Back online after severe weather

James / June 27th, 2010

Wow, I had a stressful weekend. I was driving to a monster convention Friday afternoon when a severe storm hit us and ripped through the east coast. I heard there were tornados. The electricity at my house was knocked out until Sunday night. Luckily, it didn’t affect me a whole lot, but Cinemassacre.com has been down since. (I self-host from my basement, so with no electricity, there’s no power to my servers, and no website.) Now it seems like we’re back and things should return to normal. Here’s a blog video we shot earlier today, when we were still powerless and trying to figure out how to inform everyone. (Footage from the trip is coming soon, sometime.)

Shit, it doesn’t work! But I don’t care as long as you and your family and friends are doing ok. Me and the fans have missed you James. Fucking welcome back, man, fucking welcome back!

That’s funny. Always seems to happen that way. Murphy’s law is a bitch! Glad you’re back up and running, this site is part of my everyday routine and I was going through withdrawl.

Good to see y’all back! I’d been worried there for a second. Hope you didn’t put yourself out too much on the generator–if us fans can help in any way, just let us know.

    June 27, 2010 at 10:16 pm

The Taxman sold you that generator. I’ll be there in a few days with the 950 bucks you spent on that generator.

I thought the website was getting an update but now that I think about it there have been a few storms. Similar sorts of things have happened to me before. Good to hear you’re back James. 🙂

    June 27, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Yeah, South Central PA had some wild storms, too. No power loss, though.

And lol at the power coming on right when the card was swiped.

Hey man, I know I’m new to leaving comments but I just wanted to say the important thing is you’re safe. I’ve been watching your videos for years and have enjoyed them thoroughly. I missed Cinemassacre and you do a lot of great things but again I’m glad you’re not hurt and continue to do great things. Stay Cool!

  • June 27, 2010 at 10:42 pm

LOL, no offense but when you first said you were at a convention in Pittsburgh I began to wonder what was going on as the only con I knew that was going on at the time in the ‘burgh was the furry convention, Anthrocon. You need to specify that you were in Butler man! I know it not far from Pittsburgh but that was a case of Location Location Location LOL.

Anyway, good to hear that everyone’s okay and I hope Western PA served you nicely!

  • You Can Just Walk Over It

    June 27, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I can sleep easily knowing the Cinemassacre family will buy a generator for constant server stability before thinking about the spoiled food in their refrigerator. That’s why we come to the site every day!

Also, this is unrelated to anything recent on the site, but on Jeopardy! a few weeks ago, there was a category dealing with monster movies. Some of the answers (questions) included The Blob, Godzilla and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It was surreal to know them all right when the clue came on screen. That’s the power Cinemassacre has on us fans. We learn more from James than any Sunday Funday teacher could dream of teaching.

We understand and more importantly all of you guys are alright after that. But I was also LOL’d from your story when you decided to bought a Generator then the power is back XD I know that feeling. But you’re right at least you have a back-up now (^^)

Keep it up guys and thanks!

  • June 27, 2010 at 11:10 pm

Now we can finally see that new Spike video that was supposed to be up already when the blackout happened.

While waiting, I finally got a chance to watch some Godzilla films. Didn’t have time to rent them all nor I couldn’t find all of them on Netflix, but I decided to watch whichever film I can watch online including Netflix Streaming and Crackle. So far, some of them range from OK to pretty good. I guess you can say I’m not as big of a Godzilla fan as you are James, but it’s worth trying out anyway!

    June 27, 2010 at 11:27 pm

As long as no one died and or got hurt. We’re f-ing glad to see you back.
Kind of ironic that the moment you bought the generator is when the power came back on.

  • June 27, 2010 at 11:31 pm

I lost power too. The tornadoes were crazy. Never expected that.

  • strint519

    June 27, 2010 at 11:34 pm

  • June 28, 2010 at 12:44 am

Yea man, We live near ya and that was an amazing storm. Luckily we were safe in a hospital and my daughter was being born. Not fun when the power flickers and my wife is in labor..fucking freaky man. Glad your servers are back online and you were safe and not hit by random trees.

  • NickReaper

    June 28, 2010 at 12:56 am

  • June 28, 2010 at 12:57 am

  • travo

    June 28, 2010 at 5:04 am

its good the power came back on because with the generator powering your servers and modems, they wouldve had on but the internet would still be down because the outside box your modem connects to wouldve still been without power probably.

Oh, thanks God, everything’s alright! It’s really funny thing with generator but anyway – it will be useful. Yeah, everybody said that but you guys should shoot this tornado with an arrows)) Hope to see some new video soon)

P.S: I have a problem with login.php page in Opera – I can’t login because browser always readressing me to ‘action=register’ procedure. In other browsers everything works correctly.

    June 28, 2010 at 6:51 am

I live in PA and there were tornadoes at my house, it was pretty gnarly. We didn’t have internet for like 2 days which blew.

