AVGN, your the great redneck hope!. lol i just watched this movie 2 days ago and watch it every year about this time i also love his other movies except perhaps his later ones which i didnt really see at a young age. I’d also highly recommend it for its humor and actually well done special effects for what their worth.

Give it a watch, this movie gets 4 cans of MIAK out of 5.

Nice review, James, even though there already is a review on TGWTG ;)

And about the MIAK: Take a look at this document. This stuff is stored in an iron drum just like the stuff Ernest had.

I don’t reccomend you to drink this xD

Grew up with all of these as a kid, but this one takes the cake for me. Rented it on Xbox last week, and so I’m glad I’m seeing your review so shortly after watching this gem xD

This was the first movie I ever saw a sneak preview of. Was either very early 1991 or late 1990, not sure. We got posters from the movie, and saw it several months before the wide release. Pretty cool. Packed with lots of kids too. I was 7 or 8 at the time, and I remember the bed sequence scaring the bejeezus out of me. This one actually has some decent scares and production values, especially in comparison to some of the other Ernest productions. The only other Ernest film I’d really suggest anyone see is Ernest Goes To Jail, which has its moments.

  • psychogamer

    October 27, 2010 at 4:03 am

also ill send you some MIAK james

  • October 27, 2010 at 4:04 am

Yay, good to know someone else likes Ernest.
NC slaughtered this film, but I’m glad you like it. :-)

  • DannyD

    October 27, 2010 at 4:16 am

Jim Varney really was a great actor, seriously underrated and typecast. But in the few moments where he was allowed to break out of it, he put out some great performances.

And this movie… yeah, it’s stupid, incredibly so. But it’s supposed to be. Ernest is screwball comedy, and it’s mixed with horror and still tried to be family friendly. Was a very difficult balancing act, but I think it pulled it off very well.

  • October 27, 2010 at 4:17 am

Hi James I’m from Bulgaria. :) I can tell you that there is no such thing a ” Authentic Bulgarian MIAK ” :D :) Big Fan BTW

I don’t think kids even trick-or-treat anymore, it sucks. There’s all sorts of these types of movies in the 80′s and early 90′s that would probably draw all sorts of protests if released today.

  • October 27, 2010 at 4:24 am

You already used that monster madness opening :P

  • sobekflakmonkey

    October 27, 2010 at 4:48 am

lol wow i have been trying to think of the name of this movie for so long now, so happy you reviewed this one! such a great movie!

  • October 27, 2010 at 5:17 am

Hahahaha… Authentic Bulgarian MIAK! Hilarious :D … As we found out, MIAK is a kind of chemical, but as far as I know it has no specific connection to Bulgaria whatsoever(I’m Bulgarian btw). Probably they used Bulgaria just because it’s a strange sounding name of a country that most Americans have probably never heard of(so they wouldn’t know we don’t have any MIAK!)

On a non-related subject – keep up the good work with .. everything! Loving all of your videos.

  • Svetli

    October 27, 2010 at 5:20 am

Ah, Ernest, how we miss thee! As you may or may not be aware, the Nostalgia Critic just did a negative review of Ernest Scared Stupid. Do I smell another war coming?

Yea, I call thee forth, Trantor!

  • Crowbar

    October 27, 2010 at 5:25 am

I’m quite unable to see anything good in this movie since the NostalgiaCritic ripped it apart so badly. Ernest in general certainly seems to be funny, though. It’s a shame that he apparently never made it to Germany.

  • horrorfanboy

    October 27, 2010 at 5:33 am

Here’s an interesting fact. The guys who did the troll effects were the Chiodo brothers. They’re the same special effects dudes who made the critters and the killer klowns from outer space.

I can say that I was also a big Ernest fan as a kid. And this movie, to me, is still awesome. I haven’t seen it in some time, but this review deffinetely makes me want to.

And no offense to the Nostalgia Critic, but he never really does the best job with feelings of Nostalgia for me, that is the fond feeling when thinking of the past. I think he should be called the Nostalgia Killer, myself.

  • lemurjim

    October 27, 2010 at 6:06 am

Wow, we haven’t had the same movie reviewed in such close proximity with the Nostalgia Critic since The Wizard!

  • Erno

    October 27, 2010 at 6:56 am

I hadn’t ever heard about this character. Thats not a suprise because I liv in Finland. So all there is to say, is that from this point on: I’m vary proud to be named Ernest.

