    I had posted on here that he should review this game months ago. I hope that I somehow inspired him to look at it and do a review.
    It’s honestly horrible. I could never get past the first damn screen where those rocks(bushes?)that look like an arrow. I guess I never really tried that hard because after playing it for that long I knew it was horrible.

    Interesting episode… I remember this game from Nintendo Power back in the day, but I’m not sure I’ve ever actually played it.

    Decent review, but it seemed very lacking in the typical quality we’ve come to expect from you. I really don’t get why you didn’t wear a long sleeve shirt to cover up your thermal underwear. I just found that odd, like you just threw this episode together on the fly and didn’t care about all the little details like you had before. You just didn’t seem to give much effort into being the “Nerd”. Felt like I was watching James doing the review looking like the “Nerd”. I know that sounds odd, but I don’t see the “Nerd’ and James as the same thing. I see the “Nerd” as a character, not a person like I do James. Sorry, I usually don’t complain about AVGN episodes, but that was most definitely not your best. I thought the whole point of doing one video a month was to make better videos. It just seems to me like you’re loosing creative interest in your work. I can understand that, I mean you’ve been making these for about 6 years now, doing the same thing over and over again does take it’s toll. Maybe you should take a few months off from doing the Nerd. Go on a vacation with the wife so you can re-energize your creative juices. I’m sorry if I sound like a jerk, I’m not meaning to. I just thought something didn’t seem right and needed to be said.

    great as always sir, but i have to admit it wasnt the actuall episode that made me happy. in the intro i noticed you grab a vhs tape for the actionmax. before i had an nes i had the actionmax. and i still remember long after the system broke, being young and just watching the rescue of pops ghostly, as well as…i think it was sonic flury…where your a space pilot and it starts with you and like 1 or 2 team members basically going into “morphing time” and comeing out looking like jesse ventura in the running man, with the cheesy armor. and the rest of the game was basically anime backgrounds as you shot down robots and other flyers. any way, i just wanted to thank you for reminding me of a long forgotten but still cherished childhood memory. thank you james…err…Mr.Nerd

    That Could be one of the most epic beginnings to a game i have ever witnessed, oh truly this will be a classic for the nerd!! each month i patiently wait like i did as a child for a new episode of my favorite shows! and time after time the quality is getting more perfected! but seriously…you had a really good thing goin on with Board James!! the people love it we demand it! hahaha i just wanna thank you also for introducing me to Nostalgia Critic! its the same type of humor but dif genre!

    i agree with TwistedSpeech it just didn’t feel like an A.V.G.N . episode to me. I say you follow TwistedSpeech’s advice and take a vacation for a bit. Sometimes that’s all you need to get the creative juices flowing again. Oh and by the way i say if you’re tired and “Bored” bring some more bored James to the table. :) That or some more of your own films out. :D And here’s wishing you happy and prosperous 2011 Mr. Rolfe! :D

    I enjoy that this game implements psychological elements to delineate the peripheries of the real and dream worlds. One example would be the reiteration of the word draw as Davy is being transported to the dream world. The word draw subliminally pits Davy in the wild west where one would “draw” in a duel. Also, the pencil is clearly a phallic representation of Davy’s inadequacies.

    I don’t know about all of you guys, but the Nerd made me stop watching TV, almost 3 years ago, and made me watch his show. I became addicted to all sorts of reviews and rants and whatnots, checking those particular sites every day, several times.
    Now, dear Mr. Rolfe, I couldn’t thank you enough for the fun and delight you have given me during this time but having said this, I have to ask you something. Are getting tired of your own show? Do you continue this, because it is mandatory and an obligation to rant about 20 year old control schemes and that pushing up for jumping isn’t that great of an idea?
    If so, then I guess anybody of us cheapass viewer would understand whatever you would like to change in you concept. I don’t understand why you couldn’t review those games you obviously love passionately.
    Honestly, you possess the power to share your delight for something so well, that you even made me watch godzilla movies. You love movies so much that you had to go down to movies like ‘Ricky 1′ to have something bad about them to say. I could go on forever, but to close things up:
    If I had this basement, packed with all kind of games, it would really piss me off only to pop in the stinker.

    Sorry, but this is my least favorite AVGN episode. It really looked like James was very tired while making it. That made me sleepy too. I’ve never played the game and it acually looked pretty good or at least playable.
    Stop making mediocre games reviews, James. Make something that means something for you so we could see your passion like in previuos eps.

