Mike / February 9th, 2011
For anyone that’s interested in the creative process that goes into making an AVGN title card here’s a speed-up video of Mike inking the Star Wars drawing.
February 9, 2011 at 8:19 pm
Whats the song that starts at 6:05, more specifically 6:20.
This is pretty cool, that looked like it took forever. Great work Mike.
February 9, 2011 at 8:26 pm
Great stuff guys. Keep this behind the scenes stuff coming, it’s a great tie-over til the next episodes. Thanks!
February 9, 2011 at 8:32 pm
February 9, 2011 at 8:38 pm
inker? more like a tracer!… no seriously though, this is great. Good job Mike
February 9, 2011 at 8:51 pm
Sweet video. Mike is a very talented Artist. I wish I could draw like that.
I can’t only imagine how long it took for Mike to draw that, let alone ink it.
I always enjoy seeing this behind the scenes stuff.
Mike could totally get away with drawing like James and one other character and whip it up in like 10 minutes, but instead the guy goes above and beyond and draws every character he can possibly fit on the page. It’s unreal.
February 9, 2011 at 8:52 pm
Great job Mike! How much time did it take?
February 9, 2011 at 8:54 pm
Wow is about all I can think to say. Just amazing.
February 9, 2011 at 9:02 pm
As a fellow artist I had to see this the minute I layed eyes on the link. Awesome work man, I wonder if you colored it as well? I was bidding on this thing on ebay but the price skyrocketed. Good work as usual guys. Looking forward to the ET episode, shhhh don’t tell anyone.
February 9, 2011 at 9:13 pm
Thanks for uploading this, love seing this behing the scences stuff. Awsome work Mike! Didn’t know it took so long to ink, I wonder if drawing it too even longer.
February 9, 2011 at 9:25 pm
Mike Matei is God.
February 9, 2011 at 9:28 pm
Oh, fuck off — Mike Matei is NOT God!… He is, however, a talented artist.
February 9, 2011 at 9:39 pm
… on a side note, is there any way you guys (James & Mike) could make up prints of this title card before you auction it off? I get the feeling that it’s going to fetch a pretty penny — more than I can afford, but I would LOVE to get a large print of it.
I dunno, just a thought…
February 9, 2011 at 9:59 pm
February 9, 2011 at 10:04 pm
SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!! Mike, you are VERY talented! I loved watching this 😀
February 9, 2011 at 10:12 pm
My only gripe with this is it didn’t get much appreciation in the actual AVGN episode. As with all title cards it was shown for 4-5 seconds at the beginning, but I honestly didn’t even notice the “99” until I saw this video. Since it’s so involved with so many characters it would have been ‘better’ if the episode slowly panned across each character or zoomed around a little more to fully give people an appreciation for the amount of work that goes in to these.
Similar to the Roger Rabbit or frankly most recent title cards, showing them for a couple seconds just doesn’t do justice for Mike’s work, but that’s what the auctions are for I suppose.
February 9, 2011 at 10:18 pm
Very nice work sir! Is that India Ink and a Windsor Newton brush? Very great brush skills! I ink with Microns and Faber/castells myself. Could never master the brush. You make it look so easy!
February 9, 2011 at 10:20 pm
Also does anyone know what the final art for this went for on ebay? I sure wish I knew it was up. I woulda paid top $ for this.
February 9, 2011 at 10:31 pm
So inspiring. Thank you Mike, you continue to amaze me with your limitless talent.
February 9, 2011 at 10:45 pm
Mike, you are one talented motherfucker.
February 9, 2011 at 10:52 pm
So no jar jar Mike?
February 9, 2011 at 10:59 pm
Damn Mike thats alot of hard work! keep it up 🙂
February 9, 2011 at 11:46 pm
That’s crazy, it looks like there is not one miss stroke. You draw every line with such confidence it’s just insane…insanely awesome! I had no idea how much work these title cards actually take.
