Oh yeah!! I remember being completely annoyed by how hard the Super Star Wars trilogy was. I rented them for a weekend as a kid and couldn’t get further than the third or fourth stage!!! Can’t wait for episode 100!!! I know it will be epic as all hell.
The Vader scorpion freak out was executed very well. Also enjoyed the automatic win button. I heard the SNES games, especially super return of the jedi were pretty good.
The flipping jump with the lightsabers reminds me of Kirby using the sword or hammer while jumping, kind of hard to not do it constantly since it looks cool and gives you extra defense.
I actually felt like I stop breathing from laughing my ass off from the ending. I was sitting here texting a friend, listening to everything. Next thing I know, I hear a shit sound. Look up, I see a buffalo’s ass and James screaming. I didn’t stop laughing BEFORE I starting typing this comment… Spot on James, great way to ring in the new year dude!
I was just thinking today “When’s a new AVGN coming out?” and I look on here and I’m ecstatic to see it’s a star wars episode! Also, downloaded “Texting of the Bread” and it’s an awesome game and there needs to be more AVGN related apps!
Another job well done James. Very informative and some great laughs. If you ever decide to talk more about Star Wars games, I hope you will think about these: Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Power Battles and the Phantom Menace game for the PC. We’re all looking forward to the 100th video!
I know you said you were gonna keep the new ones more simple in order to save time for bigger things but this is honestly one of the funniest and best ones you have done in a while. Not to say I didn’t enjoy the others immensely but this one is proof to me that you don’t have to be extremely technically complicated to be awesome. Except mebbe the beer droid, I have no idea how long that took. D:
Thank you James! this is the kind of review that reminds me why i love your vids! though towards the end the quality of the video went to hell. other than that though i would say this was a great episode and i cant wait for #100!
Have to say James, I think this is one of the most perfect videos you’ve done yet. Informative, which I love btw, that’s why I watch in the first place.
You still got the ‘Angry Nerd’ in there quite a bit too, the Beat Button was great. The Stopmotion on the Beer Droid, freakin SWEET!!
What was up with the buffalo dump though? Really freaking random!
I absolutely LOVE stop motion though, and I ‘m excited to see you play with it. Keep up the good work and don’t burn your self out!
Holy shit, the Nerd is back! That was awesome James! You delivered above and beyond the call of shitty duty! Thank you so much for this episode! Please, keep making them as good as this one! I can’t wait to see what you do next month!
Great vid. Nice jacket btw. Atari nerd lolz. Really liked the come back of the Nerd since the holidays and all those good times. Keep Rockin’N'Rolling.
Great video. The nerd seemed a little relaxed for the frustration he was being put through but, of course, this appeared to be one of the more informative reviews. Which I think are great personally.
The ending was unexpected and I must say rather amusing. It feels as though you were trying something a little different with this one. It’s good to see you take some creative liberties though.
Top notch episode. I look forward to your coming episodes and encourage you try some more “outside of the nerd box” things in the future.
dude that was awesome!, couldnt stop laughing at the shit at the end, the beat button thing was really cool, and the beer droid is the best invention yet, gotta get one of those!
you just made my day, i really cant wait till next one
It may be a moot point but I just wanted to share that there IS a level select for the Japan only Family Computer Star Wars game, my friends and I used it when we were kids. T
There’s a small red shape near the bottom on the front of the Family Computer, you basically start the game, pull out the red cap/blocker whatever to reveal some connectors. Once you’re on the start screen, you put a key or some other thin metallic object in there and you get to select your stage.
Great video — though it may be overshadowed by the much anticipated 100th AVGN episode.
I think we’re all expecting an E.T. review. I’m hoping that you have the good sense to dispel the great “worst game ever” myth.
I had the game as a child, and I can tell you that it was one of the better titles in the 2600 library. It’s a fun and challenging game that was way ahead of its time.
Come on, James, put an end to the lies and return E.T. to its rightful place in history!
One of your best James the end was pretty random, but hilarious to see the buffalo walk by, then that shit was so unexpected, lol. The boss lifebar was hilarious as well and the look on your face, hahaha. Can’t wait till the next.