    I think/hope james will make E.T review as his 100 AVGN episode and for the 99th episode id like to see ” Ice Climber ” on snes maybe James and Mike dressed to 2 eskimo’s playing Ice Climber on 2 player and swearing and having fun? :D , and after that retire the nerd for a while and maybe come up with some Board James and newer game reviews? =)

    I just wish that James had set release dates like Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic). I’m not saying one video a week, if it’s going to be one a month that’s fine I just wish James would pick a day of the month and stick to it so I don’t have to check the website randomly every now and then.

    Some of you people are out of your damn minds. Sure, it’s your opinion that this episode wasn’t all that good, but for the life of me, I can’t see what you’re seeing.

    I thought the episode was great. Not boring or dry or humorless. In fact, I laughed out loud at a few points (turd measuring and headless teacher, ftw).

    If James seems burnt out to you, maybe it’s because you know how hard he works and how rarely he gets a break, so you put it upon him in your own head that he’s “burnt out.” Or maybe he is burnt out from providing hours and hours of free entertainment to everyone. Either way, he’s busting his ass and some folks need to be a little more appreciative of that fact.

    It’s true my first reaction is “whatever”, but mark my words the next time I see that video I am going to start laughing my ass off. You need to be in the right mindframe to enjoy things.

    Of course, it does make sense that the Nerd isn’t in high spirits right now. I mean he most likely filmed this during the Christmas break, and really that should be enough of an indicator right there.

    Great episode. Some people seem to expect a big production every episode. While those are fun, and it’s great to see them, they can’t be done every episode, and they’d probably get repetitive to make and to watch after doing them so many times. It’s nice to see “regular” episodes mixed in with the more action oriented ones. They’re more like your original episodes.

    Great review! I really liked the new opening sequence…of course mainly because it had the skeleton flipping the bird which is my favorite bit out of all of your videos (Game Glitch Gremlin is a close second). ;)

    I remember hearing about this game back in the day but I never played it…and man I’m glad now that I never did. Did anyone else notice that the sword noises sounded exactly the same as in Robin Hood for the NES (also a crappy game)?

    This game also reminded me of Time Lord a bit as well…which I’m pretty sure isn’t a good thing either. :0

    These past few AVGN’s were funny, but I haven’t seen that much actual anger lately. not much screaming or outraged reactions at the ridiculous games, none of the old over reactions or angry analogies. maybe he’s saving up for episode 100. I’ve never really heard of this E.T. Atari thing, but it does seem to be extremely infamous among gamers. can’t wait.

    I’d say the story reminded me of Calvin and Hobbes, where Calvin’s active imagination would take him to crazy paces, such as the adventures of Spaceman Spiff, but that would be doing injustice to the greatness of Calvin and Hobbes; because Calvin wasn’t some narcoleptic dumbass with such a limited imagination that he had the same dream like 5 different times. This game could have been interesting if he had fantasies related to whatever class he was in. Art class could have been the renaissance, the principal’s office could have been a prison or something, he could have had a space adventure during science class, you know, VARY it a little!

    So I was looking at this television tropes and idioms website, and read a description of “unpleasable fanbase,” and thought about AVGN fans. First, they complain when James does something new and different like the Christmas special. Now, he does a more traditional, old school episode and… people complain.

    Great episode James. It wasn’t a standout, but that’s fine. Not every episode can outshine the rest. And the Christmas special was a tough act to follow. I like how you went old school AVGN for this one.

    Just some constructive criticism here. I love your vids and while some I like more than others, you do a great job.

    - I really miss the intros you used to do before diving into the actual game. Lately some of them have been jarring at the beginning. I realize it’s more work for you, but it’s fun to see you bullshit for a couple minutes first like when you review a console or like in the Ninja Gaiden video.

    - Again just personal opinion, but I don’t think it would be so bad to cash in on some of the obvious games/systems people want reviewed. Not all of them but something like the 3DO is begging to be reviewed. In short something people are a little more familiar with.

    Hey James, i think it was good episode, what about making a review about Sega’s Outrun Franchise? and the shitty ports to the different consoles? I know it will be hard because the great outrun classics run on arcade machines, but the ports are very very shitty, maybe you can give it a try!!

    But, yeah, this isn’t his best episode. In fact, I think it’s the worst he’s made since the beginning, but that doesn’t stop it from being utterly hilarious and entertaining. Besides, the poor bastard, like he said, had only 3 days to do this and he already looks tired as all hell. I’m with you on this, I really do think James is doing too much work. Take a vacation, dammit! Fuck your wife or something. There’s more important things in life than entertaining people you don’t really know for the most part and that would be “entertaining” your wife.

