That was probably the worst game you have reviewed so far, James. Wow. Lester was walking like he was trying to hold diarrhea in his ass while looking for a close by 7-11 to use it’s lavatory. Great review, James. I’ll make sure to stay the hell away from this one for sure.
96, reviews. Long way from youtube, that’s for sure. But this review resonates a real sadness. I look forward to the next Board james, you seem to have a lot more enthusiasm for the board games lately. Not to say anything outlandishly negative. It’s still better than “that guy in the coat” but it must be hard to get good material these days. Your collection is growing as well, maybe do a good game again, just for the hell of it. Like when you did The Wizard / SMB3, or Castlevania. You seemed to have a lot of fun and it showed. All in all, I still found it pretty funny, even without the overt vulgarism jokes. Nervous about episode one hundred?
Yeah, this is probably the worst of the rotoscoped Prince of Persia-esque games. At least, of the ones released on consoles. Flashback, Out of this World, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Blackthorne, etc, I liked all of those.
also neuroplay not to be a jerk or anything but ya got to take in all the work hes been doing on cinemassacre monster madness so for the lenght and the effort of this episode id say it was great like all the rest KEEP up the good work james ! i enjoy all the great entertainment you make …….also you right now adays tv does suck LOL great AVGN man enojyed this one as well
kevenz no he the avgn stuck in the past and now you cant watch old tv with a uhf tv you got to have a digital box and the avgn wouldnt know what that is didnt you watch him at com con he thought games and stuff were stop in the 80’s haha
Holy crap! It’s Lord of the Rings on the SNES in the intro. I remember reading the books in middle school and thinking, “oh man, this game is going to kick ass! They have so much to work with, Orcs, the Balrog and the Ring Wraiths. It’s going to be great!” Rather than being an epic masterpiece like Zelda, Alundra or Final Fantasy it instead was an AIDS infested piece of shit. The visuals alone were enough to give you glaucoma let alone the horrendous gameplay.
Also, keep up the good work James! I love watching these, not just for the humor but for the charming nostalgic factor. Having grown up on many of these games its amusing to look back on moments when Ninja Gaiden was kicking my ass (like the first time I was sent back to stage 6-1) or when the Wizard was released and we all got our first look at Super Mario Bros 3. Plus, it’s also nice to have some comfort knowing I wasn’t the only kid massively disappointed when I rented games like Godzilla, X-Men or really any other LJN herpies infested asshole. Fuck that company! =)
2:06- Show of hands; how many people here ever seen a geek/nerd walk like this? …I thought so.
3:48- Does anyone else notice that Lester looks like he’s humping the rock.
Well, James, I think you’ve found a game that’s horrifyingly WORSE than Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Honest to god, this is like The Garbage Pail Kids Movie equivilant of a video game. HOW IN THE TEN LEVELS OF HELL HAS ANYONE GOTTEN AWAY WITH LETTING THIS GAME BE RELEASED!?
Also, the funnyest moment of this episode is the Nerd describing the sequels that never were, even jumping ahead with the PlayStation 4.
Good Lord, that game was horrible. its was like an online -Unfair Platformer….Yea You know… The ones specifily designed to kill your character unless you get through the game in a Specific way. and this was on the SUPER NINTENDO? Id expect this from the regular Nintendo.
Oh man, Whats next? Gouls and Ghosts?, Alex Kidd and the God aweful sequils? OH! I know, maybe the game “Conflict”…Good lord that war-game was hard to figure out., Who ever hurd of a War game where a tank Carrying a flag was like the heart of an army? I mean, in Real life if you destroyed an enemy commander… its not like their soliders would lie down and die….. Super Battle Tank is another game a bit hard to figure in a way…. I get how Iam in a tank…. but come-on… why do I have to do All the work? wheres the army helping me fight the enemy? “Your Actions have resulted in a major allied set-back” – tch, whatever.
he has been busy because of monster madness, he said “don’t expect a masterpiece”, this video is “basic”, i think it’s pretty good, and that was a horrible game xD
LOL i just laugh at what Lester sounds like when he gets hurt good review. the flowers of Robert Mapilthorpe was a nice peaceful “game”. You have been very buisy with monster madness and you still release an AVGN episode. I will be waiting anciously for your next episode of whatever you make next., Keep up the great work!!!!
GOOD Job James on the review, i like these arbitrarily chosen games I never heard of over a game i know is bad from reputation, and good job bring up The Flowers Of Robert Mapplethorpe for the CD-i i would never imagine what kind of game that was until now.
The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe has intrigued me ever since those cdi episodes 2 years ago with hotel mario/zelda. The music is actually pretty relaxing, but hardly something one would expect when playing a game.
I think this is the first (?) episode that had the episode number in the title card. Nice way of counting toward a tremendous 100th episode in a few more months. I remember the wizard of oz episode explicitly said “40 something reviews” but after all these years most people probably aren’t aware there’s so many.
Man, I’ve been waiting for this video since 00:00 A.M. and finally around 11:00 P.M. to 11:30 P.M.
The wait was totally worth it.
A game that comes to close to being worse to Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Does it take the cake? No, lol I own Dr. Jekyll against the AVGN’s warnings. Lester The Unlikely is somewhat playable. But that’s comparing a piece of shit to a re-animated piece of shit that lives for a few seconds and melts to shit again.
