    August 4, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Hmm… its good, but you weren’t half-way as mad at it as you were the other shitty games. Like… Cheetahmen II. That’s pretty unfortunate. I’ve been waiting all month for this. *sigh*. Oh!! Do the Genesis game named Alien Soldier. Or for a REALLY bad game. Try the Master System’s E-SWA or Predator II. They all suck hard balls up a unicorn’s anus as they fuck some slutty alligator while jizzing in their mom’s face. Yeah, they fucking suck.

    • Bludman2

      September 27, 2013 at 3:53 am

Alien Soldier isn’t a bad game. It’s hard as shit but it’s controls are good it has cool moves e.g a parry and if you have full health a super. The graphics are great for it’s time and the bosses are cool and well designed even if they make no sense and on a smaller note their names are really badass aswell. if he is going to play it i doubt he would say that it is bad.

    August 4, 2010 at 11:23 pm

HAHAHAHAHAHA Fucking awesome James!! Especially when the power glove beat Dark Link (or shadow Link) X’D

  • August 4, 2010 at 11:23 pm

When I saw that title, I thought what could be bad about this classic game? Fortunately, the Nerd knows how to talk about it!

Didn’t expect another appearance by the Glitch Gremlin! I wonder if he’ll be a recurring character for now on? If so, then be afraid…BE VERY AFRAID!!!

An alright episode. Not your best, but the ending was pretty sweet.

I’m not surprised Link is getting all that pussy. The dude is a fucking legend, the Mick Jagger of video games, for sure!

    August 4, 2010 at 11:50 pm

helelrious, that is one of your funniest AVGNs in a while. I love all of them. I love it when you review games and think exactly what i think about it. I love Zelda 2 also. It had to be hard to find flaws on such a great game. I was wandering when your new volume of AVGN is going to come out. I love all your works. Keep up the great work!!! : ) PLEASE DO A REVIEW ON R.O.B. THE ROBOT

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    August 4, 2010 at 11:52 pm

I’ll admit, I was fooled into thinking you didn’t know about kneeling down on the left to beat dark link without any trouble. The fact that it was done with the Power Glove a la Top Gun had me in tears. Turning the tv back on and looking at the glove in disbelief will probably make good use of animated gifs on the internet.

I honestly can’t think of a better way a Zelda 2 AVGN could have been done. I played the game with my mom 20 years ago, and I’m glad there was mention of that “spell” spell in the village to make that tower come out of nowhere. All of the frustrations associated with beating the game without a guide or the internet were expressed very well.

I think everyone will agree that Nerd videos on popular games (that people likely have played) are the most enjoyable since we all get taken back to the past that we could all relate to.

  • PabaBritannica

    August 4, 2010 at 11:53 pm

Every time I visit one of my friends that lives in DC now, we end up playing this game and talking about how fucking hard this thing is. I believe it’s too hard to the point of getting bored eventually.

We like to text “I AM ERROR” to each other from time to time.

Keep up the good work. And review Home Improvement for the SNES at some point.

  • Slaanash

I liked this game. It needs more love. =/

  • Blasphemy666

    August 5, 2010 at 12:08 am

It’s my favorite game in the series, I love the difficulty and the combat system. The great palace is also the best final palace in any video game ever.

  • August 5, 2010 at 12:09 am

Awesome episode James! It always brightens my day when I see there is a new AVGN to watch!
As far as Zelda 2 goes, I will admit when it first came out, me and my friends didn’t like it. It was too different than the original that we loved so much. In several ways the graphics seemed to take a step back. As the years went on though, I have grown to love this game as being a refreshing take on the Zelda series, even if the overworld map is kinda lame lol.

  • August 5, 2010 at 12:21 am

It’s a hard game for sure but this is one of the few reviews (other than Super Mario Bros. 3) that the Nerd doesn’t call shitty or anything like that. The game only makes him angry because it’s so fucking insanely difficult!

  • August 5, 2010 at 12:29 am

What kind of thrust? Wow James. Nice ep. bud’

    August 5, 2010 at 12:36 am

One of my all-time favorite games! I thought I was one of the only ones who wondered what Link did in the house with that woman. Another well done review! Thanks!

  • volt28

    August 5, 2010 at 12:36 am

You are right that Zelda 2 is a game people either love or hate. I played it recetly and found myself turning to the internet to find out what to do very often. The real Final fantasy 3 follow the same battle system of random battles. You have no choice. However there is no way around enemys. And leveling up experience is annoying but necessary. Its satisfying to final be able to get 7000 point hits.
Anyway I like the game. Maybe you can do some bad sega games? Streets of rage 2 was pretty shitty in my opinion.

    August 5, 2010 at 1:41 am

i fucking hated death mountain, to this day i can’t beat it, you gotta go to a swamp that pops up enemies that are really frustrating compared to the other ones, and if you get the 1up and die, the fucker will never come back, then you gotta meet some stupid asshole hidden in the swamp, talk to him, go to the town, tell a guard that you know the shithead in the swamp so he makes a bridge appear, the you go to death mountain, you go to a lot os caves and you gotta beat enemies in each one (and in one you gotta use the jump spell) get the hammer and beat a temple, all that, early in the game, without getting a single game over, that’s bullshit

  • August 5, 2010 at 1:43 am

Was Mike Matei just, not around for this episode?? Because I’m surprised he didn’t act as Link for the remote scene.

lol I want your power glove mine’s doesn’t work

  • August 5, 2010 at 4:04 am

What a great game. I was one of the few who actually liked it more than the first Zelda and was disappointed when the SNES Zelda didn’t fallow in a similar manor.

Wouldn’t it be cool if Nintendo remade this à la New Super Mario Bros. Wii? I think that’d be sweet!

  • Rael

    August 5, 2010 at 4:07 am

U know? Until I saw this I didn’t understand Link’s moves or the music of super smash bros melee, man It’s so awesome. Specially the side scrolling part on the adventure mode. so cool man… Now I will do all I can to play Zelda 2. and also, Im so gald u didn’t mention the CDI ones., I think those are so out of our hearts!

