James / January 23rd, 2011
To everyone who has the latest AVGN DVD: How do you like it? Let me know what you think of the bonus features and everything here. I realized there’s usually never usually a place to leave comments for it, so I decided to start one.
January 23, 2011 at 4:55 pm
i love the dvd it was nice to watch it on my big screen tv instead of a computer
January 23, 2011 at 5:05 pm
It’s good, but not as good as Volume 3 (considering that set has several “updated” episodes).
My two questions are (one of which doesn’t have much to do with Volume 4)…
How come you didn’t do a “Jaguar CD” bonus since you have a working Jaguar CD nowadays (unless it broke AGAIN)?
And have you gotten the “cable” for the Famicom Disk System yet?
January 23, 2011 at 5:09 pm
Ninja GAAAAAAAAAAIDEN *Two snaps and a Gayden* LOL
January 23, 2011 at 5:12 pm
It is an awesome dvd, I love all the bonus features! 🙂
I laughed so hard about the Virtual Reality Stuntmaster part!
In the video “Hanging out with the Nerd” you’re trying to load The Simpsons Arcade game for the Commodore 64. But you did not succeed to load it. What you should do is: after you type LOAD “*”,8,1 (and when the game is loaded) type RUN. And then the game starts.
January 23, 2011 at 5:17 pm
I haven’t received it yet and I’ve been waiting for over a month. Mind you, I do live in Australia but it didn’t take the previous three volumes this long to arrive each year.
January 23, 2011 at 5:30 pm
I just got mine last tuesday. I really like the discs with game sprites on them and the extras were intresting. My favorite was the nerd room tour with you and Mike. I really liked the commentaries on Volume 2, it would be nice to see more of those and the Virtual Reality Stuntmaster and Sega 3D glasses videos were intresting to watch too, maybe there will be one on Volume 5 about the Atari accessories 🙂 One thing not related to Vol. 4, i got the never version of Vol.2 and noticed that the cover was different from the earlier version, why is that ?
January 23, 2011 at 5:32 pm
Hey, registered just to leave a comment. Ask and you shall receive, right?
I honestly thought in terms of both content and bonus features Vol. 4 was a return to form and maybe the most comprehensive and consistent since Vol. 1. As mentioned, there weren’t any changes to the actual episodes unlike previous DVDs. But that’s fine if there are no legal changes to be made or anything else to update, so I’m okay with it. Maybe a short DVD-exclusive review or an extended review specially made for the DVD would be nice?
I thought the bonus stuff was really, really solid but the only thing I wish had been on there would be commentaries. I recall you got a few requests for them, tried them on Vol. 2 and I guess you didn’t care for them. Truth be told some of the stuff like the Virtual Reality Stuntmaster was so good there’s little room to really complain.
Oh, if possible, I think most people would prefer it comes out well before Christmas, so we don’t have to buy it mid-holiday shopping. I guess that’s a bigger complaint.
January 23, 2011 at 5:44 pm
Its great! I guess the only thing I would want again is the commentary for some episodes. I loved when volume 2 had it.
January 23, 2011 at 5:45 pm
At this point, I wouldn’t want to buy a volume, because I would want all the volumes!
any chance of having a box set when the AVGN movie hits?
you could sell volume 1-4(5?)+movie and I would be willing to pay for it all!
January 23, 2011 at 5:49 pm
Hey James I loved the dvd as a whole!!! I thought the feature where you and Mike were playing the VictorMax thing was hilarious! Did you guys ever figure out how or if that thing can connect to a SNES??? 😀
I also loved the behind the scenes of the Crazy Castle video. I would love to see more of those behind the scenes if you ever do another elaborate video like that.
I do have a question thou. Why is there no music on any of the menu screenes? Minor thing, but I always enjoyed the menu music.
Have you ever considered putting your old films on dvd for us to purchase? I think alot of us wouldn’t mind having that on dvd as well.
January 23, 2011 at 6:00 pm
I always love your DVD releases (though it’s always a shame when you have to cut movie references). The bonus features do take a lot of the spotlight in this volume, though. My roommate and I laughed our asses off watching you and Mike trying to figure out that VictorMax piece of shit. It probably wasn’t the strongest DVD release, but it’s worthy of its place among the other three.
January 23, 2011 at 6:33 pm
My brother and I enjoyed the long behind the scenes stuff, like the making of Crazy Castle, and the one where you guys just sit around trying to get that 3D thing to work. The batch of episodes are pretty fun ones, too–particularly the Castlevania marathon. Overall, I think volume 4 has been one of the best, or at least one of my favorites.
January 23, 2011 at 6:52 pm
I liked it a lot. Especially the tour of your game collection 8D Those are always amazing
Why no commentary tracks though?
January 23, 2011 at 7:04 pm
Hey there James,
I really enjoyed everything on the DVD, but thought that it would have been cool if you did an update to the Atari Jaguar video and shown off the working Jaguar CD like you did with the Dick Tracy review on Volume 3.
I thought that the features where you tried out the Victormax and never did get it to work as well as the making of the Crazy Castle episode as well as trying out the Sega 3D glasses were very awesome and entertaining! I also loved the “Hanging out with The Nerd” bonus feature on the DVD and would really like to see more of those on the future DVDs if possible.
I would have liked to see more commentary on the episodes which was what I really liked with the Volume 2 DVD. Otherwise, it’s a very great DVD and it’s very awesome to watch all of The Nerd episodes from 2009 whenever I want to 🙂
