Top stuff! Awesome show! I’d really like to see reviews of the new 2003 TMNT show. It’s very different but still as cool as the classic TMNT! Two of my favourites TV series!
TMNT Tuesdays really gives me something to look forward to watching online while AVGN is on hiatus. I really have enjoyed this series so far. Thanks James!
One comment I could really relate to was when you said that you grew out of the series after awhile because it was too corny. I was the same way because I was starting to get to that age where it “wasn’t cool” to watch cartoons.
Even though I have always loved the original series, I love it even more now than I did back then because of the jokes. It’s really great, you don’t find humor like that as much nowadays. I will never get sick of it.
Thanks for revisiting. It is obvious I will have to rewatch them sometimes. Some things I still remember but there is stuff I really don’t remember anymore.
But like you I stopped watching at a certain point.
Yay after Michelangelo, Slash is without a doubt my favorit turtle! I would like to see a review about Turtles in time, snes and arcade version, if you havent already done that and i missed it
His episodes have dutch subtitles probably because he downloaded them from bitorrent or some website and the only ones on the net are those that have dutch subtitles, i have the same ones.
I have to admit that it is sad that I don’t remember the day I stopped watching TMNT. It’s kinda like that movie Drop Dead Fred (if any of you remember that good for you), one day you just grow up and then that’s it.
But I think the one thing that separates us from watching the show, is the good old video game. You can always sit down and play a TMNT game with a friend and no one says a peep. You can’t always sit down with a friend and watch a show…but a game is always ok. I guess it carries the least amount of embarrassment with it.
Michaelangelo with two katanas on the title card always bothered me. The animation in this show was so lazy. The Technodrome gets squashed so much. They recycled clips a lot too.
The constant 4th wall breaks were one of my favorite parts of the series; They went a little overboard with it at times but it also made the show a lot of fun to watch. I think that’s one reason Tiny Toons and Animaniacs were also so well received.
And even after all these years I STILL chuckle at Shredder doing the, “Roll camera!” bit.
You mention of the monster movies was good; Remember in the first live-action film, Raphael goes to the movies and ends up disgusted with the film he saw. (I want to say it was Critters? I can’t remember.)
Anyway, I’m loving this retro turtle trip. Can’t wait ’til next Tuesday!
I’m pretty sure the Technodrome was defeated in the 2nd or 3rd to last season finale right before they changed the style of the show.
Also, I had this fanfic where they teamed up with Superman and Batman and Supes took out Krang in his giant body and then…
Superman: Mechanical henchmen? A brain-themed supervillain? Really? Next, you’ll be telling me your one weekness is some green stuff that has to do with your origin.
just registered ’cause I just had to comment. At 7;16 where you comment on the insult something like ‘chiphead’
There are Dutch subtitles and since I’m Dutch I can read them
‘Komt in orde. Vooruit,
chipbrein, laat zien wat je kunt.’
Translated:
“It’s taken care of, Move it,
CHIPBRAIN, show us what you’ve got!
Yeah, it was definitely Critters that Raph saw at the movies in TMNT 1. I’ve seen that movie about 50 times in my life so I’m positive . Great Turtle Tuesdays as always James.
Great ! I’ve watched the 6 first seasons recently and I did not noticed half of what you discovered.
I bet that you are gonna review duck tales next, because there are so many things to say about this show and there is an episode with a lot of monster from classic horror !
Correct me if im wrong,… I remember the Snes fighting videogame titled “TMNT Tournament Fighters” has shredder saying when you make an special attack -mother fucker!- literaly!!,… it was pretty wierd and i cant find any youtube video with that power but you can try it and tell me if all was a mistake,…
I can’t help but wonder if you’ll touch upon the Real Ghostbusters in the future. They were on around the same time, if not back-to-back. I seem to recall that series making reference to old horror movies too.
FYI, Lord Dregg may be based on Lord Xenu. Writer Jeffrey Scott is a Scientologist and said once in an interview that he put Scientology themes into episodes of Muppet Babies.
For all the shit you’ve been getting from fans about Over Analyzers, (I’m on that list too), it’s videos like this that make up for it. Great work!
When April O’Neil thought “AssFuck”, & when Porky Pig tried to say “kitty” but could only get out “pussy”; it made me laugh.
This suggestion is dipping into “Nerd Territory”, but for one Turtle Tuesday, I’d like to see game reviews on TMNT 3: The Manhattan Project, Turtles In Time, The Turtles Tournament Fighter (I forget what it’s called but it was made by Konami), & The Hyper Stone (?).
