Havent even watched it yeah but im so excited to see this return, shortly after the teenag mutant ninja turtle board games, i was really hoping to see this series make a return! after working a 9 hour shift only to get up in the morning for another 9 hours of work at 8am, this made my night. thanks and keep it up!
I do have to admit, I owned this as a child, wasn’t the game I wanted, it was that one game you did that was D&D based, but never less, I spent many hours of fun with this one game. I wish I knew what had happened to it though. I haven’t seen it in years.
Ah, another fine installment of board James! I really love this series.
This game actually looks like it’d be very fun to try out. Lots of really imaginative aspects, particularly those monster cards. Though the mechanics do seem a little complicated. I wonder if it would be fun to play more than once or if it would get old fast?
I used to have this game when I was little but it was way too complicated to play so I wanted to know how you play it. Board James explained it well but I still have questions.
Now that is a kick ass board game, Board James. I sort of remember that game, but my memory is a little foggy. I think I’ll have to look up that board game’s commercial on You Tube, if there is one on You Tube that is. Thanks for sharing, James. I would love to see more of these and the Bullshit man. Of course I know you can only do so much at a time with AVGN being your primary role at the moment.
@TwistedSpeech Damn you! You beat me to it! lol! Oh well. Interesting looking game. I found the video through http://boardgamegeek.com/ This is a great site. You can find practically any board game you are looking for new or old. Check it out sometime James. It may help you to find one of those lost classics that you would love to relive and do a review on.
I had clearly forgotten all about this game from the “old days” but after seeing the whirlpool it clearly sprung me back into the ad from the decade! AWESOME review of an AWESOME GAME! JAMES = GAMES!
…BTW KTTK WOULD BE AN INCREDIBLE NES HOMEBREW CART FOR ALL U HOMEBREW NES DEVS OUT THERE!
Old school Apple’s difference was the Wizard of Woz… That company GIANT quasi techno-cult that it has become will never be anything without year after year of the same devices w/ minor updates… BTW Anyone want a $10 Iphone 3G? Long live the IIc baby!
This looks pretty great… but the rules seem a little too loose. Like instead of just going for the key, you could have the strategy of just killing everyone till it is just yourself, and then you basically win
Have you noticed that every Board James game so far has some kind of
special device, like a plastic ball or spinner (or eeh…VHS tape)? Many even make use of the third dimension in some way. Well, none of the games I grew up with was like that, I wonder if it’s something typical for American games in general or just a reflection of the ones that James choose to review?
OH MY GOD! That’s my childhood game! I still have it! It’s one of the few games I took with me when I went to live on my own. We translated the game to: “De schat en de sleutel” The treasure and the key.
But Key to kingdom sounds better. I loved the game so much. Of course I won often and my family didn’t want to play it anymore.
The box is covered in tape, trying to get it together. I miss 3 or 4 characters, a few bosses, the bridge pieces and yeah that’s about it. It’s show this game.
My friend had this game. We played it once and fucking loved it. Next time we were over we went to play it again but couldn’t find it. Turned out his mum had given it away because she thought no one played with it. Sooooo devastated.
i actually owned it as a kid. i didnt even play it with the real rules we just fucked around till we got bored lol. now i cant find it anywhere so must have sold it on a fleemarket or something. it still was a cool game tho.
Oh and I played it last year with my canadian girlfriend. So with every trial I had to look it up in the manual (all the trials was in the same book written in dutch). So I had to translate what she had to do. Now she calls it the ‘lag game’ because if you don’t have every trial summed up in your head, you’ll have to wait until you’ve looked it up. I never imagined you would review that board game. My family and I played that game even more often than Monopoly. But then again my dad didn’t like monopoly that much.
I have a strange vague remembrance of this board. Especially those whirlpools. I’m thinking maybe my best friend/next door neighbor had it ( he had every fucking toy that existed) and we fucked around with it, not following the rules.
I would have loved to play it properly, but it turns out that I am surrounded by retards.
Senter, I wish I had a canadian girlfriend, but I’m stuck in the south, where the girls are stupid as fuck.
JAMES! MIKE! ANYONE! What is with this annoying Nexus S phone advert that is sh.ting all over about 60% of your website? Makes it really hard to actually see what I came here to see cos most of the site content is now behind the actual advert! Also can you start posting your vids to YouTube again and linking them in each post so iPad users can actually view your content on none flash devices!
Heh, I had a Finnish version of this game and it seriously was something unique. You had to have at least 4 players to get best out of it and one game could last 2 hours, but man, It’s just damn fun game and a big source of good memories to me.
The Nexus adverts are blocking the left and right hand sides of the screen! I can’t watch the video like this! It’s like this on all the videos on Cinemassacre at the minute!!
I would want to try this game, but you single-handedly caused this game to shoot up in price on Ebay. A few days ago one sold for $3, the only one listed now is over $50.