I also loved the look back at the Castlevania series from you’re perspective and would like to see more episodes like that for Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, or Mega Man in the future.
January 23, 2011 at 7:40 pm
Its good. Love it. I always love the deleted scenes and the behind the scenes stuff. I’d love a complete documentary on the entire process of doing a video. From initial playing, jamming ideas, writing, shooting, post-prod and final upload. That would be great.
Also, (maybe not on a dvd but on here) a tour of your vast DVD/BR/VHS collection. You got quite the set up in your LR. Would love to know what titles you have and what ones you’ve double dipped on.
January 23, 2011 at 7:45 pm
I would like to buy all the DVD’s in one package, but the only place I know they’re sold are the screwattack store, and they only seem to accept addresses from North America. I myself am Danish, so 🙁
January 23, 2011 at 8:36 pm
The dvd set is great, I wasn’t expecting much for bonus features and was surprised by what was included, all of the features were awesome.
As always, the episodes were rofl funny. I always show your dvds to my friends to see it since they don’t get the chance to watch it online. We all love it and laugh so hard.
January 23, 2011 at 10:21 pm
Hey James, this is something you should precise in any DVD related news, because it looks like a lot of people just don’t get it :
It’s not very explicit, but the DVDs can be shipped worldwide in any country if “Paypal” is selected as a method of payment.
By the way, you know what’s BULLSHIT ?!
When you tell everyone AVGN’s DVD is the most wanted present you want for Christmas, and nobody offered it to you.
THIS. IS. BULLSHIT.
January 23, 2011 at 10:53 pm
I don’t own Volume 4 yet, but I just got Volume 1 and 2 just this weekend after ordering them from screwattack for my birthday last Friday, and let me you that they make great gift! It was awesome to watch the Nerd on a bigger screen besides a computer-screen. I love behind-the-scenes stuff (huge sucker for that), and what you included was some of the most funny and interesting behind-the-scenes I’ve seen in a while. It looks like it’s a lot of fun to be a part of this (even though it’s about a man who is still pissed off at games that he was pissed off as a child). I love low-budget videos like this because they have a charm that some big-budget (especially modern ones) don’t seem to have. I rather watch films made by guys who love making movies (as well as just movies in general). Back on topic: James, your AVGN DVDs are great, I just got done with my two-day Nerd marathon and even though I can watch these on the Internet for free, I feels good I can support you on your quest to make film, anything that’s Nerd related or Cinemassacre related. It’s my way saying thanks for all your troubles that went in making some of these videos, but it looked you having a blast at the same time. Volumes 3 and 4, I’m sure are no different. Great videos, man! Keep on making ’em and I’ll be sure to watch ’em (as well as pick up Volumes 3 and 4 whenever I can to complete the Nerd DVD collection)!
January 23, 2011 at 10:55 pm
Sorry for any misspellings or typos, as I was (am) typing from my iPod Touch. ; 1
January 23, 2011 at 11:23 pm
I have never received mine, I ordered it from Screwattack on the 16 dec and despite numerouse emails and a paypal dispute, no box set.
I really hope you can start selling your merch through your site as opposed to screw attack, who dont care abaout fairness, customer service and honesty.
January 24, 2011 at 12:31 am
its the best bonus features u have had. i love all the behind the scenes stuff, from the making of, which i i hope u do more of. the 3d stuff u did and u guys just hanging out being yourself. also liked the feature with mike and title cards. was thinking about that before then saw it was going to be a feature and made me happy. only things i was wondering about were the waynes world episode with the stuff taken out, i was expecting something put in to make up difference, same with the jaguar cd one since u got a working one now. also why wasnt there no music at the menu screens this time? anyways loved it, thanks for all the hard work u guys do to entertain us
January 24, 2011 at 12:41 am
This was a nice volume. I enjoyed the extra features too, where you and Mike are messin’ around with those 3D goggle things.
However, I’m still waiting for the DVD extra where you elaborate on your creative process for making an episode.
When you create an episode, do you start with the writing? How do you go about picking the games? What kind of film equipment do you use? What software do you use to edit an episode? How long does it typically take to make an episode? Stuff like that. I’m really interested to see what goes into your creativity.
Nonetheless, this volume was cool. AVGN has come a long way!
January 24, 2011 at 1:16 am
Hey thanks everyone.
The Atari Jaguar CD could be it’s own review one day. Not sure, but always saving that. Honestly, I need to play more games for it and see what would make a good video.
Glad you liked the previous DVD’s audio commentaries. We didn’t do any this time, because there were so many bonus features already. We considered doing a commentary for the Crazy Castle episode, but the Behind-The-Scenes documentary pretty much said it all.
There was no music on the menu screens because the discs got full. (It was THAT close.) I personally don’t care much for music on the menus anyway. I’ll try to include some on the next one.
I see how you’d enjoy a detailed Making Of video of a particular episode. I think it would be a great idea, but very hard to make. The best way to document it would be to film myself making an episode from start to finish. It would be a lot of extra work. Sort of like making two videos at once. But I’d be glad to share the process with you. I’m not sure exactly how to approach it yet, but I will think about maybe doing that in the future sometime.