February 9, 2011 at 11:59 pm
This one wasn’t for sale in the last auction — the last action : “The Game Glitches” card went for $362.82 |||| “The AVGN Revisited” when for $238.37 || The various AVGN christmas sketches went for about $50 each. If they ever sell this Star Wars one is should fetch like at least $1k. It’s a cross between Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Delights” and the Sistine Chapel. AWESOME WORK MF’er Mike!!!!!
February 10, 2011 at 12:00 am
You are God
February 10, 2011 at 12:27 am
WOOOW!, that’s a lot of work!!!!!!, great job Mike!!!!
February 10, 2011 at 12:45 am
Did you color it with Photoshop or some other program? that inking process was pretty hot shit!
February 10, 2011 at 1:02 am
Wow. Whole new respect for Motherfucker Mike and the effort he puts into these title cards. My husband and I have always taken them for granted, and his sheer talent just blew both of us away.
Rock on, Motherfucker Mike!
February 10, 2011 at 1:07 am
That’s a pretty massive undertaking. I got tired just watching it. Amazing work!
February 10, 2011 at 1:13 am
Is Mike Matei a god?
February 10, 2011 at 1:15 am
How long did this take you in real time!?
February 10, 2011 at 1:19 am
Wow my jaw dropped seeing that. It is amazing that you have that much talent drawing. I do agree that in the star wars episode you should have zoomed in on the title card to show all the detailed characters. I also love how you put all the character’s names before you drew them in the video. I love it when you guys ad these makings of the title cards and AVGN videos. A lot of your fans find this very interesting like I do.Thank you for suprising me with this great video. Mike and James have fun with what you are doing or there is just no point of doing it. Cannot wait for your 100th episode. I hope it will be R.O.B. but I bet there is a lot of people that would like it to be that or E.T. I will be happy with whatever it is though. You always do a good job and put a lot of time and effort in your videos.
February 10, 2011 at 1:33 am
Hello James and Mike,
I’ve been watching these videos with a great deal of enjoyment since it’s inception. I was very happy to see some “behind the scenes” type material like this, especially relating to one of my new favorite nerd videos, #99. Long story short, i was so impressed with the skill and tireless effort Mike put in to this title card that I had to create an account to pass on my respect. Truly amazing work, both of you. Thank you for bringing joy to so many of us.
February 10, 2011 at 2:01 am
wow, just WOW. i’m speechless
Mike, you’re the man
February 10, 2011 at 2:27 am
HOLY FUCK,THATS TONS OF WORK AND DEDICATION.Mad pros to MOFO Mike. I gotta show this to my buddy that does my tats,he’s also a painter and will love to see this vid. I have more mad respects for mofo mike now. I wish i could do that.
February 10, 2011 at 2:32 am
That was awesome, guys! Mike, you’re a heck a shot with a pen! How many hours did you put into that title card? I have to say, you’ve inspired me to give inking a shot (I always drew, never inked, except trancing, if that counts). I think this video is making AVGN fans what talent you pocess. And guys, keep throwing up these behind-the-scene videos every now and then, I think they’re just as fun to watch as a actual Nerd episode. It’s just really cool how a project really comes together. Thanks!
February 10, 2011 at 2:35 am
Awesome video, such a great title card ! I have tons of admiration for artistry and as someone who’s talent consists of stick figure porn at best, I feel like what humans will feel like when aliens with superior technology eventually make first contact.
Keep up the great work guys! Best day of the month is the first Wednesday =).
February 10, 2011 at 3:22 am
Mike this is amazing…I’m blown away at how awesome this title card turned out, and how good you are. The characters are dead on. These videos are strangely relaxing to watch too hahaha make more!
February 10, 2011 at 3:59 am
That will probably the highest selling title cards from any of the previous auctions, it so godly.
i will never be that good 🙁 your are truely amasing mike
February 10, 2011 at 4:02 am

February 10, 2011 at 5:39 am
What is Mike’s day time profession anw?
February 10, 2011 at 6:03 am
Amazing! great work Mike!
February 10, 2011 at 6:15 am
Very sweet video. The behind the scenes videos seem to be the ones I like best. How long did it take you to make the card, from start to finish?
