  • SBoyShadow

    August 26, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Oh man, didn’t expect a new episode so soon and it is one of your best to date!
Just to clarify, which cartridge do you own James? The gold or the regular one?

  • BKopp

    August 26, 2011 at 3:24 pm

pat definitely owns the grey cart. does he also own the gold cart? or did you happen to get the gold one?

    • Stainabletie449

      March 12, 2014 at 10:17 am

He dose own the gold cart

  • Hwoarang97

    August 26, 2011 at 3:26 pm

    D-D-Did you really destroy them?

  • August 26, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Oh my gosh the ending gave me a heart attack! Nice job!

  • homemacai

    August 26, 2011 at 3:27 pm

    Very Very Nice episode!

  • August 26, 2011 at 3:28 pm

For the love of god please tell both of those carts are ok and in a sealed glass box placed on a satin pillow on a pedestal where they belong.

  • Jigglysaint

    August 26, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Awesome episode. Of course I knew the originals were okay, but you did a great job making it look like it was real. Of course that’s one less Gold Zelda game out there…

  • Darda

    August 26, 2011 at 3:32 pm

    James,man i fucking love you .

I have watched all of your videos and you are fucking god .

    You never dissapoint us .

  • calibur_3d

    August 26, 2011 at 3:33 pm

As a collector, I have to voice how happy I am for James. I see his collection and strive for one as impressive as his and I enjoyed the video he posted of his NES games. He said in the video that there were just some games he would never be able to own and now he is one HUGE step closer to actually being able to achieve that goal.

  • Shafable

    August 26, 2011 at 3:34 pm

I about cried when you smashed those… what sort of film trickery did you use to fake it?

  • Blitzcracker

    August 26, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Instant classic, Pat was awesome, wondering if he will exist in the AVGN universe for film? I would move to that neighborhood any day : )

  • GenesisNerd

    August 26, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Amazing stuff as usual. lol “Don’t even LOOK at it”

  • August 26, 2011 at 3:38 pm

wow dude you tricked me i relly thought you broke those wonderfully rare games i envy you…..

  • August 26, 2011 at 3:38 pm

    Haha…destruction!

  • Seimann

    August 26, 2011 at 3:45 pm

    YES!!

  • August 26, 2011 at 3:46 pm

Amazing, I was laughing through the whole thing!

But what did James destroy, since it wasn’t the real game?

  • AssKickerTom

    August 26, 2011 at 3:47 pm

When I saw the hammer come out I nearly shit my pants. And when you smashed the games I did shit my pants.

  • August 26, 2011 at 3:49 pm

The battery on the board was a dead giveaway that you smashed a Zelda cartridge. NWC is a full-sized board, with no battery.

  • risk

    August 26, 2011 at 3:50 pm

My fucking jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the games being hammered into pieces.. especially since they’re worth like $11000.. I wonder if the person who sold you the gold cart knows they’re retarded..

  • Sammit

    August 26, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Haha! Nice! I seriously almost threw up. Thanks for the assurance at the end!

  • JamesRolfe

    August 26, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I’m curious too, who actually owns the gold cart? Great job making the destruction look real btw!

  • The Kaleidoscopic God

    August 26, 2011 at 3:52 pm

    Great episode. Nice crossover.

  • thetruetombo

    August 26, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Here I was, watching old AVGN episodes, when suddenly there was a wonderful golden icon drawing me in. After watching it, I was very impressed with how EPIC the contest for these rare games becomes. I can’t wait to see the movie, and another episode as soon as possible!. Also it would be good if you could find a working jaguar cd-i, as it needs a 3rd shot with some decent games. (If they exists). I find you to be a GREAT teacher in the art of forgotten video game history, and alot of my favorite episodes are the ones that talk about a console on a whole, or information about the console wars, which are still going on today.

Good luck again with the movie, James!

  • russiancthulhu

    August 26, 2011 at 3:55 pm

That was probably one of the best episodes so far! I so fucking loved it!

So, James, who was the actual owner of the golden NWC? Are they both (grey and golden) belong to Pat?

  • Rena-kun

    August 26, 2011 at 3:59 pm

When I saw in the comments that the games were “destroyed,” I instantly knew that he was going to destroy a LoZ 2 cart. Why would he actually destroy 15 grand? Still a great episode, though.

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:12 pm

booo you rewrote history – was hoping this would continue from the gameshow-games vid/pats video where nerd bought it in a garage sale..

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Everyone wants to know the real story lol. Did you really get that off of Ebay?

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:17 pm

Wow, when you hit the games with the hammer you gave me a freaking heart attack, I actually yelled out in shock. I should’ve known it was fake, but man did it make me jump!

By the way, this was hands down on of the best episodes you’ve done in such a long time. GREAT job!

  • stickshaka

    August 26, 2011 at 4:22 pm

If you don’t play the game then how would you know if it works or if you really have the real game and not some facsimile just like you yourself created?

The world’s rarest cars cost millions & they still get their engines started at least.

  • AFX

    August 26, 2011 at 4:23 pm

    @thetruetombo

he DOES have a working jaguar cd, if you bought the Vol 4 DVD and watched the bonus features you would know this :p

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:33 pm

I almost got a bit annoyed at the end, but luckily you didn’t smash the real deal :p .. Tho, I’m curious too, who’s got the gold one?

  • RNorthex

    August 26, 2011 at 4:34 pm

what is the real story behind getting these btw?
both pat and avgn reviews were awesome!

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Pat and James……….epic love both of you guys and i know pat had a grey cart but is the gold cart really real?? great vid james ive seen all of them and this is prob the best….next to atari porno :D

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:45 pm

    Awesome video

You gotta tell us tho James, who does the Gold cart belong too?

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:45 pm

wow, um this video, was okay, better than Kid Kool

  • Undertaker91

    August 26, 2011 at 4:46 pm

i thought you had gone crazy there for a minute when you destroyed the games! i was relieved when i saw you didnt really do it in the credits. i mean who breaks such valuable games? just one of those could get me through the rest cf college and a trip to see my gf

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:51 pm

This episode was full of AWESOME. I prefer the episode where we see more the nerd than the television screen.

  • Davy

    August 26, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Funny, informative and epic! The fuckin’ Nerd always delivers!

  • MotorcityBaller

    August 26, 2011 at 4:53 pm

A friend of mine owns a white NWC. He placed first at a regional NWC competition here in Detroit. He keeps it in a safe in his house.

  • August 26, 2011 at 4:55 pm

Why you can’t play the ORIGINAL NWC 1990 ?

    P.S Awesome episode :)

  • ohthatisassy

    August 26, 2011 at 5:07 pm

James if you see this, could you plleeeaaase just do a very quick unscripted video clearing up this video? Who owns the gold cart?!