Glad the videos bring some joy, always.
January 24, 2011 at 1:59 am
My roommate just got the 4th volume. I won’t till March. I have all the other three though. They’re all great and I’ve watched them all at least a dozen times. I loved you extras on the Sega 3D glasses. I have hint of what I’d like to see episode 100 or at least one in the near future to be. A total history of the bit wars between Nintendo & Sega. Like comparing Super Mario Brothers for the NES & Alex Kidd For The Sega Master. Super Mario Bros. for the SNES with Sonic The Hedgehog for the Genesis. Duck Hunt on the SNES to Safari Hunt on the Sega Master. Shinobi on Master and Ninja Gaiden on NES and so on and so on. I think that would make for a killer special, maybe 2 or 3 parts, of showing what each had to offer in comparison to the other. And possibly even the Japanese differences if you have that ability. I’ve been toying with that dream episode for months now and just thought it was time to share that idea with you. Keep doing the great work you do James. : )
January 24, 2011 at 2:11 am
Hey James, what happened to some video of the line outside your panel? I saw a video cameraman from cinemassacre and the person filmed me near the front of the line for about 7 seconds. I didnt get in the panel, but I got 3 autographs, a picture and got in another cinemassacre camera when i met you at at the autograph line. I was the teenager wearing the blue Patriots hat, you signed a Avgn card to Philip, thank you very much. I look forward to monster madness 2011 and this year’s avgn episodes
January 24, 2011 at 2:15 am
the dvd was good, I would have liked to see more bloopers, rather than just for the crazy castle video. I liked the menus and the extras were great. . the artwork on the case and cds was brilliant.
January 24, 2011 at 2:32 am
great dvd, overall was a good dvd, but I wish there were more special features, the season 1 and 2 dvds had tons of bloopers, I havent seen the 3rd dvd so i don’t know about that but I wish you spent more time on the extras, Would have loved to see more commentaries like season 2 dvd , loves those ,. please with your 5th dvd please do some commentaries and add lots of bloopers if you can. Thanks for the great dvd
January 24, 2011 at 6:14 am
Still waiting on my copy (damn customs taking forever), but I’ll let you know as soon as it gets here.
January 24, 2011 at 6:21 am
I’m not commenting bout the DVD tho read and heard needs more extras and bloopers but i bet 100 bucks that the 100th episode in march… (My birthday month! thanks for making the 100th episode in march altho thats my predictions anyways)…will be ET! in ep 98 day dreamin’ davey, there were a few clips of ET stuff and it seems you’re teasing us and giving us extra notice as it comes closer to the 100th episode.
Stuie the Midget kid
January 24, 2011 at 6:29 am
Still shipping… takes ages from US to Austria
January 24, 2011 at 9:26 am
I have the entire set now and I definitely like the 3rd and 4th volumes the best. Use these two as a basis for what your future dvds should be like. I love the bonus features on these DVDs. It’s honestly the majority of the reason I buy them. The more extras the better. Keep em coming. Thanks!
January 24, 2011 at 9:38 am
my copy is currently being held hostage by her Majesties’ Royal Mail because the UK Government has slapped £15 charge on top for import taxes… damn it! I don’t have £15 spare till the end of the week at pay day so my copy is sat 10 mins down the road under lock and key until I go and pay these silly demands 🙁
January 24, 2011 at 9:49 am
James, if you can get your hands on a copy of the ‘Adam & Joe’ DVD, see the link, then I think you’d really enjoy it for many reasons. the DVD menus are really funny and I’d love to see something like this on your DVDs.
It was a UK show and it’s pretty hard to get the DVD outside of the UK, but defo worth hunting down! The type of show would really suit and I know you’d enjoy it.
January 24, 2011 at 10:30 am
Wow £15 ($20.45) for an import tax? My god that is fucking ridiculous.
January 24, 2011 at 10:56 am
^ Browncoats right. Import taxes suck.
Bought the Third and Fourth Volumes together and much preferred the amount of Bonus Content on the Fourth Volume. You did a really good job with just how much behind the scenes material you showed us, all of them being real interesting too.
Am I the only person who misses the Commentary tracks from the second Volume though?… man were they good, if you ever see this, consider those commentary tracks again.
January 24, 2011 at 12:10 pm
I enjoy it. However, I was hoping for a few updates to some episodes like you did the dvd volume 3. The one episode I thought that was sure to get an update was with the jaguar cd since you now have a working one. I do agree that some bloopers/the making of/ for more episodes would be a nice inclusion.
January 24, 2011 at 12:13 pm
@ browncoat – HELL YEAH that really is ridiculous!
if only Screw Attack would not declare it as merch on the outside of the shpping box, they should put it down as a ‘gift’ and it would slip under the import tax radar… SUCKS!
January 24, 2011 at 12:15 pm
I haven’t had a chance to watch it just yet but I’ll be certain to do that soon. My complaint is the difficulty I have with putting the discs back into their slots. They don’t quite sit right…. IT’S BULLSHIT! Ok, it isn’t that bad but it still makes me uneasy that I’ll open up the box and have the DVDs fall out onto the floor.
January 24, 2011 at 12:34 pm
I really liked the DVD. But I gotta say that the first 3 were better when it comes to the menues and stuff. The menues on Vol 1 & 2 were animated, and the 4th Volume didn’t even have music. It seemed a bit cheaper if I’m allowed to say that. But like I said, I really liked the DVD.