February 10, 2011 at 6:25 am
Everyone else already elaborated so well so…
Mind = Blown
February 10, 2011 at 6:29 am
your art is really inspired work mike. am an artist myself. i just wish i can see the video again in normal motion so that i can watch how the shading and the close hatching are being drawn perfectly. its nice
February 10, 2011 at 6:41 am
Unbelievable, you put so much effort in this one, simply amazing.
By the way, I love the classical score of the AVGN-theme.
February 10, 2011 at 6:52 am
February 10, 2011 at 7:30 am
I would love to see the process of coloring in all that. I hope there is a video of that.
February 10, 2011 at 7:38 am
By far the best title card yet.
I would buy that.
February 10, 2011 at 7:39 am
I can’t help to feel I’ve been listened to. Another great video!
February 10, 2011 at 8:02 am
This is spectacular work and it was very interesting to see the process. I was glad to see this posted as I’ve always liked the title cards. How long did it take you start to finish?
I think these pieces add a great deal to the avgn shows – keep up the great work!
February 10, 2011 at 8:05 am
Wiiee! More motherfucker! 😀
February 10, 2011 at 8:42 am
February 10, 2011 at 8:44 am
Man that is awesome, very nice piece you did here dude. My grandmother started me inking my art in high school, I really miss that. I did Mcfarlanes wolvie/hulk clash IH#340 and spilled the damn ink JUST as I was finishing, I’ll never forget that. Look closely at wolvies left claw.
Keep it up man, my 10 year old boys started really looking forward to the title cards lately and it’s even gotten one of them picking up his pencils again which I’m happy to see.
February 10, 2011 at 8:45 am
I have to admit, the first title cards were pretty shitty. But you’ve improved greatly, this looks awesome.
Whats that music?
February 10, 2011 at 8:46 am
Nice work. As an artist/inker myself, I know how much work this is(and I’m glad to have online shows like the AVGN playing in the background).
Impressed how you use a brush, I have never mastered that myself(still using good old pen and ink).
February 10, 2011 at 8:50 am
Hah, found a WIP-picture I took during inking the image on the Fan Art-section: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VdSCyamdrgo/S2zcOh4U5FI/AAAAAAAAAEc/Z-TRphktPNs/s1600-h/dadaph-avgn-fanart-in-works.jpg
Want to figure out how to do these kinds of speed-up videos sometimes, they are so inspirational to watch.
February 10, 2011 at 9:41 am
Hey Mike great work!!
How long did it take in real?
February 10, 2011 at 9:49 am
Fuckin awesome. You should show the coloring process next!
February 10, 2011 at 11:30 am
now I’m curious how does this all start? before the inking I mean does he take time out ahead of schedule to illustrate the main idea of the drawing before its brought in for inking? like the actual outline that he follows while inking…cause inking took forever it would have to take some time to sketch out the actual artwork into existence….I’m intrigued good video thanks guys can’t wait to see whats next….
February 10, 2011 at 11:33 am
Mike, I thought my friend was a good artist, but even she would bow before your artistic ability. That was absolutely fantastic. Keep up the good work!
February 10, 2011 at 11:40 am
wow that was amazing i didn’t think it was that big but mike you are the unspoken hero man lets see mike in more videos!!!!!
February 10, 2011 at 12:00 pm
Motherfucker Mike has motherfucking skills. talent right there.
February 10, 2011 at 12:20 pm
We can affort the details during the show, becuase that are shown for just brief time.
How many times get a job like this?
February 10, 2011 at 12:48 pm
I remember I paused the star wars video at the title card for a long time to see all the details in it. I really like these behind the scenes videos
I’m surprised Mike has enough patience to do this after seeing how ADD he acts in most videos. Then again, the keyword is probably “acts”
Nice work, dude.
February 10, 2011 at 12:50 pm
I would like to see a “Draw with MotherFucker Mike” series. real talk.
