Hmm… its good, but you weren’t half-way as mad at it as you were the other shitty games. Like… Cheetahmen II. That’s pretty unfortunate. I’ve been waiting all month for this. *sigh*. Oh!! Do the Genesis game named Alien Soldier. Or for a REALLY bad game. Try the Master System’s E-SWA or Predator II. They all suck hard balls up a unicorn’s anus as they fuck some slutty alligator while jizzing in their mom’s face. Yeah, they fucking suck.
Love how you included Link performing a little of the old in-out, in-out on a weepy young devotchka…. Love this game and love that movie! Sick video James.
helelrious, that is one of your funniest AVGNs in a while. I love all of them. I love it when you review games and think exactly what i think about it. I love Zelda 2 also. It had to be hard to find flaws on such a great game. I was wandering when your new volume of AVGN is going to come out. I love all your works. Keep up the great work!!! : ) PLEASE DO A REVIEW ON R.O.B. THE ROBOT
I’ll admit, I was fooled into thinking you didn’t know about kneeling down on the left to beat dark link without any trouble. The fact that it was done with the Power Glove a la Top Gun had me in tears. Turning the tv back on and looking at the glove in disbelief will probably make good use of animated gifs on the internet.
I honestly can’t think of a better way a Zelda 2 AVGN could have been done. I played the game with my mom 20 years ago, and I’m glad there was mention of that “spell” spell in the village to make that tower come out of nowhere. All of the frustrations associated with beating the game without a guide or the internet were expressed very well.
I think everyone will agree that Nerd videos on popular games (that people likely have played) are the most enjoyable since we all get taken back to the past that we could all relate to.
Every time I visit one of my friends that lives in DC now, we end up playing this game and talking about how fucking hard this thing is. I believe it’s too hard to the point of getting bored eventually.
We like to text “I AM ERROR” to each other from time to time.
Keep up the good work. And review Home Improvement for the SNES at some point.
It’s my favorite game in the series, I love the difficulty and the combat system. The great palace is also the best final palace in any video game ever.
Awesome episode James! It always brightens my day when I see there is a new AVGN to watch!
As far as Zelda 2 goes, I will admit when it first came out, me and my friends didn’t like it. It was too different than the original that we loved so much. In several ways the graphics seemed to take a step back. As the years went on though, I have grown to love this game as being a refreshing take on the Zelda series, even if the overworld map is kinda lame lol.
It’s a hard game for sure but this is one of the few reviews (other than Super Mario Bros. 3) that the Nerd doesn’t call shitty or anything like that. The game only makes him angry because it’s so fucking insanely difficult!
One of my all-time favorite games! I thought I was one of the only ones who wondered what Link did in the house with that woman. Another well done review! Thanks!
You are right that Zelda 2 is a game people either love or hate. I played it recetly and found myself turning to the internet to find out what to do very often. The real Final fantasy 3 follow the same battle system of random battles. You have no choice. However there is no way around enemys. And leveling up experience is annoying but necessary. Its satisfying to final be able to get 7000 point hits.
Anyway I like the game. Maybe you can do some bad sega games? Streets of rage 2 was pretty shitty in my opinion.
well, my balls have once again been blown off! the only thing that annoyed me wuz the loud sounds that were made when James guessed wrong. but nontheless, holy hot damm, this is fuckin good
Great review, I have only mastered this game once but I don’t really remember it, but this was a refresher. It not as bad as it looks it really is a fun game. Again great review, see you in a month
i fucking hated death mountain, to this day i can’t beat it, you gotta go to a swamp that pops up enemies that are really frustrating compared to the other ones, and if you get the 1up and die, the fucker will never come back, then you gotta meet some stupid asshole hidden in the swamp, talk to him, go to the town, tell a guard that you know the shithead in the swamp so he makes a bridge appear, the you go to death mountain, you go to a lot os caves and you gotta beat enemies in each one (and in one you gotta use the jump spell) get the hammer and beat a temple, all that, early in the game, without getting a single game over, that’s bullshit
Dude! Your timing was perfect! I am in the process of buying a NES and this is one of the games I was thinking about buying but I didn’t know much about the gameplay and now… 15-minute AVGN review! Thanks man, will surely try to get it now because it looks great!
What a great game. I was one of the few who actually liked it more than the first Zelda and was disappointed when the SNES Zelda didn’t fallow in a similar manor.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Nintendo remade this à la New Super Mario Bros. Wii? I think that’d be sweet!