    I’m surprised there are so many “worst episode” comments about this one. It certainly was nothing special and definitely not the first vid I’d look to if I were trying to show off AVGN at his finest, but the worst he’s ever made?

    Nah, I think some of the ones near the end of his “every other week” schedule were far more lacking (like Hydlide and Swordquest), for understandable reasons of course. And Lester the Unlikely much more underwhelming than this one. But we all have different opinions. Mine is that this one was one of the weaker AVGN episodes but far from the worst of them all.

    I thought this episode was great! The game looks kinda fun, but the premise is friggin ridiculous. It looks pretty damn easy too. I’m guessing you aren’t a fan of sports games because I rarely ever see them in your vids. Might i suggest a marathon of shitty football games for superbowl February?

    Loved the episode, but that’s not why I decided to comment. I’m incredibly surprised that of all the commenters only one noticed the GIGANTIC factual error: mistaking ancient Greece for ancient Rome in such an obvious setting was inexcusable and kind of thrown me out of the experience a little. Other than that as entertaining as always. Thanks!

    The review wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either.
    You can’t expect James to create an epic, instant-classic masterpiece once a month!
    My rating: 3 1/2 shitpickles out of five. (on total entertainment meter, not compared to anything else from the Nerd)

    Where did all the levels go? I mean look at Kirby, it is so action-packed, non-redundant animated backgrounds, flawless gameplay, almost no glitches (I once managed to fly below the world without dying but that works once in a hundred times and when you freeze an enemy as ice-Kirby and press select, the icecube becomes pink), inside gags (eg. the Gameboy level or the HAL Easter egg)…

    And for those who critizise the Nerd by only saying “duuuh stupid episode” and such:
    Happy Shut The Fuck Up!

    Holy freaking crap! The teacher in the game looks almost exactly like Miss Wormwood from Calvin and Hobbes! The principal kinda looks like the pointy-hair boss from Dilbert too.

    I liked the video. Sure it’s not on par with fighting Bugs Bunny or anything else that’s awesomely scripted like that, but I don’t think that there’s really anything you could do like that for this game. It’s just a bad and boring game.

    Anger is just not there anymore. I think the problem is that you’re reviewing the games too much. Also, if I am correct, your video may be entirely scripted (?) to the point where you leave out a lot of spontaneous reactions. I miss the old avgn, always made me laugh to the point where tears ran down my face.

    I really liked the Super Mario Bros 2 ending theme at the end of the episode. While this episode wasn’t as action packed as some of the others, I still found it to be very enjoyable to watch and I did learn about a game I have never played before. Stumbled upon this when I wasn’t expecting a new AVGN to be out for a while so it certainly brightened my day.

    I actually understand what he is saying in this comment. To me, this episode feels more like James is going by a script (yes I know it’s scripted) than he is being angry at the game. It’s like he just picked a random game he never played before and did a video on it. There was no real anger in this one. I know the AVGN is just a character but what got me hooked on this stuff was literally how frustrated James gets because I too get that frustrated with games, especially old ones (I’m James’s age). To me, and this is just my opinion so don’t freak out, a lot of the more recent episodes (with the exception of Jekyl and Hyde pt 2 vid) have lacked this type of anger/passion. Maybe its just me realizing that its more acting than it is James being himself. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way, it’s just not the same as it used to be. I still love the AVGN and I’ll still keep watching every month. I just wanted to speak my mind because I feel like the series is getting weaker because of this. Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about (which is entirely possible) but this is just my opinion. I am by no means telling James what to do or how to run his work. I fully appreciate all the hard work and effort that goes into this. I’m still a fan and will always be one. I just hope the series go back to the days of Silver Surfer. Man, there is no other episode (in my opinion) funnier than that one. You can honestly feel the pain he goes through in that episode and it’s hilarious. That level of realism is what makes the AVGN so awesome. Either way, I still love the site and James does other things on here just as well as the AVGN so don’t take this as a complaint. Either way, keep up the good work James. Most of us appreciate it.

    When I wrote that post, I didn’t even think about the holiday and the toll that takes on people. I had to travel all over the damn place for 5 days to see family and friends and then add work to that and I completely understand why this episode isn’t on par with some of the older stuff. I apologize for not being more considerate of the time frame he had to do this vid in.

