i remember owning the last game when i was a kid. however, i don’t remember either of the other two. you’re right in saying the art was the best part about it. it was definitely more fun just playing your own game with the figures and vehicles.
Great episode, I thought it wouldn’t be a great episode without a script to really analyze your thoughts on the board games, but I you guys really did a great job without one, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. And whats with the hoodie James, we want the traditional retro cap, or you thought its getting nerdy.
pinkerton if you read this try going to hottopic.com or search for it around online that’s how I was looking for mine, I haven’t bought any yet, but it looks totally awesome
I remember having a game where you would slide the turtles down a cardboard tower, they had little metal balls in their bellies.anyone remember this one?
Oh man, I had the pizza power game too. I don’t think we ever played it correctly. My brother would land on a pizza square, spin to get “Go Anywhere,” and then put himself on another pizza spin another “Go Anywhere,” and just continue the cycle to piss me off.
Weapons and warriors still the best review. I loved that onde the best board james, I love it when the motherfucker guy cheats Board James.
Crossfire also rules
i used to have pizza power when i was a kid but mine was not the same as james mine was like the toon version not the comic version if any one did notice, i cant remeber that flipper thing and also mine was called tmht its strange that europe is different from the U,S on that board game
Never had those board games, but I had a sweet TMNT table hockey game where the turtles and friends hit a pizza puck around. It was pretty damn good for cheap entertainment.
My friend had one turtles game where the character cards had different stats for different skills like punch, kick, etc. When you fought a bad guy you had to choose your attack, and while like Shredder might have over all had better stats you could beat him by choosing the right type of attack.
nice video. But you missed one game I had it til I lost it its called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tower of Doom. It was better then the ones that were shown. if you can find it you should review it.
The Pizza Power game seemed absurdly complicated, especially for little kids to play. I feel like that weird dice flipper thing is one of those cheap board game piles of crap that breaks after a couple uses and then you have to retrofit it with something. No way kids would use it like it’s supposed to be used either. They would totally just mash it like a catapult like you said.
The last game actually came in a version very much like it, but instead the fights where based on stats on cards you held. The different ninjaturtles had different stats.
I remember Shreader as being a badass, which weakness was random for each Shreadercard, while the other turtles had their own abilities.
All abilities did go from 0-100 and where parted in somewhat like:
- Kick
- Chop
- Punch
Etc.
Really nice game that we played a lot in Denmark. Cheers!
I’m from Finland and I’ve never heard of Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. It has always been TMNT here, so it’s not a “Europe” thing, it’s a country thing.
i remember i had the teenage mutent hero turtles board game, the one that is memeory based. i was so proud about it, but when i see your rreview and i look at it as an adult, well yea, its a shity game. but it had the TMNT on the box so that was fine by me back then.
wow, i was such a stupid kid, thanks FSM for growing to be more wise.
You missed the Tower of Doom game. It is pretty shitty too. It is a weird combination of Kerplunk and Plinko where you have to catch the turtles in little scoops!
Man… I remember getting a piece of poster board and making my own TMNT board game. In it, you had to fight Shredder twice in order to win. I had a couple of little plastic army-men-like ninjas that would set on the board on various spaces, and would cycle to another space when a 6 was rolled. If you landed on a space with one of them, you would generally lose a turn in order to fight the ninja that was on the space. There was also a space that world force you to return to Japan on the way back, because you left something behind, and had to return in order to get it back. Overall, it was just another race to the finish game that ended up getting thrown away when the cat peed on it.
Great review James. I know it’s completely off what the video was but I actually remember having several board games as a kid that were based off of R.L. Stine books like A Day at Horrorland and Night in Terror Tower. You have any of those?
I remember that when I was child in Italy there was a board games that was awesome (for me when I was child): it was in a sort of suitcase that you open and became a very long internal 3D map/board. There was figures like in TMHT with all the characters like Footclan’s soldiers and the mousetraps and balls like Fireball Island.
Believe it or not I have another Turtles Board gaem not mentioned here.