  • August 5, 2010 at 4:19 am

This was one of the first nes games I played as a kid and it was on a rented console. I grew up in a small town and only one kid in town had an nes (as well as the power glove). I think this was way over my head when I was 8, I still haven’t beaten this zelda to this day.

  • Paulik

    August 5, 2010 at 4:25 am

    Very nice, James.

  • Boraltis

    August 5, 2010 at 4:34 am

Best strategy for beating Shadow Link: Take short jumps at him, swinging your sword as you come down so that it hits the top of his head. It hits almost every time.

Then you’ll get to play a second, twisted adventure, just like the first one. Everything’s in a different location. Wanna be frustrated? Beat em both. Takes quite a while.

  • supermangaz

    August 5, 2010 at 4:37 am

Another great addition to the AVGN, keep it up man.

    p.s. gold cartridges rules

  • August 5, 2010 at 4:43 am

The thing with the temple being destroyed and not getting the item happend the second time I played and beat Zelda 2, it really got me pissed off but I still love the game.

Oh, and here is something better left unmentioned: Link also “gets some magic” from an old woman in certain towns… yeah.

    XD

  • gamemaster382

    August 5, 2010 at 4:55 am

nice movie. The part of Link holding up an item was just funny and mentioning to hold up the remote control.

  • August 5, 2010 at 4:55 am

Oh, just remembered: when Final Fantasy came out on the NES my brother was convinced that it was the third Zelda game. LOL He actually told this to me before I even played it, and when I finally did play it I couldn’t figure out how to fight enemies; I didn’t even understand that that’s what the battle system is for.

    Ahh… stupid times, stupid times…

  • erickm05

    August 5, 2010 at 5:01 am

i always thought this game was good..i have it on the wii(im only 13 calm down)and of course i cant beat it, although i am starting to collect old video games and i started with goleneye on the n64 and er…a bad game called gex which i spent for shits and giggles

  • K6CTX

    August 5, 2010 at 5:38 am

Ok, I’ll say it since nobody else seems to have the balls to. Zelda II is horse shit and I’m glad a Zelda game has never gone back to that formula. I’m from the days of yore when this piece of garbage was considered ‘new’ and ‘cutting edge’. However, this game is nothing but shit. F…U…C…K this game, it wasn’t good at the time and isn’t good now.

P.S. AVGN, can I buy you a beer?

  • strint519

  • jason24589

    August 5, 2010 at 6:15 am

On this game, there is a poorly translate English, “I am error” because on FDS version, his name in Japanese is “Bagu” and may cause to translated to “bug”. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-am-error

    August 5, 2010 at 6:29 am

about the swastika in zelda 1:
the buddhists also have the same sign (not exactly, as it´s mirror-inverted).
it means “sun” and is a topic tourists in asia are often curious about when they see it at old temples etc.

in china it means “infinity” or “long life” and the japanese do use some of the chinese characters.

it has nothing to do with the old germanic sign which means “power” or describes an old race (that´s one of the reasons why the nazis used it).

    good episode btw!

  • captain redbeard

    August 5, 2010 at 6:31 am

i just learned that the sign in japan is even used on landscapes to mark budhist-temples!

The new AVGN episodes always make my day. There is nothing better than wake up in the morning turning on the computer and realize that the new Nerd Episode is out!
Even if he is not as angry as he used to be, but he is still a nerd. :D

  • August 5, 2010 at 7:01 am

    Awesome and unexpected episode.
I actually liked…and still like Zelda 2 more than the first game.

Don’t really think it’s that hard either. I was stuck for a few years, but that was because I didn’t know enough english to read the hint on where to find the hidden town. Compared to the Second Quest in the original(which never gives you enough hints and got old guys robbing your hearts and impossible combinations of enemies), it’s a cakewalk…

Anyways, fun episode. Made my day, especially the ending.

Loved the new video. I personally like the ones with multiple games. I got an idea why not to a huge episode on the rest of the shitty LJN NES games. I know you missed a few. :) Or shitty unlicensed games which most are. Anyways, great episode and look forward to next month.

  • August 5, 2010 at 7:45 am

The “Swastika” is actually the Manji symbol. In Buddhism it represents Dharma, universal harmony, and the balance of opposites. In Zen Buddhism, the Manji represents an ideal harmony between love and intellect.
Think of it as the Buddhist equivalent to the Ying-Yang.

It was then adopted by Hitler as the Nazi flag.

But since Japan has deep ties with Buddhism , very often you will see the Manji in use in things like Games, Anime, Manga ect. But due to the symbols animosity in the Western world it’s usually censored when localized.

  • Schloss Ritter

    August 5, 2010 at 7:47 am

That Zelda 1 level is not a swastika but rather the original symbol that was flipped the other way.

Oh no, not the Glitch Gremlin again.

And Link gets some action in the end after all thanks to the Power Glove.

  • August 5, 2010 at 7:54 am

ha ha ha yeah the power glove saves the day jokes nice 1 james keep up the awsome work like u always do :)

this video was man funny i like the part when you beat the game with the power glove lol

  • August 5, 2010 at 9:12 am

Wow James! Thanks for mentioning the old Zelda no-sword challenge! I had started the concept some years ago on Twin Galaxies. We eventually increased the challenge to be totally minimalist. This means only 3 hearts, only the green armor, no potions, no sword, etc. Now THAT was fricken HARD! Unfortunately Ganon cannot be destroyed without a sword, so the challenge ends once you reach his room.

  • thetruetombo

    August 5, 2010 at 9:14 am

awesome!, well worth the wait!, zelda 2 is hard as s#$@!, and the GameGlitchGrimlien is awesome too. Look forward to seeing the next one James.

    August 5, 2010 at 9:40 am

    Good Job,

  • August 5, 2010 at 9:50 am

Nice episode. The ending was hilarious, but I couldn’t believe AVGN took so long to notice what was on the screen right before he turned it off. Meh, cartoon comedy… Which we love. :)

Link wasn’t doing “that” next to Zelda at the beginning. He probably had been talking to the king (I don’t know) a while ago, and now, he was just looking at her, sad, thinking about the mission he has ahead. But James was probably doing comedy again.

  • imposter

    August 5, 2010 at 9:54 am

AVGN episodes always brings me back to my childhood of frustration. I honestly am glad I’m not the only who remember this game being hard either. I wouldn’t say this game sucks, it’s just hard.

