Yeah, I never understood why you had to touch the orb to move on when you beat a boss. After the last hit to the boss, you should just be able to go to the next stage. If it was a power-up you could use I would touch the orb then. Bottom line, fuck the orbs and just advance me to the next stage with full health GOD DAMN IT!
October 8, 2013 at 1:52 pm
Well..it DID refill your life bar…so…
October 19, 2013 at 10:54 pm
May i direct you to the orb in SMB3?
April 9, 2010 at 7:19 am
i love the whole Castlevania NES series!!!!!
everything about Castlevania….
even those annoying orbs LOL! XD
April 14, 2010 at 7:43 pm
orbs are awesome
April 18, 2010 at 6:45 pm
I laughed so hard when the Castlevania II game showed up and you just kept yelling, “Stop!”
April 23, 2010 at 2:49 pm
You Kill Dracula…
Your Reward Is!!!
A Glowy Red Bouncy Ball, YaY
April 26, 2010 at 6:04 pm
Brilliant ending, James. I can’t watch anything starring you without laughing.
May 4, 2010 at 8:05 pm
nit picking, anal retention at its finest, thank you AVGN!
June 10, 2010 at 9:24 am
the orb thing is also in super mario bros. 3. why do we need that?
June 16, 2010 at 12:58 am
U know, i recently found and bought the original CASTLEVANIA for the NES for 35 bucks. it was really kool to actually play this game for the first time. the only reason in knew wat the game looked like was from earlier clips and this review. i say it lived up to the hype, and it was fucking hard. i actually had waaay more trouble with the GRIM REAPER than i did with DRACULA. and i love the ending of the review. classic music right there! pretty bad made-up names though. lol
June 16, 2010 at 1:54 pm
i have the first castlevania it awesome but… im stuck on the frankenstein boss because of the mini dude who shoots fireballs.
July 23, 2010 at 9:04 pm
I got this game a few months ago, and only just started to play it. and HOLY FUCK
It’s friggin’ awesome.
But it’s so hard, and I simply can’t beat Dracula (for some reason, He’s even harder for me than Death, I have no clue why)
Great review, too. I think that these videos are your best, when you talk about a game you actually like.
August 10, 2010 at 12:30 pm
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL When your like NO! STOP! STOP! STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 22, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Ah… Castlevania. So awesome. My favorite series on the NES. In fact, I wrote a review of it. It isn’t half way as awesome as James’ reviews (He Just gets better and better), but those who want to see it can go here:http://realreview.weebly.com/
Anyway, keep up the good work, James.
August 27, 2010 at 7:54 am
Christ I remember just downloading this game on my wii just for curiousity sake and HOLY HOT DAMN its amazing but every five seconds after the 3rd stage this was what you’d hear coming out of my my bedroom”…fuck…Fuck!…Fuck!…FUUUUCCCCKKK!!!” lol amazing game but an even better review …”IF THERES A FUCKING PORKCHOP IN THIS WALL I WILL SO EAT IT!!!”LMAO
August 30, 2010 at 2:59 pm
Orbs give you health. Nuff said.
September 23, 2010 at 4:40 pm
You said when Simon got hit he jumped back, causing him to fall, thus making it game more difficult, just to put in, the same damn thing happens in Legendary Axe for turbo grafx16, that game was fun, but hard!
September 26, 2010 at 1:28 pm
If you can keep hitting Igor he freezes and can’t throw his fireballs. That’s one way to go about it.
October 4, 2010 at 1:23 pm
Great ending, apparently the evil spirit of Simons Quest didn’t want to be left out of a full blown Castlevania marathon,
October 8, 2010 at 10:26 am
Holy Shit this game was so fuckin hard when I ws a kid!! I could never beat that awsome game and I was pist about it! Mabey I should try it now……Long Live the Nerd!!
October 8, 2010 at 10:28 am
Funny review James! As always! Long Live the Nerd!
October 12, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Something weird.. Christian ska band doing an intro with the melody of castlevania.
October 27, 2010 at 3:58 pm
I’ve played up to the beginning of the 4th level of the 1st Castlevania, and I do agree that it’s a fun game to play.
Yeah, you DO mention Castlevania alot on your show, but I love it.
If Hollywood desides to make a film based off of Castlevania and not frack it up, I’d be game to see it.
The word “f#ckness” can be found in the Urban DIctionary.
I always laugh out loud with the Simon’s Quest day-to-night transition.
November 2, 2010 at 12:12 am
20 years and I finally beat the cookie monster too man. *Raises Scotch* To you good sir.
November 19, 2010 at 6:50 am

December 5, 2010 at 7:43 pm
Castlevania was one of my altime favorite games Back on my NES. It’s still a good game to this day, and I do agree, It’s quite hard!
Not as hard as Simon’s Quest, Though….
December 31, 2010 at 4:17 am