  • Aberrance

    October 27, 2010 at 7:00 am

Hmmm, i’m from Bulgaria and i’m about your age, i know Ernest films. And “Miak” don’t know what the hell is this thing. I doubt in his existence. Anyway i will search some info about it, but i doubt that will find …

  • sashik

    October 27, 2010 at 7:08 am

Im actually from Bulgaria bu i dont know what miak means

  • beganoo1

    October 27, 2010 at 7:09 am

Alright , I’m from Bulgaria and there’s no such thing as MIAK here. The only thing that comes close is a beverage we call “Buza” but I’m pretty sure its not the same stuff that’s in the movie.

Sorry if anyone is disappointed, lol. :P

  • Aberrance

    October 27, 2010 at 7:18 am

Nope i cant find real explanation what can be” Miak”. So someone made it up, cos if we have or had this product must be very popular because of his worldwide sell and for sure our most popular product is Yogurt and was created here in Bulgaria.

  • October 27, 2010 at 7:19 am

I preferred watching TGWTG tearing this movie a new one, probably down to my overtly cynical nature.

  • WhiteRaven

    October 27, 2010 at 7:35 am

Thank you Mike for including this movie in your Monster Madness reviews! It’s definitely a cult classic with my girlfriend and I. We watch it every Hallowe’en along with a select other horror/comedy films. It freaked me out as a kid too, especially the troll army forming under the tree as some sort of brussel sprout egg! Thanks again! :)

  • That Guy From Bulgaria

    October 27, 2010 at 7:38 am

I also live in Bulgaria and have never heard about miak until I saw NC’s review of this movie.I guess it’s fictional , but I haven’t seen or heard about it in Bulgarian folklore ,so yeah…I am pretty confused at the moment-next time I will ask my teacher if she has any idea what that might be but I doubt she knows considering that nobody knows! :D

  • October 27, 2010 at 7:38 am

I was`nt born when this movie had arrived, but i was a fan of Ernest to :D
But im gonna be honest, i think this movie looks kind of fun, a little dumb, but in a funny way. But it some kind of irritated me when i saw the movie review from The Nostalgia Critic, he is annoying, but like-able .. my brother might be the only one here who is agree with the Critic =A=..

But it looks like a lot of fun ;P, some few mistakes.. but cool anyway!
    Good and short review Nerd

    October 27, 2010 at 7:42 am

I preferred this video to the other recent review of it immensely.

The thing I like about your approach to your work, James, is that you manage to include a personal response that gives us an honest impression of a movie. You don’t really mine it for dubious comedy and it’s appreciated.

Also this is the first year I’ve been with Monster Madness for the whole month. It’s been great and I have a list of movies I’m dying to check out. Some of which I’d never even heard of. Great work.

lol, I sure would like some Miak myself. XD

  • Knarkus

    October 27, 2010 at 7:58 am

I saw this movie as a kid, and I never remembered what it was called!
    Thanks, James.

The reason I remember seeing it is because later on the night I watched it, I had a lucid dream about it.
I must have been about 7 years old at the time.

What happened was, I opened my eyes and I couldn’t move my body.
My head was on its side, pointing towards some closets with full-sized doors.

OK, now what? Well, the main troll of this movie slooowly peeks out, that big evil face grinning at me, making eye contact and really conveying the message “I’m going to eat you”.

The whole event lasted about 10 seconds. It’s the scariest thing I’ve experienced I think.

I just had to register to write this comment, so I could finally get some closure. I suppose my story kind of goes with the Monster Madness theme.

Once again, thanks James for this and for your other work, past present and future. All of it is (and will be) sublime.

    October 27, 2010 at 8:03 am

  • Newmi

    October 27, 2010 at 8:06 am

@ Crowbar Thats not totally right. I´m German and I can remember that I saw this film when i was young. As I saw the “Nostalgia Critic”-review it came back to my mind. James has a point by saying this film is mostly recommended for the kids. I sure liked it back then, because after all these years I still recognized it.

It’s 5-methylhexan-2-one. It’s trade name is Methyl Isoamyl Ketone, short: MIAK.
It’s just as simple as that

    October 27, 2010 at 9:49 am

I saw this in theatres as a kid and I totally loved it. The trolls were pretty well-made and freaky, and didn’t seem too hokey. That scene with the girl in her bedroom left me wondering, how does a giant grotesque troll sneak in to a well-lit house without anyone noticing? hehe I guess they have magic.
    RIP Jim Varney.

  • GoldRoger

    October 27, 2010 at 9:55 am

It’s funny how a simple 5 min review can make me change an opinion about a movie.