Side note; I was watching CDi part 2 Zelda on gametrailers, and mistakenly clicked on this video thinking it was CDi part 3. I thought the intro seemed a bit different until I realized I was watching the new episode after looking at the title bar of firefox.

  • August 5, 2010 at 10:00 am

Was that staged, or did he really beat the final boss by waving around? …I’ll assume he did.

  • ZomBine

    August 5, 2010 at 10:03 am

Great video, never beat that game, not exactly my favourite. Love the A Clockwork Orange tribute *the old in out in out*.

I have some idea with you….. it’s near episode 100.. because you may release some episode about games for computer ??
Oh yeah…. computer like Amiga 500… Commodore 64 and many others !! Example for Amiga 500 exist so many SHIT games i can suggest to you :)

    I thinks it’s a great idea.

I remember it took my father back in the day a entire week to beat the game. Also for the random battles in FF3/6 try having Terra alone and running into a Tonberry in the Narshe mine….She couldn’t run fast enough.
I like to see you do a Final Fantasy review.

Holy Crap! I cannot wait to watch this video!

I actually beat this game a couple times and think it is pretty under-rated (even though the last level is incredably tough). but am really looking forward to seeing you rip into it.

    this is awesome.

    August 5, 2010 at 11:15 am

  • scronan

    August 5, 2010 at 11:22 am

Great review! This happens to be my favorite game on the NES, but even so I remained impartial because much of the criticism against it is warranted. ;)

I apologize if this has been mentioned already (too lazy to read through all the comments), but I was a little disappointed that you didn’t mention the fiasco that happened when this game was released which was more frustrating than the games flaws 10 times over. Back before Nintendo Power in the days of the Fun Club News, there was an article about Zelda II that got all of us early NES nerds to wet our pants because they also had a pre-order for the game. We ordered the game and waited…and waited…until they finally said something about running out of computer chips (due to a shortage or something) and the game ended being delayed for quite a while. The pre-order checks were returned and we looked for this game for months without success.

To add insult to injury, the Official Nintendo Players guide showcased the game and the first few levels (that was actually the Famicom version we were to learn many years later), which was pure )()(#)(#$)( torture for everyone. I didn’t know many people who actually had finished both quests for Zelda 1 and saw the little note that there would be a sequel…but trying to find this game in stores was beyond futile. Rumors abounded that it could only be found on the East coast (I lived in the West), but no one I knew ever produced a real copy. I called every store for a 100 mile radius for weeks and then months…until finally finding it in a rental store of all places (bastards). I then sat down and played it for an entire weekend without sleep and finished the game, but even after this I wasn’t satisfied because I still didn’t own it.

Months later, I walked into a store out of town after still calling every store in half of California if they had it…and I finally found my very own copy. I never, ever forgave Nintendo for doing this…and I still think the whole computer chip fiasco was just a marketing ploy.

It is still weird to think about why they changed the games format so much..but if you look at the rest of the sequels released during that time (SMB 2, CV 2 and even Ikari Warriors 2)…you can see it was just a sign of the times…I used to call it the “Era of Weird and Crappy Sequels.” ;)

Loved this new video, especially the reaction to beating the game with the Power Glove. I don’t think James has done this (at least on video) since Top Gun.

And I agree as well, it’s pretty much a love it or hate it game.

  • August 5, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is a reason that Error mentions his name. A person in Mido tells you to ask Error about something, and he tells you the location of the King’s Tomb.

    Error is his name.

Zelda 2 is and will remain as my favorite Zelda game of all time. It’s the only game that provides a real challenge, the rest of the Zelda games were definitely not as tough.

    August 5, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Great Job James, I love how you referenced the differences between one and two. I did notice less aggression, seeing it is a Zelda game you still are passionate about it. LOZ will always be my fav game of all time! Bad Ass job once agian!

Another fantastic video, James. I never thought I’d see you cover Adventure of Link, but I see what you’re saying. The quest to attain the hammer was so hard I had to have my older friend finish that for me back in 1989. To this day, he is still jokingly known as the “Master of ‘tendo.” ;)

Keep up the great work, James.

    August 5, 2010 at 3:33 pm

    I’ve always hated that game.

Also, why does Link”s sword look like a tiny wooden club? Even as a kid that bothered me. In The first game, he started with a wooden sword, but it was quickly upgraded to a steel one. In Zelda 2, it always looks like a stupid wooden club

Zelda 2 is one of my favorite games, but I don’t like Zelda 1 much. To each his own.

This episode still had some funny moments, especially the part about the enemy names in the original Zelda.

Please review Total Recall for the NES!

    August 5, 2010 at 10:06 pm

The last part had to have been the funniest. First time I saw it I figured “yeah, I’m sure Mike was playing and this was just a joke on when he landed the plane in Top Gun”. After my second watch, I remembered that also in that video that when James tried to play Zelda 2 with the Glove, he couldn’t stop jumping or crouching and slashing. Who knew that the best way to beat one of the hardest bosses in a Zelda game was to do exactly what the Power Glove, a failed piece of hardware, is only capable of doing?

    August 5, 2010 at 10:55 pm

I love Zelda II but really appreciated the review. You really pointed out some of the issues with the game, some of the quirky things, and the video was quite funny. Nice to see the glitch goblin make a return as well as the Power Glove “cheating” to beat Dark Link.

  • Figuras

    August 5, 2010 at 11:25 pm

That Guy’s name really is Error! You even need that information later in the game, because someone sends you to talk to him. But if he wouldn’t tell you his name, you wouldn’t have a clue, which character in the game could be that Error .

  • August 5, 2010 at 11:40 pm

You know that Red “Wizard” thing you fight. Have you ever watched She-Ra Princess of Power? I think the Witch in that series is the same character design only well how much of the figure can be shown off in a Zelda game on NES?

Really fun how you beat the game with the Power Glove. But I suck at the game I haven’t even been able to get the darn candle once yet and I have owned the game since back when it was being sold new. It almost made me give up playing video games completely more than once.

In a way Rumors of Dark Link or Shadow Link are why I like Zelda 64 Ocarina of Time so much. You get to pound his ass out of existence and that is just satisfying.

