Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is one spectacular movie, and I particularly love the performances, especially Brolin’s faux Pee-Wee. Everyone is so bizarre and enthusiastic that the whole production is a joy.

Big Top Pee Wee suffered partly because they had him making out with someone. That really broke the character.

    ‘Wild and Wacky’ ?

    More like; annoying as hell.

I will give his movies a try this weekend. I never got the fact that you are so fond of his movies…

They feel too much like The Cat in the Hat shit to me.

    Anyway.

    Oh hi Mark!

Pee Wee’s the man. The fact that he came back into the limelight rules, what with his numerous talk show appearances, going to the Sturgis Biker Rally this year and his announcement of doing a show on Broadway is awesome.

  • September 17, 2010 at 2:13 pm

    Great review, man.

Large Marge was so unbelievably scary to me as a kid. I can’t really explain it. As an adult, it’s still a surprising moment – but also just really funny. But back then it terrified me.

  • September 17, 2010 at 2:24 pm

It’s great you mentioned Tim Burton’s Vincent. It is my favorite short movie ever.

Hey James – if you didn’t know, it looks like a new Pee-Wee Herman film is coming. There’s been rumors for years, but with Judd Apatow behind it looks like it will really happen now.

    http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/01/paul-reubens-on-pee-wee-hermans-next-big-adventure-a-new-movie/

I’m glad, as Paul Reubens is a really talented comedian. His career didn’t deserve to go into the toilet for so long.

I’ve never seen this film and to be honest – after watching your review I want to stay as far away from it as humanly possible. Seriously, to me PeeWee looks like Mr Bean’s retarded brother.

This is easily the most unexpectedly good movie ever made. By any logic it should never have worked but it’s one of my favorite movies of all time, as if saying “Screw logic! We’ve got everything!”

  • Syph

    @M3n747

Actually, Mr. Bean didn’t come around until the 90’s so if anything Atkinson copied Reubens’ character.

I don’t think you have done it but please review The Labyrinth. I love this movie and have seen it more times then I can count. I cant wait to share it with my niece and nephew.

  • September 18, 2010 at 1:28 am

  • September 18, 2010 at 4:03 am

How I HATE this movie! It’s one of the worst and most embarrassingly childish movies I have ever seen! This is an abomination and should never have been made in the first place! This movie is so awful that it’s worthy of a Nostalgia Critic review!

James you just scored another 5000 points in my book with that review. I totally remember the Pee-Wee era. Reading over these comments I’m so glad to find out that I wasn’t that only kid that literally shit their pants from the Large Marge scene….It honestly scarred me. Looking back at it a few years ago I had a good laugh over it all. Anywho Pee-Wee rocked, from his show, to his movies, to all of his cameo appearences. My favorite would have to be when he is getting arrested in Cheech and Chong and he is going off the handle. First time I ever heard him drop F bombs. Awesome review, thanks.

  • September 18, 2010 at 6:15 am

That sprinkler was actually a Willi the Waterbug, I had one of those growing up.

  • September 18, 2010 at 6:32 am

Thanks for the link Steven, I can see why this didn’t make the cut though, and I kinda like how before he was just some random weird guy. Also, what’s up with all the hate from people here? Childish? Obviously these people don’t understand that it HAS to be childish. That’s what Pee-wee is all about. You really have to understand the concept to understand the appeal I suppose.

After watching this review I decided to watch the movie myself (for the first time in about 17 years or so!). I just finished it. It’s funny, as a kid I remember really disliking this movie… a lot. It was just too much I guess – too weird and creepily childish. Watching it now, I loved it! It was fuckin’ hysterical chaos from beginning to end! My, how tastes change. There are lots of jokes and references that 8-year-olds don’t readily notice or know much about. Other movies like The Muppet Movie, Ninja Turtles, and some other perceived “kid’s movies” from that era are like that.

  • stivillword

    September 19, 2010 at 8:21 pm

You’re absolutely right; this movie can only get better with age. I can think a lot of things I loved as a kid that didn’t age so well but this Pee Wee’s Big adventure is still just as good (if not better than) when I first saw it.

When I started watching the review, I was wondering when/if you’d comment on the Large Marge scene, which is also still creepy as fuck to me.

I always enjoy reading your reviews, James; it’s always nice to see your take on familiar titles, as well ones that are less known to me.

    Keep them coming.

Just like it’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World and a Christmas Story, this movie made zero impact on international markets. It was never aired on TV or released on VHS or DVD in the Netherlands. The character is completely unfamiliar to me and even though he is referenced in popular media (Family Guy for example) we simply miss the joke completely or assume it’s original.

  • Syph

    September 20, 2010 at 8:03 pm

No, I think most would agree that Goonies is a classic. It’s simple and predictable but it really holds up well and makes you feel like a kid again when you watch it.

    September 21, 2010 at 8:23 am

Thanks for the review on this James. You brought up some things I never knew before. For one, I didn’t know this was a Tim Burton movie or that Paul Rubens did the Pee-Wee act before the tv show, and I thought the movie came about because of the show, not the other way around!

    The more you know! 😀

  • naptha

    September 21, 2010 at 5:20 pm

That Large Marge scene always made me think of the end of “UHF”. You know? Philo?

  • September 23, 2010 at 7:45 pm

This movie is a frigin classic, I grew up watching this movie and still quote it to this very day. The show I remember loving but somehow I thought the show came out before the movie…I had no concept of time back then…or now lol. There were a lot of terrifying scenes in this movie that gave me nightmares back then…like you said, Large Marge in the truck and the scariest part for me (not sure why) was when Pee Wee first discovered his bike was stolen and the clown statue he had chained it to had this evil smile and laugh, that scared the hell outta me. Yet somehow, I kept coming back.

I wish they’d make more movies like this, just so random and hilarious. It doesn’t make much sense at times but that’s what makes it so funny. My favorite scene would have to be when he breaks into Warner Bros studio and gets his bike back (the chase scene). Otherwise, one of the funniest scenes is when he meets the bum on the train and Simone’s boyfriend Andy LOL.

Pee-wee, Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure in an adult theater in Sarasota, Florida. The arrest set off a chain reaction of national media attention that changed the general public’s view of Reubens and Pee-wee.

    Did this actually happen?

Still, this question will always remain unanswered in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Who is Amazing Larry? What does he do that makes him amazing? I always wanted to think that Amazing Larry was a homeless small town local magician that has a problem with hallucinogens, STD’s, and the local economy.

  • November 17, 2010 at 12:28 pm

This is probably one of the greatest movies ever! I remember I had trouble sleeping for several nights after seeing this moive, because Large Marge kept popping into my head. That’s probably one of the scariest scenes in a movie ever, because it was so unexpected.

  • rebelnyell

    November 18, 2010 at 3:31 pm

if you have the dvd version and watch the bonus features/deleted scenes you will know who amazing larry is. Pee Wee initially meets him in the magic shop. There amazing larry shows him some tricks. I don’t recall how this progresses but eventually Pee Wee suggests that he gets a haircut like a teen punk rocker seen though the window/door of the shop. Initially Amazing Larry has just a normal looking haircut that is why it is pretty funny when you see him later in the movie during the scene shown.