  • Mister Buckethead

    August 26, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Legend of Zelda ? Legend of my ass !
    That line killed me xD

Really great episode, well written, well done. I had never heard of the NWC before . The video was interesting on a cultural side, and entertaining…. on a nerdy side i guess.
    Great job !

PS : What is the real story behind the scenes ? Does Pat own both of the cartridges ? Do you own both ? Or do you each own one ?
Did you really got them by pure luck on a cheap ebay set ?
I suppose you smashed fake ones, am i right ?

  • Action_Bastard

    August 26, 2011 at 5:10 pm

If someone had really destroyed those copies in my presence i’d murder someone.

  • WestBuiltAMountain

    August 26, 2011 at 5:14 pm

I actually got kind of bored and had to fast forward.

I’m just curious if you really got it in an Ebay auction like that? Almost feels like stealing when it’s worth so much – but damn, that’s crazy to have happen.

  • Mikeman2000

    August 26, 2011 at 5:16 pm

How could you destroy those games! What in the holy mother of fuck is wrong with you?!

  • Landofunk

    August 26, 2011 at 5:17 pm

That was a great reaction to the actual game. “Wait this is just SMB?”..awesome. :D

  • DekutheGreatku

    August 26, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Ya james please do a video where you describe whos it is and exactly how you got it, as well as how much. Im very interested!

  • gamerz

    August 26, 2011 at 5:25 pm

The episode was ok . So the nwc is just a rehash of any 3 randomly chosen games. That is lame. 3 games, 1 level each lol. I suppose only the most devout collector will understand the importance of nwc. Keep the nerd episodes coming James.

  • Santa Horse

    August 26, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Haven’t watched it yet, but I’m impressed you were able to get hold of this game and, judging by your comments on the “donate money” video (sorry, still haven’t got around to adding to my initial $10 payment, will surely do so in the next couple of days), this is going to be a good review. I look forward to watching it as soon as I’ve finished watching Summerslam from earlier this month.

  • August 26, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Great video, though light on the review side it was certainly funny. The end did feel a little anti climatic though, I was hoping for more from Pat other than just choking you, but hey it was an entertaining video none the less.

I too am interested in the BTS stuff – do you own the real carts at all? How did you make fake ones for the video? Would love to hear! :)

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    August 26, 2011 at 5:29 pm

The glowing golden shimmering light reflecting from the game + the epic music + gasp from the AVGN = best moment in recent (or all time) nerd history. I honestly wasn’t expecting Pat to pull the golden cartridge out (I knew earlier he had the gray version at least). Great use of lighting/editing to emphasize how rare/nerdy game collecting can get from the perspective of two hardcore retro gamers.

  • Shadd

    August 26, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Lol I can’t believe you didn’t reference ‘London After Midnight.’

Still though, that was a very well put together and great episode.

  • DaGandalf

    August 26, 2011 at 5:42 pm

I think this episode & the game glitches are the best episodes.

Oh yeah and i think you should do a behind the scenes for this explaining who owns the game what game did you really smash etc, etc.

Anyways an awesome video , especially when i wasn’t expecting much bicouse of the movie coming out and all that .

Keep up the good work, James! And Pat too . He should be in your videos more often .

  • flashbash64

    August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Who ever thinks they really destroyed those games are mentally retarded.

  • Volsung

    August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm

I highly enjoyed this episode. When AVGN was smashing the shit out of those carts, I was like “ohh shit”. I’d lose my mind.

I recall when I was fighting the Ruby weapon in FFVII. I had been fighting the thing for about an hour or longer – brutal. My friends wanted to leave, and not watch any more, so my one buddy walks up to the PS1, and fucking pushes the power button. Needless to say I lost my mind. They cleared out pretty fast. I went to his house, commandeered his t.v., and forced him to watch me defeat Ruby weapon as punishment. ..assholes.

  • MASTODON

    August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm

GREAT VIDEO!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

  • Phillythekid

    August 26, 2011 at 5:46 pm

This is so awesome. You went like “I need someone who is as obsessed with games as I am.” As soon as you said “…especially with the NES” I was like “PAT!!?!?!!”

    =D

friggin sweet! Now on with the video, I’m so excited to see the game, I’m about to shit my fuck

  • August 26, 2011 at 5:47 pm

I believe you gave my girlfriend a heartattack there. Me too…
Curious to know how you got those games, as you said, it’s pretty much the Holy Grail.

  • August 26, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Omg! One of the best episodes ever! I laughed so hard, the Nerd’s reaction is priceless!

Fucking AMAZING episode! Loved Pat’s part in it. Great job guys!

  • flashbash64

    August 26, 2011 at 5:48 pm

  • KosRoBot

    August 26, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Oh my God! This episode is just great!

  • slick3620

    August 26, 2011 at 5:53 pm

If you watch through the credits, there is a shot of them each holding an original copy. Nerd holding grey, Punk holding gold. This is probably in there to show us who owns what. And for the other idiots who think they would destroy the real thing.

  • Flinty

    August 26, 2011 at 5:55 pm

That was brilliant! Definitely one of the best scripted, acted and directed AVGN episodes.

  • Xeno89

    August 26, 2011 at 5:56 pm

When those cartridges got smashed my jaw dropped for a full minute. I heard about this game before and its extreme rarity and never fully understood what it was. This was a very entertaining (and at least in terms of gaming) educational episode. Thank god you didn’t destroy real ones.

Who owns those two anyway? The ending made it look like Pat owns the golden one and you the grey one. I would love to see a video of you both telling us how you got them :)

    In any case, great episode!

  • Phillythekid

    August 26, 2011 at 6:03 pm

    …………….
So much to cutting back on episode quality while you’re working on the movie.
This might be my new favorite AVGN episode.
The scene where you were both just staring at the gold cartridge? Or where you both have the idea “We are battling this out like men”? Instant classic.
And when the nerd came through, realizing that those games are actually just overpriced pieces of shit?
Man, this is just the best thing ever.
How did you do the scene with the smashed cartridges? You can’t possibly have hammered them… can you? Were those just placebos?
You two put a HUGE smile on mah face this evening!

    <3

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:05 pm

As far as ownership of the carts goes, I know Pat owns at least the gray cart. Not sure about the gold one.

  • katakis1

    August 26, 2011 at 6:11 pm

Guys, I’m pretty sure James only owns the reproduction cart.

A few days back I saw the video where Pat and James play some NES games in James’ basement. Well, he kind of gave a teaser for this episode and I checked wether he owns the grey cart or not. (http://cinemassacre.com/2004/05/05/nes-collection/)

There it still says that he only owns the blue copy, so I guess Pat owns both of them.

Wikipedia only tells about Pat owning one copy of the game though, but that might be wrong.

  • SpeedyEric

    August 26, 2011 at 6:12 pm

    :O The gold. It’s beautiful.