January 24, 2011 at 12:43 pm
and now I’ve read James’ comment about the music. I didn’t say anything 😉
January 24, 2011 at 1:23 pm
James I thought the new DVD’s bonus features was cool and unique, but I would liked to have seen outtakes from all the episodes not just the crazy castle episode, other than that great job.
The 25$ in tax+customs kind of sucked (I bought all the volumes) so you might want to mention to the Screwattack-guys that they should send it as a gift (I forgot/didnt really know about it) but in the end its all good 😉 Totally worth it! Even more extra material would have been nice but at the same time I dont want you to hide the good stuff from the fans that dont want to pay up..
Many #%/#¤#” and ¤”#@€7¤ greetings from NES-loving SWEDEN!
January 24, 2011 at 3:14 pm
I live in the UK and oddly I didn’t have a problem with import tax at all. Maybe it had something to with ordering just after Christmas but I never had that problem with any of the AVGN DVDs. One thing I missed was the intro, yeah okay, it’s on all the videos you post but I loved popping in the DVD and hearing that awesome opening guitar riff followed by Justin’s vocals. I loved the extras with you and Mke with the Sega 3D glasses and the VR helmet. I think a nice idea would be to do videos like that exploring games and other such console peripherals which you never got to cover in the series.
Another great idea would be a DVD exclusive episode.
January 24, 2011 at 4:01 pm
i want the dvd but i don’t know if they ship to portugal
January 24, 2011 at 5:03 pm
I really enjoyed Volume 4. It was cool to see the making of Crazy Castle, but the feature I liked the most was that video of you and Mike trying to set up that stupid Virtual Reality Stunt Master peripheral. It was cool to see you guys just hanging out and it turned in to a funny kind of mini-review of the device as you tried to figure it out. Really enjoyed that.
The only request I might have is maybe you guys could do commentaries again like on Volume 2? I understand there’s not always much more to say on the reviews, but I’m a sucker for commentary tracks on DVDs.
January 24, 2011 at 5:10 pm
I am a big fan of the volume 4 DVD. It contains some (obviously) great game reviews with lots of replay value. I would very much like to see a commentary track option over the reviews (assuming you feel there is enough to say to warrant this). With that said, the special features and the collectibility factor are the main reasons for anyone to buy the DVDs. Like other reviewers, I really enjoyed the unscripted tour and “hanging out” scenes. There can never be enough of that content. Deleted scenes are always a nice feature, but I’m not sure if you have any of those. Otherwise it might be nice to see you and the crew just hanging out, playing some shitty games and doing some riffing of how bad it is.
As always, keep up the good work.
January 24, 2011 at 5:53 pm
I enjoyed vol.4
some of the extras while very interesting seemed to drag on for a while which makes me not want to see them twice or at least not for a long time (example being the 3D glasses)
wish there was some commentaries but not too important to me
I liked seeing Mike’s desk/work area
January 24, 2011 at 9:04 pm
I loved the “hanging out in the nerds room” part. You should do more of those
January 24, 2011 at 9:22 pm
Like all of the others, volume 4 is superb. It was entertaining to watch you and Mike mess around with the 3D glasses and Virtual Reality accessories. I enjoy it whenever you try out the obscure and sum up your experiences. The making of “Crazy Castle” is pretty interesting. It’s cool to learn about all of the tough and tricky behind the scenes work involved for your more elaborate videos. Overall, I am very satisfied with Volume 4’s content. For future volumes, I would suggest that you include bonus critiques of games/accessories in character as the AVGN. These extras would be exclusive to the DVDs and probably give fans a bit more incentive to purchase them. I look forward to buying Volume 5 when it comes out, keep up the awesome work!
January 24, 2011 at 10:10 pm
I haven’t bought volume 4 yet, but I have the other 3, so I will be commenting on those. The video quality is good and content is good (A years worth of content is fair, similar to a TV series’ season.)
Only 2 things I can think of to make them better is:
1) If possible you should try making them also on Blu-ray so you can fit all the content on one disc, instead of spread over 2-4 disc.
2) Also put in a commentary for every episode. (If there is any bonus feature on a DVD, it should be the commentary. [Most insight of the bonus features.])
January 24, 2011 at 10:11 pm
I did a video review of it on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPPeCf5sEIA
Long story short, the cover art looks like it was done in the same style as Volume 1 (art for 2 and 3 look similar, and 1 and 4 look similar in styles). I thought the bonus features were a great improvement from volume 3, and think you should keep this format of having a couple extras of checking out other stuff.
I’d say the biggest recommendation I could make is to have audio commentary of ALL the episodes. Include Mike and another guy or two that helps you and just discuss whatever comes to mind.
Curious (if ya get time to read this and respond): after going down from bi-weekly to monthly videos, will you keep the 3 DVD format for Volume 5 and fill it with extra stuff, or will you keep the same amount and type of extras and go down to 2 disc sets?
January 24, 2011 at 11:29 pm
I was excited when you told me that you’d be doing an additional Nerd Room video, and it did not disappoint! It’s so cool to get an updated tour every once in a while. It’s such a cool room!
Loved the Making of Crazy Castle feature, love the behind the scenes stuff!
