I wish I was visited by a nija turtle though..

@GoldRoger you hafta admit, the costume was better than the ones used in Ninja turtles 3 LOL

Great video James. Any wonder you love the turtles. If I had He-man show up at my birthday I would be rapped. Although a muscled man in a loin cloth showing up to my 13th birthday sounds a little gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

    Nostalgia rules.

Coincidentally It’s actually my birthday today too, though I think 22 might be a little old for a guy in a turtle costume to dance for my entertainment and hog the limelight.

Wow what an awful turtle. His face is hilarious! I wonder what kind of voice did he use :P

  • August 2, 2011 at 4:26 am

Holy shit… I would have ran away from that thing. I’ve always had a fear of people in costumes, even since I was a kid. I know it’s typical for people to say that recently, but it’s true.

I’m 27 and I had to leave when a minor league baseball duck mascot looked at me too hard.

Ahh yes, the days of custom decorated sheet cakes! I remember them fondly. Thanks for sharing, James!

  • August 2, 2011 at 8:26 am

My mom made me a Ninja Turtles birthday cake for one of my birthdays. I think it was Michaelangelo’s head or something. But I feel like one year there was a full turtle too.

Such a big part of my childhood :)

It’s clear to see you got your interest in film making very early!

  • August 2, 2011 at 8:46 am

    Holy crap… I had a Turtles cake for my 10th birthday too… I actually had two… a Michelangelo one and a Donatello one…

  • August 2, 2011 at 9:18 am

Gah, I remember my TMNT cake as well. It had Raphael on it, my favorite turtle.

    Great memories haha.

I clicked to see if any new AVGN episodes were out since the last one was more of a discussion on how to make a video rather than an actual avgn episode. Found yet another turtle related video. While I know a good many people get on here and have nothing but praise for whatever is posted, a good chunk of audience is starting abandon this website as they see what appears to be lack of support for AVGN, the bread and butter of this website. I know there is a movie in the works, but how about some of those short scaled down AVGN episodes that were discussed instead of turtles, turtles, overanalyzers, and turtles? Before anyone says “shut up, this is free, be happy with what there is!” keep in mind advertising revenue is based off how many people visit this website. I have also purchased cinnemassacre games and apps for the ipod touch. Isolate your audience, and you lose your audience. Right now a large chunk is being isolated I am afraid.

thats fucking hilarious. i remember going to mcdonalds and they had people in costumes, i tried to crawl up grimaces the purple guys suit cause it was a giant cone. he stepped on me, i started crying and he fell. LOL

I was only 4 at the time of that year, the early 90′s were awesome, things like Ninja Turtles and Sonic were the best. But then it all went shit in 1997 when I had to go to Secondary School which I hated so much because work was harsh and there were evil bullies trying to get me, it pretty much was the end of my childhood.

It’s true that the things we loved as kids is the only way we can relive our childhood as adults and funny enough there’s probably things from the 90′s we missed out and discover later as adults like Rocket Knight Adventures for the Mega Drive which I’ve never played until I went college.

    August 2, 2011 at 10:32 am

While I understand what jivebob is saying, I think what needs to be said is that AVGN pulled a lot of people into Cinemassacre but I feel it’s important to point out that throughout the time of getting to know AVGN then Board James, YKWB, and the many other videos you’ve shared with us, a good chunk of your audience have become “James” fans as opposed to just AVGN fans. Its completely fair to point out that some people are less content than others with these other videos.. but it can’t really be helped. I’m sure you have a lot going on, I caught your voice right away on TGWTG Surburban Knights (great job btw!).

basically while I can understand some people are not satisfied, I understand more that James has a lot of things that he’s doing and has his own life as well. It’s clear to point out that I am a James fan in general, so fans similar to me are content. But this movie is going to be awesome, so I hope you will give him the chance to show us what he wants to do.

btw.. who was the man in the suit? was it ultimately a family member, or someone hired? cute video all the same, I love looking back at when life was much more simple than now.

    COWABUNGA CAKE!

  • August 2, 2011 at 10:38 am

    @jivebob
There is a new AVGN episode once a month. We kicked off again with July’s episode “Barbie (The Making of).” August’s episode will be soon, usually they go up the first Wednesday.
In case you didn’t know, the turtle videos are every TUESDAY, and they’re winding down.
Not to mention, did you see Ninja Baseball Batman? That was a bonus game review for you. Appreciate the support, but yes I am trying my best.

