Mike and James take a look at the absurd menu screen on the Super Mario Bros Super Show, “Mario’s Greatest Movie Moments” DVD.
NOTE: Anyone who has watched Inspector Gadget as a kid, remembers the famous “DIC” logo. How could you forget a name like that? So yes, we all know that DIC is the same company that produced the Super Mario Bros Super Show, but that does not explain why Inspector Gadget belongs on the menu screen!

April 1, 2011 at 12:06 pm
Didn’t take you too long to do this. Good review, as always…
April 1, 2011 at 12:13 pm
“Did you swear man? I don’t care, I’m just asking, If I’m hearing things or if I’m going to sleep.”
April 1, 2011 at 12:18 pm
I take it back, this isn’t a good review. It’s a fantastic review. Simply hilarious.
Inspector Gadget is such a fucking dick.
April 1, 2011 at 12:20 pm
For the love of God, do more of these. Just watching you and Mike make of of stuff is hilarious. This made my week.
April 1, 2011 at 12:20 pm
fun of, not of of
April 1, 2011 at 12:22 pm
Lol, beard James. Funniest over analytical attack on a DVD menu. Great stuff guys.
April 1, 2011 at 12:23 pm
And here is the review as you promised.
Thanks for the video guys, it was hilarious!
I’m doomed to never see Inspector Gadget again in my life without “buttons” and ‘move the glow” quotes playing in my head
April 1, 2011 at 12:26 pm
That was a fun video.
And in case anyone did NOT know this, Inspector Gadget was probably the most popular cartoon by DIC. Most likely he’s featured on all DIC home DVDs from that year.
That doesn’t mean James and Mike are wrong in their confusion about his prominence. He takes up most of the screen!
April 1, 2011 at 12:29 pm
Dude, i laughed till i cried ! Purely awesome review !
April 1, 2011 at 12:30 pm
It’s a dvd made for 4 year olds lol, what do you expect.
April 1, 2011 at 12:32 pm
wow, that menu was tedius. Video is sooo worth watching for the last minute of Don Adams impressions. Wonderful!
April 1, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Dude, this was hilarious. I love these sort of candid videos you and Mike do. I’d love to see more of this kind of stuff.
April 1, 2011 at 12:43 pm
I will never be able to say “button” again, without bursting in laughter xD
April 1, 2011 at 12:46 pm
I think Gadget is on the DVD because Inspector Gadget was also made by DiC. Also, his voice-actor was a guest star in one of the live action segments.
April 1, 2011 at 12:48 pm
man this was so great.
April 1, 2011 at 12:52 pm
LOL This was the by far the best out-of-character review video you guys have ever done. Killer job mike and james!
Also, love to see the stache coming back!
April 1, 2011 at 12:53 pm
Brilliant
April 1, 2011 at 1:04 pm
Actually not only was the voice actor of Inspector Gadget on but also the “actual” live action Inspector Gadget (and no not Matthew Broderick either) in one of the life action segments of the show. Of course I only know that becuase Nostalgia Critic reviewed the show and yeah it didn’t exactly age very well. Still if they have INpsector Gadget on the DVD at least have the freaking live action segment he comes from in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show as to actually give a reason why he’s on the DVD. Freaking idiot DICs.
April 1, 2011 at 1:07 pm
Hilarious review guys! Simply brilliant. I was laughing my ass off.
April 1, 2011 at 1:09 pm
Wait, how was I supposed to figure out how to start the Inspector Gadget help if I don’t always know about the arrow keys, BUTTONs, and “glow”???
April 1, 2011 at 1:10 pm
Oh my god, I was crying from laughing so much. I loved the ending with the Inspector Gadget insults. I could watch something like that all day, hahaha.
April 1, 2011 at 1:22 pm
really great. haven´t laughed so much on this site for a long time.
April 1, 2011 at 1:26 pm
yeah, the beard is great james. keep it growing, show us the man in you!
April 1, 2011 at 1:32 pm
hahaha
April 1, 2011 at 1:39 pm
the end part was so funny I was crying from laughing so hard
April 1, 2011 at 1:42 pm
u look like stoners LOL
April 1, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Ok, if someone passed by while we were listening to that menu, here’s what they’d hear: “Click on the DICK logo to see more DICK cartoons!”
April 1, 2011 at 1:49 pm
This is hilarious, lol
Inspector Gadget is such a condescending DIC-K
April 1, 2011 at 1:54 pm
James, I dare you to bring Shit Pickle as the DVD Menu guide for the next AVGN DVD!!!