  • FinallyGAF

    June 28, 2010 at 7:21 am

You should give that generator a name, so next time a blackout occurs it says on this site: “Currently running on ‘insert name’ – the generator.”

How about ‘Scruffy – The Generator’

  • June 28, 2010 at 7:46 am

Glad you guys are alright, now you have that generator in the event that crap like this happens again.

  • June 28, 2010 at 7:48 am

I knew it would be something to do with the tornados xD
theres loads of people on youtube who think your DEAD! theres loads of R.I.P james comments on your youtube videos.

I guess you live around Atco (I live in hammonton). My brother lives there and said he had heard about a small tornado that went through, i think their power was restored on saturday though.

Glad you are all ok though, no real damage to the house or anything.

  • June 28, 2010 at 8:29 am

    I was wondering wth happened
    Thank god you’re all right

  • Spokavriel

    June 28, 2010 at 8:52 am

A good point was brought up. That Box on the Ceiling which the internet goes through. You know the one where James put the cable in his mouth so all the traffic for the site was passing through his mouth.

Does that one have any backup power? Because if it doesn’t then no matter how well that Car Battery you had to keep the server computer going before works the connection still has a point of failure you don’t have a redundant power supply on.

When you get the Generator in place is it going to be set up where it is only really giving power to the server? Or will you have the time and cabling to run it to the modem and maybe the fridge too?

Don’t want all your groceries going bad after all. 3 Necessities of survival Food Water Shelter. Kinda hard to do much for long without them.

    the fuckin’ generator

    ahahahah…

  • Masamune7vii

    June 28, 2010 at 10:05 am

HAHAHAHAHA i dont mean to laugh at ur plight but i iknow exactly what ur talking about! i dont know if its luck, karma, some god, or maybe even myself! but it seems that if I am waiting for something, someone or something to happen i can wait for hours or days and that object or event will never take place. no matter how diligent i am, its almost like the longer i wait the more time it will take to get to me!
So eventualy i give up faith, much like you (i didnt buy a genorator) and walk away or find some other activity other than loosing my shit over something that should have already happend already. so Karma or god or.. whatever… decides that the very SECOND i give up, she is going to grant all my wildest wishes and bring that fucking object or person (or electricity in ur case) to my doorstep!
I personaly loose all controll at this point and murder my neighborhood while screaming “WHY!?” then i go to the object and stare at it as hard as i can. Praying an OPTIC BLAST will burst out of my fire red rage filled eyes and destroy everything i see/hate.
so now when i wait for stuff i always ask myself, should i just give up now so the damn thing or person will just fucking get here already?

  • Mr_Nabby

    June 28, 2010 at 11:01 am

Oh, I didn’t know that you had to have a server to have a website running, i thought it was all uploaded to the Internet.

But that makes me wonder, when (and IF) James desides to permenantly pull the plug of Cinemassacre.com, will all of the videos be gone forever?

just glad you’re ok can’t wait for your next video

  • June 28, 2010 at 12:31 pm

    @Jakabok
haha. Oh yeah a cheetahman came and shot the tornado with an arrow. That’s when it stopped.

    @Chaser
Oh damn it. I kneeled down. Forgot that causes tornadoes to come, especially when facing a rock wall, holding a red crystal. Thanks for the laughs!

About the generator, I’m not sure how much it will help if the internet service is down too. It was mostly for personal use, just so we could have some electricity. You never know how dependent you are on electricity until it’s gone for a whole weekend. I can’t even imagine how awful it must be to experience a tsunami or major earthquake. Gladly, everyone is okay.

Also, yes Butler, PA. (Somewhere near Pittsburgh) The video was not well-rehearsed. Off the top of my head, I don’t always choose my words correctly. Monster Bash. We got lots of good footage. Talked with some monster/horror celebrities and visited some locations from Romero’s “-of the Dead” films.

    @ Seabass
It was a rental car for the trip. There were 4 people and a whole trunk full of suitcases and camera equipment.

Glad to be back. Hope the site won’t ever go down like that again. But in case it happens again when I’m away from home, I’m going to try and get another server installed at another location as a backup. We’ve learned a lot this weekend how technology sucks. Not to mention, our GPS which took us through some desolate scary spots, Texas Chainsaw Massacre style.

    Thanks everyone!

We love you guys and are really glad you’re well. Please take care, ok?

@James Man, I’m so glad you guys are safe. I’m a great fan of your work, and my youtube channel kinda proves that. Your awesome, and I hope you don’t have to endure anything else like that. I’ve never seen a tornado before, but if their bad enough to bring a website down, they must be pretty awful. This is the first time I’ve heard of this tornado to be truthful. Simon Belmont must have caused it.

“As soon as I get batteries, the power will come on!”