    I do still stand by my post though. For the most part, the mediocre obscure games that James does (this one, Lester, etc) just don’t seem to have the same level of passion/anger that the older ones did. I think all of us would willingly wait longer for another “Silver Surfer” or “NES Accessories” episode than get Lester and Davey in a shorter time frame. To me, the games that you can tell that really piss James off tend to be the better episodes. The dialogue gets more creative, the cursing gets more explicit, and the skits are usually better. Bottom line, don’t rush James. If you can’t do it once a month, that’s ok. People can wait. Do it when you have the time available and I think it will benefit everyone. I hope no one is offended by this because that was not my intention. I just wanted to clarify my opinion and bring it to people’s attention that working through the holidays is a bitch.

    The game wasnt as hard/frustating as silver surfer. i played it once and i found it entertaining and fun. Thats another fact, while silver surfer was just like trying to drive a car whithout brakes.

    I don’t know how you keep up the pace of production while still keeping the quality of your work up. I work full-time in production and have trouble imagining how you do it all.

    Its kinda weird. This almost felt like it wasn’t AVGN. With most games you could make them sound fucking god awful even if they were good. This video made it feel like the game wasn’t even that bad. Like you were trying to come up with reasons for the game being terrible but it just wasn’t that bad. Maybe a poor choice in games to review? Or perhaps you simply weren’t in a good (bad?) enough mood for the filming. It felt kinda toned down.

    I’m not sure if what I am saying makes sense or if it was even anyone else thought as well. But something was amiss about this episode.

    What kind of idea was that for a game? A kid goes to sachool and day dreams. To top that off it only goes to 3 day dream settings.
    The story obviously sucks as it is just about a kid in school and from the review I can see the controls and gameplay sucked as well.
    Another thing that I find sort of stupid about the game was when he was getting the advice from the statue in the Roman setting. It is his daydream, the statue is in his head. Why the hell should he need to get advice from something that is part of his imagination therefore cannot know anything that he doesn’t already?

    This was one of my favorite games back in the day. It’s funny how when you’re younger, you never think about how ridiculous things are. The mythological parts were always my favorite. The “draw” parts were made easier by use of the Zapper.

    I’ve been reading some comments about this episode being some poster’s least favorite, and I just wanted to let you know I enjoyed this episode.

    I didn’t think it was “the worst ever.” It was fun, and made me laugh out loud a few times. I don’t need to see you screaming and cursing in every single episode. Sometimes these more lax episodes are great entertainment in their own right.

    All in all, I enjoyed the episode. Good work. :)

    I don’t know what to tell you James, except we all have our days where works’ a “grind”… I wish/hope you could have a break/vacation after such an intense Christmas special (well done, Mike and James!) and the Blob documentary…

    I have no idea what your work sched. is like, or if there’s a contract, or what-not. I just hope you don’t grow tired or burnt out from the “Nerd”… I know eventually we all grow, and there’s far bigger things in your future, though. I’m just lamenting the day it’s all over.

    I had this game when I was a kid. My mom bought it for me (I guess I daydreamed a lot and she said it reminded her of me). Anyways, once I figured out how to play it, I thought it was a decent game, then I couldn’t get past the wild west the first time (I never figured out that you had to shoot the guys gun). Seriously, I explored that wild west stage until I probably stepped on every single freakin’ pixel in that stage, and all I had to do was shoot a gun.

    James, you saved me from having to figure out how actually beat this awful game, saving me the effort. It is a bad game, even though you basically just showed us how to beat it, instead of really showing how hard it is to beat.

    I don’t understand why some people are getting upset about this review.

    This video was about the games that are on the opposite end of the bad game spectrum in comparison to the Nerd’s usual, piss-you-off-this-is-unfair bad games: Boring games. This game sure did look boring as Hell, and you could tell just how bored and how little entertained the Nerd was.

    Oh, and for the record, I’m pretty sure the Nerd would know what the whole River Styx things was about; he was just extremely bored and didn’t really care enough to put the effort into being correct.

    A lot of your videos on games trailer aren’t working. Actually, there aren’t even starting. I just can stay in front on my screen, waiting the “video loading” message to disappear. I tried on other PCs, with linux, windows, reinstalling flash everywhere…, isn’t streaming supposed to be easy as shit ? … it’s the same everywhere. Some videos are working fine, but just a few, it’s weird and frustrating…. Asking if I know what bullshit is ? Of course, game trailers IS bullshit. I can also do it in french, I will be more accurate : game trailers is a putain de grosse chiasse de tantouse trop enculée par tous les fils de trav à la bite suintant le furoncle percé dans sa bouche de sale suceuse de tuyau d’arrosages en rut, orphelines de mado la grosse pute qui racle sa chatte pourrie sur toutes les lignes droites de toutes les routes du coin jusqu’au pus.     I enjoyed it. Maybe a litle lax on the true ‘ohmygodthismakesmewanttodie’ sort of commens the Nerd is so good at, but I do like when he really looks at a whole game and nitpicks the stupid decisions. So much better than when the game used to get very little screen-time and the video featured more acting etc (though that is fun in small doses on occasion!)