Dr. Jekyll you can’t even attack anyone! and your just walking till you die. As Mr. Hyde, if you make it to the point where you died as Dr. Jekyll, you get hit by lightning, Game Over. And only if it had the game over screen from Friday the 13th, it would be the ultimate shitty game. Lester the Unlikely is generous and allows you to make it somewhere in the game, but the question, who the fuck in their right mind would attempt to beat Lester the Unlikely? Like play it from the Title screen to the End screen. Who?
I think he makes it look like he might start doing 16 bit reviews. The NES library is getting exhausted. It could be just coincidence, but the Ninety Sixth episode could be referring to 1996, which is the year the N64 was released, marking the end of the Super Nintendo as the console of choice for Nintendo. Purely speculation though.
Damn that has to be the absolute lamest main character in a video game ever. He can’t hold a rock and a ruby at once? For christ sake you could put them in your pocket in real life, let alone the fantasy world of video gaming. Top notch Nerd material.
Oh wow…. James, I saw those clips at the beginning of the video and couldn’t help but notice both the SNES “Lord of the Rings” game, AND the SNES version of “UItraman”. Talk about two of the most SHITACULAR Super Nintendo games I’ve ever played. I even OWNED Ultraman at one point and eventually my brother and I managed to beat it, but only after we learned how to do the special attacks to beat the monsters. And even then it was hard as hell!
>.< And that LotR game…what a piece of smelly squirrel shit. You can play as all four hobbits, which is cool, but then that's where the fun stops…the minute you get bit by a snake or managed to get poisoned in any other way, whichever Hobbit was unlucky enough to be poisoned was DONE. They just die after a little while, and there's nothing I could figure out that would cure the poison! ASS!! Please do a full review on LotR so people can see how horrible it is….and then NOT play it! Ever!
And while you're at it, and I'm on the subject of crap-crapular SNES games that NO ONE should play…you should pick up a copy of a fine little game named "James Bond JR"….. And then PRAY your head doesn't explode. -___-
Shit, I honestly think this was the best review done in awhile. I dont know why, but something about the nerd does just seem kinda…….off….in the last few reviews. But even with that (and that might just be my OWN nastalgea…..or however the fuck that crazy word is spelled) and hes STILL fucking classic. This game looks like something that was thought up when someone was on a bad trip lol.
gets the feeling that the next umpteen posts are going to officially widen “catboyjeremie’s” ass lol. I feel so so so sorry for you right now bud…literally…..I do…cant talk that way around SOME of these people here lol. *Puts on hat and walks awaaaaaaaaaaaaay whistling a tune*
Nice choice of game to do man, sweet as π But the end worried me a little when u watched tv and said “Fuck all games”. Were u trying to tell us something? Underlining message?
Is it just me or is the streaming at gametrailers really really bad??!!
I watched the video 4 times, including after a re-boot and each time its so choppy its practically unwatchable (despite my fast internet speed)!! the picture often freezes for 7/8 seconds at a time too …. YET the ad at the start of the video seems to stream without a glitch!!
Great video nonetheless. I just wish you could host the AVGN videos here, then have GT (or whoever currently hosts them) stream it from here
@catboyjeremie: Although I agree with you that it shows that he is tired from MonsterMadness (as he said himself) I do not at all agree with your tone nor what your write about it being the worst.. Thats not the case.. also even though he doesn’t show much of the game and spends a bit too much time on something else then the game itself, its still a basic and okay review, with hints of the way the older reviews was performed.
But could be interesting to see a longer and more in depth review of this, but not now. I far prefer seeing new games, then review of older ones..even if those was not that greatly talked about.
Good work James and really happy to see that you did actually post one for this time.
Btw: Hope that something big is planned for your soon to come 100th episode π
Love the show as always, but I had to make a point on this one.
I loved this game as a kid. Yes, really. It was cheap and looks terrible now, but it still deserved a more thorough examination than what the NERD had time to give it. I guess what struck me odd was this –
1. We both know this game was featured heavily in the help section of Nintendo Power, so that would have been the perfect excuse to bring back the Power again and show off more of the game! Even the cheats section printed the code – three times! – x,y,x,y,x,y,x,y, select, start. Easiest code in history.
2. Prince of Persia rules were in play on this title. It was my first entry to the genre but after playing more titles, like even the XBOX LIVE Persia remake, I found Lester to be no worse than any of those, even better than Nosferatu, which you mentioned.
3. Lastly, and this is the BIG one, Lester was kinda revolutionary. Yes, I mean it. It was the first game where the main character had the story affect their behavior. Halfway into the game, Lester begins to stand up straight, not get scared at everything, even wield real weapons. It was kinda beautiful and really progressive for 1994 (I’ll post a link). Not to mention branching paths (the jail scene), a love story where the main character does not win the girl, a unique setting , Out of this World-ish chase/puzzle levels and a cohesive plot that fit in the context of the world.
I agree with you, it’s not the best game ever. But this game needed the typical nerd research and examination and it makes me sad that more gamers won’t see how unique this title was at the time.
Hit me up if you agree. I won’t hold my breath for a Lester review redux (your busy, I get it) but I’d love to hear other peoples opinion, I always felt alone in my remembrance of Lester and I kinda had hope that a NERD review would bring it more popularity and respect for what it did right.
