I actually think this one is good, but not great, i don’t care about the third one, the best thing about Exorcist 2 is that Linda Blair is nice to look at through out the film, i think her future movies like Chained Heat and Savage Streets are far better!
I feel Exorcist 2 is the definitive “so bad it’s good” film or “unintentional comedy” I f you can’t watch, you can’t watch but I love it. I didn’t know about the re-edit. Which version is the one seen on home video today? It’s the only version I’ve seen. (First on VHS and then DVD.)
Is this one a W.P Blatty novel too? I’ve really liked the third one, and looked forward to see this one, but thanks to you, James and Mike, it’s not gonna happen.
Exorcist 3 is based on Blatty’s novel “Legion”, which is pretty fucking good if there are any readers around.
What a piece of shit that was, jesus that movie is horrible
The only, the only reason for watching this movie is Linda Blair, she looks pretty nice in the movie,
thanks James, great way to start the morning, can’t wait for tomorrow
The image of James Earl Jones dressed as a locust in a soundbooth recording Darth Vader’s dialogue is maybe the funniest thing I have seen this whole year. You have outdone yourself, sir.
I always thought The Exorcist should’ve been a stand-alone product, with no sequels attached. This seems like a case of Hollywood getting over eager because of the massive success of the first film, so they tried throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the second film.
I think I was most impressed with James’ research on this one. I love how he connected the year of its release, to Star Wars. The Imagery of James Earl Jones doing his voice over work in locust costume is priceless.
Agreed MadHitz… Only “sequel” to the Exorcist should be Repossessed. I hope sometime James does a comedic horror movie Monster Madness with spoofs of horror movies like Matinee where they poke fun of the Giant Killer bug movies of the 50s, Repossessed which pokes fun of Exorcist (and stars Linda Blair!), Monster Squad, etc..
LMAO! I’ll say this about “The Exorcist II”, at first, I really hated the film, I mean, it is a complete piece of shit compared to the original, which is fucking LEGENDARY!, but as time went on, I came to appreciate it a little more even though it’s still a pile of elephant shit.
The fact that there was a different director really killed the film. “The Exorcist III” is an AMAZING sequel, and in my opinion stands as the TRUE sequel to the original.
And yeah, Linda Blair was steaming hot in this film!
And dudes, stop asking for “Sleepaway Camp” that film RULES! So does “Madman”
And, as always, thanks a lot James, I’m loving these!
I didn’t know that was Nurse Ratchet, LOL. My condolesnces for reviewing this stinker. Boy this was an awful movie. It’s so bad I couldn’t even explain what it’s about! From the very beginning it just makes no sense. Oh well.
Wow…As a huge fan of The Exorcist, I’ve decided to not watch this movie because I always felt it would ruin it. I’m glad I never have, this movie looks awful! And yeah, Linda Blair does look seductive….weird.
I’ve never seen the Exorcist , but I don’t think it’s the Devil.
what? come on, the Devil wouldn’t waste his time tormenting ONE small family by possessing the body of some random little girl. He would be off carrying out a plan for world domination or something. And all that church mumbo jumbo wouldn’t stop him. he’s way more powerful than that. he’s the lord and master of all that is evil and dark!
so yeah, I think it’s some demon thing, not the Devil.
Dude, kickass review! I mean, Linda Blair was totally hot; and I will never be able to get that image of James Earl Jones, in Locust garb, doing the voice of Darth Vader out of my head. Great job, James! Keep kicking ass!
I was always fascinated by this movie because of the premise that it continued the story that we all watched over and over. Getting some answers not explained in the first movie was also a great reason to watch this – that is going in for a first viewing.
One thing I thought was awesome was that random humming of her voice singing some slow melody near the end of the movie and in some dream sequences. Something about that was just crazily fitting.
I actually watched this back when I was a kid around 8 or 9 years old after watching Exoricist for the first time. I rented it from my video store on VHS and was immensely confused as hell but because I looked at it as part of a series (Just like Rocky and Rocky II and III and IV) I felt I had to finish seeing it. My uncle got me into horror films at a young age and he warned me that Exorcist 2 was different and not a very good movie but back then I felt obligated to watch the complete series (can’t remember if Exorcist 3 had come out). Years later I actually bought it on dvd just so I can have all the Exorcist movies and I rewatched it. There are some good moments but the overal movie sucks. I think the parts with Reagan in the makeup and flashbacks were the best parts.
“Linda Blair agreed to reprise her role of Regan MacNeil for Exorcist II, but refused to wear demon make-up (a double was used for the brief flashback scenes depicting a demonic Regan)”
