Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Tricks & Glitches

Mike / June 15th, 2011

This video has been featured on Zelda Universe and Zelda Dungeon.

Check out these glitches from an N64 classic. Yes, I’m aware there were more glitches in this game. There are so many in Ocarina of Time, this could have been an hour long. I’m just showing some I wanted to do. Maybe I’ll do more later.

Awesome another video! I love it when there are such rapid updates on the site.

Ya i am going to try this shit man i think try the one with no sword and the floating link damn that is fucking epic shit.

    June 15, 2011 at 1:39 am

Looks like this is going to be an awesome new segment! I’m totally trying these on the new 3DS Ocarina of Time first, then the N64 version.

awesome video! i knew about the swordless link glitch, but the rest is pretty much new to me.

i used to be pretty into zelda oot glitches. there’s the cartridge tilt glitch that will let you get to hyrule without a sword or a shield, there’s a way to clime up onto a hill by hyrule castle where you can fall into the abyss, all sorts of shit. i remember reading about one where epona is just pretty much underground with her head sticking out, but i don’t think i got that one to work. oh, can’t forget about the turning all your items to bottles glitch!

  • June 15, 2011 at 1:44 am

    Yay for us motherfucking cheaters!!!

  • June 15, 2011 at 1:47 am

    That was awesome!

  • June 15, 2011 at 1:49 am

That ‘no sword’ one looks like it’s pretty fun to play around with.

  • kk__

    June 15, 2011 at 2:02 am

im a little dissapointed because for the fact its not an AVGN episode, but its still ok

  • Gorlokk

    June 15, 2011 at 2:04 am

    Best glitch video yet! Imo.

  • trojan12kelley

    June 15, 2011 at 2:08 am

Wonder if these glitches still work in the Gamecube versions of OoT?

  • SmashManiac

    June 15, 2011 at 2:14 am

@trojan12kelley: Not all of them. In fact, about half of these bugs can’t be reproduced even on the Nintendo 64 if you don’t have the right version of the game.

  • chrisbg99

    June 15, 2011 at 2:16 am

I don’t think the using the bottle to repel Ganon’s attacks is a glitch. Since you can do the same thing with the butterfly net and Aghanim’s magic attacks in ALttP.

The rest of those are amusing and neat. Especially the hookshot one.

This isn’t even scratching the surface of the amount of glitches in Ocarina of time, the game is practically a broken down mess. He didn’t mention

    The Bomb/bombChu Hover
    the Infinite Superslide
    The Bottle Adventure
    the Reverse Bottle adventure
Beating the Shadow and Spirit Temples before the other three, allowing you to skip much of the game
    Leaving the Kokiri forest early.
    The Secret Color Gauntlets
Stealing the fishing rod (part of the Bottle Adventures)
Using the master sword as a kid

there are ALOT more glitches than that. This video beckens for a follow up.

  • DFatman

    June 15, 2011 at 4:02 am

Im surprised mike that you forgot to bring up the bottle crating glitch and that you can do the golden skullca glitch at any of the whole that contains a golden skullca. There a few other glitches you didn’t bring up aswell.

  • Valis77

    June 15, 2011 at 4:07 am

this is his best glitch video by far

  • encey

    June 15, 2011 at 9:57 am

Awesome — I didn’t know about most of these. The intro is great, too. Keep it up!

I thought the longshot was about to bring Link over, horse and all.

The ‘what the fuck is that about” and “what’s he doing?” parts sound really scripted. When the AVGN encounters a glitch, they sound more genuine because that character is just trying to play the game normally, so they’re not ‘expected’. When MFM does it, we’re expecting a glitch.

Noting that they’re cool or interesting etc would fit better I think. Then again, I think this is almost worthy of it’s own show context, instead of the odd video. Just need to shape the character into something. Really the Gremlin would be ideal, shame he’s a whole other person.

  • MAZZ0Murder

    June 15, 2011 at 10:09 am

A knew about a few of these, but never knew how to actually do them…Really cool video!

