Love the nes themes going on in the background.

I had the pong console from Radioshack. I always wanted to use the bigger controller. I wish i still had it.

Best first scene in a AVGN episode, ever.

I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW THAT WORKS????

What?

Seriously?

Maybe there are 4 "lines" / "wires" in that cable?

I mean have you ever seen USB on a pc?

USB also has 2 lines for power and 2 for data, and its only 1 cable...

ThrowntoReality 15 pts

googlejustsucks Except it's 120 volts running through the wire here!!

c64kicksass 12 pts

ThrowntoRealitygooglejustsucks Nope, the wall wart transforms it to 9 Volts DC (it says on the box). Now the cable really has just 2 wires running through it. The thing is, that the picture sent to the TV is an RF signal (which is a very high frequency AC current - very high frequency is LITERALLY what VHF stands for btw). You can modulate any AC signal onto a DC signal using decoupling capacitors. The Atari 5200 switchbox also works that way. Also, when the capacitors go bad, which they do after a few decades - hey, that was good quality, today they last 4 years - it can damage the console and/or the TV. thats one of the reasons why it produces sparks when plugging it in, also this is the reason why the picture you got from the 5200 was so bad and also it REALLY caused fires!!! Fuck these boxes. But with a system like that you have no other choice. You're fucked! And if the capacitors die, you might even fry your TV or even worse your whole house!

Sorry for the tech stuff but that's how it works.

Btw I have an Intel Pong console and an Intel TV (there happened to be a import/rebranding company in Germany called "Interelectronics", short Intel.

And I built the maybe smallest PONG Game console on Earth with an AVR. (check Youtube for "Tinypong")

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes. I rewatch it often. :)

Hey James, I had a problem with one of those boxes in my childhood (the fork that goes into the tv was broken), so I cut it and left just the cables, and then I inserted them into the screws of the tv and ta-da, it worked, so that could be a way to use the "broken" pong console

uh, james... seems some bots made it past the captcha. :p

The Fairchild Channel F has two built-in games that come on if there's no cartridge in. One is Pong (which is not as much fun, because of the digital controls and the huge pixels) and the other is Hockey or Soccer (which is the one James referred to).
James does not exaggerate when he says that it is intense. It's fucking awesome!
I found my Channel F in the dump, the previous owner cut off the controllers so I had to reverse-engineer the connection.

Now my Channel F takes Atari Controllers! And four of them! Now you can play this game with four players. Played it for hours!

Another thing about the Fairchild: It uses a CPU at 2 MHz and you can plug the games in and out without turning it off. Plug'n'Play, Motherfucker!

Btw. got me a Pong Console off eBay, made by Intel!
(no its not the same Intel that makes microprocessors)

"Tell that box to go fuck itself" lmfao amazing

Grand Theft Auto 4? Excellent choice James.

You played gta 4! i love gta 4 awesome video ive never played pong beofre though

JakeZidel 8 pts

how the FUCK have you never played PONG???????

This is one of his best episodes. I hope he does more console reviews, they are some of his best.

Triangulare cartridges? Pretty cool

ya know, if he wanted to play the tv4 four way video game console he could have just replaced the spade connector on the end! I mean i know it was supposed to be funny but still, it's about $2 for a bag of spade connectors! Or he could just of even cut the box off and wired on a coaxial cable to the game system. But that does not take away from the fact that he's still the fucking nerd!

This is one of my favorite episodes because he plays gta4 on xbox 360 and he tells that box to go fuck itself

James, sorry to bump such an old video, but if you read this could you clarify something for me?

When you show the Fairchild Channel F, you insert Videocard 3, which I've learned is Blackjack. Is pong on there as well, or was that just something to do with editing?

I just got an old Sears Pong console, similar to yours, and we had a blast playing around with it. I'd really love to get my hands on that Channel F, it looks intense.

Keep up the great work, can't wait for the next episode.

You guys know the last console? i´m amazed that james didn´t mention driveby´s

@realitysmaster I know what you mean, dude. I see these games almost all the time since the Star Wars type of games in 2005 with the release of Revenge of the Sith.

5:23- I don't understand the science to that, either.

5:49- "...like some deformed Siamese twin or something. You ever see BasketCase? Well, whatever."

"The controllers dismount, and you have a nice tray to hold your beer. F#ck, almost." I love that line. XD

The TelStar Arcade DOES look madning.

Hilarious. The grand theft auto 4 was funny too.

And now you should do one for the Plug and Play games that are soooo abundant now. Power Rangers, Star Wars, Pac Man, all that ipnilch.

Technology, aint it cool!!? Long live the NERD!!!

I actually got a Radio Shack Electronic TV Scoreboard. When I bought it and got home I opened the battery compartment, it had the same batteries that came with the system. After cleaning it out it works like its brand new! Just out of curiousity, were you able to find an adapter its compatible with? Radio Shack looked up the SKU , and to no surprise it doesnt exist in there inventory anymore.

@mrCrumpet
I'm 17 just now, I'm so much younger then You nad James but I feel I was born too freakin' later. I grew up with SNES emulator and this system is my favourite console EVER! Those games for PS3 are just not so interesting in my opinion.

We owned the Telstar growing up. Here's a link to a picture of us playing. I remember having lots of fun with it. If I remember correctly, it had regular pong, hockey and tennis. We didn't mind the built in controllers.