Holy shit dude, I used to play this game every day when I was a kid. Back then it wasn’t bad, just really challenging. There was nothing else, so we got good at it. Eventually there’s a level where you need to jump from vine to vine across a river, but not across it, UP it. I never got passed that level, and to this day I try with my old friends and a few beers every now and again.
P.S. I like how the LOTR game was in the title, THAT was a shitty game.
Nice one, but it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, like mentioned on the synopsis. It has stuff taht are original, like the sequels description and the shittier game comparison. And we all know, for the people who comes here very often, that James do those videos for free, in a way. It’s not like we rent his stuff. So lose stress and keep working on what you love most, J. Rolfe.
Just when I wanted to write to the board, that you should make a bit more non-NES titles… Good review, would have wathced more bullshit of the game, though I guess you didn’t want to experience more of it…
Honestly, wasn’t that good. The game wasn’t very interesting and the whole thing felt kinda rushed. I blame your lack of time due to Monster Madness, so I don’t really mind, though.
What’s with the attitude? Prick, if you think you could do better, than try it. What? You can’t do it? I thought so. While I’ll say this wasn’t the best review ever, I noticed a few parts where he started to resemble the 2006-2007 Nerd all over again. Or even the 2008 to early 2010 Nerd. At least praise him. All you thought was good was the Robert Maplethorpe thing and that really didn’t have to do with the actual episode except for 45 seconds or so. Douchebag.
Alright, I guess I’ll reply for fun since I love typing walls of text and I *might* get to see a few fanboys.
@poison_urbz
*Puts sunglasses* is it time to kick ass and chew bubblegum? Because I’m ready to deal with fanatic fanboys. I’m always ready for replies because every time, its just a bunch of crazy fanboys who thinks stuff like James, TGWTG and overrated games are flawless.
@TheBaron
I agree with you but it just felt as if James was sucking at the game on purpose.
@Gamerdude122
Are you out of your freaking mind? Really, that’s not how things work. You’re complaining about a guy who criticize something made by someone who makes money out of criticizing games. So what are you gonna do next? Tell James that he can’t do better than these game developers and that he should stop reviewing? Why don’t you think about that. Jerkass
Oh please Murphy2112, if that was the case, you wouldn’t be posting a comment like this in the first place in a attempt to “irritate” me. Also, how does it even make me sound like a fanboy when I actually have the balls to criticize something?… While having fun doing it?
It just seemed like your heart wasn’t in it……like- the words came out- but weren’t sparked w/ serious emotion- and we got to see only a little bit of the game….did Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde really take that much out of you???
Dude, you all need to calm down. We all love the NERD but I think we forget that James Rolfe is a real person. We are lucky he puts out a video for us every month, he’s not obligated to. Stop beating him down. I do see what you guys are saying, I do wish he went into more depth, but god who has time to do an in depth video game review?! Thank you James for continuing to put a video out every month π
Haha, my friend at lunch was telling me about this episode, and about Lester’s awkward walk and him getting all scared and shit! Very funny episode, my favorite parts were when you were explaining the sequels and the flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe.
Lester sure is a prick. ”What the hell is wrong with these game designers?” indeed. It’s like they went out of their way to make this game as annoying as possible. I can’t believe this is a SNES game.
Wow this one was fucking hilarious i don’t even know why it doesn’t have that many jokes but i just thought it was great maybe even my favorite episode great work James
Yea, I blame it on the little time he had that he didn’t explain the problems with the controls nor the difficulty, like in the scene with the rock, where it actually can’t get pushed closer to the cliff.
It would have been nice if he had time to mention that the game changes style the further you get I can understand why he didn’t. And I agree that although the idea of an evolving “hero” I still find that character way to lame for a main hero π Its an insult to geek’s π
Btw: Glad to see your tone changed for the better π
————————————————
A side note:
Why are so many people complaining? Even though James mentioned even before posting it, that one shouldn’t expect much from it due to time limitation. -_- Just accept this as a basic and still informative episode, with some humour.. and then go prepare for the excitement of the next one (How many will be that its going to be Christmas themed?) π
Really, when I wrote my post, my idea wasn’t to sound like a douche but just to show how disappointed I kind of was. Also, there’s nothing more silly than the “Its not like you can do better” and “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.” rubbish. Its as if some people couldn’t grasp how things work.
Honestly, I think the Independence Day review was the worst one, simply because of how relatively boring it was. Even then, some semblance of quality remains.
Of course, saying that a review that’s relatively well-received is the “worst” of the lot is almost a compliment for the rest of the reviews in disguise, isn’t it?
I don’t think you can even find those “dash 2” posts without manually typing them in the address bar unless you are subscribed to the rss feed. Both posts are otherwise identical, but there is 2 separate comments threads for the same article/video with the “dash 2” ones withering off and dying since once they disappear from the rss feed no one will ever see a link to them again.
I honestly have difficulty accepting that people make these games, look at the finished product and say “Yes, people will be happy that they’ve paid money for this. Good job, team”.
And thank you so much for finally showing The Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe. I’d been disturbingly intrigued ever since you first mentioned it.
Hey James, don’t worry about what a lot of these people are saying. Shoot I make movies too and I love the criticism quite frankly. The episode was hilarious and really in a way was almost like the last episode. It wasn’t about being a “masterpiece” but I really feel like you “re-visited” your roots as the Nerd in this episode…plain, basic, but funny as hell. Keep it up good buddy!