I actually always thought it was Linda Blair in the make up in Exorcist 2 but I guess it wasn’t. I wonder why she had issues with the makeup after agreeiong to be in the film.
As an Oscar buff, I’d like to point out that “No Country for Old Men” could be considered a horror film. People being chased by a psychotic killer, forced into situations that they don’t want to be in… it certainly qualifies as a horror film, if not a camp or cult horror film.
In fact, William Friedkin, director of “The Exorcist”, says most modern horror films are just gruesome comedies. He consideres movies like “No Country for Old Men” and even “United 93″ to be true horror films because they put you in a place you don’t want to go.
Great review James. I own 1 and 3. I have seen bits and pieces of 2 on TV over the years but never sat down and watched it in it’s entirety, in part due to it’s poor reputation.
pazuzu? you mean the assyrian daemon of the winds? what does that have to do with locusts, witch doctors, exorcisms, and africa? on second thought, just fuck it, i’m downloading this for myself (there’s no way i’m paying for this).
Man, at first i didn’t wanted to see the review because i tough it would be very scary but i like it (Aniway i didnt say i was going to sleep tonight LOL)
I loooved the first onee… but I never saw the second one and thank goodness… i always thought i was missing out…. but im glad i wont be dissappointed… =]
Saw this years ago on showtime or starz or something. I thought ‘what the fuck is this shit?’ got so bored I shut it off after ten minutes or so. Also saw The Exorcist: The Beginning and felt sick that they resorted to a generic CG monster that just ran around screaming and such. You would have to try pretty hard to convince me to see another exorcist movie
I saw the first film… It’s really scary. However I don’t think it’s scarier than Grunge and Ring, seriously i’m talking about the Japanese versions…
Anyway, great job. I actually laughed so hard I almost chock myself when I saw James E. Jones making that voice for Vadar. Gee! Really oweson James!
John Boorman has a very unusual career as director including films like: Deliverance, Zardoz, and Excalibur. Got to love this guys ability to be all over the place.
I actually saw this movie about a year ago because I wanted to watch all the Exorcist movies. I’m glad you ripped this one. The 3rd movie really was better.
I9 remember watchimng the fisr one when the re-edition was made.. And I like it.. This one I watch it on the TV. And yeah It was for me a weird expirience
I saw this one in its entirety a few years ago, I though Linda Blair looked really hot at the end when she’s being all seductive on the bed, it was supposed to be a horror movie, but to be honest instead of scaring me it got me horny at the end xD. The only part that I thought was scary was when the demon was touching Regan’s heart, I completely agree with James that this movie is so damn random.
I didnt see all of the Exorcist 3, but I saw parts, something about Father Damien? he was possessed or something, it didnt make sense to me because I thought he had died, then again I didnt watch it all.
lol, Yeah when I was watching it one time, my dad was like, “why are you watching this one, it sucks and it doesn’t even deal with the exorcist” well im glad I listened and turned the piece of shit off. Oh and I think I was at a scene when a fucking priest was climbing son mountain in Africa, I was already like fuck this shit! But great review, keep it up!
I have then movie because James Earl Jones is in it and that if i get one movie and there is a part 2 and 3 and so on, I have to get the rest to have the set, even if the movies are bad
John Boorman was Warner Brothers’ first choice to direct the first film, but it is true he didn’t like the script. I guess Boorman wanted to just be more sadistic telling Ned Beatty to “SQUEEEEEEEEAL!” at the time since WB was also filming “Deliverance” around 1972.
I did get more just watching the trailer with Ennio Morricone’s Rock version of his score. DAAA DAAA DAAAAAA (WHIP CRACK!)
Haha… oh wow, I had no idea that 2nd Exorcist was like that. No wonder we never hear about it and it is never shown on TV. And, you say it was booed out of theaters? Wow!
The bit about James Earl Jones being in the locust costume recording Vader’s lines was hilarious, and that one stuck in at the end with him going “nooooooooo” had me laughing out loud!
I caught this on Bravo a few years ago, and suffered through it for some reason…I guess I just wanted to torture myself. It is every bit as bad as you say it is: bad script, bad acting, and a plot that makes no fucking sense. At least James Earl Jones is in it; that’s something, I guess.
James Earl Jones should be on a Top 10 Essential Motherfuckers of All Time. That genius alone was pretty much part of every single core moment during most of our nostalgia days!
Being myself a spanish-speaker, For actors this huge is that i always prefer subs over dubbing.
This is a pretty bad sequel. However Exorcist III proves a good sequel could be made. Though it was originally written to be a sequel to Exorcist at all and only included characters from the first film as an after thought.
Still despite how bad this film is… Linda Blair was damn fine to look at at least.
October 14, 2010 at 3:03 am

