I gotta say, for a really short episode, this had many hilariously hysterical moments!
November 3, 2010 at 11:30 pm
The ending was awesome, well, the whole review was awesome!
November 3, 2010 at 11:37 pm
This episode was weird… A good episode but where’s the rage, anger, and over the top explicit language? :'(
I understand that you made loads of vids this month and you probably had very little time to do this, but the rage should always be there. I miss the old nerd from the Batman episodes. That was pure and epic AVGN rage. Please bring him back.
November 3, 2010 at 11:43 pm
This was great. I have never even heard of that game, but it looks like one of those games that would be fun if you don’t mind getting a little pissed off. This episode did lack the usual level of anger, but it was still really good.
November 3, 2010 at 11:45 pm
the review was alright, it was kinda short but hey whatever you did it for us fans so thanks for pulling through this month.
btw the game’s horrible.
November 3, 2010 at 11:46 pm
I have to admit that this game’s control looks really awful but I have to ask you AVGN, do you play the controls so bad on purpose ? In some areas, playing “defensively” and not being in a hurry should be better…especially with bad control games.
November 4, 2010 at 12:01 am
hahaha–that game looks like shit. I’m an old school gamer and had a subscription to Nintendo Power back in the late 80s/early 90s, but I’ve never heard of that game
November 4, 2010 at 12:03 am
After a session on my emulator I have concluded that this game is quite ass…
November 4, 2010 at 12:21 am
That was great. Sometimes the more basic reviews are funnier than the more elaborate ones. Very entertaining.
November 4, 2010 at 12:25 am
Hey quite a nice vid, on last post you said that we shouldn’t expect to much of it, but is actually what i was expecting, just a game. the last simple game you reviewed was zelda 2, but that one was not a bad game.
To come back to the standards is fine sometimes. I didn’t get the ending the first time, but i think i get it now.
Have been watching a lot your CDI reviews, and I was always curious about how the mapelthorpe game was.
November 4, 2010 at 12:53 am
Good episode James. Seems the comments on GT are a little harsh, which is unfortunate considering it’s a great addition to AVGN’s library and not a bad review by any means. I, and I’m sure a handful of others, enjoy when a review of just one game doesn’t come off overacted or overdone. For games in a series or console reviews, it’s much more natural and funny when the nerd goes berserk, but to spend 15-20 minutes railing out every curse in the book over a single game that definitely isn’t the worst yet would be overkill, and it seems better to keep the humor somewhat subtle. I think casual fans like the funny bursts of rage regardless over what it is, and people who watch regularly and are more familiar can still enjoy and respect just a straight up game review with more game footage, and the occasional angry/shocked reaction shots. Great stuff man, can’t wait for the next one.
November 4, 2010 at 1:32 am
Wow…. Did my Comment get removed?… Well Anyway, Long story Short. this was a great video…. that game totaly sucked.
Aside from my request for Alex Kidd (and/ or one of its sequils) maybe the NES game “Conflict”? I never did quite figure that game growing up.
November 4, 2010 at 1:54 am
Don’t know what you guys are complaining about, calling this a short episode. Back in MY day, an AVGN episode (or should I say, ANN episode) lasted 4-7 minutes on average, and you wouldn’t know WHEN the next one was coming.
You damn kids these days. Don’t realize the awesome situation we have now with 10 min on average videos GUARANTEED each month.
PS Love the episode, James. Simple, straightforward video. No bells and whistles, just the Nerd. I think it’s necessary to have that to keep things lively. Great work and thanks as always.
November 4, 2010 at 3:04 am
Another great AVGN so quick after MM!
And James could have made that last TV comment with an actual program playing lol, like something from Nickelodeon.
November 4, 2010 at 3:11 am
This is just freaking hilarious! I used to watch this but I got busy with work, so… I will forever love AVGN.
November 4, 2010 at 4:16 am
OMG it’s finally here!, I was just talking to my friend, hoping there would be a new AVGN episode, and it’s here!. Thanks for the monster madness goodness!, your outfit made you look like Rob Zombie mixed with Chad Krogger from Nickleback!. lol
November 4, 2010 at 6:04 am
Got to get me the Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe game. That one looked bad ass.
And I really liked the new style. A bit more sophisticated but still harsh and filthy 🙂
November 4, 2010 at 6:34 am
The Flowers Of Robert Mapplethorpe part had be dying so hard. That was an unexpected but awesome addition.
November 4, 2010 at 7:50 am
Urkle vs. Lester, who will be “The Deadliest Warrior”?????????
