The Dragon in my Dreams

This is sort of a psycho-analysis of myself. It’s about my earliest memory and what drove me to make movies.

Special thanks to everyone who submitted music. I had plenty of stuff to listen through and will always look back if I need more.

Also thanks to the workers for allowing me to film there. They told me the dragon is being moved to the front of the park. Nevertheless, it was my last time seeing it the way I remembered.

UPDATE: I’ve been told the dragon has been successfully moved to the front of the park, on the sidewalk. Unfortunately, it’s a bit shorter now. It’s been cut down in size. I’ll always remember it the way it was before.

OUTTAKES VIDEO. I posted a video of some of the raw footage which captures the feeling of shock and disbelief I had coming back to the park on the same day the dragon was being moved.

this is inspiring, i think its important to find that place inside, before you start creating a place on the outside.

This video is so inspiring... You can really feel the emotions radiating from James and his passion for film making. I can't wait to see the big movie and see this passion in action.

James, I think you should know that everyone has that one thing they want to hold onto. That one piece from when you were little, when you were still some innocent little kid. It's hard to let it go, and most people know that if they've gone so far as twelve years old. I'm sure everyone here is happy for you, and a little impressed, that you could do it.

All of your serious videos really inspire me as a person, to do what I want to do (I'm a writer), and find what I want in life. I guess what I'm trying to say, James, for everyone here, is thank you. And good luck. We all consider ourselves your friends, and you should call on us whenever you need help with anything. We're behind you.

PS: Also, sorry about not being able to donate. I don't have any money at the moment.

You Mr Rolfe is a movie producing genius! The moment you sat down infront of the Dragon made my heart so warm and sorrowfull. It looked like you beat the dragon and you parted as friends and being almost a new man from the experience. Im certain that you will become the next big name in movies soon

What is the name of the song that plays when you look at the dragon?

I probably watch this video every day since i've seen it.

Ever since I was a child I was fixated on video game bosses and I never before made the correlation between bosses/dragons and any challenge in life that needs to be met. It's needless to say that you are an inspiration to all and a beacon of light to nerds of all genres.

I actually have been struggling in college to find a direction for my life. I've always been interested in writing and playing video games and drawing and creating stupid things like board games where once you get to a certain spot on the board you have to load up a game and beat a boss in it. Film is a culmination of writing, visuals, atmosphere, and creative vision. I also learned from your videos that likeminded people exist everywhere, and the world of filmography could be where I can meet them. It makes me want to make my own site and upload homemade videos for people to enjoy without expectation of reward. Anything done in life should have heart behind it or you're wasting your time.

If James Rolfe can do it, so can I.

god...i was thrilled to the bones! though this story has no obvious similarities with my life, still it's soooooo strong emotionally.....I even cried all the way after the dragon appeared, can you believe this?! i guess what makes this movie so heartwarming is it's sincerity....and it's so sad yet inspiring!! Thank you!!

I've been on a nostalgia trip for a few years now and I recently discovered your videos and this website. I love all of your videos, you are funny, informative and genuine. And I think after watching this film I know a little bit more about why I enjoy watching all your work. It reminds me of the good 'ol days. Thank you James!

This is only the second time I've watched this, the first time was so long ago and it was so emotional that I could barely take it . Now I still get chocked up and feel like crying like a baby.

Mr Rolfe, I envy you .Because I have great difficulties recalling the one item or object that might have shaped me as a person. Although I do seem to remember what might've been the earliest of my nightmares(Forgive my poor grammar, I'm Norwegian :P).

I remember as a little kid ,I had this lamp attached to the roof. It was shaped like a cloud of some sort. In the dark it looked like it had some kind of a face. Of course like many others I was afraid to go to sleep and had a tremendous fear of the dark so that might've been my imagination. But in my nightmare the lamp would silently start to move around and then quietly flap what looked like wings and fly down towards me...

As unfortunately vague as my childhood memories are, I've never forgotten this nightmare.

Ever since this site came to the web I've paid attention, even before you posted some of your movies online. Just by reading about them, looking at those stills from your first movies and upwards, makes anyone want to grab a camera. Seeing this movie....I'm almost speechless. When you make your feature film, I'm gonna see it as soon as it comes out in the cinema or on DVD!

Well done! (and sorry for the long text)

Hey james love this video and your cinemassacre 200 video has inspired me alot! if you get the time i would really appreciate if you could like my media facebook page.

i wont message you or bug you or anything haha

anyways really love this video and never seen you this emotionall before! how did you keep your emotions inside and i dont know how you managed to not cry because i know i did :,(

hope you movie is like this :)

i have these emotions with music and proud of being a musician!! thanx James keep doing what you do!

