Oh yeah!! I remember being completely annoyed by how hard the Super Star Wars trilogy was. I rented them for a weekend as a kid and couldn’t get further than the third or fourth stage!!! Can’t wait for episode 100!!! I know it will be epic as all hell.

  • February 3, 2011 at 12:46 am

    Great as always. *thumbs up*

    February 3, 2011 at 12:59 am

The Vader scorpion freak out was executed very well. Also enjoyed the automatic win button. I heard the SNES games, especially super return of the jedi were pretty good.

The flipping jump with the lightsabers reminds me of Kirby using the sword or hammer while jumping, kind of hard to not do it constantly since it looks cool and gives you extra defense.

I actually felt like I stop breathing from laughing my ass off from the ending. I was sitting here texting a friend, listening to everything. Next thing I know, I hear a shit sound. Look up, I see a buffalo’s ass and James screaming. I didn’t stop laughing BEFORE I starting typing this comment… Spot on James, great way to ring in the new year dude!

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:02 am

I was just thinking today “When’s a new AVGN coming out?” and I look on here and I’m ecstatic to see it’s a star wars episode! Also, downloaded “Texting of the Bread” and it’s an awesome game and there needs to be more AVGN related apps!

Another job well done James. Very informative and some great laughs. If you ever decide to talk more about Star Wars games, I hope you will think about these: Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Power Battles and the Phantom Menace game for the PC. We’re all looking forward to the 100th video!

    February 3, 2011 at 1:07 am

    unbelievable!! Fucking awesome video!!!!

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:07 am

I know you said you were gonna keep the new ones more simple in order to save time for bigger things but this is honestly one of the funniest and best ones you have done in a while. Not to say I didn’t enjoy the others immensely but this one is proof to me that you don’t have to be extremely technically complicated to be awesome. Except mebbe the beer droid, I have no idea how long that took. D:

  • Undertaker

    February 3, 2011 at 1:14 am

Thank you James! this is the kind of review that reminds me why i love your vids! though towards the end the quality of the video went to hell. other than that though i would say this was a great episode and i cant wait for #100!

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:14 am

Have to say James, I think this is one of the most perfect videos you’ve done yet. Informative, which I love btw, that’s why I watch in the first place.
You still got the ‘Angry Nerd’ in there quite a bit too, the Beat Button was great. The Stopmotion on the Beer Droid, freakin SWEET!!
What was up with the buffalo dump though? Really freaking random!

I absolutely LOVE stop motion though, and I ‘m excited to see you play with it. Keep up the good work and don’t burn your self out!

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:15 am

Holy shit, the Nerd is back! That was awesome James! You delivered above and beyond the call of shitty duty! Thank you so much for this episode! Please, keep making them as good as this one! I can’t wait to see what you do next month!

  • AtlasNR

    February 3, 2011 at 1:18 am

Great video. The nerd seemed a little relaxed for the frustration he was being put through but, of course, this appeared to be one of the more informative reviews. Which I think are great personally.

The ending was unexpected and I must say rather amusing. It feels as though you were trying something a little different with this one. It’s good to see you take some creative liberties though.

Top notch episode. I look forward to your coming episodes and encourage you try some more “outside of the nerd box” things in the future.

Last night I just finished playing all the Jedi knight games and then James gives us this super awesome video. Thanks AVGN team.

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:20 am

dude that was awesome!, couldnt stop laughing at the shit at the end, the beat button thing was really cool, and the beer droid is the best invention yet, gotta get one of those!

    February 3, 2011 at 1:43 am

Wouldn’t it have made more sense if it was a BANTHA that took a shit in your room as opposed to just a buffalo?

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:53 am

Yes! Only one more episode until the epic AVGN #100!!!

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:53 am

It may be a moot point but I just wanted to share that there IS a level select for the Japan only Family Computer Star Wars game, my friends and I used it when we were kids. T

There’s a small red shape near the bottom on the front of the Family Computer, you basically start the game, pull out the red cap/blocker whatever to reveal some connectors. Once you’re on the start screen, you put a key or some other thin metallic object in there and you get to select your stage.

I know it sounds crazy, but seriously, it works!

  • recompile

    February 3, 2011 at 1:54 am

Great video — though it may be overshadowed by the much anticipated 100th AVGN episode.

I think we’re all expecting an E.T. review. I’m hoping that you have the good sense to dispel the great “worst game ever” myth.

I had the game as a child, and I can tell you that it was one of the better titles in the 2600 library. It’s a fun and challenging game that was way ahead of its time.

Come on, James, put an end to the lies and return E.T. to its rightful place in history!

  • Dirty Jared

    February 3, 2011 at 1:55 am

Good stuff. What was up with the end though?

  • angelspawn77

    February 3, 2011 at 1:57 am

One of your best James :D the end was pretty random, but hilarious to see the buffalo walk by, then that shit was so unexpected, lol. The boss lifebar was hilarious as well and the look on your face, hahaha. Can’t wait till the next.

  • Mr. Vermin

    February 3, 2011 at 2:01 am

I’ve been a fan of yours since ’07 but lately I’ve been watching videos over again and its like a comfort to just watch them and listen. It may sound cheesy, but your videos feel like the viewer is just hanging out with a friend. I haven’t played all games you’ve reviewed, but I can just feel how frustrated I would be if I tried.

I JUST watched your candid video with Pat maybe 20 minutes before this one was uploaded, so I was very pleasantly surprised to have a new nerd video to watch.

I don’t think you have to be drop-kicking shit in every episode to uphold the “nerd,” I think what you are doing is perfect. As you said in the other video, you just have to follow your instinct. The nerd is essentially part of you, so only you can know what feels right.

