    I saw this pop up while watching Monster Madness… for the fact that Toukz says “one of your best to date” I’m quite excited.

    Now only if GameTrailers would stop saying it’s one minute long and keep going “Video buffering” – playing ” Video buffering” 20 times a second.

    BTW, is this the halloween special? Or is the special gonna be a 2-parter? Like “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Atari’s Texas Chainsaw massacre” and “Halloween” for Atari, “Dracula Games” and “Frankenstein Games”? Or, is it gonna be Castlevania-thon ?
    I mean, it is really unsatisfying to have only one AVGN halloween special…

    Alright, after seeing this.. I’m not sure what anyone could say about it negatively. It literally has it all.

    I’ve always liked the fact that James has fun with his reviews but puts care into every detail at the same time. The fact that he actually gives CORRECT insight and does his research.

    But a lot of people simply like his swearing. Hell, it’s been copied in every knock-off reviewer that is out there. This alone does not a good video make.

    I’m not offended by the swearing at all. I swear like a sailer at times. I don’t, however, find it fall on the floor funny and a lot of times makes me raise an eyebrow. There are times though that he starts on a tirade that seems natural instead of forced and there to be there and THIS is when it’s hilarious.

    This video had both parts in equal dosage that added up to supreme awesomeness. Great stuff.

    Lots of hilarious moments in this. The ending shot was exactly the same angle on the head from the first Jekyll video. Taking the game out from the Nintoaster several times for suspense worked on many levels. Even after Hyde Nerd said Robert Louis Stevenson ruined his life, he seemed to march off to the left in a hilarious fashion. Very small things that just add up many times over.

    The revelation / epiphany at the end explaining the game being perfect probably caught everyone off guard with how detailed and consistently funny it was because from a certain point of view it really has some truth to it.

    I knew it was going to be this game all along. I just wish at the end, he destroys it. But he just ends it saying it fucking sucks. It did go into greater detail this time of course I expected that, but I expected him to destroy the game… or bury it. Why didn’t he? “Smash it!     I’ve been waiting a long time for you to revisit Jekyll and Hyde. The original was really ,really poorly done. You don’t die “for no reason”, and I’m glad this new review finally addresses that fact. Still, this was a bit heavy on the filler and I was hoping you’d show the two different endings. Oh well. Better luck next time.

    This was absolutely amazing! This is the way it had to be. I think the long explanation had a good point to it, but the sad part is that’s not what Soho was going for, so it’s all lost. I loved this video, and I actually enjoy playing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde…in a weird masochist kind of way though.

    EPIC JOB, I can tell you really put your heart into this one, I loved the psychology at the end so much, I mean that really took some original thinking. This is by far one of your best pieces you’ve done. And the Billy Powns line was one of the funniest things you’ve ever said, bravo.

    But this game looks kinda interesting… reminds of the silent hill scheme somehow.
    Anyway, Mr. Rolfe: Your Videos (and especially Episodes like this one) are so well made, that viewing them is to transcent body and time and entering a realm of total entertainment.

    Cool review, just played the game and beat a few levels, I noticed the bombs won’t hurt you if you just keep walking and don’t jump or turn, and you have to pay the singing lady coins to let you by. The manual does give a reason for each of the characters being angry, but mostly it’s not personal, they are just crabby. Once you get the hang of the game it’s not that bad, it is playable.

    Good episode James. Back in your last episode when you said you had another game you were thinking about, I honestly thought you were talking about Superman 64. You went over it, but mostly only the beginning, after that there are different missions if I recall where you’re in a town or something, you missed quite a bit from that game and there is also a multiplayer mode on superman which I used to play with my cousins at times.

    You know from where I unterstand it’s fake. Nobody leave full bottle of wiskey on the edge of the couch. It just fucking crazy, who do what. Really? Full bottle? Full fucking bottle, just waiting to be broken and spill all over the floor. It is maddnes I tell you. It was the most terrible part of this video, maybe all your videos. It was scary to watch. Will this bottle broke or not? Dude, if I have such a bottle of wiskey, first thing I am going to do, is bottle off this wiskey into plastic tare. And if it will be a beer(I mean good european beer, not that shit you drinking. There is a good phrase about american beer: American beer is like having sex in a boat. It’s fucking close to water.) I save it like my own child. Its just blows my mind. Who do that? Nobody, that’s who. You are puting drinking a lot in your videos, but you just have shown, that you have no fucking clue how the real men drinks and that it means to so many people. Here in eastern europe it is like a religion, like a ritual or call it what ever you want. You should do an euro trip some day to taste some german or cezch or lithuanian beer for once.     Btw: To save bandwith: you should cut down the resolution of the title image in this post. It’s scaled down but the source image is still huge, forcing all visitors to download the full image.