Its Turtles Kerplunk, you have a sky scraper which you put miniture plastic swords into, this is placed on a molded plastic sewer system with 4 pipes, You put the turtles and the villains into the sky scraper at the top and take it in turns to pull out the swords, then when you hear one of the characters hit to sewer plastic the person who pulled the sword out then as to predict which pipe the character will come out of. If you get it right and its its a turtle you gain a piece of pizza, if you catch a villain however you lose a piece, and once one has come out if you havent caught them, you put the swords back in and start that piece at the top and go all over again.
The pizza power game has so many opportunities to be a dick. Get your friend all excited about playing his board game, then land on a pizza. Spin to a go anywhere part and then leave and go home. I probably would have been on the receiving end of that joke as a kid though, as I was always the one with the closet full of stupid games no one ever wanted to play.
All this TMNT nostalgia reminds me of when they were all over the market and had a lot of different food/snack products. Its too bad you can’t fit those into a review, but thats a bit impossible. Sadly Im sure you could find sealed packages of the nasty turtle pies and pizza crackers from someone on Ebay, but of course getting botulism for the sake of a review by eating over-decade expired food wouldnt exactly be a desired result.
TMNT board games doesn’t sound like a very good idea. For pretty much any young male focused action show with a big selection of enemies like TMNT, you need trading card games. I know there’s one already but I don’t know much about it, except it’s based on the 2003 Turtles and is nothing special, so I assume it doesn’t have pizza, sewers, April O’Neill, or the Technodrome.
Oh boy I’m 30 and I got the last board game when I was like 10 for christmas and …. my god this game is way too complex for kids seriously, I think we’ve spend like 2 hours trying to finish the game with no clue what we’re supposed to do exactly, you didn’t show it in your video but the instructions were very unclear….. especially for 10 years old kids.
I was playing with my cousins and after 2 hours we said like “fuck that game, we don’t get it” and I threw it in my wardrobe and never touched it again until I sold it for $10 when I made a flea market.
When I was a kid I had the TMNT miniature golf set. It was pretty damn fun actually. It would be neat to see a review of it if James could get his hands on it. I’m pretty sure all of the pieces in my set were either busted or lost within a month or else I’d donate it.
JAMES! Long time fan, first time commenter!
I couldn’t contain myself when a great injustice was done to my favorite turtle, Raphael.
At 0:22, you call him Michaelangelo! Tsk, tsk, James. Tsk, tsk.
I remember when I was younger I bought a tmnt board game. Later when I got home I realized it was packaged without instructions. A game like this had hundreds of pieces, and I never got to play it.
I remember a Ninja Turtles game that was like Kerplunk, where you pulled out swords and turtle marbles fell down and you had to scoop them up when they came out the bottom of this NYC building.
Last game cover =
Splinter is holding a stake saying “there’s a vampire! Get him turtles! Noone is gonna outlive me!”. “But Splinter, that’s Shredder!” Yeah that’s what i said, get him! And drive this stake through his heart! You get pizza!”
Holy Cow, another awesome BJ with James and Motherfucker Mike!
Now, why people say: YOU FORGOT TO SAY, you didnt say this, you didnt say that….MAN! leave the guy say what he wants! if a catchy phrase is not present, bear with it! but dont keep remembering him that!
A man is not great by his words, nor his actions, but for being humble or unpretentious.
Im 30 yrs old,and i remember picking up the last game too.i’m guessing i had to be 10 or 11.i remember playing it with my friends.i also remember that crappy flipper thing and how, frustrating, and stupid it was.that game sucked back then and it sucks today.
What about Tower of Doom? That was the only turtles game I ever saw growing up. I remember playing it a lot but I don’t remember if it was ACTUALLY fun. I hope someone can donate that to you or something, I’d like to see that one reviewed.
I had a TMNT version of Ker-Plunk that I thought was awesome. You could just play with the figures and forget about the game entirely, and it came with a load of swords instead of the sticks. Kick ass game.
We had the TMNT Table top hockey game. I was 6 and my sister was 7 at the time and we had got this during christmas. It was the best gift ever. I think it was broken and our parents trashed it, I’m not sure.