U know? Until I saw this I didn’t understand Link’s moves or the music of super smash bros melee, man It’s so awesome. Specially the side scrolling part on the adventure mode. so cool man… Now I will do all I can to play Zelda 2. and also, Im so gald u didn’t mention the CDI ones., I think those are so out of our hearts!
This was one of the first nes games I played as a kid and it was on a rented console. I grew up in a small town and only one kid in town had an nes (as well as the power glove). I think this was way over my head when I was 8, I still haven’t beaten this zelda to this day.
Best strategy for beating Shadow Link: Take short jumps at him, swinging your sword as you come down so that it hits the top of his head. It hits almost every time.
Then you’ll get to play a second, twisted adventure, just like the first one. Everything’s in a different location. Wanna be frustrated? Beat em both. Takes quite a while.
The thing with the temple being destroyed and not getting the item happend the second time I played and beat Zelda 2, it really got me pissed off but I still love the game.
Oh, and here is something better left unmentioned: Link also “gets some magic” from an old woman in certain towns… yeah.
Oh, just remembered: when Final Fantasy came out on the NES my brother was convinced that it was the third Zelda game. LOL He actually told this to me before I even played it, and when I finally did play it I couldn’t figure out how to fight enemies; I didn’t even understand that that’s what the battle system is for.
i always thought this game was good..i have it on the wii(im only 13 calm down)and of course i cant beat it, although i am starting to collect old video games and i started with goleneye on the n64 and er…a bad game called gex which i spent for shits and giggles
Ok, I’ll say it since nobody else seems to have the balls to. Zelda II is horse shit and I’m glad a Zelda game has never gone back to that formula. I’m from the days of yore when this piece of garbage was considered ‘new’ and ‘cutting edge’. However, this game is nothing but shit. F…U…C…K this game, it wasn’t good at the time and isn’t good now.
Nice Clockwork Orange reference. That movie is so awesome.
James, you should do a Stanley Kubrick special episode or something, and educate all these kids that watch your videos on the best movies on the planet (they’re all made by Kubrick).
On this game, there is a poorly translate English, “I am error” because on FDS version, his name in Japanese is “Bagu” and may cause to translated to “bug”. http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/i-am-error
about the swastika in zelda 1:
the buddhists also have the same sign (not exactly, as it´s mirror-inverted).
it means “sun” and is a topic tourists in asia are often curious about when they see it at old temples etc.
in china it means “infinity” or “long life” and the japanese do use some of the chinese characters.
it has nothing to do with the old germanic sign which means “power” or describes an old race (that´s one of the reasons why the nazis used it).
The new AVGN episodes always make my day. There is nothing better than wake up in the morning turning on the computer and realize that the new Nerd Episode is out!
Even if he is not as angry as he used to be, but he is still a nerd.
Awesome and unexpected episode.
I actually liked…and still like Zelda 2 more than the first game.
Don’t really think it’s that hard either. I was stuck for a few years, but that was because I didn’t know enough english to read the hint on where to find the hidden town. Compared to the Second Quest in the original(which never gives you enough hints and got old guys robbing your hearts and impossible combinations of enemies), it’s a cakewalk…
Anyways, fun episode. Made my day, especially the ending.
Loved the new video. I personally like the ones with multiple games. I got an idea why not to a huge episode on the rest of the shitty LJN NES games. I know you missed a few. Or shitty unlicensed games which most are. Anyways, great episode and look forward to next month.
The “Swastika” is actually the Manji symbol. In Buddhism it represents Dharma, universal harmony, and the balance of opposites. In Zen Buddhism, the Manji represents an ideal harmony between love and intellect.
Think of it as the Buddhist equivalent to the Ying-Yang.
It was then adopted by Hitler as the Nazi flag.
But since Japan has deep ties with Buddhism , very often you will see the Manji in use in things like Games, Anime, Manga ect. But due to the symbols animosity in the Western world it’s usually censored when localized.
Wow James! Thanks for mentioning the old Zelda no-sword challenge! I had started the concept some years ago on Twin Galaxies. We eventually increased the challenge to be totally minimalist. This means only 3 hearts, only the green armor, no potions, no sword, etc. Now THAT was fricken HARD! Unfortunately Ganon cannot be destroyed without a sword, so the challenge ends once you reach his room.
Yay Zelda! I loved this game as a kid … and hell I still love it! Sure the game has flaws but this game was a huge part of my childhood and I’ll always love it. Great episode dude, can’t wait for more!
Nice episode. The ending was hilarious, but I couldn’t believe AVGN took so long to notice what was on the screen right before he turned it off. Meh, cartoon comedy… Which we love.