“Pickle pickle, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit pickle!”
And then you add subtitles to what he’s actually saying, which was “Press the Select or Action BUTTON!”
April 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm
BEST ENDING EVER!!! LOL
April 1, 2011 at 2:06 pm
Oh god this was hilarious! Good job guys!
April 1, 2011 at 2:11 pm
Nice one! i love crazy DVD menu screens, they’re better than the actual movie sometimes
April 1, 2011 at 2:17 pm
What a crazy DVD menu! I love this video. Somehow it feels like Eric Cartman and some other characters from South Park are reviewing the DVD.
April 1, 2011 at 2:24 pm
LOL
Funniest review you guys ever did, so far.
James & Mike ftw
April 1, 2011 at 2:25 pm
Wow. I bought the entire series on DVD, and I wish Inspector Gadget was on that set, would have been hours of extra entertainment for free!
April 1, 2011 at 2:25 pm
Wow, I never had the idea of watching these alternative reviews… jeez, that was great! I laughed very much seeing you and Mike make fun of that absurd DVD menu, totally reminds me of how myself and my friends also doing that.
Great video!
April 1, 2011 at 2:36 pm
This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time! Love it!
That menu is waay fucked up.
April 1, 2011 at 2:41 pm
Happy April 1st James and Mike
April 1, 2011 at 2:45 pm
so now that i’ve seen American Movie like a hundred times, I’m starting to notice you quote that movie in like..everything you do. Like I can’t escape it.
That DVD is fucking ridiculous. Goddamn condescending Inspector Gadget!
April 1, 2011 at 2:49 pm
I did not laugh like this since a while, thanks.
You got to have a shit like that in your next AVGN DVD menu
Speaking of thinks that as no connection with the content, James, you look cool with the beard.
April 1, 2011 at 2:49 pm
The funniest part is that you actually have to navigate “the glow” over to Inspector Gadget and press the enter button for him to explain to you how to move the “glow” and press the enter button. How stupid is that?
April 1, 2011 at 2:54 pm
Yeah in retrospective the whole setup is hilariously ludicrous. But being a new format at the time for most people it probably seemed overwhelmingly complicated once they saw the movie didn’t start right up like VHS or LD did.
Also DIC probably assumed its small children who watch cartoons so that would make matters worse. Probably never occured to them that its mainly adults like us who watch this LOL. And I’d be willing to bet that DIC used Inspector Gadget as this “assistant” for all their cartoon DVDs at the time.
Just some thoughts. Keep up the awesome work guys!
April 1, 2011 at 3:03 pm
Your funny comments about the fact that there is help on the new DVD features reminds me. I have a box of the first pencils to come with erasers on the back end, and the box comes with instructions on how to use a pencil with an eraser on it, since before then, all erasers were separate.
April 1, 2011 at 3:09 pm
That was the first time I ever got caught at work watching a vid, the laughing gave it away!! haha some kind of magical Mike and james
You guys really do make a killer duo!
April 1, 2011 at 3:12 pm
That was great…especially the last part which had me laughing my ass off! I had totally forgotten about the company DIC which used to play at the end of some of those shows. Man did I ever get in trouble with the folks so many times for yelling “DICK!!!!” whenever I saw that logo. Quite possibly the worst idea for a company name of a kids show that I know of. ^_^
April 1, 2011 at 3:20 pm
This was HILARIOUS! Putting Gadget over your faces at the end was priceless.
I agree with the other guy who said you should have shit pickle as a guide on the next nerd DVD. That’d be great! And if you click him with your DVD BUTTON, it links you to this bonus review.
April 1, 2011 at 3:37 pm
I am begging you to PLEASE put inspector gadget in the next nerd DVD menu. OMG I would buy seven copies. And a quiz with gadget where he insults you like you guys were talking about.
April 1, 2011 at 3:47 pm
I was hoping you guys were going to do this.
April 1, 2011 at 3:57 pm
Could be wors, Man-at-arms could be explaining it… and telling you the moral. “The Glow” should be the name of a horror movie
April 1, 2011 at 4:01 pm
How many times does Gadget say “Button”? lol
The “Glow” was cracking me up too.
Seriously this was one of the funniest videos you guys have done in awhile. Great job.
April 1, 2011 at 4:07 pm
This concept needs to somehow make it into the next AVGN DVD.