I don't even know what to say, this was not only art as another amazing, well-made video, but definitely something more than that. I feel as I and probably everyone who watched, were kicked back and reminded of that one special thing that gave us so much inspiration when we were young, like the dragon was for you. For me, I think its the home alone movies, I've watched the first two at least 500 times, and they were the movies I watched all the time when I was very little and when I was sick, I get that nostalgic feeling every time I watch them. I feel as they were that one thing that could always comfort me and they still do today. I'm an avid movie collector now, and though my collection is nothing close to yours or Mike's, its quite extensive and I think that comes from home alone, I just love all movies I see and can't get enough of them. Thank You for posting this video James, its always nice to know more about the man behind the camera that brings all of us so much entertainment and laughter, and also I feel it reminded all of us of those childhood memories and how we should never forget them, because they helped make us into who we are. I'm 18 now, almost 19 and watching this and your other avgn/cinemassacre videos always remind me of when me and my older brother would play SNES Turtles in Time or N64 Goldeneye, or Ocarina of Time, thanks also James for bringing back those good memories. Since my brother showed me your videos a couple years ago, I've become addicted to all of them; you and all the people you work with really are talented, I know for sure that you are gonna go places. Thanks Again for enlightening us all, you're a good guy James. - Adam

That was emotional man, you did one heck of a job. The playground of my youth was renovated about 10~12 years ago, doesn't even look the same as it once did. The only thing remaining is a tree off to the side we use to play under, that tree holds a LOT of memories.

Horifyingly depressing, thank you James, I can t say why watching this makes me so depressed, it makes me tumble into a black hole of dispair which I cannot escape, you should be more aware of this when you post something so existentially black with denial. Thank god for Super Maio World and Vizzed where I can play games for free www.vizzed.com/vizzedboard/retro/game.php?id=8616&system=snes&name=Super-Mario-World&ref=65348

I am so down now only looking to the light and a few nerd videos can lift my depression you have let me down

All of your work has inspired me. Im 16 right now and ive been watching your videos since i was 12. I love making movie, and i hope to make a feature film someday. I love old games, movie, music from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Back to the future being my top favorite movie. so i love your AVGN episodes. Ive watched almost every single one.

I loved this video.

cobaltnightsky

is completely right, thankyou James for sharing videos like this, and pointing out that where we come from shouldnt be forgotten and makes us who we are.

I like these videos. They have real heart and thanks again James for thinking enough of your fans to share something so deeply personal.

Its also so interesting to learn about what motivates you as a film maker, but more importantly as a human being.

Excellent work man!

James, I’ve been a very long time viewer of your work, and I’ve always loved it. this is a touching, sad, happy, inspiring film of yours, and it shows me that i can do whatever i want to, just like you. You always wanted to do film, and now its your life. And when the AVGN movie is finished, your goal of having that feature film will be completed. You are a very good film maker and entertainer, and i will always continue to watch all of your work, you informed me on so many different things. Games, movies, little facts, camera work and editing, things like that. I appreciate what you do, and i like your connection with the viewers. Thank you!

Wow. Really great. All I have to say really its awesome to tape something like that.

This reminded me of my fountain of youth.

Wow. This almost made me cry. Great stuff, I bet some day you'll make an awesome movie thats feature length just like you want! I'll make sure and go see it!

Great stuff James, I always get kind a knot in my throat every time I hear something about someone finding something about their childhood. And it really sucks how they're moving the dragon, but at first I thought they were getting rid of it.

Amazing stuff, you are an amazing film person.

James Duncan Rolfe, You are my role model, and the reason I'm in New York Film Academy to become a screenwriter. Thank you for your insporation on me.

This is how I felt when Geauga Lake Amusement Park in Ohio where I live got closed down in 2004. When I was little, I used to go there and I went there one more time just a few months before the park closed. It'll live on in my dreams, I'm sure. It is where I met many of my current friends, including a guy whom I just found out is my cousin. Unforgettable.

Being 27 with 30 fast approaching I was very deeply moved by this video. I love all your stuff but this is one of the best so far. I'm a huge fan and I hope you get the opportunity to make movies on the big screen soon. <3

Wow, that was really deep. You know the funny thing? That ET in the Window thing, same thing happened to me when I was a kid. Every time I tell some one there like "ET? How could he be scary?" Its nice to know I'm not the only one who saw him LOL. Keep Up the good work James, you are an inspiration to me, and seeing this video made me want to register to your site so I could leave this comment. God Bless.

Man, your story was really touching. Too bad the dragon was removed :(

Wow , I watched this a while a go and I had ti re-watch it , I had a little tear come out my left eye...
You're such an inspiration to myself and to keep going making movies is also my dream my first memories are playing super Mario world on this really star filled night sky for some reason...
You're just an amazing person I was speechless throughout the whole thing and while I have PC's and all that junk to make videos (I'm 15) , all you had was you're imagination and passion for what you did , if I one day ever go to the States I would be honored to shake your hand .
You´ll probably never read this but for all that you do , all that enjoyment that you send throughout the world the fact that you are such an Idol or inspiration that you send for me and others, and that when something bad happens like the earthquake in Japan you always pitch in and help however you can , all I can say is:
Thank you James ...