10:39- OMFG, that was so funny.

    15:30- NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    16:46- Oh, thank god.

  • katakis1

    August 26, 2011 at 6:12 pm

I’d still like to know how what cartridge you destroyed.
Seems kind of hard to fake with the time switches on the cart itself.

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:13 pm

@katakis – I just tweeted at Pat about it, maybe he can clear it up for us :)

  • Celstio

    August 26, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Im almost 100% that the cartridges where just fake replicas. I mean, he whould just have needed to tear the sitcker off a Zelda 2 and and cut out the NWC logo from a piece of paper. There is no way he whould ever have destroyed a 20k cartridge.

  • jsin1276

    August 26, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Man that guy was a douche, though anyway it was nice that you smashed them even though they were fakes the lot of them. Expected something better but oh well I am sure it is due to you being busy with the movie which I am looking forward to.

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Laughed my ass off.. Very funny.

  • flashbash64

    August 26, 2011 at 6:25 pm

Look you idiots. JAMES HAS THE COPIES! HE JUST USED FAKE ONES TO DESTROY!

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:26 pm

    haha great episode James

My heart stopped when the hammer was brought out.

By the way this episode made it on Wikipedia!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_World_Championships

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:29 pm

So, James, which one of them was your game? D:

  • penpan

    August 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm

nice that you saved the games at the end! I had a bad moment where you took the hammer out :P

  • _JM

    August 26, 2011 at 6:30 pm

    Celstio:
Of course he didn’t destroy the cartridges. Apparently you didn’t even watch the end of the video.

  • Calavera

    August 26, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Yeah you really need those paypal donations when you own a Nintendo World Championship Cartridge. That is fucked up James, you have plenty of money yet you are asking people to give you money like you can’t afford to make the movie yourself. You are getting people to give you money to make the movie which you will make money off of. James that is really fucked up. I know everybody will flame me for saying this, but you know it’s true.

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:35 pm

btw if you read the wikipedia article there is a company that sells replicas of NWC both gold and grey with dip switches I linked in my original post.

They could have used that as the props

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_World_Championships

scroll down you will see retrousb makes duplicates of the gold and grey carts

  • CW

    August 26, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Well, I skipped about 85% of that episode.

Enough with the damn skits. Good god; I want to see game reviews.

  • Daniel

    August 26, 2011 at 6:47 pm

How come James lost this unique opportunity to make some kind of spoof of “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”? It was all there. He could have used “The Ecstasy Of Gold” music by Ennio Morricone when they first see the cartridge and he could have done extreme close-ups shots just like Sergio Leone when directing the epic battle for the “golden cartridge”, in true west style. :/

Anyway, still it is a nice episode but I think it would have been way better if he did it this other way. :D

  • August 26, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Whew! James, for a minute, you really had me going there.
So, which one of you gets each of the cartridges? The gold one is gorgeous.

A different video, but still good. Loved it when both were jumping like crazies.

  • Terranigma freak

    August 26, 2011 at 6:56 pm

    @katakis1

But do we know when James updated his list? I mean, with all the stuff he’s doing, I figured the last thing he’d worry about is updating his collection list. Plus, seems like this episode was about him getting the cart. No point in showing off the repro cart now.

Either James owns it, or Pat owns it.

  • rangerjoe

    August 26, 2011 at 6:56 pm

    Funny!!!
I liked the part where you and Pat had the day dreams, they seemed to fit each of your guy’s style!!!

  • Blasphemy666

    August 26, 2011 at 7:00 pm

James raises a good point in this video, and for that reason I fuckin hate the collectors who just add to their collection and don’t even play the games driving the price up for me. I know Splatterhouse 2 and 3 are semirare genesis games and I wanna play them but the fucking cock tickler collectors drive up the fuckin prices on em so I have to emulate.

  • August 26, 2011 at 7:03 pm

That was shockingly hilarious. When you grabbed that hammer I thought you were going to kill Pat, then I freaked when you smashed the games. Nice fake-out on us there. That is stupid those games cost so much when you can get the full versions for cheap on separate cartridges that would never even amount to the total cost of the single rare copy. Surprised the new Nerd is out so early. Does this mean we’ll have another for September real soon, or are we changing time releases?

  • TheValsalvaManeuver

    August 26, 2011 at 7:13 pm

Great writing and directing in this episode. You had me clenching my teeth for a moment there. If you can get me on the edge of my seat like that, it’s a good sign for the AVGN movie.

  • TomM

    August 26, 2011 at 7:16 pm

That was great! One of the best AVGN episodes to date. When you smashed the NWC carts I practically pissed myself. The whole video reminded me when I was a kid and did trades with friends. It’s like the times when you traded with a friend but then realized you got screwed over and traded back. Thanks for the nostalgia in more than one way!!!

  • WingedKitsune

    August 26, 2011 at 7:17 pm

There should totally be an episode where the Nerd and Punk duke it out. xD

This is one of the best episodes yet.

  • August 26, 2011 at 7:20 pm

    that. was. EPIC!!!

my favourite AVGN episode at the moment, good job pat & james!!!
must have taken you days to make this whole video!!!

    August 26, 2011 at 7:23 pm

  • August 26, 2011 at 7:32 pm

OMG! who owns this little piece of heaven, is it the nerd? or is it pat? I hope it’s from james, he needs one of these

  • JohnnyUsername1987

    August 26, 2011 at 7:32 pm

Friends, help, what music track plays in the beginning of the episode?

  • August 26, 2011 at 7:42 pm

    How to become rich
    1. Acquire 100 copies of legend of zelda
    2. Remove all of the labels
    3. Print out the nintendo world championship logo and glue it on
    4. Sell them under fake identity
    5. Profit

did you really dis brake tha gold cartrage?

  • FluffyDDG

    August 26, 2011 at 7:49 pm

I literally screamed when The Nerd broke those cartages.

I wonder who owns the Gold Cartridge, if it’s an actual gold cartridge.

  • August 26, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Many people will try to copy this sucker over there and sell it to some poor geeks that trying desperately to find one,as we speak now imagine what would hapen on ebay.

  • Reputator

    August 26, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Yeah, you knew you had to show the real ones after the credits, or else get 15,000 emails asking about it. :P

wow you (fake) broke the games not knowing if they were really different.

    Brilliant! I can’t stop laughing!

  • August 26, 2011 at 8:32 pm

I would love to have one of those copies (the one he smashed) just for display. Is it just a zelda catridge cut up?

  • mr.massacre

    August 26, 2011 at 8:35 pm

Yet again, another spectacular video! I started watching AVGN almost 5 years ago and I have been hooked ever since. Cinemassacre is just plain awesome! You shared your passion with all of your fans and it is a true inspiration to us all.

