I think I personally rather would have fallen asleep with Davey than actually managed to finish this game.
But hey – Great work ! And it’s the first AVGN episode of 2011. Can’t wait for the rest !
I had posted on here that he should review this game months ago. I hope that I somehow inspired him to look at it and do a review.
It’s honestly horrible. I could never get past the first damn screen where those rocks(bushes?)that look like an arrow. I guess I never really tried that hard because after playing it for that long I knew it was horrible.
Keep ‘em coming James! And I must say, I still miss more then one video a month. I hope your DvDs don’t come with just 12 episodes. That would suck. Loved the review, and almost to 100. Are we in for a E.T. ……..I mean a treat?? Great work on the Dragon Dream movie. Great stuff also.
Decent review, but it seemed very lacking in the typical quality we’ve come to expect from you. I really don’t get why you didn’t wear a long sleeve shirt to cover up your thermal underwear. I just found that odd, like you just threw this episode together on the fly and didn’t care about all the little details like you had before. You just didn’t seem to give much effort into being the “Nerd”. Felt like I was watching James doing the review looking like the “Nerd”. I know that sounds odd, but I don’t see the “Nerd’ and James as the same thing. I see the “Nerd” as a character, not a person like I do James. Sorry, I usually don’t complain about AVGN episodes, but that was most definitely not your best. I thought the whole point of doing one video a month was to make better videos. It just seems to me like you’re loosing creative interest in your work. I can understand that, I mean you’ve been making these for about 6 years now, doing the same thing over and over again does take it’s toll. Maybe you should take a few months off from doing the Nerd. Go on a vacation with the wife so you can re-energize your creative juices. I’m sorry if I sound like a jerk, I’m not meaning to. I just thought something didn’t seem right and needed to be said.
2011 is off to a glorious start James. I look forward to further ass kickery. One more review, then on to E.T. in March right?! …(unless it’s been written into the AVGN movie script already)
great as always sir, but i have to admit it wasnt the actuall episode that made me happy. in the intro i noticed you grab a vhs tape for the actionmax. before i had an nes i had the actionmax. and i still remember long after the system broke, being young and just watching the rescue of pops ghostly, as well as…i think it was sonic flury…where your a space pilot and it starts with you and like 1 or 2 team members basically going into “morphing time” and comeing out looking like jesse ventura in the running man, with the cheesy armor. and the rest of the game was basically anime backgrounds as you shot down robots and other flyers. any way, i just wanted to thank you for reminding me of a long forgotten but still cherished childhood memory. thank you james…err…Mr.Nerd
That Could be one of the most epic beginnings to a game i have ever witnessed, oh truly this will be a classic for the nerd!! each month i patiently wait like i did as a child for a new episode of my favorite shows! and time after time the quality is getting more perfected! but seriously…you had a really good thing goin on with Board James!! the people love it we demand it! hahaha i just wanna thank you also for introducing me to Nostalgia Critic! its the same type of humor but dif genre!
keep it up dude! just keep given’er!
Movie Recommendation: Fubar
Very Similar to -American Movie.-
i must agree with “twisted speech”
since the last few months you have a bigger interest in movies than games
i mainly come here for the games-stuff
maybe you should try out something new? like the next generation games?
or some good games? i wonder if the nerd without ranting would work
about the game: didnt play it but i playd sunset riders
i was anxiously awaiting this episode and when i saw it i watched it straight away! and i couldnt stop laughing through the whole thing, i love the line “you know what would be cool? if davey woke up and it was the teacher’s severed head!” classic
i agree with TwistedSpeech it just didn’t feel like an A.V.G.N . episode to me. I say you follow TwistedSpeech’s advice and take a vacation for a bit. Sometimes that’s all you need to get the creative juices flowing again. Oh and by the way i say if you’re tired and “Bored” bring some more bored James to the table. That or some more of your own films out. And here’s wishing you happy and prosperous 2011 Mr. Rolfe!
I enjoy that this game implements psychological elements to delineate the peripheries of the real and dream worlds. One example would be the reiteration of the word draw as Davy is being transported to the dream world. The word draw subliminally pits Davy in the wild west where one would “draw” in a duel. Also, the pencil is clearly a phallic representation of Davy’s inadequacies.
I don’t know about all of you guys, but the Nerd made me stop watching TV, almost 3 years ago, and made me watch his show. I became addicted to all sorts of reviews and rants and whatnots, checking those particular sites every day, several times.
Now, dear Mr. Rolfe, I couldn’t thank you enough for the fun and delight you have given me during this time but having said this, I have to ask you something. Are getting tired of your own show? Do you continue this, because it is mandatory and an obligation to rant about 20 year old control schemes and that pushing up for jumping isn’t that great of an idea?
If so, then I guess anybody of us cheapass viewer would understand whatever you would like to change in you concept. I don’t understand why you couldn’t review those games you obviously love passionately.
Honestly, you possess the power to share your delight for something so well, that you even made me watch godzilla movies. You love movies so much that you had to go down to movies like ‘Ricky 1′ to have something bad about them to say. I could go on forever, but to close things up:
If I had this basement, packed with all kind of games, it would really piss me off only to pop in the stinker.
Awesome as always, man! This episode had some oldschool nerd rage. Are you using a different microphone for the live audio? Sorry to be an A/V nerd. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to do for AVGN #100!!
I was guessing that you were gonna do Beauty and the Beast next since you ended your last one with that game, glad I was wrong. Never heard of this game but it sure looks like it could eat a bag of dicks to me. Nice one guys!