April 1, 2011 at 4:14 pm
does anyone else think the t-mobile girl from the advertisments looks like a female version of mike
April 1, 2011 at 4:24 pm
Well, that certainly was one of the weirdest DVD menus I’ve ever seen.
April 1, 2011 at 4:31 pm
This cracked me up. Good. I think this was one of the best skits i’ve seen with you two. MORE!
April 1, 2011 at 4:31 pm
James should do a video on how many times Mike says “like” inappropriately.
April 1, 2011 at 4:36 pm
Jajaj who is stupid enough for not knowing how use a DVD
April 1, 2011 at 4:38 pm
That was the funniest fucking video I’ve seen next to Bible Games.
April 1, 2011 at 4:38 pm
lol that was pretty simple and yet fun :B
April 1, 2011 at 4:43 pm
This kind of “guide” wasn’t entirely uncommon in the early days of the mass adoption of dvd. The first Snow White dvd has the magic mirror guide you through operating the menu. It also makes the occasional snide remark.
April 1, 2011 at 5:00 pm
funnyest shit ever u guys should do more of that just sitting down and trash the fuck out of something
April 1, 2011 at 5:00 pm
OMFG I was laughing so hard my dog thought something was wrong lol
April 1, 2011 at 5:15 pm
damn that dvd is so random…
LMFAO on the voice over part in the end
April 1, 2011 at 5:27 pm
Now I want to watch Get Smart. : )
April 1, 2011 at 5:31 pm
You guys know that Inspector Gadget is probably on the DVD because his show was also produced by DIC, and they just put him on every DIC DVD to explain that shit (even if it is unnecessary)
April 1, 2011 at 6:01 pm
I was laughing pretty hard. This was absurd and nearly surreal.
April 1, 2011 at 6:20 pm
Agent 86–er–Gadget seems unusually competent on this DVD menu.
April 1, 2011 at 6:25 pm
BUTTIN! *sghs* Don Adams would be proud >.>
April 1, 2011 at 6:31 pm
This review clearly states that u guys would be a lot of fun to hang out with.
April 1, 2011 at 6:33 pm
I see that you kept your word on reviewing this DVD from your DVD collection video.
Gadget sounds dumber in these menus than he is in the live action film.
April 1, 2011 at 6:35 pm
I rented this DVD before.
April 1, 2011 at 6:37 pm
Why the hell does he have roller skates?
April 1, 2011 at 6:40 pm
Thanks a lot James and Mike, you just transformed one of my favorite childhood icons into a complete asshole!
At least it’s funny!
April 1, 2011 at 6:53 pm
i recorded when mike says “move the glow around my asshole” and now thats my text message alert/ringtone xD you guys are hilarious!
I just went through a horrid breakup today, and no im not april fools-ing you. i really did. anyways, you guys cheered me up, if such a thing is possible at this point. thanks man, both of you, from the bottom of my shattered black little heart =)
-Rich
April 1, 2011 at 7:13 pm
HAHA Good times I love it
April 1, 2011 at 7:16 pm
I’m laughing so hard right now! That is hysterical!
April 1, 2011 at 7:23 pm
For what itis worth. DiC, apparently, made both Inspector Gadget and the Super Mario Brothers show so that’s why they’re using inspector gadget, not that it makes any more sense for them to use IG on the Mario Brothers DVD. And the DiC logo wasn’t pointed out for the heck of it it was a button too.
April 1, 2011 at 7:28 pm
Hilarious stuff James and Mike… thank you very much for making my day!
April 1, 2011 at 7:53 pm
Hilarious stuff at the end. I had forgotten what an annoying voice/accent Inspector Gadget had
April 1, 2011 at 7:56 pm
jeeeez……stoned much?
April 1, 2011 at 7:58 pm
That was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. You guys really have to do this stuff more. Your imitations of Inspector Gadget were insanely funny. I freaking love you guys!!
April 1, 2011 at 8:02 pm
I was laughing SOOOO hard at the ending, it made my stomach hurt. Haven’t laughed that hard in forever. Thank you.
April 1, 2011 at 8:02 pm
LOL
“Move the glow around my assh0le”
April 1, 2011 at 8:05 pm
Thanks for showing me this insanity. X-D
April 1, 2011 at 8:09 pm
LOL THE ENDING WAS SO FUNNY I STARTED LAUGHING UNCONTROLLABLY
April 1, 2011 at 8:25 pm
Holy shit! James has a beard!