  • Devin

    June 15, 2011 at 10:10 am

Note: The way he does the swordless link glitch in this video can only be accomplished in version 1.0 of the game which is the golden cartridge. There is way to do it in 1.1/1.2 (Grey cart/VC) but its much more in depth.

Want to see some other fucked up glitches in OOT? Watch a speed run. Specifically the one by pokey. He does every major glitch in it. I won’t spoil them but let’s just say the game is broken as hell.

  • June 15, 2011 at 10:18 am

Great video! I really like the intro.

    June 15, 2011 at 10:40 am

  • June 15, 2011 at 10:41 am

Pretty good video, I didn’t know these glitches !
ANd I really like the new intro !

  • PorkFrydRice

    June 15, 2011 at 10:43 am

Very cool episode, makes me wonder if any of these glitches will still exist in the 3DS version of the game coming out or maybe that game will get an entire new list of glitches to play around with.

  • MandTgames

    June 15, 2011 at 10:44 am

there is also a glitch in the water temple. go there get on the first ledge you see. walk around until you find another ledge that has one of those water raising signs on the wall next to it. then try to jump on that ledge. most of the time link will go ape shit. try it out.

    also nice new intro

  • mrderp109

    June 15, 2011 at 10:45 am

i got around 80 of the golden spiders and my save file for sum reason got deleted so imma try that glitch to get the infinite amount of them lol,

man that last glitch is amazing lol flying around hyrule with the hookshot

  • Tinwe

    June 15, 2011 at 10:46 am

I didn’t know any of these, but the thing with the walking through the wall or falling through the floor creeps the shit out of me. I hate this stuff (I too hate moving dead bodies, which follow me by hovering on the floor).
The only, well, you may not call it a glitch, I used was in the ice cave. When you are in the room with the spinning frozen knives, get on top and look at the middle part that’s turning the thing. If you press Z to target then, you will look Link right into the eye before targeting the knob.

But I admire your golden gamecase! In Europe it was released as a plain gray one with a black and golden sticker on it. Majora’s Mask I have as a golden one.

  • June 15, 2011 at 10:49 am

Just wanted to say that heart at the cow can be obtained via flying a hen also (if Im not mistaken)

Why doesn’t anybody at least look into learning the correct pronunciations? Grrrrr!

    Deku = DEY-koo
    Gerudo = geh-ROO-doh
    Goron = goh-ROHN
    Hylia = HAHY-lee-uh
    Kakariko = kah-kah-REE-koh
    Kokiri = koh-KEE-ree
    Ocarina = ok-uh-REE-nuh
    Sheikah = SHEE-kah
    Skulltula = SKUHL-chuh-luh
    Zora = ZOHR-uh

Candle sniffing fuck fence! Go climb a wall of dicks!

He’s the angriest linguist you’ve ever hearrrrrd. He knows the correct pronunciation of made-up worrrrrds. He’s the angriest, most pissed-off language nerd. He’s the Angry Word Nerrrrrd!

  • kaykeyser

    June 15, 2011 at 11:25 am

Like many games of the era, this is one ware I was able to glitch the game by breaking threw the invisable wall and fall off the map, in to random other locations. for esxcample, there is a wall in the village, hover boot + chicken your way to the top, drop the chicken and hammer off the wall, you;’ll fall off the map.

You should include links in the description to where people can find more of these glitches. Such as DavidWonn, TASvideos and Zeldaspeedruns.
    Just a tip.

@ officialjab – I always thought that those phrases were simply part of Mike’s super dry sense of humor.

That said, yay for the Game Glitches series getting its own intro!

Man the Glitch Gremlin is getting his ass handed to him.

  • June 15, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Liking the new intro to the show Mike. You oughta start up some kind of nerd sidekick series while James is working on the movie, maybe it’d keep all the raging impatient fans at bay haha

  • dbzelda

    June 15, 2011 at 1:19 pm

okay I know this glitch seems a little unreal but it totally isn’t it takes a while though as you have to start preparing for the glitch when your still kid link but it lets you change the color of your gauntlets black, blue, green, and red, green is the easiest to get(that’s the color I got) but here’s a link to the video it’s about ten minutes and the glitch takes a good while but it’s awesome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjj8Qjff80U

  • supercrapnstuff

    June 15, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Mike, you seem to own the gold version which was the original version, they’ve updated the game officially to 1.2 (most grey cartridges) do you know if these glitches work? i’ve heard the swordless link glitch doesn’t work

  • Aristotelles

    June 15, 2011 at 1:46 pm

    Motherfuck Mike!

