiest, and destroying both parts is almost impossible. A half destroyed will still work, but once both parts are destroyed, you can’t go in, making it possible to get STUCK forever.
Nice 🙂 Only if you’d posted this earlier, sometime late August, I got tired of being the only one I know who hasn’t beaten this game, so I did a marathon of it. I’m not really fond of it, hence the reason I never beat it before.
You forgot a trick. if you go to the cave in the first level and go left to the shyguy pick it up and make sure you have three hearts and two filled. if you jump as the princess and throw the shyguy mid air. when you land you’ll get hit and the shyguy will go through the floor!
I was like, “Cool, neat, yeah,” watching this until you did the bomb and POW block. Then I burst out laughing when you said, “FUCK!” and flew off the screen.
I was on Youtube yesterday watching some of the older game glitch episodes but I didn’t come across the Super Mario 2 video there. Did you guys not post this one to Youtube yet?
On a side note, watching this totally makes me want to boot up Mario All-Stars and do some serious damage!
I’ve known about that ladder trick for ages, I just used it as a step ladder. But, I’ll tell you (and just you MF’er) that you can do that glitch just about anywhere. You can glitch those blocks in just about anything I thought, not everything everything, but definitely any ladder anywhere.

When I was a kid I would often destroy the ladders like that. I never thought to erase all of them, though. I’d really like to see that.
September 1, 2011 at 6:52 pm
Cool! And Long live AVGN!
September 1, 2011 at 6:55 pm
i always found the princess to be the strongest character in SMB2 (at least for my style of play).
but for all of the SMB games, #2 was my least favorite.
random movie quote: “who does number 2 work for?!?”
September 1, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Princess is by far the best character.

That last trick with the POW block and bomb plant can also be done on the very first level with the logs on the waterfall and a pow block.
You grab the block, jump on a log when it’s emerging to the top
right when it reaches the peak throw the block and you’ll fly off the screen.
September 18, 2011 at 11:31 pm
Why do you call yourself Motherfucker Mike? That sounds really, really stupid.