  • MadGamer

    August 2, 2011 at 10:52 am

AVGN is awesome, but I love all the videos here. Especially the Turtles videos. You kickass James

  • August 2, 2011 at 10:55 am

@JiveBob: You’re 100% wrong there buddy. The majority of his fans are not just up and leaving because he’s not whoring out enough AVGN episodes to satisfy his AVGN only fans. He gets hundreds of visits and comments every day. If you’re not happy with what James, well you’re always free to take your self elsewhere.

@James: Don’t worry about one little complainer who is trying to tell you do more AVGN or lose your paycheck. He’s obviously just not that into your work and only likes to come around when AVGN episodes are available. You’re doing what makes you, and us real fans, happy. Other people like thatguywiththeglasses.com and thecinemasnob.com do all different kinds of things and they get loyal hits, as well as mouthy gits like you do, so don’t pay no neverminds to them cause you’re just bowing down to what the negative trolls around here want from you, complete control. Wednesday will be here soon. We all know you usually do it the first week of each month, so it’s obvious he [Jive Bob] doesn’t come around often enough to see what you do. Keep up the great posts James. I love Turtle Tuesdays. Maybe after this you can do a Comics Thursdays about the TV series Marvel, DC and other comic book companies had in the 80s and 90s. Do reviews of what you thought about them when you were a kid growing up. There were quite a few of them.

  • PorkFrydRice

    August 2, 2011 at 10:59 am

That has got to be the scariest Ninja Turtles costume I’ve ever seen in my life. I think I would have started crying if he had shown up at my birthday party. This does remind me of the time I used to go to a day camp as a kid during the summer when we went on vacation. A couple of the camp counselors dressed up as Michelangelo and The Shredder. I remember it so well because The Shredder was wearing deck shoes.

  • August 2, 2011 at 11:02 am

@Mr. Vermin: I couldn’t agree with you more. I first discovered James in 2004 when I was looking for a Castlevania walkthrough on You Tube and found the then “Angry Nintendo Nerd”. Through the years I’ve watched every AVGN episode at least a dozen times, and watched everything else he’s posted since. James, as he’s said many times before, is more of a cinema nerd than a video game nerd, that was just a fluke thing he did because friend dared him to do it and after a while it just got to be very addicting for him. As you can tell he wants to do other things because episode 101, as he said before, was really supposed to be the last…at least until after the AVGN movie. I, like you, are a James Rolfe fan, not just an AVGN fan like a lot of people who gripe about his other works are.

  • August 2, 2011 at 11:10 am

Tuesdays have become my favorite part of the week, thanks to the TMNT videos!
Hey I would have been terrified of the guy in the suite. I don’t know if that’s just a thing, but most people seem to be scared of people in costumes. Why do all parents insist on having them?

And also I don’t understand why people come here just to complain about that this isn’t an AVGN video. If it was an AVGN vid it would be pretty obvious, considering the title. So if people only want to watch AVGN, you don’t need to watch the other videos! And it’s TUESDAY, which means TMNT TUESDAY. Not AVGN. So don’t come here every tuesday just to complain.

Keep up the great work James! I always look forward to your videos!

    August 2, 2011 at 11:16 am

The only themed party I had as a kid was a “Dukes of Hazard” party. Everyone dressed up as characters from the show. Even all the parents that were there did too. Had a DoH cake and got pretty much every DoH toy.

@James – you should go back to using “Jim” :)

  • Mr. Vermin

    August 2, 2011 at 11:17 am

@TwistedSpeech: thank you. That’s how it started for me (though admittedly i didn’t see his videos until early 2007) and I really LOVED the AVGN videos. My friends and I would just watch one after another and like you, have watched each one several times. So when things like Board James, YKWB, the movie reviews and now things like OverAnalyzers and Mike’s Game Glitches have been coming out, I’m just grateful to have other things from this team to see. Maybe they aren’t for everyone, but you can’t make everyone happy. But there are plenty of fans that just get James’ sense of humor and will watch for it in anything they can. Though I’ve never met him (but would love to), I feel like James is a friend and he’s sharing his videos and thoughts amongst friends. Maybe that makes me have a bias, but I have no reason to criticize what he’s doing. Anyways, I’m happy to see someone understood and agreed with my comment.