Sorry, but this is my least favorite AVGN episode. It really looked like James was very tired while making it. That made me sleepy too. I’ve never played the game and it acually looked pretty good or at least playable.
Stop making mediocre games reviews, James. Make something that means something for you so we could see your passion like in previuos eps.
I think/hope james will make E.T review as his 100 AVGN episode and for the 99th episode id like to see ” Ice Climber ” on snes maybe James and Mike dressed to 2 eskimo’s playing Ice Climber on 2 player and swearing and having fun? , and after that retire the nerd for a while and maybe come up with some Board James and newer game reviews? =)
I just wish that James had set release dates like Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic). I’m not saying one video a week, if it’s going to be one a month that’s fine I just wish James would pick a day of the month and stick to it so I don’t have to check the website randomly every now and then.
Some of you people are out of your damn minds. Sure, it’s your opinion that this episode wasn’t all that good, but for the life of me, I can’t see what you’re seeing.
I thought the episode was great. Not boring or dry or humorless. In fact, I laughed out loud at a few points (turd measuring and headless teacher, ftw).
If James seems burnt out to you, maybe it’s because you know how hard he works and how rarely he gets a break, so you put it upon him in your own head that he’s “burnt out.” Or maybe he is burnt out from providing hours and hours of free entertainment to everyone. Either way, he’s busting his ass and some folks need to be a little more appreciative of that fact.
was it me or where there scenes in the begining that are not in episodes?, i even saw the ET thing and other scenes i dont remember from any other episode, is this like scenes from episodes yet to come?
it actually didnt seem like that bad of a game, with that many levels for the NES it looked pretty fun but i would have to say after almost 100 episodes how many shitty games can their be left?
It’s true my first reaction is “whatever”, but mark my words the next time I see that video I am going to start laughing my ass off. You need to be in the right mindframe to enjoy things.
Of course, it does make sense that the Nerd isn’t in high spirits right now. I mean he most likely filmed this during the Christmas break, and really that should be enough of an indicator right there.
@TwistedSpeech
I know what you mean. It’s definitely not my best. I only had a few days to complete the whole video, in time for January. The holidays really kicked my ass. The next one should be better.
Great episode. Some people seem to expect a big production every episode. While those are fun, and it’s great to see them, they can’t be done every episode, and they’d probably get repetitive to make and to watch after doing them so many times. It’s nice to see “regular” episodes mixed in with the more action oriented ones. They’re more like your original episodes.
Great review! I really liked the new opening sequence…of course mainly because it had the skeleton flipping the bird which is my favorite bit out of all of your videos (Game Glitch Gremlin is a close second).
I remember hearing about this game back in the day but I never played it…and man I’m glad now that I never did. Did anyone else notice that the sword noises sounded exactly the same as in Robin Hood for the NES (also a crappy game)?
This game also reminded me of Time Lord a bit as well…which I’m pretty sure isn’t a good thing either. :0
Call of Duty as a seven year old…….hehe, yeah. now, a seven year old PLAYING C.O.D.? I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest.
These past few AVGN’s were funny, but I haven’t seen that much actual anger lately. not much screaming or outraged reactions at the ridiculous games, none of the old over reactions or angry analogies. maybe he’s saving up for episode 100. I’ve never really heard of this E.T. Atari thing, but it does seem to be extremely infamous among gamers. can’t wait.
I’d say the story reminded me of Calvin and Hobbes, where Calvin’s active imagination would take him to crazy paces, such as the adventures of Spaceman Spiff, but that would be doing injustice to the greatness of Calvin and Hobbes; because Calvin wasn’t some narcoleptic dumbass with such a limited imagination that he had the same dream like 5 different times. This game could have been interesting if he had fantasies related to whatever class he was in. Art class could have been the renaissance, the principal’s office could have been a prison or something, he could have had a space adventure during science class, you know, VARY it a little!
So I was looking at this television tropes and idioms website, and read a description of “unpleasable fanbase,” and thought about AVGN fans. First, they complain when James does something new and different like the Christmas special. Now, he does a more traditional, old school episode and… people complain.
Great episode James. It wasn’t a standout, but that’s fine. Not every episode can outshine the rest. And the Christmas special was a tough act to follow. I like how you went old school AVGN for this one.
Just some constructive criticism here. I love your vids and while some I like more than others, you do a great job.
- I really miss the intros you used to do before diving into the actual game. Lately some of them have been jarring at the beginning. I realize it’s more work for you, but it’s fun to see you bullshit for a couple minutes first like when you review a console or like in the Ninja Gaiden video.
- Again just personal opinion, but I don’t think it would be so bad to cash in on some of the obvious games/systems people want reviewed. Not all of them but something like the 3DO is begging to be reviewed. In short something people are a little more familiar with.
Yo,James!! Nice new AVGN Vid. Has some funny jokes:) I think you should reviewe Last action hero on SNES it is so shittttty,my pet won’t play this game:D
Hey James, i think it was good episode, what about making a review about Sega’s Outrun Franchise? and the shitty ports to the different consoles? I know it will be hard because the great outrun classics run on arcade machines, but the ports are very very shitty, maybe you can give it a try!!
And Happy New Year man!! I’m from Venezuela, you are really international!!
I appreciate your work James, been following you since the very beginning and i can fully understand if you dont have the time to deliver the quality entertainment we, the audience are used to.
