– the Terminator
I’m sure you’re probably aware of this, and I’m sure you’ve received at least 20 emails about it, but LJN actually DID make a halfway-decent game once! Spiderman: Maximum Carnage for the SNES was your typical beat-’em up sidescroller, with pretty awesome graphics, and the ability to play as either Spiderman or Venom. For one issue of Nintendo Power, it basically was “THE game” that month. I remember renting it once and thinking it was pretty decent, though not good enough to buy. Imagine my astonishment when I learned this game was created by that dreaded shit-rainbow company, LJN!
I have played both of the xmen games on genisis and they are alot of fun. James the flask should have the LJN logo painted on it . Anythime your playing something from these assholes you have to break it out.
And about the spiderman game LJN made. One good game does not redeem all the crap. Sorry
I had both Genesis games, and I was pissed when I found out in order to beat the second to last stage in the first one you had to reset the Genesis. I figured it out by chance. I had thought that maybe the designers screwed up with that stage or something. Until one playthrough, I got to the end of the stage when it said to “reset the computer”. I had a thing back then where sometimes I would reset my console instead of just turning it off. I did so that time and it went to the part leading up to the final stage. I thought I found a glitch until some game text came up. I was pissed when I realized that not only was it simple but something no gamer would think of to do. Who would think to actually reset their console? Seriously, that is just stupid.
I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned, but there is an SNES X-Men game that should have been mentioned in this rant. It also features spider man, but that’s besides the point. I’m not sure if anyone’s heard of this, but here’s the title: Spider Man/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge. It’s a 2D side-scrolling game that’s just horse shit. You start a Spider Man and you have to collect….well…..some weird objects before you can advance, and when you do, you can select your character. The game, sadly, was done by Acclaim.
OK, so who else is psyched about the X-Men arcade game coming to XBLA and PSN?
Magneto says: “Welcome to DIE!!”
White Queen says: “White Queen welcomes you to die!”
Kenshiro says: “You’re already dead.”
Speaking of which, Fist of the North Star for the NES. Nerd-worthy or not? I’d personally love to see the Nerd bust out the Hokuto Hyakuretsu Ken on that Game Pak!
As you know In anything We have titles Just like in real life , you know … Like Workers ,military, Bum, Students… Well For The AVGN I have a other One: Fucking God reviewer of the Shit!
I wonder what deal Marvel made to allow LJN to make most of the Marvel NES, SNES, and Game Boy games.
If anyones interested in playing a good game featuring the X-Men, play the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games. They rock.
I also heard that the game based on X-Men Origins: Wolverine is also pretty good, even for a movie based game.
The first NES game got Storm’s backstory wrong. She wasn’t born in New York City. She was born in Africa. …I am such a nerd. =P
Why did LJN think that Wolverine’s claws can hurt himself. If that was true, he wouldn’t be part of the living.
If anyone’s interested in seeing another X-Men video game review, checkout Linkara and Spoony’s joint video on Wolverine: Adamantium Rage on the Genesis, where the Nerd makes a quick cameo.
Actually, LJN came from Lewis J. Norman, the reversal of Norman J. Lewis who ran a toy company. By the way ever heard of Acclaim? Thats who they worked for up to a small reappearance in 2000, since then they haven’t been heard from again….Thank God.
Slight error in my post. acclaim held on to LJN from 1990 when they bought the company from MCA up to 2000. Another fun fact is MCA’s profits plunged down over 75% when they had LJN, now that sucks ass.
Why didn’t you do the SNES X-Men games (Spiderman/X-Men: Arcade’s Revenge and X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse) on this review? I’ve always wondered about that.
Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered why LJN’s games were so shitty, it’s because it was Acclaim’s secondary label. In other words, these are the games that weren’t good enough to be Acclaim games. Think about that.
At the end of the LJN rainbow there’s nothing but a big pile of leprechaun crap. LJN stands for Les Jeux Nefastes, which is French for “games that hurt you.”
The Genesis X-men has a glitch where you can completely skip the fight with Sabertooth. If you stand on the upper left platform where you fight him (he’s still off the screen) and summon Ice Man to make a bridge between the upper platforms, it cancels out the fight entirely and you just walk by as if nothing happened. I don’t know if this is a well known glitch because I found it myself as a kid and abused the hell out of it for years.
Also, my dumb ass always flipped the power switch on and off instead of hitting reset so it took me YEARS to beat that section of the Mojo stage.