Outtakes are always amazing. Especially this volume’s outtakes.
It was also cool to listen to Mike talk about his influences during the Title Cards extra. He has a cool work room.
I really enjoyed the commentaries we got on Vol. 2, but I also realize that doing commentaries for all of the videos would be super time consuming.
Unrelated to the DVD’s themselves, I LOVED the Castlevania compilation. Easily one of my favorite Nerd works.
Can’t wait for Vol. 5!
January 24, 2011 at 11:34 pm
OH, one more minor thing!
I definitely liked the way the DVD box was setup. With the Vol 2 and 3 DVD’s, it was annoying to have to pull out the second disc so you could get to the third one if that’s what you wanted to watch. I think having the plastic divider with a disc on each side then the standard dvd slot on the right-hand side was a good design.
January 25, 2011 at 2:42 am
I love the extra features. I liked the virtual reality thing and the 3d glasses. I like the more layed back style of those I also like the title cards and making of crazy castle. I just liked all the bonus material thaqt you put ikn there. I would love to see you do the atari accessories on bonus features or any other gaming accessories or systems that you just do not have enough material on to do an episode on.
I collect video games too and I would love to have a huge collection like you have one day. I find all the old video game systems, games, and accessories really interesting. I think that it is amazing that you know all this information about all the game systems games and accessories.
Also I would love to see a review on ROB the robot. Every time that I see your NES accessories episode I am sad that you do not have a review on ROB yet. i really want to see your thoughts on ROB the robot.
Keep doing what you love! ; )
January 25, 2011 at 8:41 am
I would comment about it if i could buy it…
´No shipping to euorope FML
January 25, 2011 at 9:33 am
Shipping to Europe is available. I’m European and I got the set a couple of weeks ago. Loved it!
January 25, 2011 at 9:54 am
I love Volume 4 the best actually. I like all the fun you and Mike have in the Extras. I would love to see more of that on Volume 5. Specially systems or games you found not alot to talk about for an AVGN episode. Like that thing on VHS tapes. That be fun to see in action. Also Love the NES collection video but I personally would of watched a half hour long one to see everything you got. I did notice in the video as you scan over the whole thing there is a few blue carts in there. Repo carts from Retrozone? Anyways keep up the great work and i’ll be awaiting to buy Volume 5.
January 25, 2011 at 12:51 pm
vol 4 had great extras. It was really cool to see those gogles, i had no idea that those things excisted. My only complaint is that there where no comentarys. Next dvd, more comentary and more veird game stuff like the gogles
January 25, 2011 at 3:42 pm
Not everyone has a Blu-ray player, and they are pretty expensive.
January 25, 2011 at 10:12 pm
Vol 4 was by far the best so far.
The quality of the episodes is excellent, and the bonus features were hilarious.
I really enjoyed the bugs bunny outtakes and making of. Highly informative and tons of laughs.
A new tour of the nerd room with Mike was entertaining as always.
Hope to see more with mike in the next dvd release and maybe even have justin and Kevin as well.
The virtual reality device feature was down right hilarious. The clamp portion had me in stitches.
The title card feature with mike was interesting. It was neat to see them before they were put into photoshop and colored. I loved the reference to metallica’s garage days re-revisited album cover for the re-revisited episodes. As metallica is my fave band i was shocked i didn’t clue in to that.
I give the dvd a 5 star rating. Now unfortunately it is time to wait until vol 5. Something i could suggest to bring the next dvd to a higher level would be possibly some commentary tracks, More outtakes for several episodes, Some more fan stuff, and maybe instead of just 3 discs i would love to see a full disc of just bonus stuff. Cost is of no concern when it comes to the nerd.
Also would love to see a review of Cave man games at some point. As the nerd has a hatred for games that just beg for a turbo controller this is definately one of those games. Keep up the great work and can’t wait to see more.
January 25, 2011 at 11:07 pm
Blu-Ray is a must… if it would benefit from the transfer. You do get to see a lot more on the DVD such as the laser pointer with the cat. Mike’s drawings were probably the best thing on there because he showed the comic book for his inspiration. The Worlds of Power would have been a nice bonus. I missed the music that plays on the menus because I usually let the show run even when I’m not paying attention at the end. But putting the default selection on Play All is useful. Autoplay would be nice if there wouldnt be music. Looking forward to Volume 5 and hopefully the wait isn’t too long. And would Jurassic Park really be a review someday? I haven’t watched all of Disc 2 yet or the reviews on Disc 3 but I will.
January 25, 2011 at 11:25 pm
James I loved Vol4 the extras were just awesome!
BUT! The lack of main menu music did make me sad…
I’m betting it was a space issue, trying to fit all that stuff on a DVD…
Any-who cant wait for Vol5, and I love the Cover art!
Mike your a freakin genius!
January 26, 2011 at 6:15 am
I’m loving these DVDs but I’m just wondering when we are going to see Board James on DVD!
January 26, 2011 at 7:06 am
I still haven’t received my AVGN Vol 4 DVD. I have been trying to trace it but it seems that the tracking number is invalid. I have emailed screwattack and I got a messege back. It said that it may take 8 weeks to receive it. It has been more than 8 weeks and I still don’t have it. I am now getting angry like the nerd.