  • June 15, 2011 at 2:06 pm

u still look like the headless horsemen from the Sleepy Hallow Movie!

  • Alldayspecial

    June 15, 2011 at 2:22 pm

Not to be a picky jerk or that guy, but you forgot to make mention of the graveyard glitch where you pretty much glitch yourself to blow up near moving bombachus to launch you up on the mountain border. This can allow you to walk to the shadow temple, glitch into it and get the hoover boots and do other parts of the dungeon. Theres also the chicken glitch that allows you to grab an angry/frightened one and you can glitch into the graphics into the well mini dungeon. Lastly theres the temple of time glitch which virtually allows you to roll through empty space graphic and you can get into the sword room and procede to being adult link. The reason for the hoover boots is to screw around and glitch yourself over to ganon’s castle. Pretty much what I just summarized is what all those cheating idiots on youtube post when they say they can beat the game in like 2 hours, obvious it’s not a legitimate speed run since it’s all hacks, but the vids are worth checking out the glitches. Ok I’m done with the soapbox

  • June 15, 2011 at 3:09 pm

I love the glitch noise in the intro. Is that your original recording? If so, you should do a glitch noise album. Believe me, there is a very real niche market for it.

If not, please tell me where it came from.

    Stay awesome, motherfucker.

There are so many glitches in this game. There are so many in Ocarina in Time that this could have been an hour long. You must be just showing the ones that you wanted to do. You should do more later.

  • June 15, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Thank you so much, I could never do the infinite sword glitch/crouch stab one, but this was a really clear explanation and now im kicking ass with Biggoron’s Sword

Sad I can’t do swordless link cause I has grey cart, but Its awesome to see someone actually show the effects of the glitch

    Love your series Mike!

  • June 15, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I was wondering if you guys ever caught the “Hyrule Loach”? Or has everybody done that? I dunno!! ;p I love the hookshot trick!!

  • June 15, 2011 at 5:28 pm

I was never able to do that swordless link glitch… Did it only work with those gold carts?

  • Fei Wong

    June 15, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Oh for the mother fucker love of god, Zelda!!! so many memories man!!
I never knew the first one of swimming on land (But i know the same one for The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion) :P
The bottle reflecting Ghost Ganondorf attacks its a glitch? i always used it, and the one of the infinite sword swiing is ultra awesome!!! if i watech this video in 1999 im sure i would use it every day!
Awesome, just awesome, Shit, anything Zelda execpt CDI is awesome.

  • June 15, 2011 at 5:41 pm

You don’t need the hookshot to get the heart piece by the caged cow. If you talk to Kaepora Garbora on top of death mountain as a kid, he will let you grab hold of his talons and he’ll drop you off on top of the house and you can drop down onto the platform. That’s actually the intended solution.

  • collinbollin

    June 15, 2011 at 5:52 pm

man hayden! i did it the hard way i got a cuckoo up on the target game building and flew over there, i found kebora gabora after i got the heart piece

  • June 15, 2011 at 6:16 pm

  • June 15, 2011 at 6:53 pm

    Loved the video Mike!
Especially hook shot part! I wonder if we could travel through all of Hyrule like this …

  • June 15, 2011 at 7:06 pm

I like this series and I’m no enemy to the curse word but it seems that you’re trying too hard to curse. It just doesn’t seem to fit. Other than that, I like the shows. :-)

  • fireworka

    June 15, 2011 at 7:06 pm

This is just a sad coincidence. I literally JUST tried to play this game (I’ve been replaying it recently) and JUST discovered my N64 broke down sometime in the last week. I was totally depressed and when I opened the browser I saw a big OoT cartridge in the thumbnail. Guess the universe is sadistic that way.