Great Review and I hope the Glitch Gremlin can make a reappearance again.

One thing though. With all the turdy sounds to the theme of this game at the beginning why couldn’t Shit Pickle or the Nerdy Turd have made return appearances?

  • August 5, 2010 at 11:52 pm

I loved the game as a child, but you would never believe the shit the glitch gremlin gave us.

My brother and I had combed every inch of Death Mountain, yet we could never find the god damned bloody hammer.

Turns out it was just COMPLETELY MISSING FROM OUR GAME. It simply did not exist. But we didn’t know this, and probably spent years stuck on it.

Finally one attempt, my brother started a game with the name “IMPA” … because that was one of the Zelda characters in the manual, with the rational that naming the game “ZELDA” was a trick for starting the original Zelda on the second quest.

Well it didn’t start a different game … but low and behold, the fucking hammer spawned where it was supposed to. We could finally beat the god damned game. I discovered that calling my name “IMARK,” as opposed to just “MARK,” worked as well.

I don’t know how we got stuck with a bum cartridge. I think I may have seen one person online bitch about this before.

    Thanks for the video!

  • Redd the Sock

    August 5, 2010 at 11:59 pm

Love the video. As much fun as nerd rage can be, I find these reviews of good yet flawed games to be very entertaining, even moreso than some game I’ve never heard of. And since games may never be “art” in the eyes of professional critics, I thnk it’s important to leave something more intelectualy substancial.

If you continue down this path of generaly good games I have a request: Star Tropics. A fun game with some annoyances, but room for big nerd rage over that stupid letter needed to progress in the game.

Very good review, and a pretty good game too. Zelda II is actually my favorite in the series, I think this is because of the stronger RPG focus. As for the difficulty…yes, it is difficult in some places, but far from impossible. I beat it as a kid, and I beat it again quite recently. I think the stuff you need to do can be figured out without consulting the Internet or Nintendo Power too, you just have to pay close attention. Sometimes, the villagers will actually say something useful.

    Anyway, good video, James.

Dear James, Here Are Some Games I Hope You Consider Reviewing In The Future:

    1. The Punisher
    2. The Goonies 2
    3. Predator
    4. Gremlins 2
    5. Alien 3
    6. Jaws
    7. Total Recall

All Of These Games Are For The NES!
    And All Of Them Suck!

  • Kay

    August 6, 2010 at 4:28 am

The Goonies 2…that’s actually one of my favorites. Perhaps it’s another of those “love it or hate it”-games. Mobygames lists three review scores: A-, 7.5 out of 10, and D.

    August 6, 2010 at 10:55 am

Another great review, James. Personally I like it when you review these types of games, where you either love it or hate it. I don’t know why this game got so much criticism. Yes it is the black sheep of the Zelda series and a step in the opposite direction of the original, but sometimes change is good.

What I like about the game are it’s difficulty and innovation. There simply wasn’t anything like it at the time. I also love the music in this game – in my opinion it has one of the best soundtracks on the NES. It still gives me chills when you enter the Great Palace. The music is unlike any of the other palaces, the sky is black and the bricks are golden. Yeah, I’m a nerd, but it’s the little things like that that make a game for me.

Keep the videos coming. You make my day every time you release a new video. :)

I don’t know which game is worse…. Predator or Total Recall. The Punisher isn’t BAD…. its just not good. Its very dull and lifeless, you just float on a raft listing lazily to the right killing random people to the soundtrack of silence.

Anyways I suggest you review METROID, for your next game review. Like Zelda 2 , I think Metroid has different opinions, Some like it and others hate it. keep up the great work James!

The ending with the Power Glove was fucking EPIC. I laughed so hard. My husband, who wasn’t paying attention either, didn’t notice what I was laughing at until it was almost over. Awesome review.

  • August 6, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Tired out the glitch shown here, and yep, it sucks when you get stuck :P
Also, there was a semi-remake of the original Zelda game called Zelda BS. It was a download service provided by Nintendo of Japan that didn’t go over so well. The lack of support for the service ultimately left the game supposedly unfinished, but the graphics were enhanced to look like their SNES little brother: Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
One more thing, might I make a suggestion to do a special on password screens of yore? Two games that I find hard to play because of this are Legacy of the Wizard (I liked it, but not sure how many actually did, so if any request for that game come along, I’d like to see it bashed a bit :P )
and Goonies 2. Those are the two off the top of my head that have really awkward password screens other than the ones you mentioned before.

  • Magerius

    August 6, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I heard that you don’t have any PS3 games yet? Well ,if you wanna review a REALLY hardcore game, Demon’s Souls (PS3 only) should give you quite a big challenge!

Try Beating Demon’s Souls twice. As if the game wasn’t difficult the first time, on the second playthrough it gets really hardcore.

Only TRUE hardcore gamers can beat it twice.

Granted, it’s not a BAD game. Like all the ones you upload video reviews for. Actually, it’s a very good game. Just… Insanely Hard. Try it if you really want a hard game.

  • August 7, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Another fantastic ep James. Even worse than going back to the start upon Game Over, you also lose all your experience points! And the game saves which p-bags you got and they never come back.

Great game, but hopelessly hard towards the end.

  • Seoleim

    August 7, 2010 at 5:41 pm

The only thing that I consider bad for this game, is the fact that they made no other zelda games in the style afterward. The side scrollerish parts on the game boy zelda game don’t count. This is my favorite of the 2 NES ones and it’s just a shame they didn’t pick up and run with the style a bit more when they could of quite easily.

It’s also the first game I remember playing that used a level up system. While i’m sure it’s not the first to do something like that, it sure was for me at the time. I only managed to beat this game a few years ago with the help of my sister. Dark Link is still a hard bastard to kill.

  • UpsideDownFace

    August 7, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I have to agree that both Predator and Total Recall on the NES would be perfect for this show. They’re both fucking terrible, and both based off of awesome Arnold movies. Well, Total Recall is a decent flick, but few action films can touch the original Predator.

  • UpsideDownFace

    August 7, 2010 at 6:15 pm

I liked this game a lot, and honestly wish they had brought back the formula in a later title. It had problems, not gonna argue with that, but was still fun and different. The difficulty could get a little obnoxious at times and the castlevania-like “grunt, then fall backwards when you get hit” didn’t help that at all.

