A Trip to the Dawn of the Dead Shopping Mall

Since we visited the Night of the Living Dead cemetery, we decided to also make a stop at the mall in Monroeville, PA, seen in Dawn of the Dead (1978). This video’s a little more crude. Since we were shooting in a mall, we went guerilla-style with this one. Anyone seen the Mall Tour bonus feature on the Dawn of the Dead DVD? The one where Ken Foree’s giving a tour of the mall, shot by a distant handheld camera. You can barely hear him. It’s pretty sloppy. Ours is slightly better.

Dude, I live around the area and I was just at the mall two days ago.

That kicks ass you guys went there, Dawn of the Dead is my favorite movie!

I practically grew up in Monroeville Mall, I lived only 10 minutes away haha I only live 20 min. away now though. Anyways, I think it's so cool that my town could take such a big part in pop culture history and be at the roots of the zombie genre! Can't wait for the zombie walk this year, I vote James should make an appearance!

Wow, I don't know how I missed this one, considering I only live 15 minutes away from the mall. Thanks for paying tribute to one of the few "public" sets you can go to and realize a whole movie was shot in that location. It's also great that the building is still being used 33 years later.

Thanks again James and happy trails. Next time your in Monroville, near Mckeesport, shoot me an e-mail scottkope@yahoo.com and I'll show you some of the best places in town to eat at.

Guy: "Oh crap, its the Nerd!!"

I love the dedication of this man, he travels to the sets and the locations of the films, amazing http://www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/vizzedindex.php?...

For location-hunting this must be one of the most satisfying places. I mean so many stuff and the ambiance they just haven't changed over all those years.

What about a hunt for the remains of the "Evil Dead"-Chimney? I would looooooooooooooove to see that. I know, it's not much left you can film there but some sights still exist. The chimney, some streets with backgrounds they've used and the old pub where the crew got their meals? But just being out in those woods (or within) would be exciting enough for me to make a trip if I wouldn't come from Europe. And I almost did once. What do you think? A special for Halloween. You could do it creepy like a documentary ("In Search Of..."-Style). Please James, PLEASE...!! ;-)

Man the red blood text looks awesome how did u do that u have got to tell me how to do that!!!!!!!!!!!!

ya the zombie walk, u should go. im kicked out of the mall currently so thats the only time i can get away w/ being there.

Again! Right in my area! I should take part in the Zombie Walk they have in October.

Hey,...are you coming to this years zombie walk? They usually hold it in October! You should get a video than, crazy zombie punk metal bands, and the official walk! Oh yes! Good times! I met Ken Foree last year! Did you know he was Kenan's Dad?! I made a shirt that said "Nobody F*&ks with Ken Foree"...he loved it! BE THERE! OH YES! Be there....

OMG dude this is AMAZING!!!!!!!!

It's awesome that you guys did a tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made...I have the DVD set that includes the UK version of the movie and I noticed that you can't hear Ken talking most of the time :-(....James and Mike, I must say you guys are really funny....keep making those videos and give us more BRAAIIIIINNNSSSS :-P!!!!! (oops, that's another movie-LOL)

Awesome! I saw a homeless looking guy outside that mall once that looked a lot like Tom Savini. I'm still not convinced it wasn't him, in some kind of disguise :P

"We got this man... We got this BY THE ASS!!!" Classic Roger line, James!

Awesome! You guys continued your epic zombie movie journey and visited the Monroeville Mall!!! Now, compared to the NotLD cemetery, this is THE landmark where all fans of the Romero Dead Movies MUST converge and visit! I'm hoping I'll get the opportunity someday, as the original Dawn Of The Dead still remains my all time favorite zombie flick! The setting, the characters, and the story... AWESOME TO THIS DAY! Great hunting and job, James and Mike!

I actually visited that mall myself and this video really brings back memories. I'm just wondering about something though. When I went, there was a comic and collectibles shop in the mall that had a tribute to Dawn of the Dead and was a little zombie shop. Given the fact that James didn't mention it, I'm wondering if the place is still there because when I went, the place was in the process of movie to a different location.

Where did you get that Tiger Uppercut shirt? thats awesome. haha. cool vid to btw.

Did you guys go to the toy store? If you go all the way to the back, they have a Dawn of the Dead museum, with props from the movies, mannequins that are dressed and made up to look like certain zombies from different movies, and a DVD playing telling you about the making of the movie.

There's also a "Maul Wall" (or whatever the actual name is) where every actor put their hand print in red paint on a wall. There's so much cool stuff back there, and I hope you guys had a chance to check it out.

blood in that movie looked soo fake , ive watched it twice coz i wanted to show to some friends how stupid it is

Nice video! Lol, that ending was fairly corny and lame:-P But great video!

damm i tohught this was guna be the remake mall

o well still cool

This is really funny because I live right around Monroeville. The mall is about a 15 minute drive from where I live. I go to this mall all the time just to shop. I think it's really cool to see these guys marvel at my local shopping mall. I was half expecting to see myself somewhere in this video.

It was also funny to see him pronounce Monroeville Mon-roeville. Around here we pronounce Mon as in Monday.

How did you get Dawn of the Dead on your iPod James?

Great doc as usual!

good job James& Mike

Cool, I never seen the movies but they look epic. You guys should go to where Friday the 13th was filmed. Sadly as I post this message hundreds of boyscouts are having fun there. I actually live next to the town it was filmed in and last thursday I actually went to the camp it was filmed in.

You should come back in the middle of October, that is when they celebrate world zombie day at the mall, I highly recommend it. You'll be amazed by how many people come.

go to that mall all the time

now do the day of the dead mines. ;)

my favourite of the five romero zombie films. :)

This has got nothign to do with anyhting of the mall trip but he has a tiger uppercut shirt....thats epic

sooooooo awsome there should be a dawn of the dead fan shop that would be cool but the blood from the movie that would be funny

I. Really REALLY wanna see this damn movie so bad! i tried youtube.com but pfft not the whole thing due to copyright issues. i'm pretty sure hulu.com doesn't have it either but i can give it a shot. anyways this movie and mall and exploration is awesome. you and mike always put on a show XD. long live cinemassacre :D!!!

When you guys went there did you see a place called "Time and Space" I went in and they had the actual props and zombies from the movie it was cool to see.

that reminds me of dead rising whens the new one coming out

Sweet. I love you guys for doing this. This is my absolute favourite in the genre.

I would love a full length commentary by you for the original Dawn of the Dead, like you did Dracula!

This is actually pretty awesome. I went to high school near where the remake was filmed, but the mall ended up failing and got turned into a community center. Sucks tbh.

yay im the 100th comment, but nah, i love zombie movies and dawn of the dead is one of my favourites, man you're so lucky to be able to go to all the places and see all the scenes from the movies

They actually do a zombie walk around Halloween through the mall every year. I went two years ago and it was awesome!!!

Awsome you know it would be amazing if you go to the hotel were the Shining was film

Wouldn't it have been hillarious if they hadn't cleaned up the gorefest before reopening the mall in the morning?

Holy crap I live a mile away from that mall!

This is really cool. I've been to the Monroeville Mall plenty of times since my grandparents house is nearby. I sat down and watched DOTD with my mom a few years back and she pointed out all the places she used to work and how things changed since then. As you obviously know, the entire mall pretty much got updated since then, like the ice skating rink is so longer there. But it's still pretty amazing to see landmarks of one of the greatest movies ever made!

The ending made me jump. lol