Very nice review, James! This one cracked me up. lol XP
October 14, 2010 at 3:16 am
Nice reference to Inception. What did you think about that movie, James?
October 14, 2010 at 3:18 am
Oh wow… this looks really horrible. Shame because the first one is probably, well, imo, the scariest movie ever, nothing has come close for me.
October 14, 2010 at 3:22 am
I actually think this one is good, but not great, i don’t care about the third one, the best thing about Exorcist 2 is that Linda Blair is nice to look at through out the film, i think her future movies like Chained Heat and Savage Streets are far better!

By the looks of the reviews clips the movie looks interesting to say the least, I might wanna check this one out
October 14, 2010 at 4:06 am

Cool review, have to say that I never really bothered with any of the sequels. Some movies are prime for one, others should just be left alone.
That being said, I think James should do one horrible review just to spite the “first, good review” guys
October 14, 2010 at 5:25 am
how about a review of “Gore-met, Zombie Chef from Hell”?
When talking shitty movies, that one is the shittiest of ‘em all

love the Vader scene

So Reagan wasn’t really possessed by the devil after all? Didn’t see that one coming. Love the review.
1977. Getting closer to the 80s.

I don’t do good with horror so I doubt I will be able to watch this review if Exorcist 2 has any scary scenes I know you would likely show.
October 14, 2010 at 9:07 am

I caught this on Bravo a few years ago, and suffered through it for some reason…I guess I just wanted to torture myself. It is every bit as bad as you say it is: bad script, bad acting, and a plot that makes no fucking sense. At least James Earl Jones is in it; that’s something, I guess.

James Earl Jones voiced Darth Vader while wearing the locust costume.

In fairness James, ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘No Country for Old Men’ DO have a lot of blood, dead bodies, and explosions….

This creeps me out just from the 3 or 4 clips from the original

All I saw was the original Exorcist (that messy Director’s Cut) and Exorcist III.
They were decent. You had balls to watch the second.

Now I can knock another futurama reference off the list: Pazuzu the gargoyle.
Thanks guys!

LOL nice easter egg at the very end.
I’m glad you mentioned Exorcist III…it has one of the scariest scenes I’ve ever seen. Looking forward to a future review of that one.

I liked t his film, mainly for adult Regan and James Earl Jones
Funny to think he’d be recording Star Wars voiceovers while in the locust outfit!

this is terrible i rather watch the prequel than this the prequel to the first exorcist

Thank you. Now I won’t see Darth Vader the same way anymore.
