Another satanic reference: The music on Lvl 8 uses a tritone, as Black Sabbath´s “Black Sabbath”. This harmonic progression is known as “diabolus in musica” (the Devil´s music).
My favorite review of “The Wizard” is the one from the Nostalgia Critic, because he told more about the movie. Don’t get me wrong, I love James perspective on whan he first saw this film when he was a kid.
I played a little over the first level of SMB3, and it’s a very fun game.
I absolutely love the Nintendo accessory battle suit, even when it’s used in his fight with the Critic.
James, if you read this, I have a question: Does it give you pause when you see little 12 and 13 year old kids singing the explicit, curse-filled lyrics to your theme song on the internet? I realize that kids do and say worse things than this on the internet nowadays, but do you ever think about your AVGN character having a little too much influence over younger kids?
Dear MadHitz, people just watch, what they love to watch, people like to do, what they just love to do. Some people grow up to musicians, doctors, athletes, architects, astronauts and some people will grow up to rapists, killers, abusers etc. Thru all our life we see many different things, from when we’re very-very young, till when we’re older, than oldness itself. We see love and hate, violence and salvation, we see lot of good and evil. That is life all about – you’re inside of a dual universe. every human being have it’s own dream, own ideology, based on many factors, but the main factors are level of patience, laziness level and a power of will.
Everyone lives an unique life and every life chooses it’s own ways. Wrong ways are always easiest at first, but causing problems later.
We need to trust in our children. We have no other choice.
Remember when you ducked on the block for 6 seconds. There is actually a glitch that that is used for. if you run to the end of the level, you’ll notice that you go behind the black screen at the end. There is a toad house behind there where you can get a warp whistle.
Hey did you notice the sound Lucas made when he punched in the code on the power glove was the tones from Close Encounters? And also the guy who played the sleazy bounty hunter guy I thought sounded like the voice of Howard from Howard the Duck but when I researched it I found out he was George Lucas’ second choice to play Luke Skywalker per Wikipedia. Just a little nerd trivia for ya!
Great review of both the game and the movie. I can recall being a kid and begging my parent to take me to see the movie, but they wouldn’t because they also thought it was an overblown commercial so i had to wait for the video. Seeing Super Mario 3 was crazy and I didn’t think it was real
I am surprised that you mentioned the “Armageddon” competition, but didn’t shed any light on the Nintendo World Championship that followed. It was one of the biggest things cross the country in the summer of 1990. On you game list you list a Repo Cart so it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to review.
The first series of the Mario cartoon included characters from the first two games…..so that was kinda where 2 went.
And boy…the cartoons were certainly a lot of ’2′.
Looking back on my NES days, I was nothing resembling the game nerd I am now. Know when the first time I heard of Super Mario Bros 3 was? when I tore the wrapping paper off it at christmas. For a game to just suddenly come out of no-where for me now is unthinkable. My mum rocked at buying games, she always bought me the best stuff.
My favorite video keep it up. One mistake I found though was during the review of The Wizard you mentioned that in the tournament Mario Bros. 3 was a game nobody had played yet. Not true. It actually came out in Japan the year before the movie. The same year Mario Bros. 2 came out. Read about it on Wikipedia. That was one thing that pissed me off about Nintendo during the 80s and 90s how they often kept North American gamers waiting longer for new games and systems than the Japanese. The NES included. It came out in Japan in 1983 but not in North America until 2 years later. The Super NES and Super Mario World same thing. They came out in Japan in 1990 and North America 1 year later. But that seems to have stopped since the N64. Only the N64 was also internet compatible but in Japan Only. We had to wait for the GameCube and PS2 before we had that feature. That’s Bullshit.
Actually, did you ever hear of the SNES Catapult? It’s in the Nintendo Power episode. Internet stat-tracking for the Super. Check it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBAND
i just thought if he really destroyed some of the stuff……. either he has another version just like it or he put it back together……. must have been fun to do though
Pentagrams aren’t evil… inverted pentagrams are. Regular pentagrams are Wicaan and represent earth, water, fire, air, and spirit. The inverted pentagram is satanist and represents Lucifer himself.
@Donrex1943 That’s incredibly off, and by the way pentagram is only the upside down. The regular one is called a Pentacle. Don’t pretend like you’re a scholar, it’s annoying.
This is just the best fucking video. Even though i’ve never heard of The wizard (and i am kind of a cinephile). And thanks to you i don’t have to try all those doors in that damn castle, i could never remember which one was the right one.
The tanuki suit can turn to stone because its based off the tanuki of japanese mythology, the raccoon dog, which can transfprm into things like stone statues. They way it flew was by distending its balls and flapping them like wings and using them to glide! The more you know.

I always feel bad for the Super Nintendo I guess they can’t melee like they used to. Is that black NES a custom job or a special release?

I know its only going on march, but I just picked out this years Halloween costume !! The angery super Hero nerd.
March 4, 2012 at 7:50 am
I am very curious about that black NES at 15:00
Is that just a custom NES or part of one of the many NES bundles?
March 9, 2012 at 5:26 am
@GeekySwede Might be a Famicom.
March 14, 2012 at 9:37 am
@RandyRigg Total random. The Famicom looks nothing like the NES, unlike that, and the cartridges are differently shaped.
March 14, 2012 at 2:02 pm
@Freddy Fiorentino I just paused it and yeah that’s def. not a famicom.
March 26, 2012 at 4:41 pm
@GeekySwede It looks like it was spray-painted to me. The shiny part isn’t shiny etc.
April 29, 2012 at 1:25 pm
I wonder how many times James said “Califoooooooooooooornia” when heading out to make the AVGN movie?
May 12, 2012 at 9:45 pm

November 16, 2012 at 8:51 pm
I ran into my first advertisement on here…what were they thnking?!?!
December 21, 2012 at 2:13 am
The people only said 6 once in the tournament scene in The Wizard, not 3 times. They were counting down to when the first round was over.
January 10, 2013 at 4:54 pm