Great episode, I love seeing what makes the game difficult while also learning why there are limitations and of course just plot-line throw up moments like darth scorpion. Can’t wait for the 100th!

  • Warrax

    February 3, 2011 at 2:05 am

Really great episode, loved the stop motion parts! Keep up the good work James! Oh and the last part was pretty random but I have the impression there is some references to previous episodes or things you said about buffalo, anyway, good stuff!

  • gnsquared

    February 3, 2011 at 2:07 am

Oh jeez, when the buffalo shit through his window I happened to be itching my nose. The noise of the window breaking startled me so much I accidentally poked my nose so hard it started to bleed!

  • Dr.That1guy

    February 3, 2011 at 2:07 am

Ahhhh Shadows of the Empire. I’m 15 and I even had that game. It was the shit. Great job James. I enjoiyed it.

  • RKOredux

    February 3, 2011 at 2:07 am

That had the greatest ending I have ever seen. Period.

  • Gamer

    February 3, 2011 at 2:07 am

Yea this is the stuff, I see you are acting out with rage like you do with your earlier videos, just can use some American movie quotes, and you have yourself a hell of a review. Also, what makes your older episodes great is that you destroyed stuff when ever you get angry, that is fun to watch.

  • caseclosed1

    February 3, 2011 at 2:14 am

shit crashing into the WINDOW.. epic!

  • madcow

    February 3, 2011 at 2:15 am

The Glitch Gremlin took over the last few mins of the video. Other then that, it was awesome. I really like your reviews where you cover numerous games, accessories and/or systems.

Can’t wait for #100 Jimmy. E.T. or not, I know it’s gonna be awesome

  • Dresden

    February 3, 2011 at 2:15 am

Man I used to love those Super Star Wars games even with their crazy difficulty. Play the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight PC games if you haven’t. They were so damn good.

  • mcnerven

    February 3, 2011 at 2:24 am

My family had that exact same vacuum cleaner you used for your beer droid. It’s astounding the number of things featured in your videos and in the background that I or my family once owned. Maybe those items were just universally purchased?

You should do a quick video that covers some of the non-game or movie related retro/nostalgic things in your collection, similar to your video on the Universal Monster collection.

  • Filmmassacre

    February 3, 2011 at 2:24 am

I haven’t even play the video yet but i just know it’s gonna be epic!

    February 3, 2011 at 2:29 am

Good video overall, thanks for doing what you do, James.

I liked how instead of drawing out the video and focusing on just one game you kind of did a mix of several which kept the material fresh. I think you should do stuff like that more often. Can’t wait for #100.

  • February 3, 2011 at 2:30 am

Fuckin’ awesome stop motion on the beer droid.

  • Reputator

Hey James! Nice Vid as always. But I regret to inform you that watching it on screwattack, I seem to be having troubble at times watching it.
    - Id be watching it, and its fine, then the graphics on the video itself get messed up. Idk, Is it JUST me thats having that problem? Please somebody tell me that Iam not alone with this problem.

    - Oh man I can’t wait for Episode 100, Maybe have end the 100th video with the Cinimasscure staff in a snap-shot Photo?

    February 3, 2011 at 2:42 am

Why does Obi Wan look like he has shit smeared all over his face on the episode card ?

  • Auximinus

@ Warrax – When you were picking your nose & it started to bleed, do you say: “BLOOD, BLOOD!! AAAGGHHHH BLOOD!!!”

  • February 3, 2011 at 3:10 am

The buffalo and glass breaking actually startled me.

  • Karate Kid Icarus

    February 3, 2011 at 3:11 am

Nice job. But it would’ve been epic if you used the beat it button for Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker.

  • February 3, 2011 at 3:15 am

Saw a lot of ET clips in the intro video. ET FOR EPISODE 100 DO IT!

  • LordGavinMacLean

    February 3, 2011 at 3:18 am

A pretty entertaining review. Your videos are starting to get funnier again, as there was a time when they seemed a little dead on humor. Either way, you’ve been doing pretty well.

The “Beat-It Button” is a pretty good addition. Hopefully, you bring that one back. As well, the ending to this video just… came out of no where. It’s not normal for you to do things like that, and to be fair, it was quite funny.

Well done. I’m certainly looking forward to your 100th episode.

  • Damiz

    February 3, 2011 at 3:23 am

I want to play Fishing for Ackbars!!!

  • February 3, 2011 at 3:28 am

That was awesome, but what the heck was up with the ending? LOL It just came out of nowhere.

I like your beer droid. We use to use my grandparent’s vacuum as a droid as well. Remember ‘Hardware Wars’?

  • Analbag Thats Me

    February 3, 2011 at 3:49 am

Yes Yes Yes! This episode had to be done! Thank you! hahaha

  • February 3, 2011 at 3:51 am

This was one of the greatest episodes I’ve seen in a while. The buffalo shitting at the end was random, but hilarious. It reminded me of Bob Saget in “Dumb and Dumberer: How Harry Met Loyd.”

Yaaay what i have waited for this episode! You are so awesome James :)

  • February 3, 2011 at 5:08 am

The “BEAT-A-GAME” Button…was quite possibly the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen AVGN do. James’ face after he beats Zelda…almost pee’d my pants.

  • DirkDiggler

    February 3, 2011 at 5:16 am

James you should have covered more games, was hoping you’d make it up to some ps1 games. You should have done more of a history of star wars games instead of dwelling on the average ones nobody played.