    Besides all of the AVGN that james does, he is also working on a TON of other films at the SAME time. There should not be any negative comments towards his work because he’s doing it for our entertainment! If you want to see some other good stuff, just click around his cinemassacre site and you’ll find some fantastic reviews, and you especially need to check out his monster madness section!

    I was lucky enough to meet James at Digital press last month and there were so many people there that the police came for crowd control. Now thats a big fan following!

I just got my new AC adapter in the mail because of the cat chewing up the old one, so I’m anxious to get back into playing NES, especially since I just got Jurassic Park! :D

    great episode. i prefer these types of episodes where the entire episode is game play and commentary. i first got interested in AVGN because of the nostalgia of playing nintendo as a kid. but when i see episodes like this i start to get nostalgic of watching AVGN from a few years ago. thanks, great work!!!!

    Sure the review was a bit toned down concerning the “anger-level” and it seems like “The Nerd” didn´t get that frustrated by the game as he did from others, but come on, give James a break.

    I can understand that it is a LOT easier to get in the “anger mood” when you´re playing a game that really frustrated you when you were a child instead of picking one up nowadays.

    Keeping this in mind plus the fact that all the holidays were in between, he did a good job.

    James, i was once more very well entertained. Loved the part with the hooker and your edits with the ripped out spine and the F.Krueger reference.

    The dueling is a lot like in Red Dead. Also the sound fx and some music is recycled from Robin Hood.

    I dunno it felt like this one was missing something. Not bad by a long shot, I think the problem was that the game didnt look that bad apart from terrible story and the flaws pointed out. Looking forward to the next review.

    Awesome video! Its ancient greece, not rome, but I’m sure you know that anyway since you talked about medusa, the three headed dog, aphrodite (however I think that chick was athena) and the hades underworld. Whatever.

    Funny video, it does feel classic like the older ones. Its also worth mentioning that just before I came here, I realized “wait, isn’t it january, a new month? Maybe new AVGN? Nah, we got the christmas one not long ago at all…” and so I checked anyway, even though I was on the site earlier today. Lo and behold, the new video is up! I could hardly believe it. Pleasant surprise.

    Hey, thanks for reviewing this game. When I was a kid I remember reading a walkthrough of this game in Nintendo Power, but never actually played it. Now I got to see what it’s like!

    By the way, you haven’t heard of Charon, or the River Styx, or the fact that you need a coin to cross the river? This is all classic Greek mythology! Where’s your literary savvy? At least you recognized Cerberus and the cyclops.

    You’re right, but this video is nothing like the very first one. Unlike this episode, he actually seems legitimately angry in the first one. I think part of the reason why some people comment on the lack of swearing or yelling is because that is a huge part of what sells the Nerd’s anger. I understand what this video was going for, and it sells the mediocrity of the game very well. I just don’t think it works as an AVGN video. AVGN should be angry. Not sleepy and bored.

    Assuming what I saw in the video was the worst the game had to offer, I don’t think that this game was a good choice. Overall, the game look fairly average and a bit too playable. Nothing I saw that made me think the game was insanely difficult, nor did it look frustratingly bad or overly glitched. There were only a few parts of the game that were pointed out that I thought were a little ridiculous or out of the ordinary. Mediocre was the perfect word to choose in describing it.

    I’m not saying this is a bad video. I just don’t think it’s a good AVGN video. Anyways, I’ve been a huge Cinemassacre fan for several years and really appreciate the work you guys put into this site.

    I really don’t get all the “OMG AVGN IS GOING DOWNHILL FAST” talk. This wasn’t a great episode, but it was by no means terrible. The only AVGN episode I’d even call terrible would be the Deadly Towers episode, not because of James and co., but because user comments are never as funny as the author thinks they are. As for the 100th episode, I really hope it isn’t E.T. Granted that it was a terrible game, but there’s not really much that can be said about it. Plus I think it’s funnier as a running gag rather than a legitimate review. Anyway, keep up the great work, guys.