I’ve been a fan of yours since ’07 but lately I’ve been watching videos over again and its like a comfort to just watch them and listen. It may sound cheesy, but your videos feel like the viewer is just hanging out with a friend. I haven’t played all games you’ve reviewed, but I can just feel how frustrated I would be if I tried.
I JUST watched your candid video with Pat maybe 20 minutes before this one was uploaded, so I was very pleasantly surprised to have a new nerd video to watch.
I don’t think you have to be drop-kicking shit in every episode to uphold the “nerd,” I think what you are doing is perfect. As you said in the other video, you just have to follow your instinct. The nerd is essentially part of you, so only you can know what feels right.
Great episode, I love seeing what makes the game difficult while also learning why there are limitations and of course just plot-line throw up moments like darth scorpion. Can’t wait for the 100th!
Really great episode, loved the stop motion parts! Keep up the good work James! Oh and the last part was pretty random but I have the impression there is some references to previous episodes or things you said about buffalo, anyway, good stuff!
Oh jeez, when the buffalo shit through his window I happened to be itching my nose. The noise of the window breaking startled me so much I accidentally poked my nose so hard it started to bleed!
Yea this is the stuff, I see you are acting out with rage like you do with your earlier videos, just can use some American movie quotes, and you have yourself a hell of a review. Also, what makes your older episodes great is that you destroyed stuff when ever you get angry, that is fun to watch.
The Glitch Gremlin took over the last few mins of the video. Other then that, it was awesome. I really like your reviews where you cover numerous games, accessories and/or systems.
Can’t wait for #100 Jimmy. E.T. or not, I know it’s gonna be awesome
Man I used to love those Super Star Wars games even with their crazy difficulty. Play the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight PC games if you haven’t. They were so damn good.
My family had that exact same vacuum cleaner you used for your beer droid. It’s astounding the number of things featured in your videos and in the background that I or my family once owned. Maybe those items were just universally purchased?
You should do a quick video that covers some of the non-game or movie related retro/nostalgic things in your collection, similar to your video on the Universal Monster collection.
Good video overall, thanks for doing what you do, James.
I liked how instead of drawing out the video and focusing on just one game you kind of did a mix of several which kept the material fresh. I think you should do stuff like that more often. Can’t wait for #100.
Hey James! Nice Vid as always. But I regret to inform you that watching it on screwattack, I seem to be having troubble at times watching it.
- Id be watching it, and its fine, then the graphics on the video itself get messed up. Idk, Is it JUST me thats having that problem? Please somebody tell me that Iam not alone with this problem.
- Oh man I can’t wait for Episode 100, Maybe have end the 100th video with the Cinimasscure staff in a snap-shot Photo?
@Mike Matei, gotta’ hand it to ya — best title card I’ve seen you do. You must have worked on that for a long time. How long did it take you? Great job!
A pretty entertaining review. Your videos are starting to get funnier again, as there was a time when they seemed a little dead on humor. Either way, you’ve been doing pretty well.
The “Beat-It Button” is a pretty good addition. Hopefully, you bring that one back. As well, the ending to this video just… came out of no where. It’s not normal for you to do things like that, and to be fair, it was quite funny.
Well done. I’m certainly looking forward to your 100th episode.
This was one of the greatest episodes I’ve seen in a while. The buffalo shitting at the end was random, but hilarious. It reminded me of Bob Saget in “Dumb and Dumberer: How Harry Met Loyd.”
James you should have covered more games, was hoping you’d make it up to some ps1 games. You should have done more of a history of star wars games instead of dwelling on the average ones nobody played.
Nice video. Just a side note. You have a stage select screen in the Famicom Star Wars. You just need the Expansion Port (MultiTap) so you can do part of the code in CONTROLLER 3.
Awesome episode James, the nerd is coming back as strong as ever! This is the best episode I’ve seen in a while – this one has the overall style that made your earlier episodes great. A few of the episodes from 2010 felt a little stale to me, like maybe you were tired of doing them (hard to put my finger on why, they just had a different feel to them). But, this episode is just incredible, it’s like classic AVGN again! Just your tone of voice sounds more genuine, and it feels like your heart was really into it, like you’re more inspired. The anger level was just right. Also a very informative video, which I love. My favorite AVGN era was from late 2006 to late 2008, and this video has the same kind of feel as those classic episodes, and I’m stoked. Can’t wait for ep. 100!