    I thoroughly agree with Gavie on the whole image needing to be legitimately shrunken issue. To make matters worse, the way the image was scaled through HTML actually distorts the aspect ratio of the image too. You certainly don’t have to use it, but I scaled the image down to 600×400, and it’s less than an eleventh the size of the full image here.

    I thought I would mention that there’s a new game for Jekyll and Hyde, and trust me, it isn’t any better than this piece of shit. At least the old one had age to blame, before standards were set. These days you expect modern standards, and even most bad games meet them.

    By new I actually mean new, September or so of 2010. I recently put up a written review for it on IGN.(And apparently I was the only guy in the world that could stand it long enough to do it, not even IGN reviewed this pigshit of a game.) The 2010 Jekyll and Hyde game.

    It’s so bad they didn’t even put up the box cover image for the game. There’s just blank “Box art not available” pictures. That alone is a legendary find…

    Out of several dozen or so written reviews, this was the only one I bickered so much at the start of. It was the worst modern game I ever touched and this game PISSED ME OFF to no end. It’s only written, but you can still read about why this game is garbage, or go get it yourself and see. I only posted this because it seemed relevant being a Jekyll and Hyde game, which no one seems to know about or realize exists, and worst of all, it’s NEW, but still really fucking bad.

    Great job, James! I laughed when you delayed putting the cartridge into the Nintoaster several times, and the pissing statue and shitting bird says it all. I’d never thought I would see a skeleton flipping the bird, let alone Robert Louis Stevenson’s . But my favorite part was the whole philosophical speech at the end, not only did it somehow make sense, but it was true to the theme of the game and novel.

    I’m really glad you did take time out to make this video, James. I was just sitting there during the last couple minutes going, “Wait for it, waiiiiiiiit for it…” and then came the “It’s shit,” just like I knew it would. And I still laughed my ass off- your waxing happy philosophy followed by that 180 about did me in, even though I knew it was coming.

    These aren’t unique comments: The skeleton had me rolling, though it did actually surprise me that you didn’t beat R. L. into powder with that nifty cane.     Your original review was actually one of my favorite videos of yours. For me, the whole joke and humor out of it is that you really don’t even talk about the game or review it at all. You just rant about how horrible it is for the whole 7 minutes or so! It’s like you could just edit the video a little to make it so you’re talking about another bad game, for example Shaq Fu. It was comedy GOLD. I haven’t watched this version yet, but believe me, I’m glad you’re doing it justice now, this game deserves TWO reviews! 🙂 (Though it’s not all that bad IMHO)

    Even though I knew it was going to be this game, THIS WAS SO FULL OF EPIC AWESOMENESS!!!! The twist ending where you figure it’s the best game ever made left me in shock! This is what the definition of AVGN is!!! Sure, other episodes have more epicness, but this is THE VERY DEFINTION OF AVGN! It’s not about fight scenes, more games, special effects, crossovers….it’s about horrible games! And how to review them in the most unexpected matter of all time!!!     I Still know a game for NES with worse controls. I had to make sure to get the game guide just to be able to move the player icon in it. Not sure if you have it though and I do like the Music in it. The Game is AirWolf for NES.

    The Attempt to force a lesson about not allowing Evil to progress past good was pathetic. But this was a much more in depth review of one of the near worst games ever to defile any Game console. I just think AirWolf might be a bit worse when it comes to control. Don’t forget its based off a Hit TV series.

    Honestly, I couldn’t imagine this review taking more than 5-10 mins. And I too have suffered from this horrible game, but sadly, I paid full retail for it, when it first came out. 🙁 It’s probably the only NES game I never beat, but really, never tried that hard to.

    Thank you very much for doing that horrible abomination the justice it truly deserved, and making me laugh the whole freaking time. 🙂

    Classic philosophizing by reading too much into a bad game! Excellent ending revelation that “Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” doesn’t allow you to attack/kill/ or have fun while playing, in that respect teaches a moral lesson.

    Learning is never supposed to be fun, right? Isn’t that what they teach you in high school?

    This is an amazing episode! I don’t know what everyone’s problem is (on Gametrailers) saying your older reviews are better, you’re losing your touch etc etc because this is an evolution of what you’ve been doing. A HUGE EVOLUTION!