    It seems like a lot of James’ “fans” are 12 year olds who get pissy if every episode doesn’t have the Nerd screaming at the top of his lungs of beating the shit out of Bugs Bunny. personally, I LIKE that James is maturing and not sticking with the same thing every time. I really couldn’t care less about the “anger level” or the amount of cussing.I find your videos entertaining for reasons other than you just saying “ass’ a lot. Keep up the great work, guys, I’ll be here for episode 100. :)

    The video reminds me of his earlier reviews, just go back and watch ones like the Sega CD review, he is much more laid back in videos like those, and last I saw there isn’t any rule that James has to go absolutely bat **** ballistic on every single game he plays.

    As long as it’s funny I don’t care.

    Hey James, I never really give my two cents about your videos and what I think of them. I see a few people on here weren’t too happy about this particular video, and I understand that because you’ve made some great videos that could be tough to top. Honestly though, I’m just happy I get a video a month. Even if it isn’t your best quality, I know you’re at least trying to make everyone happy and meet a certain deadline. I don’t think Day Dreamin’ Davey was as funny because there wasn’t as much to work with. One of my favorite episodes is your Halloween episode where you took a really boring game that had nothing to work with, even less than Davey, but made it more interesting by having Michael Myers come after you, using references from the movie, etc. Maybe a better example would be your Ninja Gaiden episode. I don’t think that episode would have been AS GOOD without the ninja. He complimented the episode well. Perhaps there needs to be more guest character appearances? Also, like one of the previous comments mentioned that you weren’t as “angry” or pissed off I guess. I think that’s because the game was bad, but it didn’t literally drive you up the wall like Silver Surfer probably did. Even if the jokes are lacking, the seriousness in your face when you’re pissed off about a tedious game is what’s really funny. Something I can relate to playing a bad game. Sorry this is long, I thought id share. I guess the bottom line is keep the “Angry” in AVGN, and once again, I’m happy with every video, it really takes some stress off my life even for 15 minutes. Thanks a lot James and good luck.

    In the intro I’ve seen a reference to Atari’s ET. And this is the 98th episode. And ET is one of the most antecipated episodes. James has done little spoofs on his intros since always but lately i haven’t noticed any reference to ET, only now.

    Think whatever you like and use your own head.

    I love how different this episode is. Rather than being super angry, the Nerd is just bored by the game. The game is frustrating because of how tedious and dull it is. I’ve played the game before, and I know what he went through playing this. It’s like McKids: it looks fun, but it sure gets boring very quick.

    I’m not interested in the anger levels either. But the Nerd is being sort of angry in this video, similar to the anger level from the second season, but he’s mixing it with sheer tiredness brought on by a boring game. The game wasn’t a bad choice of review either. This series is about going back to the past to play shitty games that suck ass? Well, doesn’t being tired out by a boring-ass game make the game a shitty game that sucks ass? I’d say so.

    Many fans of this show are missing the point and becoming angry nerds themselves. Their perception of anger is constant shouting and swearing, but the show can be funny and entertaining without that. Look at Swordquest, for example. There is only one single swear in that episode, and the Nerd wasn’t really angry either, but everyone liked it. It’s not about the fact that the games were part of a spectacular competition, the principle remains the same, nobody needs to scream and swear to be funny. You can till be angry by being bored and quiet, and that’s what the Nerd was doing here. Nothing was missing from this episode at all; all the anger elements are there, but delivered differently. The only reason that some fans fail to notice them is because they’re not looking hard enough; they expect the traditional methods and don’t expect change.

    This is James Rolfe’s sixth season of the Angry Video Game Nerd. Change needs to come into play, or the show is going to become dull. It can’t be the same all the time, because fans will start saying that the videos are becoming repetitive. I like change, because even when James makes changes, it doesn’t mean they’re staying like that forever. The reaction to the Christmas special was unfair and ridiculous. People were acting as if that was the new format of AVGN, and that it was just a one off Christmas Special. Nobody had a problem with Christmas Carol, so what was wrong with the Grinch. If people don’t know what the Grinch is, they can look it up. They’re using the internet to complain about the episode anyway. I loved that Christmas special, and I hope he’ll do another one like that in the future.

    There’s nothing wrong with constructive criticism, but yelling at James and swearing at him isn’t going to help, because he probably won’t even read those messages. Besides, if you had a show of your own, and a fan started swearing and blinding at you, demanding changes to your show to satisfy their expectations, would you listen to them? No, you’d delete the comments or block the user. But if somebody was honest and wasn’t acting like a jerk, then you might be listened to. James does consider and read messages whenever he can, but if you want to give constructive criticism, have some respect and dignity by giving it properly, not with foul language.