Shit that I laughed out loud at: Gotta stop disco from coming back, the beer droid (especially when it attacked you; also, when it threw you one, and it fizzed all over the place – funny shit!), sounds of the ocean, nasty fungus on the ground, worse than a piece of shit – it’s a whole shit, and the boss’s life bar going off the screen (I almost spit out my drink laughing when I saw that – And the look on your face was fucking hilarious!).
I also loved the clips from Mario Bros., Mario 2 and Ghostbusters for comparisons, that was brilliant. And the beat-a-game button was funny as hell. The ending was also great… at least the buffalo didn’t shit in your ear!
I really like the episodes like this, where you review a whole series of games. Also, the episodes with movie-based games tend to be really good too, because you can compare them to the movie, and the resulting expectations of the games, and it provides more material to work with.
A solid 10 out of 10. I can’t get enough AVGN. You haven’t lost your touch at all. Keep doing your videos the way you want to do them, your sense of humor is what we all love about your videos. Ultimately, don’t worry too much about what the fans think is funny (myself included), just focus on what you know is funny – because that is what we find funny as well.
Mike has really improved as an artist. His old stuff, well, it kind of sucked. But this title card is a really nice piece of art. The shading and shadows are really good.
This is one of the best videos you have ever made James! Congratulations! I especially loved your interactions with the droid, and your reaction when Darth Vader turned into a scorpion.
When I saw the episode was about Star Wars, I was thinking, “I’m hoping he’s covering the Famicom Star Wars game that Namco did. There’s great material there to work with!” Boy, I wasn’t disappointed. Your best jokes were during the part when you looked into that Star Wars game, especially when Darth Vader turned into a scorpion (spoofing the Empire Strikes Back plot twist). Though I have to admit, I was hoping for a closing joke where AVGN references that, “It’s as weird as throwing Star Wars characters into a Soul Calibur game” and possibly realized that Namco did do that.
Though, I also love what you did for the beer droid.
I definitely have to admit the PC Star Wars games definitely had the upper had, although I’m not sure if they ever released any PC games that followed the Trilogy.
My favorite Star Wars game definitely has to be X-Wing though.
Good video, James. Well done and not lazy. Cool beer droid you have there.
Oh, and I agree about emulators. It’s really pointless when you can save the game whenever you want. But sometimes when you want to play a game on a console you don’t have, there’s no other choise but to use emulators. (And when you use it, you just can’t resist saving the progress before boss battles or other hard parts.) Sure, it’s not a problem for you. I believe you have every console ever made. But it’s funny that you mentioned emulators in this episode. Super Star Wars trilogy was the first game I had to use emulator to play (and that is why it was easy as hell to me).
And can someone explain the bison taking a shit joke at the end of the episode? I didn’t get it. Does that suppose to be just a random scene that has nothing to do with anything or it is a reference of something?
Like this episode. The line “it’s worse than a piece of shit, it’s a whole shit”… original and cracked me up. I actually prefer these basic episodes with just you, the game, and the camera.
Awesome Episode again James. Loved every part of it. Well am confused on the ending like most are but maybe it will be explained in 100. Beat a game button was just great. It’s the easy button for the game world. I want one. LOL Awesome title card Mike. Both you guys keep up the great work.
The Beer Droid, the buffalo shit, and the making up of phony Star Wars games were my favorite parts. Whenever you struggle at games, I get just as pissed off as you, btw. Thumbs way up!
Great video James. I really like these when you review a series of games spanning a bunch of different systems. And that was quite possibly the best ending to any of your videos thus far. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned for the 100th episode!
BunchProductions.com, just click the Merch button on the upper right hand side of the page and it will bring you to the ScrewAttack store where you can buy AVGN logo T-shirts.
Great Episode.