  • RetroMerch

    February 3, 2011 at 5:30 am

“You should have done more of a history of star wars games instead of dwelling on the average ones nobody played”

hum thats the whole point of the AVGN isn’t it?

    Grat vid as always james!

Also hope to see more of your other projects soon.. I’m starving for another Board james video!

  • justman

    February 3, 2011 at 6:26 am

Nice video. Just a side note. You have a stage select screen in the Famicom Star Wars. You just need the Expansion Port (MultiTap) so you can do part of the code in CONTROLLER 3.

  • Fredward

    February 3, 2011 at 6:53 am

Awesome episode James, the nerd is coming back as strong as ever! This is the best episode I’ve seen in a while – this one has the overall style that made your earlier episodes great. A few of the episodes from 2010 felt a little stale to me, like maybe you were tired of doing them (hard to put my finger on why, they just had a different feel to them). But, this episode is just incredible, it’s like classic AVGN again! Just your tone of voice sounds more genuine, and it feels like your heart was really into it, like you’re more inspired. The anger level was just right. Also a very informative video, which I love. My favorite AVGN era was from late 2006 to late 2008, and this video has the same kind of feel as those classic episodes, and I’m stoked. Can’t wait for ep. 100!

Shit that I laughed out loud at: Gotta stop disco from coming back, the beer droid (especially when it attacked you; also, when it threw you one, and it fizzed all over the place – funny shit!), sounds of the ocean, nasty fungus on the ground, worse than a piece of shit – it’s a whole shit, and the boss’s life bar going off the screen (I almost spit out my drink laughing when I saw that – And the look on your face was fucking hilarious!).

I also loved the clips from Mario Bros., Mario 2 and Ghostbusters for comparisons, that was brilliant. And the beat-a-game button was funny as hell. The ending was also great… at least the buffalo didn’t shit in your ear!

I really like the episodes like this, where you review a whole series of games. Also, the episodes with movie-based games tend to be really good too, because you can compare them to the movie, and the resulting expectations of the games, and it provides more material to work with.

A solid 10 out of 10. I can’t get enough AVGN. You haven’t lost your touch at all. Keep doing your videos the way you want to do them, your sense of humor is what we all love about your videos. Ultimately, don’t worry too much about what the fans think is funny (myself included), just focus on what you know is funny – because that is what we find funny as well.

    Congrats.

Mike has really improved as an artist. His old stuff, well, it kind of sucked. But this title card is a really nice piece of art. The shading and shadows are really good.

  • February 3, 2011 at 7:31 am

    brilliant episode, james!

  • Astrodogmedia

    February 3, 2011 at 8:01 am

This is one of the best videos you have ever made James! Congratulations! I especially loved your interactions with the droid, and your reaction when Darth Vader turned into a scorpion.

  • Cless Aileron

    February 3, 2011 at 8:14 am

When I saw the episode was about Star Wars, I was thinking, “I’m hoping he’s covering the Famicom Star Wars game that Namco did. There’s great material there to work with!” Boy, I wasn’t disappointed. Your best jokes were during the part when you looked into that Star Wars game, especially when Darth Vader turned into a scorpion (spoofing the Empire Strikes Back plot twist). Though I have to admit, I was hoping for a closing joke where AVGN references that, “It’s as weird as throwing Star Wars characters into a Soul Calibur game” and possibly realized that Namco did do that.

Though, I also love what you did for the beer droid.

  • captaintyler888

    February 3, 2011 at 8:23 am

    Great episode!

Thee beer droid was awesome ;)

I definitely have to admit the PC Star Wars games definitely had the upper had, although I’m not sure if they ever released any PC games that followed the Trilogy.

My favorite Star Wars game definitely has to be X-Wing though.

  • February 3, 2011 at 8:25 am

Sweet can’t wait to get home and watch it with the kiddos. Nice title card Mike!

  • February 3, 2011 at 8:41 am

Good video, James. Well done and not lazy. Cool beer droid you have there.
Oh, and I agree about emulators. It’s really pointless when you can save the game whenever you want. But sometimes when you want to play a game on a console you don’t have, there’s no other choise but to use emulators. (And when you use it, you just can’t resist saving the progress before boss battles or other hard parts.) Sure, it’s not a problem for you. I believe you have every console ever made. But it’s funny that you mentioned emulators in this episode. Super Star Wars trilogy was the first game I had to use emulator to play (and that is why it was easy as hell to me).
And can someone explain the bison taking a shit joke at the end of the episode? I didn’t get it. Does that suppose to be just a random scene that has nothing to do with anything or it is a reference of something?

  • Jel-K

  • Linearmode

    February 3, 2011 at 9:06 am

    February 3, 2011 at 9:15 am

Awesome Episode again James. Loved every part of it. Well am confused on the ending like most are but maybe it will be explained in 100. Beat a game button was just great. It’s the easy button for the game world. I want one. LOL Awesome title card Mike. Both you guys keep up the great work.

  • asnaes1981

    February 3, 2011 at 9:23 am

The Beer Droid, the buffalo shit, and the making up of phony Star Wars games were my favorite parts. Whenever you struggle at games, I get just as pissed off as you, btw. Thumbs way up!

Great video James. I really like these when you review a series of games spanning a bunch of different systems. And that was quite possibly the best ending to any of your videos thus far. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got planned for the 100th episode!

  • February 3, 2011 at 9:46 am

    Great Episode.
I never managed to beat the Millenium Falcon Asteroid stage, had it on the Sega. I mean, I didn’t know what the fuck to do for quite some time and it’s not like I had a walkthrough.

Aside from that, I played quite a few Star Wars games and all of them were pretty solid, but damn fucking hard.

