Mike Nelson Interview

Mike / August 12th, 2010

Mike Nelson was the head writer and host of Mystery Science Theater 3000. He is now part of the online hilarious movie mocking site Rifftrax. The people at Rifftrax were very nice reaching out to me and setting up this phone interview with the man himself. Also, special thanks to Matt Conant for helping me figure out how to record a phone call via Skype.

Check out Rifftrax.com for more info.

I absolutely love MST3K, my favorite show of all time. The guys at Best brains are the funniest people ever. Rifftrax on the other hand… They just lost their touch, unfortunately.

I didn’t knwo the Nerd was into MST3K and/or Rifftrax. I’m so glad he did this interview! Hey Nerd, most of your fans are into MST3K and Rifftrax! So keep it coming!

  • windowlicker

    August 12, 2010 at 3:05 am

OH YES… I’ve always wanted to see/hear this combination of people.

I’d love to see James commentary alongside Mike Nelson in a Rifftrax, as many other celebrities and Internet personalities have. Although that would be up to James and his comedic style.

@maikii: I disagree about Mike/Kevin/Bill losing their touch. Their MST3K stuff is classic genius, but their newer Riffing is still a ton of laughs… Trying to compare them is beside the point.

Cool! I had a hunch that there was some Mike Nelson influence behind the Angry Video Game Nerd. I loved MST3K, and this was a fun and informative interview. Great work, James.

That’s the only thing I am sad about, that MST3K never made it over here to the Netherlands. Do try to catch some rifftrax

  • August 12, 2010 at 8:33 am

Uh oh – better remove that “the room” poster before John from the room movie website forces you to take it down! Just ask the NC how that went!

  • Butch Bitch

    August 12, 2010 at 8:38 am

When I saw the picture on the site, I was like “Mike Fucking Nelson?!”

I’m a HUGE fan of Mstk3k, both the Joel Hodgson and Mike Nelson eras. In case you didn’t know, Joel is doing something similar to Rifftrax called Cinematic Titanic, which also includes the actors who played Dr.Clayton Forrester, TV’S Frank, the original Tom Servo, and Pearl.

I haven’t watched much Rifftrax except for some clips of The Room. I hear it’s not as funny as MST3K, but who could possibly top that show? Although I must say, I want to see Reefer Madness SO BAD! It’s too bad you have to pay for friggin’ audio!

Personally, Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the guys on Rifftrax, but the other guys at Cinematic Titanic are funnier in my opinion.

    Love the Hofbräuhaus hat James!

  • Billistic

    August 12, 2010 at 11:04 am

James, I gotta say, you need to focus your shit like a laser beam. There’s a million other sites out there that could’ve or even have done this interview, same with your comic con shit.

But there’s only one Angry Video Game Nerd.

You should focus all your effort in to that and your Spike stuff (eventually they’ll pick up AVGN for a season).

I know you have the film side of things you enjoy and you want to do and that’s cool but why don’t you get big and get paid, get the AVGN going big time then when you have time off and freedom and money do all this extra curricular stuff.

Oh and I’m not saying this stuff “is shit” it’s entertaining and it’s good and well produced and on and on and on, I love Rifftracks and MST3K and the interview is great, but it’s not groundbreaking and original like AVGN. That’s your golden egg and you should be shining the shit out of it.

  • August 12, 2010 at 11:39 am

Ha, this guy is cool. Also, your wearing a HofbrauHaus hat, that’s awesome, i’m assuming you got it from Munich with it saying Munchen. We also have a HofbrauHaus down here in Pittsburgh.

  • August 12, 2010 at 11:41 am

Mike Nelson was alright and all, but where’s the love for Joel?

You remember Joel Hodgson, right? The original host and creator of the damned show? :P

  • _JM

    August 12, 2010 at 11:45 am

I disagree with Billistic. The other stuff that James has done as of late has been more interesting than AVGN. I’m not saying the AVGN episodes are bad (quite the contrary) but I really like it a lot when James talks about movies and other stuff he actually has something to say about. He’s done AVGN for like 4 years now. It’s good that he’s also doing other stuff. If he only pumped out nerd videos in rapid fire they might get too repetitive and/or forced. Does he really have that much to say about all the 800 nintendo games? He sure can’t have a personal connection with all of them.

    Butch Bitch:
Don’t listen to the critics – watch Rifftrax yourself. I quarantee that if you liked MST you’ll love Rifftrax. I wouldn’t pick one over the other. Of course some episodes are better than others, just like in MST.

  • August 12, 2010 at 12:05 pm

    @Billistic
I thank you for your honest and respectful comment. Believe me. I am indeed shining that golden egg. Hopefully in the near future when I make a formal announcement, you will know the truth. Behind the scenes, I have been working for years now on something AVGN that is HUGE.

