A chat with Pat the NES Punk

James / February 1st, 2011

I met up with Pat the NES Punk one day to hang out casually and play some games. He brought his camera and put together a little video where we candidly discuss what it’s like making game reviews. Thanks Pat, for sending the video over. It’s unscripted and totally loose. I wasn’t able to articulate myself too well, since the topic of making game reviews is very complicated, but I’m sure many of you will enjoy nevertheless.

Also, check out Pat’s review of Nintendo World Championship. It’s often cited as the rarest NES game with only 116 copies in existence. (90 grey carts and 26 gold)

Awesome video. I’m glad to see these two get together and break down something that they do all the time, but we rarely see. ^_^

Did I just spot James calling the endings of his own movies normal? Let’s not forget about Super Mecha Death Christ 2000 B.C., shall we?

  • marco_himself

    February 1, 2011 at 10:07 am

why does the NES punk seem so nervous? Why is he called the NES punk anyway? just because he looks like that green day guy? this vid throws up more questions to me than it answers.

    February 1, 2011 at 10:15 am

Great videos guys. And James, does that little cameo mean we know what to expect for your next review? I sure hope so! Maybe a competition with Mike?

  • encey

    February 1, 2011 at 10:21 am

Enjoyed the conversation, thanks for posting! The behind-the-scenes / making-of stuff is always so interesting to hear about, and gives us a chance to better appreciate the hard work that goes into every video, whatever its length or complexity.

  • xdeathknightx

    February 1, 2011 at 10:23 am

Which capture device(s) do you use James?

And do agree that seeing you came up with the Nerd that you know best how he would react. A lot of people just state how they feel like he should react. But they don’t have that bond that you have.

Did find it to be interesting to see how a review comes to be. Do you write all the lines in the script or do other people brainstorm with you?

  • ChetSteadman

    February 1, 2011 at 10:38 am

Pat needs to spend more time making reviews and less time hanging out with reviewers. he;s like some kind of groupie or something. I like his videos but they are few and far between.

  • February 1, 2011 at 11:04 am

Chet, just because I have a tattoo of the NERD on my shoulder does not make me a groupie.

    And you’re right, I only produced about 25-30 videos in 2010… I’m sorry it wasn’t more. πŸ™

  • February 1, 2011 at 11:46 am

Pat got to go to the “nerd” cave? That’s fucking awesome! I wish I could go there, even for just a min or two to look around. Would be cool.

Great video guys. James and Pat both Rule!

  • Rasengan999

    February 1, 2011 at 11:47 am

Hey Chet, when I see you make even 5 videos a year, then we’ll let you smack talk. These videos take more work than you’ll ever know. There could be a whole video on them just making a video, but you still won’t be able to understand. You have to be there and do it to know. That goes for the rest of you who are whining about the whole 1 Nerd a month thing. These videos take work and time, and then to put all that work into it, and then go read all your whining comments, I bet it doesn’t make James the happiest camper at Crystal Lake! So, if you want to whine around, how about this: You go make your own series. Make one video each week, and make it as quality and awesome as Pat and James’s. Then, I will allow you to whine, without getting raped by their REAL fans yelling at you.

  • February 1, 2011 at 11:48 am

Great thoughts. Thanks for sharing that!

  • February 1, 2011 at 12:12 pm

Enjoyed this. The videos where it feels like us, the audience, are sort of hanging out with you bullshitting are always fun. Even in smaller, unscripted videos, like the trivia videos for instance, it gives a comfortable kick back and chill with us feel. I think a lot of people getting out of work or winding down from their day enjoy these a lot, which is my favorite time to check the site. Even in the nerd videos, although you’re typically by yourself James, a lot of videos create a cool atmosphere that reminds the viewer of some long night they had just kicking it at home trying to beat some bullshit game. The videos where you strike a good balance between anger and just hanging out playing a game are my personal favorites and I think they tend to come off less scripty or overacted. I can relate them to my childhood, as well as the present, because a lot of times it reminds me of the shit I say with my friends playing something online. We’re laughing and hanging out, yet we’re cursing at the fuckery taking place on the screen. Anyways, that’s my two cents. hope it was constructive man, looking forward to Cinemassacre’s 2011 videos.

