Nice video,it was the first AVGN episode i ever saw(over a year after it was new)if i had a virtual boy and all the game,i would review it too, you’re right about the head strap.
April 10, 2010 at 11:57 pm
Nice video! This is a 3D console? But Nintendo make an successor of Nintendo DS and DSi is, Nintendo 3DS. It has a backward compatible of DS and DSi games and it has a 3D than Virtual Boy and will be great graphics like PSP (today is a shitty now because of PSP go)

i own this fantastic machine. ( sarcasm ). ahh well, its a time killer.

I hope for James’ 100th episode that he could review the history of the handheld market! From the original GameBoy all the way up to the Nintendo DS!!!
I have to admit that Nintendo has dominated the handheld market for over 20 years!!! Yeah, they did have a failure on their hands (Virtual Boy) but you have to give Nintendo credit, they’re learning from their mistake and the 3DS will be a hell of a lot better than the Virtual Boy!

@bj_smokey (btw, love the name): i googled the 3ds and i cant wait
June 20, 2010 at 8:08 am
oMg! everything is so red. whole video was so red. my eyes are in pain now! if i would play this thing in real, i think, that my head would explode.
and yeah, this is not a virtual reality, this is just a poor try to imitate 3D texturing.
wow, by watching these videos, sometimes i’m coming to conclusion that people, who founding and creating consoles, have nothing even far close to the gaming experience. it just fucking looks like people, who creating consoles are 74 year old train station engineers.
July 3, 2010 at 11:24 pm
this was also my first avgn video. i have an even bigger collection than avgn FOR REAL and im only 10 years old!
July 3, 2010 at 11:42 pm
the only 2 bad games are red alarm and waterworld. the other games look decent, some actually look cool. i think ill add this to my collection.
July 6, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I remember waqnting this piece of shit when I was about 8 or 9. Why?? Because I had a Gamboy and gameboy color and I wanted everything nintendo made. I didn’t know better. I also had the game gear .
July 17, 2010 at 6:13 pm
i remember when i was little i had a virtual boy, me and my bro would play tennis, it was the shit! we played a little wario (somehow a friend had one too and wario) but we loved tennis, stupid step-dad we think sold it cause we can’t find it… what an idiot, coulda made lots of money or kept it….
August 29, 2010 at 11:43 pm
they should remake the decent ones like the wario game and give them to you when you buy the 3ds.
October 2, 2010 at 2:56 am
Jack Bros isn’t -that- expensive. About the price of a regular game. It’s probably not that bad either, as it’s from the Megami Tensei line.
October 5, 2010 at 10:15 pm
I actually wanted that so bad! lol
October 20, 2010 at 11:17 pm
I gotta say That the Virtual Boy was one of t he biggest dissapointments of my youth. At least Nintendo is making up for it with the 3DS…hopefully
October 21, 2010 at 1:16 pm
I never heard of the Virtual Boy when it first came out, and I’ll be forever greatfull of that.
The graphics remind me of “Tron,” but if it was rated R because of the amount of red.
I love the DVD edition of this episode where James finally reviews Jack Bros.
November 18, 2010 at 12:47 am
I hardly remember this as a kid, but I’m sure it would have been a let down! On a happy Virual Boy note, there is a ton of homebrew games created for it, including Mario Kart: Virual Boy! At least it has that going for it!
December 2, 2010 at 10:55 pm
I sent you “Jax Bros”, I wish at some point you’d mention in another AVGN that you have it, and maybe show 4 -10 seconds of footage.
From what I hear, that game is the best the VB had to offer so I think it may be worth playing.
May 27, 2013 at 4:46 am
If you had sent him he would’ve shown it by now don’t make shit up bro
February 6, 2011 at 6:49 pm
Some guy brought one of these pieces of ass in to the pawn shop on the History Channel show “Pawn Stars.” They actually got the Old Man to play it.
March 17, 2011 at 6:01 pm
“it does look like crap” lol!
May 27, 2013 at 4:45 am
He said shit not crap you damn fool
March 29, 2011 at 6:42 pm
This is just another case of Nintendo experimenting with concepts and having it fail, and then when the appropriate technology comes along, you use the new technology and turn it into something great. Like the 3DS. Actually, the 3DS is pretty much the reincarnation of the Virtual Boy.
There is a tragic tale behind the Virtual Boy though, the man responsible behind it was named Gunpei Yokoi. If you don’t know him, you should. Not only was he Miyamoto’s mentor, but he created the gameboy and game and watch. Huge success that live on today. Lots of things that were developed in the past (power glove, virtual boy) that later on when the technology was right became great future consoles (Wii, 3DS). Unfortunately, he died in a car crash a year after he resigned from Nintendo after the Virtual Boy was a flop and he was outcasted. However, the Virtual Boy wasn’t even finished when it was released, it was a prototype and he was forced to release it for the holiday season.
The Virtual Boy in its current state is a piece of crap. However, if you look at the 3DS as a successor to the Virtual Boy. You may see what Gunpei Yokoi envisioned the Virtual Boy to be.
April 23, 2011 at 5:40 am
I feel the need to say, the AVGN, being so intune with the gaming world, already knows about the 3DS.
It’s not like he lives somewhere like Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
May 15, 2011 at 6:25 pm
“I’d rather drink Kevin Costner’s recycled piss!
July 25, 2011 at 10:50 am
i think i got a headache just watching the graphics on this crapload
August 22, 2011 at 9:31 pm
In which case it’s somewhat sadder that the 3DS is also becoming something of a flop for Nintendo thus far.
Interesting also that the 3DS also causes headaches.
November 30, 2011 at 3:41 pm
@commodoregroovy i own one. Never had any headaches. It’s just people complaining about nothing
December 6, 2011 at 2:10 am
No? It’s selling strong. Also I own a 3DS and wear glasses, it strains your eyes after prolonged use but its nothing serious.
Besides, most people turn it off most of the time anyway.
February 19, 2012 at 10:13 pm
@ashxu Just because it sells good doesn’t mean its great. I’d rather get a Vita than a 3DS, but since I’m starting out a gaming collection, I’m aiming for both
December 13, 2011 at 6:05 pm
@commodoregroovy What? The 3DS isn’t flopping… It jusst has a slow start. And besides, if you don’t have a 3DS, then you can’t comment on the fact that it causes headaches at all. If in the slim chance that it does, then there is a 3D slider right on the side and a shit load of parental controls.
Also I have to say…the OCD part of me always cringes in this video because I *know* he didn’t put the cart covers back on the right carts >.0
November 15, 2011 at 6:06 pm
Actually, ocean presenting water world isn’t ironic, as to be ironic is to use a word to mean its opposite.
So, if Ocean presented “desert world”, that would be ironic.
December 2, 2011 at 11:34 pm
I think James reads this comment and decides to edit this video and exclude that part… nevermind, just jump off a balcony.
December 3, 2011 at 1:36 pm
@RistoUusimaa I’d call you a troll, but one look at your profile renders that unnecessary.
December 3, 2011 at 1:37 pm