Link wasn’t doing “that” next to Zelda at the beginning. He probably had been talking to the king (I don’t know) a while ago, and now, he was just looking at her, sad, thinking about the mission he has ahead. But James was probably doing comedy again.
AVGN episodes always brings me back to my childhood of frustration. I honestly am glad I’m not the only who remember this game being hard either. I wouldn’t say this game sucks, it’s just hard.
Side note; I was watching CDi part 2 Zelda on gametrailers, and mistakenly clicked on this video thinking it was CDi part 3. I thought the intro seemed a bit different until I realized I was watching the new episode after looking at the title bar of firefox.
I have some idea with you….. it’s near episode 100.. because you may release some episode about games for computer ??
Oh yeah…. computer like Amiga 500… Commodore 64 and many others !! Example for Amiga 500 exist so many SHIT games i can suggest to you
I remember it took my father back in the day a entire week to beat the game. Also for the random battles in FF3/6 try having Terra alone and running into a Tonberry in the Narshe mine….She couldn’t run fast enough.
I like to see you do a Final Fantasy review.
I actually beat this game a couple times and think it is pretty under-rated (even though the last level is incredably tough). but am really looking forward to seeing you rip into it.
I also want to point out (even though nobody gives a shit) that this was the game that prompted my brother and I to bug my mom into buying us a Game Genie. Good times.
Great review! This happens to be my favorite game on the NES, but even so I remained impartial because much of the criticism against it is warranted.
I apologize if this has been mentioned already (too lazy to read through all the comments), but I was a little disappointed that you didn’t mention the fiasco that happened when this game was released which was more frustrating than the games flaws 10 times over. Back before Nintendo Power in the days of the Fun Club News, there was an article about Zelda II that got all of us early NES nerds to wet our pants because they also had a pre-order for the game. We ordered the game and waited…and waited…until they finally said something about running out of computer chips (due to a shortage or something) and the game ended being delayed for quite a while. The pre-order checks were returned and we looked for this game for months without success.
To add insult to injury, the Official Nintendo Players guide showcased the game and the first few levels (that was actually the Famicom version we were to learn many years later), which was pure )()(#)(#$)( torture for everyone. I didn’t know many people who actually had finished both quests for Zelda 1 and saw the little note that there would be a sequel…but trying to find this game in stores was beyond futile. Rumors abounded that it could only be found on the East coast (I lived in the West), but no one I knew ever produced a real copy. I called every store for a 100 mile radius for weeks and then months…until finally finding it in a rental store of all places (bastards). I then sat down and played it for an entire weekend without sleep and finished the game, but even after this I wasn’t satisfied because I still didn’t own it.
Months later, I walked into a store out of town after still calling every store in half of California if they had it…and I finally found my very own copy. I never, ever forgave Nintendo for doing this…and I still think the whole computer chip fiasco was just a marketing ploy.
It is still weird to think about why they changed the games format so much..but if you look at the rest of the sequels released during that time (SMB 2, CV 2 and even Ikari Warriors 2)…you can see it was just a sign of the times…I used to call it the “Era of Weird and Crappy Sequels.”
Loved this new video, especially the reaction to beating the game with the Power Glove. I don’t think James has done this (at least on video) since Top Gun.
And I agree as well, it’s pretty much a love it or hate it game.
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is a reason that Error mentions his name. A person in Mido tells you to ask Error about something, and he tells you the location of the King’s Tomb.
Zelda 2 is and will remain as my favorite Zelda game of all time. It’s the only game that provides a real challenge, the rest of the Zelda games were definitely not as tough.
Great Job James, I love how you referenced the differences between one and two. I did notice less aggression, seeing it is a Zelda game you still are passionate about it. LOZ will always be my fav game of all time! Bad Ass job once agian!
Another fantastic video, James. I never thought I’d see you cover Adventure of Link, but I see what you’re saying. The quest to attain the hammer was so hard I had to have my older friend finish that for me back in 1989. To this day, he is still jokingly known as the “Master of ‘tendo.”
Also, why does Link”s sword look like a tiny wooden club? Even as a kid that bothered me. In The first game, he started with a wooden sword, but it was quickly upgraded to a steel one. In Zelda 2, it always looks like a stupid wooden club

HAHAHAHAHAHA Fucking awesome James!! Especially when the power glove beat Dark Link (or shadow Link) X’D
August 4, 2010 at 11:23 pm
When I saw that title, I thought what could be bad about this classic game? Fortunately, the Nerd knows how to talk about it!