And this quote right here has been burned into my mind:
“Rogue Squadron, where is our cover?”
But damn was that an awesome game.

    Awesome review!!!
My all time favorite Star Wars Game is Jedi Academy, but the Snes games were also pretty cool.

  • February 3, 2011 at 10:25 am

I highly recommend Knights of the Old Republic if you haven’t played it yet.

    February 3, 2011 at 10:33 am

There was a Star Wars game similar to the NES version on the Sega Game Gear. It was slightly different, though. The first level in that version you play as Leia on that ship from the beginning of the movie. There is also no landspeeder map screen.

I remember a trick I found on this game. Right after you get Han from the cantina, get him killed, then go back into the cantina again and get “another” Han. Han’s life meter will now appear to be empty, but he can’t actually be killed (unless he falls off of a cliff).

Great review as usual, I especially liked the beer droid. Just a small correction, Empire Strikes Back for Atari 2600 was actually the first Star Wars game. Star Wars the Arcade Game came about two years later. As a fellow game nerd, I thought you should know.

  • adecourv

    February 3, 2011 at 11:24 am

I thought he hit the nail on the head with what made the Super Star Wars game good/annoying. It’s a shame he didn’t make it further into the NES games. There are some really crazy things to talk about. But if you want to see those, look up filmnstuff on youtube.

amazing little marathon gaming session, it has been a while since I saw one like this. I’m impressed you got it out so early too, I expected having to wait at least a week into the month. I’m waiting with baited breath for your 100th review.

  • Johnny Deformed

    February 3, 2011 at 11:35 am

Oh wow! So many memories with the SNES games (primarily return of the Jedi). First few levels anyway. I was too young to have the patience and determination to beat them. Perhaps I should play them again.

  • darkknightdetec

    February 3, 2011 at 11:41 am

Yet another GREAT episode! I never realized how many Star Wars games there were on Atari and NES. The beer droid thing was great (and nicely animated haha). I loved your idea that Luke crashed right into Greedo and killed him instead of him being shot by Han. And the buffalo thing at the end was the most unexpected thing ever but absolutely HILARIOUS!!

    CAN’T WAIT FOR EPISODE 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • February 3, 2011 at 11:43 am

Not my favorite review, but I did enjoy the droid beer bot.

    Great title card also!

  • Jimbo

    February 3, 2011 at 12:02 pm

    One more until 100.
This was a great episode James. I loved the stop motion on the beer droid.
And the title cards just keep getting better and better so good work on that Mike.
Oh and I want a Beat a game button.

Mr. Nerd— you’ve done it again!… this review was really great =)

  • February 3, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I’m sure the ending of the episode promises us what comes next in the 100th episode. It’ll be quite an event!

  • February 3, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Completely awesome man. I loved how the beer bot launched Yuengling. I wish I had a beer bot that launched Yuengling. Or at least a store that stocked Yuengling.

I wish I had a beer droid :( also at the ending when the buffalo shits in your room I could of sworn you were going find ET in it and then the episode ends leading to the next episode. Was that scene complete random or are you going to revisit the scene in the next episode?

  • Tiago Rodrigues

  • darkknightdetec

    February 3, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Oh and are we actually going to see a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in your ear next episode? Cuz that would be awsummmm..

Also for all the E.T. speculations: I thought I remember James saying at some point that E.T. will NOT be the 100th episode. I’m guessing he’s saving it for the movie?

that buffalo shitting through the window was so random and out of place that it turned out to be so fucking funny, the funniest part of the whole video. omg i couldn’t stop laughing, and it was relevant because there’s a buffalo in his AVGN theme…it’s hilarious because his reaction is perfectly timed to the breaking of the window and he sounds so sincere in his surprise and dismay over it…the glass on the floor with the shit…oh my god, great stuff

  • SpeedyEric

    February 3, 2011 at 1:48 pm

I’m a big Star Wars fan, and I gotta say that this episode of AVGN was worth the wait. =D

Actually, the VERY FIRST Star Wars console game was “The Empire Strikes Back” for Atari.

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is my favorite Star Wars character, and I was as shock as you were when we see him turn into a big-headed scorpion.

That Beat-a-Game Button can tell Game Genie to go screw itself.

The earlyest Star Wars game I owned and played war “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” on the PC, and I loved it.

Great episode, James. Good luck with Episode 100.

  • February 3, 2011 at 2:49 pm

I thought that this episode was great! Especially at the end with the buffalo taking a shit through the window, that was freaking hilarious. The Super Star Wars games were freaking unbelievably hard, and so were the 2 games on the NES.

Sucks that you didn’t mention the Knights of The Old Republic games on the PC and Xbox though :(

Can’t wait to see what you do for the 100th episode next month :)

This is one of the greatest videos you have done. I’ve been waiting for you to do a review on the famicom star wars game. I saw it on game trailers retrospective on the entire star wars game history. I tought to myself, that would be perfect for the nerd to review and i thank you for that. but let me tell ya… there’s more veird stuff in there. I don’t know what they were thinking? The beer droid was very clever and the ending was very unexpected, but so darn funny. Pure gold this one!

  • BigSab

    February 3, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Star Wars games a notorious for being difficilt. Not so much these days but back in the day slapping in a Star Wars cart meant that you were up for some challenge, frustration, and anger. When I saw the buffalo outside the window I almost shit! Then HE did! hahahahah! That was fuckin great!

  • Rasmus

    February 3, 2011 at 4:21 pm

How many James Rolfes does it take to drink a full case of rolling rock in a matter of minutes? Only 1, provided he has a horribly bad game to play and his beer droid by his side. He might even through a Yuenger in there.