Actually, they did manage to permanently shut down the Technodrome as of season 8. The main engines were destroyed and a giant monster pulled it into a pit. It was too damaged to repair after that, although apparently the rock soldiers managed to get it out of the pit and back upright somehow. Had the series continued, they may well have gotten it back in action.
cool, thumps up for using the dutch aired tmnt episode. They translated it here as chipbrain (chipbrein in the subtitels) :-S . American puns or jokes dont work over here unfortunately !!
I hope in part three James will talk about the times when one of the Turtles will have a funny voice. Its like the normal voice actor went on vacation and they used a different actor to do the part. It mostly happens with donatello or raphael.
James, you’re attention to detail in these videos amazes me every time.
How you find the appropriate clip from nearly every episode is mind boggling. How many hours a day do you spend watching these videos versus the time it takes to edit them?
What should have been mentioned in the retrospective is writer David Wise, who developed a dark comic book series into a light slapstick-heavy, cartoon series. He has written pretty much every good 80s cartoons.
James/Mike or anyone for that matter. By any chance do you guys know if the composer Shuki Levy did the score for the series? I know he did for a lot of DIC cartoons and real ghostbusters, can you confirm this? Can’t really find an answer. The music sure does sound similar. Thanks!
I remember a few times a movie monster called Gorgonzola was mentioned, even shown once I think. Basically Godzilla of course.
Also, corrections: Leatherhead was saying possum-pusses, and puss is old timey slang for face. And a snow job is old timey slang for telling a bunch of lies in a row.
theres actually another close “swear” that you didn’t mention. Somewhere in season 8 (i forget the episode name, but maybe its “Get Shredder”), there’s a moment where Don asks April how she knows so much about the Hall of Science (i think), and she says, “Well, uh, i DID one of their scientists…” I think she meant to say “dated” but it still came out as “did.”
I wonder if James noticed at around 10:51 (THE CASE OF THE KILLER PIZZAS) that Michaelangelo is using Leonardos kitanas… or Leonardo is wearing Michaelangelos colors! LOL
There was some seriously under-appreciated writing going on in this show. Amazing. Even without the beer-goggles of nostalgia, I have to say the writing from this show was incredibly brilliant compared with most other kid shows, back then or today.
I’m loving the amount of content you are putting out on Cinemassacre lately. It’s one of my favourite websites.
Was wondering if you have ever seen HappyConsoleGamer and his videos. He is a really nice guy and does some great nostalgia reviews. It would be awesome if you guys did a video together someday.
Anyway, hope your movie is coming along nicely, really interested to see it.
Anyone know the name of that song or what movie its from that starts playing at 9:30 mins in? its when hes talking about the poster on the wall, iv been trying to figure out that song for years now any information would be greatly appreciated.
Hmmm…lots of ’80s cartoons did that addition of horror/sci-fi elements. I wonder if they were trying to cater to that element of the forbidden in kids like EC did with their horror comics.
Brings me back, loved the turtles! Admittedly I think I only watched the first season really. I had a few episodes on VHS which we had recorded, epic show really.
I can’t wait for part three, and the most ironic thing for me is always eating pizza while watching these updates on the reviews! I hope by tuesday to have pizza then too.
Yeah, it was Possum Pusses that he said… not much of a difference, but yeah.. haha.
Anyway, that’s great. I don’t remember a lot of this stuff. It’s pretty cool to think about. Makes me want to watch the old show even more. Loved this review, and greatly look forward to part 3.
Hey, did anyone notice in the title cards where they display the title of each episode they blatantly got the color wrong on Leonardo. It looks like Michaelangelo is holding Kitana Blades.
Wow this takes me back. I loved the turtles when I was a kid. Glad to see I’m not the only one who noticed the near-swearing going on constantly. I remember hearing someone say “fuckin’” quite clearly during a fight seen once (don’t recall the exact episode, it was in the first few seasons; a bunch of criminals copy the Foot Clan’s schtick). Anyway, great video, can’t wait for part three.
“Snow job” isn’t innuendo at all. It’s a common expression that means “cover-up”. You know, like when it snows it covers everything so you can’t see what’s on the ground? Helen Gahagan Douglas famously referred to the Nixon administration as “the greatest snow job in history”. Perfectly innocent pun.
I even noticed this as a little kid; why in the title cards does Michael Angelo have two Kantanas??? Aren’t those Leonard’s weapons??? Am i the only one that noticed that??
May 3, 2011 at 3:16 am
Finally!
Cant wait for the last part.
May 3, 2011 at 3:21 am
Great recap James, thoroughly enjoyable!
May 3, 2011 at 3:42 am
Excellent. Always excellent. Anybody else have the Moose Canadian Mounty Toy?