I really like the flow of content that has been on the site lately. It’s a nice change of pace from the AVGN. Keep it coming James! Nice work!

  • February 1, 2011 at 12:20 pm

wow, just watched pat’s review of the Nintendo World Championships. And I must say, It has the greatest ending ive ever seen!

  • February 1, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Nice man! I watch this kid’s videos and he’ pretty funny, and I’m totally jealous that he got to see the nerd lair. Can’t wait for the new episode.

    February 1, 2011 at 1:35 pm

I always enjoy hearing about what goes into making a video. I guess making a video is alot like courting. Many hours of hard work, time and money for just a few moments of awesome. Actually that joke makes me sound old.

  • February 1, 2011 at 1:48 pm

I have to admit I hate the comments from people that say “he wasn’t angry enough, he’s losing his fire” it’s like come on people, you want the exact same video every time? Give me a break.
James you are still going strong, and I still love your videos as much today as I did when I first saw your TMNT video 6 years ago.

  • str8spaceball1

    February 1, 2011 at 1:55 pm

Yea James, I can completely see where you are coming from about the comments people make. If I was in your position, and with how much I would want to please people…. It has to be tough with so many just giving vague thoughts on how it wasn’t good enough or as you said “angry enough”. I would go insane in your shoes!

You’re well appreciated and whether you end up making it “big” or not within the Hollywood world, you’ll have plenty of fans including myself who love being entertained by you.

  • WillWill

    February 1, 2011 at 2:02 pm

This was nice to see. Thanks for putting it up!

… that being said, it looked *awkward* — like you’d been blindsided, or ambushed by the NES punk, or something. Just, sorta’ uncomfortable. Maybe just me projecting on you, though.

    Tks again!

Cool video, but James should be angrier.

  • Undertaker

    February 1, 2011 at 3:24 pm

ok i will admit im one of the ones that says that your not angry enough in some of your vids. i wont apologize because that was my opinion. i will say that i have a certain expectation for your vids and that maybe i put them at too high of a level sometimes.

  • Mountrussmore

    February 1, 2011 at 3:30 pm

James, you are truly an inspiration. Because of you, I’ve decided to do a thing where I bash overrated games. I’m going to find a bunch of good games that people overrate to death and nitpick the stupidest things. I’ve already got a few good examples I can use (Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger come to mind). Don’t worry, though, I will come up with original material and jokes (unlike some people who copy your phrases). You have made a huge impact on my gaming world.

And don’t listen to those people who criticize you not being angry enough or too angry. You can’t do the same thing every time because that’s not exciting. You make each video exciting by shaking it up. Never lose that because that’s the key to success. =)

  • Etkar.H

    February 1, 2011 at 4:00 pm

This is going to be exactly like the Captain N christmas special episode. Episode 99 is going to be the continueing of Pat’s newest review…

  • Gomitachan

    February 1, 2011 at 4:40 pm

Wow… and I always wanted to do some videos myself.. I never thought it could be that hard… anyways, is really nice to see how the REAL James is.

    Big Fan from Tijuana!!

  • Decci

    February 1, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Theres like 10,000 people very eager to get into that room. You should host like a competition or something. And the winner gets a tour.

  • February 1, 2011 at 5:29 pm

Yeah, reviewing games is a bitch, though I still love doing it (strangely).

I also review games, though I’m text-based and my process is slightly different. I already review pretty much every game I own, so I don’t really have much trouble picking a game to review.

But I’m like James in the fashion that I start the writing after I’ve done the game. I play my games with a reviewer’s mind, being alert for any fuck-ups with these games. Framerate drops, awkward controls, inconsistent difficulty, lack of polish, etc. You really have to keep an eye out for those things, then writing the review in a procedural fashion means you end up doing a lot of work. Then you gotta link everything to it and all that bullshit and then what do you do?

    Repeat on another fucking game.

  • Valis77

    February 1, 2011 at 5:31 pm

that guy looks like he was gonna steal his games.

  • February 1, 2011 at 5:46 pm

@Jordanv78 I know exactly what you mean! Those types of people always tick me off because they think that they can do so much better than James, but they don’t even realize how much time and effort that it takes into making these videos.

