Mike Nelson Interview

Mike Nelson was the head writer and host of Mystery Science Theater 3000. He is now part of the online hilarious movie mocking site Rifftrax. The people at Rifftrax were very nice reaching out to me and setting up this phone interview with the man himself. Also, special thanks to Matt Conant for helping me figure out how to record a phone call via Skype.

Check out Rifftrax.com for more info.

I loved MST3K (have a bunch of the DVDs. Mike is hilarious, I haven’t listened to too many rifftrax, but I plan on it.

  6. UnholyMephistophelesProductions says:

    sweet i love MST3K

  7. maikii says:

I absolutely love MST3K, my favorite show of all time. The guys at Best brains are the funniest people ever. Rifftrax on the other hand… They just lost their touch, unfortunately.

  8. MissPrettyKitty says:

I didn’t knwo the Nerd was into MST3K and/or Rifftrax. I’m so glad he did this interview! Hey Nerd, most of your fans are into MST3K and Rifftrax! So keep it coming!

  9. BoredAndCynical says:

MST3K AND THE AVGN? MY BRAIN JUST EXPLODED

  10. windowlicker says:

OH YES… I’ve always wanted to see/hear this combination of people.

I’d love to see James commentary alongside Mike Nelson in a Rifftrax, as many other celebrities and Internet personalities have. Although that would be up to James and his comedic style.

@maikii: I disagree about Mike/Kevin/Bill losing their touch. Their MST3K stuff is classic genius, but their newer Riffing is still a ton of laughs… Trying to compare them is beside the point.

  11. LisVender says:

Cool! I had a hunch that there was some Mike Nelson influence behind the Angry Video Game Nerd. I loved MST3K, and this was a fun and informative interview. Great work, James.

  12. Tenchuu says:

NIce interview, pretty good quality too for a phone interview

  13. Zeddemore says:

Isn’t that guy who is sitting next to James from the Friday Night Cranks, that airs on YouTube?

  14. Squidward says:

Haha sweet video James :p. btw you think those combos are hard? go try SVC CHAOS SNK vs CAPCOM. Even better do a AVGN review on it it will leave you in blisters lol.

  15. Squidward says:

wait that was for you street fighter 4 vid my bad lol..

  16. strint519 says:

Freakin’ sweet vid today. Totally unexpected! Love coming home from work and finding updates on the site.

  17. Seraphaw says:

These guys over at Rifftrax are so funny, I have watch almost every single riff they have made and you get ALOT of entertainment for your money.

    Thanks for the interview, James.

  18. xdeathknightx says:

That’s the only thing I am sad about, that MST3K never made it over here to the Netherlands. Do try to catch some rifftrax

  19. Optics says:

Uh oh – better remove that “the room” poster before John from the room movie website forces you to take it down! Just ask the NC how that went!

  20. Butch Bitch says:

When I saw the picture on the site, I was like “Mike Fucking Nelson?!”

I’m a HUGE fan of Mstk3k, both the Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson eras. In case you didn’t know, Joel is doing something similar to Rifftrax called Cinematic Titanic, which also includes the actors who played Dr.Clayton Forrester, TV’S Frank, the original Tom Servo, and Pearl.

I haven’t watched much Rifftrax except for some clips of The Room. I hear it’s not as funny as MST3K, but who could possibly top that show? Although I must say, I want to see Reefer Madness SO BAD! It’s too bad you have to pay for friggin’ audio!

Personally, Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the guys on Rifftrax, but the other guys at Cinematic Titanic are funnier in my opinion.

  21. Tackleman says:

    Nice Interview, very well done.
I also like the “Hofbräu” cap *g*

  22. inzyster says:

You will never cease to amaze me, Sir.

  23. Brinkman says:

    Love the Hofbräuhaus hat James!

  24. Billistic says:

James, I gotta say, you need to focus your shit like a laser beam. There’s a million other sites out there that could’ve or even have done this interview, same with your comic con shit.

But there’s only one Angry Video Game Nerd.

You should focus all your effort in to that and your Spike stuff (eventually they’ll pick up AVGN for a season).

I know you have the film side of things you enjoy and you want to do and that’s cool but why don’t you get big and get paid, get the AVGN going big time then when you have time off and freedom and money do all this extra curricular stuff.

Oh and I’m not saying this stuff “is shit” it’s entertaining and it’s good and well produced and on and on and on, I love Rifftracks and MST3K and the interview is great, but it’s not groundbreaking and original like AVGN. That’s your golden egg and you should be shining the shit out of it.

  25. Ha, this guy is cool. Also, your wearing a HofbrauHaus hat, that’s awesome, i’m assuming you got it from Munich with it saying Munchen. We also have a HofbrauHaus down here in Pittsburgh.