I always thought those yellow creatures looked like the aliens from the Alien series! Thanks for affirming that! My childhood has come full circle…

May 3, 2011 at 6:59 am
Thank you!
May 3, 2011 at 7:40 am
Good job!
As you probably know already, the person who did Shredder’s voice was James Avery aka Uncle Phil.
May 3, 2011 at 7:47 am
That was some great info about the series, thanks a lot for sharing your vast knowledge.
Will you bring the site’s favicon back now, please?
May 3, 2011 at 8:07 am

Btw, James Avery did not do all the voices for shredder. Download/watch the mechaturtle episode. He has a replacement or laryngitis
May 3, 2011 at 8:22 am
I enjoy these videos a lot, i would like them to never end
May 3, 2011 at 8:35 am
The music at 10:31 sounds familiar, lol!
May 3, 2011 at 8:41 am
Thanks for mentioning the titles, I loved how the 80′s took shits on 50′s culture.
May 3, 2011 at 9:11 am
Really enjoyed the second part of your recap.
I lost it when you were talking about the different cartoons that mention pussy,
May 3, 2011 at 9:28 am
Thanks! This review was totally TUBULARRRRRRRR!!
May 3, 2011 at 9:30 am
“He just took away all of your goodies!”
Finally, an episode I remember. I didn’t watch this show that much…but that above quote I’ve always remembered.
May 3, 2011 at 9:43 am
Why is he so obsessed with TMNT?
May 3, 2011 at 10:15 am
I think my favorite was Adventures in Turtle-sitting just b/c it was a reference to Adventures is Babysitting.
May 3, 2011 at 10:34 am
TMNT Tuesdays are almost as good as AVGN first Wednesdays of the month. Great review James.
May 3, 2011 at 11:11 am
Awesome stuff man! I was a TMNT fanatic when i was a kid…definitely brings back some memories =D Oh! btw what was that pussy row boat song from?
May 3, 2011 at 11:38 am
Another great review! My favorite part was trying to figure out if they were really swearing. Possum pussies LOL!
May 3, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Raphael: Hey, watch it, pal, we’re completely original.
Michaelangelo: Yeah, dude, and if you have any doubt about that, you can ask April O’Neil.
Superman: Yeah? Who’s she?
Michaelangelo: The pretty news reporter who’s always being kidnapped by our enemies.
May 3, 2011 at 12:42 pm
I’m stunned that you manage to identify all the references and then find the video clips for them. Masterful work as always.

REALLY ENJOYING THESE! ^_^
May 3, 2011 at 3:02 pm
Ha, the Turtles are kinda like Ash in Pokemon, like the way he can’t see through Team Rocket’s obvious disguises.
May 3, 2011 at 3:20 pm
@ Frank
So, hopefully the mysterie is solved”
Not quite. It’s more like:
“I’m on it/I’ll take care of it. Alright chip brain, so me what you got/can do.
And it’s “mystery”.

May 3, 2011 at 5:33 pm

I’ll admit I lost it when he said that one.

Why did they change Michelangelo’s weapon to a grappling hook?
Were nunchucks too hard to animate?
May 3, 2011 at 5:58 pm
what cartoon was that where the cat is singing to the other cat?
that was too funny.

@Darkshaman: It’s “Aura Crusher”. (I always thought it sounded like “Moron Crusher”.)
@BananaJane: I have heard that Mikey’s nunchaku were replaced because the English censors were scared of them, like they were with the word Ninja.

Opossum pussy…I’m going to say that to my girl time I get it on. “yeah baby, I love that opossum pussy.”

I don’t have time to site thought these old shows, but this is the next best thing! Shoot, who’m I kidding: this is better!

these reviews are so great, thank you James.
May 5, 2011 at 8:59 pm

One of the best of your reviews!