@RistoUusimaa WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH some troll doesn’t like my comment! OH NOEZ!!!*jumps off balcony

The concept of sarcasm is not familiar to you eh?
December 27, 2011 at 12:44 am
The word he meant to use is “coincidental”.
December 24, 2011 at 8:22 pm
best episode by far! ive watched since 2007
January 10, 2012 at 9:33 am
I wish I had a virtual boy. I really would like to try this video game system. It’s funny watching this video when he says that nobody cares about virtual reality anymore and now we have the Nintendo 3DS. But of course, both systems came from the same company 😉
January 14, 2012 at 11:16 pm
Actually, from what I can tell from watching some gameplay footage of the 3ds, it doesn’t really look all that 3d to me…maybe you have to see it in person. Also, the 3d concept isn’t the same as the virtual reality concept. VR was supposed to be immersive environments, able to turn your head and still be inside the environment, whereas 3d is just 3d graphics that seem to pop out of a 2d surface.
January 15, 2012 at 7:37 pm
i own a virtual boy but only 2 game
January 19, 2012 at 12:55 am
I see where Microsoft got the idea of a battery pack from for the X360. It’s crap imo compare to the dualshock3, it has no standard usb-port to charge it and my fingers gets stiff after a few hours (because my fingers laying against the battery pack)… well it’s not as crappy as the VB, but It’s hard to think that the x360 battery pack is a successor from something in the past.
February 4, 2012 at 10:23 pm
Nerd Gives the finger…. Virtual boy explodes….Classic
February 13, 2012 at 3:44 am

