Back online after severe weather

Wow, I had a stressful weekend. I was driving to a monster convention Friday afternoon when a severe storm hit us and ripped through the east coast. I heard there were tornados. The electricity at my house was knocked out until Sunday night. Luckily, it didn’t affect me a whole lot, but Cinemassacre.com has been down since. (I self-host from my basement, so with no electricity, there’s no power to my servers, and no website.) Now it seems like we’re back and things should return to normal. Here’s a blog video we shot earlier today, when we were still powerless and trying to figure out how to inform everyone. (Footage from the trip is coming soon, sometime.)

In Soviet Russia, I hit the storm

YOU WERE IN PITTSBURGH????!! CRAP! I WISH I WOULD'VE KNOW THAT!

Yeah no shit. Up here in St. Paul (MN) the same thing happened back Thursday/Friday, a few days before it hit you guys. I'm from Connecticut originally and I can tell you the whether that passes through here is unlike anything else. I was wondering if I had to get on my ACUs and start putting down sand bags because our streets were flooded and my unit in downtown is right off the Mississippi.

Haha.. i cant believe that happened! but isn't that always the way of things. Glad it all worked out.

thats a awesome story james!

...Yeah, I THOUGHT something was weird, several days back, when I went to check out Cinemassacre.com. Glad to know everything's okay James, and thanks for the heads-up video - that was thoughtful. :)

Wow, I was curious what happened to the website, but i NEVER expected you to make a video about, this is awesome! Thanks,
DJ

thanks god your ok, james. and know what, its good to be back :)

I live in Central PA about 2 1/2 hours away from Pittsburgh and we got hit pretty hard here as well. The guy who lives across the street from me has a 14 foot aluminum boat that got blown 30-40 feet high into the trees behind his house. It was crazy how many trees were down, some of them were just ripped in half. Crazy!

Just wondering who you're hiring to do the wiring on the generator. Make sure it's someone who know's what they're doing and can install a proper Transfer Switch. You wouldn't want to accidentally kill a Utility worker while your generator is running.

That is exactly what I was thinking James. "What the hell happened to the website" It's nice to know you bought a generator, just so your fans could browse through Cinemassacre. Thanks!

im not sure what it is but it looks like mike is holding a smoke

I hope you had fun at the Bash anyway.

Be careful with generators and computer PSUs. Regular consumer generators don't deliver very "clean" power. Depending on how $$ your server rack is, you might want to put a power conditioner in between the generator and the server(s). This is why the generator's manual talks about hair dryers and refrigerators, not our internet friend computers. Take care AVGN! - Brad

New Episode of "You know what's Bullshit?"
Murphy's law and how it seems to encourage the stupidest things to happen.
Storm knocks out power, buy a generator and not have a need for it anymore, get a blowout on the highway and believe have everything to replace your tire but realize you left the tire iron and the rod to your jack at home while everyone that could have helped you turns out to be a prick and aid you =p

Wow thank god the website is alright! hahah to bad u were to fast on buying the Generator :D

How did you use a Credit Card machine with no power to buy a generator to get the power on? :P paradox

good to have you guys back!

That sucks! At least you got the generator. LOL

hey james, you should do a you know whats bullshit segment about tornadoes XD.

This is just fuel for the fire.

James,

I don't know if getting a generator will do you any good... Your servers may have power, but that doesn't necessarily mean Verizon FIOS will be up and running if it's a widespread outage. I live in CA and I have Verizon FIOS as well, and I also have a generator... When our power went, I had my equipment up and running, but despite everything on my end working, I still wasn't able to get internet. The central offices nearby were down as well from the power outage.

You're probably wasting your money =\

Next week is the first Wednesday of the month.

You know what that means?

NEW AVGN EPISODE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol, don't be so rude with billistic, I guess he doesn't know why james host his own site, to the people that doesn't know why: Well.. Cinemassacre.com has come to a state were it's actually cheaper for James to pay a super crazy bad ass internet connection than pay a host service that charges by the amount of transferred data, how cool is that?
Also the suggestion of using dreamhost cracked me up.. I'm sure cinemassacre would need a much higher profile hosting service, it was like asking.. hey.. james! why you bother cooking in your house? just go to mcdonalds for your food needs!
Actually i think its super cool, how many people do you know that have a super popular website hosted in their basement? also how many people apart from big enterprises can claim that paying the electricity bills and a very high bandwith connection is actually cheaper for them than using 3rd party services, thats crazy! and amazing.

look on the bright side... only 3 months til Monster Madness 2010!!!!

Looks like James became a power ranger.

Well at least you've got the generator. XD

I live in NY and I think we got hit with that same storm cause when I was driving the next morning I noticed that half of the traffic lights weren't working. But I never actually heard the storm when it was happening.

Billistic, grow up. He is saving a lot of money by personally hosting it and he has a wife you insensitive moron.

Dude, just get hosted with dreamhost, it's cheap enough and you won't be sapping your bandwidth for all that porn you should be downloading.

Wow... I haven't been able to jack off for a week.... now that AVGN is back, I got my bottle of Lube, and I am ready to lay waste to my keyboard!

lol.. jk

Either way... I have gotten so many people here into AVGN... the whole office is ready for wednesday, we are having an AVGN party.. I work in data analysis... so we are all nerds!!

tap into the phone lines and suck power for the servers from there when the grid goes down.... :P

I was scared... :P

At least you guys are back and safe. Can not wait for new videos and new AVGN next wed. Keep up the good work.

neat! I was wandering where you'd gone. I was checking back to see if I could watch some old AVGN, for the billionth time. I thought you'd had a nervous meltdown and shut the site down. 8^O

Murphy's Law ;)
But nice that we received this video

Glad no one got hurt in the storm. I totally pictured this Twister like video of you guys outrunning tornadoes. And the generator thing is hilarious...sad, but hilarious!

Welcome back James! It was crazy not to have the site up for a few days.

And nice to see that you guys drive Toyota. ;)

Nice to see that you are back. It was a bit quiet there for a while.

You self-host, wow I didn't know that =o. That's an interesting image, a server perpetually on with all of this site in your basement. I wasn't expecting an interesting let alone any explanation as to why the site was down for two or so days. It was frustrating being unable to access Cinemassacre.com, I have only the 2006 episodes to watch and I have watched every AVGN video ^_^b

figures. what a pile of bullshit. putrid irony lol/.

@James (Who else?)
:O The Almighty!!!!!!!

Its not too old. Its still a couple months until that posts birthday isn't it?

@Gagarin
Web hosting services are extremely expensive to support the amount of traffic I get.

Here's an old video that explains the situation.

The last part was funny and real bitter irony right there! I bet the first thought that popped into your mind after seeing that was "WHAT WAS I THINKING?!". Hahaha, still, nice to see you back online. Don't regret getting the generator James. At least you got back up in case something like that happens again.
