A Trip to the Dawn of the Dead Shopping Mall
Since we visited the Night of the Living Dead cemetery, we decided to also make a stop at the mall in Monroeville, PA, seen in Dawn of the Dead (1978). This video’s a little more crude. Since we were shooting in a mall, we went guerilla-style with this one. Anyone seen the Mall Tour bonus feature on the Dawn of the Dead DVD? The one where Ken Foree’s giving a tour of the mall, shot by a distant handheld camera. You can barely hear him. It’s pretty sloppy. Ours is slightly better.
I love the “Tiger Uppercut” shirt.. lol
I’m surprised there are still recognizable landmarks after so long,
Great Vid guys! it’s cool to see the mall where it was filmed at. Especially when you are like me and live on the other side of the country! Great work
I’ve always wanted to visit this mall. nice video and thanks for showing me what it’s like.
Very entertaining video, Mike and James. Keep up the good work.
I can’t even take pictures at the mall without someone telling me to stop. How the hell did you shoot such an in-depth BTS?
Glad to see you enjoying what little bit of Hollywood we have here in the Pittsburgh area.
It’s creepy to drive past that place at night, I always wonder what’s going on in there at dark. haha!
- Especially when you are like me and live on the other side of the country!
- Even more when you are like me and live on the other side of the GLOBE!
haha you guys are genious
I’m glad to see that you where able to film inside the mall without running into any trouble.
Fucken A, you guys! The mall is surprisingly the same considering it was thirty-two years ago, whoooaaaa! Kick ass video!
Finally! Saw this on Project Twenty1
You should have interviewed some of the people to see how many even knew where they were. Great stuff though.
You sholud join the zombiewalk at the Monroeville Mall. I was there last year while I was shooting a doc about the holiday Halloween. It was so awesome. Thousands of people were dressed up and acting like zombies. Braaaaaaiiiiiinnnnnnsssssss!
Greetings from Germany
OH MAN! im local to the area and grew up in this mall practically. when i was younger the mall was much like it was in the film so i know where pretty much everything that happened in the film actually occured! you guys did a awesome job but actually the large circular fountain was on the opposite end of the mall from where you guys had guessed! haha
i noticed somebody already mentioned the zombiewalk but it absolutely something worth checking out if you get a chance to this year. did you also by any chance get to check out the “monroeville zombies” exhibit inside the time and space toy store? i can’ t imagine you guys wondering around the mall and not seeing it but it would have been a shame if you missed it….
awesome video! words cant explain how hard i wish i would have ran into you guys that day haha
Great video, guys! Keep up the good work!
I’ve wanted to visit there myself, but it’s unlikely I’ll ever get the chance. Thanks for letting us share the experience!
I never realized how close that place was to me. only 30-40 minutes from Pittsburgh.
Dude these little micro Doc’s are awsome! Any plans on going to the mall from the Dawn of the Dead remake?
Nice surprise at the end!
Very sweet video, I love seeing how older “movie sets” look now.
There’s another mall in Frackville, PA, that gives me the same 1970s vibe as this one. Hasn’t been updated much over the last few decades, but they sadly removed the Chick-Fil-A last year. Barely any stores left, but the movie theater is still operating, last I checked.
If you’re a PA native or just passing through, definitely check it out!
Nice one
Wow that’s so cool. I didn’t even know it was still standing. That must be an awesome feeling to know that someone had their brains blown out their head right around the corner. Knowing that they were filming during the night and then having to clean up by morning must have beem annoying and grueling work. You are one lucky fucking guy James.
That’s cool. I like how it was harder to find some of the stuff. I was surprised to hear that they shot the film when the mall was closed! Must have been tough work, but they pulled it off.
What’s funny was that I had the feeling Cinemassacre was going to be posting something new today. I guess I have a built-in “Cinemassacre Instinct”.
And, Jesus Fucking Christ, you talked to Tom Savini AGAIN?! That’s a fucking world record!
That mall would be uber-cool to go to! Imagine if they had a Dawn of the Dead reenactment every year, that would be a real hoot!
James, I hope you had a chance to enjoy a Primanti’s sandwich while you were in the Pittsburgh area.