  • jivebob

    August 2, 2011 at 11:33 am

@James thanks for the response…I gotta say that’s just awesome. Seriously that’s awesome. I did see Ninja Baseball Batman, it was good…it wasn’t listed as AVGN but I see what you were saying. While I enjoyed Barbie from a video making standpoint, the episode was more on making videos then the game. I did not know that about the turtles episodes, but now I do…so I apologize for that complaint. I know your spread pretty thin right now and appreciate all your hard work, and while I do enjoy some of your other videos (some of board james, YKWBS, etc…), AVGN is what brought me (and many others) here and what I always look forward to. I look forward to Wednesday. Thanks again for responding, I am still in a bit of awe…really appreciate it.

@TwistedSpeech it’s that very line of thinking that would hurt this website. I come here frequently, I watch other videos, but of course I have my favorites. I purchase AVGN and Cinnemassacre items (I purchased the cinnemassacre app which I was excited to see and texting of the bread.) Since I visit through the cinnemassacre app…I don’t always get a great view as I do here on the computer but I visit none the less. There are plenty of people who share my line of thinking, if we go away thats a lot less people here, and a lot less people to help support what James is doing (I am always looking for new apps from here and checking in to see whats new.) Don’t just assume I am a casual fan or that I hate this website and everything on it, keep in mind we all have an opinion, mine is different from yours. If they didn’t want comments I am pretty sure this option would be removed. I thought I was tactful in how I presented it (to some degree) and avoided jumping to the offensive.

I had a Turtle cake in 1990 too! Mine had Leonardo on it.

  • August 2, 2011 at 11:57 am

Thanks for the all of the TMNT vids, they are really bringing back memories. No one really understands the love for TMNT that didn’t grow up in the late 80′s/early 90′s time period. I just want to let you know I appreciate this, because it’s great knowing there are others out there that enjoy TMNT as much as I did/do.

  • jivebob

    August 2, 2011 at 11:57 am

On a side note, what are the odds of a Cinemassacre channel being added to the roku box? Pretty sure that would be amazing.

  • Faroutdude

    August 2, 2011 at 12:05 pm

haha this video is the shit. I wish i was one of your friends back in the day dude. TMNT was crack for kids

  • August 2, 2011 at 12:09 pm

@Mr. Vermin: I feel the same way. I’m 28 so me and James came from the same generation. I kinda feel like he’s the older brother I never had, I have a sister his age. It’s nice to see that people of our generation cherish the same things because I know there are a lot from my generation that don’t. They’re into all the cool modern things, they don’t care about a lot of things they grew up with and thus I feel a bit disconnected from the others of my generation for that reason. I would say I am extremely nostalgic with one foot in the past and one in the future as well.

@JiveBob: You have a right to your opinions, but not to facts. The facts are this, there are maybe a dozen of you who demand more AVGN, and that would split if they didn’t get what they wanted. Also, this isn’t James’ primary job, like with Brad Jones over at cinemasnob.com. He does weddings and other things as well. That’s where most of his income comes from. Not this website. Now you may come around often and watch many numerous things he posts like I and others do, but that’s not how you came off. You said you were tired of his other non-AVGN posts. Your words, not mine. So as you can see, devoted fans like me take offense to people telling him what he needs to do to keep his fans happy. He left this comments section open for fans to talk about the videos he posts, not to complain that its not a new AVGN episode.

I was 7 years old in 1990 and I was just as much a Turtle fan as you James. I had more action figures then I can remember and played the hell out of TMNT on NES. I remember in first grade I brought some Turtle ooze machine to class for show and tell, those were the days lol I love Turtle Tuesdays, keep up the great videos! :)

  • billpardy

    August 2, 2011 at 12:30 pm

haha i remember having parties like that too, except i was only 2 in 1990 lol.

and as to the debate going on here.

i’m a james fan not a avgn fan…i like all the video’s he posts and am not limiting my enjoyment to one area of his videos.

  • Skeletor

    August 2, 2011 at 12:38 pm

    haha good stuff.

In 1990 I got a VHS with Turtles. But 2 years after that it was not cool to like Turtles.