November 4, 2010 at 8:58 am
Just wanted to let you, and others know that no one is deleting your comments. If you click on the banner picture, they are separate comments than the ones from clicking the text link… I don’t know why that is, but they’re 2 separate entities
November 4, 2010 at 9:10 am
wtf my comment got deleted. NERD, underlying message at the end of your vid with “Fuck all games”???
November 4, 2010 at 9:48 am
That was hilarious! And now I want that CD-i game so bad!!
November 4, 2010 at 10:26 am
Love the show as always, but I had to make a point on this one.
I loved this game as a kid. Yes, really. It was cheap and looks terrible now, but it still deserved a more thorough examination than what the NERD had time to give it. I guess what struck me odd was this –
1. We both know this game was featured heavily in the help section of Nintendo Power, so that would have been the perfect excuse to bring back the Power again and show off more of the game! Even the cheats section printed the code – three times! – x,y,x,y,x,y,x,y, select, start. Easiest code in history.
2. Prince of Persia rules were in play on this title. It was my first entry to the genre but after playing more titles, like even the XBOX LIVE Persia remake, I found Lester to be no worse than any of those, even better than Nosferatu, which you mentioned.
3. Lastly, and this is the BIG one, Lester was kinda revolutionary. Yes, I mean it. It was the first game where the main character had the story affect their behavior. Halfway into the game, Lester begins to stand up straight, not get scared at everything, even wield real weapons. It was kinda beautiful and really progressive for 1994 (I’ll post a link). Not to mention branching paths (the jail scene), a love story where the main character does not win the girl, a unique setting , Out of this World-ish chase/puzzle levels and a cohesive plot that fit in the context of the world.
I agree with you, it’s not the best game ever. But this game needed the typical nerd research and examination and it makes me sad that more gamers won’t see how unique this title was at the time.
Hit me up if you agree. I won’t hold my breath for a Lester review redux (your busy, I get it) but I’d love to hear other peoples opinion, I always felt alone in my remembrance of Lester and I kinda had hope that a NERD review would bring it more popularity and respect for what it did right.
November 4, 2010 at 11:23 am
Idk, I kinda agree with Taylor Hall. I don’t really know this game, but, in my opinion, all of AVGN’s best videos are the ones where he researches them. Taylor Hall made this game sound interesting, and I’m sure the Nerd could have done WAY better if he had taken the time.
In a way, it’s kinda like AVGN’s older reviews. He started the game, but we never really got to see it. He ended up making an entirely new video to finish the games he hadn’t in the past. Why do that when he could just complete them now?
Otherwise the video was good, and yeah, he did say not to expect a lot, but I could wait an extra week or two to see some background info put into his reviews.
November 4, 2010 at 12:26 pm
31 days of awesome videos and now this. It must be Christmas
November 4, 2010 at 12:39 pm
The CD-I part made me laugh so hard! I didn’t have that particular “game” when I was little, but it’s in the same vein as some of their others I did have.
November 4, 2010 at 1:08 pm
Did you choose to review this game in the first scene of the video ? 😀
November 4, 2010 at 4:02 pm
One thing so you can see this review is truly “quick and basic” is that you can actually hold a weapon and an item in this game at the same time. Also the rock jump isn’t that hard.
I think he just needed some funny stuff ;)
November 4, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Lester is a dork!
November 4, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Personally, I liked the older AVGN episodes more. I mean, these are not bad, don’t get me wrong, but if you compare them to the 2007 and 2008 episodes, you’ll see that there are huge differences. I really don’t know how to describe, especally with my limited vocabulary as a German. 😛
But, I think you all know what I mean.
Keep up the good work . 🙂
November 4, 2010 at 5:28 pm
Great work, James. Even though you said that it wasn’t going to be a masterpiece, it still made me LMAO!!!!!!!!!
November 4, 2010 at 5:42 pm
“Robert Mapplethorpe (November 4, 1946 – March 9, 1989) was an American photographer, known for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and nude men. The frank, homosexual eroticism of some of the work of his middle period triggered a more general controversy about the public funding of artworks.”
We’re all lucky it is the FLOWERS featured in that “game”.
November 4, 2010 at 6:50 pm
The first part of the game depicts Lester as a very cowardly character. Every time he encounters a new creature, he runs away in the opposite direction with a scream (temporarily removing the controls from the player’s hand). Upon approaching the creature a second time, Lester walks slowly, protecting himself with his arms. Once a certain type of creature has been defeated, the player will be able to walk to this type of creature without any further sign of fear. At the beginning of the game, Lester walks in a very lazy, laid-back stance, suggesting weakness and lack of courage. However, after saving an indigenous girl from a huge gorilla, the girl gives a kiss to the hero and he is suddenly changed. In the following levels, Lester has a very upright and courageous stance.
got them from wikipedia sounds cool but u cant blame james for not being able to play much guys working his ass off for everyone so thank you james for the video it was entertaining
November 4, 2010 at 7:29 pm
You said not to expect a masterpeice, but a masterpeice is what we got!, Let me tell you this video had me rolling with laughter it’s old school Nerd and to the point the game sucked and plenty of foul language, great. I’d love to see more videos in this style. Monster Madness rocked this year too. Keep up the great work!