And then there is ANOTHER ONE (Interton VC3000)
and ANOTHER ONE
and ANOTHER ONE (both selfbuilt):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HbKA0RkQDQ

check for the smallest game of PONG on the smallest console built yet.
(no, it's quite easy to make an even smaller one)

Btw if the ball goes through the paddle, try resetting. My console starts up with 15:15 and does that. Hit reset and it works. Most of the consoles use the same chip AY-8500. The color games use AY-8503. Games that look entirely different don't use that chip.
And yes. My VC3000 is broken and you have to put it in the freezer if you want it to work for even a minute.

DAMMIT! ALL THAT WRITING AND I MISSPELL "HEAR?!?!"

That final console...
Imagine sitting in a room. You have no idea where you are or how you got there. There are no windows, no ventilation ducts. The only light sputters weakly from a bare, flickering bulb overhead. It's musty, smells of mold and there are suspicious stains on the floor that trail to a drain in the center.
You try to move, only to find your hands and legs are restrained with leather cuffs. Through the walls you can here what sound like muffled screams. You are terrified. The door directly in front of you opens and three hooded figures enter, the third one wheeling a creaky metal cart. They stop a few feet in and start talking in low tones. Your blood is pounding in your ears and you can only make out a few words: "organs," "peeling," "messy," "machine..."
Two figures leave. The third wheels the cart closer to you and stops a few feet away. He is breathing heavily and you can smell sweat - his or yours or both you're not sure. He moves his head to within a few inches of yours and looks into your--
aw, screw it. That thing looks like a torture device.

I grew up with the Commendore 64 and Super Nintendo and i gotta say i appreciated them alot cause i have always been a nerd.. but im hooked on the 360 :P

I actually have seen one of those telstar games at a yard sale when i was six, but I was to busy looking at a stuffed pikachu doll to care.

I just bought an APF TV Fun console at a flea market this past Saturday. The thing was mad dusty, and my dad was certain it wouldn't worked. But I hooked it up and sure enough, the console played great. I was surprised at the perfect picture clarity. The only problem the system had was one of the controllers had cut wires on the inside, which I was able to fix.

Great video as always. I didn't know half of these consoles existed.

I found a Radio Shack TV Scoreboard at a flea market a long time ago. Amazingly, it worked after I went through the pain in the ass to set it up. I didn't have any color to my knowledge, but it came with a gun.

they are all so damn similiar

Hay James! I love your work! Can you tell me your Xbox live gamertag? I would LOVE to play Halo with you! You might even go all AVGN on me! LOL!

My parents had the AV Tv Fun console. It was actually pretty cool. I don't know if ours was a "deluxe" edition, but it came with a gun, so it had the 4 pong games plus 2 skeet games. What was nice about those old consoles is that you could fix the controllers with a soldering gun, since they were analog. My dad must have rebuilt those paddles about a dozen times. Same thing with the atari consoles. You could actually remove the casing and have what basically amounted to a poor man's game pad, although the atari 2600 had a 9 pin serial port which was the same standard used on the genesis and the commodore systems like the c64 and Amiga, so all the controllers were interchangable, something that would never happen today.

I still play video games. I grew up with nintendo, genisis and atari . I had fun playing them. Hours were lost playing sonic, mario, zelda and toe jam and earl. I still lose hours playing now.
1.) its 3 am. I laughed for like 5 miniutes when you were like " give this to your friend. Fuck you this is all you get. I'm in control" Like rotflmfao.
2.) You expression at the end to the 360. Classic.

I love the AVGN. I was born in 96 and i have a super nintendo (that my dad owned) and i still love to play it. I have a PS3 which i also love, but the classics will always have a place in my heart. I also have many other nintendo systems, even the wii. Modern games are great. But the classics will always be... well, the classics.

The Nerd's reaction to GTA 4 was hysterical. I couldn't stop laughing for about 5 minutes! Great video, hopefully the rest of this year goes out smoothly and productively.

PONG rocks. Love this game.
It's funny even 12 year old 3d spoiled kids love playing this game and it really is fun.

Now I have to nerd a little sharing wisdumb...:
Wanna know how that wire works electricity comes down, video signal goes up? Simple enough: The video signal is a low voltage (<1V) AC signal modulated about 70-80 MHz (+-) and the electricity is an unmodulated DC signal. This means, the box filters out the DC signal and sends the pure video signal to the TV and the console gets the electricity and modulates the video signal onto the DC current. It would even work with AC, because of the different frequencies. Ever wondered why your TV can receive more than one programme through the same wire? But explaining how THIS works is serious shit.
By the way, notice the box at the end of the NES/SNES RC cable? It works the same way: The console sends the video signal up there plus the electricity for the box to work (thats why you get poor picture quality when you try to use a cable without the box).

Another thing:
The Fairchild Channel F actually has a CPU. And it runs at 2 MHz. That was monstrous these days (1977). Also it has Video RAM. Another fun fact about this console: You can change cartridges without turning it off
(this works about 9 out of 10 times)

Yeah I talk much when the day's long but before you complain...you dont have to read it.

Your face at the end was simply amazing.....

oh, *facepalm* i misunderstood. sorry :P

Hey L337 - not trying to start a debate here, but just to clarify - I was actually saying that I'm thankful to have grown up with the Atari 2600 and original NES. Maybe the "realistic" action games didn't exist back then, but I absolutely loved the old classics like Pac Man, Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Space Invaders. And though I sometimes play games like Guitar Hero now, I still have a fond place in my memory for those classic originals.