I don’t understand everyone who talks so much shit about James. I’m not going to say “If you don’t like it, don’t watch.” I’ve never understood how that makes sense seeing that… how do you know if you don’t like a video until you watch it?
What I do not get, however, is how anyone could be disappointed with James’ work in general. Have any of you guys ever made a video or attempted it in your life? It’s ridiculously hard, on the internet, to make something that even RESEMBLES something that RESEMBLES quality.
I can understand that people would be disappointed with this video. Hell, it’s definitely not one of his best. The source material was seriously lacking (from what it seems) to begin with. I tend to remember reading something about this game years ago that eventually you gain confidence or something.. but either way, James has always said he plays the games poorly on purpose to exaggerate points a lot of times. If something is frustrating in a game, it’s sometimes the best way to show it off.
So if I’m disappointed with this video… I don’t care. I’ve had years of enjoyment with James’ videos and even if this entire years worth of videos were sub-par, this still leaves his other years of excellency AND his movie reviews, Monster Madness, etc.
I don’t know what really was to be expected. There are a lot of shows on YouTube that I watch. Classic Game Room is awesome. I love Gaming Historian, MN12Bird, Hard4Games.. the best one I’ve discovered recently is EASILY Clan of the Grey Wolf (just search for that in YouTube and you’ll find it.. 16 bit gems, I blame not knowing about it on the fact that it’s .. “Clan of the Grey Wolf)..
Anyway, my point with the above paragraph is.. I cycle through a lot of those videos every day. I like some more than others, I sure as hell don’t bitch when one of them makes a video that isn’t as good as their other videos. There is a plethora of content on the internet and I’m grateful for all of it. I’m not contributing after all and neither are most of you.
Maybe we should give him some credit for the fact that the reason that some of you are so judgmental about him is the fact that he has produced such good content over the years that it really stands out when something isn’t perfect. Just keep it into perspective though, he’s a guy, not a god, and puts a LOT of effort into it. That isn’t debatable, it’s a fact. He just made 31 fucking movie reviews in one month. Give him a fucking break.
Nice glimpse at more games in the beginning, I like it when you do that. I thought the review was good, especially considering the daily entertainment provided by Monster Madness last month (thank you for that). I also liked seeing The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe… that was unexpected!
I’m still hoping to see an AVGN review of Total Recall for the NES one day. π
Was that Lord of the Rings for SNES playing during the theme song? That shot with the wolf? Please burn that game! I’m begging you to burn that game! You have every other game, you can skip that one!
James, I think this has been one of my favorite reviews of yours in a while. It was simple and basic and felt like a return to form to some of your earlier reviews, which are what got me watching you to begin with. I’d love to see a simple one like this thrown in with all the high production ones every now and again.
Lester the Molester. There’s part VII for ya, Haha! Lester in Space, Lester in The Hood. Oh boy, this game sure does stink. The character is not a nerd. Nerds are smart. This guy is just a dweeb. π
Great episode this. I liked when you showed Lester jumping on the turtle and made the Mario reference, Brilliant! π
I enjoyed the video. Not the greatest but it did intorduce me to a game I had never heard of. The cripples control is enough to make me want to never play this game. Perhaps you may go back and add more later as it seems theres a lot you didnt get to talk about.
I like how this game is now showing up on Gamespot’s most popular SNES games list at the #2 spot. Does that normally happen with most AVGN reviews? Never noticed until now.
In speaking of comic book geeks, Linkara, the host of Atop the Fourth Wall, can knock down Lester with one single punch in the face… while shouting “I AM A MAN!!!” of course
i was prepared to see a quick and basic episode, and didn’t expect a masterpiece. but i was all the more surprised when i got one.
the episode might not have been too sophisticated in terms of video production, but the writing and acting was genuine. so my ambition here is to point out that for some people like myself a basic episode like that is no less enjoyable than others. go on producing cinematic episodes, and have fun doing so, but if you consider an episode like this to be inferior then i’d say you’re mistaken.
the main reason i adore the AVGN is your writing, together with the fitting enactment. even the first two lines in this video are amazingly hilarious⦠in my eyes this is a classic episode, like the ones from y few years back. so thanks for these great 10 minutes, and please go on creating these as long as you enjoy it!
I agree with xanadoo. I really enjoyed the episode, what a masterpiece. You really turned this AVGN from just a critic ranting about games, to a show that I look forward to watching.
So I say make more of your game reviews more like this. And maybe introduce us to “The flower of Robert Mapple-Thorpe…. You really do have a weird collection of games, James. I really enjoyed the subtleties in this video. More of those, and also more acting sequences, but make it less predictable…
For all of those posts above me, that say that your heart wasn’t in this video, I say ignore them. Of course it was, or otherwise this video wouldn’t be as genuine as it is.
At last, have mercy that boom filled series of monster madness is finally over, what a misguided and misdirected waste of time? does anyone else think that the quality of AVGN has in fact DECLINED since James only decided to do one a month (not boom, hehehe) and spent his time elsewhere producing boom, and while we are on the topic, ws revisiting Dr Jekyll a really productive use of his time and of ours…. Boom http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/vizzedindex.php?ref=65348
Maybe the Next review has something to do with TV? What games do we know that have been on TV? or in some cases Vice Versa?