When the Nostalgia Critic did this movie I thought to myself: “wow, what a lousy piece of crap”

But when I watched this I felt kinda bad for Ernest, for not giving him a real chance and having my opinion based solely on the NC review.

You made it look like it was a very enjoyable, pleasant movie. Thank you James.

and you can’t blame Doug, he’s the Critic after all…

    October 27, 2010 at 10:00 am

I first saw this when I was in about kindergarten or first grade when we rented it. I LOVED it, but it also scared me! I miss the kids films and the costume designs of the ’90s. Now everything’s computer animated…

    October 27, 2010 at 10:06 am

Alright, I’m from Bulgaria, and just to confirm what others before me have said – there’s no such thing as Miak in Bulgaria. For beverages, we have “boza”, which is quite similar to the Miak in appearance, but is not seasonal. If you want I’d love to send you some :D

On another note – Bulgaria’s world famous for its yogurt which, as you probably know, is made from milk. Coincidence? Most likely. Awesome? Totally.

  • Cowboy

    October 27, 2010 at 10:23 am

MAIK may not exist in Bulgaria, but we have a ton of MIAK here in Sweden. I can send you some, if you’d like. Where can I send it to?

  • October 27, 2010 at 10:40 am

Another great review. Just 3 more to go. :(
Can’t wait for the next installment. :)

  • Monstermash

    October 27, 2010 at 10:43 am

MIAK stands for Methyl Isoamyl Ketone (paint thinner / solvent). I have seen this movie about four times as child.

  • October 27, 2010 at 10:43 am

I also did a little review of this movie. It’s my second favorite Ernest movie.

Let me just go on record to say “TO HELL WITH THE NOSTALGIA CRITC”.

You review is way better than his unfair scathing.

Great Job James. You should be canonized. ;-)

  • October 27, 2010 at 11:06 am

Fuck yeah! Ernest Scared Stupid is the shit! I haven’t watched for over ten years last week. I think it aged well. Tried watching it with my roommate’s gf’s boys but they didn’t have the attention span to watch it the whole way through. What ya expect from 4 and 3 year olds. Back when I was younger I thought that Ernest Scared Stupid was the only movie in all of media that takes place in Missouri. Until Supernatural aired I was right.

  • October 27, 2010 at 11:39 am

NOOOOO!!! NOT THIS MOVIE AGAIN!! DOUG MADE A REVIEW OF THIS A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO AND IT’S ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!!

  • SpeedyEric

    October 27, 2010 at 11:43 am

This is weird. Both Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic) and you made videos about “Ernest Scared Stupid.”

I remember first seeing this film when my sister was in a phase of renting the Ernest films at the video store and watching them, and this film is stupidly funny.

Doug looked up the deffinition of miak during his review, and he stated that it’s A rare, slightly antiquated beverage, generally produced in Bulgaria, which may or may not be fictional. Also, I agree that it’s one of the most laugh-out-loud funnyest moments of the film.

Well, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna get myself a nice warm glass of miak.

    I can’t believe

    (1) How many people on here are from Bulgaria.

    and

    (2) How LONG it took to for this movie to start up! Like a full minute of load time. Nothing is wrong with my Internet connection; every other site is fast. You can tell a huge amount of people are watching this movie whenever it’s incredibly slow. Regardless, it was worth the wait!

    P.S. Awesome Review!

P.P.S. Please use my voice submission before Halloween. It’ll make my Halloween.

  • Xilex90

    October 27, 2010 at 12:32 pm

MIAK (Methyl Isoamyl Ketone) is useful as a polymerization solvent for high-solids acrylic resins. The high boiling point of MIAK (144° C) aids in the production of low molecular weight acrylic resins with narrow molecular weight distribution. MIAK has high solvent activity, slow evaporation rate, low density, low surface tension, and a high boiling point. These properties make MIAK a very good solvent for high-solids coatings. Because regulations limit the weight of solvent per gallon of coating, formulators favor the use of low-density solvents that help reduce the VOC content of a coating. MIAK is lower in density than ester, aromatic hydrocarbons, and glycol ether solvents with similar evaporation rates. The low density and high activity of MIAK are significant advantages when formulating low-viscosity, high-solids coatings.

    THIS movie LOOKS SO AWESOME!!!!