Awesome title card Mike. All of those characters to draw, and you did them all great. I’d say that’s the card with the 2nd most characters. Can’t remember the 1st, but I know there was a freaking lot, and they were all great.

  • Zelda_Boy

    February 3, 2011 at 7:01 pm

Great review James. My friends and I were having a LAN drinking some homebrew Bourbon and I thought I would check if there was a new video out and it must have been my lucky night as it was out. Probably one of your best videos, but that could of been the homebrew. lol.

    Good job man.

  • Schloss Ritter

    February 3, 2011 at 7:25 pm

I played the heck out of The Empire Strikes Back on the old 2600 back then.

The false Vader turning into a creature reminds me of when you use fire power to kill a Bowser in SMB1′s worlds 1-7 to find out it was really a lesser enemy.

    Nice sequence about cheat devices.

My favorite from the franchise is still the X-Wing PC games.

    *spoiler*
    Bullshit! tie-in at the end.

    LMFAO!!! Buffalo shit!!!

  • scronan

    February 3, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Some great nostalgia in this video – I was a very young kid in the early 80s and I remember when those Atari 2600 games came out and my family owned all of them. It was frustrating to play them when we could walk a few blocks down to the local arcade and play the super badass Starwars machine…but for rainy days (especially when you ran out of quarters), at least we had something to do at home. Really brought me back to those days when Star Wars was the coolest thing in the world. ;)

Never played the NES or SNES games…interesting to see them too. Great video James – I look forward to seeing whatever crazy shit you have planned for Episode 100!

  • February 3, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Hey james have you ever played Kotor? Star wars knights of the old republic. its the best star wars game/best rpg game of the last generation of games

  • February 3, 2011 at 8:52 pm

I just watched the episode again, and the ending had a specific purpose. If you watched the intro he gave the middle finger to E.T, well at the end look whos sitting on the bookshelf when he just so happens to go over to the window.. MR E.T himself. Awesome way to display your 100th episode I can’t believe no one caught that.

  • TheRetroHero

    February 3, 2011 at 9:18 pm

I loved the new way you talked because at the end when the buffalo takes a shit, that IS how a person acts like when something like that happens. Also, congrats on the 99th video, (can’t wait for the 100th) and this video was a 10/10. Good Job Nerd!

  • Edward

    February 3, 2011 at 9:54 pm

    Now that was fun.
    Hm… Crash a speeder into the cantine….
YES! MUST FIND AN EXCUSE TO DO THAT!!!
My first Star Wars game was Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2. I still have it, and I edit it to death. Why I’m still on that one some 13 years later is because 1: Haven’t been able to afford anything else, 2: tried editing Jedi Outcast and was getting somewhere, but then an update changed everything and I got lost, and 3: scripting the events was unbelievably easy.
The community still goes strong, if you are interested: http://www.jkhub.net
I am having a thought of making an AVGN mod, just need to find the right textures though.

Oh, and nice Bullshit ending. Speaking of…….. ;)

James is sad to see you had to use an old video to get you back on track! you filmed this about a year and a half ago! but still is awesome!
I hope that the comment you had on the video where you had to see your first upload of Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hide (that you now realize that the people like you because of that work and is possible for you to sign autographs in any place you go is just because of that!) if you can go back to be the way you were then you will get further because you get more experience with each episode (I know you have tons of experience but lets say you are not at Lv99 yet) I support you as always! as I always said in all my previous comments but I think you needed an epiphany to make you realize your trajectory as the Nerd!

Felt a bit flat this time around. More depth would have been good- personally I don’t like it when games are only mentioned in passing, like you did with the SNES games here. The jokes fell a bit flat too.

I rewatched the Spiderman episode yesterday. I often thought this as the point the Nerd lost his away for a while, but hell, I was pissing myself. The seemingly off-the-cuff remarks between the Nerd and Spiderman were awesome. Little web little web little web.

Rogue Squadron was the first game i played on the N64, in fact i got them both for Christmas. if theres’ anything missing from this episode, it’s the Escape from Fest level. anyone who played this knows what i’m talking about. i could beat every other level, including the later ones(used a code to skip Fest), but i NEVER beat the Fest mission. i think i came close once, but i can’t be sure. “abort the mission the ATPTs have been destroyed! Repeat, the ATPTs HAVE BEEN DESTROYED!1!” Jeez!

There are so many great things about this episode…
First of all, MF Mike– FANTASTIC title card, there must be nearly thirty recognizable characters from the movies and they all look great!
Next, I loved the beer droid (it looks like an old school vacuum cleaner without the hose– whatever it is I’m a fan).
Third, you should use the “beat a game button”, (I’m curious what that remote goes to), for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide on the NES :)
Finally, I LOVE that you know how to leave your fans wanting more by building up suspense for the next episode. I’m sure most of us are hoping for ET, but no matter what I look forward to episode #100.

    February 4, 2011 at 4:34 pm

the beat a game button, what was that made from. and what was a beer robot made from?

  • Lord Moe

    February 4, 2011 at 4:51 pm

another great review! I think my favorite part was the Beat a Game Button. It came out of no where, but was really funny. It’s also great commentary on people who have to rely on Save States (basically cheating) to beat games.