James, you son-of-a-bitch! I had this game as a kid, and no fucking kids would ever play it with me! Once I pulled the board from the box, the size of the board actually intimidated them, keeping them from wanting to play a game that takes so long to play. Ass-holes! Thanks for bringing back the memories of this incredibly special board-game, though. You definitely had good taste to have owned this master-piece.
Oh hell yes! I saw this stashed away in one of your earlier videos James and was waiting for you to do a review on it.
I got this game at a weedy-weedy as a kid nearly a decade ago, but it had a few missing pieces. I think a character or two is gone and there were only 3 pieces to the bridge, and no dice either, if I recall, but all the cards and the instruction manual was in it.
No one wanted to play, but I still entertained myself with my 10 yr old imagination! I still have it. Actually, it’s in my closet, to my right. I’m looking at it right now! I think I’ll pull it out and have a quick drive down memory lane
Looks like a fun game, but the review seems a bit lacking. I wish it was longer, why not invite Mike and a couple others over to play it, if not for the sake of the review at least. I think if this review was 5 or 6 minutes longer, it would be better, but was cool for what it was. Can’t wait til’ the next Board James video.
Omg was that just a coincedince or did you realy pickt the street fighter 2010 vid on youtube to tag about this because of the tiger uppercuting????
sweet.
wow i actually feel like playing this. too bad kids these days are too anti social to have friends come over to their house and play board games. this generation just wants facebook friends and PSN friends, its honestly pathetic.
Thanx for check this out!! I have this game and I got it from a cheap store. But the value was awesome!!…Thanks for reviewing this and thanks for taking on my request, now all you got is Bigfoot, with all its button mashing bullshizznat!!
This game looks sick! Interesting game mechanics. As much as I love to see these old school fantasy themed reviews, it makes me miss AD&D. AD&D ruled the galaxy.
Nice review, although I don’t think there would be many people who would want to sit down and play it (your friends included James) lol you know its true
James you seriously need to sort out the adverts you’ve got on your site. This current advert for the Nexus phone is eating into the screen so that I can’t see the whole of this message box whilst I’m typing! I’m also unable to see all peoples’ comments and whatever other messages you post up that I’m curious to read. The advert is probably around 2 inches wide and is both sides of the screen, also there doesn’t appear to be anyway to close it down. Please can you sort this out, it’s not cool!
I love dutch soreto, sounds like drunken german ; ) So it was called “The treasure and the sleutel” well I don’t have a clue what sleutel could mean.
Sounds dirty : )
Looks like a great game and I think it’s the first game I didn’t know before from all the boardjames games.
@honkytonk: I’m guessing that “sleutel” is the Dutch equivalent of the German word “Schlüssel”, so it would be key, which would make sense in my opinion, seeing that the game’s original title is “Key to the Kingdom”.^^
And I must say, I somehow gotta get my hands on this game. It looks damn awesome.
That’s to Board James. Always digging up the classics.
Wow! Never thought I’d see this one here. Out of all the board games reviewed here, I own Mousetrap, Dragon Strike and Key to the Kingdom. Key to the kingdom was a very dear game to me when I was a kid due to it being chock full of adventure and semi-scary stuff like skeletons, monsters and demons etc. I always wished I could’ve played as the Demon King ’cause he looked so badass (what with being like 8 feet tall and the embodiment of darkness). I also loved how the board expanded via the whirlpools. Here in Finland, the box art looked different though, so I didn’t recognise the game from the title card before watching the review. Also, in Finnish it was called “Pimeyden Valtakunta”, which means “Kingdom/Realm of Darkness”.
I’d love to see a review on the Biker Mice from Mars game called “Biker Mice from Mars: Take Back the City” which was also very dear to me (it might actually be crap but I just loved the cartoon so much that it didn’t matter )
My ultimate favourite, though, was “Ghost Castle”. http://62.15.226.148/tc/2010/02/08/17446136.jpg
It was head-explodingly awesome with a glow-in-the-dark skull that you dropped into a coffin that made all kinds of crazy stuff happen on the board (kinda like Mousetrap). I’d definitely recommend that you take a look at that.
Hahah wow, never thought I would hear dutch lanquage here xD. I’m Dutch myself, and yes “sleutel” is indeed “key” in dutch. But it’s not drunk german! haha. Loved this episode. I acually played this game alot with my dad, back in the day.
Yeah, great episode! This is the kind of thing I come to watch here, those retro video or board games we all love so much. Not those puny OA crap comentaries. Thanks, man!
Holy Shit this looks fun! I’d love to play this. For some reason it reminds me of Lost the board game. That’s a fun board game too. Anyway, loved the episode!
I have that one in a dutch version too. My cousin used to have it and I was hooked at first sight.
Tried to play it with some friends a year ago, wasn’t that great
I had this as a child and loved it. The German version surprisingly has a totally unrelated title and is known as “Tarralans Traumland” which translates to “Taralan’s Dreamland”.
Highly recommend it – it is as much fun as it looks like.
Man this game looks epic. I could actually see this board game turn into a good Video game now days. Some sort of RPG. You know what, never mind, they would screw it up.