In some of the previous volumes, some of the episodes had extras, like the Jack Bros bit in the virtual boy episode, and I thought that was really cool. I don’t know if it’s because there was no space for that in this volume or if you didn’t have anything to add about any of them, but I kinda missed those bonuses.
Otherwise it looks great, sounds great, and it’s fun to watch. Despite not being a big fan of the Crazy Castle review (sorry :P), I still really enjoyed watching the making of for it, it was very fun and insightful, and the other extras like the 3D glasses were nice.
Good stuff overall, I love having these on DVD if I wanna watch them with my friends.

Straight away to everybody abroad:
Screwattack ships internationally (and always confirms that you rock)
I had never experienced any troubles getting the DVDs or shirts to Germany, although it might take some weeks.
To the question at hand, I really like the DVDs with the bonus stuff being on top of the list. I actually enjoy seeing James and Mike out of character and talking about the work that goes into all the videos. I would love a commentary track for the videos, but I am happy with anything that goes beyond the videos.
Please make sure to always include outtakes on all upcoming DVDs, the more the better.
Then again, I buy the DVDs mostly as a way to support cinemassacre and anything on them is a nice bonus anyway.

You need to fix the way you render the videos. Every time something bright red appears on screen, it’s all pixely. And I’ve tried watching the DVDs on my computer, my PS3, my friend’s PS3 and a projector, and the problem is always there. But besides that, I like them a lot (I have all 4).
January 27, 2011 at 12:40 am
It was great man, i would love to see more making of”s in the future, and like Vol 2 i want more commentaries too, but Vol 4 is my fav dvd yet
January 27, 2011 at 11:39 am
Good extras, but I would’ve really wanted some commentaries on the videos. Also the little extra bits like on the Indiana Jones and Virtual Boy videos were missed.