Well, WE do know that the Super Mario Brothers had 3 Different types of series, Spanning a Cross between SMB and SMB2 , SMB3 and of course SMW. Then Of Course we have the LOZ Cartoon. Captain N,….No Actually those were probably the only….Oh no wait Iam forgetting Sonic The Hedgehog…silly me. Is it just me? or is it only the Animated Video Game Characters that seem tolerable compaired to more recient Cross overs?
-Case in Point, The Nerds THREE part Review of the Ghostbuster Games, graphics aside, the games were Ass. A classic example that some franchises should stay in certain generas.
then we got SOME video games based off of single EPISODES of Cartoons. I never played Jimmy Neutron or Sponge Bob Games (Thank God) But Iam sure they suck in their own right. Sponge Bob is probably the worst, I mean , Did Burger King REALLY need to make toys centered around a single Episode? its reminds me of the “Drawn To Life” – Sponge Bob Squarepants Edition……REALLY?! Come on It was one Episode…..TO be fair it was another game I never played, so I can’t compleately Coment on it.
….Come to think of it, the Sonic X Series, Loosely tied in Various Sonic Games of the time, With the Meterex Saga being the only full -on ORIGONAL plot. Along with the BS Episodes in between.
@Ivan Velazquez
Indeed he does at first the game is a pain…but due to all the trials he goes through he becomes a man…kinda like in the book The Hatchet
Heck he even gets a girl..
I wish James would of also reviewed that part of the game as well
November 3, 2010 at 11:15 pm
NICE FIRST !!!! AVGN IS THE BEST SHIT EVER MADE
November 3, 2010 at 11:18 pm
OMG I actually have this game !!
AND IT SUCKS !
November 3, 2010 at 11:18 pm
you’ve outdone yourself this month James. hats off to ya
November 3, 2010 at 11:19 pm
Fantastic! Keep it up James!
November 3, 2010 at 11:34 pm
That was probably the worst game you have reviewed so far, James. Wow. Lester was walking like he was trying to hold diarrhea in his ass while looking for a close by 7-11 to use it’s lavatory. Great review, James. I’ll make sure to stay the hell away from this one for sure.
November 3, 2010 at 11:35 pm
Sweet. I was waiting for this.
Last sunday watched all of this years ‘Monster Madness’ in a row, It gave me a real appetite for a new AVGN episode.
Thnx James!
November 3, 2010 at 11:41 pm
Should have been called “Bernie The Unlikely” since he walks like in Bernie from “Weekends at Bernie’s”
November 3, 2010 at 11:44 pm
Never played this one before. Wow.
“TV now a days sucks” best line in the whole thing.
November 3, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Great Eps. Wish it was longer but whatever it was great. It will hold me back for next month.
November 3, 2010 at 11:47 pm
I cant believe i beat this game lol!! awesome nerd episode!
November 3, 2010 at 11:49 pm
i remember renting this game. i dont think i made it past the first level.
November 3, 2010 at 11:52 pm
Great episode James! Loved it. The only thing was it seemed a bit more focused on disgusting than angry. I don’t know. I loved it though. π
November 3, 2010 at 11:55 pm
November 3, 2010 at 11:58 pm
SERIOUSLY AVGN IS THE BEST EVER! CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE IN THE MEAN TIME YOU SHOULD JUST GET A TV SERIES ! I BET G4 WOULD DO IT !
November 4, 2010 at 12:01 am
Yeah, this is probably the worst of the rotoscoped Prince of Persia-esque games. At least, of the ones released on consoles. Flashback, Out of this World, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, Blackthorne, etc, I liked all of those.
Not so much this one.
November 4, 2010 at 12:06 am
hey james please do a Clash at Demonhead that old Nintendo 8 bit game it was realy fun game i know you must own it
November 4, 2010 at 12:10 am
tv sucks now a days? ehhh I don’t get it……. are you supposed to be in the future when you say that?
November 4, 2010 at 12:15 am
Another decent video of a really shitty game. π
But again, why doesn’t he destroy the cartridge like he used to do to his other games? I miss that. :/
November 4, 2010 at 12:23 am
also neuroplay not to be a jerk or anything but ya got to take in all the work hes been doing on cinemassacre monster madness so for the lenght and the effort of this episode id say it was great like all the rest KEEP up the good work james ! i enjoy all the great entertainment you make …….also you right now adays tv does suck LOL great AVGN man enojyed this one as well

November 4, 2010 at 12:39 am
Fuckin James, Just keeps pumpiin’ them out. YOU GUYS RULE’

November 4, 2010 at 12:50 am
I loved the last line “TV nowadays sucks”.
Also the CD-I part made me lol.
Good little review.
November 4, 2010 at 12:50 am
I don’t really like this video very much. I was kinda hoping you show more of the game.other then just 3 levels.
November 4, 2010 at 12:53 am
this game sucks monkey fuck!!!!! james r u going to review shitty tv shows? or maybe a shitty video game about tv? or are you going to be on tv?