It was nice to finally hear some more information into the making of the videos since it’s a question that gets asked alot when James goes to conventions to get a chance to meet the fans and sign autographs and all that great stuff.

I really enjoyed the Spider-Man video because it was just James and Kyle dressed up as Spider-Man reviewing a bunch of shitty Spider-Man games and having fun while making the video! Plenty of very funny moments in that video as well.

Don’t bother paying attention to the people saying crap like “You weren’t angry enough” or “You need to be angrier” and just focus on the people giving constructive criticisms about you’re videos.

  • Rocko

    February 1, 2011 at 5:56 pm

You think he’s not angry enough? well too bad you are not watching AVGN, you are watching James Rolfe chatting with Pat the NES punk….
AVGN videos are once a month, first sunday if I remember…

Learn to make the difference and you won’t be disappointed…

Btw I love james rolfe more than the AVGN…. am I normal?

  • chris78457

    February 1, 2011 at 5:57 pm

I know just how hard it can be to make any kind of video. I’m always left entertained after watching your videos. As for the people, that say “You need to be angrier”, well you just can’t make everyone happy.

  • February 1, 2011 at 6:13 pm

It’s understandable but usually I enjoy any level of anger whatever you do. Considering that you made 99 episodes, counting this or next Wednesday, I’ve been able to enjoy many levels of your anger and I’ve never been bored.

  • TomM

    February 1, 2011 at 6:22 pm

Nice video, James. The first video I’ve ever seen was the first Bible games on accident when I was surfing Youtube. I’m so glad I saw it. All of your videos are fresh and awesome ever since I saw the Bible games one. I personally like the different videos with concerns of being angry or not. Never stop making videos; I’d think I’d go insane.

P.S. I bet you’re going to hate the storm that’s coming up to the NE this week.

Pat & James in the same video ? Its like a dream come true !

  • Yamazon3

    February 1, 2011 at 6:35 pm

James to this day, the Spider-man episode is still my favorite. I’d love to see you do another TMNT review with some of the other turtle games that you haven’t touched on yet, but mostly only if you could actually have the turtles show up. That would be AWESOME!

  • February 1, 2011 at 6:52 pm

James is the master of video game reviews. πŸ˜€

  • February 1, 2011 at 7:50 pm

Your doing a great job James. No matter what alot of us watch no matter if we would have written it the same way or not.

    February 1, 2011 at 8:08 pm

Thanks for this vid guys, very interesting, I’ve been wanting to watch such a Q&A for a while because even the one you had at Magfest seemed a bit unfocused. This one was a bit more technical so… excellent!

I love this way of discussing stuff. Casual, you guys looking all over the place and moving about while you’re talking and such, this is just how I discuss geeky stuff with my friends lol

    February 1, 2011 at 10:17 pm

Love your videos, especially AVGN and Board james!

Just purchased AVGN vol 4 cant wait to see the extras :).

Also to comment on the “not angry enough” Bit. To me it makes little sense to fly off the handle early on in the video. I think it works best when you build it up. First with the games back story, than the mechanics etc. Makes it a lot more enjoyable to see you go nutz on top of the mountain; after we have watch you trying to climb it.

  • February 1, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Aaah….this brings back memories…not – necessarily good memories….*shudders and remembers last summer.* I still feel real bad about my comments on the Comic-Con, it haunts me! So I think I shall apologize again, even though it’s been like 6 months and I already apologized mucho.

Really fun seeing this video, very informative. I can relate to the vid.

  • February 1, 2011 at 10:29 pm

I really enjoyed the insight into the review process. As a filmmaker, it’s nice to see people bitching about time codes and scripting ideas on the fly. However, I have to say, this video did kind of ruin the twist ending to Pat’s NWC review. Still… Jolly good.

    February 1, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Hmm. I’ll have to check out this NES-Punk fellow and see if he’s as entertaining as the nerd…

OK, that’s hoping for too much. But I hope he’s entertaining!

  • February 1, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Loved it! It’s awesome to get some insight on how you create these videos.

As far as the anger thing goes: you will never get people to agree on it. Personally, I think the balance of craziness and history/review in your videos is perfect. I don’t think I’ve been dissappointed with the anger level in an episode yet.