@Andrew Drysdale: You haven’t been waiting 8 weeks because the DVD isn’t even out that long. It’s been a little over 5 weeks since my order shipped and I’m still waiting as well (I’m from the Netherlands). I’ve never had any trouble with shipment from ScrewAttack in the past, so I’m confident it will eventually get here. Just give it some time.

received it yesterday! w00t! finally paid the taxing loser Government their ransom and picked up my copy from the Post Office! still watching it it bits when I have the chance, lovin it! MORE EXTRAS! and more animated / interactive menus! lovin the new DVD box as others have mentioned.
ALSO! I got myself one of your tshirts! they are awesome! really decent quality and the screen printing on them is top as well! what id really like to see is MORE tshirts in your shop! honestly id buy them all!
January 29, 2011 at 9:20 pm
My copy also finally showed up. It looks awesome next to volumes 1-3 on my shelf. 🙂
I watched the extras on disc 3 today and they were all interesting. I especially enjoyed the footage of you and Mike “hanging out” in the Nerd Room, I’d love to see more of that stuff on future volumes! I also liked the idea mentioned a few pages back about a more comprehensive “making of” video that details the creative process behind making a Nerd episode from the writing phase to the finished product. But the primary reason I keep buying these is to support James/Cinemassacre and allowing him to keep producing AVGN videos in the first place. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Got all 4 volumes to date. Good stuff, good quality (both footage and DVD case/labels), it’s definitely worth the money, especially if your a hardcore fan. I actually went straight to the extras disc only because I’ve seen your videos a few times over.
I love the one about the Genesis Virtual Reality Stuntmaster, I don’t ever recall seeing that thing in stores…maybe that’s a good thing. It’s not a surprise that they sold such a piece of shat, a stupid gimmick that worked for one system…just like the powerglove. You know, until I watched your videos, I never knew how to setup the powerglove…when I was a kid, I figured you just plugged it in and it was supposed to work…but since it didn’t, I just figured that everybody had a defective one.
Was it really that bad on the eyes? Just an “in your face” mini television in those huge goggles?
Anyway, I liked the “Making of the Crazy Castle” too, I didn’t realize how much thought and work really went into it. It seems so simple when watching it play out, you have more appreciation when you see the behind the scenes footage, thanks for sharing that.
I wouldn’t mind seeing footage on how you put together these DVD’s or how you put together the videos themselves…just like a quick run through on how it’s done, what programs you use, etc.
Anyway, good stuff, keeping making DVD’s and I’ll keep buying them. Thanks again! Come to Canada sometime (Ontario) so I can meet you. I live right by the Falls, pay a visit sometime.