    August 26, 2011 at 8:58 pm

    good stuff nerd, thanks!

  • August 26, 2011 at 9:12 pm

It was good, but there is something awkward on the acting with The Nerd and the other guy sharing the same space. I feel the interaction works better with other people and characters in general (Mike Matei, the other guy who plays the ninja and the game glitch gremlin, the nostalgia critic, even the robot or the mario 3 possessed cartridge). Leave the NES Punk to other kind of videos.

Also, that “deep nerd voice” again…I don’t like it.

I think these are issues you should consider when filming the movie.

  • Apoc_Belmont

    August 26, 2011 at 9:18 pm

I’m basically here just to tell you how much I appreciate all the things you do for the old school gaming community James/Jim.

It is always a joy watching you whether it is as the AVGN, reviewing movies, makng top tens or your pure kindhearted self.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and wish you would go on forever with all of these things.

    I salute you!

  • August 26, 2011 at 9:23 pm

c’mon!! tell us how u got those cartriges! no way u destroyed them :P

  • August 26, 2011 at 9:27 pm

If I were a guessing man, I’d say they got it by both chipping in for it. Pat would keep it, but he would have to help James make the video.

Pat gets the game, James get a paycheck.

  • Joker83

    August 26, 2011 at 9:45 pm

I can’t believe you got your hands on a gold NWC 1990 cart! That is amazing. I used to dream about it when I was a kid (for some reason I thought it was a collection of every game, hey, I was 7)

Did some guy really just sell it to you on ebay by accident? there are only, like, 25 of those right? How much is it actually worth? That’s amazing.

  • ZWAN

    August 26, 2011 at 9:51 pm

There’s no way you destroyed, the real cartridges. That is obvious.
Question, did you actually obtain the game? I like to think my self an avid game collector and check ebay auctions endlessly, and I’m surprised I never saw this auction. But if you own it, total props to you, you deserve it.

    Such a relief.

awesome video!!! i know the grey one is Pat’s, is the gold one the nerd’s? how to did you happen to get it?

  • August 26, 2011 at 10:23 pm

Haha awesome man, definitely a more unique episode. the part toward the end where Pat is about to win and you snap into nerd mode is one of my new favorite parts of the series man. It’s like you flip a switch and go from James to angry nerd instantly, fuckin’ classic. I used to watch these games on ebay as well, and if memory serves i think i posted a link here once too to see if you’d be interested in it, so it’s good to see you got your hands on one and beat the shit out of it for our viewing pleasure man. yes i know they were fakes. keep it up man.

  • Steven Jielburg

    August 26, 2011 at 10:29 pm

I loved this episode. I knew at some point you’d review Nintendo World Championship, or at least talk about it like SwordQuest. The direction you took with it, however, was better I think. You review the game, you discuss it, and you tried something new. It also gives insight into what to expect from the movie (whenever it’s released). Great episode, and I can’t wait to see more. :D

  • Djister

    August 26, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Great episode! Certainly didn’t see that one coming. I love the part where Pat finds the gold cart in the box. :)

  • August 26, 2011 at 11:11 pm

Holy crap!!! That’s freaking AWESOME!!!!!!! (and I was like, “holy shit!!!” when you beat the games with a hammer. but i was glad at the ending!!!)

  • August 26, 2011 at 11:33 pm

    August 27, 2011 at 12:27 am

OMG James!!! That was an ‘AWESOME SAUCE’ episode! You and Pat had me smilin’ through the entire thing and I enjoyed the history and importance of the game. Not to mention seeing all 3 versions of the cartdriges! WOW!! My jaw dropped to the floor as soon as I saw the hammer!! Thank Jeebus I waited to see the end!

Question: Who got to keep which cartridge in the end? You guys pooled together to obtain all three? Just curious.

PS- You are an inspiration to me as a film enthusiast and theater student. If I can get what I hope accomplished, I hope you get a chance to see it! KEEP UP THE FANOMINAL WORK BUDDY!!!!

  • August 27, 2011 at 12:28 am

I would have explained a bit more history, but with myself being a game nerd, I’ve read so much about this, and I’ve played the repro cart. Newbies might not understand the full effect, though.

I was literally yelling at the screen when he hammered those things. I kept telling myself it was fake….So glad I was right.

Nintendo’s been making reproduction T-Shirts of this thing now. lol I think you should do a sequel with another competition. 1991 Championship maybe???

  • August 27, 2011 at 12:32 am

Awesome, you finally did a review of Nintendo World Championships! That’s great. I think this works perfectly as a companion to Pat’s video on the subject. They’re both different, but good in they’re own ways, which is perfect. I loved how you destroyed the carts at the end, slipping into nerd mode. It’s a good thing you showed us that you really didn’t smash them! It might have been funnier if you kept it a secret that they weren’t really destroyed, but I think that might have been almost TOO evilly hilarious! :D

  • August 27, 2011 at 1:05 am

LOL, I liked seeing Pat again after the marathon he did with your cameo. I’m also gonna guess you and Pat payed for the game together since it must have been really expensive.

  • JackeeLee

    August 27, 2011 at 1:24 am

This was great. It was just like watching a movie. Suspense when you were looking in the box only to find a reproduction copy. Then Pat had the grey card and that was great to see just that. Then you threw in a twist by finding the gold card that you thought was Zelda at first. Then classic nerd when you were competing for the set. Then goosebumps from there on out when you smashed both of the games! What a relief for you to show them both at the end, good thing I watched till the end.
    One of your best works!!!

How do you reproduce the games you destroy in your videos? Im assuming you just take another cheap cartriage and paint it, but those looked really good.

Pat was awesome. “I would love another copy of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt. Im making a coffee table out of them.” I was LMFAO

  • angel85

    August 27, 2011 at 1:33 am

For a second I actually thought you did the gamer equivalent of smashing the ten commandments, but I knew you would never do something so insane…

  • August 27, 2011 at 1:53 am

excellant video. another great. cant wait for the movie. must feel really good to have literally a complete collection of NES games. I mean. What are you missing if anything?

  • August 27, 2011 at 2:19 am

James we gotta know….did you really run into an ebay listing for a “lot” of NES games and get that? What’s the true story here…..that would be the most incredible thing to ever happen

  • August 27, 2011 at 2:30 am

The NWC games are both Pats. He bought them and was kind enough to let us use them for this episode of AVGN. And yes they are both real.

  • Stylix

    August 27, 2011 at 2:34 am

Wow, I had no clue this was actually a cart. I went to the nintendo power fest and remember my dad entering me in the contest and playing this. I was only 9 back then and was way too nervous and excited to really manage any decent score. It was so intimidating standing there with the announcer calling out the action, seeing the other players in the corners of your eyes, and feeling like everyone was watching. Thankfully I didnt choke too badly and make a lot of stupid mistakes, but I did go at too slow of a pace and barely had any time left when I got to the tetris portion of the game. My score suffered badly and I didnt win, but I did walk out of there with a very pleasant memory. Its still a fun story to share with my gamer friends when we are taking a nostalgia trip to our childhood days, but it certainly doesn’t make them nearly as jealous as it did when I told them about it back in grade school.