You are the Nerd, James, and no one knows the character better than you. Keep trusting your instincts.

  • February 1, 2011 at 11:29 pm

I have over 400 personal videos uploaded now, and you inspired me to make my last 200 videos in the last 2 years, thanks so much James for all your true inspiration on video making, comedy, directing, editing, music, etc etc etc. THANK YOU! if you are interested check me out at youtube.com/ac1dchr15t ! Peace James!

    February 1, 2011 at 11:34 pm

First things first..Thanks for leaving your youtube page JUSTIN MARTIN..I’m gonna check out your stuff as well cause I love all this shit!!..Secondly, Even though you seem a little layed back in the interview, based on all the stuff you’ve done you can clearly see the passion you have for making all these films..I just hope that you continue on your quest and receive the recognition you deserve..Over all, your stuff is Ace’s Man!!

  • February 1, 2011 at 11:34 pm

I’ve seen all your episodes and quite sincerely just enjoy whatever you have to offer. I enjoy change-up just as much as i enjoy continuity and I appreciate you going after the vision you have and sharing it with others. Although I have to admit if there’s a game or two that it would just be too funny not to do, and that comes from tons of requests ( like superman 64 ) I’m all for it. I just strongly agree with the statement that art ceases to be art when you are creating it for other people and not yourself. Great interview! Love your work!

  • February 2, 2011 at 12:06 am

I’d have to agree with Jordanv78.

Although, the videos I enjoy the most are probably the ones with a nice balance of information and high jinks. I wouldn’t even mind if you went a little over-board with the info; at least you’d make it more interesting than some of the other videos on the web about games.

    February 2, 2011 at 12:22 am

I remember in NES Accessorie when you said im an ”Assholic” could also say ”Fuckholic” thats why im named FUUUCCKK after all =P lol But yea you were swearing so much more 2 years ago , but hey i still like your style its always different for each video and theres always a good story, like you know wtf you talking about !! And we can always feel how it can be frustrating to play these shitty games!!.

Keep up the good work James , dont take your retreat until you are reviewing shitty Wii games in 25 years =P

  • Gee

    February 2, 2011 at 12:30 am

Great video, personally I’m just fine with however James goes about portraying “The Nerd” (informative or just plain pissed I’m all for it). After all, he was the one who created him. After seeing this I can only imagine how much stress goes on when you have multiple things going on at the same time when hitting the due date. I’m not too much or at all a stickler on when or how things should be done, but sure get glad when James finds the time to get a “Nerd” video out. πŸ˜€

  • February 2, 2011 at 1:13 am

I really like this video, James. It’s nice to see you just chatting, being a guy who makes films. I really like your other ‘reality’ clips, like Cinemassacre 200, and the Dragon in my Dreams, and Rocky Jumped a Park Bench. All good things.
    Thanks to Pat!

  • Cory Power

    February 2, 2011 at 1:16 am

Now I’m left wondering whether the bit at the end of Pat’s video is the lead up to an AVGN video or a Pat video. Could that be #100? Or just a cameo in another Pat video?

  • mazdawg

    February 2, 2011 at 1:17 am

Pat the NES punk is my hero. I love his videos. That is all.

Well he is not really my hero…

  • adam loewen

    February 2, 2011 at 3:34 am

I love Pat. Together – a little awkward, but in a good way. The discussions of creative vision and fan expectation were fascinating. I’d like to see more of that.

  • February 2, 2011 at 6:55 am

I think when people say “you’re not angry enough” they’re probably referring to your changed use of language, in your older videos they’re a little more basic, you’re less good than you are so you’re still just coming up with random ideas, and that gives you some really interesting dialogue as AVGN like “shit the fuck!?” but recently i haven’t seen a good spontaneous swear.

  • February 2, 2011 at 9:34 am

    Well, what to say…
You just asked for our DVD content wishes and then deliver it promptly the next week on the site. Great stuff and please more of it.
I have to agree with other commenters concerning the discussion of the audience reaction. Maybe you can sneak in an “AVGN Mailbag” that discusses some of the comments you really (dis-)liked or were plain confusing together with Mike.

    Keep up the good work!