    June 15, 2011 at 10:15 pm

wow, i didn’t know getting that heart container like that was a glitch… that’s how i always got it, even as a kid. I thought it was just supposed to be tricky.

  • June 15, 2011 at 10:30 pm

    You shouldn’t have done that

  • June 15, 2011 at 11:16 pm

This would’ve been helpful back in 99, but here in 2011, the future, this is pointless, and, just being honest here, kinda creepy. MM, you are a smart dude……find some other way to channel your creativity!

i wonder if this glitches will still work in “Zelda’s Collectors edition” (or whatever is called the GC game that has the first 2 Zelda games and both N64 Zelda games) for the GC. Been quite a while since i last played this or Mayora’s Mask.

  • SomeFinnishDude

    June 16, 2011 at 2:54 am

The swordless glitch never worked in my copy. I think there are a bunch of English versions of the game out there with more glitches in the earlier ones. Also in the very first one Ganondorf actually throws up blood instead of green stuff when you beat him in his human form.

  • Crippen

    June 16, 2011 at 4:37 am

Ocarina of Time is a great game, so I can understand why you’d want to make a video out of it. The downside is that it’s SO popular and SO extensively played that all of these tricks have been on the internet for a long time. As a result, this video came across as “Spent five minutes on google and then made a video about it.” I’m willing to bet that there was already footage of all of these on youtube, too. In order to attract views, you’ll need to pioneer a bit more.

It would seem that titles with name recognition but not so aggressive a player base would better fit this series. Also, I’m with the guy who mentioned the language. Harsh language has its place, and I wasn’t offended by your usage of such colorful metaphors, but it’s distracting and doesn’t need to be there. It just doesn’t serve a purpose and as such detracts from the presentation.

    June 16, 2011 at 7:28 am

So many interesting glitches but you forgot the one where you can turn almost every item into a bottle. Grab a fish with a bottle, then drop the fish on the floor, and try to catch it again. As soon as Link starts the swing with the bottle, pause and place another item on the C button where the bottle was, and unpause the game. Link will catch the fish, and if done correctly the item you swapped the bottle with will turn into another bottle. It’s useful to do with useless items like the mask of truth to have an additional bottle.

  • June 16, 2011 at 8:18 am

    @MotherFucker Mike

Awesome work. You mentioned in your last comment not knowing of a good source of where to actually get descriptive advice on glitches in OoT. Check out the single-segment speedrun of OoT you can download on SpeedDemosArchive by Pokey. There is a second audio track in which they do commentary on all the glitches. Also, the ZeldaSpeedRuns.com is a great website with information on every major glitch.

The Glitch series is fast becoming one of my favorite pieces of media that gets put out on Cinemassacre. Sure, it can’t quite top AVGN (for numerous reasons) but it is a *really* excellent effort you’re putting forth here. I used to have a lot of fun just trying to find glitches and the like, and every time I watch one of these videos it makes me embarrassed for everything I missed.

Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next, ya cheating Motherfucker! :)

Oh, P.S.: Employing the glitch gremlin in one of these is imperative at some point.

    June 16, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Thanks Mike, I didn’t know many of these glitches. Gonna try them out sometime! Does anyone know if they work on the PAL version as well? (The only one I did know was the “infinite skulltulas”-glitch, but I used to perform it in another hole, one in hyrule field, near the entrance to gerudo valley if I remember correctly)

Anyway, I have a “glitch” of my own that I’ve never heard anyone mention before. It’s not so much a glitch as it is an annoying game-design flaw actually.. If you forget/skip going to the giant fairy (the one that gives you the fire-spell, outside the castle) and then go directly to the Temple of Time to “grow up”, you wont be able to finish the game because you need the fire-spell in the wood-temple in order to unfreeze the eye that you need to shoot with an arrow. And you can’t go back and get it since Shiek is blocking the thing you put your sword in, in order to go back in time. So you’re sort of “stuck in time”… Happened to me once when I was trying a speedrun, but I won’t make that mistake again!