  • August 27, 2011 at 3:03 am

    Thank you MotherFuckerMike.
I figured they were legit, but I was really curious if he bought a random box of games and ended up with that gold copy. That would have been unreal

  • Zentu

    August 27, 2011 at 3:13 am

Oh Man, they BOTH belong to Pat?…. Well its still Preaty Cool. Can I guess that the Games Destroyed were, The Adventure of Dizzy and Some Random Gray-Cart Game?….. I just Don’t see a LoZ game being broken and on the floor..

…Ought to be searching for that Sword Quest Sword….Maybe the other winners of that tourny long ago may have an idea where to find them? That is before Atari pulled the plug on it.

  • August 27, 2011 at 3:15 am

  • BorisCarloff

    August 27, 2011 at 5:43 am

I’m sure Nintendo now really angry, because they are still looking for this game, and he just… awesome. I always missed this in AVGN series, my favorite terminating in Dick Tracy, that was fucking awesome. Why he didn’t destroy Lester the Unlikely or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or any of games since 2010? I remember how he shot from bow 32X, that was pure awesomeness. Basically, i hope in movie he will destroy E.T. game, please destroy this shit as awesome as you can.

  • TheCrimsonExecutioner

    August 27, 2011 at 5:43 am

wow! that was a brilliant episode. you really nailed the dynamic between your two personas. i hope it finally silences all those retards who were complaining about pat, him and james make a great double act. any plans to do some more stuff together guys?

  • August 27, 2011 at 6:35 am

This is a real treat for all like me that are long time avgn fans and just last year we’ve been watching Pat’s videos on retroware. I agree with the rest, this was an excellent episode and this gives me a ton of hope for the AVGN Movie. I absolutely LOVE how you used Pat’s character and his almost sick obsession. Great direction!!

    August 27, 2011 at 7:16 am

Great, great episode. Better writing than most I can remember – I really prefer the episodes where you investigate retrogamer/collector culture from your own perspective, rather than the ones where you just go apeshit and yell “fuuuck” for 20 minutes. Also, a lot of history in this episode, regarding the NWC and the competition, liked that part a lot. Hilarious dialogue – the “nerd seal of DISapproval” and the “coffee table made from Duck Hunt” lines made me laugh out loud, something that rarely happens when watching something by myself. I’m surprised I haven’t seen you guys do more collaborations, you seem like a perfect duo – maybe geographical reasons? Anyway, thumbs up from here. If this is the kind of stuff you can churn out when taking your time, please continue to do so.

I loved this episode :) It was funny as could be. And it shows that even though a game is rare doesn’t make it good :)

Even funnier is that enough people will still believe you destroyed “the extra copies” of the games instead of you using some old useless cartridges :)

    James,

Any interest in a gold copy of Mike Tyson’s Punch Out for the Famicom in Japan? I believe there are only 9 (dont quote me on the number!) in existence and I can get one for a couple hundred bucks.

Let me know if interested and I can help you out!

  • Ty Hope

    August 27, 2011 at 10:20 am

I was wrong on the number, just checked. Not sure how many there are, but they were never for sale and given out as a prize for something. They are rare though.

If I can swaggle the price down, I’ll pick it up and donate it to you for free.

I’ll keep you posted on that.

  • August 27, 2011 at 10:53 am

LOL. I understand now why you said there wasn’t much to say about the game itself! ha ha ha but very funny to see you and NES punk fight over for the cartriges… the real question now is : who posess the games ?

    great video. thumbs up

  • August 27, 2011 at 11:06 am

  • the_hitman86

    August 27, 2011 at 11:15 am

Can somebody actually explain to me where the hell the NES Punk is getting the money for these games?

  • aztoya06

    August 27, 2011 at 11:26 am

I have to say I did not like this episode much mainly because Pat the NES Punk was in it. I am not too fond of him because he overacts a little too much making him seem wierd. I guess that just may be his style and I may just have to warm up to him, but right now he seems so out of place that I forgot I was watching and AVGN episode.. Still love ya though James.

  • August 27, 2011 at 11:39 am

Almost thought that you broke em, great video man. Love your work dude.

  • August 27, 2011 at 12:13 pm

CONGRATZ JAMES! I’m a huge fan and it’s awesome to see you got both copies of NWC.

  • ckrules

    August 27, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I liked this episode but i find lately the episodes have been lacking comedy wise. I think its mainly to do with the Nerd being too nice. What im trying to say is that in past episodes such as “Bugs bunny’s birthday blowout” and “Superman 64″ the Nerd seemed meaner and because he was meaner, it made his dialogue seem funnier. I guess its hard to explain but we miss the old nerd where he would scream more often and shout at the game. Lately its more of a regular review then a “AVGN” review. Just watch the stuff from 2008/2009 and watch the stuff now and you will see what i mean. Theres a huge difference. I’m only saying this as constructive criticism

  • THECOOLPERSON

    August 27, 2011 at 12:23 pm

my new favorite episode, i almost crapped my pants when pat pulled out the gold cart and at the end when james started smashing them, although im sure they probably didnt smash the real carts but still bravo my new fav episode

I didn’t like Pat’s style as well until I started watching more collaborations with him. He’s grown on me since and seems like a cool dude.

    August 27, 2011 at 2:40 pm

My suspicions that the Nerd was an overgrown baby were confirmed in this episode. He barely outwitted the Punk, and the fantasy sequence? Pure gold. And it all started when I noticed how the Nerd drinks his beer, like a wa-wa.

A great episode, and I’m just wondering where the hell does one get or create fake NES carts. And luckily the collection pertains to NES games, because if James or Pat tried to get the rarest Famicom cartridge in the world, either a Kinnikuman or a Rockman 4 gold cartridges.

  • August 27, 2011 at 2:43 pm

My jaw remained dropped during the whole time that I thought you really cracked them.

  • Michael777

    August 27, 2011 at 2:45 pm

I was so relieved when I saw at the end that you didn’t really destroy the 2 games. I was like “WTF…he fuckin’ destroys 2 copies of the probably most rare nes games…ahhh, that were 2 fake cartridges”
(lol, I’m going through the cable in your basement)

  • DominikFFM

    August 27, 2011 at 3:15 pm

sorry james but this episode sucks, continue playing really bad games!

  • Hajeil Sounak

    August 27, 2011 at 3:18 pm

    @AVGN and Crew

    Two quick questions.