April 1, 2011 at 8:54 pm
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200592917692 I don’t know if you’d be interested James. 1990 world championship NES cart up for auction, only 90 made, one o the rarest NES games in existence. and sorry, didnt know where else to post this. itd be nice if there were a message board for this kind of nonsense, might save ya some emails too
April 1, 2011 at 8:58 pm
It seems pretty obvious that the menu was intended to be used with multiple shows. That’s why Gadget doesn’t ever mention what show is on the disc by name. This way, they could re-use the same menu over and over, and just change the individual graphics for whatever show is on the disc. A good idea if you are trying to make really cheap DVDs. A bad idea if you are trying to make quality DVDs.
April 1, 2011 at 9:28 pm
Nah, they’re not telling you that stuff because they think you’re idiots. Although if you can’t figure out why they did what they did, you probably are.
The show is a cartoon, made for kids. Like, wee tiny ones. It’s kind of impossible to underestimate the intelligence of your audience when the lower bound includes “hasn’t developed object permanence yet”. Some people watching that really might need some of that shit explained to them.
It was Inspector Gadget because, uhduh, DiC owns Gadget, and they wanted to use a fairly recognisable character that they could just slap into any DVD as the help feature. They certainly weren’t going to pay Nintendo for the rights to animate and voice Mario to have him do that shit, pay SEGA to do the same for Sonic in his DVDs, etc. Instead, they’re going to use someone they ALREADY have the rights to in EVERY DVD.
Duhhhhhhh.
January 4, 2013 at 6:37 pm
It sucks anyway.
April 1, 2011 at 9:39 pm
my god what a gem this video is. i guess this video proves it once and for all, that it doesn’t even have to be a game just anything interesting with you and mike’s perspective is so fun and entertaining. and way less work for to make them. should be a regular thing you and mike reviewing various dvds
April 1, 2011 at 10:38 pm
geezus, i laffed myself to tears with this. Thank you guys!
April 1, 2011 at 11:10 pm
Inspector Gadget was in one of the Super Mario Bros episodes. He was in a few live action sequences and Mario and Luigi had to fix him with spare parts from Home Depot or some shit. The video is on Youtube. This is just some silly cross promotion.
April 1, 2011 at 11:17 pm
hahaha that’s so random, I love it. I love how he “welcomes” you to each dvd sub section.
“Welcome to the subtitle menu!
”
”
“Welcome to the game!
April 1, 2011 at 11:17 pm
Nice coverage. I can’t stop laughing thinking about this.
April 1, 2011 at 11:26 pm
“What a smug son of a bitch that Inspector Gadget is.”
Seriously the hardest I’ve laughed in forever…
April 1, 2011 at 11:42 pm
lol
i want to join the conversation
April 2, 2011 at 12:07 am
Guys, that stuff was hilarious! From beginning to end!
That inspector gadget would make a funny character in the AVGN videos. Like, everytime you screw up in a game it would say “You fuKING stupid. Move the GLOW around my BuTT”
So funny
Thanks guys
April 2, 2011 at 12:19 am
My neighbors must have heard me laughing — the ending was hilarious, I couldn’t help myself.
April 2, 2011 at 12:50 am
hahahahahaha xDDDD, que perrón!!!!! that was hilarious!!!!!!!!!!! hahahaha ;D
April 2, 2011 at 1:13 am
O man. LOL. Awesome. You know, Don Adams (the lead role in Get Smart and Inspector Gadget) had a very distinctive voice, and this sounded NOTHING like it. It sounded more like David Lynch, right down to the excessively stating the obvious for too long, but also hints of Lois Griffin! The Glow?? Like, the Last Dragon? If you have the glow, you are a master ninja. You can probably operate a DVD at this point. You still can’t beat Ninja Gaiden, tho.
April 2, 2011 at 1:13 am
BUTTON! man that was funny, thanks guys!
April 2, 2011 at 1:32 am
really? A little too much with the butt-hole commentary… makes me wonder about Mike…
I would have liked to have seen you guys finish the quiz but cool vid
April 2, 2011 at 2:07 am
This video puts me in pain and tears every time I watch it. It’s fucking hilarious.
April 2, 2011 at 2:24 am
Gadget is going his Christopher Walken impression.
April 2, 2011 at 2:24 am
wow i can’t believe someone spent the time to create this inspector gadget help guide. like james said you couldn’t even get to it the help unless you already knew how to use the arrows in the first place. that is funny to me. and it make you wonder how many of dic’s dvd’s got this treatment…. i like how languages has one language, english. but the impersonation did it for me. use the glow! i couldn’t stop laughing at the end.