Thanks again! Great video, great game. (despite of the glitches)
    /kc

Isn’t there a torch in the middle of that room that you can shoot an arrow through to unfreeze that eye?

I used to find all kinds of crazy glitches in a whole bunch of N64 classics I was playing growing up as a kid. From Mario to Zelda, I often unintentionally found some of the funniest, weirdiest, creepiest video-game glitches in history while I usually was screwing around in the game. Haha, good times, good times.

  • staffcarguy

    June 16, 2011 at 5:40 pm

My favorite trick i discovered when playing is if you have the broken 2 handed sword and fight dark link and stab at him he’ll try to stand on the sword but wont be able to since its so small and you can hit him easy.

It takes time and a little patients but you’ll get him with some persistence.

I actually thought you were SUPPOSED to use a bottle to beat Ganondorf at first. Also, you missed the really crazy metaglitches- I haven’t tried it myself, but apparently, if you partially remove the cartridge from the console so only part of the game is ‘connected’ to it, you can walk through walls!

thank you, motherfucker! I’m really liking these glitch videos…makes me wonder just HOW MANY glitches I’ve seen, and passed by, in various video games. keep it up, bro!! ***** (<my five star rating, since there is no way to rate)

    June 16, 2011 at 8:46 pm

A lot of these tricks only work on the 1st/2nd edition cartridges on the N64 — or an emulator with the right iso… The MasterQuest disc (Gamecube) and the Virtual Console version have lots of bug-fixes and such, so most of these do not work…

The bottle trick against Gannon, however ALWAYS works. It’s easier to fight him with the bottle, actually, and you can do it in Twilight Princess as well.

I’m loving this series, Mike… sometimes your swearing is a little out of place and forced, but I really dig what you’re doing here. Thanks.

    Great video otherwise.

About the piece of heart. You know you can aquire it without the hookshot or anything just by using chickens. You have to take one and manage to jump down the house in construction with it,

I was going to mention the multiple bottles trick but someone already covered it.

In watching some speedruns of Ocarina of Time, I know there’s a bombchu trick that lets you float up into the air. It’s a lengthy process but it’s kinda neat if you want to access certain areas you normally can’t reach.

Mike, I will say what I have said in every one of your videos, just more concise this time (I’m sure you remember my 5-6 paragraph statements abot Cinemassacre).

This is easily one of the greatest additions to the site and BY FAR the greatest glitch video series that exists.. (or at least that I’ve seen)

Please keep it up. I wanted to do a series like this years ago but instead of just SHOWING the glitches.. it would explain why they work. If you want a demo of this to add to your show let me know. It can be done quickly, informativeness and bad sas..ly… And it doesn’t have to be me in the videos. Just an ‘informant’ role or something..

My number one favorite thing about these videos though is that.. while I’m a glitch connoisseur, I’ve never seen the overwhelming majority of them… so keep up the good work!

I really love the new Game Glitches addition, but this newest one for Zelda: OOT is the best by far! Really cool stuff I never knew about the game (although, I did know the one about using the empty bottle). Keep it up, Mother Fucker Mike!!!

Also really looking forward to the next AVGN ‘old style’ + all the other goodies James has in store for us!

Long time fan of AVGN, first-time poster here, hi everybody!
Loving the glitch series so far and this one is definitely my favourite to date.
I just also wanted to mention that you don’t need the hookshot or a glitch to get the heart piece in the cage with the cow. After your first visit to the Great Fairy on Death Mountain, Kaepora Gaebora offers to fly you back to the village, and he leaves you on the roof of that house so you can just drop down to where the entrance is.

  • mythologygold

    June 19, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Well Mike Definitely love these Tricks & Glitches videos. Worth keeping up.