November 4, 2010 at 12:59 am
November 4, 2010 at 1:01 am
November 4, 2010 at 1:05 am
he has been busy because of monster madness, he said “don’t expect a masterpiece”, this video is “basic”, i think it’s pretty good, and that was a horrible game xD
November 4, 2010 at 1:12 am
LOL i just laugh at what Lester sounds like when he gets hurt good review. the flowers of Robert Mapilthorpe was a nice peaceful “game”. You have been very buisy with monster madness and you still release an AVGN episode. I will be waiting anciously for your next episode of whatever you make next., Keep up the great work!!!!
November 4, 2010 at 1:17 am
GOOD Job James on the review, i like these arbitrarily chosen games I never heard of over a game i know is bad from reputation, and good job bring up The Flowers Of Robert Mapplethorpe for the CD-i i would never imagine what kind of game that was until now.
November 4, 2010 at 1:18 am
“What’s the point? It’s all gonna be dust one day.”
What a deliciously cynical line. It had me in stitches before the review even started.
November 4, 2010 at 1:37 am
The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe has intrigued me ever since those cdi episodes 2 years ago with hotel mario/zelda. The music is actually pretty relaxing, but hardly something one would expect when playing a game.
I think this is the first (?) episode that had the episode number in the title card. Nice way of counting toward a tremendous 100th episode in a few more months. I remember the wizard of oz episode explicitly said “40 something reviews” but after all these years most people probably aren’t aware there’s so many.
November 4, 2010 at 1:50 am
I especially liked the Robert Mapplethorpe interlude. Hilarious. It’s not a game; what is it?
November 4, 2010 at 2:00 am
Who?
November 4, 2010 at 2:36 am
Always wanted to play this game as a kid. I thought it looked funny.
But not as funny as this AVGN episdode, this was one of the best.
The games makes me wanna play Blackthorne on SNES
November 4, 2010 at 2:58 am
I think he makes it look like he might start doing 16 bit reviews. The NES library is getting exhausted. It could be just coincidence, but the Ninety Sixth episode could be referring to 1996, which is the year the N64 was released, marking the end of the Super Nintendo as the console of choice for Nintendo. Purely speculation though.
November 4, 2010 at 3:17 am
Damn that has to be the absolute lamest main character in a video game ever. He can’t hold a rock and a ruby at once? For christ sake you could put them in your pocket in real life, let alone the fantasy world of video gaming. Top notch Nerd material.
November 4, 2010 at 4:10 am
November 4, 2010 at 5:41 am
HAHA Nerd is stuck watching Ant Wars at the end. Awesome!
November 4, 2010 at 6:33 am
Shit, I honestly think this was the best review done in awhile. I dont know why, but something about the nerd does just seem kinda…….off….in the last few reviews. But even with that (and that might just be my OWN nastalgea…..or however the fuck that crazy word is spelled) and hes STILL fucking classic. This game looks like something that was thought up when someone was on a bad trip lol.
November 4, 2010 at 6:39 am
The title card is nice!
November 4, 2010 at 7:08 am
Finally a new avgn video! This lighted up my day, thank you James! π
November 4, 2010 at 8:21 am
gets the feeling that the next umpteen posts are going to officially widen “catboyjeremie’s” ass lol. I feel so so so sorry for you right now bud…literally…..I do…cant talk that way around SOME of these people here lol. *Puts on hat and walks awaaaaaaaaaaaaay whistling a tune*
November 4, 2010 at 8:28 am
I can’t help but think this is exactly like bernie’s walk patern in Weekend at Bernie’s II. Excellent review James !
November 4, 2010 at 8:59 am
Nice choice of game to do man, sweet as π But the end worried me a little when u watched tv and said “Fuck all games”. Were u trying to tell us something? Underlining message?
November 4, 2010 at 9:06 am
Is it just me or is the streaming at gametrailers really really bad??!!
I watched the video 4 times, including after a re-boot and each time its so choppy its practically unwatchable (despite my fast internet speed)!! the picture often freezes for 7/8 seconds at a time too …. YET the ad at the start of the video seems to stream without a glitch!!
Great video nonetheless. I just wish you could host the AVGN videos here, then have GT (or whoever currently hosts them) stream it from here
November 4, 2010 at 9:20 am
November 4, 2010 at 10:27 am

November 4, 2010 at 10:41 am
Holy shit dude, I used to play this game every day when I was a kid. Back then it wasn’t bad, just really challenging. There was nothing else, so we got good at it. Eventually there’s a level where you need to jump from vine to vine across a river, but not across it, UP it. I never got passed that level, and to this day I try with my old friends and a few beers every now and again.
P.S. I like how the LOTR game was in the title, THAT was a shitty game.
November 4, 2010 at 11:06 am
JUMP MOTHERFUCKER JUMP!
November 4, 2010 at 11:20 am
So what about the end? Do we get an Angry Television Nerd next time?
November 4, 2010 at 11:45 am
THIS is the BEST AVGN in a LONG time. It’s so hilarious! hahaha
November 4, 2010 at 11:57 am
Nice one, but it doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, like mentioned on the synopsis. It has stuff taht are original, like the sequels description and the shittier game comparison. And we all know, for the people who comes here very often, that James do those videos for free, in a way. It’s not like we rent his stuff. So lose stress and keep working on what you love most, J. Rolfe.
November 4, 2010 at 12:12 pm
please do a reveiws on the game genie:)
November 4, 2010 at 1:10 pm
Ingenious as always! YouΒ΄ve made my month!!