  • pro_thizz

    February 2, 2011 at 12:30 pm

This is a great subject. To see all the work involved in making such enjoyable videos is a reminder of how much time it takes. it can go unnoticed to some. To be honest, I feel like we as fans owe you, after having seen these video essentially all for free. If i had the money to buy the avgn dvd set I would’ve bought it already just to support you but at the moment I can’t =(, but hopefully will one day. I just want to thank you again for all the laughs and entertainment you provide to us over the net.

    February 2, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Cool video. I liked the video of the Nintendo World Champion game too, pretty funny stuff. How the f**k did you guys get that thing? Huge amount of money…

Just a little fan feedback that isn’t nonsensical (I feel inspired to leave some by some of your comments in the vid). I really enjoy your informative videos, such as your system reviews (Jaguar, Sega-CD, 32x, CD-i). They are my favorite ones. I hope to see you do some other obscure system reviews some time, I think they turn out really well. There are some other relatively obscure systems out there that would provide you with decent material to work with (WonderSwan, Game Gear, PCE).

A video recapping the demise of Sega from your view would be particularly interesting too. That was a pretty momentous event in gaming. Maybe recap on some DreamCast stuff, how it went wrong despite being such a innovative system, great DC games, terrible DC games, etc. Maybe touch on the Sega Neptune. Just some thoughts, keep up the good work, your fans are appreciative.

In reference to the Nintendo World Championship review from Pat, my cousins had a grey cartridge like that way back.

They picked up the cartridge somewhere, left it in a drawer, and from what I remember the front label was destroyed with coffee stains and whatever and coming off, except for half.

The number which was officially saying “1” on the furthest left and the rest of the number was a ripped in half saying “5” and the last number was a penned in “2”.

Sadly, all their toys were destroyed. They sold it for like $50 in a yard sale and they probably bought a super soaker with it.

    February 3, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Wow, that was a hard watch. I respect James as a film maker and actor/entertainer but this kid pat is nothing more than a fan with enough time on his hands to try and rip off the nerd’s style from his website layout to even the words used to describe games. Yet, somehow pat manages to void his films completely of the creativity and substance i find myself enjoying in cinemassacre films.
by the way, i’d like to promote my new website http://www.nerdimassacre.com. i’m known as the disgruntled console dork. check out my reviews in the DCD tab. i use my flip camera and windows video maker.

I 100% agree. James, you’re too nice, man. This kid has barely a smudge of your talent. I commend you for giving him the time of day, but really. His videos are almost unwatchable!

By the way, I appreciate the “Mr. Bucket” episode that much more, knowing the blood, sweat and tears you put into it.

Pat is cool. All you haters are just all butthurt that you didn’t get to hang out with your nerdy hero. I love the nerd but some of his fans are ridiculous. Bashing pat serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever. If you guys can do better than him by all means review games. Nobody will watch though.

hate to say it but pat is full of boom! long live our nerd!

I can’t argue anyone’s preferences in what they like to watch, and i dont intend to. if you like watching shit, keep watching your shit.
But when your shit videos are imitating AVGN videos, i think thats bullshit. And i know there’s a million game reviewers similar to AVGN, but none of them are so flagrantly sucking on the coat-tails’ balls of this website and it’s contents as pat.
it’s like he’s not even trying to make creative or funny videos as much as he’s just trying to recreate someone else’s idea.
The only thing AVGN and nespunk have in common is that they both want to be AVGN.

    @Dirty Jared,
before you respond to me, try to understand what i’m saying. I dont make videos nor do i want to. I just want to watch something original. I’d refer you to what i wrote earlier, for better explanation, but you obviously weren’t paying any fucking attention. asshole.

I don’t agree that Pat’s ripping off AVGN. I’ve only watched a few of his videos, but he’s not sitting around playing terrible games and swearing. It’s mostly informative with a little story mixed in. Similar to James’ more informative videos, sure, but that’s like saying two documentaries are similar because they are both documentaries. AVGN is much more popular than Pat, obviously, but there’s nothing wrong with what he’s doing. Hopefully this will get him a little press because I think he’s worth checking out.