I just bought a few NES games just not caring whether they were good or not, didn’t want horrible ones, just average, I guess about 4 months ago. It was so fucking cheap because the label was like burned or some shit so I couldn’t see the LJN stamp! But, as angry as I was, I don’t blame the kid who burned the label, because when I put that game in my Nintendo… I had nightmares for weeks to come.
There’s only 2 LJN games I’ve played that aren’t steaming piles of shit: Spiderman and Venom in Maximum Carnage (game is alright, but its pretty hard, I’ve never beat it) and T2: The Arcade Game (the game itself is meh, but its playable). Everything else is just a heaping pile of pig shit. I’m surprised he didn’t review Wolverine: Adamantium Rage on SNES (another LJN game). That game is a piece of crap, with an insane difficulty I’ve never seen anyone beat it except maybe once on youtube.
im only 14, so i didnt ‘grow up’ with these systems…but my 1st system was the snes which, even though there was a horrendous amount of frustration i encountered within most of the 30+ games i had, i loved to and would still like to play =). my second station was ps1 which i only recently found out that they had made controllers with analog sticks for it like a year after ps1 was made or something (i had the controllers with no analog sticks…) then was ps2 wich was and still is my main system, i LOVE the ps2 i probably have over 50 games on it and most of wich i like =) now i have a ps3 and xbox360 wich are far beyond what the older systems were…but i still have cravings for playing older systems…i no longer have the snes, but i boaght a sega genesis a few months ago, i only have 8 games for it and havent played it that much…but i think one day ill come back to it and will not wanna let it go…
seriously, that wolverine game is a pile of shit. Isn’t the main power of Wolvering healing? so why the fuck would he not be able to use his claws? Seriously>? WTF? he shouldn’t even have a health bar, he’s practically invincible according to xmen 3, which i won’t endorse. but COMON, hamburgers? Are you kidding me?
@hyperhippy92 I agree with you pal seriously you yee ha you son of a pile of monkey nuts finally LJN is Over baby we got good game company’s now Id software,Radical entertainment,Valve,THQ,Rocksteady,Rockstar and more baby yeah
@boyce1381 I dont remember a spaz out mode, but I do remember a powerup that gives you berserker rage where your claws dont hurt you for that duration.
I had the wolverine game when I was younger and I remember it being as hard as my shit after and all you can eat steak buffet. But I kept on because my parents hated games and they would only buy me one game per year.
Needless to say I mastered the technique of using the self injuring claws. Although I played it alot, I was never able to beat it. Sabretooth is the last boss and I am convinced he is invincible and placed as a gag to fuck with children.
@Tekkenfan Street fighter versus xmen was a fighting game in the vein of Marvel vs Capcom, and in fact was probably the first version of the fighting crossover.
I should’ve discovered AVGN earlier…
To straighten up some childhood memories, i reviewed and finished NES’ Wolverine. It’s so disappointing.
I also have nightmare on Elm Street and i was thinking on doin’ it again since i just played it once and up to this day i remember it. Same for NES’ Terminator 2 (which i recall getting up to the motorcycle part)…
I know now i have to stay away. Hard lesson LJNed.
The thing with the claws in the wolverine game. Its similar wolverine on the Xbox. When your claws are out you cant use your healing factor, & I think its the same in the comics, but Idk.
@DraculaAlucard1 Uh, no, in the comics Wolvie has no limitations like not being able to use his healing factor while his claws are out. That is retarded… it was a dumb video game idea.
& they did release the Konami arcade game on home consoles, but i think it was after this video. Its avalible on Xbox live arcade for 900 points I think.
@swede First off, you can go to youtube and view any of his older videos (more than one year) for free. Second, this is more of less his job. Do you think James shouldn’t receive any compensation for the time, effort and money he sinks into all these videos, in addition to the upkeep and payments on his site? Lastly, you wouldn’t call shows like Psych, Louie and Parks and Recreation sell outs for having commercials or sites like Hulu or South Park Studios sell-outs for having ad-supported videos so why would you hold AVGN to a different standard?
Great X-Men games were pretty much non-existent in the 8/16/32 bit eras and even the highlights, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse and Clone Wars, we’re somewhat generic side scrolling action games. Luckily the Xbox/PS2 brought us X-Men Legends and the Xbox 360/PS3 brought us Marvel Ultimate Alliance, two of the best superhero/licensed games ever. Plus, their inclusion of 4-player coop just adds to the fun/insanity. Highly recommended!
@mcnerven SNES’ Mutant Apocalypse was anything but a generic sidescroller, probably because Capcom developed it (way before turning into Crapcom).
And as far as i recall, it was the best X-men Game of the 16-bit era.
@Sirkrozz Well, hence the somewhat generic. It was definitely a fun game, but was also very similar to other Capcom titles at the time, such as Knights of the Round and Final Fight.

