Generation: T.M.N.T.

Mike Matei / April 5th, 2011

A tribute to our favorite childhood action figures. Recorded/edited in 2003. Many of you have already seen this, but now it has a new thrash metal theme song by Bonded by Blood.

This is the 2011 edition. There is a few (previously deleted) scenes added back in that haven’t been seen since the original 2003 VHS copy. So this is the most complete version that exists.

Get ready for “Turtle Tuesdays!” I’ll be posting new TMNT related videos from now on through the summer, every Tuesday.

NOTE: The bathroom sink was cracked and stained. It was like that before we moved into that shitty apartment.

“Heroes on the half-shell” didn’t mean anything except for a stupid play on words referencing a way to serve oysters. “On the half shell”, as in you crack it open and throw the top part of the shell away, leaving the oyster sitting on the bottom shell like a little plate you can eat the oyster off of.

There’s really nothing else to it. They just thought it sounded funny.

There are many fine ways to serve a turtle. One of them is stuffed in the back of it’s there shell. In the manner of a stuffed crabcake. Another is turtle soup, which I believe became of the ninja turtles in the end.

I totally remember when James actually had this uploaded to YouTube! I was actually thinking about this video the other day, and I couldn’t remember for the life of me who uploaded it. I can’t find it on YouTube anymore. I wonder how long ago James took the upload down.

Can’t wait to see what other turtle videos you have in store, these guys defined my childhood. I had many of the same toys in this video and I remember dreaming about getting the sewer diorama (which I never did). Instead of keeping my action figures though me and friends threw a lot of them in a bonfire, lol We were probably 13 or 14 at the time! I had the same Donatello turtle whose shell opened up into a compartment and I remember trying to trap ants inside of it. Time goes by too fast.

Random Trivia: Listen to the Theme song from TMNT for NES (Played at the beginning of this video) and then listen to the guitar lick after the solo in Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast.

Hey, Incognito, you’re a little off, there. The line is “heroes IN a half-shell”, as in currently residing inside half of a shell. Although I don’t doubt the connection to oysters and oyster dining procedure, “heroes in a half-shell” at least makes sense contextually to the show. “Heroes on the half-shell” doesn’t make any sense at all; is Shredder planning to eat them of something? Is Splinter? Whatever.

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a Krang action figure with the cyborg body. Over here (Ireland) you could only get krang in his little bipedal walker thingy.

James, will you be talking about the 2003 series as well, or is this only focused on the 80s-90s TMNT? The 2003 series ended with a big cross over with the 2 at least so that should get a mention, right?

Have you seen Turtles Forever yet?

In 1987 I remember a buddy suggesting we hang out at the comic store on our high school lunch break. Perfect after a mid-day toke. So he shows me a copy of TMNT after dragging me away from The Amazing Spiderman. He is more excited than normal over it and tells me that the back issues are already selling for 5 times their issue pricing.

I laughed it off and went back to my Marvel and DC stuff. Just looked up pricing on a comic valuation site. TMNT #1 is selling for 5 grand.

I have a pretty extensive Ninja Turtles collection, I have at least one of every character except Baxter Stockman and April. But I don’t have nearly as many variants as you do, and I thought I was cool because I have the vehicles like the Turtle blimp, rocksteady’s copter, and the pizza thrower.

  • April 5, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Ye ol sewer, she be a cruel mistress! Did you ever notice how their home in the sewer always seemed so homely?! Never mind that smell of shit, just tuk into your pizza. Was Splinter like a stay home mom, cooking and cleaning. They always came home to a nice pizza and a hero’s welcome from Splinter. I never once saw a big dookie floating past. I believe this is the reason a lot of kids actually went down into the sewers and died trying to find the TMNT. The sewer is not a hospitable environment. You can’t eat pizza down there, the stench down there could kill you. I once went down the sewer the smell would take your breath away. That’s what the Top Gun song is about. The sewer!

I haven’t exactly been all that big on your recent site posts (we don’t need to know *everything* about your childhood, James) but I’m really excited for Turtle Tuesdays. One of the videos that really got me into Cinemassacre was the Nerd’s review of the third movie :D.

FYI, the term half shell is typically used when referring to oysters or clams in a seafood restaurant, as in Oyster on a Half Shell.

