Always great to see a new AVGN!
August 26, 2011 at 3:07 pm
NICE!
August 26, 2011 at 3:08 pm
second comment =D
havent watched it yet
August 26, 2011 at 3:08 pm
Just started the video.
August 26, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Wow! Great find! Congratulations!
August 26, 2011 at 3:10 pm
Wow thanks for the fast upload.
I did not expected it so soon after James panel at PAX. this is very kind
August 26, 2011 at 3:11 pm
Oh, I spoke too soon.
August 26, 2011 at 3:16 pm
I go to home page to find a new video, it’s not even my birthday! : DDDDD
August 26, 2011 at 3:18 pm
How much I wish this was a part of my collection.
August 26, 2011 at 3:18 pm
God the NES punk can’t act is way out of a paper bag.
August 26, 2011 at 3:23 pm
Oh man, didn’t expect a new episode so soon and it is one of your best to date!
Just to clarify, which cartridge do you own James? The gold or the regular one?
August 26, 2011 at 3:24 pm
pat definitely owns the grey cart. does he also own the gold cart? or did you happen to get the gold one?
August 26, 2011 at 3:26 pm
D-D-Did you really destroy them?
August 26, 2011 at 3:27 pm
Oh my gosh the ending gave me a heart attack! Nice job!
August 26, 2011 at 3:27 pm
Very Very Nice episode!
August 26, 2011 at 3:28 pm
For the love of god please tell both of those carts are ok and in a sealed glass box placed on a satin pillow on a pedestal where they belong.
August 26, 2011 at 3:31 pm
Awesome episode. Of course I knew the originals were okay, but you did a great job making it look like it was real. Of course that’s one less Gold Zelda game out there…
August 26, 2011 at 3:32 pm
James,man i fucking love you .
I have watched all of your videos and you are fucking god .
You never dissapoint us .
August 26, 2011 at 3:33 pm
As a collector, I have to voice how happy I am for James. I see his collection and strive for one as impressive as his and I enjoyed the video he posted of his NES games. He said in the video that there were just some games he would never be able to own and now he is one HUGE step closer to actually being able to achieve that goal.
August 26, 2011 at 3:34 pm
I about cried when you smashed those… what sort of film trickery did you use to fake it?
August 26, 2011 at 3:35 pm
Instant classic, Pat was awesome, wondering if he will exist in the AVGN universe for film? I would move to that neighborhood any day : )
August 26, 2011 at 3:36 pm
Amazing stuff as usual. lol “Don’t even LOOK at it”
August 26, 2011 at 3:38 pm
wow dude you tricked me i relly thought you broke those wonderfully rare games i envy you…..
August 26, 2011 at 3:38 pm
Haha…destruction!
August 26, 2011 at 3:45 pm
YES!!
August 26, 2011 at 3:46 pm
Amazing, I was laughing through the whole thing!
But what did James destroy, since it wasn’t the real game?
August 26, 2011 at 3:47 pm
When I saw the hammer come out I nearly shit my pants. And when you smashed the games I did shit my pants.
August 26, 2011 at 3:49 pm
The battery on the board was a dead giveaway that you smashed a Zelda cartridge. NWC is a full-sized board, with no battery.
August 26, 2011 at 3:50 pm
My fucking jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the games being hammered into pieces.. especially since they’re worth like $11000.. I wonder if the person who sold you the gold cart knows they’re retarded..
August 26, 2011 at 3:51 pm
Haha! Nice! I seriously almost threw up. Thanks for the assurance at the end!
August 26, 2011 at 3:51 pm
I’m curious too, who actually owns the gold cart? Great job making the destruction look real btw!
August 26, 2011 at 3:52 pm
Great episode. Nice crossover.
August 26, 2011 at 3:53 pm
Here I was, watching old AVGN episodes, when suddenly there was a wonderful golden icon drawing me in. After watching it, I was very impressed with how EPIC the contest for these rare games becomes. I can’t wait to see the movie, and another episode as soon as possible!. Also it would be good if you could find a working jaguar cd-i, as it needs a 3rd shot with some decent games. (If they exists). I find you to be a GREAT teacher in the art of forgotten video game history, and alot of my favorite episodes are the ones that talk about a console on a whole, or information about the console wars, which are still going on today.
Good luck again with the movie, James!
August 26, 2011 at 3:55 pm
That was probably one of the best episodes so far! I so fucking loved it!
So, James, who was the actual owner of the golden NWC? Are they both (grey and golden) belong to Pat?