February 10, 2011 at 12:53 pm
@Schloss Funny you mention that, James notes in the McKids ep. that he has/had A.D.D as a child. I have a kid with it too, hell I probably have it. I prefer to call it ‘charm’. 🙂
I’m sure it’s a ton of work but they wouldn’t keep doing it if they didn’t enjoy it. I have to admit though, I’d pay money to hear the conversation they had when James asked Mike if it would be alright if he shat on his face (first bugs ep).
February 10, 2011 at 12:56 pm
Just watching this video kicked my ass! I can only imagine how long this took because this speed drawing video was nearly 10 minutes long! It must of taken Mother fucker Mike a long time!
None the less amazing stuff and keep up the great work!
February 10, 2011 at 1:21 pm
I’d control the world, if I could draw like you.
The first track plays at the ending of the AVGN movie.
February 10, 2011 at 1:47 pm
Cramped hand anyone?
February 10, 2011 at 2:25 pm
That was AMAZING to watch. Mikes got mad skills.
February 10, 2011 at 2:26 pm
I wish I had skills like that you’re awesome Mike
February 10, 2011 at 2:58 pm
Jesus! How long did it take you to do all that!?
Wow, that’s just unbelievable… Thanks a bunch for doing this, you guys. I hope you put that on a Nerd DVD as a feature some time. It’s just too awesome to be an online exclusive!
February 10, 2011 at 3:29 pm
You guys should start selling these title cards as posters! I would definetly buy one!
February 10, 2011 at 3:36 pm
Nice, fun to watch Mike! Is there any reason you don’t use a tablet? Not being an artist, I’m not sure how it would alter the look or the process, but I know of a lot of people that swear by them. Anyway, just wondering.
February 10, 2011 at 3:56 pm
Now I know why they call you Motherfucker Mike: because you’re one talented motherfucker!
February 10, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Mike you MotherFucker! You’re amazing at what you do. I use to draw, still do, but used to too and I gotta say you have some skills.
February 10, 2011 at 5:24 pm
I would buy that for thousands……if I wasn’t broke ass 🙁
February 10, 2011 at 5:35 pm
Is it me or Luke looks like Justin Bieber?, just kidding ^^
Tremendous work right there M.Mike, keep it up, I’d love to see more of your videos!
February 10, 2011 at 5:49 pm
for all the people that think they have no skills to draw, I used to think like you, until i actually developed and honed my skills to draw like that. All it takes is patients and practice and good imagination and i think most of us have that. Also just want to say watching this video made me appreciate the title cards even more. It does boggle the mind when you think about all the different cards he has made.
February 10, 2011 at 5:54 pm
what a masterpiece!!
February 10, 2011 at 6:07 pm
February 10, 2011 at 6:19 pm
What is the song called at 6:10, its not his AVGN theme, but its pretty cool.
First comment got no reply so ill try again :D.
February 10, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Mike, you’re awesome. Wish I could draw like that. I’m a terrible artist.
February 10, 2011 at 7:12 pm
INSANE skills, Mike! I really enjoyed watching that.
February 10, 2011 at 7:28 pm
would be so cool if there was an AVGN Wallpaper page on this site and the title cards we can download as wallpapers.
hell even title card postcards or t shirts 😀
February 10, 2011 at 7:31 pm
This is AMAZING Motherfucker Mike, hope to see more shorts in the future!
February 10, 2011 at 8:24 pm
Amazing stuff! must take a whole day just to ink everything.
another thing I noticed for the first time but is it me or Yoda looks a lot like a Gremlin, except for the pointy teeth.
February 10, 2011 at 8:37 pm
WOW!!!!!! If I hadn’t seen it I probably would not have believed it. It’s nice to know that I you guys all actualy have talent, because I admire what you do, and it would suck if you guys were just some of those people that get lucky and popular throught the internet and don’t really deserve the fame or really any of the attention they recieve. Thanx for the post and keep up the good work guys.
February 10, 2011 at 8:39 pm
BTW how long did it actualy take to do that, I’m sure it differs depending on the title card, but how long did that one take.
February 10, 2011 at 9:14 pm
JESUS CHRIST ALMIGHTY MIKE! Did you sell your soul to satan in order to be able to do all this?! Or just for the level of patience, I used to think I can draw somewhat well. Now I need to re-evaluate my life.