I would like a free sampler, keep making them James, we love you and all your boom anticts.
boom boom boom

Awesome addition to the collection James. The reviews were classic nerd and the bonus features were the funniest i have seen yet. Keep it up James your the man

Greetings from your biggest fan from Brazil!
I received part 3 and 4 a few days ago and I can say they’re great as usual.
Just want to suggest, if it is possible put more outtakes and bloopers in the next DVD. It’s obvius most people buy AVGN dvds to support your work and see things they don’t see here on the website.
Off: mofo Mike is a great drawer! I’d like to see a video of him making one of those title cards.
Really looking forward to your movie! =D

Hey James! I thought the vol.4 DVD was great. The bonus features were a lot of fun, as usual.
I love that there has been a consistency with the features from volume to volume. Outtakes & bloopers, Screwattack Top 10’s, and episode trailers for example, are included on each volume and its good to know that things like that haven’t (and hopefully won’t) change. I also love seeing the evolution on “The Nerd Room” from year to year. I nearly shit myself when I saw you had an Action Max! I had that piece of crap and I could never understand how the fuck it worked. Having Mike Mattei involved with the “behind the scenes” and “making of” is great and makes it even more fun.
I am very curious as to what your plans are for the vol.5 dvd. With the episodes having been shortened to one a month, the next dvd will probably only have 12-15 episodes, so I’m guessing you may want to do more special features to give fans a little extra. Here’s a few suggestions I hope you may consider:
1. Commentaries- I know you have already done this on the vol.2 dvd, and listening to you, Justin and Mike was hilarious. I think it would be great to do a few episode commentaries for the next volume, as well.
2. Bonus episode content- One of the things I loved about the vol.3 dvd was the unexpected extra material in a few of the episodes, “Dick Tracy” and “Virtual Boy” come quickest to mind. The added stuff really made the dvd worth getting, as it makes for a different viewing experience from the online original versions.
3. Maybe include an exclusive “DVD only” Angry Nerd episode- It could be just a quick review or a retrospective thing, but perhaps a DVD exclusive may be something worth trying.
4. Include an episode or two of YKWBS or Board James- I know everyone loves the Nerd, but you’ve done some other cool stuff, too. A sample of Board James or YKWBS on an upcoming AVGN dvd would be a great treat for some of those who are maybe unfamiliar with your other projects.
5. Fan Q & A- I know you get asked a shit ton of questions from your loyal fanbase on a regular basis, but I think a section on the dvd that addresses the most frequently asked questions (as well as a few funny or obscure ones) would be a great thing for the fans.
That’s all for now. Looking forward to all of your future projects!

This is the first volume I’ve actually watched and I have to say I love it. I’m looking forward to the first three volumes now.
1) The extras are very good quality, I especially enjoy the tours of your video games and other gaming stuff.
2) How about switching to widescreen video? It probably won’t make much of a difference online but would look great on my widescreen TV 🙂
3) I have a blu-ray player, maybe look into putting everything on to one disc instead of multiple ones like every volume so far. It doesn’t have to be HD.
Anyway, keep doing what you’re doing, it’s awesome stuff!

Just an update. I commented that I didn’t receive my AVGN vol 4 DVD. Today when I got home from work guess what. There in my mail box was a package. I opened it and in the cardboard box I finally I got my DVD. I know it isn’t screw attacks fault that it took 2 months to get it but I can’t help that they should’ve try to help me track it down. Anyway the DVD is awesome. I really am a nerd fan. Great Job James.

I like the DVDs. Here are just a couple things they were missing:
1. Don’t cut out the intros (they’re different for every episode anyway)
2. Audio commentary for every episode. Doesn’t have to all be James or Mike, could be from other people connected with the show like Liam, Kevin, Kyle, etc. If there’s one thing a DVD just isn’t a DVD without, it’s an audio commentary track. (And really, couldn’t you at least have included the 2 you did for Nightmare and Friday the 13th?)
3. I wasn’t really a fan of the explanation sequence on Wizard of Oz, should have left it as the re-cut fan videos to make the intro song.

Finally received my collection yesterday, was my birthday gift but delivery took quite a few weeks so it happened to become a valentine’s day gift.
Now, that’s a pretty cool valentine’s day gift ^^
Didn’t have time to go through em yet though, wanna do an AVGNathon in the near future grinding through all 4 DVDs

March 30, 2011 at 4:39 am
I have received the DVD a while ago it stood proudly next to my other avgn DVD’s, I finally found the time to look at it and it’s super!!! Nice extras to!! Mike is good at drawing, a nice extra could be a comic, printed or a digital booklet on the DVD???? maby a game whereof not enough material for a video?
big fan from Belgium

DVD is cool!
The menus are cool, always being different, I know you have less time, but I remember the older DVD when I pressed play all, you would say “now you’re hard core!” that was funny, so maybe something like that for Vol.5.
So miss the animated menus.
Just as the other comments say,
Commentary, making of DVD, YKWBS & Board James.
maybe a Avgn Intro Montage of all the random clips you used? because the intros are not on the disc, which is good for playing all the videos. But the montages can be put together as a music video?
The DVDs are great! keep the good videos! love the extras!
Wondering about subtitles… O_o imagine the subtitles saying “Sounds of shit spitting… ” Would be good for people who can’t hear well for a super laugh right? I won’t mind helping typing the subtitles
July 25, 2011 at 1:04 am
oh and maybe, as an extra, you can do a video commentary of you and mike playing a newer game, just sitting there and talking and playing, simple to make too!
