first
what’s this? looks cool
Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages is a great flick, super creepy scenery .
Great use of Faust, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligary, and Häxan in the intro. I want to see The Golem Trilogy and especially London After Midnight. Lon Chaney was the sickest!
James, many kudos for mentioning the lost King Kong films..I was hoping they’d make the list and should’ve known they’d be number one with you being a big Kong fan.
There’s speculation if there were two, or even three lost Kong films in Japan.
“Wasei Kingu Kongu” (Japanese King Kong, literally) was released in 1933.
From here we don’t know… these dates could be switched, or even these two could be the same film.
Edo ni Arawareta Kingu Kongu (King Kong appears in Edo) was released in 1934 or 1938 by Zensho. Some sources say one date, others something different.
King Kong Zenkouhen This one only has a 1938 date attached to it from what I can find.
Great job James!
I totally called number 1.
October just keeps getting better and better.
If the films are lost, then how do you have footage of them? Do there just exist fragments of them, is that it?
It’s sad to think these flicks are lost. Even if they might be crap, pretty sad to think all the hard work someone did wont be seen ever again
You screwed up your After Effects comps somehow and most of the “numbers” in your top ten graphics are trimmed improperly
Anyways good video James
yea dude I know how you feel I would love to get my hand on some resident evil games that were scrapped like RE 1.5
No mention of 1931′s Creation, the precursor to King Kong? Even though it was never finished, most of the finished footage has been lost.
Wow. Amazing research, James. Truly, you demonstrate a fan’s dedicated love of the art and concept. I’m happy to learn of these and, like you, hope to one day see them.
Great list and I am so happy you included the lost Kong films (they were running through my head the whole time). I think they are some of the most important Giant Monster movies ever made because they essentially paved they way for Gojira (if we are to believe what we hear about them). It is a shame they are gone.
I think another movie that is worth investigating is Wangmagwi (1967)- its Korean and it DOES still exist, but it has never been released on DVD or VHS ANYWHERE and only has appeared at some film festivals. I’d say its at risk of being lost unless someone steps up and makes a copy of it.
Great surprise
Right on, I love your lists man!
This was amazingly in depth, well researched, and very interesting to watch, already considering the type of horror fan we’re dealing with (we’re watching Monster Madness all this month after all).
Most of us weren’t even aware of some of the well known classic horror movies from the 30s and 40s until Monster Madness elaborated and formerly introduced some of them to us. Now that feels like a warm up to the real lost films from even earlier.
I wonder how many people foolishly discarded some of the film reels in a fire like it was nothing… sort of like what James did at the end of The Exorcist 2 video yesterday.
You know James, with the current rate of your making new videos, you’ll be able to finish that film you talked about in 2 weeks… Seriously James, take it easy…
I had no idea King Kong had a japanese version. That is really something.
To bad it was probably destroyed with an H-Bomb.
who the fuck just leaves “first” as a comment? Did you even watch the video or did you just care about gettting the first fucking comment? Im sure James or any one of us gives two shits if your were the “first” to leave a comment. Normally I wouldnt say shit but its getting old.
Horror films have really went downhill the last 10 years. If its not a remake, its totally unoriginal, or relys, like James said, on gross-out moments or quick and cheap scares. I honestly think the last REAL horror movie that was decent, was the first SAW film. Original, almost no “cheap” scares, and an ending that puts anything Shamaly, or however the hell you spell it, has done to shame.
With lack of music, for some reason, I got scared watching that film because I kept thinking some of those monsters will appear behind me any minute. Well it is near midnight so I guess I should’ve watched this earlier.
Good job James.
@poison_urbz
I got out of bed to go on my computer and leave this comment: What I have to say to you is, “Man, fuck you.” Let nerdyguy64 leave whatever he wants to, including, “first.” It’s a tradition for the first person on there to say “first.” It’s been my experience that people who are upset at others for saying “first” are JEALOUS that they weren’t quick enough to say it. You’re jealous, that’s all there is to it.
yeah…..thats REALLY something to be jealous about. My entire life revolves around coming home from work so i can say first. I better go load my gun and blow my brains out now. ALL im saying is, fucking say something other than FIRST. Its turning into a fucking stupid competition. Its not even about the videos to some people. Its about leaving the first comment, which is fucking annoying. Nothin against the guy whats so ever. Im sure hes just like the rest of us, and thats fine. Maybe Im being a dick, but whatever. This board really doesnt need to be like every other board on the net where people slam eachother, so to the user, im sorry. But to the comment, it still bothers me, as im sure it im not the only one. It should be about the art james is portraying, not about commenting first. Thats all.
And by the way, and i STRESS the playful humor so dont be offended, but if your getting out of bed to leave a fucking comment, maybe YOU need to prioritize a little bit lol. Again….stressssss the jokingness lol.