February 10, 2011 at 9:16 pm
Mother Fuckin’ Genious Mike
that’s so cool
February 10, 2011 at 9:24 pm
awsome sauce muther fucker mike!…but what happens should you screw up?
February 10, 2011 at 9:28 pm
That was motherfuckin’ awsome.
Great work Mike.
So much work. Thank you for your time. 🙂
February 10, 2011 at 9:39 pm
Holy blit! And I thought your episodes took effort. Hell no! All praise goes to Mike!
So much work, draw it in pencil, then redraw it, just for a picture that is shown for only at the most 3 seconds.
I think Mike could make a very good cover designer, or a good cartoon animator. 🙂
February 10, 2011 at 10:29 pm
Mike i have a doubt, in the middle of the video you take another bottle cap for the ink, my doubt is, why take another bottle cap? and do you use the same fine brush all the inking? i dont know anything about drawing and im curious.
Thanks in advance
February 10, 2011 at 11:10 pm
Thanks for posting this! When I first saw that Star Wars review I was really impressed with the title card & still think it’s the best one Mike has ever done so to see him inking it was amazing!
Being greedy, but I wish I could see you colour it too! Or a video of one in time lapse from scratch. Again, amazing job Mike. You’re an awesome artist.
February 10, 2011 at 11:32 pm
All I can say is.. Holy fuckin’ shit. That’s awesome.
February 10, 2011 at 11:38 pm
WTF? Where’s my comment?
February 11, 2011 at 12:35 am
Truly amazing. I can only imagine how much that would sell for.
February 11, 2011 at 1:06 am
I’ve never thought about how much effort goes into the title cards. Now that I know, I feel like doing something appreciative for Mike. Of course, there’s nothing creative I can think of, here’s from us to you guys: Thank you for all the work you’ve put into AVGN and your other projects. Keep it real bro’s.
February 11, 2011 at 2:03 am
February 11, 2011 at 3:01 am
mike ur a genoius ur artwork is terrific and u should feel proud
February 11, 2011 at 7:35 am
“my doubt is, why take another bottle cap?”
well you see quite a few caps there, my guess is he use new cap every new day so this would be a 2 days work.
February 11, 2011 at 9:45 am
Very Good! But the game was awesome!
February 11, 2011 at 11:20 am
Wicket! I mean Wicked! Very amazing I never considered how much work was put in those cards, I will look at them in a different way from now on !
February 11, 2011 at 11:32 am
That was just awesome Mike. Fantastic job! I’ve been silently following all of the Cinemassacre stuff for years, but I had to post this time. Just incredible work man. Keep it up! I love the title cards.
February 11, 2011 at 12:26 pm
February 11, 2011 at 12:57 pm
Too bad there’s no mention of how long the title card ACTUALLY took to ink.
February 11, 2011 at 1:25 pm
Thats some sick work there Mike!!!
February 11, 2011 at 2:09 pm
VERY impressive work.
February 11, 2011 at 2:44 pm
February 11, 2011 at 5:33 pm
Holy shit, Mike, holy shit. I will never look at an AVGN title card the same way again.
February 11, 2011 at 5:35 pm
I am stunned! I never realised how much work a “mere titlecard” takes. I envy you Mike. By nature I am a good drawer, even as a kid when other kids were drawing stick figures with hundred sawblade fingers I could draw rather complex characters, but only figures and I never could color or shade them even if my life depended on it. I know that drawing the rough template takes time, and now seeing you coloring and shading it… I am at the loss of words how much effort it really takes.
Perhaps I should grab my pen again and start drawing again. And whip myself to learn coloring and shading properly, though it has been +10 years since I drew anything…
February 11, 2011 at 5:55 pm
You make some awesome drawings Mike, got to admire your work!
February 11, 2011 at 6:05 pm
Amazing. Just fucking amazing.
February 11, 2011 at 7:49 pm
That was awesome. I hope you guys are getting properly compensated for that kind of dedication and skill. Your extraordinary creativity continues to amaze me again and again.