Just remember you always have dedicated fans to support you from around the world.
@ TwistedSpeech
I’m genuinely surprised you actually told James your problems with his review without going, “dis reveew suks. u dint du shyt wit et. et sukz munkie fuk”.
But, yeah, this isn’t his best episode. In fact, I think it’s the worst he’s made since the beginning, but that doesn’t stop it from being utterly hilarious and entertaining. Besides, the poor bastard, like he said, had only 3 days to do this and he already looks tired as all hell. I’m with you on this, I really do think James is doing too much work. Take a vacation, dammit! Fuck your wife or something. There’s more important things in life than entertaining people you don’t really know for the most part and that would be “entertaining” your wife.
ok i wont say this episode was bad, but it wasnt that great either. sorry to say that this is my least favorite AVGN vid next to last months Christmas Special. (just my opinion) well James i saw your comment and i hope your right about next month.
I’m surprised there are so many “worst episode” comments about this one. It certainly was nothing special and definitely not the first vid I’d look to if I were trying to show off AVGN at his finest, but the worst he’s ever made?
Nah, I think some of the ones near the end of his “every other week” schedule were far more lacking (like Hydlide and Swordquest), for understandable reasons of course. And Lester the Unlikely much more underwhelming than this one. But we all have different opinions. Mine is that this one was one of the weaker AVGN episodes but far from the worst of them all.
I thought this episode was great! The game looks kinda fun, but the premise is friggin ridiculous. It looks pretty damn easy too. I’m guessing you aren’t a fan of sports games because I rarely ever see them in your vids. Might i suggest a marathon of shitty football games for superbowl February?
Loved the episode, but that’s not why I decided to comment. I’m incredibly surprised that of all the commenters only one noticed the GIGANTIC factual error: mistaking ancient Greece for ancient Rome in such an obvious setting was inexcusable and kind of thrown me out of the experience a little. Other than that as entertaining as always. Thanks!
The review wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either.
You can’t expect James to create an epic, instant-classic masterpiece once a month!
My rating: 3 1/2 shitpickles out of five. (on total entertainment meter, not compared to anything else from the Nerd)
Where did all the levels go? I mean look at Kirby, it is so action-packed, non-redundant animated backgrounds, flawless gameplay, almost no glitches (I once managed to fly below the world without dying but that works once in a hundred times and when you freeze an enemy as ice-Kirby and press select, the icecube becomes pink), inside gags (eg. the Gameboy level or the HAL Easter egg)…
And for those who critizise the Nerd by only saying “duuuh stupid episode” and such:
Happy Shut The Fuck Up!
Holy freaking crap! The teacher in the game looks almost exactly like Miss Wormwood from Calvin and Hobbes! The principal kinda looks like the pointy-hair boss from Dilbert too.
I liked the video. Sure it’s not on par with fighting Bugs Bunny or anything else that’s awesomely scripted like that, but I don’t think that there’s really anything you could do like that for this game. It’s just a bad and boring game.
Guys chill out, James is doing his very best and puts a lot of effort into each and every episode! If you guys keep bashing his vids, especially his Christmas special (which is one of my all time favorites), he might eventually stop making them… now, is that what you want?
Anger is just not there anymore. I think the problem is that you’re reviewing the games too much. Also, if I am correct, your video may be entirely scripted (?) to the point where you leave out a lot of spontaneous reactions. I miss the old avgn, always made me laugh to the point where tears ran down my face.
I really liked the Super Mario Bros 2 ending theme at the end of the episode. While this episode wasn’t as action packed as some of the others, I still found it to be very enjoyable to watch and I did learn about a game I have never played before. Stumbled upon this when I wasn’t expecting a new AVGN to be out for a while so it certainly brightened my day.
a few things. one: the enemy in the armor looked like Shredder. two: this episode was funny, a little light on the anger, but thats probably the whole point since the games about daydreaming, thats not supposed to involve anger. three: this is the first time ive noticed you wearing sleeves underneath the nerd shirt. overall: great shit
Fantastic, thank you James for posting a New Video, I have not stopped raving about the last one you did at Christmas, talk about WOW! Happy NEW Year, hope it goes with a BOOM!
I read all the comments saying it was crap, but I thought it was pretty good. If people don’t think he put a lot of effort into it, just imagine having to play and complete this horrible and confusing game.
Jktomasss said “Make something that means something for you so we could see your passion.”
I actually understand what he is saying in this comment. To me, this episode feels more like James is going by a script (yes I know it’s scripted) than he is being angry at the game. It’s like he just picked a random game he never played before and did a video on it. There was no real anger in this one. I know the AVGN is just a character but what got me hooked on this stuff was literally how frustrated James gets because I too get that frustrated with games, especially old ones (I’m James’s age). To me, and this is just my opinion so don’t freak out, a lot of the more recent episodes (with the exception of Jekyl and Hyde pt 2 vid) have lacked this type of anger/passion. Maybe its just me realizing that its more acting than it is James being himself. Maybe I’m reading too much into it. Either way, it’s just not the same as it used to be. I still love the AVGN and I’ll still keep watching every month. I just wanted to speak my mind because I feel like the series is getting weaker because of this. Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about (which is entirely possible) but this is just my opinion. I am by no means telling James what to do or how to run his work. I fully appreciate all the hard work and effort that goes into this. I’m still a fan and will always be one. I just hope the series go back to the days of Silver Surfer. Man, there is no other episode (in my opinion) funnier than that one. You can honestly feel the pain he goes through in that episode and it’s hilarious. That level of realism is what makes the AVGN so awesome. Either way, I still love the site and James does other things on here just as well as the AVGN so don’t take this as a complaint. Either way, keep up the good work James. Most of us appreciate it.