    That was an epic speech at the end, the same kind of philosophical wishful thinking I’d conjure up to mask the hatred for a shitty game. The writing for your newer episodes have become more clever.

    My favourite line is “is Jesus going to get off the cross and start beating him with it?” LOL

    Good video James, but let me say something about a previous comment…

    You said, “Don’t worry, i’ve got enough games and I’ve got a script for the movie to be made.” We’ve all seen our favorite guys come and go, RPGworldcomic, homestarrunner, askaninja guy, etc. We see you slowing down and doing past games. Not only that, but we see a ring on your finger too. You’re about 30 now, and I don’t see you doing AVGN past 35. Although you’ve got like a thousand games with you, you’ll never get to them all and personally, I don’t think you’ll even get to review much past 10% of them all. We all know that you’re heading for bigger and better one day, and we’re all just waiting for it to happen. I guess that if there is an AVGN movie, it will boost you to your next goal to directing or acting in non-AVGN stuff.

    We all love your stuff and whatever you make, we’ll be here to watch it =-)

    I had another theory around this game. The towns people know that Jekyll can turn into a monster and so wish to kill him, or at least they make him feel unwelcomed. In which he gets angry/stressed out about it and turns into this monster.

    Yet again, your anger gives entertainment to us all. Except for the beginning where I actually felt a little sorry for you. Your acting skills are… um.. getting there? :p

    I have always loved Project Gutenberg and always support literacy. 🙂 Now I can read the book on my netbook. And I’m sure it’ll be much more fun and enlightening than that foul “game”.

    As for The Nerd not finishing the game, why not? Doesn’t The Nerd have the right to exercise the preservation of his own sanity and tolerance? Some “fans” ask too much of him. Maybe some of those same “fans” should slap together their own short film and see if they can do better. When the main action of the character in the game is WALKING there will be narrative sidetrips employed.

    The only weak spot was the exhuming of Robert Louis Stevenson’s skeleton. I was hoping for better dialog for the character other than a simple “Fuck you!” or “I am the devil!” Then again, corpses in general, much less a fully decayed skeleton, aren’t too literate anyway.

    As for The Nerd’s “blackface” it was more of a throwback to early practical makeup effects rather than accusers exaggeratedly claiming that he used copious amounts of charcoal black to the point of being “politically incorrect” (“Bamboozled’ was a shitty “message movie”, BTW). Back then there wasn’t much in the way of latex applique or other makeup effects along the lines of Chris Walas or the late Stan Winston. The effects were much more practical and relied more on low lighting while strategic makeup exaggerated certain features of the human face.

    Even my own use of makeup and costuming in general would be considered high-tech back then.

    I liked the video. It isn’t his best but its good for now. The last thing I want to see again is another skeleton of an author that has dialogue which is much better written and executed for a David Mamet film or play.

    So,the Halloween episode was GREAT this year! I had no idea the game was that much BS! Not only do you have pretty much no way to defend yourself as Jekyll, but the side of the coin that is actually somewhat fun and feels like a game is NOT what you are supposed to want to do, and if you get too far at that point, you die! Yeah, really… playing as Hyde, while more fun, just makes extra work! Ridiculous!

    That was awesome when you busted out the hard liquor and started getting “drunk”… then when you passed out and appeared as Hyde that freaked me out, man! 😀 I was worrying for your health when you went on about that speech about how the game can help improves the human condition, but then I was reassured and busted out laughing when you said “Or you could just say it fuckin’ sucks!” Great! 😀

    Oh, and the bit with you in the graveyard with the “author’s body” was great! He proclaimed he was the Devil, flipped you off and told you to go play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! Hilarious! 😀 😀 😀

    Mike’s illustrations are awesome.

    I don’t think this story is an accurate depiction of humyn duality — at least not in Jungian terms. Duality is about persona and shadow, id and ego, assertive and receptive, extroversion and introversion, private contemplation and public emotion, and all related equasions that arise from the reconciliation of these dualities. Whether one is under the influence of persona or shadow, id or ego, they still retain free will. Therefore, good and evil are in the choices we make, not the circuitry of our psyche (otherwise, no one would be responsible for their actions since we’d all be pre-programmed automatons).

    Or to paraphrase Kuato: “You are what you do. A man is defined by his actions…not his psychometric profile.”