I never managed to beat the Millenium Falcon Asteroid stage, had it on the Sega. I mean, I didn’t know what the fuck to do for quite some time and it’s not like I had a walkthrough.
Aside from that, I played quite a few Star Wars games and all of them were pretty solid, but damn fucking hard.
And this quote right here has been burned into my mind:
“Rogue Squadron, where is our cover?”
But damn was that an awesome game.
There was a Star Wars game similar to the NES version on the Sega Game Gear. It was slightly different, though. The first level in that version you play as Leia on that ship from the beginning of the movie. There is also no landspeeder map screen.
I remember a trick I found on this game. Right after you get Han from the cantina, get him killed, then go back into the cantina again and get “another” Han. Han’s life meter will now appear to be empty, but he can’t actually be killed (unless he falls off of a cliff).
Great review as usual, I especially liked the beer droid. Just a small correction, Empire Strikes Back for Atari 2600 was actually the first Star Wars game. Star Wars the Arcade Game came about two years later. As a fellow game nerd, I thought you should know.
I thought he hit the nail on the head with what made the Super Star Wars game good/annoying. It’s a shame he didn’t make it further into the NES games. There are some really crazy things to talk about. But if you want to see those, look up filmnstuff on youtube.
amazing little marathon gaming session, it has been a while since I saw one like this. I’m impressed you got it out so early too, I expected having to wait at least a week into the month. I’m waiting with baited breath for your 100th review.
Oh wow! So many memories with the SNES games (primarily return of the Jedi). First few levels anyway. I was too young to have the patience and determination to beat them. Perhaps I should play them again.
Yet another GREAT episode! I never realized how many Star Wars games there were on Atari and NES. The beer droid thing was great (and nicely animated haha). I loved your idea that Luke crashed right into Greedo and killed him instead of him being shot by Han. And the buffalo thing at the end was the most unexpected thing ever but absolutely HILARIOUS!!
One more until 100.
This was a great episode James. I loved the stop motion on the beer droid.
And the title cards just keep getting better and better so good work on that Mike.
Oh and I want a Beat a game button.
Epic episode, definitly one of my favorites!!
I’m really looking out for the 100th episode (O_O”) you’ve really gona a looooong way James, keep it up because the fanbase is ever growing just like the Star Wars galaxy.

February 3, 2011 at 2:45 am
Why does Obi Wan look like he has shit smeared all over his face on the episode card ?
February 3, 2011 at 2:55 am
In the title card, who is the character beside Boba Fett? The one wearing the yellow/beige outfit?
February 3, 2011 at 3:03 am
@ Warrax – When you were picking your nose & it started to bleed, do you say: “BLOOD, BLOOD!! AAAGGHHHH BLOOD!!!”
February 3, 2011 at 3:10 am
The buffalo and glass breaking actually startled me.
February 3, 2011 at 3:11 am
Nice job. But it would’ve been epic if you used the beat it button for Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.
February 3, 2011 at 3:15 am
Saw a lot of ET clips in the intro video. ET FOR EPISODE 100 DO IT!
February 3, 2011 at 3:18 am
A pretty entertaining review. Your videos are starting to get funnier again, as there was a time when they seemed a little dead on humor. Either way, you’ve been doing pretty well.
The “Beat-It Button” is a pretty good addition. Hopefully, you bring that one back. As well, the ending to this video just… came out of no where. It’s not normal for you to do things like that, and to be fair, it was quite funny.
Well done. I’m certainly looking forward to your 100th episode.
February 3, 2011 at 3:23 am
I want to play Fishing for Ackbars!!!
February 3, 2011 at 3:28 am
That was awesome, but what the heck was up with the ending? LOL It just came out of nowhere.
I like your beer droid. We use to use my grandparent’s vacuum as a droid as well. Remember ‘Hardware Wars’?
February 3, 2011 at 3:49 am
Yes Yes Yes! This episode had to be done! Thank you! hahaha
February 3, 2011 at 3:51 am
This was one of the greatest episodes I’ve seen in a while. The buffalo shitting at the end was random, but hilarious. It reminded me of Bob Saget in “Dumb and Dumberer: How Harry Met Loyd.”