June 10, 2011 at 11:29 pm
I only play this a few times an my cousin’s house but it was lots of fun. A few years back I acquired it for myself as an adult.
June 10, 2011 at 11:30 pm
Hahahaha, sweet! I remember I asked for this game to be reviewed in a past comment. That probably wasn’t the reason for this, but still, thanks a lot.
June 10, 2011 at 11:36 pm
I used to have this game when I was little but it was way too complicated to play so I wanted to know how you play it. Board James explained it well but I still have questions.

Another great video and a prime example of why so many of us love the return of Board James.
Keep up the fantastic work and best of luck getting the AVGN movie done in a timely manner!

Good episode James =)

June 11, 2011 at 7:13 pm
That board game doesn’t fuck around.
June 11, 2011 at 7:32 pm
Wow this game looks awesome!! I’m so jealous that I never got to play this game!
June 11, 2011 at 7:56 pm
Damn, this game have so much stuffs and options, looks realy cool. Great rewiev James!
June 11, 2011 at 8:18 pm
wow, this is one of the most awesome board games i’ve ever seen. i’d love to try it out with a few people.
June 11, 2011 at 9:34 pm
This game looks sick! Interesting game mechanics. As much as I love to see these old school fantasy themed reviews, it makes me miss AD&D. AD&D ruled the galaxy.
June 11, 2011 at 11:47 pm
Nice review, although I don’t think there would be many people who would want to sit down and play it (your friends included James) lol you know its true

James you seriously need to sort out the adverts you’ve got on your site. This current advert for the Nexus phone is eating into the screen so that I can’t see the whole of this message box whilst I’m typing! I’m also unable to see all peoples’ comments and whatever other messages you post up that I’m curious to read. The advert is probably around 2 inches wide and is both sides of the screen, also there doesn’t appear to be anyway to close it down. Please can you sort this out, it’s not cool!

This game was called “de schat en de sleutel” in Dutch!
June 12, 2011 at 3:22 am
I love dutch soreto, sounds like drunken german ; ) So it was called “The treasure and the sleutel” well I don’t have a clue what sleutel could mean.
Sounds dirty : )
Looks like a great game and I think it’s the first game I didn’t know before from all the boardjames games.
June 12, 2011 at 4:59 am

I’d love to see a review on the Biker Mice from Mars game called “Biker Mice from Mars: Take Back the City” which was also very dear to me (it might actually be crap but I just loved the cartoon so much that it didn’t matter
)
My ultimate favourite, though, was “Ghost Castle”.

It was head-explodingly awesome with a glow-in-the-dark skull that you dropped into a coffin that made all kinds of crazy stuff happen on the board (kinda like Mousetrap). I’d definitely recommend that you take a look at that.
Thanks for the review James & Mike!

Btw, here’s the alternate Finnish box art for Key to the Kingdom:

Hahah wow, never thought I would hear dutch lanquage here xD. I’m Dutch myself, and yes “sleutel” is indeed “key” in dutch. But it’s not drunk german! haha. Loved this episode. I acually played this game alot with my dad, back in the day.

2 Board James episodes in back to back months? No complaints here! Board James is one of my favorite parts of this site. Keep up the great work James.
June 12, 2011 at 9:08 am
Excellent review. Its reviews like this that remind me how much I love James work.
June 12, 2011 at 9:58 am
Happy to see a new Board James episode! Hoped Motherfuckin Mike to appear while watching.
June 12, 2011 at 11:00 am
That this game looks awesome. You ever play Settlers of Catan, James?
June 12, 2011 at 11:06 am
Yeah, great episode! This is the kind of thing I come to watch here, those retro video or board games we all love so much. Not those puny OA crap comentaries. Thanks, man!
June 12, 2011 at 11:18 am
That game really looks sweet
June 12, 2011 at 12:38 pm
Well done sir!
June 12, 2011 at 12:47 pm
@honkytonk
I wonder what you’ll think of Danish then, as that is the ‘drunk version’ of Dutch.
June 12, 2011 at 3:00 pm
Wow, never even heard of that one. Thanks James and company’
June 12, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Holy Shit this looks fun! I’d love to play this. For some reason it reminds me of Lost the board game. That’s a fun board game too. Anyway, loved the episode!
June 12, 2011 at 4:54 pm
Wow, I want that!
June 12, 2011 at 5:58 pm
I have that one in a dutch version too. My cousin used to have it and I was hooked at first sight.
Tried to play it with some friends a year ago, wasn’t that great
June 12, 2011 at 7:52 pm
Yeah, never heard of this one. We didn’t seem to have a great collection of fantasy board games here in Ireland when I was a kid :/
This looks like a hell of a lot of fun.
June 12, 2011 at 9:00 pm
Never heard of it, but damn it looks awesome.
June 12, 2011 at 9:42 pm
I had this as a child and loved it. The German version surprisingly has a totally unrelated title and is known as “Tarralans Traumland” which translates to “Taralan’s Dreamland”.
Highly recommend it – it is as much fun as it looks like.
June 12, 2011 at 10:10 pm
That game looks amazing.
June 12, 2011 at 10:22 pm
Look great!!!
June 12, 2011 at 10:52 pm
Man this game looks epic. I could actually see this board game turn into a good Video game now days. Some sort of RPG. You know what, never mind, they would screw it up.