    1) Clearly those were fakes that you made up so you could destroy them. But what were they made out of? I assume the gold cart was from a copy of Zelda but how about the grey cartridge?

    2) Did you really find a gold copy of NWC 1990 in that box of games that you bought off of Ebay?

  • August 27, 2011 at 3:28 pm

i love this episode … you can see the second the punks heart shatters into a million little pieces when the nerd destroys those games i love this show… keep them coming …genius stuff with great comedy..

This is an interesting episode. I know you’ve done “story”-ish ones before, like the Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre ones, but this is the first one where it seems that you legitimately explored the Nerd as an actual character in depth. I’m guessing this is a little bit of a hint at the sort of thing we’ll be seeing in the movie (besides the normal stuff we’ve come to know, that is).

Also, count me in on the dogpile of questions about the logistics behind this one.

After watching this again, I was left wondering: Since Pat did a cameo on your show, would it be too much to ask if you could get some of the “Pure Pwnage” gang on here? I know they aren’t really active anymore (not totally sure why, since they were HUGE and had just finished the first season of the TV series, and had also just finished the second “season” of the online show [which was great, btw]. I think it would bee cool to see that.

    August 27, 2011 at 3:57 pm

DominikFFM – grow up. The whole concept of the episode was centred around how the rareness and price of the cartridge is unjustified by the quality (or lack of it) of the game itself. If you have a problem with James trying something different once in a while, do yourself a favour and stick to watching his old episodes. You’ll know what you’re going to get with those, and you won’t have to worry about James doing something stupid like varying material.

  • August 27, 2011 at 4:13 pm

    DominikFFM: You’re an idiot.

Anyway, this was propably one of thee best AVGN episodes EVAR! James my man, congratulations! After playing 5+ years of mostly shitty games you deserve it!

So conflicted. Don’t want to spoil anything but check out Pat NWC episode and you’ll see why this one doesn’t make any sense… story wise.

Well James, since you stated that you would be putting alot of your time into bigger projects (AVGN The Movie *cough *cough) and would continue to make normal avgn episodes that would be much more simplistic and easier to produce, This sir is one of the best AVGN episodes to date. GREAT JOB!

  • August 27, 2011 at 4:51 pm

To people talking about “complete NES collections” (well, I saw one person mention something about James basically having one):

I doubt anyone will ever have a complete collection. Not a fully complete (…) one anyway; this would include unreleased games. I have my doubts that there even exists a second copy of Bio Force Ape, for instance. And then there are many games that have never surfaced, and many probably never will.

I think that anyone who has a complete collection of the released AND licensed games will soon move on and try to find unlicensed games, and then – as the most hardcore of collectors do – begin a long and hard search for a single copy of a single game. I believe the guy who got the Bio Force Ape cartridge had been keen on finding it for about 10 years.

    Collector Hell.

love the new camera, now it seems like a proper movie. The acting was great. But it kinda didnt make sense, i thought nerd had the grey one for ages, and then pat took it, but they made out he never seen it before.
Pat won cause he practice all the time on it.

    August 27, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Hey Nerd! Great video! But its a little confusing, since after I saw your NWC video, I saw the Nes Punk NWC video in which you are at the end. So who is the real owner of the gray and gold NCW games? Its you?

  • juggalo747

    August 27, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Hey everybody who is wondering, MotherFucker Mike left a comment on here yesterday that said that Pat is the owner of BOTH cartridges.

  • mantrox

    August 27, 2011 at 5:44 pm

I thought the ending was unnecessary, but so many comments proved me wrong. Did you seriously thought he would destroy these games? xD Wow. Congrats on the video, one of your finest episodes.

  • franz

    August 27, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Well according to the AVGN’s game collection page, he does own the blue reproduction cartridge, but not the real NWC game.

  • August 27, 2011 at 6:40 pm

@mantrox LOL I find it hilarious as well considering that it seems as if the fans are watching this series for the first time. Remember the Dick Tracy review? Everyone kept thinking he destroyed the copy with a hole he was drilling. Then he revealed it to be the Deadly Towers cartridge.

  • August 27, 2011 at 7:06 pm

I almost cried when you smashed up those games. Does screaming and tearing count as almost?

I don’t quite get the point of pretending to destroy Dick Tracy. You can get the game on ebay for like $3. So why destroy another game, when it doesn’t matter?

  • August 27, 2011 at 9:49 pm

i agree with 1LevelUp… who owns the golden one????!!!!!!!

  • August 27, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Great work James. Nothing like shitty sports video games to drive the mind into such a bull rage.

  • Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

    August 27, 2011 at 10:51 pm

Great video as usual James. I gotta ask though, who owns the gold NWC cart? You or Pat? I remember the giveaway from back in the day from Nintendo Power so it was cool actually seeing the cart in action instead of just reading about it.

Really hope to see a Neo Geo video from you soon. Please? Pretty please?

  • Grimmjow Jeagerjaques

    August 27, 2011 at 10:55 pm

Oh, so the grey & gold carts were Pat’s. Good for him. Maybe if the AVGN movie does well James will be able to snag a copy for himself. Grest vid. once agin James.

  • August 27, 2011 at 11:19 pm

People keep saying they want to see The Nerd do a Neo Geo review…theres only one problem. There are no shitty Neo Geo games.

I like many other people want to know who owns the Gold Cart. whichever one of you does you were either damn lucky and some idiot sold it to you cheap or you had al lot of money to waste.

  • fcabanski

    August 28, 2011 at 12:57 am

Nobody can watch this, then honestly say the AVGN movie won’t be great. James and his cohorts can get it done.

  • ejp022791

    August 28, 2011 at 1:21 am

Lol, damn, I thought AVGN owned one of them. I bet one day Pat will own a copy of Stadium Events.

  • August 28, 2011 at 2:14 am

Sorry to hear that you didn’t nab a copy james. I’m sure that your reaction to getting a botched copy must have hurt. As a game collector I do applaud Pat for owning both versions though.

For the rest of you, here is why I say what I say. Look up the game on wikipedia and you will see: On 26 August, 2011, a gold cartridge version of Nintendo World Championships was featured on the 104th episode of the Angry Video Game Nerd show. This episode also features a crossover with Pat the NES Punk, and Cinemassacre.com’s Mike Matei confirmed that both the grey and gold cartridges used in the episode were real and both belonged to Pat, although the cartriges that were destroyed in the episode were stunt props.

  • August 28, 2011 at 1:56 pm

I will admit I do not like pat the NES Punk on his show, HOWEVER on this show he played excellently. His character was actually very likable here and I know it was co-written by both James and Pat.

But Pat I must say this was a shining moment for you, you did really well and it does make me want to continue to watch your show and see how things progress with it. The writing here for your part was just amazing.

And as far as the fake games go, very original James, I bet it took a lo tof creativity to reproduce those cartridges.