  • DanCam

    August 2, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Ninja Turtles, yeah I remember those. I am about the same age as you James, I was in fact 7 years old back in 1990. I remember my action figures, the tons of drawings I’ve made back then, the movies (never really understood the 3rd one though) and so on. I really enjoy your short videos about the crappy games. NES era was hard as fuck, but you never reviewed a really crappy one called RENEGADE on NES, please try that one, you will not be disappointed my friend.

  • August 2, 2011 at 12:42 pm

Oh man.. I’m so jealous. I never had a ninja turtle at any of my birthdays, but I did have a couple of cakes over the years with them on there! :-D

  • jivebob

    August 2, 2011 at 12:51 pm

@TwistedSpeech you should check your facts as well, “tired of his other non-AVGN posts” are your words, not mine. I stated I was seeing a lot of other posts that were not AVGN and wanted to see more AVGN (in better detail but that was the gist.) There are far more than 12 of us I guarantee you, and as far as splitting…that makes no sense. If James happened to change the website format and only discussed…lets just say picture frames…I am sure a lot of people would split…that is not what they come here for (including yourself.) These are facts. The comments section could be argued…if I had a complaint about this video and gave some feedback…well that would be a comment about the video…and I am sure you would take offense to that as well. You are trying to hard to defend something I already support and it makes no sense. I am not taking away what he does, I just want to see more of something else that I enjoy that I feel has been slightly ignored. Not every comment is out to spark an argument, its feedback, people use feedback to make things better. I respect the fact that you show so much support for this site, and all James does…but it’s not necessary to police everything posted. The sky is blue, the grass is green, and there can always be more AVGN episodes…these are facts.

    August 2, 2011 at 12:51 pm

This is great! I would have been so embarrassed had a ninja turtle shown up at my birthday party. But probably not as embarrassed as the one time I was out to eat with my family for my birthday and a guy dressed up in a crappy Barney (The Purple Dinosaur) costume happened to be at the restaurant and came over to our obvious birthday party table to say hi and pose for pictures. It wasn’t planned or anything but I am sure that my parents got a kick out of how ridiculous it all was.

I am actually going to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles this Friday night in the movie theater!

    1) That Turtle will be in my nightmares for the next week. Thank you.

    2) Make your movie, don’t worry about AVGN, your other videos are UH-MAZING. I watch all your videos everyday on my lunch. AVGN got me here….everything else keeps me here. I suggest Top Ten, my faves!

Keep it up! I love being entertained by you. :) Fan – 4 – Life

  • August 2, 2011 at 2:06 pm

@jivebob: You’re right about what you exactly said, but you made the jist that you didn’t seem to care for what other things he has been posting lately. By the way, if you had followed James as closely as you say then you would know very well for about the last year or so James has reduced AVGN to one post a month because it became too taxing on him. Like I said, this is NOT his primary job, and not what he originally created the site for. The site is called cinemassacre.com not angryvideogamenerd.com. He’s always shown videos of his other interests, and more so now since he has been able to relax a bit on overdoing it with the AVGN episodes that take up a good chunk of his time. Which for the majority of us we like. I watch his comments very closely. There is only handful of you that gripe about not having enough AVGN. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism, lord knows I’ve given James a piece of my mind once or twice, but I’ve never once told him that he needs to do more of this or less of that, such as yourself. James has a lot to go through to make what he makes. So yes, he does need some people to police his site because we’ve seen in the past how harsh people can be and it’s not the kind of criticism he needs. There’s giving him critiquing to make better videos. Then there’s criticizing because someone who doesn’t show up on a daily basis, like a good share of us, decides to tell him to make more AVGN episodes because they think he is neglecting their favorite online show. James already said in his video just before the “Making of AVGN/Barbie” episode that episode 101 was really supposed to be the end of the AVGN series because he already done all he could with the Nerd and wanted to move on to other things and finally get to the AVGN movie. You came on here, walking blindly into one of his posts, and obviously haven’t been watching on a regular basis because you would have already known all of this and no asked about where more AVGN episodes were and all that jive talkin’, which James had to needlessly update you on because you obviously don’t visit as often as you say you do.

  • DanCam

    August 2, 2011 at 2:32 pm

To Jivebob and Twisted, guys, please stop it. I don’t come here to see 2 people trying to convince each other about who is right and who is not. For all I care, James can take the fucking time he wants to pull out his stuff. Since he has a lot more to do then just the AVGN ones. I would like him to do more but everyone has their priorities in life and so do you and I. Just enjoy whatever he has to offer whenever he feels like it. I won’t stop coming just because of that. A lot of credits goes to Mike Matei as well. So, thanks James and Mike, keep up the good work! No offense guys.