I have never had the chance to see this movie, But I LOVE Ernest, he is very stupid but I loved him so much,
His smooth talking mixed with his facial movements and his clumsiness, Totally Loved him, This movie looks like a blast, WAY better than all the Other SHIT you have reviewed this days James :) I really have to find this somewhere and give it a watch,
I agree on the effects, it looks very well made,
The part of the girl in the bed had me laughing so hard, that was totally inappropriate, with the smile he gave her it looks like he was about to rape her or something

Rest In Peace Ernest, We miss you :(

  • angel85

    October 27, 2010 at 1:21 pm

at first I thought that it was kind of stupid that such a common substance as milk could destroy the trolls so easily, but then I realized that the troll originally attacked 200 years ago, before we had grocery stores and refrigerators. So back then as long as the troll stayed clear of dairy farms and women who recently gave birth he was pretty much indestructible.

  • October 27, 2010 at 1:42 pm

I checked out “The Nostalgia Critic’s” review of this movie, and was extremely saddened by his harsh judgement of this movie. It’s great to have a proper film buff do reviews. The movie was never meant to be a “Cinematic Masterpiece.” This movie is supposed to be fun and creepy. It’s a wonderful children’s movie that will stay in our hearts forever.

PS. I think you need to do a review of The Super Mario Brothers Movie.

PPS. I also think that you should review BOTH Mortal Kombat movies, “The Nostalgia Critic” reviewed “Mortal Kombat Armageddon” and kept asking, “What’s with all the fighting?” No, the movie is by no means great, but it is based on A FIGHTING GAME!!!! I understand that he was going for comedy, but he came off as ignorant.

  • BatDan

    October 27, 2010 at 2:18 pm

People seem to forget the Nostalgia Critic’s reviews aren’t serious. He’s supposed to make fun of stuff intended for kids, that’s his shtick.
I don’t see people taking the AVGN seriously, his reviews are meant as jokes.

Oh, I forgot that I’m on the Internet and here irony is dead. Which is why there exist people that take AVGN or Zero Punctuation as gospel and never give the games a chance.

  • October 27, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Too bad the Nostalgia Critic beat you to this one, James, but it’s okay since you have your own style.

  • JayRam

    October 27, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Caught this flick on t.v. when I was about 12. For unknown reasons I still remember it.

The way I see it is, Ernest Scared Stupid is more qualified to be included in the Troll Trilogy than Troll 2. All I’m saying is if you’re gonna name your movie Troll 2, throw some damn trolls in your movie.

I used to LOVE this movie when I was younger. This one and Ernest Saves Christmas. Into the 90′s now. I hope to see TICKS with Seth Green. That movie was so bad… but good and of course Clint Howard. Master of weird low budget characters.

I’m back bitches. Finally a movie i’ve seen, and at a young age too.
    My Comment:
Holy Crap! I remember this movie. I must have watched it when i was like 5. I also remember being scared out of my mind and having nightmares. If i saw it all the way though, i probably wouldn’t have been so scared. I totally forgot the name, but the little wooden statues stayed in my mind forever.
10 stars James, thanks for bringing back old memories.

    October 27, 2010 at 4:22 pm

there are some coincidences too weird to happen by chance! this is one of them!!!
i was just going about my day today and randomly remember this film, i remembered there being a troll and i remembered the guy and i also remembered how much it scared me when i saw it on TV one time. i was even going to post on twitter if anyone could remember what it was called. and then i check the latest monster madness episode and you’ve reviewed it!
sorry, no one probably finds that interesting but this coincidence really freaked me out, especially as i’ve never seen or heard of this film since i first saw it all those years ago!

  • Butch Bitch

    October 27, 2010 at 6:11 pm

To be honest….i’m not an Ernest fan. Jim Varney is a very talented actor, to be sure, and Ernest is an interesting character, but I think the movies could have been better.

  • October 27, 2010 at 6:23 pm

I used to work with some Bulgarians a lot of years back. I can’t believe I missed a golden opportunity to ask about miak!

Ernest was the motherfuckin’ shit in my houshold when I was a kid! My mom liked him, my dad liked him, and I liked him. Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Saves Christmas were my other favorites along with this one.

  • LonelyCrowProductions

    October 27, 2010 at 6:34 pm

I love the Ernest series. I have every one of them on DVD. Plus the commercials you mentioned. It’s too bad that this series wasn’t as highly recieved as many other projects. Watching it as a kid was great. All the slapstick, plus…who couldn’t love Jim Varney?!

I wouldnt say hes ran outta ideals..member this MM is all about CAMP and TCM3 & Ernest Scared Stupid are all about CAMP, jest because you dont like the movies or havent seen them does not make them anyless good.

  • October 27, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I liked the Ernest movies when I was a kid. But I remenber that I did not have many options on Tv, then I had to watch this.