February 3, 2011 at 3:59 am
Four words: “Chewie Wookiee Cookie Cooking”
February 3, 2011 at 4:33 am
Great video, Star Wars man! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned for episode 100
February 3, 2011 at 4:39 am
Dude Mike, thats an insane title card, you have some pretty wicked drawing skills my man. Oh and ya great video James lol.
February 3, 2011 at 4:49 am
Yaaay what i have waited for this episode! You are so awesome James
February 3, 2011 at 5:08 am
The “BEAT-A-GAME” Button…was quite possibly the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen AVGN do. James’ face after he beats Zelda…almost pee’d my pants.
February 3, 2011 at 5:16 am
James you should have covered more games, was hoping you’d make it up to some ps1 games. You should have done more of a history of star wars games instead of dwelling on the average ones nobody played.
February 3, 2011 at 5:30 am
“You should have done more of a history of star wars games instead of dwelling on the average ones nobody played”
hum thats the whole point of the AVGN isn’t it?
Grat vid as always james!
Also hope to see more of your other projects soon.. I’m starving for another Board james video!
February 3, 2011 at 6:14 am
I want to play Wookie Cookie Cookin’.
February 3, 2011 at 6:26 am
Nice video. Just a side note. You have a stage select screen in the Famicom Star Wars. You just need the Expansion Port (MultiTap) so you can do part of the code in CONTROLLER 3.
February 3, 2011 at 6:53 am
February 3, 2011 at 6:54 am
“Hey, Luke…” —- “Get over here!”
February 3, 2011 at 7:20 am
That is by far the best artwork Mike has ever done.
Congrats.
February 3, 2011 at 7:23 am
Mike has really improved as an artist. His old stuff, well, it kind of sucked. But this title card is a really nice piece of art. The shading and shadows are really good.
February 3, 2011 at 7:31 am
brilliant episode, james!
February 3, 2011 at 8:01 am
This is one of the best videos you have ever made James! Congratulations! I especially loved your interactions with the droid, and your reaction when Darth Vader turned into a scorpion.
February 3, 2011 at 8:14 am
February 3, 2011 at 8:23 am
Great episode!
Thee beer droid was awesome
I definitely have to admit the PC Star Wars games definitely had the upper had, although I’m not sure if they ever released any PC games that followed the Trilogy.
My favorite Star Wars game definitely has to be X-Wing though.
February 3, 2011 at 8:25 am
Sweet can’t wait to get home and watch it with the kiddos. Nice title card Mike!
February 3, 2011 at 8:41 am
February 3, 2011 at 8:56 am
very good episode
February 3, 2011 at 9:06 am
Like this episode. The line “it’s worse than a piece of shit, it’s a whole shit”… original and cracked me up. I actually prefer these basic episodes with just you, the game, and the camera.
February 3, 2011 at 9:15 am
Awesome Episode again James. Loved every part of it. Well am confused on the ending like most are but maybe it will be explained in 100. Beat a game button was just great. It’s the easy button for the game world. I want one. LOL Awesome title card Mike. Both you guys keep up the great work.
February 3, 2011 at 9:23 am
The Beer Droid, the buffalo shit, and the making up of phony Star Wars games were my favorite parts. Whenever you struggle at games, I get just as pissed off as you, btw. Thumbs way up!
February 3, 2011 at 9:29 am
Yes! Finally! I Love your videos, James! So much! I would buy your T-shirt if I would know how.
February 3, 2011 at 9:33 am
Great video James. I really like these when you review a series of games spanning a bunch of different systems. And that was quite possibly the best ending to any of your videos thus far. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned for the 100th episode!
February 3, 2011 at 9:34 am
XD The whole video was really hilarious! Great job on it as ever James
February 3, 2011 at 9:34 am
BunchProductions.com, just click the Merch button on the upper right hand side of the page and it will bring you to the ScrewAttack store where you can buy AVGN logo T-shirts.
February 3, 2011 at 9:42 am
Awesome episode, well done and keep them coming!
February 3, 2011 at 9:43 am
Oh, FUCK yeah! I’ve been waiting for this since the first fucking episode. And it met all expectations.