  • August 2, 2011 at 2:58 pm

@DanCam: That’s the point I’ve made numerous times. We come here for what James offers. AVGN is a small part of that.

  • Inkrypted

    August 2, 2011 at 3:20 pm

I am curious about a couple of things.
    1. When did you first meet Mike?
2.When did you start doing the AVGN Series.
Thanks for showing this. It’s kinda like a behind the music special.

  • August 2, 2011 at 3:43 pm

    @TwistedSpeech
Actually, I think I recall James saying that he was going to be making more episodes during the production of the AVGN movie. He said they were not going to be as great as his newer videos, rather, they are going to be like the earilier short ones. He’s doing this so that we won’t become impatient about the movie.

  • krisz

    August 2, 2011 at 7:08 pm

This reminds me of a birthday i had during the 90′s. I can’t recall much of it, but my mother made some buns formed as turtles, so they were green and looked like turtles lying on the table. did we eat them? apparently no, why? they were green and didnt look like buns usually do ..stupid kids! Now I would say that was an awsome idea and pretty cool for your mother to make something look like something you just love…The Turtles!

The whole situation with Leonardo in you back yard, well, reminds me of yet another birthday. Remember that we usually went on treasure hunts for the birthdays and recall one time we had such a one. One of the parents told os to eat some of the food, if we wanted to be ready to confront some random named gang of thugs. Yep, it was just intended as a motivational thing for us…I remember being scared when she said that. So yep, I was instead scared before going out to that treasure hunt. Think it is just the difference between adults and children. As an adult I can see why they wanted to say, or do, those things. But as a kid…well..sometimes you just think otherwise and actually believe it to be true…or find it extremely odd what they were thinking! “Did you like meeting Leonardo?” “NO! I was fucking scared!”

I can agree on you’re statement: All it took to be happy was the Turtles! nothing more, nothing less, just Turtles. They were just awsome!!

“Hey Kid! eat shit…” You always make me crack up with the onliners James! Just love it!!

This right here is what explains AVGN’s popularity. Sure the kiddies like all the poop jokes and foul language, but for us in our late 20′s it’s memories like this.

My wife doesn’t get how I can watch his videos over and over again. I tell her, it’s because the guy makes videos expressing exactly how I felt as a kid growing up with a Nintendo. A lot of the games were shitty, we were just too young to know any better and now to see this guy come along and “take us back to the past” in a way no one else can, is just like being a kid again. Who didn’t throw thier controller playing Top Gun? Who didn’t rent X-Men and was disappointed, but tried to play it anyway? Who didn’t spend hours reading Nintendo power?

And it’s not just the AVGN videos, but also videos like these. When James released his “Dragon in My Dream” video I knew it was personal for him. It was how a film maker delt with turning 30. James and I are the same age and this came out a few months after I too turned 30 and it also hit home with me. Losing that playground was simbolic of all of us 30 year olds who are learning to let go of our childhood.

Again, James has hit the nail on the head with this video. I turned 10 in 1990. I too, like many of you out there, was obsessed with the Ninja Turtles. I too was wearing a tmnt tshirt and all my friends knew to give me turtle action figures as presents. The highlight of that birthday was when my parents tricked me by hiding tmnt2 for the nes in a shirt gift box. I flipped out, ran to my room with my friends and started playing. Party over.

My point is, this is my personal thanks to James for all the great memories he´s brought back. I don’t know him personally, yet I feel like I’ve known him my whole life. I wish him all the success in the future and hopes if he ever does stop making videos, it’s only because he’s in Hollywood making movies.

    Thanks James.

My dad took me to the playhouse in the city to see “the turtles”. I was so excited, even though in the back of my mind I was separating the truth from reality i ignored it as much as possible. When I saw them I was disappointed- It’s like seeing Santaclaus at the mall, all the magic in your brain dissipates at the sight of a sorry impostor… you think to yourself “what was I expecting?” but then seeing “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” -the toons interacting with people probably didn’t help but exaggerate my expectations. I know all too well the odd displeasure and wanting to please the rents who you know damn well were making an effort to make you happy.