Holy crap, James isn’t Jesus. The guy isn’t the end all be all. He didn’t invent making videos on the internet. He does it well, but everything he does had been done before he came along and at times has arguably been done better. Some of you people need to accept that James isn’t the only person who owns a camera and knows what YouTube is.

Keep up, Cory. The topic is pat, not James.
But, in all fairness, your irrelevant and obvious insights were written with strong conviction.

  • February 14, 2011 at 8:05 am

Pat is a bigger nerd than the AVGN, at least with the nerd you have a character, I wonder if Pat is not acting, no one can be that bigger nerd than THE NERD!

  • February 15, 2011 at 4:11 pm

This is the best video IMO on the entire Internet about the complexities of making videos. It can be too easy to criticize if one doesn’t appreciate how much time and discipline is involved, even for a short “high quality* video.

So when guys like James and Pat make videos, it’s not just this or that, it’s a lot of things.

  • February 17, 2011 at 6:41 am

Dude, I like James’s stuff most of the time…but come on, do a little give and take with Pat….you just lean there and wax about the past in a monotone and never make eye-contact and it’s obvious Pat is crawling out of his skin for lack of a reaction or proper interview technique…ie. don’t fucking turn this into a monologue, ask Pat some questions too…and dont be fucking sarcastic when he shoots you a compliment or makes a comment, like this is your fucking interview and not his…..this was disappointing. Word to James, if you’re going to be a successful director, look people in the fucking eyes and tell them what you think, everything else is weak shit.

  • February 17, 2011 at 7:07 am

Pat’s review of Nintendo World Championship was awesome! Very unexpected.

    @calvin boy (3 comments below this) –
Stop neigh-saying people like Pat who are just sharing their hobby over the internet- His style is not a rip-off off AVGN, it’s just a shared interest. If I chose to ink my illustrations in a similar way to Mike because I think I might enjoy it- or maybe even prefer it- I would! (but I prefer digital).
Anyway, you get on here to bash Pat and promote yourself! (your website wouldn’t load on my browser)- I just think its sad that you’re knocking Pat for being a ‘glorified fan’ of the AVGN and your website url is “nerdimassacre.com”, AND you refer to yourself as “Disgruntled Console Dork”- C’mon Man! Don’t hate on people who just want to do their own thing- because you wouldn’t like it if it was pointed at you…

    Happy reviewing,

Nice chat guys. Thanks for the insight, I was hoping to start reviewing games myself although Im not sure if I should do new or old games. If i do old games the plus side is I have a working NES with around 80 games in my collection plus alot of accessories.

This was a great video. I watch both of your shows (well, multiple shows from James, and Pat’s show on Retroware TV,) and after seeing the videos of you two at Comicon this is a real treat. You two are some of my favourite retro reviewers, and you’ve both got such great personalities it was wonderf…wtf, there’s no ending “h” in CheetaMen!? Fuck, I’ve got, like, 20+ remixes and covers of that song in iTunes, now I gotta go change the spelling in the titles…

Anyway, the two of you seem to work really well together with your personalities and being able to see both of you candid was wonderful. Two great tastes that taste great together.

    @Darkquest Deathunter:

I hear what you’re saying, and while it is something James should definitely work on, do consider that he might not be good with social interactions. He is a nerd, after all. He seem very insecure to me. As for compliments, some people don’t know how to handle them, me included. It just feels awkward, and instead of showing appreciation you get more or less defensive, at first. If you don’t receive compliments a lot, it’s obviously unusual, and personally, I feel uncertain about their sincerity. It’s all deeply psychological. Social anxiety is a bitch.

Pat seems a lot more self-confident than James does. Even though he’s probably a huge fan who’s really happy to be there, he does not seem nervous to me. James seem a lot more uncertain of the situation.

  • April 5, 2011 at 12:13 pm

@Calvin. I believe Corey’s spiel was more to do with your attitude towards James, than your opinion of Pat. And yes, BOTH were on the topic. His point was pretty valid. Pat is just also a reviewer who focuses on Nintendo games. It’s easy to draw comparisons if you’re looking for them. Anyways, what Corey said. While James’ reviews are more different, and often jam packed with entertainment, Pats’ seem to play more like little interesting insights in to certain games he enjoys/whatnot. He’s a HELL of a lot better than some of the crap on Youtube these days. (IE: NC17 Productions, and those ‘reviews’ that are 90% off topic rants…)

And I’m agreeing with Darkquest as well. It wasn’t much of a ‘chat’. Pat seemed to get lumped with the role of interviewer…

Wow, it’s kinda weird that I actually didn’t see this video on the site until now. But yeah, I could feel a bit of myself as a fan was being addressed in this video. It’s a little weird to watch AVGN reviews that aren’t angry, or are over the top when there’s little need to be angry.