March 29, 2012 at 6:22 pm
@mcnerven As far as i recall (haven’t replayed it in a couple of years), unlike KOTR and FF they already included special moves for every character, taking advantage of the X-Men franchise as no other ever could have.
I get your point anyways, though i think is not as straightforward as the other X-Men titles in comparison.
What about X-men Mutant Apocalypse? That was an awesome game. So was it’s sequel Marvel Super Heroes: War Of The Gems. I wonder what his reaction would of been if he played Spider-man X-men in Arcade’s Revenge. that game was terrible.
LJN may suck , but some of their games have 1st class music, like spider man and the X-men which got some Fusion/Jazz/Progressive Rock songs , especially on cyclops level, that are great.
Every time I watch this video I wonder why he left out the obvious choice, which is Mutant Apocalypse for the SNES. Maybe because there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the game? Nah, I’m sure he’d come up with something, such as there’s no ending animation when you use passwords to finish it or that the special moves use Street Fighter-like commands instead of a simple button press.
April 8, 2010 at 2:58 am
Please, someone help me, i would love to know what music is that when james starts to complain about the second game “wolverine” being LJN.
If someone could tell me, i would be very gratefull.

I also have nightmare on Elm Street and i was thinking on doin’ it again since i just played it once and up to this day i remember it. Same for NES’ Terminator 2 (which i recall getting up to the motorcycle part)…
I know now i have to stay away. Hard lesson LJNed.

Anyone know what game that song is from that starts at roughly 6:30?
March 7, 2012 at 11:44 pm
6:30 song is the Intro Theme of NES’ Wolverine.
The other 2 variations used as soundtrack during the rest of the game are also good too.

The thing with the claws in the wolverine game. Its similar wolverine on the Xbox. When your claws are out you cant use your healing factor, & I think its the same in the comics, but Idk.
March 28, 2012 at 3:39 pm
@DraculaAlucard1 Uh, no, in the comics Wolvie has no limitations like not being able to use his healing factor while his claws are out. That is retarded… it was a dumb video game idea.
March 12, 2012 at 8:31 pm
& they did release the Konami arcade game on home consoles, but i think it was after this video. Its avalible on Xbox live arcade for 900 points I think.

Shoulda reviewed Adamantium rage. XD You sure kicked Linkara’s ass

I DONT NEED TO SEE FUCKING 2 AND A HALF MINUTE TRAILER OF FUCKING CONTAGION BEFORE THE VIDEO. FUCKING SELLOUT
March 25, 2012 at 2:05 pm
@swede First off, you can go to youtube and view any of his older videos (more than one year) for free. Second, this is more of less his job. Do you think James shouldn’t receive any compensation for the time, effort and money he sinks into all these videos, in addition to the upkeep and payments on his site? Lastly, you wouldn’t call shows like Psych, Louie and Parks and Recreation sell outs for having commercials or sites like Hulu or South Park Studios sell-outs for having ad-supported videos so why would you hold AVGN to a different standard?
March 26, 2012 at 5:07 pm
@mcnerven Well put! Damn Swedes…

Blah! I love the Genesis but hate all the X-men games.
March 25, 2012 at 2:09 pm
Great X-Men games were pretty much non-existent in the 8/16/32 bit eras and even the highlights, X-Men Mutant Apocalypse and Clone Wars, we’re somewhat generic side scrolling action games. Luckily the Xbox/PS2 brought us X-Men Legends and the Xbox 360/PS3 brought us Marvel Ultimate Alliance, two of the best superhero/licensed games ever. Plus, their inclusion of 4-player coop just adds to the fun/insanity. Highly recommended!
March 28, 2012 at 7:16 pm
@mcnerven SNES’ Mutant Apocalypse was anything but a generic sidescroller, probably because Capcom developed it (way before turning into Crapcom).
And as far as i recall, it was the best X-men Game of the 16-bit era.
March 29, 2012 at 6:15 pm
@Sirkrozz Well, hence the somewhat generic. It was definitely a fun game, but was also very similar to other Capcom titles at the time, such as Knights of the Round and Final Fight.
March 29, 2012 at 6:22 pm
@mcnerven As far as i recall (haven’t replayed it in a couple of years), unlike KOTR and FF they already included special moves for every character, taking advantage of the X-Men franchise as no other ever could have.
I get your point anyways, though i think is not as straightforward as the other X-Men titles in comparison.

Segensis does what Nintendon´t

What about X-men Mutant Apocalypse? That was an awesome game. So was it’s sequel Marvel Super Heroes: War Of The Gems. I wonder what his reaction would of been if he played Spider-man X-men in Arcade’s Revenge. that game was terrible.

with all the bad games that LJN made i wonder if they are still making games? maybe they make them in hell now
August 27, 2012 at 3:26 pm
i’d rather not stick my dick in a piranna’s mouth…
September 7, 2012 at 4:15 pm
This review is awesome.

LJN may suck , but some of their games have 1st class music, like spider man and the X-men which got some Fusion/Jazz/Progressive Rock songs , especially on cyclops level, that are great.
November 23, 2012 at 2:16 am
A bit of irony here. Disney now owns Marvel AND Lucasfilms, so the X-Men Clone Wars reference is strangely even more fitting now.
January 18, 2013 at 6:05 pm
The X-Men arcade game was released on Xbox Live last year and it’s probably a perfect port.
February 11, 2013 at 11:40 pm
Every time I watch this video I wonder why he left out the obvious choice, which is Mutant Apocalypse for the SNES. Maybe because there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the game? Nah, I’m sure he’d come up with something, such as there’s no ending animation when you use passwords to finish it or that the special moves use Street Fighter-like commands instead of a simple button press.
February 20, 2013 at 11:02 pm
Another classic episode…I honestly think that James can have a video shitting on a LJN poster and it would still be cinematic genius
March 11, 2013 at 2:45 pm
NICE TO FIND SOMETHING THAT FEATURES WOLVERINE THATS WORSE THAN X MEN ORIGINS WOLVERINE.