Aw man, reminds me of my birthday party in 91. I got a Michelangelo cake,
all kinds of turtles swag and whatnot. What’s funny is that my birthday just passed on the 27th, and I got a Turtles cake. Obviously it was meant as a joke, but damn it brought back some memories.

It’s awesome of you to show this stuff to fans. Cowabunga dude.

I was into the Turtles back in 1989 when I had my 10th b-day party, and I had dozens of action figures, but the parents wouldn’t spring for a themed party, bastards! I would have been happy for some old dude dressed as Splinter.

However that night, between vain attempts at taking on Ninja Gaiden my friends and I did get to witness my cousin beat Castlevania, probably the only time we would ever see the end without Game Genie or the internets.

awwww man.. James dont bother reading these worthless complaints, sure jivebob apologized but hes still a dick. complaining never solves anything. and responding to complaints just make it worse. only the true fans will be here in the end. cinemassacre isnt about AVGN, its about being a nerd and talking nerd shit, overanalyzers is a great example of that.

  • August 3, 2011 at 6:49 am

@Kilgore: You are right on point. : )

  • August 3, 2011 at 6:52 am

@Henry Squirrelman: Watch the video about him returning the AVGN episodes. He said he was having a hard time getting it out of pre-production so he was going to bring back shorter versions of AVGN. Before that, he did say episode #101 was going to be his last, but because of the demand from fans he was going to bring it back at least until he gets the movie into production.

Let James weigh the feedback.

It’s true about scraping the bottom of the barrell with this. I really do like most of James videos, but this is just stupid. Most of us are fans of The Ninja Turtles or The AVGN, Not the life of James Rolfe. Do we really give a crap about his 10th birthday party, even if it was a TMNT Theme?

  • Mr. Vermin

    August 3, 2011 at 10:31 am

people who are fans of James Rolfe himself and not just his videos would say yes. I loved his videos about his old haunted house and seeing his first video games. He’s come to do really amazing things with this website, so yes, for me its cool to see these snippets of his life that he’s sharing, and feel the nostalgia from it. They may not be for everyone and you’re entitled not to like something, but others do. His whole life is not just about making these huge productions each week to put on here.. I think its just nice to see what he shares and I’ll always be back to see more. /2 cents

    August 3, 2011 at 11:59 am

    @Mr.Vermin
That about sums it up for a lot of fans of the SITE and not just the AVGN stuff; personally I thought this video was cool mostly because of the fact that it’s highly personal. It takes balls to post something like this for the public to see…then again, we have all these people saying they “don’t give a shit about the life of James Rolfe” etc etc.

All I gotta say to that is: Be patient, more AVGN WILL be coming soon enough (obviously). Beyond that, yes you ARE entitled to your opinions and you are most certainly NOT obliged to like this personal stuff that he posts. But you know what? Acting like an asshole and posting disrespectful comments warrants disrespectful replies too.
    -nuff said

  • jivebob

    August 3, 2011 at 12:24 pm

@BernietheShredder well said. The problem is, any opinions posted that aren’t pure praise are often taken as hateful and insulting. People feel they need to jump to Jame’s defense whenever someone makes a comment that may not fall in line with “that was the best thing I ever seen” There are a lot, and I don’t think I can emphasize this enough…A LOT…of people who share Torus202′s opinion…I don’t completely agree but I can see his/her point. What some people don’t understand is that not everyone can be a hardcore daily visitor of this site. Many (if not most) people came here because of AVGN. While it’s easy to say “Don’t listen to those jerks James, your not going to lose fans they can just go elswhere”…those people don’t understand that casual fans, AVGN fans, etc…, while not your hardcore daily visitors, are still fans and still help generate revenue and spread the word. Common sense says most people who visit here stop by occasionally to see if new AVGN episodes are posted or possibly a few other topics they enjoy. Being casual visitors, they are probably less likely to leave comments which is why you don’t see as many asking for AVGN as you would otherwise. If they don’t see what they want, they leave. If it continues to happen, they check in less frequently. Eventually, they stop checking in. Regardless, I am willing to bet, and this goes for any site, there are far more casual visitors than daily hardcore visitors. It isn’t logical to run those people off when they are helping to generate revenue. I commend those who check in daily (I check in frequently myself, maybe not daily, but frequently)…but I am not going to fool myself into thinking there are more people who are on this thing 24/7 than those who check in maybe once a week. I wish continued success for James and what he does, as most visitors probably do, regardless of frequency.