November 4, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Oh my!!…I’m played that game!!!..Very Bad…bad controls, bad gameplay and stupid difficult
November 4, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Ha Ha great to have avgn back i have really missed it alot! *not that i don’t like monster madness* gr8 vid James, That douchebag totally walks like steve urkel. Nothing wrong about being proud to be a nerd but let’s face it unless nerds are wizards they suck as gaming characters.
November 4, 2010 at 9:08 pm
I enjoyed this one. There is somthing about an angry nerd reviewing a game about a cowardly nerd. This review was funny because the game itself is funny. I admit it’s short for the only video in November, but adding on Monster Maddness and such, I certainly don’t feel short changed in the slightest.
November 4, 2010 at 10:03 pm
It was fun to watch, I played this game years ago.
James, you didn’t make it far enough though. Lester gets kissed by a Mayan girl and becomes much more manly. It’s kind of different then!
November 4, 2010 at 10:15 pm
I actually have this game. I got it from a friend and never returned.
I wonder why he doesnt care if the game is still with me.
November 4, 2010 at 10:17 pm
“Have you ever had a game character disobey?”
Yes: Pac-Man 2 on Super Nintendo. I’m fucking serious.
November 5, 2010 at 1:41 am
Great episode, the sequel count was hilarious. And you’re right – tv really sucks nowadays
November 5, 2010 at 8:08 am
Goddamn. I knew this game existed, but I never bothered to play it. I’m glad I didn’t now.
November 5, 2010 at 9:32 am
When I first watched this new episode, I knew after the first three or so minutes that there would be a lot of rage over at the GT.com comments and a general dislike and the most common complaint that this episode is not “funny” enough. I can’t believe how so many people can be ignorant about the stylstic devices used. In my oppinion, one of the reasons why there is so few “AVGN-rage” is due to the fact that the AVGN is supposed to share the same characteristics as the protagonist of the video game being reviewed. It is the first time that the main character of a game the AVGN is reviewing is actually someone a geeky character as the AVGN can relate to, and I think that Mr. Rolfe has done a magnificient job in this regard. Without wanting to sound like a AVGN / James Rolfe fanboy, most folks should realize that Mr. Rolfe is – at least in my oppinion – an accomplished artist and well versed with the cinematic medium . Even though the AVGN tends to aim for apparent jokes (the “rage”, the use of over-the-top metaphors, made-up curse words, ect.), but when watching and trying to understand and truly appreciate the work of an artist, you should always take his previous work, his methods of style and his development into consideration before passing judgment. That does not mean that it is not allowed to critize (on the contrary, it is the only way for an artist to know how he can improve himself not only in is art but as a person as whole), but I think we all have to agree that the AVGN series, like all of Mr. Rolfe’s works, has long since developed far beyond being just a sequence of swearing and raging (as a final notion, just go ahead and count the movie quotes and references made by the nerd character over the final few episodes, and you’ll know where I’m coming from.)
November 5, 2010 at 10:40 am
I noticed this is #96 … for #100 you should include a month-long celebration of the nerd!
November 5, 2010 at 11:58 am
Fantastic quality production.
I nominate the poo-streaming paper bag for Best AVGN Prop.
November 5, 2010 at 12:14 pm
The Flowers of Robert Maplethorpe was hilarious.
November 5, 2010 at 4:38 pm
Wow…just wow…first a month of horror film review and then a new AVGN episode…great!
I laughed so hard at the part of the CD-i…I even cried for the laughing…
Keep the good work up 😉
November 5, 2010 at 6:30 pm
Great episode! It’s always a good episode when has a CDi game. xD
Since next episode is the December episode I like to request the “christmas oppening song”, I missed the song in last years episode…
November 5, 2010 at 10:04 pm
One of my favorite nerd reviews
+ For the sequels
+ For running away from turtle
+For CDI game
+For the doody jokes
My personal favorite still being SwordQuest such epic history!
November 6, 2010 at 2:15 am

November 6, 2010 at 4:18 am
u need to celebrate the 100 with the epic shit of all times!!! E-fucking-T man!!!!