By the way, Jedi Knight is the most awesome Game in the Star Wars Franchise. Period.
February 3, 2011 at 9:46 am
Great Episode.
I never managed to beat the Millenium Falcon Asteroid stage, had it on the Sega. I mean, I didn’t know what the fuck to do for quite some time and it’s not like I had a walkthrough.
Aside from that, I played quite a few Star Wars games and all of them were pretty solid, but damn fucking hard.
And this quote right here has been burned into my mind:
“Rogue Squadron, where is our cover?”
But damn was that an awesome game.
February 3, 2011 at 9:56 am
I am a huge star wars fan. Your video was awesome. I especially love the you know whats bullshit bull cameo lol hilarious.
February 3, 2011 at 10:24 am
Awesome review!!!
My all time favorite Star Wars Game is Jedi Academy, but the Snes games were also pretty cool.
February 3, 2011 at 10:25 am
I highly recommend Knights of the Old Republic if you haven’t played it yet.
February 3, 2011 at 10:33 am
There was a Star Wars game similar to the NES version on the Sega Game Gear. It was slightly different, though. The first level in that version you play as Leia on that ship from the beginning of the movie. There is also no landspeeder map screen.
I remember a trick I found on this game. Right after you get Han from the cantina, get him killed, then go back into the cantina again and get “another” Han. Han’s life meter will now appear to be empty, but he can’t actually be killed (unless he falls off of a cliff).
February 3, 2011 at 10:33 am
Kick-ass title card! Could I have a download link to make it my desktop background? Regardless, props to MF MIKE.
February 3, 2011 at 10:35 am
hahaha!! I love the video!! and the title card is awesome =O!!!!!!!!
February 3, 2011 at 10:45 am
Awesome title card motherfucker mike and awesome video AVGN! I’m glad you’r back on the screen because the other one you barely shown up!
February 3, 2011 at 10:54 am
Love my star wars film so this was really funny to watch .
February 3, 2011 at 11:06 am
Great review as usual, I especially liked the beer droid. Just a small correction, Empire Strikes Back for Atari 2600 was actually the first Star Wars game. Star Wars the Arcade Game came about two years later. As a fellow game nerd, I thought you should know.
February 3, 2011 at 11:24 am
I thought he hit the nail on the head with what made the Super Star Wars game good/annoying. It’s a shame he didn’t make it further into the NES games. There are some really crazy things to talk about. But if you want to see those, look up filmnstuff on youtube.
February 3, 2011 at 11:29 am
amazing little marathon gaming session, it has been a while since I saw one like this. I’m impressed you got it out so early too, I expected having to wait at least a week into the month. I’m waiting with baited breath for your 100th review.
February 3, 2011 at 11:35 am
Oh wow! So many memories with the SNES games (primarily return of the Jedi). First few levels anyway. I was too young to have the patience and determination to beat them. Perhaps I should play them again.
February 3, 2011 at 11:41 am
Yet another GREAT episode! I never realized how many Star Wars games there were on Atari and NES. The beer droid thing was great (and nicely animated haha). I loved your idea that Luke crashed right into Greedo and killed him instead of him being shot by Han. And the buffalo thing at the end was the most unexpected thing ever but absolutely HILARIOUS!!
CAN’T WAIT FOR EPISODE 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 3, 2011 at 11:43 am
Not my favorite review, but I did enjoy the droid beer bot.
Great title card also!
February 3, 2011 at 12:02 pm
One more until 100.
This was a great episode James. I loved the stop motion on the beer droid.
And the title cards just keep getting better and better so good work on that Mike.
Oh and I want a Beat a game button.
February 3, 2011 at 12:16 pm
Epic episode, definitly one of my favorites!!
I’m really looking out for the 100th episode (O_O”) you’ve really gona a looooong way James, keep it up because the fanbase is ever growing just like the Star Wars galaxy.
February 3, 2011 at 12:38 pm
Mr. Nerd— you’ve done it again!… this review was really great =)
February 3, 2011 at 12:56 pm
I’m sure the ending of the episode promises us what comes next in the 100th episode. It’ll be quite an event!