  • August 3, 2011 at 3:11 pm

@jivebob: No one here is sucking up to James. Especially not me. I’ve criticized James’ work before. But only when I thought he was not giving it his all, which he has admitted to not doing once or twice. Second, I didn’t see that comment about scrapping the bottom of the barrel until recently. If they don’t like what he puts out they can get to steppin’ as well. It’s not going to hurt James or his loyal fan’s feelings one bit. I’m sorry if you think you were not being out of live telling James to hurry up and make more AVGN, but where do you get off even asking him to. He does what he wants, and he puts it out when he feels it is ready. Sure, we’d all like more. And from time to time we do ask when the next one is coming up, but we don’t go telling him that many of his fans will leave if he doesn’t start putting out more to our liking. Sorry, but you do come off like a jerk when you talk like you do. That’s why James responded to you as well as me and others. I hope you are done complaining cause I know I’m tired of reading and feeling like I have to say something so that you understand this is a place for Nerds who like what other Nerds put out. This may be the home of the AVGN, but that is most certainly not his primary course for this website. Dig?

  • August 3, 2011 at 3:15 pm

@Torus202 & Calavera: If you don’t like it, then just walk away. No one is holding your feet to the fire. We enjoy what James posts because it shows where his creativity came from and what makes his talents unique to him. So again, if you or anyone else doesn’t like what James posts then just shut your trap and leave. Go find something else to do instead of sitting around your computer and bitching about free entertainment.

@ TwistedSpeech. I enjoy a lot of James’s stuff other then AVGN. I would not have joined Cinamassacre if I didn’t. The thing you don’t seem to understand is other people have opinions that differ. I watch all James’s Vids because most of them are cool and or funny. When one isn’t however, I have every right to comment on what Shit it is.

Why Does James play shitty games if he hates them so much? It’s the same thing. Deep Down I enjoy his videos, but every once in a while one of them is utter garbage. This happens to be one. Sorry if I’m not an ass kissing follower of James Rolfe.

Take your own advice, if you don’t like other people’s opinion, then don’t read them. Just read the mindless crap that compliments every thing James does.

I see all these critiques of some of these vids, this one in particular. What I don’t understand is why some of you are getting your panties in a bunch? James went way out of his way to share his childhood photos and you pretend like he is required to turn everything into some enormous production job.

Seriously, I myself would only share maybe one photo of my childhood. But James was courteous enough to let us in his personal childhood memories and probably shared every single photo of his birthday party.

But like a gold diggin bitch, the driver isn’t worthy if the car he’s riding in doesn’t have big shiny fucking rims. And for you morons the analogy is shiny rims = an over the top production for a slideshow.

  • August 4, 2011 at 2:18 am

This reminds me of my 9th birthday, only there was no Leonardo, and I was probably better off, but there was a lot of Madonna playing on the tape deck. I have video my 1990 birthday as well, and sure enough, plenty of kids running around, not even acknowledging the still camera in the background filming them, even while we played volley ball in the driveway. I too went over to the camera to adjust it at one point (I was getting into video taping things then and even ran a short scripted show called Science Hall with special guest “friends”). I distinctly remember someone getting me a turtle figure that year and someone else getting me the same one, which caused great distress. I still have that double in the box under my bed, but the Pizza Points are missing.

I dont think hes scraping the bottom of the barrel at all, the dude is just busy. i find all this stuff entertaining cause i respect the man and his opinion. when it comes to movies, games and nostalgic shit he knows what he likes and hates and i can relate to it… kinda like how im sure he does the same thing i do when i scroll through this comment section and silently mutter “bitch and whine, blah blah blah, sandy vagina and beyond”