When I was a kid I tried playing Zelda II a few times at a cousins house and I remember not liking it very much. I much prefer the overhead view Zelda games. I don’t know if I necessarily consider this a bad game, but it is not my cup of tea.

I probably played Zelda II for all of 10 minutes before getting tired of it, so It was fun watching this video and getting to see what the rest of the game is like.

    August 8, 2010 at 11:50 am

Fantastic video James. I figure I make a note that there were a number of differences in the Japanese version of Zelda II. The bull in water palace was instead just another bull Ironknuckle, the running horses in the first palace did not take experience, the music was slightly different, Link stabbed things to acquire them (no picking up motion), and most different was the experience system.

You could max out a statistic of your choosing (Attack, Magic, or Life) instead of doing it based off of the predetermined system in the US version. The only downside was that if you died, that statistic would go back to whatever your lowest was. So if you maxed out Attack at 8, Magic at 6, and Life at 4 and then died. All would be at 4 when you continued.

The experience system was also easier. With it taking half as much as the US version to get 8/8/8 at 4,000 vs. 8,000.

  • Stage

    August 8, 2010 at 12:32 pm

I gotta admit, when I saw that it was for Zelda II, I was like “Huh? How could that be bad?” But, he makes some good points.

    Great video, I love it.
(Extra points for the return of the Glitch Gremlin)

And yes, I agree that it may be a little different, but it’s one of the best Zelda games and one of my favorites, in my opinion. And yeah, to beat Link’s Shadow you just duck in one place and stab! :D

I’m sure you probably really knew that, but still… beating it with the Power Glove like you did was fricken hilarious!

Return of Power Glove and Glitch Gremlin! I loved it! Thanks for this James! :)

I think that the reason that the recent AVGN Episodes have become better is that he’s releasing an episode each month, giving him time to actually put some work on them and get a good episode each month instead of 2-3 less better, due to the compact time span…

So keep the creativity up and give more of these episodes..
And yeah, as previously commented, bonus points with the return of Glitch Gremlin A.K.A. Kevin Finn

The fact you quoted from A Clockwork Orange made me create a account just to say how damn awesome you are. You should definitly do a review of that movie.

  • August 9, 2010 at 1:26 am

Shadow Link is indeed difficult, but he can be beaten without using the corner trick.

Basically, you want to stay aerial for most of the fight and throw attacks at him constantly as you jump toward him. It will force him to guard high and he won’t always be able to swap low before you naturally fall to that range, so as long as you continually attack while you’re on the offensive you can hurt him or at least throw him off guard.

The key to not taking damage yourself here is to stand up the moment you’ve pushed him back or hurt him, so that his standard counter will be directed at your shield.

The other element is a little simpler, and that is to follow up with some duck-attacks after you’ve stood and taken one or two in the shield. You want to bounce from crouch to stand as quickly as possible, attacking high just as you start the crouch so he is again forced to shield high just before you finish the crouch and attack.

As far as defense goes, it’s almost completely absent in this fight. You NEED to keep Shadow Link on the defense, and no, he doesn’t copy your every exact move, only a facsimile of it. This is how you can put him on the defensive without defending yourself. If you can’t seem to get past his shield, back off and come at him again; you’d be surprised how vulnerable he is to the beginning of a chain of attacks.

I hope you, James, and anyone reading this who likes this game, take these tips and go beat Shadow Link’s ass without cheap-outs, it’s ridiculously satisfying. =D

When I beat this game many, many years ago, I wasn’t aware of the crouch in the corner and stab away trick. I earned it the hard way, and Golkar is right: It is infinitely satisfying when you pull it off because the shadow is one hard motherfucker without the crouching trick. Loved the video by the way.

Great video, glad you finally reviewed this game. I picked up this game again on the Wii from the Shop for stability’s sake. I don’t trust either of my NES machines or Zelda II cartridge at this point. Everything The Nerd says is true. I get to the third palace and can’t get any farther, it’s just too hard.

Another annoying thing in Zelda II is that you lose all of the EXP that you gained on that play-through if you lose all your lives, that is leading up to the next Level Up, not losing the actual level.

Japanese Zelda II was way easier, they could pick any stat to level up when they did, they didn’t have to go in a set order like we do.

That swastika dungeon is most likely because Zelda was made by Japanese and Japanese people use swastika as a symbol for Buddhism.

  • August 14, 2010 at 3:03 am

Way back when I first had an NES, my brother and I played the hell out of Zelda II. When we had finally worked our way through everything but the last palace, an asshat adult refused to let me kill myself off to save. This is the one time that my save file was actually wiped. Then our NES was stolen.

Years later, I decided to get to the end of the game using an emulator so I had cheat codes and save/load state. Well, something was wrong with the ROM, and in the final palace when the first boss shows up again….well, he never showed. I played through it a second time, and the same thing happened. I was sure I would never be able to finish this game.

Many years later, I had a roommate with the very same GC version mentioned by Ravenwolf. I broke out the FAQ’s and maps, and I took on this damn game one final time! I saved every extra life for the final palace, and dammit, I pulled it off.

I will never play that damn piece of shit again. Though I love the music.

  • August 17, 2010 at 10:49 am

I don’t know if someone already mentioned this, but you are indeed correct about the item / boss thing with the palaces — it does not turn into a rock until you have beaten both the boss and gotten the item.

Also — I’ve found the skulls to be a worthwhile investment of time EARLY ON, considering that your first level is 100 points (two skulls, although you’ll invariable already reach that level by the time you see your first skull). I can usually get to 3/3/4 by the time I beat the first palace.

The main reason to do this, of course, is that since you auto-level every time you complete a palace, it makes sense to push as far as you can before hand. I’ll typically do palace 1, then go all the way through to death mountain, play through it a few times, get downthrust / fairy, and THEN do palace 2 — Helmet head is WAY easier when you’re already level 5/6/7 or higher :) With some persistence, you can get 8/8/8 before crossing to the second island. Death Mountain is a guaranteed ~1,000 points each time through.