    As for me, my only request to James is that ET is not the 100th episode. It seems to me that that game should be part of the movie, and the whole idea behind that review could be a big piece of the plot, on how the Nerd feels about doing it before even touching it. We get enough references of that in the show’s intros.

    Now I’m sorry about this enormous post, but I wanted to have my say on the subject of those out of control fanbrats, and hopefully some of them will read this and begin to understand the differences in James’ styles.

    I thought this episode was…okay. It’s not that I miss all the cussing– I don’t, in fact I like that James isn’t relying on that now. I just felt like this review lacked energy. Ironic, considering the game? It would’ve been great if there was even a brief skit after the Nerd nodded off, but that was just the end. It wasn’t bad, I’d just like to see a little more…yeah, energy, in the next one.

    I loved this episode and I loved the little ET reference at the start. I don’t mind waiting for an ET review.

    But… I AM getting impatient waiting to see mike and guitar guy again! They haven’t appeared in an avgn episode since bugs bunny’s crazy castle in 2009.

    It’s nice seeing mike in board james and other videos, but guitar guy seems to have just vanished. What happened to him?

    @VGRetro : I agree with most of what you say, it doesn’t have to have swearing to be funny. But then again, I actually find the AVGN series more interesting than I do funny. I like looking at all the old video game systems like the pong machines and the commodore 64, I found the history behind Sword Quest very interesting and the Odyssey looked pretty cool. I still think he should review ET though, we’ve all been waiting for him to review it for a long time.

    James you’re losing it with these later vids. you had it right when you didn’t actually play into the game that far. most of your audience never played these games and don’t really care about them. when you just be yourself and have fun with it the vids are great. theres a million video game reviewers but people like you because your style is unique. don’t comprimise your humour to be detailed and accurate.

    I appreciate AVGN. His early stuff was fascinating and spot on and being 33 I could relate to every thing he said, playing games like top gun and castlevania myself when i was young. I dare say though He REALLY seems to be losing his edge. ( grinch tribute video? how mainstream) His stuff isnt funny or edgy anymore and the humor seems to be a bit forced. IMO he should stick with what made him a internet phenom and focus only on AVGN vids. I understand hes not into it anymore and support any direction he decides to go, having said that I really think the whole nerd-movie-is-getting-me-into-hollywood is a pipe dream. hes just a fanboy like the rest of us. Myself i use to draw ashcan comic books tributed to horror movies 12 years ago. Never went anywhere. Good luck james!

    This episode is not the best but still good, is just like everyone say…the episode is too calm. I know and we know James have done alot other stuff besides the avgn episodes and maybe he sometimes do calm episodes because he doesnt want to suffer a burnout or something, but he always do something to keep the avgn alive. Maybe an idea for this episode is that the avgn go to sleep and dream being in a adventure or something based on the shity game. Well…Good episode and good luck James! :D

    James you’re doing great! Don’t be ashamed if you’ve made a couple weak episodes. It happens to many talented people including filmmakers. It’s understandable that you’ve been busy with many things. I thought that you’re “How The Nerd Stole Christmas” special was fantastic. This episode is pretty good as well, and your Lester the Unlikely review was alright, could of been better, but I know you were cooking up that Christmas special, and you’re also working on the movie which I hope works out for you. Keep doing what you’re doing James and I hope you make it far.

    If anyone asks me, I think James as the “Nerd” is doing just fine. I mean, yes there are pleanty of episodes where he was just straight up angry about a game and expresses why. But Iam rather ok with how hes doing his videos atm. For me, its more of a contempory preformance which expresses more reason behind the madness. Id like to know more reasons behind why a game is no good then see a long drawn-out rage fest.
    - To James defense, I will say that he is certainly creative, and that revisiting Dr. Jekell Mr. Hyde was rather…Brave if you want to call it that, On that , somethings, are just un-arguebly bad. its like he said in that video. he could of taken a shit on that game but it wouldent of mattered.

    Lets see, a bad NES game I remember….Well I grew up with Legecy Of the Wizard. and Looking back on it through YouTube Clips. I relize why I was having difficulty with it. I never beat it, and as far as I remember, the Password System in game never seemed to work.

    I thought this review was funny, and the reason for it not being “on edge” or “too calm” is intentional because the game is about day dreaming which is associated with slothness or being just being bored which is a horrible theme for a video game, and I think that was the point James wanted to point out subliminally.