  • August 12, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I like both Joel and Mike, but they must not see creatively eye to eye. That’s why Mike, Kevin (tom Servo’s 2nd and most popular voice), and Bill (I believe was Crow’s 2nd voice) do Rifftrax and Joel, Tracey (Crow 1st voice & Dr Forrester), Frank (TV’s Frank), Mary Jo (Dr. Forrester’s mom), and Josh (Tom Servo’s 1st voice from waaaay back in the day) do Cinematic Titanic. Still a fanboy can dream that maybe some day they could all come together…sigh…that would be the best.

omg James, I love these interviews and trivia clips but something HUGE for AVGN?! Man, that’s something to mark on my calendar… if I knew the date that is lol.

Btw James, do you plan to release another AVGN volume this year? I’ve been playing the same 3 DVDs for months now and I’m starting to worry about melting the print off them or something from overuse. Would be nice to share the load with a 4th one hehe

  • August 12, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I remember contacting James to do something on mst3k because I followed the site and figured it was missing that something, I’m so glad that this interview happened, thanks James!!!

    August 12, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Just had to register to write this. I have to say I love this stuff and this site in general. The reason I frequent on this site is not because of the AVGN-videos. To me they’re only a great section of a great website.. I love 95% of the stuff you produce; I always get comfy and connect my PC to my bedroom TV when watching your videos, hah! I agree with “Ballistic” in some way though: sometimes it feels like you’re searching for a “direction” to go with Cinemassacre. It’s not a bad thing to this poster/member, but I understand if it’s a little distracting (or whatever) to some.
If I was forced to change something, I’d mostly keep things the same, but maybe change the look & theme of all the different sections (i.e. have the AVGN-page look like an 8-bit videogame with different color-theme and fonts etc., have all movie-related stuff looking like the whole site is right now).

Joel and pretty much everyone else who was ever on MST3K (during the first couple of seasons, before Mike came along) has something called Cinematic Titanic. It’s pretty awesome.

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    August 12, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Nice interview, however I only watched MST3K a few times at my friends house a long time ago so I didn’t draw too much nostalgia from this.

For people pondering on what AVGN episode may be coming up soon, the two remaining legendary things that James has actually referred to / teased subtly in previous videos are ROB and ET. With James going to lots of movie locations, not just this year but previous years, there’s probably a good chance that the place where they buried “millions” of ET cartridges will be visited by the nerd. Of course, the 100th episode is coming up soon too. I think the bigger question people should be asking is what happens after episode 100?

Not meaning to keep staying off topic, but focusing a ‘laser’ on just AVGN and movie reviews is asking for nothing but more stress. People need to do things in moderation and can’t be expected to work like a slave, otherwise overall quality in the thing you’re trying to do well will be bad. Thankfully though, the quality throughout several years has always been entertaining in my opinion, so all is well!

    @Billistic

Million people could do an interview with anyone they want, including Mike Nelson, but since its the AVGN we are supportive of his work. Ive gotten some friends hooked on James’s work, they love his shit including the interviews.

I guess what Im trying to say is Mr. James does do interviews, and other things, but we support him in what he does. We the fans like him for him, and his brutally honest opinion. He speaks the truth.

Sorry to go off topic :P

Very cool James, this would be great if you did this more often, maybe like a podcast format, talking about movies and video games, having interviews like this etc. Just an hour long show BSing about a variety of things,I’ve seen a lot of you movie and AVGN videos,I’ve got to think combining those two interests would make for a good show.

James, you’re doing it all wrong! Once someone achieves a certain level of fame they are supposed to disregard petty comments like these. How dare you mock such a proud tradition? Seriously though, its awesome to see all the different things you put up on the site, and the promise of major AVGN news has got me anxiously waiting now.

James, it would be cool to see you do a video about MST3K sometime. I heard Mke’s solo riff on Over The Top recently. It’s tremendous. I actually liked Over The Top wen I was 10. Now I like it for a whole new reason.

That was really great! I’m love Rifftrax, and MST3K so to see that you are a really big fan it just really cool. My wife and I already have our Rifftrax tickets for next thursday,we saw them do the Christmas special in Dec. Live it was really really funny, and I can’t wait to go next week, and then get to see them again at DragonCon(the Rifftrax/Cinematic Titanic guys don’t charge for autographs).Great interview, really enjoy this website and all you do here.

  • ShiningForce

    August 13, 2010 at 1:26 am

James, I have been watching Angry Video Game Nerd since the Simon’s Quest days. I loved your stuff then, and, after watching your wide variety of videos, I love it even more. I only just thought to become a member so that I could show my appreciation for your brilliant and, often times, hilarious work. I have watched MST3K since I was little and live in Minnesota, where it was filmed, so seeing this interview was awesome! I actually met Mike Nelson when I played baseball against one of his sons, which was a surreal experience. But let me tell you what is bullshit before I wrap up this extremely long comment. YOU are bullshit, bullshit man. You know why? Because you said there was some huge news with AVGN without telling us! That. Is. Ass.

  • August 13, 2010 at 1:35 am

Used to watch MST3K all the time while I was on dialysis. Good times!