  • February 4, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Wow Nick, you’re a tool….. A giant one. Still I did not like this episode. All the games except the Namco one, were decent games or Atari games, so what did you expect? That being said there are a lot of legit complaints about Super Return of the Jedi, that you didn’t even bother to mention. Oh well…

  • February 4, 2011 at 5:34 pm

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! LOL!!! Nice i’m excitied about the N64 Review, never heard of that 1! star wars on the nes is no DOUT BOWL OF FUCKIN SOUP MIXED WITH DIARREIA,lol spelling!!! Was waiting on a star wars episode and now here it comes!!!

can you do a review on Earthbound

  • February 4, 2011 at 6:45 pm

wow, do people not read the comments ? obviously ET is next. Look on his bookshelf of games at the end of the video after the buffalo shits through his window. Is there any other reason to believe ET isn’t next or does it just so happen he has that little ET figure on there.

  • FuckingFucker

    February 4, 2011 at 7:01 pm

but earthbound is harder than et all thought piece of shit have is bad audio and fuck up game play and bad levels

I loved it. Well done. I actually beat the NES Star Wars game! Brings back memories. Also, holy fucking shit is that title card amazing! Kudos, Mike Mattei for such a terrific job. I don’t even want to know how long that took you to do…

  • PetefromMassachusetts

    February 4, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Also, just a quick thing. I’d love to hear a good ol’ fashioned “JESUS CHRIST!!!” again in the reviews like the old days. I haven’t heard James use the Lord’s name in vein in a long, long time. Hearing him say it in the “Fester’s Quest” review always brings a smile to my face. It just seems so genuine.

    Awesome review!!!

Request: My friend told me of a game that he has hated from a young age… as much as you hate Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde… it’s called Fantastic Dizzy, on the Master System (we live in Britain). He says it wated so much of his life and was so awfully awkward!
A review of that game would be epic.

    Thanks James :)

James if you don’t review ET for the Atari 2600 for your 100th episode next month, I’ll stop watching your videos and watch Nostagia Critic’s reviews instead.

lol jk, you will always be my favorite reviewer no matter what happens.

  • Melltron

    February 5, 2011 at 8:19 am

    Hi.
I love this show more then anything on the internet or on television for that matter. I thought I’d just let you know that I think it would be awesome if you adressed the game Star Wars: the Force Unleashed. It’s one of my favorite games ever and I think they did such a wonderful job with it.
    Have a good one!

    February 5, 2011 at 3:35 pm

In intro in the famicom game where Leia is being projected, the Japanese text translates to “Luke, please help. My friends have been captured by The Empire. Please (help).” Wasn’t the message supposed to be for Obi Wan? :P

  • tsburesh

    February 5, 2011 at 3:48 pm

how on earth will the review of ET take more than 5 or ten minutes. I know ET is epicaly bad, but part of what makes it so bad is there is so little to the game.

  • game4invaders

    February 5, 2011 at 5:04 pm

I know this is over played, but for your 100th anniversary special you should review ET. Make it special. Not every web show makes it to 100 episodes. Not even tv. I mean you did Suerman 64, thats one of the worst. Just suggestion.

  • February 5, 2011 at 7:10 pm

That beer droid looks exactly like the carpet cleaner my parents had when I was a kid.

  • February 5, 2011 at 7:29 pm

Thank you so much for this episode, James. It’s definitely one of my favorites (if not the favorite). :)

The jokes didn’t make me giggle, they really made me laugh.
I love that you would interrupt your review to make humorous sequences like the game beat button and the beer droid. All of them were spontaneous, not in the way of the actual video, and also inspiring for people wanting to make funny and interesting videos.

The “land-speeder crashing into the Mos Eisley bar” scene made me laugh more than in the last year’s AVGNs, as well as the “Darth Vader turning into a scorpion” one, the “cows go mooooo” one and the “silly game names and window breaking” one.

  • stebbinsd

    February 5, 2011 at 9:24 pm

“You might as well have told me ‘Cows go moo!’”

Man, I haven’t belly-laughed like that in a long time! Just imagining a Star Wars game interrupting the gameplay to tell you that in a pop-up is just hilarious!

  • stebbinsd

    February 5, 2011 at 9:31 pm

Of course, it makes sense! His next review will be E.T.! It’s his ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE! Of course, it all makes so much sense!

    February 5, 2011 at 11:16 pm

You know what i’m sick of?: The fact that so many of your fans use such atrocious grammar and horrible spelling. For a bunch of supposed “nerds”, how come they’re so ignorant?

  • adenton7

    February 5, 2011 at 11:21 pm

This episode is probably top 5 for me I love all your episodes. I love all the references that you make to star wars and the special editions. Cannot wait to see what you have in store for us on your 100th episode.

  • February 5, 2011 at 11:30 pm

So many reviews, and the quality level always go up. Always enjoyable. I am a fan of AVGN and Star Wars, so I enjoyed this one a lot. By the way, shadow of the empire was taken from comics, since there are many about Star wars. It is about the fight of the rebellion against the black sun organisation, and the training of Luke to become a Jedi knight. He makes his new lightsaber then. Dash Rendar is one of the main characters.

Probably one of the greatest review you did. Long life to the Nerd!

  • February 6, 2011 at 12:58 am

ok James i have one thing to say, love the work yo do but i fell that there should be at least 4 videos a week, i know its hard to do but i go on the site and see the same video that i`ve already seen for at least a week, if you could it would be nice if you released more

  • February 6, 2011 at 1:25 am

    @darkmanx,

Joking doesn’t equal trolling, just saying. I agree with the sentiment in Logan’s post. We would love to see more vids; however, we know you’re working on a LOT of things and trying to advance in your field. So we understand why you only do 1 a month, and we’re grateful for it! Keep making these James, they are great, I have been watching since number 1!

Was kinda hoping you were going to do Doki Doki Panic on the Famicon Disk System next, as it was implied by the ending of the previous episode. Oh well, these were still good anyway. I was glad you mentioned Shadows of the Empire, but what, no 32x Star Wars?