On a side note, I just seen the new 3DS version of Ocarina of Time and what a fuckload of disappointment. It’s basically the exact same game rehashed out to make a quick buck in between their next big game. It’s a big middle finger to the fans! They may have smoothed out a lot of block like texture and added design to the backgrounds and such, but as far as I am concerned they basically pulled a Resident Evil Directors cut. OUUUU New camera angles, item, and enemy placement. Big deal. Yes I have seen the Master Quest, that is exactly what I mean. Things like major chunks of the background still look polygon or flat based. The stairs are still as flat as an ants tits. If they were going to rework some things why not everything. I guess I am nitpicking, but when you take games like the first Resident Evil and revamp it like they did with the gamecube, I would expect something similar done here. Everyone has to remember Ocarina of Time was released during the early days of the N64. It was a bit rough. With all the handheld Zelda games why couldn’t they have just made a separate new game altogether.

This is really cool! But here’s what I also found out about OoT:

There are a few versions of the game and they were to fix some of the glitches that you showed us. Here are the versions so everyone knows which glitches work on which version:

    Version 1.0
This is the Japanese version for Nintendo 64. It was also released in North America at launch date and was available for a short while afterward. Most of them were released on Gold Carts; however, there are some Grey Carts of V1.0 as well, which are very rare. This is the only version with a brighter “N” logo in the startup.

    Version 1.1
This version started being produced in North America shortly after V1.0. These are also somewhat rare. The fishing rod glitch which could make Link use items on Epona was fixed. Also the “pause, save, reset” trick used in the final battle to make Link swordless no longer works.

    Version 1.2
This version was produced in North America and Europe quite a while after V1.1. It is the most common version, and the most heavily edited. The glitches removed in V1.1 are still gone, Ganondorf’s blood has been changed from red to green, and Nintendo removed the original Fire Temple chant.

    Version 2.0
This was the GameCube version of the game, released in 2003 as a bonus disc for those who pre-ordered The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The Zelda GameCube bundle also uses this version, as does the Wii Virtual Console release. Some things in the game have been further changed in all regions since V1.2, including the removal of the original Gerudo Symbol, which also has similarities to Islam. The Virtual Console edition seems to be based on this.

    Hope this helped out.

I just wanna say, you can get the heartpiece by the cow after you first get access to Death Mountain (as a child), by going to the top and riding the owl down. He will drop you off at the roof, and you can get the heartpiece by dropping onto the ledge.

There’s actually a glitch to get over the outside wall of ganon’s castle. If you cross the rainbow bridge and jump over to the right you’ll land on a small ledge on the outside of the wall. take your long shot and aim at the top of one the pillars next to you, and it will pull you up then drop you down sticking halfway out of the wall. you can then carefully walk throught the wall to the otherside.

  • June 25, 2011 at 2:05 pm

    Awesome glitches Mike!

Back when I was a young teen playing Zelda OOT, I spent hours trying ridiculous methods to try and obtain the Triforce… (Name your save slot Zelda, go through the game without getting hit, yadda yadda… worse than the Mario 64 “Luigi codes” lmao!)

Do you know of any glitches where you can see the physical Triforce?

That shit would just make my life.

Also does anyone else remember the website The Odyssey of Hyrule, and the 3 month long ruse Ariana (name?) from South America posted about obtaining the Triforce? Going into the desert and finding the Temple of Light? Unfortunately it was all a hoax but good god I’ve never seen something so elaborate.

There’s the left cartridge trick, too. I only did it in the Temple of Time but I’m sure you can do it elsewhere for different results.
A black box pops up that lets you scroll through codes and text, but one part says “I LOVE YOU” in capitals. What makes that spooky is I don’t quite remember anywhere in the game where someone says that so it can’t be dialogue coding. Maybe it’s some kinda secret message? :0

    August 24, 2011 at 11:24 pm

You should do Link’s Awakening on Game Boy, that’s the most glitched Zelda ever!

I even found a glitch that makes the background disappear (that’s it: only sprites on screen). And tuning off the Game boy doesn’t make it go away! (you need to delete the saved game that was used to perfom the glitch)

  • August 26, 2011 at 1:34 pm

    1. having infinite time
    2. Becoming Fierce Deity before the 3rd day and outside of boss temples
    3. (Not Sure if this is considered a glitch or trick)
Getting into the observatory without knowing the bomber code
    4. Riding Epona as Goron Link

And there are many more so maybe you can do some of these in the future I’m sure lot’s of people would love that Mike