The last part was funny and real bitter irony right there! I bet the first thought that popped into your mind after seeing that was “WHAT WAS I THINKING?!”. Hahaha, still, nice to see you back online. Don’t regret getting the generator James. At least you got back up in case something like that happens again.

    @Gagarin
Web hosting services are extremely expensive to support the amount of traffic I get.

Here’s an old video that explains the situation.

You self-host, wow I didn’t know that =o. That’s an interesting image, a server perpetually on with all of this site in your basement. I wasn’t expecting an interesting let alone any explanation as to why the site was down for two or so days. It was frustrating being unable to access Cinemassacre.com, I have only the 2006 episodes to watch and I have watched every AVGN video ^_^b

  • June 29, 2010 at 3:15 am

Nice to see that you are back. It was a bit quiet there for a while.

  • June 29, 2010 at 3:19 am

And nice to see that you guys drive Toyota. 😉

neat! I was wandering where you’d gone. I was checking back to see if I could watch some old AVGN, for the billionth time. I thought you’d had a nervous meltdown and shut the site down. 8^O

Dude, just get hosted with dreamhost, it’s cheap enough and you won’t be sapping your bandwidth for all that porn you should be downloading.

  • June 29, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Billistic, grow up. He is saving a lot of money by personally hosting it and he has a wife you insensitive moron.

I live in NY and I think we got hit with that same storm cause when I was driving the next morning I noticed that half of the traffic lights weren’t working. But I never actually heard the storm when it was happening.

    June 30, 2010 at 4:49 am

Lol, don’t be so rude with billistic, I guess he doesn’t know why james host his own site, to the people that doesn’t know why: Well.. Cinemassacre.com has come to a state were it’s actually cheaper for James to pay a super crazy bad ass internet connection than pay a host service that charges by the amount of transferred data, how cool is that?
Also the suggestion of using dreamhost cracked me up.. I’m sure cinemassacre would need a much higher profile hosting service, it was like asking.. hey.. james! why you bother cooking in your house? just go to mcdonalds for your food needs!
Actually i think its super cool, how many people do you know that have a super popular website hosted in their basement? also how many people apart from big enterprises can claim that paying the electricity bills and a very high bandwith connection is actually cheaper for them than using 3rd party services, thats crazy! and amazing.

    James,

I don’t know if getting a generator will do you any good… Your servers may have power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Verizon FIOS will be up and running if it’s a widespread outage. I live in CA and I have Verizon FIOS as well, and I also have a generator… When our power went, I had my equipment up and running, but despite everything on my end working, I still wasn’t able to get internet. The central offices nearby were down as well from the power outage.

You’re probably wasting your money =\

New Episode of “You know what’s Bullshit?”
Murphy’s law and how it seems to encourage the stupidest things to happen.
Storm knocks out power, buy a generator and not have a need for it anymore, get a blowout on the highway and believe have everything to replace your tire but realize you left the tire iron and the rod to your jack at home while everyone that could have helped you turns out to be a prick and aid you =p

  • zyrotoran

    June 30, 2010 at 4:16 pm

    -NOT aid you-

Be careful with generators and computer PSUs. Regular consumer generators don’t deliver very “clean” power. Depending on how $$ your server rack is, you might want to put a power conditioner in between the generator and the server(s). This is why the generator’s manual talks about hair dryers and refrigerators, not our internet friend computers. Take care AVGN! – Brad

    July 2, 2010 at 12:34 am

That is exactly what I was thinking James. “What the hell happened to the website” It’s nice to know you bought a generator, just so your fans could browse through Cinemassacre. Thanks!

  • xcoregamerskillz

    July 2, 2010 at 2:43 am

Just wondering who you’re hiring to do the wiring on the generator. Make sure it’s someone who know’s what they’re doing and can install a proper Transfer Switch. You wouldn’t want to accidentally kill a Utility worker while your generator is running.

I live in Central PA about 2 1/2 hours away from Pittsburgh and we got hit pretty hard here as well. The guy who lives across the street from me has a 14 foot aluminum boat that got blown 30-40 feet high into the trees behind his house. It was crazy how many trees were down, some of them were just ripped in half. Crazy!

  • July 2, 2010 at 5:24 am

thanks god your ok, james. and know what, its good to be back 🙂

  • July 2, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Wow, I was curious what happened to the website, but i NEVER expected you to make a video about, this is awesome! Thanks,

Yeah no shit. Up here in St. Paul (MN) the same thing happened back Thursday/Friday, a few days before it hit you guys. I’m from Connecticut originally and I can tell you the whether that passes through here is unlike anything else. I was wondering if I had to get on my ACUs and start putting down sand bags because our streets were flooded and my unit in downtown is right off the Mississippi.

  • July 8, 2010 at 12:52 am

YOU WERE IN PITTSBURGH????!! CRAP! I WISH I WOULD’VE KNOW THAT!