Hey there is a Ninja Turtles board game I used to have, it was essentially Ker-Plunk, but the “marbles” were ball bearings with plastic turtle bodies around them. I don’t really remember the premise or anything, all I remember is it was fun to make them fall down.
Well…..u sure are all lucky in U.S.A !!
and whats that “hero turtle ” thing? i’m italian( so in Europe) and here no hero turtle appear. instead, we have ” le tartarughe ninja “, wich litteraly means ” the ninja turtles” !!
they fuck up the hero thing, and even the teenage!
that makes no sense at all
that turtles ker plunk game your alking about i mainly remember by the turtle plastic bodies encasing a ball bearing they could roll on.. not sure what it was though? I have the pizza power game still though! lol all these tmnt videos are awesome btw james, awesome to know youre as big of a ninja turtles fan as I am!
I am doing a ninja turtles fan comic in a dark style, check out http://www.youtube.com/newtmntcomic I will be posting it here soon!
thanks for the nostalgia dudes and dudettes!
I’ve seen in several of your videos about TMNT that you say that in europe they were called teenage mutant hero turtles… that maybe in the rest of europe, but i’m from spain and here they were called… Ninja Turtles. That’s it. Who needs more?. And they didn’t even take the bother to change the song of the cartoon, they left the same song in english, of course, no kid knew english back in that time so, who is ever going to realize that we totally fucked-up the title? I guess they couldn’t predict the internet and english class for all the kids born from 1990 and up…
Something even more shocking about the translation is that when the movie came out they didn’t know how to translate cowabunga because there’s no word in spanish for that… so… they translated with something like ”YEAH MOTHERFUCKER!”, for real. Every time you people heard cowabunga, here in spain the kids hear ”YEAH, MOTHERFUCKER!” So, the famous ”damn!” scene seems now… well… a single damn it’s nothing compare to hundreds of ”YEAH MOTHERFUCKER!”
You may think that the parents could go crazy and censored the show or something, but here in spain it’s never like that, or at least it wasn’t, there was no parents associations or something like that, my parents and all my friends parents always knew that we were kids but we were not stupid, we know how to tell the diference between a movie/videogame and the real world. In that sense here in spain when blockbuster came out in the eighties, they also rented porn movies and they were next to the regular movies, only separated by a little door or a shelf behind the horror movie section, and in theaters no parents cares about the rating of the movie, i’ve seen many friday 13 and other horror movies with 6-7 years old in theaters and no problem.
And by the way the translation from teenage mutant ninja turtles to ninja turtles here in spain it have nothing to do with censorship, they always change the titles of every fucking movie here in spain just for the loose.
A classic example of this is the movie ”groundhog day” it was translated like ”trapped in time” or the movie ”some like it hot” in spain was ”wearing skirts and going crazy” of course in spanish, but you get the idea.
So sorry for the huge comment, good luck with your movie, greetings from spain, you have many fans here!
Jame`s i dont know from who you`ve gotten the false fact that tmnt was tmnh here in holland it just was tmnt as in the rest of the world.
since people here in holland said the same about the us that they where acting lame on the word ninja.. but i always thought it was just bull shit.
for that matter tmnt here in holland was only sub whit dutch
@DarkDimo,
I never said Holland specifically. I said Europe in general. I’m not sure exactly which European countries had the “Hero” version, but it most definitely happened as the board game itself proves. Thanks for your info, we know now that it wasn’t Holland, so maybe someone else can identify which exact European countries it was.
I have fond memories of playing it with my great-grandpa back in the early 90s. He had no idea who the Turtles were, but that didn’t stop him from winning against me haha.
When TMNT first popped up on TV here in Sweden, they used “Hero” in the name and the board game I just linked to also used “Hero” in the name. For example the VHS tapes had “Ninja” in the name though, so we ended up getting both versions of the name here. Everyone I know just called them “Turtles” anyway.
@Teus
Oh man, I had that game too but I never figuerd out how to play it. I wish I still had it. I’m from Sweden too and I remember that they used Hero most of the time.