Although I’m an avid player of the Zelda series, I have yet to play this game — but this episode of AVGN certainly revealed its potential awesomeness. It’s exactly as you said, it’s the “dark horse” of the saga, but still a classic. Can’t wait to give it a try!

  • August 17, 2010 at 7:58 pm

I got to the end but couldn’t beat it with the regular controller.
Afriend of mine had a NES Advantage and said you had to use turbo to be able to hit Shadow Link.
Sounded like a good idea. Went to go get one and it was out of my price range, so I bought an NES Max instead.
Kicked his ass the first time through.

  • August 17, 2010 at 8:05 pm

    BTW
I haven’t played the CD-I games (and probably won’t) but this is my least favorite game in the franchise.
And Rambo didn’t imitate this game, Rambo came out first.
I remember because I chose between Zelda 1 and it as a game to buy back in the day.
I remember seeing those bubbles and immediately thinking of that level in Rambo and how much it sucked.
I was more accepting of the Zelda version, though.

You know, games can be left on the shelves for a while, particularly if they’re successful, such as the first Zelda. Rambo came out almost a full year after Zelda II. So you were probably just two years late in looking to buy the LoZ.

  • August 18, 2010 at 11:13 pm

No I remember this very well.
Look at Nintendo’s release date list.

Look, shmoyle, I have watched all the AVGN videos and I considered commenting on it the first time around on the Rambo video, but opted to let it go as it was a minor thing.

But with Rambo out in the US a full 6 months before Zelda 2, I find it highly unlikely that Rambo stole the style of side scrolling from.

  • Zentu

    August 22, 2010 at 3:34 am

You Know James, Your Almost up too 100 AVGN Videos!….Heres a suggestion for a video.

Ok, Suppose I handed you a wheel, idk, can be from a car what ever… Then say I ask you to improve the design of the wheel. or more/less Reinvent it. Well, you just can’t, only way it gets better, is to out right replace it. –SO WHY am I talking about a Damn wheel you ask? Would you believe that Sega back in the day basicly tried to do just that with a character They had? I’m talking about the all but forgoten Alex Kidd. Aparently Alex’s Popularty was so great he was preaty much the Mascot for Sega, before they scraped him for the Still popular Sonic The Hedgehog.

-Admittingly I’ve only played the First Game that had him, which was Alex Kidd in the Mirricle world, The Problem I found with the game, was that some might believe it to be the hardest game they ever played. Trust me, this game gets VERY Difficult, Unless you played it a few times over, Your not going to be prepared for the S#it that comes your way. I won’t spoil any other things I found with the game. But I will tell You this game was also REMADE as a Built in game for the Sega Master System II, …Yes its the same game, But, I also hurd that the Jump and Attack Buttons for both versions Differ from eachother.

Why? Clash at Demonhead was awesome!

Anyway fantastic review. Like with just about every one- from TMNT to the Prequel Trilogy- I find myself agreeing almost 100%. Still, I thought the naming of the enemies at the beginning got old kind of quick, and it’s just an opinion but that glitch gremlin could really just go away. Still, this was both fun and informative, a good trip through a game that is, as you said at the beginning, a decent game that gets a bad rap. I only beat it once about 20 years ago so it was nice to see again.

I have to agree, this game was different from the first and a let down, but when you got over that as a kid you still played the hell out of this game. • Zentu

    August 24, 2010 at 1:11 am

Honestly aside from the spin-off game Shadow the Hedgehog for the PS2, (Which I unfortunately Own) I don’t think their were many bad Sonic games, Not unless you want to count STH 2 For the Sega Game Gear, Seriously Those edmralds were stupid-hard to find, and even if you knew exactly where some are, your timeing had to be dead-on. to reach them. Least the games where the Edmralds were part of the main Plot were ok, you were not boged down so much with the task of finding them all over again, BUT OH the Humanity We wait so long to be able to transform into Super Sonic Freely like we did in STH 3 but instead, we only transform freely in the Riders and Sega All Star games?! Not to mention Super Sonic is only playable in other games during the Final Battle…What a Huge let down.

-One other thing about the older Sonic Games I can say is that, You clearly need to remember the Game itself, because some of the mechanics were different from each other. If you played STH 2 For Genesis for example, you know you can duck in place and build up speed for a spin Dash, If you suddenly Switch to playing STH 1, you can’t spin dash in place, instead, you had to back track just to build up speed to break the blocks. Not to mention some of the difficult Dr. Robotnik fights.

This review was good. Okay i should say… i do hope you see this post, Nerd, cuz what I’d like to say is, what i think, most people really miss in your reviews. Its that you stop lecturing us on games, and just do what you did before–MORE ANGER!!!! I already played this game, i know about it, no need to tell me about it. But what i want to see (What i come for on this site) is myself, from the INSIDE, OUT. I remember in another (GOOD ZELDA GAME) trying to beat this bat thing in some haunted forest. I did eventually beat it, but before, boy was i pissed!!! I broke my game boy advance! I felt stupid, replaced it and gave it another go. I beat it yes, but you should have seen me. Its hilarious cuz its true, WE JUST WANT TO SEE OURSELVES GET PISSED if you catch my drift. Get mad. Scream. Act angry at shitty games. Fact is, even in Grand Theft Auto, sometimes i LOSE because of bad design in a game… shitty games do this more often the good ones–I think this is where your talking about a game got off track. You’d explain very well in past reviews why you were so pissed (not just getting pissed but having a damn good reason to get pissed) In your review on the Wizard Of Oz review, it was good cuz well, falling through platforms is stupid in a platformer where platforms are vital in beating the game. Fucking Idiots they don’t think anything of it!!! Yeah, but that’s them i guess. Just get mad for us, so we don’t have to. Learn from the critic. He remembers it so we don’t have to. Its just funny this way, you know? JUST GET MAD!!!! MAD!!! MAD!!!! MAD!!!! SCREAM!!! SHOW US YOUR FRUSTRATION!!!! EXPLAIN IT AS IF YOU’RE TALKING TO YOURSELF AS I DO WHEN I”M MAD!! I EXPLAIN IT IN MY BEDROOM AND NOBODY IS AROUND TO HEAR IT!!!! I SAY “GOD DAMN ZELDA BOSS HOW THE FUCK CAN ANYBODY BEAT THIS IF THE FLOOR MOVES” THEN I CALL THEM ASSHOLES! My mom downstairs freaking out because of of me screaming upstairs pissed off at my game boy… and blah blah blah.