February 12, 2011 at 3:57 pm
It’s nothing big, but it’s a bit funny how The Nerd says “Castlevaney”, which as I am lead to believe is right off the stereotypical dialect (or accent) from texans. =D
March 2, 2011 at 6:17 am
After watching this I actually went and got an emulator to play it. Such a fantastic game.
March 26, 2011 at 1:52 pm
I love this game and this episode.
I´ve seen this so many times…
April 9, 2011 at 10:25 pm
A friend and I where discussing the Pork Chop thing…. and we came up with our own reason. Dracula knew that the Belmont family would keep trying(and ultimately failing) to kill him, and planned ahead. His sense of humour is so sick that he actually helps to give them a chance by baking pork chops and stashing them in hidden hollow compartments in the walls, which somehow in this era have heating lamps above them, to keep them warm. Right before the game begins, he sends each Belmont a note saying “Dear [INSERT SLAYER HERE],
I have stashed pork chops in the wall to ensure that you do not die of starvation.
Hahaha, you’re friend Dracula”
This is OUR theory, where’s yours?>:3
May 20, 2011 at 12:30 am
I guess those editers are from japan, at the terms they have to make credits, they give themself a nickname and random last name
June 4, 2011 at 8:40 pm
i did the same thing he did at 7:40 when I beat both super castlevania 4 and rondo of blood
June 14, 2011 at 8:49 pm

August 19, 2011 at 8:56 pm
Boris Karloffice and Belo Lugusi are my two favorite actors of all time.
August 22, 2011 at 11:17 am

September 13, 2011 at 3:50 pm
4:18-4:23 Avgn says in Castelvania games hearts is anything else but health? Is he even played any Gameboy Castelvania games?! There is maybe 2-3, but at least one game, Castelvania Adventure, where hearts actually replenish health.
Avgn, if you got that and all other Castelvania gameboy games, make small episode about those games!
December 5, 2011 at 5:32 pm
Hey Nerd! I want to know, do you have Castlevania Adventure?! If you not have, get one and play it!
September 17, 2011 at 11:41 am
The best way to beat the hall before the grim reaper without getting hit is to save your axes. DO NOT GET THE CROSSES! kEEP THE AXES! As soon as you get up the stairs get past the medusa head on the right and go up against the wall, turn around, and shoot our axes like a motherfucker. It will kill everything in its path. Keep going carefully jumping or ducking over the heads. Then as soon as you see
September 17, 2011 at 11:48 am
The best way to beat the hallway before the grim reaper without getting hit is to save your axes. Do not get the crosses before you get there. As soon as you get up the stairs get to the right so you direct the medusa heads coming from the left. Then shoot your axes like a motherfucker! Keep going, and as soon as you see the next knight shoot your axes again like a mother fucker. Everything gets smoked. Good luck fans!
September 21, 2011 at 11:42 pm
I recently LPed Castlevania and when I got to the Reaper Hall I noticed that the Medusa Heads only come from the direction you’re looking when their “spawn timer” ticks. As long as I kept me eyes forward they only came from left to right. Well, in my experience anyhow, maybe my version glitched or something, but I only got right to left heads when I was looking at the right side when they appeared. Love the AVGN series BTW. Rock on.
October 9, 2011 at 12:11 pm
Out of all the reviews you’ve done this four part castlevania-thon is by far my favorite of them all, with the possible exception of the end of dick tracy where you drilled that piece of shit and then freaked out about it facially and then hit it with a fucking hammer! YEAH! I hated that game as a kid and even though I was a lot less creative (I just threw it in the fucking garbage) it was still wonderful both to see it get the punishment it deserved and because no ONE moment has ever made me laugh quite as hard.
Especially the very end of this review where the simon’s quest cartridge just, won’t, STOP! So funny. Anyways keep up all of your good work, (not just avgn or the avgn movie I love pretty much everything you do so don’t let those people who say you should abandon everything else but avgn get you down) and remember, you rule.
November 12, 2011 at 7:58 pm
I dont know why everyone says you have to get like 50+ hearts to have a chance against dracula. When I beat the game i just ran through once and got whatever hearts were given to me by the candels and killed him with around 20ish hearts.
November 27, 2011 at 4:52 pm
The architect of the castle was chaos himself
December 4, 2011 at 5:36 pm

December 13, 2011 at 10:17 pm

December 21, 2011 at 10:00 pm
An awesome special, these Castlevania videos made me a fan. I hardly ever had the chance to play the games as a kid. But I’m glad I get to play them now. Thank you James, for making me a Castlevania Fan.