November 6, 2010 at 5:27 am
I’m a fan of this video, and some people need to back off a bit on the criticism. If this video isn’t up to “you’re” par you have to realize he’s been busy with monster madness. Which by the way made my smile greatly.
November 6, 2010 at 10:01 am
i agree. this may not be his best video but people cant expect every video to be amazing I think its awesome that james still takes time out of his busy schedule to make these videos whether they’re good or not. i love watching them
November 6, 2010 at 3:34 pm
I don’t care if I sound like a total fanboy or not because this is the first forum I’ve ever signed up to comment on. So I’m inherently a fanboy. Anyway, it’s almost thanksgiving, and I want to make a list of what I’m thankful for:
In this tough economy, money is hard to come by. All of these people complaining about the quality of the videos or advertising need a dose of reality and talk to someone like me that can’t even afford cable TV. James Rolfe is providing a very inexpensive and highly entertaining website that has provided me with hours of enjoyment.
You can sit there and complain, but internet petitions do nothing. Vote with your dollars folks and support the guy.
November 6, 2010 at 3:35 pm
Really Funny Video, That is one piece of shit game, WTF?
The one thing I hated the most, even more than his walk, was the moaning he made when he got hurt, GRRRR he sounds so stupid I wanted to kill him, Who in the hell made a game so stupid, that person should had been fired, I mean, I get that there are games out there that sucks, well the video game nerd knows too well, But the difference this time, is that the character is so uniquely STUPID that, It was even hard to see James play, That Lester is just a fucking asshole!
Great video James, It was really funny! 🙂
November 6, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Ever since seeing this I’ve been playing Lester the Unlikely a lot. I just found out that you can carry two objects at the same time.
November 7, 2010 at 12:51 am
That was actually one of the most hilarious episodes I’ve seen in a while, laughed my ass off. Great job guys.
November 7, 2010 at 11:40 pm
I like that when Lester falls into a pit of fire lava his response is “oh”
November 8, 2010 at 7:27 am
The video quality is going down bad.
Maybe it was better when he was less popular.
November 8, 2010 at 11:28 am
Review was kind of boring, but i did like the comparison of shit-to-wine. Review your library of awful CDI games, then take a dump on each and every one.
November 8, 2010 at 12:49 pm
Well done on this episode, James. I think this game is slightly worse than Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
In speaking of comic book nerds, Linkara of Atop the Fourth Wall can repeatedly kick lester in the nuts while shouting “I AM A MAN!!!”
I love your discriptions of the sequels that never were, even going as far ahead to the PS4.
November 8, 2010 at 1:47 pm
November 8, 2010 at 6:41 pm
@pickes500 I agree entirely.
November 8, 2010 at 7:56 pm
You’re getting nearer and nearer to you’re 100th episode
November 10, 2010 at 5:04 am
I have to say I’m rather disappointed with this episode. He pretty much does the same thing over and over for the entire duration of the episode and I found it boring. I’ve noticed lately your quality on these video’s has waned quite a bit and I find myself less interested in each episode that is released.
Now I understand you have alot on your plate, and from your AVGN movie explanation video you said that you haven’t lost your edge but I can’t help thinking that it is starting to dwindle a bit. I am looking forward to the AVGN movie of course. It just sucks that your more recent AVGN video’s pale in comparison to your earlier stuff. Nothing beats the first bible games video and that is my favorite to date along with all the ones from 2006. I don’t know but I hope you pull out of this whatever is the case and whatnot.
November 11, 2010 at 12:04 am
James, you’re a hero.
However, you were far too mellow in this episode. Most of your humor relies on your anger, your character is so bored lately. Just a bit of feedback from a longterm watcher. Thanks for the upload, did make my day :]
November 11, 2010 at 6:40 am
Your videos are only getting worse, you need to WANT to make vids, show enthusiasm and creativity, come on James, you can do so much better than this.
November 11, 2010 at 3:41 pm
It was OK.
November 11, 2010 at 10:11 pm
YAY!!!! almost your 100th episode!
November 13, 2010 at 1:16 am
wow, the uniquenss of lester was very sad:-D
November 14, 2010 at 9:07 pm
Is James sick, maybe? His videos are usually hilarious, but in this one it seemed like he wasn’t even trying. I’m not going to complain: I know that James wants his videos to be good just as much as I do. I hope that he gets well soon, and brings the energy and the funny back next month.
At least the ending was hilarious. ^_^
November 17, 2010 at 1:41 am
You know, i thought this review was hilarious,
just the way lester was humping that rock, and james was so pissed at him,
but i noticed something, that this games is really similar to
the moan’s he make’s
the rock throwing, and the bat’s that chase him,