Ya Know….Hes Mentioned it in other Video Games hes reviewed, But I don’t suppose He would do one on Super Mario Brothers?

    - Of course, Its a classic, and it was a Ground-Breaking game for the Mushroom Kingdom hero, and the Controls are ok. But I can see if your a Kid no Older then 10 Back in the Day how the later stages would give anyone troubble.
    - Those Lakitus Were troubble, and getting rid of them was more troubble than it was worth, Even if you took down one, there would be another to arive after.

I loved the first Zelda and Link to the Past but the other entries never hit me the same way those two did. What’s weird is when I think of Zelda 2, I don’t think of the actual game. As some of you may remember, back in the 80′s there were these Nintendo collector cards. They came with a rock hard stick of gum just like all the other collector card packs. But they also came with these scratch off game cards, I always got the Zelda 2 ones. Ahh, sweet nostalgia.

s_w_sanders is a hypocritical idiot and a sensitive bastard that everyone should ignore. The most blatant being “I want to criticize someone else but will bitch and moan at everyone that does it to me.” Also, without any bias feelings, he doesn’t know how to make videos and isn’t funny at all.

@KoolaHyjinx That is the most intelligent thing anyone on this message board has ever said. I men come on people I openly insult people, I run my mouth, I constantly promote my own videos and it’s taken over 100 messages for someone to figure out just to ignore me. This just goes to show what I claim and that is the Nerds fans are idiots. And by the way if your ignoring me why are you still talking about me. Oh and I can take critiscism as long as it’s intelligent which it hasn’t been so far. So I made this video and was inspired by all you nerd fans here on the forum here’s a link inspired by all of you http://amiageniusproductions.blip.tv/file/4071427/

@sanders I checked out a couple of your videos. They were pretty entertaining. I actually laughed out loud pretty hard while I watched the one about the critic on internet people. Then I had my buddies come and watch it too. We all laughed, it was great. I liked how you just said what you thought instead of reading a cue card or a prepared script. You could really tell you were thinking hard when you would stop and look up into the recesses of your brain and then continue again. Or when @ about 2:45 you must’ve ate a little kid or something because something definitely came up and stopped you from saying anything for a few moments. Pretty sure you farted from your mouth hole. It was hilarious. Keep up the terrible work, it’s funny because it sucks.

Shadow Link is almost as easy as Dracula from Castlevania 2. Just back up to left side of the screen as far as you can go, crouch and keep swinging your sword. I can’t believe people are calling this game hard, it’s quite easy. You just have to build up your attack, magic and life. What I use to do when I was a kid was some mansions have a knight statue in the entrance that either gives you full magic or turns into a knight when you strike it, so you’ll get 100 points or full magic. I would go in and out of the mansion like a hundred times.

1:18- This just reminded me on the mixed opinions of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen; some people love that film where others hate it. Well, I one of those many people who LOVES that film. B)

Whenever Link gets killed, not only does he turn into a shadow figure, but the screen gives the player a seizure indusing light show.

8:40- Well, at least this didn’r recieve alot of controvercy like that one time with GTA.

What the hell is it with that stupid Power Glove? Is it like the Commodore, that it only works whan it feels like it?

I love this game. It was a doozy as a kid trying to figure out what to do. Me and my friends made it to the end with no guides, couldn’t finish it, took years but was definitely before SNES. RPG’s need exp or fighting becomes pointless. I also loved Simon’s Quest for the same reason, though i have no idea how i figured out how to do the kneel by the wall thing, i think my uncle called the hotline maybe. I dig the lack of explanation. Could be why I’m Stuck on Minecrack, uhh, i mean MINECRAFT. Love your shit man. Psyched to see you on spike.com i thought you were my random nerd but people know too. I downloaded it to My Wii after playing The GBA port I borrowed from a friend, and I’m going to beat it, come hell or high water I will beat Zelda 2!

  • January 26, 2011 at 1:15 am

Great game, but yeah, it’s unforgiving, but if you know how to time your stuff right, you’ll not take as much damage from some of the iron knuckles. Also, I wanted to submit this rebuttal of Error in the game. There’s a guy in Mido that you talk to who’s inside a house, right after passing the “hooker.” This man will tell you that Error of Ruto knows about the palace. When you go back to talk to Error in Ruto, he won’t say, “I am Error,” He’ll say, “South of King’s Tomb in Mido is a tunnel.”

I guess I can agree… but I still love this game. People keep complaining about the cryptic stuff in games, and I guess I just don’t get it. When I played these games, we hunted around, asking towns people and would just get clues. I never saw a single copy of Nintendo Power, but we played through these games all the time – and loved it. I actually miss the games like this (not including Milon’s Secret Castle, of course!)

Kids today probably don’t realize how nice this kind of a game was for us older gamers.
Thinking back to my first days of gaming with the Atari, then stepping up to the NES with a game like Legend of Zelda… We went from games based solely on beating 3 or so stages (Like Donkey Kong) or only trying to gain a high score on an infinite amount of stages (Like Space Invaders). So when my friends, family and I went on adventures in Hyrule for the first time, it’s hard to describe how amazing that was.
So when the Adventure of Link came out, it was packed with a lot more innovations at the time that even the first game didn’t have, and sadly, no other Zelda game afterward would try to simulate again.
I love the Zelda games of the 16 bit era and up, but it seems like there wasn’t as big a leap between the games in innovations as there was for the first (when compared to Atari and other NES games) and the second Zelda game. At work today, I was thinking about these things and I realize that this is why we should play old games from time to time. Really old games. Then move up a generation, kind of relive the history of our culture and help remember why I’m such the gamer I am today, as jaded as I might be now.

    1. go to the harbor town of Mido (north of the graveyard).

    2. count 5 doors and go in the 5th door (it should be the first open one)

    3. talk to the man inside he states “Ask Error of Ruto About the palace”.

    4. go talk to Error and he doesn’t say “I am Error” he hints at the location of the secret gravestone.