I just saw James’s comment on the previous page. For those of you who didn’t see it:
_______________
James says:
January 6, 2011 at 12:49 pm
@TwistedSpeech
I know what you mean. It’s definitely not my best. I only had a few days to complete the whole video, in time for January. The holidays really kicked my ass. The next one should be better.
_______________
When I wrote that post, I didn’t even think about the holiday and the toll that takes on people. I had to travel all over the damn place for 5 days to see family and friends and then add work to that and I completely understand why this episode isn’t on par with some of the older stuff. I apologize for not being more considerate of the time frame he had to do this vid in.
I do still stand by my post though. For the most part, the mediocre obscure games that James does (this one, Lester, etc) just don’t seem to have the same level of passion/anger that the older ones did. I think all of us would willingly wait longer for another “Silver Surfer” or “NES Accessories” episode than get Lester and Davey in a shorter time frame. To me, the games that you can tell that really piss James off tend to be the better episodes. The dialogue gets more creative, the cursing gets more explicit, and the skits are usually better. Bottom line, don’t rush James. If you can’t do it once a month, that’s ok. People can wait. Do it when you have the time available and I think it will benefit everyone. I hope no one is offended by this because that was not my intention. I just wanted to clarify my opinion and bring it to people’s attention that working through the holidays is a bitch.
Well I didn’t mean to imply that yelling = better. Although it does make me laugh more because I scream at video games all the time.
Again, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about and I’m certainly not trying to tell James how to do this stuff. I just wanted to share how it seemed to me. Today’s been a long day at work. I need a beer or 5.
Watching at James shirt i think he was sick at the moment he made the video… so maybe thats why he didnt get the traditional anger. Try to yell while ur cold. :p
The game wasnt as hard/frustating as silver surfer. i played it once and i found it entertaining and fun. Thats another fact, while silver surfer was just like trying to drive a car whithout brakes.
James, not sure if you will get a chance to read this. Just wanted to give you a word of encouragement from one video producer to another.
I don’t know how you keep up the pace of production while still keeping the quality of your work up. I work full-time in production and have trouble imagining how you do it all.
Try your hardest to ignore many of the critics that just speak out of ignorance. Your work is appreciated by many. Thanks!
And Mike, great job on the Christmas illustrations. They were amazing!
“Blob Town” got a good review from AllMediaNY! (Since I wrote it, that might not be a big deal, but whatever.) See if you agree with what it says: allmediany.com/details_article.php?art_id=414
Yeah you guys are right. Silver Surfer is one of the hardest fucking games I’ve ever played. Sorry to hear that James is sick. How do you people find this shit out? I mean besides Mike of course. I feel like a total shit now. Fuckballs…
I just assumed he was sick becouse he was wearing a long sleeve shirt under and he seems pale (more than usual). Its christmas time and maybe he wasnt sick at all… just wasted? XD
anw. ur right Mike… Day Dreamin was a bad game… but what to expect from Hal on the 80´s except kirby.
@ James: Thank you for your honesty. I understand about the holidays kicking ass and taking all your energy. I’ve had it happen to me. And I am glad I didn’t upset you because that wasn’t my intention in my original post at all. I care about your work. I think what you’ve been doing since 2004 has been awesome and something that I hope you always enjoy doing. And as I said, this was good, I did enjoy it,. It just felt to me as if you threw it together last minute, which you said you did do. So I will say this to you. Don’t overwork yourself. We, the fans, can wait. We’re not a bunch of whore mongers who are depraved and demand that you put out work on a rigid schedule. All we want is your absolute best every single time you put out your work. And if that means you taking a few months off to re-charge your soul and get them creative juices going again, then so be it. We can wait. Well enough from me. Take care of yourself, James.
hey James, thats a good kickstart for 2011! i love the part where you said wouldnt it be cool if he wakes up with the decapitated head of the teacher!!! hahaha!!! thats what makes avgn so great, i mean this kind of clever humor. keep up the good work, i love you man.
Hey James decent video but not great. Not many jokes or storyline to this review. Just a straight review this time. Its ok, but nothing special. I hope you have a really nuts one planned for #100.
Keep up the good work I know you have a ton on your plate and You still manage to pump out new vids month after month. Bravo for work ethic.
My favorite is still spiderman, You and Spiderman had great banter. It has a raw almost improv quality to it. It was hilarous. maybe try some things along these lines again.
I tell you what, why don’t you complainers try to record your own videos if you religiously whine about AVGN’s quality? I bet you couldn’t even match the worst of AVGN videos, and people will complain about yours. James requires many hours to invest in a 10+ minute video, and has an actual life behind Cinemassacre (my wild guess). This comments board is clogged with endless bitching it’s sickening. James cannot make everyone happy, and if you don’t like AVGN’s videos anymore, then go make your own. Plain and simple.
Its kinda weird. This almost felt like it wasn’t AVGN. With most games you could make them sound fucking god awful even if they were good. This video made it feel like the game wasn’t even that bad. Like you were trying to come up with reasons for the game being terrible but it just wasn’t that bad. Maybe a poor choice in games to review? Or perhaps you simply weren’t in a good (bad?) enough mood for the filming. It felt kinda toned down.