Didn’t expect another appearance by the Glitch Gremlin! I wonder if he’ll be a recurring character for now on? If so, then be afraid…BE VERY AFRAID!!!
August 4, 2010 at 11:24 pm
lol the ending was hilarious

An alright episode. Not your best, but the ending was pretty sweet.
I’m not surprised Link is getting all that pussy. The dude is a fucking legend, the Mick Jagger of video games, for sure!

The new AVGN episodes always make my day. There is nothing better than wake up in the morning turning on the computer and realize that the new Nerd Episode is out!
Even if he is not as angry as he used to be, but he is still a nerd.
August 5, 2010 at 7:01 am
Awesome and unexpected episode.
I actually liked…and still like Zelda 2 more than the first game.
Don’t really think it’s that hard either. I was stuck for a few years, but that was because I didn’t know enough english to read the hint on where to find the hidden town. Compared to the Second Quest in the original(which never gives you enough hints and got old guys robbing your hearts and impossible combinations of enemies), it’s a cakewalk…
Anyways, fun episode. Made my day, especially the ending.
August 5, 2010 at 7:19 am
Nice one, I loved the ending!
August 5, 2010 at 7:43 am
fallout 3, best rpg ever
August 5, 2010 at 7:44 am

August 5, 2010 at 7:47 am
That Zelda 1 level is not a swastika but rather the original symbol that was flipped the other way.
Oh no, not the Glitch Gremlin again.
And Link gets some action in the end after all thanks to the Power Glove.
August 5, 2010 at 7:54 am
ha ha ha yeah the power glove saves the day jokes nice 1 james keep up the awsome work like u always do
August 5, 2010 at 7:59 am
Awesome! I’ve been waiting for this for years!
August 5, 2010 at 8:13 am
Haha! Great review. i remember this game was hardcore! can’t even beat it now.
August 5, 2010 at 8:27 am
LMAO I love the “a clockwork orange” reference with the old in out in out lmao
August 5, 2010 at 9:01 am
this video was man funny i like the part when you beat the game with the power glove lol
August 5, 2010 at 9:12 am
August 5, 2010 at 9:14 am
awesome!, well worth the wait!, zelda 2 is hard as s#$@!, and the GameGlitchGrimlien is awesome too. Look forward to seeing the next one James.
Mike is the best Joker ever.

Yay Zelda! I loved this game as a kid … and hell I still love it! Sure the game has flaws but this game was a huge part of my childhood and I’ll always love it. Great episode dude, can’t wait for more!
August 5, 2010 at 9:40 am
Good Job,
August 5, 2010 at 9:50 am
Nice episode. The ending was hilarious, but I couldn’t believe AVGN took so long to notice what was on the screen right before he turned it off. Meh, cartoon comedy… Which we love.
Link wasn’t doing “that” next to Zelda at the beginning. He probably had been talking to the king (I don’t know) a while ago, and now, he was just looking at her, sad, thinking about the mission he has ahead. But James was probably doing comedy again.
August 5, 2010 at 9:54 am
AVGN episodes always brings me back to my childhood of frustration. I honestly am glad I’m not the only who remember this game being hard either. I wouldn’t say this game sucks, it’s just hard.
Side note; I was watching CDi part 2 Zelda on gametrailers, and mistakenly clicked on this video thinking it was CDi part 3. I thought the intro seemed a bit different until I realized I was watching the new episode after looking at the title bar of firefox.
August 5, 2010 at 10:00 am
Was that staged, or did he really beat the final boss by waving around? …I’ll assume he did.
August 5, 2010 at 10:03 am
Great video, never beat that game, not exactly my favourite. Love the A Clockwork Orange tribute *the old in out in out*.
August 5, 2010 at 10:03 am
I love the use of the A Clockwork Orange movie quote:
“little of the old in-out, in-out”
August 5, 2010 at 10:14 am
Hey Mike… another great Episode.
I have some idea with you….. it’s near episode 100.. because you may release some episode about games for computer ??
Oh yeah…. computer like Amiga 500… Commodore 64 and many others !! Example for Amiga 500 exist so many SHIT games i can suggest to you
I thinks it’s a great idea.
August 5, 2010 at 10:27 am
I remember it took my father back in the day a entire week to beat the game. Also for the random battles in FF3/6 try having Terra alone and running into a Tonberry in the Narshe mine….She couldn’t run fast enough.
I like to see you do a Final Fantasy review.
