Halloween starts early on Cinemassacre! Here’s a tribute to MonsterVision, a late night TV monster movie marathon from the 90′s.
Halloween starts early on Cinemassacre! Here’s a tribute to MonsterVision, a late night TV monster movie marathon from the 90′s.
Cool video, it’s pretty impressive that MonsterVision lasted all the way up to 2000 really. Also neat to see the likely origin of the beloved MOOOOONSTER MADNESS!
Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, Wikipedia says ol’ Joe Bob is “planning on hosting a similar program on the yet-to-be-launched network HorrorNet.” We can only hope, I guess.
I’m jealous I didn’t have TNT as a kid(Canadian cable provider). Seeing this reminded me of the show “Hilarious House of Frightenstien”. Have you heard of it? Vincent Price was in it. Would be totally awesome to see some kind of Cinemassacre homage to Monster Mashups like that.
Yup, I’m a Canuck, as well, and like strint519 above me, didn’t get TNT…
Hilarious House of Frightenstein scared the living SHIT out of me when I was a wee lad. It had Dracula, Wolfman, Igor, Mummies, Frankenstein (well, sorta) and a potion-brewing witch.. — as well as MOTHER FUCKING VINCENT PRICE dropping us creepy poems betwixt segments!!! — It was insanely scary considering it’s target audience. Honestly..
What a show, and it was on early, early Saturday/Sunday mornings (later syndicated daily) whilst the parents were still sleeping off a hangover.
Wonderful show. Wish it had more of a following. It would have been right up your alley, James. I hope you’ve heard of it, or would research it, and will do a mashup on it, too. A gem waiting to be mined…
Ahhh monster vision, when I was 5 I used to watch it alot with my dad whenever we foudn soemthign good on those nights when it was on, I remember every saturday would b Godzilla marathons with the theme song from Blue Oyster Cult lol, ahhh the good old days, when there were black an white moves on the ari more, Rudy An GoGo’s world famous cartoon show was on TNT, and when things were better on the air without as much Fcc rcap like nowadays.
I dont remember the first monster vision that well.. but i do remember USAs “Up All Night” hosted by Rhanda sheer or gilbert godfrey. They would show 2 “boob” flicks (without the boobs ofcorse) and then one, maybe two REALLY bad horror movies. aah.. good times.
I remember hearing about this, but at the time, I was a chicken sh*t with any horror movie except the much older ones. I does suck though, if it was on, sometimes I would even plan on watching that. Well, here is to Netflix though.
Hey James, This is awesome! Are you going to upload this to Youtube? Please?
ahhhh monster vision, brings me right back to my 8th grade year…when life was simpler and much more fun. Long before the shitty fucking walmart job and all the drama of getting older. Just a dark room, a tv, a me hiding in the corner under a blanket like a bitch lol. Good times…good times.
Until this video, I didn’t know about MonsterVision, but I was already familiar with Penn and Teller and Joe Briggs. And Bob Denver, haha, my mom LOVES Gilligan’s Island.
I find it stupid that MonsterVision had to censor those contemporary horror films. It’s not just that I don’t believe in censorship, but didn’t these movies air at 10 to midnight? Don’t channels usually stop censoring stuff at those hours? I know Comedy Central does, but then again I don’t think other channels do. Either way, it’s still fucking ridiculous.
Plus, with the Internet and whatnot today, there doesn’t seem to be a real NEED for a new MonsterVision, but it sure would be hella nice.
I grew up with Elvira’s Movie Macabre, because of my moms love for her, I live in Northern Ireland and we never got Monster Vision,I’m 16 and still love watching the VHS tapes my mom recorded of Elvira, been watching them since I was 3 or 4, can’t wait to see Movie Macabre get a re-release this fall!
I really hope James reviews Elvira, Oh and the Rocky Horror Picture Show!
MOOOOOOONNNSSTTEEER MADDDNESSS so psyched…..
If Halloween starts early can MOOOOOONNNNNNNSTEERRR MAAAAAADDDNNEESSSSS start early too?
I remember depending on TV to see all the movies I wanted to watch. I was only allowed one trip to the video store every week and I usually picked out an NES game instead of a movie cause it had to last me all weekend. If I got a movie I would watch it about 3 times and then be bored the rest of the weekend. I would do the very same thing you talked about in this video. Get the channel choices out of the sunday paper and see what movies were going to be on. I have to say my biggest source for movies was WPIX out of New York City. Thats where I saw Clash of the Titans, Godzilla, Jason and the Argonauts, etc. The day they aired King Kong Vs Godzilla was such a happy day. When I saw it in the paper I shit myself. You kids today have it so easy!
Very Great, I love MonsterVision, i also loved USA Up All Night with there hosts Rhonda Shear and Gilbert Godfried, it was fun watching those b movies on the weekends with those hosts even though the movies were edited, but they still had certain type of appeal like hot babes in sexy lingerie, above all those were the glory days of TV, but sadly it all ended in 1999 and TV for every channel like USA, TNT, A&E AMC, SCi-FI and more channels went down the shitter i missed what they had on in the 80′s & 90′s, now days they are showing incoherent diarrhea brown stained underwear of life, The best source of entertainment today is internet (like AVGN Show), Video Games are still fun, mocking any stupid shit out there in Hollywood today and being creative of what you want to do!
The best part about MOOOOONSTEERRRRRRRR MAAAAAAAAAAADNESSSSSSSS is that you don’t censor the gore, James.
Ya know what would be cool? If James hosted his own Monstervision type thing. Where he would stream some old Horror movies on ustream. Ahhh that would be great.
Great tribute! I didn’t specifically remember MonsterVision as a program, but I remember watching all those great old monster movies when I was a kid, especially on the independent UHF stations. Before my family got a VCR, I would go to the library and borrow the kids’ novelizations of classic horror films like “Frankenstein meets the Wolfman.” What a trip down memory lane!
for some reason, I expected a break from Monster Madness this year. REALLY good to hear it’s still on!
Holy Shit! I remember MONSTER Vision! I loved that part of my Saturday nights growing up. I would never be able to stay up for all of it but I woke up early back then so I was always able to catch the tail end of the last movie. Those were some good times.
James, that was cool. You said networks would never produce a MonsterVision-esque show again? I think you should host your own MonsterVision every Saturday for one month. That’d be awesome!
awesome video. james pays homage and respect to all the best things in life
Hey James,
I emailed the link to this to Joe Bob Briggs, I’m sure he’ll appreciate your good taste.
October is the best month, and Halloween is the best holiday!
I totally agree with JayRam!! It would be amazing if you did