  • August 28, 2011 at 10:32 pm

So, who actually owns the carts?

    Hey guys,

I just want to say great job on this one. I think the music and musical transitions really shined in this video and “amped up” (har har) the presentation. I took special notice as I’m an audio guy myself and think you put a lot more care into that on this one. That’s not to say you haven’t integrated sound and music well in the past, but you took it to a new level here. Very proud!

    August 29, 2011 at 10:42 am

I entered into a local qualifying round for the (second?) NWC. After scoring well in the first round, my score was still in the top 5 after a couple hours. But they kept trying to get me to put down another $10 to try again and better my score, even after multiple refusals. It seemed more like a money-grabbing exercise than a friendly competition.

I scored well in the first place by a bit of a cheat that I had heard about. During the SMB segment, go down the pipe and collect the coins, then exit and die on purpose. Restarting the stage and pipe section is a much faster way to collect the 50 coins than playing normally, giving you more time for the other game segments.

Koga, Pat has some really good episodes on his channel. There are also at least 3 with a cameo from AVGN. Panic Restaurant and Alisia Dragoon reviews are my favs. Pat reminds me of a cross between the spotty one from the simpsons that usualy works for krusty burger and bill murray.

So… How did you do that?

  • greedo

    August 29, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Hey, I thought this episode was pretty good, but I do have a couple of criticisms for you:

    1. It took too long to get to the game. I know that the game is probably too short, but I think you guys could have shaved at least two to three minutes off. I like long videos and all, but hey- get to the action a little sooner!

    2. The ending. It seemed a tad forced. While I have no problem with you smashing up cartridges, it just felt like you were retreading old ground. It seems a bit like you were descending into self-parody. In fact, part of me wonders if the series hasn’t run it’s course. Like you said, there’s only so far that you can go with swearing, and it seems if you struggle sometimes to keep the series fresh and entertaining.

Anyway, that’s all I have. I love the series, and appreciate everything you do to entertain us. Ciao!

  • juggalo747

    August 29, 2011 at 10:51 pm

    @andodel

Hmm, I dunno. What I am sure of is that they definately did NOT take a gold cartridge (Zelda of one of the Camerica carts) and another random gray cart and put fake labels on them. Nope. What they did was buy two NWC gold carts and two NWC gray carts and smash one of each. Duh.

  • August 30, 2011 at 1:26 am

    @WestBuiltAMountain

You’re missing the point. It’s obvious that people who watched this are frantically asking whether or not it’s really destroyed. The fact of the matter is that people not only didn’t watch it all the way through, but also think it’s like they didn’t expect it to happen in the first place. It’s a given considering that the game is only three games that the Nerd already has with a time limit added on to it. Of course he’s gonna destroy it otherwise would it be worth reading everyone’s priceless reactions? I mean it’s the Nerd. It’s funny whenever he destroys a game, it’s part of his humor.

  • PlasticLion

    August 30, 2011 at 2:29 am

Ugh. Bad. Shit. It’s rare so only rich people have it although it’s actually worthless. I find it hard to believe that you’ve actually run out of shitty games that were mass produced.

I guess I’ll watch your Top Gun episode again. I can relate to that.

I didn’t miss the point at all. I got it.

It just makes no sense to pretend to destroy a shitty, common game you can get for $2. That makes no sense, really.

Perhaps maybe he owns Dick Tracy and he didn’t want to destroy it? That’s the only thing I can think of.

  • Mr. Vermin

    August 30, 2011 at 3:07 pm

awesome video! I actually really like videos with a kind of story to it, it made many of James’ videos very unique. and its also very informative and funny at the same time. Call me what you will, but I didn’t realize this game was so rare until I saw this, but I was also pretty shocked when I saw him hammer them to pieces. That said, I found the mid-credits clip very clever and witty.

Loved everything about this video. James and Pat work great together, I love collaborations and crossovers. pretty shitty the actual game is only 3 parts of games that are pretty cheap, but its what it stood for and the importance it had at its time that makes it so valuable I’d imagine.

Thanks as always James, and thank you Pat ! Funny shit.

This brings me back. I played in the NWC back when I was in 2nd grade So I think I was around 8 years old. It was sooooooo much fun going to the Nintendo Power Fest in Chicago and I remember pulling up with my dad and there was a huge inflateable Mario infront of McCormic place and then they had every single Nintendo game ever made available to play for free on individual Kiosks as well as special shows they put on. Then of course, there was the NWC section which had numerous Kiosks set up just to practice Mario, Rad Racer, & Tetris. Then for I think $15 you could get in the actual competition. I tried twice and never made it past the first round. Eventhough I sucked at the NWC it was a blast hanging out there for the entire day just playing any game you could imagine. I remember pissing everyone off by going to the Rad Racer practice Kiosks and putting the ending code in so nobody could play it. There was no way to reset the Kiosk manually without a staff member. LOL good times!

OH MY GOD!!!! I almost had a heart attack!! I kept telling myself, “The Nerd isn’t THAT crazy!!” But looking at the shattered remains on the floor, I felt my spirit die. If it wasn’t for that last bit showing their safety, I would’ve been forced to call GPS (game protection services) and have them both put down. * huge sigh of relief* :P

Anyway, who owns the gold cartridge? Are they both Pat’s, or did AVGN get some NWC love?

  • menny

    August 31, 2011 at 4:55 am

    The fucking nerd! aww yea!

  • August 31, 2011 at 6:46 am

This was awesome! This is one of my favorite episodes, thanks for taking the extra time and effort to make a nice long killer episode!
    The childhood-bartering scene was great.
I can only assume that with Pat holding the gold cart at the end, that HE is the actual owner?

The story was awesome, I’m curious if you did actually get lucky obtaining NWC with an ebay grab-box though.

As an old school comic-book collector, I know there’s nothing more exciting than finding a gem while flipping through tons of comics at a yard sale or flea market.

  • August 31, 2011 at 7:28 am

My cousin claims that he once had the gold cartridge, given to him by his uncle who did promotional work for Nintendo. One of our other cousins, 3 years old at the time, broke the cartridge in half. I don’t know for sure if this is true or not, but he gets mad every time I bring the story up. I told him he could have paid for a year of college for what that cart goes for on eBay!

  • August 31, 2011 at 8:22 am

This is one of the best episodes YET, James. Very funny. I feel like Pat’s performance with you was the best one yet. I felt SO GIDDY WHEN PAT FOUND THE GOLD CARTRIDGE and hopped up and down in my seat like a Japanese schoolgirl in heat, right along with you two.
And I know those had to be props at the end, but dammit if I didn’t feel more pissed than Pat did.

  • August 31, 2011 at 1:32 pm

If the actual AVGN movie will have this kind of feel to it I’m really looking forward to it!