P.S. I did this while i commented so I’m not making this up try it out and see for yourself.

Zelda 2 is one of my fav games of all time. It is hard as fuck but I revisit this game quite often. I have only managed to beat the game once and can’t seem to do it again. Loved the video. BTW One guy on here said he was inspired to do Wii games, I’m inspired to do gameboy games so be on the look out on youtube. But no matter how many imitators there are out there, there is only one AVGN and that is you James!

I used to love these games as a kid. Didint get through them untill later. But you dont need nintendo power to get through them. I remember watching my dad play these games (zelda 1 & 2) for hours and he beat them, he cant even speak english :D For me the nostalgic value is priceless.

Got this game for christmas in the late 80s the same year I got my first nintendo. Link, Mario, and Ghosts and Goblins. Played this shit out of this game, but could never conquer the thunderbird.

Revisited it in my adult years and finally took it down. Felt more accomplished kicking that thing’s ass than I did obtaining my college degree.

It’s funny that AVGN claims to like the game, because in the video he does a great job explaining why it sucks.

    • JeremiahTurnblat

      December 22, 2011 at 3:04 am

@toad004 It doesn’t really suck that bad, though. He makes a big deal out of Death Mountain, but I didn’t have much trouble with the enemies. When those rhino-headed fucks come running at you, swinging their hatchets, it IS nerve-wracking. Still, I didn’t absolutely need to resort to a walkthrough until I got to Three-Eye Rock Palace. Just getting to that place after a game over is a chore, and then the palace itself is hard as balls!

The only thing I really hate is that the game will tell you things like, “GO TO PARAPPA,” but it won’t actually tell you what Parappa IS. I only knew it was the desert to the east of the more obvious desert, through a cave behind some trees, because I read about it on a Zelda wiki.

That said, the game wasn’t much harder than most games out at the same time, and added a lot of elements to the Zelda series that we now take for granted – magic, a big hammer, special boots, Shadow Link, and more.

Old Zelda games were much better then the new ones.

It took me like forever to beat the 2 NES and the first Game Boy parts.

Today its all like… every damn NPC tells you what you have to do, and the secrets in the games are either “unavoidable” or just useless.

I beat Twighlight Princess and Skyward Sword SO freaking fast…

Makes me wanna rape the guys at Nintendo for making me pay like 70$ for a game that i beat in less then 20 hours…

I wish the old school Nintendo, or at least Squaresoft were back.

Games mostly suck without them, they are just too freaking easy, as if they were made for 4 year old kids.

And you can only unlock a “non moron mode” by beating the game…

    Yea, thats R-E-Tarded…

    FUCKING SUCKS!!!!!!!!!1111one

    • Luigi84289

      February 10, 2012 at 7:54 am

@googlejustsucks Zelda went downhill after Majora’s Mask. They hold your hand way too much now. I did enjoy Minish Cap but that is the only one since MM that I have had any interest in. What always made zelda awesome was the freedom but it’s become more linear as the years have gone by. I always enjoyed beating the early dungeons last in the original and bypassing most of them in ALTTP grabbing an item here or there to help me get through whatever one I was working on.

  • googlejustsucks

    January 7, 2012 at 10:22 pm

    Sorry for doublepost but…

Its kinda dumb how the Nerd is all like “omg, how were u supposed to figure that out?”

The only thing i had LOTS of problems finding, was that hidden town witch he only mentions for 1 seconds.

Waking the spider with the flute was told you in a town.

I think they said something like “The beast with many arms doesn’t like music”

And the same thing goes for the spell.

Some NPC said something like “there is something hidden in the east” or “there once was a temple in the east”. And well, when you get there, what can you do but “hit the air”, “jump around” or “use your spells”?

I still dont get how to “find” the hidden village, last time i played it, i had to read it on the internet, no NPC said anything that you had to use the hammer on some stupid square on the map…

Did ppl rly try to “use” every square on the map and just got lucky? :P

Death mounts you need to go left and keep going left. I actually had a map back in the days of where all the caves went.

I actually finished the game on the NES it took what seemed like forever.

The only bad thing about Zelda 2 was how hard it was and it wasn’t even really that hard. It was more that nobody had the patience to build up Link’s stats. Which is understandable as a kid. You just want to get through the game and beat it which is why the first Zelda is highly favored over the 2nd. They are both great games regardless.

About the level turning rock, if you don’t get all the keys in a level but get the item and beat the boss, it WILL turn to rock. This happened to me before; i couldn’t get a key in the level so I ‘borrowed’ it from a future level. Since the level turns to rock, I never paid back my debt, and I’d encounter a keyhole without a key, and was stuck. And had to replay the entire game again.

That guy wh says “I AM ERROR”. That is his name. his name is Error. in fact, you need to talk to him later. in the game, you are told to give something to Error. If you don’t know who that is or can’t remeber, then that sucks. Solution? Give the guy an interesting name like Error. You won’t forget that guy anytime soon. Have ANY of us forgotten him? Nope. Then Nintendo did it PERFECTLY. Good job on that one, guys, good job.

Out of all of them II was my least favorite but for some reason the music in the game gets stuck in my head at least once a week. Just one of those things that’s permanently etched in my mind like image burn on an old monitor. The same goes for Mario, Contra, Castlevania and the best of all which you can probably hear me humming at least once every day; Double Dragon stage 2.

  • January 1, 2014 at 6:56 am

Link does parkour! That is so cool…but then it creates glitches when he does. I have learned something today.

  • January 1, 2014 at 7:04 am

The end. The curtain falls and stops so that you can only see Link and Zelda’s legs as they get closer. But it ruins your childhood when you realize what happened in the towns.

  • January 26, 2014 at 6:08 am

I just tried playing the original Legend of Zelda and after wandering around not knowing where to go for about 5 minutes I died.. it was boring.. or rather not as fun as i thought since there was no direction meaning you could potentially just walk along forever… don’t see why everyone considers it just a great game. Legend of Zelda Wind Waker is far better then the original one was.. at least you know where your going

Zelda II is a lot like Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins. It certainly isn’t a bad game, it’s just really difficult (although it’s piss easy compared to Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins), and that puts a lot of people off and stops them enjoying it for what it is.