  • makkles

    August 13, 2010 at 4:16 am

Awesome! I’m a big fan of MST3K (well, the seasons with Mike anyway, I didn’t find Joel to be as funny) and to see this interview just made my day.

Keep up the good work. ;)

I love it when two things I enjoy come together. MST3K and AVGN. It’s a musical collaboration between your favorite bands.

    @afterdark
Droll means funny, but I know what you mean. The show just seemed to get better and better as the years went on. You should watch “Manos: The Hands of Fate” if you want to see a good Joel episode. Also, “The Day the Earth Froze.”

    August 13, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I agree with many other commenters that this is a super awesome video because it combines two of the funniest people in the world – Mike Nelson and James Rolfe!

I absolutely agree with Mike that Wiseau is probably the worst director out there. He’s not worth the comparison with Ed Wood.

  • QMorris

    August 13, 2010 at 11:00 pm

Thanks for going through so much trouble to give us this interview!

What? Something HUGE for AVGN? I can see it now:
    AVGN: THE MOTION PICTURE
In a world overrun with shitty games, only one nerd has the power to defeat the reign of the dreaded LJN…

    That or a Broadway musical.

    Either way, I’m happy.
    Keep up the good work!

  • August 13, 2010 at 11:23 pm

I am so happy to see this connection, I have followed Mike since I was young, and before him Joel… thank god these guys kept this method going, and now with AVGN, there is the exact same outlet for us guys from the same period.

Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate Rifftraxx, AVGN and most importantly, MST3K!

aaahhhhhhhhh Mike Freakin Nelson! I’ve seen every single ep of MST3K and every Rifftrax I could get my mitts on…I saw this post and nearly shat my pants.

James, You sir, are a legend.

  • August 15, 2010 at 12:09 pm

The problem with riffing modern movies is that even the Rifftrax fellas can’t really make crud like ‘Aeon Flux’ or ‘Twilight’ all that enjoyable.

  • August 16, 2010 at 2:07 am

I only have one VERY important question.

Why has there not been a Rifftrax for The Wizard with you, James, as a guest riffer?! It MUST be done! I command it!

  • maikii

    August 16, 2010 at 4:57 pm

To expand on why I said I don’t like Rifftrax…

It seems very unnatural and awkward to me. When watching MST3K, it really seems like you’re watching 3 guys watching a movie for the first time and the jokes come naturally. Rifftrax seems to have this VERY scripted and forced sound to it and the jokes drag on forever, even over the movie dialogue. As for the jokes themselves… it seems like they look for the latest pop culture fad to reference and just go with it. MST3K was so full of intelligent and obscure jokes. I miss that. Also, as mentioned before… these new, huge budget movies they riff on… it’s just not the same. If you can laugh at the incompetence of the movie itself, like in say… Werewolf or Space Mutiny, it makes it 100 times better. I love those guys, but I just can’t get into Rifftrax. I do however, LOVE Cinematic Titanic.

    I’ll shut up now.

  • PabaBritannica

    August 17, 2010 at 8:12 am

I enjoy Riftrax, but I think park of the brilliance of MST3K was how it unearthed so much bizzare, crazy stuff and exposed it to the light. We all want to see Twilight get made fun of, but somewhere out there you know there’s another bad vampire love movie that would have been perfect for MST3K. I hope they keep this up, and find more obscure stuff as well as popular stuff.

I always thought Mike was better at riffs, while Joel was better at the sketches. Awesome interview!

Thank you for doing this interview,James.I’m such a huge MST3k fan,and I’m particularly a fan of Mike’s era.

  • August 18, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Dude. If history is any indication, this means that James will soon be invited to do a RiffTrax. Then probably get paired with Johnny Coulton for another RiffTrax afterwards. Here’s hoping.

    MST3K + AVGN = t3h win?

Damn, now I’m thinking of an 8-Bit MST3K v. AVGN game. Like Battletoads and Double Dragon. But good.

+Mike was the Head Writer for MST3K, and if you watch the KTMA episodes before he was head writer, there was a lot less dialogue from the riffers. I feel he was a big addition and the reason for the shows longevity. Although to Joel’s credit, he did get the ball rolling, and made the robots, made the song, made the show. It’s too bad the producers of MTS3K were having issues with Joel. I felt that the two working together made a superior product. Their both funny though, I enjoy both Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax. P.S. I enjoy almost all your work (there are no absolutes) everyday I check this site to see if you’ve posted anything new.

I remember seeing MST3K: The Movie for the first time, and really hating it. As I got older, my sense of humor must have shifted, because now MST3K is one of my favorite movies of all time.

James, keep up the good work!

I would love to see a video with Jame’s thoughts on Mystery Science Theater 3000. MST3K is a great show, and while talking back to the screen isn’t entirely original, it handles it in such a way that it’s hilarious and wonderful to see. As far as who is better, Joel or Mike, I prefer Mike but I like Joel almost as much.