The Orb, (3:30) refills your health bar
January 3, 2012 at 1:58 pm
You really was first man on my memory to call ghoul-form of Dracula a cookie-monster)))
January 3, 2012 at 10:36 pm
The funny thing is that “James Banana” is actually the only real “name” (well artits’s name) in the credits. It’s actually a woman.
January 14, 2012 at 5:28 am
In Japan slightly altering the name escapes copyright infringement (just look at the Fire Pro Wrestling names for its roster).
So by ever so slightly altering the names, they got away with it even though we know who it’s supposed to be.
January 16, 2012 at 12:40 am
Never played the original Castlevania games as a kid. But i gave them a shot and they are some of the best games I have ever played.
January 16, 2012 at 2:32 pm
@AJB I have played only 1 Castlevania game in my childhood (I was 5-6 years old, i think) and it was Castlevania Adventure, for gameboy. I never beated that game back then and thats maybe ONLY Castlevania game, where hearts actually heals! And i have asked many times for James, does he got that game, but he is never answered to me… I have heard there is at least 2 or 3 Castlevania games for gameboy, but i not sure about those others, but Castlevania Adventure is real thing.
James Rolfe, if you ever read this, make small review about Castlevania gameboy games!
January 28, 2012 at 7:26 pm
January 28, 2012 at 7:28 pm
@TH93Fin @AJB If you look in the game collection section you’ll see that he does own Castlevania adventure. I’m sure he gets a lot of mail and probably can’t answer it all.
January 23, 2012 at 4:10 pm
I have watched all of the Castlevania parts like 5 times and it can’t get boring. These videos are still so awesome! Thank you James!
January 25, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Death only Serves Dracula in the Castlevania Series (Most notable I feel in Symphony of The Night because Dracula (Named Mathias Cronqvist at the time) holds the Crimson Stone and the Ebony stone or some shit
February 29, 2012 at 1:41 am
this is my favorite one, Castlevania is to awesome, ….but… what the hell James, you can play good games to !, like Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Kirby, Punch-Out, MEGAMAN !!!! & X series, Mortal Kombat, Base wars, Adventure Island, Mario Kart, F-Zero, EVO: Search For Eden, Knights of the Round, The King of Dragons !!!!!, Demon’s Crest…..well, you like to kick our ass viewer about lower games, but I kick your nuts off Master games owner ! PLZ, do video about other great games like Castlevania, Battletoad, Contra ect…té pas game caliss !!!! haha, from a fans of Québec Tabarnak !
March 24, 2012 at 10:33 pm
James, these are by far my favorite videos that you’ve put together. I always appreciate your humor, frustration and satire, but I always feel that when you go into “history mode” or let your adoration for the 8 and 16-bit worlds shine you elevate to provide something that’s also incredibly sentimental and poignant (in addition to the usual humor of course). I wish you best of luck on your AVGN movie endeavor and if you ever have the itch to give the Castlevania/Star Wars/Zelda/Batman treatment to other cherished childhood favorites such as Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Mario or Contra I’ll definitely be watching (not that there’s any doubt I wouldn’t be watching anyway)!
April 6, 2012 at 8:15 pm
The best: Castlevania, Dracula’s Curse, Rondo of Blood, Bloodlines, Symphony of the Night, Lament of Innocence, Aria of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Adventure Rebirth, and Order of Ecclesia
Not as good: Simon’s Quest, Super Castlevania IV, Harmony of Dissonance, Curse of Darkness, Dawn of Sorrow
Total shit: Haunted Castle, both N64 games, and Judgment. Seriously fuck Judgment. Fuck it with a gun.
April 7, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Another game that knocks you backwards when you get hit or shot is Goldeneye 007 on N64
April 12, 2012 at 10:06 am
Thank you ever so much Mr. Rolfe. Castlevania has long been the shit!! CAN’T WAIT FO’ DA MOVIE!!
April 29, 2012 at 7:43 am
“Unh! YOUR MOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!”
Best line in the entire video
April 29, 2012 at 11:13 pm
”Unh! YOUR MOTHER” is hilarious but ” If there’s a pork chop in that wall I would So eat it ” is the best castlevania inside joke I’ve ever heard llol
May 17, 2012 at 7:04 pm
Love Castlevania….this was the first one I played on the Famicom back in Japan around when it came out. Great game but hard for sure!
June 25, 2012 at 12:04 am
Haha! Steven Gielberg..
July 14, 2012 at 12:12 am
this is one of my favorite avgn vids
August 28, 2012 at 12:26 pm
It almost brings me an tear to my eye, when I see this. One of the first NES games I ever played. And its one of my favorite series. Symphony of the night is probably the best but its a hard choice between SOTN and SuperCastlevania 4. James you should really check out Aria Of Sorrow which is a great game.
August 30, 2012 at 12:15 am
Test to the shit! lol so true.if you really want to rage play Super Ghost and Ghouls.I forgot how difficult that game is.
January 3, 2013 at 1:02 am
lol you should review the newest castlevania game for the xbox 360
January 10, 2013 at 4:25 am
I have to thank you for this Castlevania special James. I knew the game as a kid but I hardly ever played it back then. Thx to your Castlevania videos I rediscovered them and became a big fan. Castlevania is now among my all time favourite games.
April 21, 2013 at 10:13 pm
My favorite AVGN episodes are, ironically the ones with a more serious tone.
June 2, 2013 at 4:00 am
when he said steven gielberg i actually laughed pretty hard
October 21, 2013 at 6:03 pm
Cool part 1
November 3, 2013 at 9:06 am
Grate review James I love your Castlevania videos
December 31, 2013 at 4:15 am
I think a lot of these older games could be tweaked to eliminate knockback; CastleVania, Megaman… You should be able to barrel through when necessary.
How about Auto-Megabuster charging in MegaMan?