August 26, 2011 at 3:59 pm
When I saw in the comments that the games were “destroyed,” I instantly knew that he was going to destroy a LoZ 2 cart. Why would he actually destroy 15 grand? Still a great episode, though.
August 26, 2011 at 4:12 pm
booo you rewrote history – was hoping this would continue from the gameshow-games vid/pats video where nerd bought it in a garage sale..
August 26, 2011 at 4:17 pm
Everyone wants to know the real story lol. Did you really get that off of Ebay?
August 26, 2011 at 4:17 pm
Wow, when you hit the games with the hammer you gave me a freaking heart attack, I actually yelled out in shock. I should’ve known it was fake, but man did it make me jump!
By the way, this was hands down on of the best episodes you’ve done in such a long time. GREAT job!
August 26, 2011 at 4:22 pm
If you don’t play the game then how would you know if it works or if you really have the real game and not some facsimile just like you yourself created?
The world’s rarest cars cost millions & they still get their engines started at least.
August 26, 2011 at 4:23 pm
@thetruetombo
he DOES have a working jaguar cd, if you bought the Vol 4 DVD and watched the bonus features you would know this :p
August 26, 2011 at 4:33 pm
I almost got a bit annoyed at the end, but luckily you didn’t smash the real deal :p .. Tho, I’m curious too, who’s got the gold one?
August 26, 2011 at 4:34 pm
what is the real story behind getting these btw?
both pat and avgn reviews were awesome!
August 26, 2011 at 4:39 pm
Pat and James……….epic love both of you guys and i know pat had a grey cart but is the gold cart really real?? great vid james ive seen all of them and this is prob the best….next to atari porno
August 26, 2011 at 4:45 pm
Awesome video
You gotta tell us tho James, who does the Gold cart belong too?
August 26, 2011 at 4:45 pm
wow, um this video, was okay, better than Kid Kool
August 26, 2011 at 4:46 pm
i thought you had gone crazy there for a minute when you destroyed the games! i was relieved when i saw you didnt really do it in the credits. i mean who breaks such valuable games? just one of those could get me through the rest cf college and a trip to see my gf
August 26, 2011 at 4:51 pm
This episode was full of AWESOME. I prefer the episode where we see more the nerd than the television screen.
August 26, 2011 at 4:52 pm
Funny, informative and epic! The fuckin’ Nerd always delivers!
August 26, 2011 at 4:53 pm
A friend of mine owns a white NWC. He placed first at a regional NWC competition here in Detroit. He keeps it in a safe in his house.
August 26, 2011 at 4:55 pm
Why you can’t play the ORIGINAL NWC 1990 ?
P.S Awesome episode
August 26, 2011 at 5:07 pm
James if you see this, could you plleeeaaase just do a very quick unscripted video clearing up this video? Who owns the gold cart?!
August 26, 2011 at 5:09 pm
Legend of Zelda ? Legend of my ass !
That line killed me xD
Really great episode, well written, well done. I had never heard of the NWC before . The video was interesting on a cultural side, and entertaining…. on a nerdy side i guess.
Great job !
PS : What is the real story behind the scenes ? Does Pat own both of the cartridges ? Do you own both ? Or do you each own one ?
Did you really got them by pure luck on a cheap ebay set ?
I suppose you smashed fake ones, am i right ?
August 26, 2011 at 5:10 pm
If someone had really destroyed those copies in my presence i’d murder someone.
August 26, 2011 at 5:14 pm
I actually got kind of bored and had to fast forward.
I’m just curious if you really got it in an Ebay auction like that? Almost feels like stealing when it’s worth so much – but damn, that’s crazy to have happen.
August 26, 2011 at 5:16 pm
How could you destroy those games! What in the holy mother of fuck is wrong with you?!
August 26, 2011 at 5:17 pm
That was a great reaction to the actual game. “Wait this is just SMB?”..awesome.
August 26, 2011 at 5:22 pm
Ya james please do a video where you describe whos it is and exactly how you got it, as well as how much. Im very interested!
August 26, 2011 at 5:25 pm
The episode was ok . So the nwc is just a rehash of any 3 randomly chosen games. That is lame. 3 games, 1 level each lol. I suppose only the most devout collector will understand the importance of nwc. Keep the nerd episodes coming James.
August 26, 2011 at 5:27 pm
Haven’t watched it yet, but I’m impressed you were able to get hold of this game and, judging by your comments on the “donate money” video (sorry, still haven’t got around to adding to my initial $10 payment, will surely do so in the next couple of days), this is going to be a good review. I look forward to watching it as soon as I’ve finished watching Summerslam from earlier this month.