I’m not sure if what I am saying makes sense or if it was even anyone else thought as well. But something was amiss about this episode.
January 6, 2011 at 2:06 am
Yeah James, so stoked I stayed up this late. Fuck work !
January 6, 2011 at 2:10 am
I’ve been stayin up every night till 4 watching episodes I’ve missed over the years. This is definitely a treat!!! Cannot wait to watch!
April 4, 2013 at 12:37 am
I’ve been doing the same shit. Ah, your comment is from 2011. Why do I even bother? Heh.
January 6, 2011 at 2:16 am
Sweet…I am so glad I checked before I went to bed.
January 6, 2011 at 2:18 am
GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >=D!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 6, 2011 at 2:25 am
Fuck yes!!! I didn’t think it would actually come tonight. Awesome. Now to watch…
January 6, 2011 at 2:26 am
Awesome, Glad I late night binge.
January 6, 2011 at 2:30 am
I think I personally rather would have fallen asleep with Davey than actually managed to finish this game.
But hey – Great work ! And it’s the first AVGN episode of 2011. Can’t wait for the rest !
January 6, 2011 at 2:32 am
yes!! the month has not officially started without the brand new AVGN episode.
January 6, 2011 at 2:36 am
I had posted on here that he should review this game months ago. I hope that I somehow inspired him to look at it and do a review.
It’s honestly horrible. I could never get past the first damn screen where those rocks(bushes?)that look like an arrow. I guess I never really tried that hard because after playing it for that long I knew it was horrible.
January 6, 2011 at 2:38 am
Sweet. Happy New Year, James and Mike.
January 6, 2011 at 2:55 am
I knew this insomnia would pay off one day!
January 6, 2011 at 2:55 am
Interesting episode… I remember this game from Nintendo Power back in the day, but I’m not sure I’ve ever actually played it.
Please review Total Recall for the NES one day.
January 6, 2011 at 3:00 am
Keep ‘em coming James! And I must say, I still miss more then one video a month. I hope your DvDs don’t come with just 12 episodes. That would suck. Loved the review, and almost to 100. Are we in for a E.T. ……..I mean a treat?? Great work on the Dragon Dream movie. Great stuff also.
January 6, 2011 at 3:00 am
Nice, but when you say you did slash every tree for a coin… you find it in a begging. That means you didn’t touch like every tree…
January 6, 2011 at 3:03 am
Is that Action Max in the opening? You should review that.
January 6, 2011 at 3:04 am
Nice review, James! Love the ending… Sleepy Video Game Nerd?
January 6, 2011 at 3:06 am
interesting music.
I need to add it to the collection.
Maybe, someday it will help me with music, that i produce.
January 6, 2011 at 3:08 am
James saying “shitty game” for the 98th time isn’t getting tedious at all. Trying new material is out of the question, huh?
January 6, 2011 at 3:14 am
January 6, 2011 at 3:28 am
I miss some of the anger in the episodes lately I hope you can bring it back!
also the sarcastic comments and guest characters!
is not bad what you are doing but the old nerd is missing!
January 6, 2011 at 3:38 am
Thank you James, THE birthday present to get
January 6, 2011 at 3:43 am
2011 is off to a glorious start James. I look forward to further ass kickery. One more review, then on to E.T. in March right?!
…(unless it’s been written into the AVGN movie script already)
January 6, 2011 at 4:10 am
First! Oh wait…
ElvinKing:
Sweet…I am so glad I checked before I went to bed.
No kidding!

great as always sir, but i have to admit it wasnt the actuall episode that made me happy. in the intro i noticed you grab a vhs tape for the actionmax. before i had an nes i had the actionmax. and i still remember long after the system broke, being young and just watching the rescue of pops ghostly, as well as…i think it was sonic flury…where your a space pilot and it starts with you and like 1 or 2 team members basically going into “morphing time” and comeing out looking like jesse ventura in the running man, with the cheesy armor. and the rest of the game was basically anime backgrounds as you shot down robots and other flyers. any way, i just wanted to thank you for reminding me of a long forgotten but still cherished childhood memory. thank you james…err…Mr.Nerd
January 6, 2011 at 4:17 am
That Could be one of the most epic beginnings to a game i have ever witnessed, oh truly this will be a classic for the nerd!! each month i patiently wait like i did as a child for a new episode of my favorite shows! and time after time the quality is getting more perfected! but seriously…you had a really good thing goin on with Board James!! the people love it we demand it! hahaha i just wanna thank you also for introducing me to Nostalgia Critic! its the same type of humor but dif genre!
keep it up dude! just keep given’er!
Movie Recommendation: Fubar
Very Similar to -American Movie.-
January 6, 2011 at 4:23 am
i must agree with “twisted speech”
since the last few months you have a bigger interest in movies than games
i mainly come here for the games-stuff
maybe you should try out something new? like the next generation games?
or some good games? i wonder if the nerd without ranting would work
about the game: didnt play it but i playd sunset riders
January 6, 2011 at 4:27 am
excuse me it was captain power that had the bad ass anime flight sequences
January 6, 2011 at 4:28 am
That intro was epic! Great episode guys
January 6, 2011 at 5:43 am
Great review. Lots of lols now as well. xD
I wish we got to see your thoughts on the new Back to the Future: The game… game
January 6, 2011 at 5:46 am
That was fast! I thought that this review would be released on the end of this month!