  • August 4, 2011 at 7:47 am

I think this place is sort of turning in a “Jamestown” (forgive the pun, or dont, I dont give a fuck) or cult-of-James where it’s become more about his ouvre (which, considering his age and amount of content released, is relatively small) which is just feeding into the mythology of his persona. Motherfucker Mike is just an apostle of this cult, his minister of propaganda (again, for give the blunt analogy, or go fuck yourself, either/or) and does a very admirable job buts it’s very much in service of the mythology, that will eventually pay off in dividends when he reaches Hollywood, which sure as shit he will. I see what he’s doing, and am duly impressed, and have become a fan in the process. But, as jivebob mentioned earlier, sparking a firestorm of protests and a response from the head-honcho himself….many people, including myself, became a fan because of AVGN, not inspite of, and this nearly endless backlog of home videos and notes and scribblings and various other scraps of nostalgia kinda of makes me wonder if he really believes in any of it at all. It’s almost like a guy who’s winding down….looking back on a life very amply lived and enjoyed, instead of mapping his conquest of the future. There’s a tinge of sadness to it. And like I said, it’s too damn early for these profound rehashings, these Kane-like meanderings in search of his ‘youth’. Dude, you’re 31. It’s too early for memory lane. Plus there should be a healthy degree of mystery to the mythology. Instead there is a constant barrage of musings on the past (his past), left for the majority of us X-Y geners to fill in the blanks with our own memories…..the whole enterprise kind of smacks of morbidity and bloated self-interest….which I guess is Hollywood anyway…..but there WILL be a time James where you will be absolutely fucking sick of yourself and wish, hope, pray for anonymity….when you reach that point, there nowhere left but to look back. Now is not the time.

Anywho, love the site, it’s awesome as ever, and will watch everything you do……regardless of the subtext.

Holly crap, some people in here likes to steal the show by writing freaking long and useless/boring messages. Seriously, the hell we care about all the things you say. Sorry, but I hate people who think are more intelligent by mustering a cluster fuck of words that they think will make them more intelligent than the average man. I know that people have the rights to give their own opinion, but we don’t necessarily have to agree with them. That is why it is important to have a life and not judge the other ones. Peace

  • August 4, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Really? This is a slideshow of a birthday party — lighten up!

The thing James does so well is to adress what he was thinking as a child and it makes me relate. That’s what I enjoy the most with the things he posts here and I was a rabid TMNT-fan when I was young, so the child in me’s actually a bit jealous of this party.

Sure, I’ve reacted too. It’s been A LOT of TMNT-related stuff lately, but it’s good. I enjoy the Fonto-comics too as I made my own comics as a kid.

Not everything on Cinemassacre.com strikes my fancy, but I’m not paying for it either so I choose to enjoy the gold and not adress the rest.

Personally, I liked this one because I’m around James’ age and I remember these sorts of backyard birthday parties. There’s a lot of sentimentality on the internet for the cartoons and stuff we used to watch, but it’s still uncommon to find actual footage from that time. It’s also great to find someone who’s grown up and is also interested in trying to make sense of it.

I had a turtles themed party when I was a kid too, just can’t remember my age. I am sure my mom has it on camera somewhere.

I remember for my 4th birthday party (1994), I had a Power Rangers birthday cake with Jason on it! I probably would have flipped out if a Power Ranger had showed up to our house. Might have been a much easier costume to put together than a Ninja Turtle though!

I can’t believe I missed this video the first time around!
Ah, ninja turtles parties. I remember this one turtles themed party I went to when I was a kid. The family had hired face painters and of course we all wanted to be ninja turtles but the freakin’ face painters didn’t have any green paint! What the hell?? Who doesn’t bring green paint to a ninja turtles party! I remember thinking how stupid that was and I was only like 5 or 6. Haha. Wow. Thanks for the memories!

I was never luckly for anything like this. And I really hate my birthday for the last 7 years but that another story that I don’t want to talk about.

That’s awesome James, all about the memories! This was probably a common scenario especially when TMNT was at the height of it’s popularity.

Your parents are awesome dude. Sure the costume is messed but they tried. I fn loved The Ninja Turtles man. It was 1990: Grade 4, age 9 and my height of lovin’ The Turtles. Year of The Rooster man, you know what I’m sayin’. You rock!

I really enjoy your old videos. I grew up in the 90s but my memory is really hazy so its great to see from other people’s perspectives the world around me.

James, I had a similar encounter around this time like you did at your birthday. I went with my parents to a grand opening of a Blockbuster Video in my hometown when I was around 5, and they had employees in huge Ninja Turtle costumes walking around and greeting customers. They were so big and overwhelming they freaked me out!! And I love the boys in green just as much as you do, haha. Thanks for sharing this video. :)