    I later learned that there’s a better alternate ending, but COME ON! As long as it takes to beat, you should see more than a quick image of the wedding chapel and fade to black…

    I know exactly how the Nerd was feeling at the beginning of this episode. It’s like going back the very place where you did your first job after being laid-off of your current job, and you feel embarassed about it, but you have to do it for the paycheck.

    I was one of the guilty ones who played Jekyll/Hyde after seeing Episode 2 of AVGN for the first time a little over a year ago. Shortly before this video came out, I once again played a little of the game, and I tried my best not to get hit as Jekyll, and I guest I made it to the middle of the 2nd level. …Oh, and he DOES look like Two-Face. =P

    James, I love the hold up you performed before you started playing the “game.”

    Some of the creatures of the Hyde gameplay look like kids in Halloween masks.

    11:02- I call that 20 different flavors of pathetic.

    The moment between 11:57 and 12:30 MUST be included in this year’s top Nerd moments, because it always cracks me up, including the Jesus part.

    I love the close up in the closing shot of this episode. Just as perfect as the closing shot of the regular Jekyll/Hyde episode.

    Finally got around to reading the classic book. I must say your comparison to the book via the games crappyness and good half being the part where you kill shit is surprisingly well founded. If the developers had done that on purpose I would applaud them despite the fact that the game play is shit terrible.

    Honestly, if the designers of this game actually intended for the game to be as thought provoking as James describes at the end of this video, it would have been the most ambitious game of it’s time. However, if we could actually track down the designers I’m sure they would say, we made a game that would capitalize on the name recognition of Dr. Jekyell and Mr. Hyde the story and that parents would buy in the hopes it might get their kids to pick up a book. Otherwise this game is shit.

    I know I’m posting this way late, but i felt it was needed. Now I don’t know if you actually think the game is bad or really don’t get the concept of the cane, but let me explain it. I actually really like this game know, and here is how it works. If you use the cane, you don’t even have to attempted to hit anyone, but just sticking it out make the people pissed at you. Just don’t press the cane and you will at least by continuesly going right will find yourself at level 2.5-3 before dieing. The bomb man wont hurt you with his bombs even if you stand right on top of it, and people won’t run and hurt you like assholes. Billy Pones and the spiders will still hurt you though, but not signicant enough to get to level three before you turn into Mr. Hyde. So basically using the cane punishes you by having the towns people kill you. The End.

    Come to think of it, if it wasn’t for this horrible game, we wouldn’t have an AVGN. That is the one good thing this game has brought the world.

    When I played it and saw the fountains I figured the piss would kill you too. Surprised me when it didn’t.

    Allow me to address two of your complaints.
    First, the ‘health’ you are referring to is Jekyll’s mood – the real ‘health’ bar is above it. Some obstacles damage mood but not health, e.g. the terrible singing. The bomb still takes away most of both, though.
    Second, I’d be pretty pissed off too if someone tried to bludgeon me with a cane. You may want to stop doing that. =)

    This game doesen’t seem nearly as bad as ANY of the Action 52 games. At least the game is functional!

    well i played Dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde for the NES in my Emulator.

    this game really really sucks. i mean i played it to the 4th stage. and there it is just hopeless. YOU DIE INSTANT IF YOU MOVE A FEW STEPS!
    and, what the AVGN didn’t mentioned.. if you play the role of hyde long enough and you shut the game off a lil time later.

    you get the damn effect in your eyes that the whole screen scrolls from right to left. this just sucks ass, agh.
    not recommened to play this game, it is even bad for the eyesight o.O

    You know, I finally chalked it up to buying this game for $3.95 at a local shop, knowing how God Awful it was, just so I could say I own a clean copy of it. The sheer infamy of this disaster actually makes tracking a good copy down HARD! Now that’s saying something. Playing it for the first time you ask? I am SHOCKED that this EVER made it to shelves for the NES. I could however, understand if this was released on FLOPPY DISK for the Apple II or something, but no. Bottom Line: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the NES makes The Oregon Trail for the Apple II feel like fucking Super C.

    BWA HA HA HA!! I love how you try to hit the game with the cane and it doesn’t work; then you try to hit the skeleton with the cane and it doesn’t work…THE CANE IS FUCKING USELESS!! Maybe you should have hit a bee or something so people would have gotten the joke a little easier. :/

    Plus, I loved your epiphany at the end. It actually makes a ton of sense, and could very well have been the driving idea behind the design of the game…or the game just fucking sucks and that’s all there is to it. 😛