@Golkar I call bullshit on that. Obviously you are entitled to your opinion but I find most of Pat’s material almost as funny as James’. He definitely does have a different brand of humor but variety is a good thing.

  • September 1, 2011 at 1:53 am

Reminds me that I also have a lot of rare games to destroy these days!

  • September 1, 2011 at 4:30 am

I’ve watched many Pat videos. He just doesn’t have the special effects expertise necessary to make great video game reviews like the Nerd does (or should I say, used to). Please, James, don’t use Pat ever again. He is long winded and obnoxious. Teach him some special effects and editing tricks that he can use in his videos, for the love of God.

  • September 1, 2011 at 5:18 am

Personally I’d like to see the Nerd cut loose on Predator…Now there’s a shitty game…Not only did they put the governator in pink…but on the “Big Mode” the sky was pink…or maybe Target Renegade…what an aweful Double Dragon rip that piece of shit was…Or maybe he’ll really go balls out and do a review of Rap Jam for the SNES…There was a deceiving title…it was like Magic Johnson’s Fast Break with rappers faces cut into it…and not a single rap song.

  • ErnieGabrys

    September 12, 2011 at 7:36 pm

AVGN. ive been meaning to write into you for some time. a classic nes game that i know you would enjoy doing a review for is P.O.W Prisoner or War. Its bad enough that after awhile you will bust the fuck out of the game, but good enough to make you wanna beat the fuckin thing. I’ve played this game my entire life and cannot finish it for the life of me. I have only finished it by cheating anyways, have a look and please do a review of it, i know that many people will love the review and you will have many interesting things to say about it.

    Keep up the good work

James, this was a damn good episode, and pretty intertaining, I really hope that the close minded pureists that can’t stand your development don’t taint you opinion on long time nerd fans, and people that wait pacently too see what you’ve got in store. Your alredy a big name, and you’re going places most of us could never dream of. From a long time admirer who really hopes the posers don’t get too you, you’re on top of you’re game, and things just keep getting better.

Dont listen to the haters James. This was funny, and so was Pat. I enjoyed it more after watching it a few times. Sure, AVGN is you’re signature work, but people need to realize if you just run the same idea into the ground over and over, they will bitch about that then. At least you mix it up for the character sometimes. I enjoy everything you make, as I’m sure many others do.

I really like this episode! Its simple – as in realistic not procedure, Im sure some people must of had similar experiences/motives. I want to thank both of you (and anyone els involved in the making) for this entertainment.

  • October 20, 2011 at 4:53 pm

You can tell that the gold NWC cart was actually a Legend of Zelda cart. You can clearly see when James smashes it the cr2032 battery (used for the battery backup) comes flying out. Dont get me wrong, I’m not nitpicking, I think he did a stellar job on recreating those cartridges and they looked completely authentic. All I’m saying is that anyone who has ever taken the time to replace one of those batteries will instantly recognize it.
(And it’s a pain if you don’t have the right screwdriver, you can use a small flathead, but it’ll ruin the screwdriver, and probably strip the screws too. I replaced my battery long before you could buy one on amazon for $5.)

Nevertheless, it’s a nice vid. I read a lot of people’s comments saying how their heart sank when they saw James smash up the cart, and I wish I could have had that feeling too, but like I said, I saw the battery pop out. :(

for the gold one :You took a copy LoZ and removed the label and put the NWC logo on it.

for the gray one: You took a copy of AANNNNYYY shitty game you could find (like BTTF or Top Gun XD ) and Replaced the label with the NWC label

  • November 7, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I don’t think I ever heard of Pat untill this. I saw him at one of the panel videos, but didn’t really care much about him. After this I watched all his full review videos and a bunch of other stuff.. He is amazingly cool. Just like James. I REALLY appreciate this video. It’s high on my top favorite nerd videos list.

Good job to everyone in the crew ^ ^,

  • kozmicaos

    November 8, 2011 at 4:12 pm

LOL!! Pat’s reaction was so authentic! I could feel his insane pain! (yeah it hurted to see, even being a fake cartridge, that golden shining blowing out in pieces!) T_T

I wonder if the real ones still exist. Maybe its forgotten in someone’s attic…who knows.

a guy named “shinu” offered to sell me the gold NWC cart for $20,000 back in summer of 2008. i was going to buy it but i declined. the $20k can better be invested elsewhere i figured. it actually ended up selling to another guy for $17k who then resold it for $20k about a year ago (it was actually in a yahoo! news article on the front page).

  • jordanhaines

    November 21, 2011 at 6:31 pm

of course they’re not real, why would the nerd bash the game and its popularity and price and then actually spend that kind of money on it?? the first thing to pop out of the gold cartridge is the cr2032 battery..

This was the first time I was really disappointed of an AVGN episode. At the beginning I would have rated every AVGN episode at least an 8/10, but all the episodes since Day Dreaming Davey only around 4-6/10.

The episodes of 2011 seem to lack the intensity as well as creativity. It’s still nice to see the AVGN, but it’s nowhere as good as the older episdoes. Maybe he was already busy with preparations for the movie.

I’m really looking forward to the movie and hope that the AVGN will be back full force. :-)

I own a grey and I have played and handled a gold.  James’s props are dead on except the part when he smashed them and we saw the boards.  Inside the original, the circuit boards encompass the entire case.    The boards are thicker than a standard game and I guess Nintendo used a PCB to make them.

This is the second time I watched this episode. The first time I thought i didn’t like it, but turns out I love it! My favourite part is when Pat and the Nerd are picturing what they would do with the cartridges. Pat pushing the Nerd out of the spotlight = hilarious. And thanks to Mrs. Nerd’s blog, knowing how much effort Pat put into getting the cartridges there and working on this episode with James just makes it all the better. Great job guys!

One of my favorite episodes! When james starts going on about the three games I started laughing and couldn’t stop because I knew exactly what the Nerd was going to do. Pat was awsome. “Don’t even look at it” then Pat takes a quick glance. LOLLLL!!! If we don’t see Pat return in the movie, I would like to see more of him in future episodes.

Do you think that they have single digit IQs!? They wouldn’t break the real thing. Did you even pay attention to the end after the credits!? They either had the two real cartridges and reproduced a copy of each to break, or they made a bunch of fake copies to break.

The video shows that they have the real ones protected, and the fakes ones are the ones they broke.

You forgot Nintendo campus challenge 1991 it’s extremely rare and only 1 copy was released and on the internet it cost about $20,100.00 literally so if you make much money i say you should do a part 2 of Nintendo world Championships for the campus challenge.

  • June 17, 2013 at 6:00 pm

I’m guesing the destroied one was a zelda cart. that he glued a NWC logo on. I dont care if you have a million copies, if it is worth a fortune, I wouldn’t damage a single one.