    I think you are making an excellent point. I think that since James always been in to movies he has always wanted to make a real full length feature. A movie cost a shitload of movie and even with sponsors he would have to take a lot out of his own pocket. Sure he probably makes a shitload of money from this site, but enough to finance a movie? I don’t know. If it flops that’s not good. Especially since his latest episodes isn’t very good.

    Worst case scenario would be a bad nerd movie followed by a bad comeback as the nerd in episodes. Who knows…

    Keep up your hard work, James, and I know it’s probably been hard for you to focus a lot on single projects (if you’re anything like me, that is). My boyfriend and I both love your videos and watch them all the time and laugh our asses off, and we think you’re awesome. I know people who think you “burnt out” still think you’re great, so to those who don’t think that, try not to judge those people– they’ve been watching these a long time, and even the slightest change can affect the most fickle of fanbases, but I can tell that those who criticize still love the nerd quite a bit and try hard not to offend him.

    Like I said, keep up the hard work, and fans, keep on watchin’. I know we always will.

    ahm, I am sorry, but this episode really sucks. I mean, the he does not present the game in any way being bad. It is just a game being a game and he is talking about it. There is no being bad, being good, it is just a normal game being played without any kind of real critisism or else. I do not see any point in this particular review and seriously, it just sucks. I am sorry, I really enjoy most of the AVGN’s review, but this is a freaking letdown without any serious foundation to a good funny storyline (i know, sounds kind of paradox). But you know, that is like my opinion, man (those who get the hint, congratulations).

    Not a bad video, but one thing came to mind while watching it.

    One of the levels you said to be aincent Rome is actually aincent Greece.
    The whole Mythology proves it (Medusa, Hades-the mythological land of the dead, the Cyclops, the boat rider and the coin etc.)
    Not a big mistake, but worth pointing out.

    Hey this game doesn’t actually look to bad compared to other games I’ve played on the NES. There may only be 3 scenes but you do get to play multiple situations in those scenes by going back and forth. Still I’ll have to give this game a try sometime. Until your review James I never even knew about this game. Thanks again for the review and keep up the great work! :)

    I think this review is meant to have more of a slow, dreary tone – it’s intentional because of the nature of the game being reviewed. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out as well as the other videos but it’s still definitely entertaining

    Didn’t really seem like a bad game. It seemed to have a lot of the elements of classic good games. Just… mediocre, as you said. And a lot of that stuff was really troublesome to do, and probably not worth most people’s time. Still, I enjoyed the video! Looking forward to the next!

    Great vid sir, long time fan and the material never gets old. However I can’t speak for the wife, not that she’s dislikes the videos it’s more of the fact that I always play them and the intro theme gets stuck in her head.     Not to nit pick, I love AVGN over all there are just a few things in this ep that drive me up the wall. For starters, if ur gonna say rome, don’t suggest Greek Gods. If it was rome, then ur suggestion should’ve been Venus, not Aphrodite. And To further that, What the fuck is the goddess of love, beuaty, and sexuality giving u tips for. Its probably Athena, or Minerva, but I’m pretty sure thats Greece not Rome. Second. Medusa, is a Gorgon. It bugged me in Castlevania, but I resisted commenting. Medusa is a famous Gorgon. Not a creature all to itself. And as for the Ferryman, he’s a cheap fuck who is willing to take a bribe to ferry you across the River Styx into the Underworld. Now u may know all of this, but the ignorance that’s suggested in ur video just begs for a kick in the skull.

    I really like the title card for this episode. With the title inside the dream bubble, it looks like a panel from comic. And I feel it’s very well done, the technic, the pose… traditionally inked illustrations just makes me happy, I guess he :)

    I truly loled at Davey decapitating the teacher (that would have been awesome :P ). I liked the mention of Sunset Riders, it reminded me of how much I used to love that game.

    Funny, the Nerd is wearing a long-sleeved shirt under his white pressed shirt… which is completely irrelevant, but I dunno, I can’t help but notice it.

    Good episode.

    I know James won’t ever read this but, figured I’d comment anyways. I’ve watched all the videos for years. Seen all 106 episodes multiple times. James has helped me through a lot.  Anyways, thought I’d correct one part here. I realize that he may have already known this, since James is actually really smart but, w/e, in case. The skeleton on the boat in hell, with the coin; that’s actually not weird or random at all. In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman who takes the souls who’ve gone to hell, across the river Styx. The coin is payment. That’s why many people around the word still place a gold coin under the tongue of the dead, as payment for Charon. Again, I know James might have already known that and it was just a joke as part of the review, but..little history for ya. Hope the AVGN movie is going well.  I have to admit I can’t wait for the episodes to come back though.