January 6, 2011 at 6:39 am
Great Review. In February Can You Review One Of The Bad Sonic Games, Or Maybe Keith Courage On The TurboGrafx? Nobody Reaches My Requests Before.
January 6, 2011 at 6:40 am
i was anxiously awaiting this episode and when i saw it i watched it straight away! and i couldnt stop laughing through the whole thing, i love the line “you know what would be cool? if davey woke up and it was the teacher’s severed head!” classic
January 6, 2011 at 6:44 am
Cool review James. Loved the Mario 2 ending music while you fell asleep at the end…..R D R R!
January 6, 2011 at 7:04 am
i agree with TwistedSpeech it just didn’t feel like an A.V.G.N . episode to me.
Rolfe!
January 6, 2011 at 7:23 am
eheh nice episode James, it was a great start for AVGN in 2011!
January 6, 2011 at 7:33 am
AVGN, you are awesome!
I think the skeleton was supposed to be the grim reaper, but where the hell is the classic scythe?
January 6, 2011 at 7:43 am
Awesome review you rock AVGN keep up the good work and ill be sharing this with my friends on facebook and twitter
January 6, 2011 at 7:50 am
good job nice review and never trust hal
January 6, 2011 at 7:51 am
Damn I’m @ work ! I’m looking forward to see it !
January 6, 2011 at 8:10 am
Fantastic as always James. Both hilarious and a solid review.
January 6, 2011 at 8:48 am
I remember this. One of those disappointing rentals.
January 6, 2011 at 8:50 am
I enjoy that this game implements psychological elements to delineate the peripheries of the real and dream worlds. One example would be the reiteration of the word draw as Davy is being transported to the dream world. The word draw subliminally pits Davy in the wild west where one would “draw” in a duel. Also, the pencil is clearly a phallic representation of Davy’s inadequacies.
January 6, 2011 at 9:05 am
January 6, 2011 at 9:12 am
I bet the 99th episode next month will be something good, while the 100th in March will be something special!
Then again, all your videos are special!
January 6, 2011 at 9:20 am
lol @ Gorest – same here! too much on at work to stop and watch but I’m itching too press play.
January 6, 2011 at 9:37 am
Awesome as always, man! This episode had some oldschool nerd rage. Are you using a different microphone for the live audio? Sorry to be an A/V nerd. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to do for AVGN #100!!
January 6, 2011 at 9:41 am
Classic nerd video Love The AVGN MOVIES and James and Mike’s other movies.
January 6, 2011 at 9:46 am
I was guessing that you were gonna do Beauty and the Beast next since you ended your last one with that game, glad I was wrong. Never heard of this game but it sure looks like it could eat a bag of dicks to me. Nice one guys!
January 6, 2011 at 9:51 am
Sorry, but this is my least favorite AVGN episode. It really looked like James was very tired while making it. That made me sleepy too. I’ve never played the game and it acually looked pretty good or at least playable.
Stop making mediocre games reviews, James. Make something that means something for you so we could see your passion like in previuos eps.
January 6, 2011 at 9:55 am
Awesome
January 6, 2011 at 10:07 am
I think/hope james will make E.T review as his 100 AVGN episode and for the 99th episode id like to see ” Ice Climber ” on snes maybe James and Mike dressed to 2 eskimo’s playing Ice Climber on 2 player and swearing and having fun?
, and after that retire the nerd for a while and maybe come up with some Board James and newer game reviews? =)
Good luck james=)
January 6, 2011 at 10:31 am
Awesome show! Very enjoyable in all regards
January 6, 2011 at 10:35 am
I just wish that James had set release dates like Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic). I’m not saying one video a week, if it’s going to be one a month that’s fine I just wish James would pick a day of the month and stick to it so I don’t have to check the website randomly every now and then.
January 6, 2011 at 10:47 am
@ Optics
He does actually, it’s thefirst wednesday of each month.
January 6, 2011 at 10:47 am
Haha! Should have been called Day Dreamin’ ADD Davey. :>
Great Video, And I am SO looking forward to #100.
Cheers!
Lori
January 6, 2011 at 10:52 am
Oh James.. you really lost your funniness for me. This is the worst episode next to “Lester the Unlikely” and “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde 2″… >-<
January 6, 2011 at 11:00 am
I snickered maybe twice this whole episode….wasn’t that funny. The formula is getting stale.
January 6, 2011 at 11:37 am
January 6, 2011 at 11:54 am
was it me or where there scenes in the begining that are not in episodes?, i even saw the ET thing and other scenes i dont remember from any other episode, is this like scenes from episodes yet to come?
January 6, 2011 at 12:39 pm
it actually didnt seem like that bad of a game, with that many levels for the NES it looked pretty fun but i would have to say after almost 100 episodes how many shitty games can their be left?
January 6, 2011 at 12:40 pm
james i cant wait for the 100th episode!!!
January 6, 2011 at 12:42 pm
It’s true my first reaction is “whatever”, but mark my words the next time I see that video I am going to start laughing my ass off. You need to be in the right mindframe to enjoy things.
Of course, it does make sense that the Nerd isn’t in high spirits right now. I mean he most likely filmed this during the Christmas break, and really that should be enough of an indicator right there.
January 6, 2011 at 12:49 pm
@TwistedSpeech
I know what you mean. It’s definitely not my best. I only had a few days to complete the whole video, in time for January. The holidays really kicked my ass. The next one should be better.