Is the beer droid stop-motion, or is it some kind of actual robot you guys made? If it’s worth going into, maybe we can see a piece on it in the next DVD.

  • Shanky

    February 6, 2011 at 2:42 pm

    February 6, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Hi James! This was fantastic! Cant believe that u r still doing these! Back in 2005 i saw the episode of the turtles. And after that me and couple of my friends here in Finland, start the friday evenings playing/talking about the 8-bit cames and watching ur videos. And also drinking beer also as well. It so cool that ur coming up a 100 episode soon!! We will be waiting that one here in Finland.
PS. Can u make a episode of any hockey games?

You fucked up a lot of punctuation there guy. Atrocious.

  • February 6, 2011 at 5:10 pm

really enjoyed this video…I played those games when I was younger…mostly the snes ones. I have to admit I never made it past level 2 on any of them….they are difficult…as a lot of old games were…

reminds me of donkey kong on snes when grampa kong or what ever his name is was knocking donkey and diddy saying stuff like back in my day we didn’t have all this easy shit…lol…hillarious!

  • February 6, 2011 at 8:05 pm

    James,

I’ve been a fan of yours for a long time. I’ve been battling depression lately in my life, and your videos still manage to bring smiles and nostalgia to my heart. I always feel like a kid again watching your stuff, it sort of brings back that warm feeling from childhood. You truly are an amazing inspiration to so many people. Your work is something I can always watch to make me feel better.

I hope to see a lot more great material from you in the future =]. Thank you James.

I have been watching your videos since 2007, but only today just signed up on your site to comment for the first time. The end scared the crap out of me and made me jump with my headphones up pretty loud. My fiance asked me why I jumped and started laughing, so I showed her and she did the same when I showed her LOL. At first I was like, “What the hell is that in the background…oh it’s gone, oh well…hey wait it’s coming back…BAM!” LOL.

Great nostalgic video reviews, hope to see you keep making them years to come as I (and I’m sure many others) look forward to them every month. :)

    February 9, 2011 at 12:49 am

Great job james the beer droid was an awesome idea! I am so stoked for episode 100 i think it may be E.T. on the colleco vision expansion module, but who knows whatever you choose it to be it will be unreall for episode 100! Keep up the good work man.

  • February 9, 2011 at 7:16 am

GREAT episode, on par with the best stuff you’ve made. You could easily have made this your 100th episode, and at least I would more than accept that. Can’t wait for what you’re cooking up next time.

Also, I must say that artwork is AMAZING! I noticed three odds; Ol’ Ben looks a little messed up, Leia has a case of Horse-Mouth and Lando looks a bit like a child molestor, but even so that is some astounding work! Mike really outdid himself on this!

I don’t think he’s going to ever review E.T. he’s just teasing us about it,
Even in his Halloween video when he was looking at his shelf of Atari games he touches E.T. making us think, “He’s finally going to review it,” then he just puts it back

  • killteck

    February 11, 2011 at 12:29 am

That jacket is hilarious! Fuck ET. Why does anyone want to see a review of that? Just let the guy do what he does best, and sit back and laugh. Bravo, James! You should have a screening of your 100th. Rent a theater and pack the house, and pack the bong!

The Super Star Wars games for the Game Boy were a lot easier than the SNES versions. At least Super Return of the Jedi was. I played that one until the boss of the Shield Bunker level. Which was where I got kind of lost because i couldn’t figure out what the hell i had to do to beat that thing.

At some point i looked up the passwords on the internet so i could at least see what happens after that level, but i couldn’t beat any of the levels other than the inside of the Death Star. I’m not even sure anymore if i actually beat darth vader. I remember fighting him though. But altogether it was easier, and you didn’t have too many blind jumps to make.

  • February 12, 2011 at 7:09 am

im so exciting what will james show us in the 100 episode!! .i loved every episode since then until now. thank you so much james for everything.its been an amazing journey through out all these years watching and laughing with cinemassacre and we all wishes for you an everlasting success :)

    i know, i know.
you are a console-guy and never did an amiga-review so far.
but there are some decent, mid-sucking star wars game on the amiga.
if one day there will be a second star-wars-retro-episode, it would be great if you could include this:
    http://hol.abime.net/1227

and by the way: there are SO MANY awful games on this system…enough for a whole life of nerd-films…

James @ 16:45 to 17:00 ish on the timeline, the sound fx in that Star Wars game sounds like constant farting, lol. was that you adding that in or is that the game as recorded? if so i was really expecting you to comment on it as its pretty ridicules. ^_^

Gah! I remember renting Star Wars for the NES back in the day, man was I pissed off. At that point in life it seemed impossible that anyone would handle Star Wars so sloppily.

And frigging hard! Really, James, kudos to you for putting up with that one in particular.

Man, I grew up with those Super Nintendo games, and they were awesome. Frustrating, yeah, but it was the kind of frustration that felt worth it to get through and left you satisfied when you did, so it was all good. However, I’ve never played Shadows of the Empire. I should try it some time.