Hoping for more 16 bit reviews now. That would be awesome!
November 4, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Hey James!
Just when I wanted to write to the board, that you should make a bit more non-NES titles… Good review, would have wathced more bullshit of the game, though I guess you didn’t want to experience more of it…
November 4, 2010 at 2:35 pm
the fifth game is just a bag of shit
November 4, 2010 at 2:35 pm
Have you done a review on the Sega Activator Ring yet? If not, I think it could be good. Take a look:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7783366196223400692#
I can’t believe I’m even saying this, but I kind of miss the days when gimmick controllers came out every month.
November 4, 2010 at 3:03 pm
Awesome! You do all the monster madness and still have time for AVGN. Impresive.
November 4, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Honestly, wasn’t that good. The game wasn’t very interesting and the whole thing felt kinda rushed. I blame your lack of time due to Monster Madness, so I don’t really mind, though.
November 4, 2010 at 3:18 pm
@catboyjeremie
Douchebag.
November 4, 2010 at 3:37 pm
@catboyjeremie
You’re the only one here that sounds like a butthurt fanboy.
November 4, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Alright, I guess I’ll reply for fun since I love typing walls of text and I *might* get to see a few fanboys.
@poison_urbz
*Puts sunglasses* is it time to kick ass and chew bubblegum? Because I’m ready to deal with fanatic fanboys. I’m always ready for replies because every time, its just a bunch of crazy fanboys who thinks stuff like James, TGWTG and overrated games are flawless.
@TheBaron
I agree with you but it just felt as if James was sucking at the game on purpose.
@Gamerdude122
Jerkass
November 4, 2010 at 3:41 pm
Oh please Murphy2112, if that was the case, you wouldn’t be posting a comment like this in the first place in a attempt to “irritate” me. Also, how does it even make me sound like a fanboy when I actually have the balls to criticize something?… While having fun doing it?
November 4, 2010 at 3:56 pm
It just seemed like your heart wasn’t in it……like- the words came out- but weren’t sparked w/ serious emotion- and we got to see only a little bit of the game….did Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde really take that much out of you???
November 4, 2010 at 3:58 pm
Dude, you all need to calm down. We all love the NERD but I think we forget that James Rolfe is a real person. We are lucky he puts out a video for us every month, he’s not obligated to. Stop beating him down. I do see what you guys are saying, I do wish he went into more depth, but god who has time to do an in depth video game review?! Thank you James for continuing to put a video out every month π
November 4, 2010 at 4:31 pm
Holy shitballs! TOKI! in the intro credits! I’d like to see that reviewed to be honest! π
Overall I quite liked the review. It seemed to play a lot like PoP and Flashback, but with more ass than the other two great games.
November 4, 2010 at 4:33 pm
even though i was born in 1997 i bet watching a broken t.v. would be better than playing that piece of shit
November 4, 2010 at 4:39 pm
Haha, my friend at lunch was telling me about this episode, and about Lester’s awkward walk and him getting all scared and shit! Very funny episode, my favorite parts were when you were explaining the sequels and the flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe.
November 4, 2010 at 5:26 pm
Excellent review james
November 4, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Very good review, if a bit short.
Lester sure is a prick. ”What the hell is wrong with these game designers?” indeed. It’s like they went out of their way to make this game as annoying as possible. I can’t believe this is a SNES game.
November 4, 2010 at 6:12 pm
Wow this one was fucking hilarious i don’t even know why it doesn’t have that many jokes but i just thought it was great maybe even my favorite episode great work James
November 4, 2010 at 7:07 pm
@catboyjeremie
November 4, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Disobeying video game characters… does Guybrush Threepwood count? π
November 4, 2010 at 7:11 pm
Now you watch the nerd on the iPhone.
http://www.skyfire.com/product/iphone
Works fine on my 3GS.
November 4, 2010 at 8:44 pm
@TheBaron
November 4, 2010 at 8:55 pm
@catboyjeremie
November 4, 2010 at 9:22 pm
I saw a SHIT PICKLE in the back wall!
November 4, 2010 at 9:31 pm
5-th game was awesome!
November 4, 2010 at 9:50 pm
Worst Character Ever!!
November 4, 2010 at 10:10 pm
The 5-th game was my favorite
November 4, 2010 at 10:28 pm
Awesome as always, keep up the good work!
November 4, 2010 at 10:51 pm
Why do you double post everything these days?
http://www.cinemassacre.com/2010/11/03/avgn-lester-the-unlikely-2/
I don’t think you can even find those “dash 2” posts without manually typing them in the address bar unless you are subscribed to the rss feed. Both posts are otherwise identical, but there is 2 separate comments threads for the same article/video with the “dash 2” ones withering off and dying since once they disappear from the rss feed no one will ever see a link to them again.
November 4, 2010 at 11:19 pm
Damn I wonder who the genius is that came up with that game! Probly not even a person,it was a fuckin monkey who created this game!!!
November 4, 2010 at 11:38 pm
shitty game, nerd concept is cool but…..that nerd was awful. Great vid, awesome review. long live the NERD and company!!!
November 4, 2010 at 11:57 pm
I honestly have difficulty accepting that people make these games, look at the finished product and say “Yes, people will be happy that they’ve paid money for this. Good job, team”.
And thank you so much for finally showing The Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe. I’d been disturbingly intrigued ever since you first mentioned it.