January 6, 2011 at 12:56 pm
Great episode. Some people seem to expect a big production every episode. While those are fun, and it’s great to see them, they can’t be done every episode, and they’d probably get repetitive to make and to watch after doing them so many times. It’s nice to see “regular” episodes mixed in with the more action oriented ones. They’re more like your original episodes.
January 6, 2011 at 1:00 pm
Great review! I really liked the new opening sequence…of course mainly because it had the skeleton flipping the bird which is my favorite bit out of all of your videos (Game Glitch Gremlin is a close second).
I remember hearing about this game back in the day but I never played it…and man I’m glad now that I never did. Did anyone else notice that the sword noises sounded exactly the same as in Robin Hood for the NES (also a crappy game)?
This game also reminded me of Time Lord a bit as well…which I’m pretty sure isn’t a good thing either. :0
January 6, 2011 at 1:03 pm
Call of Duty as a seven year old…….hehe, yeah. now, a seven year old PLAYING C.O.D.? I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest.
These past few AVGN’s were funny, but I haven’t seen that much actual anger lately. not much screaming or outraged reactions at the ridiculous games, none of the old over reactions or angry analogies. maybe he’s saving up for episode 100. I’ve never really heard of this E.T. Atari thing, but it does seem to be extremely infamous among gamers. can’t wait.
January 6, 2011 at 1:03 pm
January 6, 2011 at 1:07 pm
So I was looking at this television tropes and idioms website, and read a description of “unpleasable fanbase,” and thought about AVGN fans. First, they complain when James does something new and different like the Christmas special. Now, he does a more traditional, old school episode and… people complain.
Great episode James. It wasn’t a standout, but that’s fine. Not every episode can outshine the rest. And the Christmas special was a tough act to follow. I like how you went old school AVGN for this one.
January 6, 2011 at 1:18 pm
January 6, 2011 at 1:38 pm
Yo,James!! Nice new AVGN Vid. Has some funny jokes:) I think you should reviewe Last action hero on SNES it is so shittttty,my pet won’t play this game:D
January 6, 2011 at 1:49 pm
Hey James, i think it was good episode, what about making a review about Sega’s Outrun Franchise? and the shitty ports to the different consoles? I know it will be hard because the great outrun classics run on arcade machines, but the ports are very very shitty, maybe you can give it a try!!
And Happy New Year man!! I’m from Venezuela, you are really international!!
January 6, 2011 at 1:53 pm
@James
I appreciate your work James, been following you since the very beginning and i can fully understand if you dont have the time to deliver the quality entertainment we, the audience are used to.
Just remember you always have dedicated fans to support you from around the world.
Greeting from denmark
January 6, 2011 at 2:04 pm
January 6, 2011 at 2:04 pm
I love how people are telling James how to make HIS episodes better and that THEY are disappointed by this episode.
One guy said, “Make something that means something for you so we could see your passion.”
What the fuck? Jktomasss should change his name to Jktodumbasss
haha what a fucking tool!
January 6, 2011 at 2:07 pm
@Jktomasss LOOK AT THE TITLE
January 6, 2011 at 2:09 pm
ok i wont say this episode was bad, but it wasnt that great either. sorry to say that this is my least favorite AVGN vid next to last months Christmas Special. (just my opinion) well James i saw your comment and i hope your right about next month.
January 6, 2011 at 2:24 pm
Guys that don’t like it shut up….I have a feeling episode 100 might be ET…
January 6, 2011 at 2:28 pm
Would love to see R.O.B. and Gyromite! My R.O.B. broke after some time, but I can remember that the game was impossible with the robot!
January 6, 2011 at 2:30 pm
I’m surprised there are so many “worst episode” comments about this one. It certainly was nothing special and definitely not the first vid I’d look to if I were trying to show off AVGN at his finest, but the worst he’s ever made?
Nah, I think some of the ones near the end of his “every other week” schedule were far more lacking (like Hydlide and Swordquest), for understandable reasons of course. And Lester the Unlikely much more underwhelming than this one. But we all have different opinions. Mine is that this one was one of the weaker AVGN episodes but far from the worst of them all.
January 6, 2011 at 2:34 pm
I thought this episode was great! The game looks kinda fun, but the premise is friggin ridiculous. It looks pretty damn easy too. I’m guessing you aren’t a fan of sports games because I rarely ever see them in your vids. Might i suggest a marathon of shitty football games for superbowl February?
January 6, 2011 at 2:36 pm
Loved the episode, but that’s not why I decided to comment. I’m incredibly surprised that of all the commenters only one noticed the GIGANTIC factual error: mistaking ancient Greece for ancient Rome in such an obvious setting was inexcusable and kind of thrown me out of the experience a little. Other than that as entertaining as always. Thanks!
January 6, 2011 at 2:41 pm
January 6, 2011 at 2:57 pm
Hmm… you keep referring to it as ancient Rome, and yet the mythological names you use are all Greek. …Just saying.
January 6, 2011 at 3:07 pm
Holy freaking crap! The teacher in the game looks almost exactly like Miss Wormwood from Calvin and Hobbes! The principal kinda looks like the pointy-hair boss from Dilbert too.
I liked the video. Sure it’s not on par with fighting Bugs Bunny or anything else that’s awesomely scripted like that, but I don’t think that there’s really anything you could do like that for this game. It’s just a bad and boring game.
January 6, 2011 at 3:16 pm
Guys chill out, James is doing his very best and puts a lot of effort into each and every episode! If you guys keep bashing his vids, especially his Christmas special (which is one of my all time favorites), he might eventually stop making them… now, is that what you want?