August 26, 2011 at 5:27 pm
Great video, though light on the review side it was certainly funny. The end did feel a little anti climatic though, I was hoping for more from Pat other than just choking you, but hey it was an entertaining video none the less.
I too am interested in the BTS stuff – do you own the real carts at all? How did you make fake ones for the video? Would love to hear!
August 26, 2011 at 5:29 pm
The glowing golden shimmering light reflecting from the game + the epic music + gasp from the AVGN = best moment in recent (or all time) nerd history. I honestly wasn’t expecting Pat to pull the golden cartridge out (I knew earlier he had the gray version at least). Great use of lighting/editing to emphasize how rare/nerdy game collecting can get from the perspective of two hardcore retro gamers.
August 26, 2011 at 5:29 pm
Lol I can’t believe you didn’t reference ‘London After Midnight.’
Still though, that was a very well put together and great episode.
August 26, 2011 at 5:42 pm
I think this episode & the game glitches are the best episodes.
Oh yeah and i think you should do a behind the scenes for this explaining who owns the game what game did you really smash etc, etc.
Anyways an awesome video , especially when i wasn’t expecting much bicouse of the movie coming out and all that .
Keep up the good work, James! And Pat too . He should be in your videos more often .
August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm
Who ever thinks they really destroyed those games are mentally retarded.
August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm
I highly enjoyed this episode. When AVGN was smashing the shit out of those carts, I was like “ohh shit”. I’d lose my mind.
I recall when I was fighting the Ruby weapon in FFVII. I had been fighting the thing for about an hour or longer – brutal. My friends wanted to leave, and not watch any more, so my one buddy walks up to the PS1, and fucking pushes the power button. Needless to say I lost my mind. They cleared out pretty fast. I went to his house, commandeered his t.v., and forced him to watch me defeat Ruby weapon as punishment. ..assholes.
August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm
GREAT VIDEO!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm
This is so awesome. You went like “I need someone who is as obsessed with games as I am.” As soon as you said “…especially with the NES” I was like “PAT!!?!?!!”
=D
friggin sweet! Now on with the video, I’m so excited to see the game, I’m about to shit my fuck
August 26, 2011 at 5:47 pm
I believe you gave my girlfriend a heartattack there. Me too…
Curious to know how you got those games, as you said, it’s pretty much the Holy Grail.
August 26, 2011 at 5:48 pm
Omg! One of the best episodes ever! I laughed so hard, the Nerd’s reaction is priceless!
Fucking AMAZING episode! Loved Pat’s part in it. Great job guys!
August 26, 2011 at 5:48 pm
Quote: How could you destroy those games! What in the holy mother of fuck is wrong with you?!
——————-
Are you retarded? He did not really destroy them you dumb ass.
August 26, 2011 at 5:52 pm
Oh my God! This episode is just great!
August 26, 2011 at 5:53 pm
If you watch through the credits, there is a shot of them each holding an original copy. Nerd holding grey, Punk holding gold. This is probably in there to show us who owns what. And for the other idiots who think they would destroy the real thing.
August 26, 2011 at 5:55 pm
That was brilliant! Definitely one of the best scripted, acted and directed AVGN episodes.
August 26, 2011 at 5:56 pm
When those cartridges got smashed my jaw dropped for a full minute. I heard about this game before and its extreme rarity and never fully understood what it was. This was a very entertaining (and at least in terms of gaming) educational episode. Thank god you didn’t destroy real ones.
Who owns those two anyway? The ending made it look like Pat owns the golden one and you the grey one. I would love to see a video of you both telling us how you got them
In any case, great episode!
August 26, 2011 at 6:03 pm
…………….
So much to cutting back on episode quality while you’re working on the movie.
This might be my new favorite AVGN episode.
The scene where you were both just staring at the gold cartridge? Or where you both have the idea “We are battling this out like men”? Instant classic.
And when the nerd came through, realizing that those games are actually just overpriced pieces of shit?
Man, this is just the best thing ever.
How did you do the scene with the smashed cartridges? You can’t possibly have hammered them… can you? Were those just placebos?
You two put a HUGE smile on mah face this evening!
<3
August 26, 2011 at 6:05 pm
As far as ownership of the carts goes, I know Pat owns at least the gray cart. Not sure about the gold one.
August 26, 2011 at 6:11 pm
Guys, I’m pretty sure James only owns the reproduction cart.