November 5, 2010 at 12:26 am
“Whats the point? its all going to be dust one day.”
hmm, could this mean that James is a believer in 2012! 0.o
November 5, 2010 at 1:00 am
Hey James, don’t worry about what a lot of these people are saying. Shoot I make movies too and I love the criticism quite frankly. The episode was hilarious and really in a way was almost like the last episode. It wasn’t about being a “masterpiece” but I really feel like you “re-visited” your roots as the Nerd in this episode…plain, basic, but funny as hell. Keep it up good buddy!
November 5, 2010 at 1:08 am
wtf? this came out on Wednesday? I was here Wednesday..
November 5, 2010 at 1:43 am
Well, after watching the Roger Rabbit episode I did enjoy this one, unlike many people. ItΒ΄s nice to see youΒ΄re still doing reviews the classic way.
November 5, 2010 at 2:16 am
Keep on rockin’ James-bo.
November 5, 2010 at 2:47 am
Nice glimpse at more games in the beginning, I like it when you do that. I thought the review was good, especially considering the daily entertainment provided by Monster Madness last month (thank you for that). I also liked seeing The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe… that was unexpected!
I’m still hoping to see an AVGN review of Total Recall for the NES one day. π
November 5, 2010 at 6:01 am
Was that Lord of the Rings for SNES playing during the theme song? That shot with the wolf? Please burn that game! I’m begging you to burn that game! You have every other game, you can skip that one!
November 5, 2010 at 9:56 am
James, I think this has been one of my favorite reviews of yours in a while. It was simple and basic and felt like a return to form to some of your earlier reviews, which are what got me watching you to begin with. I’d love to see a simple one like this thrown in with all the high production ones every now and again.
November 5, 2010 at 10:07 am
not so good episode…
November 5, 2010 at 11:52 am
Lester the Molester. There’s part VII for ya, Haha! Lester in Space, Lester in The Hood. Oh boy, this game sure does stink. The character is not a nerd. Nerds are smart. This guy is just a dweeb. π
Great episode this. I liked when you showed Lester jumping on the turtle and made the Mario reference, Brilliant! π
November 5, 2010 at 2:27 pm
That game sucked really hard. But I suppose not enough ’cause James didn’t drink any Rolling Rock!
November 5, 2010 at 3:22 pm
I enjoyed the video. Not the greatest but it did intorduce me to a game I had never heard of. The cripples control is enough to make me want to never play this game. Perhaps you may go back and add more later as it seems theres a lot you didnt get to talk about.
November 5, 2010 at 4:46 pm
The Flowers of Robert Mapple…thorpe. AVGN sure knows how to dig up the weirdest games.
November 5, 2010 at 8:50 pm
Where the hell, did you get all this games?! and how did you got to know them?! the only thing i know for sure is that all this games are analbags
November 5, 2010 at 9:28 pm
The sixth game is a disc constructed of Orangutan Diarrhea!
Is the seventh game a Hyena’s @$$hole?
November 5, 2010 at 11:59 pm
The 7th game just has a one second long animation of the Nerd kicking Lester in the balls, and it repeats over and over again.
November 6, 2010 at 11:25 am
eyy james i am new why do you not review the vastlevania lord of the shadow any way
November 6, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I like how this game is now showing up on Gamespot’s most popular SNES games list at the #2 spot. Does that normally happen with most AVGN reviews? Never noticed until now.
November 6, 2010 at 1:55 pm
not the best avgn episode, itΒ΄s kinda boring
November 6, 2010 at 5:59 pm
having trouble viewing this on gametrailers ir seems after the adverts the video wont play π
November 6, 2010 at 7:00 pm
finally watched this and its hillarious
November 6, 2010 at 7:03 pm
ATVN – ANGRY TELEVISION NERD
November 6, 2010 at 11:07 pm
In speaking of comic book geeks, Linkara, the host of Atop the Fourth Wall, can knock down Lester with one single punch in the face… while shouting “I AM A MAN!!!” of course
November 7, 2010 at 4:18 am
Not his best work….he just didn’t seem inspired for this one.

i was prepared to see a quick and basic episode, and didn’t expect a masterpiece. but i was all the more surprised when i got one.
the episode might not have been too sophisticated in terms of video production, but the writing and acting was genuine. so my ambition here is to point out that for some people like myself a basic episode like that is no less enjoyable than others. go on producing cinematic episodes, and have fun doing so, but if you consider an episode like this to be inferior then i’d say you’re mistaken.
the main reason i adore the AVGN is your writing, together with the fitting enactment. even the first two lines in this video are amazingly hilarious⦠in my eyes this is a classic episode, like the ones from y few years back. so thanks for these great 10 minutes, and please go on creating these as long as you enjoy it!

Keep Filming!

It was a good review but in my opion he seemed to be running low on energy when he made monster madness must have taken its toll

The best AVGN eps are for games based on a franchise.
These “unique” games never appeal to me.

@Ivan Velazquez
Indeed he does at first the game is a pain…but due to all the trials he goes through he becomes a man…kinda like in the book The Hatchet
Heck he even gets a girl..
I wish James would of also reviewed that part of the game as well

I love how you put good music from Debussy in this video. Good beautiful music always makes a video better. Thanks for another great episode.