January 6, 2011 at 3:20 pm
Anger is just not there anymore. I think the problem is that you’re reviewing the games too much. Also, if I am correct, your video may be entirely scripted (?) to the point where you leave out a lot of spontaneous reactions. I miss the old avgn, always made me laugh to the point where tears ran down my face.
January 6, 2011 at 3:43 pm
I really liked the Super Mario Bros 2 ending theme at the end of the episode. While this episode wasn’t as action packed as some of the others, I still found it to be very enjoyable to watch and I did learn about a game I have never played before. Stumbled upon this when I wasn’t expecting a new AVGN to be out for a while so it certainly brightened my day.
Thanks,
Fox
January 6, 2011 at 3:44 pm
The Adventures of Narcoleptic Davey. Haha! Good episode, very thorough
You left no shit rock unturned.
January 6, 2011 at 3:50 pm
Yeah that game looks like ass. Why the fuck did you need a shotgun to kill the turd burglars? what, getting shot 99 times with a pistol isn’t enough?
Great review, hope to see more soon.
January 6, 2011 at 3:51 pm
a few things. one: the enemy in the armor looked like Shredder. two: this episode was funny, a little light on the anger, but thats probably the whole point since the games about daydreaming, thats not supposed to involve anger. three: this is the first time ive noticed you wearing sleeves underneath the nerd shirt. overall: great shit
January 6, 2011 at 3:53 pm
Fantastic, thank you James for posting a New Video, I have not stopped raving about the last one you did at Christmas, talk about WOW! Happy NEW Year, hope it goes with a BOOM!
http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/retro/Index.php?ref=65348
January 6, 2011 at 3:54 pm
I read all the comments saying it was crap, but I thought it was pretty good. If people don’t think he put a lot of effort into it, just imagine having to play and complete this horrible and confusing game.
January 6, 2011 at 4:02 pm
January 6, 2011 at 4:18 pm
I just saw James’s comment on the previous page. For those of you who didn’t see it:
_______________
James says:
January 6, 2011 at 12:49 pm
@TwistedSpeech
January 6, 2011 at 4:38 pm
I don’t know what everyone else is talking about James I thought it was funny. Fuck the rest of these clowns who don’t like it.
January 6, 2011 at 4:51 pm
Well I didn’t mean to imply that yelling = better. Although it does make me laugh more because I scream at video games all the time.
Again, maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about and I’m certainly not trying to tell James how to do this stuff. I just wanted to share how it seemed to me. Today’s been a long day at work. I need a beer or 5.
January 6, 2011 at 4:55 pm
Nice video.
Keep the god damn great job James.
January 6, 2011 at 4:55 pm
James, not sure if you will get a chance to read this. Just wanted to give you a word of encouragement from one video producer to another.
I don’t know how you keep up the pace of production while still keeping the quality of your work up. I work full-time in production and have trouble imagining how you do it all.
Try your hardest to ignore many of the critics that just speak out of ignorance. Your work is appreciated by many. Thanks!
And Mike, great job on the Christmas illustrations. They were amazing!
January 6, 2011 at 4:56 pm
“Blob Town” got a good review from AllMediaNY! (Since I wrote it, that might not be a big deal, but whatever.) See if you agree with what it says: allmediany.com/details_article.php?art_id=414
January 6, 2011 at 4:57 pm
1:54- At least this game is a hair better than “Lester the Unlikely,” but THAT’S not sayin’ much.
3:38- Or “Dr. Who.”
5:27- DuckTits. WOOOOOOOoooooooo.
10:42- That is SO funny.
January 6, 2011 at 5:01 pm
Hiya, can anyone tell me what game that music at the end was from? It is driving me nuts because I know it, but can’t put my finger on it.
January 6, 2011 at 5:03 pm
Yeah you guys are right. Silver Surfer is one of the hardest fucking games I’ve ever played. Sorry to hear that James is sick. How do you people find this shit out? I mean besides Mike of course. I feel like a total shit now. Fuckballs…
January 6, 2011 at 5:06 pm
is it me or does the teacher look like Mrs. Wormwood from Calvin and Hobbes?
January 6, 2011 at 5:08 pm
Oh man she totally does!
January 6, 2011 at 5:09 pm
I just assumed he was sick becouse he was wearing a long sleeve shirt under and he seems pale (more than usual). Its christmas time and maybe he wasnt sick at all… just wasted? XD
anw. ur right Mike… Day Dreamin was a bad game… but what to expect from Hal on the 80´s except kirby.
January 6, 2011 at 5:10 pm
awesome episode!
January 6, 2011 at 5:14 pm
I really like this one, actually I like all of the AVGN video’s. Keep up the great work James.
January 6, 2011 at 5:24 pm
@dguzman
Nice article about Blob Town. I am sure James appreciates it.
January 6, 2011 at 5:31 pm
Yeahhh !! I was looking forward to see it !!! And It was worth it !!! Thanks james I really liked it !
January 6, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I love how it’s
“Mike Matei” on the first comment page, and then you bust out the hard core shit with “Motherfucker Mike” on the next. Nice!

This episode was good. It stuck to the never fail formula of angry guy on futon plays bad game. You can’t go wrong with that.
@Wesley26508 I agree, Spiderman and the Nerd had a hilarious back and forth. That episode was my all time favorite.

To GuneThar:
The name of the song at the end was Super Mario Brother 2 when you beat the game.