“It does look like shit.”
February 27, 2012 at 11:50 am
I didn’t know much about the VR before watching this vid (except for the name). I’m quite surprised because I thought every VR game would look like Starwing on the SNES. The Wario game looks good and reminds me the Wario Land games on the Gameboy.
I will give it a try on an emulator.
March 4, 2012 at 11:13 am
Aaaah Killer Instinct theme…what a wonderful game 🙂
March 5, 2012 at 2:02 pm
I swore you could get a strap for this to keep it on your face…
March 13, 2012 at 9:18 pm
I own a virtual boy! My eyesight will never recover…… It’s actually kinda cool, but it blurs up your eyes, and it gives you headaches sometimes. I suck at Mario Tennis, and it’s kind of generic but ok; Wario Land is great, Teleroboxer too; galactic pinball sucks, and Mario Clash is neat but repitive.
June 10, 2012 at 3:47 am
This is one of my favorites… Seeing you struggle to keep the system attached to your head was just too funny.
June 15, 2012 at 12:35 am
Im happy I got my VB for 30 bucks as a kid, with games 10 each and buy 2 get one free. Best use of allowance ever.
September 21, 2012 at 7:29 am
I guess these Google Glasses are supposed to be the VR console. I foresee many idiots wearing them getting hit by cars.
September 25, 2012 at 8:22 pm
i’m one of your biggest fan i hope you do more bad game but for ps one
December 3, 2012 at 11:59 am
I recently became aware of the existence of this wonderful piece of hardware. Though it’s not yet released for the cosumer public, it might seem a bit obscure at first but it’s already drawing the attention of all major o/s platforms and game developers. Thought I might share it with you.
Maybe real virtual reality is not so far these days.
December 11, 2012 at 6:51 pm
I so wanted this when I heard of this but beining poor isn’t that bad when you find out that it suck big time so from not having this I don’t feel so bad now.
January 30, 2013 at 6:00 pm
Why isn’t this the version of the video that has the Jack Bros review?
March 14, 2013 at 11:24 pm
I FUCKING LOVED WARIO LAND.. super pissed we never got a Wii port…with all the remakes and shit it would have been nice to get something a little more obscure
March 19, 2013 at 5:11 pm
I discovered something you can use the virtual boy for 😛
March 28, 2013 at 5:28 pm
Oculus Rift Brought me here.
June 14, 2013 at 2:55 pm
As of now, I’m still glad I never played Virtual Boy, and it’s not worth it neither. A better 3D console by Nintendo would be the N64 or Gamecube.
October 20, 2013 at 2:46 pm
the r fuckink zone is most shit
November 8, 2013 at 2:04 am
I was playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and one of the special Nintendo furniture prizes was a fucking Virtual Boy. I laughed for 2 minutes straight, then had to come and watch this for the memories.
November 27, 2013 at 11:57 pm
Thank God for the Oculus Rift.
December 30, 2013 at 8:01 pm
Check out the Oculus Rift. They’re finally getting it right and it looks amazing.
March 16, 2014 at 1:54 pm
I just realized that the dennis hopper “it does look like shit” scene is omitted from the virtual boy episode on the vol 3 avgn dvd, i understand why jack bros was added for the dvd but im just wondering why dennis is missing?
May 24, 2014 at 3:40 am
March 19, 2014 at 8:31 pm
Hard to believe, isn’t it? This system being nintendo’s lone commercial failure in NA. Of course there was the N64 DD but that was only in Japan, but at least they were able to make up for the VB’s failure with the 3DS nearly 18 years later. Kind of ironic eh?

This is The First Assembly of The Holy Kirk, and the mission of my new nerdy religion is to seek comfort, wisdom, and maybe something about ourselves and our future by spreading the enlightening words of the 79 stories charting the adventures of the star ship Enterprise. All who wish to join my online discussions say “Live Long And Prosper” as a comment. This may be what Trekkies might need to be complete, and be enlightened on the deeper meanings that each episode contains.