So, here in my country, was like this

  • October 27, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Ernest looks like the kind of guy that would say: “Mommy I done a boom boom” and by the expressions he pulls on his face it suggest he has. James you have done it again, bought a lot of boom thrown it to the fan and covered us all. http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/index.php?ref=65348

Kinda scared to go back and watch it….
I wanna keep my memory of the movie intact

  • October 27, 2010 at 7:47 pm

I know a lot of people like Ernest, but am I the only one who wishes we could see a review of some of the movies that James uses clips from in the intro to each video instead of the actual movie he chooses for the review? Sure all these movies are campy, but with some I can’t help but feel that they aren’t even worth mentioning, I dunno, I guess its just me…

  • angelspawn77

    October 27, 2010 at 7:48 pm

i agree with you there, halloween sucks now!

    great review by the way

  • October 27, 2010 at 8:39 pm

The real question is how Ernest got some Miac.

Even if it is seasonal, it’s from Bulgaria, so you would think it would take at least 3 weeks on super fast shipping for him to get it. Maybe it was at a local grocery store, but in that case you would have probably seen it James.

And of course, I can’t help but say how awesome…ly ironic it is that you and The Nostalgic Critic reviewed a movie within the same month. Now that’s cool, get to see two different opinions at one time.

So does this mean you will review IT?

  • October 27, 2010 at 8:48 pm

Yeah, i knew this would get a good review. Loved it as a kid. Felt pretty deep at the time, when your young and the leaves turn orange and your friends get turned into statues…..

lol i was a big ernest fan too. Hes like a manly pee wee herman.

I remember renting this movie when I was little and actually being scared of it. Now that I look back I wonder why I was even the least bit afraid of it. I could understand being scared to death of the Terminator in Terminator 2, but being afraid of an Ernest film? Man, I was gullible back then.

  • October 27, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Funny to think that the Nostalgia Critic reviewed this a while ago and didn’t like it -_- To be honest i reckon this looks pretty funny ^_^

    October 28, 2010 at 4:44 am

You guys are stupid :) i think what they wanted to say is that the book actually ment the original bulgarian milk (that is the yogurt) and first it was discovered right in Bulgaria and MIAK its some other product its not necesery to come from Bulgaria … Actually i think the film makers did some research cuz they thought ti pretty well . They didnt say yogurt because the book must be very old and the word yogurt wasnt invented yet so they just say bulgarian milk . But the other think that doesnt makes sense its why they use just normal milk ??? Oh what ever it was still pretty good movie for the time . James keep up the good work

Miak = A rare, slightly antiquated beverage, generally produced in Bulgaria, which may or may not be fictional. Miak’s first mainstream appearance was in the film Ernest Scared Stupid.

Hey, I’m from Bulgaria and I know what MIAK is! Just kidding… most probably there’s no such thing.

I asked around and nobody seems to have the slightest clue. I actually went to the oldest person I know to ask him about MIAK. He’s called Gulup which literally means pigeon and, no, it’s not a usual name at all. It actually shows how long ago he was born – 1920 to be precise. He used to prepare people for their driving theory test – that’s how I know him. Funny thing about him – he just couldn’t comprehend why anyone would drive a car as fast as 80 mph. Why? Well, because he had to accelerate an airplane (at Flight School) so it can take off. He used to say that if you slap on a pair of wings on those crazy new German cars they could fly away. Guy has a point!

I said all this just to give you an idea of how archaic this person is. Anyway, I asked him about MIAK and even tried a few possible ways to pronounce such a word in Bulgarian. Guess what? He had never heard of anything like that, no even close. He did bombard me with all sorts of weird rural foods though. That’s a solid enough proof for me – MIAK doesn’t exist.

Sorry James, no way to send you MIAK. However, I could send you a statement, signed by Gulup himself, that reads – no such thing as MIAK exists. :)

I was so surprised to hear “Bulgarian Miak” I was “wtf is that s***” I am from bulgaria, I am 30 years old, I live on village, a little bit, during my school vacations when I was very young boy… but I never EVER heard about MIAK. This product didn’t exist. But is nice advertise anyway… For people that never heard of Bulgaria (most of you probably :( ) it’s small country between Greece, Turkey & Romania. In any ways I feel very funny when I watch this. :) Somehow I don’t feel insulted.

I loved this movie as a kid– my favorite Ernest movie, by far. That bit about “Mother’s Miak” had me laughing for days, and occasionally I still think about it when I write the word ‘milk’.