This is absolutely extraordinary. How that dragon went through your dreams and then reflected itself through your whole life.
Moreover, the day you visit, is the day it is leaving. Amazing James. Amazing.

James,

This movie inspired me to follow my dreams of becoming a director. I'm planning on doing the 48 Hour Film Project this year, do you have any advice? I am a huge fan of yours and I look up to you. I enjoy AVGN but the stuff you do behind the camera is so amazing and inspiring. I really like The Deader The Better and Legend Of The Blue Hole is the best pilot of any show I have ever scene, if i owned a network I'd buy it in a heart beat. So please follow your dreams and make that feature film, you are an amazing writer and an amazing director.

Sincerely,
Mike Willis

James I really love when you do these type of films, no matter what the subject is. They are always inspiring, and really makes the viewer think about the subject and how it pertains to their lives. Great work. One of my favorite fillms that you have done.

Truly, I am touched. That was so moving and heartwarming that, like many others, I was almost brought to tears. One of your more sensitive movies, for sure. Thanks for the insight to yourself, James. :,)

Wow James, this is mind blowing. I found my self almost crying at the end. I truly do think fate is what brought you there on that important Tuesday. James, you are my role model, and you are my hero. Im in 6th grade now, (11) and I just want to let you know that I have showed all of my friends your movie reviews, and your game reviews, and we all adore you. You inspired me to make movies, not that good of movies, but movies that mean a lot to me. I praise you James. Now your a bit older, but you definitely know how to live life. Keep on Rockin'!!

Amazing man, simply amazing (I"m from brazil excuse me from my bad writing) Is so good to see this side of you, I kept wondering how was your life before de AGVN, now I know a little bit more, because you really are a interesting person and character. One of my favorite things is watching your videos, and I congratulate you for your 300 videos and a happy birthday in advance... Thanks for good moments, and knowledge aside from making me laugh and teaching me about movies I never heard... you made me remember my own childhood and dreams, which was great... Thanks a lot James keep up the good work... and for a moment there I thought you're going to take that dragon home.

I was choked up watching, so inspiring. I hope he fulfills his life long dream. It's nice to watch a video of his personal life for change.

Wow bro, that was an incredible video; I've always admired your passion for movies. You are sort of a role model for me and i guess for everyone out there who watches your stuff, you've taught us to stick to our dreams and make the most out of them no matter how wild or improbable they appear to be. Moreover, to actually see the source of it is actually very touching and although it hurts my man's pride I admit i had a giant knot in my throat by end of the vid. You are great dude James, keep doing your thing, the effect of your work on people's life is more profound than you know it. Godspeed.

This video inspired me, gave me chills, hell, it almost made me cry. I've been following your work since I discovered AVGN in 2006, but this video was the best video you ever made, it literally gave me the chills. If I ever find the time and/or money to come to the US, I will be honored to (maybe) shake your hand. Thanks to you, I've started making some short movies as well. I'm only 16, so when I started making films, I had everything at my disposal: A computer, editing software, HD camcorder, you had to do it with your imagination and with what you could build. You probably won't read this, but I just wanted to say thank you for being a source of inspiration, and just somebody I look up to. I wish you the best of luck in filmmaking, and just life in general. Thank you.

This is the 4th time I've watched this video and this time it made me cry. Beautiful stuff James. I hope I can find my fountain of youth when I turn 30, it's coming soon.

James, I only know you through your video. Your make me laugh, you teach me things about cinema, you almost made me cried. Yeah, I'm sensitive, but who cares? Anyway, I am truly touched by this video because I feel that you share real emotions with us, from the internet, all over the world. You point a very important thing in life: from where it all begins. For all of us. Perhaps this dragon was the trigger for your creativity. Perhaps you would be looking for yourself, your deep within, without it. James, I don't know you, but I feel very honored to know you through my 15" screen. If I get the chance to come to the US, I'll make sure to find you and play an AVGN with you, "yeah, a fucking AVGN episode with you, that would be fucking awesome" ^^ I only wish you one thing: that you can go on with what you like. And I wish for all of us that we will be watching, one day, some James Rolfe movies in cinemas. Cheers from France, keep on going James.

Awesome and inspiring!! my first memory is also a dream!

Hope you put this on the next DVD you release

That was an awesome video, really touching.

I've been listening to the video game reviews for several years now. My son is really into them. As a therapist, I've often wondered just who the guy who did all that ranting really was. Now, just as I suspected, I see. What a beautifully, sensitive, well documented and inspiring piece of work! Bravo, Mr. Video Game Nerd!