May 24, 2011 at 1:18 am

May 24, 2011 at 3:29 am

I hope whoever designed them got fired and is now living in a sewer.

I’ve been looking forward to this all day. It’s good to have Board James up. Thanks for posting.
May 24, 2011 at 3:27 pm
TMNT board games doesn’t sound like a very good idea. For pretty much any young male focused action show with a big selection of enemies like TMNT, you need trading card games. I know there’s one already but I don’t know much about it, except it’s based on the 2003 Turtles and is nothing special, so I assume it doesn’t have pizza, sewers, April O’Neill, or the Technodrome.

I’m so glad James has time to work on Board James and YKWBS again.
May 24, 2011 at 4:01 pm
It would have bin awesome if James said:
“But not the one I review thought”
and:
“Cowa fucking pice of dog shit!”
Awesome…

May 24, 2011 at 4:57 pm
“Teenage Mutant Ninja TURT-LEES!”
I have no idea why, but I couldn’t stop laughing when you said that.
May 24, 2011 at 4:59 pm
Oh boy I’m 30 and I got the last board game when I was like 10 for christmas and …. my god this game is way too complex for kids seriously, I think we’ve spend like 2 hours trying to finish the game with no clue what we’re supposed to do exactly, you didn’t show it in your video but the instructions were very unclear….. especially for 10 years old kids.
I was playing with my cousins and after 2 hours we said like “fuck that game, we don’t get it” and I threw it in my wardrobe and never touched it again until I sold it for $10 when I made a flea market.
May 24, 2011 at 5:02 pm
Man i’m surprised I never played a ninja turtle board game. I loved board games and me and my brother thought ninja turtles was the shit.
May 24, 2011 at 5:15 pm
When I was a kid I had the TMNT miniature golf set. It was pretty damn fun actually. It would be neat to see a review of it if James could get his hands on it. I’m pretty sure all of the pieces in my set were either busted or lost within a month or else I’d donate it.
May 24, 2011 at 5:46 pm
JAMES! Long time fan, first time commenter!
I couldn’t contain myself when a great injustice was done to my favorite turtle, Raphael.
At 0:22, you call him Michaelangelo! Tsk, tsk, James. Tsk, tsk.
May 24, 2011 at 5:47 pm
I’m sure someone has said this before, but you forgot to say cow-a-fuckin-piece of dog-shit..
Seriously though great review.
May 24, 2011 at 5:49 pm
I remember when I was younger I bought a tmnt board game. Later when I got home I realized it was packaged without instructions. A game like this had hundreds of pieces, and I never got to play it.
May 24, 2011 at 6:29 pm
I remember a Ninja Turtles game that was like Kerplunk, where you pulled out swords and turtle marbles fell down and you had to scoop them up when they came out the bottom of this NYC building.
May 24, 2011 at 6:37 pm
Last game cover =
Splinter is holding a stake saying “there’s a vampire! Get him turtles! Noone is gonna outlive me!”. “But Splinter, that’s Shredder!” Yeah that’s what i said, get him! And drive this stake through his heart! You get pizza!”
Kawabunga Dude!
May 24, 2011 at 6:59 pm
Holy Cow, another awesome BJ with James and Motherfucker Mike!
Now, why people say: YOU FORGOT TO SAY, you didnt say this, you didnt say that….MAN! leave the guy say what he wants! if a catchy phrase is not present, bear with it! but dont keep remembering him that!
A man is not great by his words, nor his actions, but for being humble or unpretentious.
May 24, 2011 at 7:06 pm
Im 30 yrs old,and i remember picking up the last game too.i’m guessing i had to be 10 or 11.i remember playing it with my friends.i also remember that crappy flipper thing and how, frustrating, and stupid it was.that game sucked back then and it sucks today.

May 24, 2011 at 8:09 pm
What about Tower of Doom? That was the only turtles game I ever saw growing up. I remember playing it a lot but I don’t remember if it was ACTUALLY fun. I hope someone can donate that to you or something, I’d like to see that one reviewed.