August 5, 2010 at 10:28 am
2 of my friends have beaten this game lol.
August 5, 2010 at 11:01 am
Holy Crap! I cannot wait to watch this video!
I actually beat this game a couple times and think it is pretty under-rated (even though the last level is incredably tough). but am really looking forward to seeing you rip into it.
this is awesome.
August 5, 2010 at 11:15 am
Would have been so much funnier if the Nerd turned off the tv and never knew what he’d accomplished. LOL. Still a 10/10 video.
August 5, 2010 at 11:18 am
I also want to point out (even though nobody gives a shit) that this was the game that prompted my brother and I to bug my mom into buying us a Game Genie. Good times.
August 5, 2010 at 11:22 am
August 5, 2010 at 11:46 am
AHHHHHH! Sneak attack by the game glitch gremlin!
August 5, 2010 at 12:00 pm
I’m already itching for September to get here for NFL and new AVGN (you can tell I got a lot of shit on my plate).
August 5, 2010 at 12:09 pm
Holy crap YAYYY
NEW AVGN
I love today
August 5, 2010 at 12:40 pm
Best Birthday gift EVER!
August 5, 2010 at 12:52 pm
Loved this new video, especially the reaction to beating the game with the Power Glove. I don’t think James has done this (at least on video) since Top Gun.
And I agree as well, it’s pretty much a love it or hate it game.
August 5, 2010 at 1:02 pm
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is a reason that Error mentions his name. A person in Mido tells you to ask Error about something, and he tells you the location of the King’s Tomb.
Error is his name.
August 5, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Didnt seem as angry as usual but still a great episode.
August 5, 2010 at 1:30 pm
I was shocked when i saw the title zelda 2. Great review James
August 5, 2010 at 1:55 pm
Man that was a awesome episode thank you for all your hard work. I really liked the unexpected appearance of Mr. Glitches.
August 5, 2010 at 2:23 pm
Zelda 2 is and will remain as my favorite Zelda game of all time. It’s the only game that provides a real challenge, the rest of the Zelda games were definitely not as tough.
August 5, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Great Job James, I love how you referenced the differences between one and two. I did notice less aggression, seeing it is a Zelda game you still are passionate about it. LOZ will always be my fav game of all time! Bad Ass job once agian!

August 5, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Another fantastic video, James. I never thought I’d see you cover Adventure of Link, but I see what you’re saying. The quest to attain the hammer was so hard I had to have my older friend finish that for me back in 1989. To this day, he is still jokingly known as the “Master of ‘tendo.”
Keep up the great work, James.
August 5, 2010 at 3:33 pm
I’ve always hated that game.
Also, why does Link”s sword look like a tiny wooden club? Even as a kid that bothered me. In The first game, he started with a wooden sword, but it was quickly upgraded to a steel one. In Zelda 2, it always looks like a stupid wooden club
August 5, 2010 at 3:33 pm
awesome!!!
August 5, 2010 at 4:19 pm
one of the best avgn videos so far cant wait for more keep up the greak work james your a LEGEND!!!!!!!!!
August 5, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Bout damn time! I hated this game…
Now it gets it’s turn >:)
August 5, 2010 at 4:39 pm
Love the ending, I laughed my ass off! Cant wait for the next!
August 5, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Zelda 2 is one of my favorite games, but I don’t like Zelda 1 much. To each his own.
This episode still had some funny moments, especially the part about the enemy names in the original Zelda.
Please review Total Recall for the NES!
August 5, 2010 at 5:15 pm
Ok i know how he beat the game. he used the old hiding in a corner strategy.
August 5, 2010 at 5:50 pm
OMG! I wasn’t expecting this till next week! Thank you so much, James! *hugs*
August 5, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Bravo James. Finally you’ve found Power Glove usefull !
August 5, 2010 at 5:57 pm
“I guess I’ll just crouch over here and stab your knees.
Stabby stab stab.
How you like that shit?”
Only thing I could think of when Dark Link got Power Glove’d.
August 5, 2010 at 6:30 pm
not what i expected at all, great job! love the glitch genie any chance your gonna be at PAX in seattle?
August 5, 2010 at 6:40 pm
I liked your reference to Clockwork Orange.
A real horrorshow viddy, James =D
August 5, 2010 at 6:43 pm
well fucking a lol i cant whait for another one avgn rules
August 5, 2010 at 6:45 pm
A very different episode. Funny but lacks rage. I like you reviewing good games with some bad quality . Bring on more like this in the future!
August 5, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Great Review, Nerd. Good Job.