A few days back I saw the video where Pat and James play some NES games in James’ basement. Well, he kind of gave a teaser for this episode and I checked wether he owns the grey cart or not. (http://cinemassacre.com/2004/05/05/nes-collection/)
There it still says that he only owns the blue copy, so I guess Pat owns both of them.
Wikipedia only tells about Pat owning one copy of the game though, but that might be wrong.
August 26, 2011 at 6:12 pm
:O The gold. It’s beautiful.
10:39- OMFG, that was so funny.
15:30- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
16:46- Oh, thank god.
August 26, 2011 at 6:12 pm
I’d still like to know how what cartridge you destroyed.
Seems kind of hard to fake with the time switches on the cart itself.
August 26, 2011 at 6:13 pm
@katakis – I just tweeted at Pat about it, maybe he can clear it up for us
August 26, 2011 at 6:22 pm
Im almost 100% that the cartridges where just fake replicas. I mean, he whould just have needed to tear the sitcker off a Zelda 2 and and cut out the NWC logo from a piece of paper. There is no way he whould ever have destroyed a 20k cartridge.
August 26, 2011 at 6:22 pm
Man that guy was a douche, though anyway it was nice that you smashed them even though they were fakes the lot of them. Expected something better but oh well I am sure it is due to you being busy with the movie which I am looking forward to.
August 26, 2011 at 6:25 pm
Laughed my ass off.. Very funny.
August 26, 2011 at 6:25 pm
Look you idiots. JAMES HAS THE COPIES! HE JUST USED FAKE ONES TO DESTROY!
August 26, 2011 at 6:26 pm
haha great episode James
My heart stopped when the hammer was brought out.
By the way this episode made it on Wikipedia!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_World_Championships
August 26, 2011 at 6:29 pm
So, James, which one of them was your game? D:
August 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm
nice that you saved the games at the end! I had a bad moment where you took the hammer out
August 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm
Celstio:
Of course he didn’t destroy the cartridges. Apparently you didn’t even watch the end of the video.
August 26, 2011 at 6:32 pm
Yeah you really need those paypal donations when you own a Nintendo World Championship Cartridge. That is fucked up James, you have plenty of money yet you are asking people to give you money like you can’t afford to make the movie yourself. You are getting people to give you money to make the movie which you will make money off of. James that is really fucked up. I know everybody will flame me for saying this, but you know it’s true.
August 26, 2011 at 6:35 pm
btw if you read the wikipedia article there is a company that sells replicas of NWC both gold and grey with dip switches I linked in my original post.
They could have used that as the props
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_World_Championships
scroll down you will see retrousb makes duplicates of the gold and grey carts
August 26, 2011 at 6:46 pm
Well, I skipped about 85% of that episode.
Enough with the damn skits. Good god; I want to see game reviews.
August 26, 2011 at 6:47 pm
How come James lost this unique opportunity to make some kind of spoof of “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”? It was all there. He could have used “The Ecstasy Of Gold” music by Ennio Morricone when they first see the cartridge and he could have done extreme close-ups shots just like Sergio Leone when directing the epic battle for the “golden cartridge”, in true west style. :/
Anyway, still it is a nice episode but I think it would have been way better if he did it this other way.
August 26, 2011 at 6:49 pm
Whew! James, for a minute, you really had me going there.
So, which one of you gets each of the cartridges? The gold one is gorgeous.
A different video, but still good. Loved it when both were jumping like crazies.
August 26, 2011 at 6:56 pm
@katakis1
But do we know when James updated his list? I mean, with all the stuff he’s doing, I figured the last thing he’d worry about is updating his collection list. Plus, seems like this episode was about him getting the cart. No point in showing off the repro cart now.
Either James owns it, or Pat owns it.
August 26, 2011 at 6:56 pm
Funny!!!
I liked the part where you and Pat had the day dreams, they seemed to fit each of your guy’s style!!!
August 26, 2011 at 7:00 pm
James raises a good point in this video, and for that reason I fuckin hate the collectors who just add to their collection and don’t even play the games driving the price up for me. I know Splatterhouse 2 and 3 are semirare genesis games and I wanna play them but the fucking cock tickler collectors drive up the fuckin prices on em so I have to emulate.
August 26, 2011 at 7:03 pm
That was shockingly hilarious. When you grabbed that hammer I thought you were going to kill Pat, then I freaked when you smashed the games. Nice fake-out on us there. That is stupid those games cost so much when you can get the full versions for cheap on separate cartridges that would never even amount to the total cost of the single rare copy. Surprised the new Nerd is out so early. Does this mean we’ll have another for September real soon, or are we changing time releases?