May 24, 2011 at 8:41 pm
I had the Pizza Power game and played it every day tel’ I lost all the parts to it. I think it was my fav board game of my child hood.
May 24, 2011 at 8:45 pm
I had a TMNT version of Ker-Plunk that I thought was awesome. You could just play with the figures and forget about the game entirely, and it came with a load of swords instead of the sticks. Kick ass game.
May 24, 2011 at 9:42 pm
Have you guys ever heard of “Dweebs Geeks & Weirdos”?
May 24, 2011 at 9:45 pm
These games, like the very first NES game, are Cowaf**kin’ peices of dog s**t. BTW, I’ve played “TMNT 2: The Arcade Game” online, and it IS fun.
May 24, 2011 at 10:00 pm
decent video, get back to AVGN
May 24, 2011 at 11:15 pm
We had the TMNT Table top hockey game. I was 6 and my sister was 7 at the time and we had got this during christmas. It was the best gift ever. I think it was broken and our parents trashed it, I’m not sure.
May 24, 2011 at 11:55 pm
Hey there is a Ninja Turtles board game I used to have, it was essentially Ker-Plunk, but the “marbles” were ball bearings with plastic turtle bodies around them. I don’t really remember the premise or anything, all I remember is it was fun to make them fall down.
Sound familiar to anyone?
May 25, 2011 at 12:17 am
James: He finds himself in the manhole cover
Mike: That’s deep man…
LMAO
May 25, 2011 at 12:18 am
manhole* not manhole cover. Damn I failed hardcore
May 25, 2011 at 1:04 am
Odd, I had the last game there and as a kid I remember it being awesome somehow. I think we just made up our own rules or something lol
May 25, 2011 at 3:23 am
Very interesting look at those old board games, even if they don’t seem all that fun. It was a great video. Thanks!
May 25, 2011 at 4:19 am
Well…..u sure are all lucky in U.S.A !!

May 25, 2011 at 8:44 am
Hey James!
May 25, 2011 at 9:13 am
why michael angelo in the last game brown, but the rest is green?
May 25, 2011 at 9:43 am
Jame`s i dont know from who you`ve gotten the false fact that tmnt was tmnh here in holland it just was tmnt as in the rest of the world.
since people here in holland said the same about the us that they where acting lame on the word ninja.. but i always thought it was just bull shit.
for that matter tmnt here in holland was only sub whit dutch
May 25, 2011 at 11:24 am
Cowabunga… cowa-fucking piece of dog shit!
May 25, 2011 at 12:08 pm
I have a TMNT table top pinball machine that I can donate if you guys need it.
May 25, 2011 at 12:39 pm
@DarkDimo,
I never said Holland specifically. I said Europe in general. I’m not sure exactly which European countries had the “Hero” version, but it most definitely happened as the board game itself proves. Thanks for your info, we know now that it wasn’t Holland, so maybe someone else can identify which exact European countries it was.
May 25, 2011 at 1:00 pm
Don’t know if this board game was available in the States, but this was the one I had when I was a kid: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31877/teenage-mutant-hero-turtles-3d-spel
I have fond memories of playing it with my great-grandpa back in the early 90s. He had no idea who the Turtles were, but that didn’t stop him from winning against me haha.
May 25, 2011 at 1:15 pm
When TMNT first popped up on TV here in Sweden, they used “Hero” in the name and the board game I just linked to also used “Hero” in the name. For example the VHS tapes had “Ninja” in the name though, so we ended up getting both versions of the name here. Everyone I know just called them “Turtles” anyway.
May 25, 2011 at 1:31 pm
@Teus
Oh man, I had that game too but I never figuerd out how to play it. I wish I still had it. I’m from Sweden too and I remember that they used Hero most of the time.
May 25, 2011 at 1:49 pm
According to Wikipedia it was called TMHT in the UK.
BTW, if we’re into saying how it’s called in our countries, in Israel it was called Tsabey HaNinja.
May 25, 2011 at 1:52 pm
This was awesome! Not those boardgames…they suck ass…..one of the funniest board james so far!
May 25, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Rest assured, I have April’s man hole covered.