April 2, 2011 at 2:53 am
That was like watching an episode of Beavis & Butthead!
April 2, 2011 at 2:59 am
This video is so fucking hilarious!
You should do this kind of stuff more often
April 2, 2011 at 3:46 am
Funny sh*t James.
What do you expect from a DVD where it states on the DVD case cover “MOVIE MOMENTS” but actually contains clips from at TV show.
April 2, 2011 at 4:18 am
I also wonder how many lawsuits they would have had if they had incorporated many of Mario’s trademark moves to “The Mario” instead of just basic walking movements.
Head bunting brick walls, believing oneself to be invincible with star power, eating mushrooms, throwing fire balls, going down or in sewage pipes, jump on turtles, sliding down flag poles, being reckless with your life knowing that if you die you have back-up lives…… and so on. Oh and not forgetting obsessively (stocker-ishly braking into privet castle property) chasing after princesses.
April 2, 2011 at 4:37 am
Long winded Gadget is always on duty. “When you got that Glow!”
April 2, 2011 at 4:42 am
You have GOT to have such a DVD menu on your future releases of AVGN!
April 2, 2011 at 5:14 am
That was pretty amazing. I think they probably asked the producer’s 90 year old grandmother to try and use the DVD, only to find her incapable. She was also racist against Italians, and didn’t like being told what to do by them. Inspector Gadget was the only other available option.
April 2, 2011 at 6:03 am
Ok, so there’s no Inspector Gadget anywhere else on that DVD, but saying that Gadget has nothing to do with Mario is actually wrong: he had been one of the guest characters in the live sections, namely in the Defective Gadgetry episode! Check it out!
Anyway I’m quite sure that cameo has nothing to do with this menu… They probably just wanted to do this help guide and used their most famous character.
April 2, 2011 at 7:00 am
Judging from how unspecific Gadget was (he never mentions the name of the show) I would assume that this menu was created for multiple DiC DVDs, and not just this one.
There, mystery solved.
Funny video though.
April 2, 2011 at 7:22 am
My guess is that, like James said, this DVD was one of DiC’s earlier releases and it was made on the cheap with a repurposed IG DVD menu with the SMB Super Show logos shopped in. The Quiz is probably what they spent most of their effort on, and even then they likely just replaced IG episode pics and questions for Super Show ones. As for the Help, I’m thinking they probably expected like very little kids to be using it without parent supervision, maybe?
April 2, 2011 at 7:29 am
Is the Gadget April Fools!? Did James and Mike CGI him in?
April 2, 2011 at 8:39 am
Excellent work guys, Love you both.
April 2, 2011 at 11:39 am
You smug son of a bitch. I could have sworn Michael SWAIM said that. Love Cinee and Love Cracked. Well thats what we call you blokes here at Uni in Australia, Cinee.
April 2, 2011 at 11:51 am
This low-production commentary from James and Mike is better than Overanalyzers episode 1.
This is funnier and more natural sounding and looking.
The off-the-cuff humor is used effectively and believably here, unlike that found in OA.
Even the cuts between showing the clips and showing the guys was easy to watch here, but distracting and annoying in OA.
For those of you who read the comments, do you agree with any of my sentiments?
April 2, 2011 at 12:24 pm
I agree with Drunkmun. The video did have a Beavis and Butthead feel about it. Which can only mean that the video was epic.
April 2, 2011 at 12:41 pm
your DVD remote looks very similar to mine, do you have a VCR/DVD combo machine like I do?
April 2, 2011 at 12:56 pm
k.. here’s my educated guesses to your complaints about this children’s dvd
a. the inspector gadget franchise is owned by DIC. so they got to use him for free.
b. they used him because inspector gadget is good with gadgets n shit, like DVDs.
c. he gives an exhaustive explanation of how to use the dvd menu system because when this dvd was released, dvd systems were new technology and quite different from vhs. also the intended audience is dumb children (as opposed to stoned adults in this case), so a lot of explanation is necessary.
April 2, 2011 at 1:29 pm
That was hilarious and I can’t believe the DVD. And I don’t know why Inspector Gadget is in it either. But why he’s explaining how the DVD works must be because this DVD is for kids to learn how to use the DVD I guess. Just watch the Nostalgia Critic’s episode on this and even he says it is for kids.