Personally, I know after playing so many infuriating games, it really mellows you out. I don’t think there’s a need to do a video game review every month. I mean sure there’s a demand if that’s what you want to keep up with, but if the game doesn’t personally affect you, there’s no real need for a review. I prefer a quality review that was heartfelt and short rather than a review that was drawn out and boring just to get it out of the way.

Personally, some of my favorite reviews are ones that are barely angry at all: like the Castlevania reviews and Transformers. It’s that calm, mellow attitude that can let an aggravating situation explain itself by just showing the game play. My favorite expression was from the Dracula review where the music was a jumbled array of 8-bit madness, and the face just looked shocked and disappointed.

But some of them have to be a little more angry when the game is so subtle, like Silver Surfer. It doesn’t look hard or frustrating, but after that review, I was dared to play it. And I did. And that game is hilariously difficult!

So it just comes down to what affects you. If the game gets a lot of requests, and it’s just not interesting, I say pass. For me, I go back in my spare time and play old games, and when it gets frustrating I wish there was an AVGN review to explain how shitty it gets. But what makes it a great movie is the connection.

Fester’s Quest had great acting, great banter and dialogue, and the gameplay was well explained with cursing, and not just rage. Anger is understandable, but rage gets a bit awkward… like screaming into a pillow.

The Karate Kid was one of my favorite reviews, and it was actually pretty short. If I had the choice to see a 3:30:00 movie in theaters that sucked, or a 3:30 movie on youtube that made me laugh, well, that’s why I don’t go to the movies that often.

It can bit over the top with the effects at times, sometimes directors try for more ‘mature’ humor that involves blood and shit, and that’s fine, but at times it can be a bit too childish – which defeats the point of the maturity. So I guess that comes down to the writing, and I know that’s a little vague, but it’s hard to pull off. I guess I just need to see some more examples until I go, “PERFECT LOLROFLMAO”.

I think the Bugs Bunny episodes are a prime example. The first one was good, I didn’t mind the maturity, but the effects when Bugs changed into Woody Woodpeckers in the second episode was a bit lame, so it was hard to take seriously (in a comedy if that makes sense).

Anyway, this comment is a bit long, but hopefully it’s helpful, I’m not sure if you read these, but thanks for the AVGN videos, thanks for putting up with our comments and suggestions, and thanks for the laughs.

I guess we the fans, each have a different idea of what makes a good AVGN episode (like people say at TV Tropes: “Your Milage May Vary”).

At one point in this video James said “I did two videos that each had opposite reactions…” he mentions Deadly Danger Dungeon, but which was the other video he was going to mention?

Great Video guys! I think it would be fun if you did more reviews with Pat or even angry Joe in your videos…the cross over video with the Nintendo championship game was awesome…also could you do some more reviews about the game accessories like the powerglove or power pad ect.
If you would consider that, I’d appreciate it.

Love both characters and big supporter of James and Pat. I just watched this extra on Pat’s latest DVD set. Something I have been wondering though, I noticed Pat seems to have all his material in tact from the web whereas James has to cut some things out to due to copy right issues. For example, I was watching Pat the Nes Punk vol. 1 & 2 dvd and he has the Kenny Loggin’s music still on there in his Baseball Stars review and even the music video pops in here and there. Although the Joan Jet “Bad Reputation” intro theme isn’t there and I’ve seen it play fully online a few times for some episodes.

The AVGN DVDs and even the Board James dvd are edited in some episodes. Hell even the AVGN movie couldn’t show any clips from any NES games but E.T. was there at the end but couldn’t use the E.T. name officially. The whole thing is a giant headache I’m sure. It’s just something that I’ve been wondering about since watching Pat’s DVDs.