Dark Forces was amazing, though. Classic FPS and a classic Star Wars game for the PC.

    review: The Crow:City of Angels

you will hate this game more than that weird static sound you hear deep within the microcasums of your mind when your next door neighbour switches on that old tv of theirs that hasnt been switched on in long time…… you know what sound im talking about…. its that human equivilant of a dog whistle sound mixed with the scratching of a class chalk board… just sharper and alot more high pitched… and supposedly kills brain cells :)

Love it! Star Wars is such a classic series, but I’m sure fewer people have played the games than seen the movies, so it’s nice to see footage and hear an opinion on these old games. It’s crazy how many really popular movies got terrible game adaptations, and even though some of these games looked tolerable, it was still funny seeing your reactions to them. My favourite part was the Darth Vader-scorpion scene. You have some of the best facial expressions of any reviewer or even actor, so it can be pretty mesmerizing when you give us a really good one. I also liked the landspeeder/bar part since you mentioned one of the most famous (and in my mind hilarious) controversies Star Wars had. The ending was a bit weird, but I didn’t mind. It was an interesting non-sequitur and didn’t hurt the video. Your interactions with the beer droid were cute and much appreciated humor outside the games.

  • March 31, 2011 at 3:30 am

sublime on all levels. you satisfy hardcore and new fans of any franchise or product thoroughly and give incredibly detailed and well thought out information that time after time educates 100% effectively. great great work

hey jame i’m from the philippines and i used to play starwars on the famicom when i was a kid and i know there is like a cheat you can do. If you can see a connector of some sort on the front of the famicom, you can use a coin the size of a quarter and jiggle the coin inside that connector and it will give you either extra life or you can do stage select. you should try it on your famicom and see what it does :)

@ Kaboose25 James focuses on the WORST games ever made, so it’s basically a compliment that he didn’t mention it… There’s been a couple episodes where he’s focused on better games, such as his Castlevania episode, but that’s about the limit to it.

OMG! I’ve been waiting for a Star Wars episode for like 2 years!
The NES version of Star Wars the New Hope was one of my favorite games when I was a child. It’s true that it’s a really hard game for a first time player, luckily I had 2 older brothers to teach me :D D

BTW, you can also get the shields from a green cave full of maggots, you just have to go to that cave like 8 times :D

But thank you for this, it was very entertaining!

I’m a Star Wars fanatic. The movies were great, but the NES games sucked monkey balls! (no pun intended)

Now the 3 that was on the SNES, they were hard as fuck, but great games! After the SNES, the Star Wars games got better and I know there’s a few Star Wars games that sucked!

However, everyone tends to fuck up every once in a while! Thank God Star Wars was created by LucasArts and NOT Laughing Joking Numb-Nuts!!! If LJN got their hands on the franchise, we’d be screwed forever!

Star Wars wasn’t the first Star Wars Video Game. The Arcade game came out in 1983 and the 2600 version soon followed. The Empire Strike Back game on the other hand came out in 1982 on the 2600.

    • the_pieman

      February 23, 2012 at 12:54 am

@OrionHamilton I think he meant on THAT system…

      • OrionHamilton

        February 23, 2012 at 3:04 am

@the_pieman The first Star Wars game ever on the Atari 2600 was “Empire Strikes Back” in1982. (Not only that, but the first Star Wars game ever and the first licensed movie video game for a home console system) The Star Wars Arcade game came out in 1983. AVGN states that the first Star Wars game on the Atari. He’s referring to the one based on the Arcade game. Which was obviously released after the Arcade game. I love the guy, but he’s flat out wrong. How do I know this? Well you could look it up online, but more importantly. I was there. I’m 39 years old. I had Atari. I lived through all this.

@the_pieman No there’s no fighting. I didn’t put exclamation points, hehe. It’s all good.

      • March 6, 2012 at 1:22 pm

@the_pieman I think he meant the first atari version, as he said, “the first atari version, based on the first movie”

        March 17, 2012 at 5:11 pm

@Moomoothecow ALSO he already mentioned the arcade version in the video, listen orion, listen

    • March 6, 2012 at 1:21 pm

@OrionHamilton I think he meant the first atari version, and he also said its known to not live up to the arcade standards.

@Moomoothecow Empire Strikes Back is the first Atari 2600 Star Wars game and first Star Wars game ever. After watching it again though. He means the first Star Wars game on Atari 2600 based on the first movie. He’s right.

Star Wars is one of those game concepts that always gets better as time progresses. It might seem a little bit more biased because I’m such a Star Wars Geek-A-Droid, but I think this is one of his best reviews ever! MTFBWY!

A big disco ball? Great idea. I think they actually did that in a Powerpuff Girls episode when they fought an enemy called The Boogieman.

You should try the “beat a game button” on Ninja Gaiden 1.

“Jar Jar Binks Bingo, Chewie Wookie Cookie Cookin’, Storm Trooper Tennis, Jabba’s Farts Unleashed, Wedge’s Wedgie Attack, Fishing For Ackbars, Super Sith Shit Toss Tournament Edition, Bobba Fett’s Name Game, Governor Tarkin vs. Count Dookie” are my personal favorite titles lol. I’d play those.

I liked SOTE, although the third person action wasn’t great it’s pilot stages were and as a result were the precursor to Rogue Squadron.

I wouldn’t say using saves are cheating if they don’t get you pass anything. Still you and still you dying.

They’re only really training wheels is all. I’ve only gotten a lot better at many games both off and on the actual console itself, and I don’t seem to get as angry too when I fail. Thats’ because it really is my fault rather than the game not allowing me to learn via focusing on my mistakes, sending me where ever.

Personally, I practically use them now just to start where I left off directly or to simulate infinite continues or lives as in “I Wanna Be the Guy”, as wasting more time isn’t really challenge to me. If you were going to die a lot anyhow, you don’t need additional stress from complete do-overs…that’s up to the failing or the hard part itself.

That stuff should be left to extreme modes, which is why we need higher difficulties in games todays.

Besides, lives were created for use in arcades in the first place, as a form of penalty or balance, so that people don’t stand in front of the same arcade machine less they pop it full of money.