August 26, 2011 at 7:13 pm
Great writing and directing in this episode. You had me clenching my teeth for a moment there. If you can get me on the edge of my seat like that, it’s a good sign for the AVGN movie.
August 26, 2011 at 7:16 pm
That was great! One of the best AVGN episodes to date. When you smashed the NWC carts I practically pissed myself. The whole video reminded me when I was a kid and did trades with friends. It’s like the times when you traded with a friend but then realized you got screwed over and traded back. Thanks for the nostalgia in more than one way!!!
August 26, 2011 at 7:17 pm
There should totally be an episode where the Nerd and Punk duke it out. xD
This is one of the best episodes yet.
August 26, 2011 at 7:20 pm
that. was. EPIC!!!
my favourite AVGN episode at the moment, good job pat & james!!!
must have taken you days to make this whole video!!!
August 26, 2011 at 7:23 pm
nerd i have my own rare game a test copy of EARTHBOUND a.k.a mother 1 weeeeeeeeee.
August 26, 2011 at 7:32 pm
OMG! who owns this little piece of heaven, is it the nerd? or is it pat? I hope it’s from james, he needs one of these
August 26, 2011 at 7:32 pm
Friends, help, what music track plays in the beginning of the episode?
August 26, 2011 at 7:42 pm
How to become rich
1. Acquire 100 copies of legend of zelda
2. Remove all of the labels
3. Print out the nintendo world championship logo and glue it on
4. Sell them under fake identity
5. Profit
August 26, 2011 at 7:45 pm
did you really dis brake tha gold cartrage?
August 26, 2011 at 7:49 pm
I literally screamed when The Nerd broke those cartages.
Thank god they’re really in on piece.
August 26, 2011 at 7:52 pm
I wonder who owns the Gold Cartridge, if it’s an actual gold cartridge.
August 26, 2011 at 7:54 pm
Many people will try to copy this sucker over there and sell it to some poor geeks that trying desperately to find one,as we speak now imagine what would hapen on ebay.
August 26, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Yeah, you knew you had to show the real ones after the credits, or else get 15,000 emails asking about it.
August 26, 2011 at 8:04 pm
wow you (fake) broke the games not knowing if they were really different.
August 26, 2011 at 8:08 pm
great…just what we need……somebody taking time from our beloved nerd.
August 26, 2011 at 8:12 pm
awesome dude! i need to get my own nes collection….. emulators suck
August 26, 2011 at 8:12 pm
why the fucl would he do that (smash game)
August 26, 2011 at 8:15 pm
Brilliant! I can’t stop laughing!
August 26, 2011 at 8:32 pm
I would love to have one of those copies (the one he smashed) just for display. Is it just a zelda catridge cut up?
August 26, 2011 at 8:35 pm
Yet again, another spectacular video! I started watching AVGN almost 5 years ago and I have been hooked ever since. Cinemassacre is just plain awesome! You shared your passion with all of your fans and it is a true inspiration to us all.
August 26, 2011 at 8:58 pm
good stuff nerd, thanks!
August 26, 2011 at 9:12 pm
It was good, but there is something awkward on the acting with The Nerd and the other guy sharing the same space. I feel the interaction works better with other people and characters in general (Mike Matei, the other guy who plays the ninja and the game glitch gremlin, the nostalgia critic, even the robot or the mario 3 possessed cartridge). Leave the NES Punk to other kind of videos.
Also, that “deep nerd voice” again…I don’t like it.
I think these are issues you should consider when filming the movie.
August 26, 2011 at 9:18 pm
I’m basically here just to tell you how much I appreciate all the things you do for the old school gaming community James/Jim.
It is always a joy watching you whether it is as the AVGN, reviewing movies, makng top tens or your pure kindhearted self.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and wish you would go on forever with all of these things.
I salute you!
August 26, 2011 at 9:23 pm
c’mon!! tell us how u got those cartriges! no way u destroyed them
August 26, 2011 at 9:27 pm
If I were a guessing man, I’d say they got it by both chipping in for it. Pat would keep it, but he would have to help James make the video.
Pat gets the game, James get a paycheck.
August 26, 2011 at 9:45 pm
I can’t believe you got your hands on a gold NWC 1990 cart! That is amazing. I used to dream about it when I was a kid (for some reason I thought it was a collection of every game, hey, I was 7)
Did some guy really just sell it to you on ebay by accident? there are only, like, 25 of those right? How much is it actually worth? That’s amazing.
August 26, 2011 at 9:51 pm
There’s no way you destroyed, the real cartridges. That is obvious.