My understanding of the term “Turtles on a Half Shell” was a play on that term and in regards to Shredder constantly referring to his desire to eat the Turtles or prepare them in a dish.

Eg. When he refers to turning them into Turtle Soup.

Believe or not, I hadn’t seen this vid. I wondered where the toys footage came from in the movie review. This vid is funny. I liked the April – Whip part ^_^

  • April 6, 2011 at 9:31 am

That guy with the cap looks Elijah Wood!

Really laughed at the ‘whip’ part.

  • April 6, 2011 at 10:30 am

That is the epitome of college-guy-sink. It’s ALMOST as bad as my kids. I was such a huge fan of the turtles, but really old school, stemming from Eastman and Laird. While I loved and collected a few of these, and watched the cartoon religiously, I still prefer the old, gritty, dark, black and white turtles where leo’s katanas actually send limbs flying instead of being just a glorified pizza slicer. What sent me over the edge was when they went to ARCHIE comics, holy ass…

When the toys first hit the stores, I bought all the originals, the four turtles and splinter, and kept them sealed away in a locked wooden box to be safe, and only took them out once in a while…I never imagined that years later I would unlock that box and give them to my 4 kids to have fun with (aka destroy)….but they’ll never get my Transformers, no way in hell.

@ Cito; I asked myself the same thing, must’ve been some killer-smoke mixed in during that period of filmmaking and whatnot (Atleast with those cap wearing dudes) x))

Oh my god, I was laughing so hard! What do you get when you give four grown men a bunch of TMNT action figures? It was hilarious. My two favourite parts were the one-legged Don in the sink and Leo and April near the end. Using innocent childhood memories in manners never intended. Nice job guys.

  • April 7, 2011 at 12:16 am

Great to see the new version of this video. It’s an awesome collection man. I never had that many, haha. I’m fully behind you in your need to take time off, and also to make a feature film! Turtle Tuesdays is a huge bonus! I look forward to more.

  • Darth-Prinny

    April 7, 2011 at 10:55 pm

The TMNT only have HALF a shell compared to real turtles, that’s how they can bend over and move in a human-like fashion because the shell stops around where a coccyx (or even further up) would be on a human. A real turtle’s shell covers its entire body so compared to real turtles, the TMNT only have half a shell in size/coverage which makes sense since they’re half humanoid too.

  • April 7, 2011 at 11:14 pm

Heroes on a half shell is a reference to the painting the birth of Venus by Botticelli. Look up Venus on a half shell and you will dig up a ton of literary injokes.

    April 9, 2011 at 10:49 pm

I remember I use to have these things, I would just play with them, then chunk them across the room and forget about them. If it wasn’t for my small house I would kept these in shelves along with my other crap.

    Looking forward to Turtle Tuesdays……!

    April 9, 2011 at 11:17 pm

The other thing regarding the “half-shell” thing, beyond the oyster/clam/mussel thing being served on the half shell, as in in just the bottom half so you don’t have to open them, I also think it was just marketing execs or whoever came up with the phrase not really having an understanding of the source material and just going with things that sound good. It happens a lot.

  • April 10, 2011 at 10:04 am

OMG!!! I lol’d sooo hard at the whipping part… lolz, that’s right April, you naughty girl!!! hahaha

  • April 10, 2011 at 11:42 am

That was awesome. I didn’t have nearly as many. I had at tops maybe 30 figures and none of the vehicles. Then my mom gave them all to my cousin when I was in grade 10…. :C

  • Hipzip 14

    April 11, 2011 at 8:26 pm

I kinda agree with Marks theory. Its half a shell, put two of the shells together and its one full shell.

This reminds me of all the Spawn and Aliens action figures I used to have. The Violator was the most awesome villain ever, and I actually have a Predator made of metal scraps that I got as a gift from an art festival, best thing I own apart from my Twilight Zone Mystic Seer of course

  • DEATHMgck

    April 15, 2011 at 9:39 pm

Very nice! You simultaneously reminded me how much I still love the turtles and that “half shell” seems like a derogatory remark.

  • April 16, 2011 at 1:05 pm

The metal is a great touch! By adding in all of the different action figures with it, you have basically remade some of their legendary commercial spots.
Does anyone know how many different variants were made of the turtles?
