yeah there are some places that make you get a token. you put that in the slot and when it gets full they empty out the tokens and use them again. so you have to ask to use their toilets. You don’t pay but you have to ask to take a shit. Although some places still offer free use of restrooms.

I have never seen paid toilets before here in the US but two of my closest friends live in Germany and there they said paid toilets exist there. It’s funny because apparently there are people that will take a shit in the middle of the street because they don’t have the money to use one. I think I would do the same thing.

In norway we have the big cubelike restrooms. they stand in the middle of the marked square, the urinal on the left side is free. But the main event will cost you and the door is also set to register when you enter and will automaticaly open and stay open after 15 minutes until you leave giving anyone that pass by a good look at what is going on in there.

Well to be fair, how many times have you gone to the restroom, only to find it in disgusting conditions? That’s one of the things that’s great about the REAL pay toilets: They are USUALLY in good condition, and the whole thing gets cleaned after someone uses it. So you’re not just paying for the facility, but for cleanlyness.
Now if you’re talking about one of those fast food or coffee shop place that tries to make you pay, or use some token…then that’s major bullshit.

When I went to Europe as a backpacker these goddamn things were the bane of my existence. I was a very tight budget as it was, and now they expected me to pay for the inevitable? These were especially common in train stations, big surprise… I never used a single one – I went behind buildings with all the other smart people/cheapskates. Surprisingly, I noticed a lot of people – and not just foreigners either – doing this. Let’s face it, sometimes you just gotta go, and no lack of currency is gonna convince your bladder to hang in there.

We typically don’t have those in the states but there’s a good chance that for every penny you find on the street someone has pissed nearby so maybe we do…..

When I was in Europe about 10 years ago these things were everywhere, and I do mean everywhere. They were more common than non-pay toilets. Now I understand the idea behind them is to try to pay for the upkeep on the facilities in theory but come on! We pay taxes for roads, so why not for toilets? And businesses make enough money to provide toilets.
I hated the pay-toilets over there. It is one of the few things that America does better than Europe still (i.e. we DON’T have these things, for the most part).

Public toilets most of the time cost ya.
In shopping malls they don’t always force you to pay, but at least there’s always a toilet attendent of death who gives you the evil eye which curses not only you, but also your family three generations from now if you don’t leave a few coins.
The ones that are actually for free… you’d pay for not having to use them.
Best thing you can do: enter a hotel lobby, act like you belong there (or to a paying customer) and use the bathrooms there. No charges and cleaner facilities. (but remember: urgent needs have a bad influence on acting skills *g*)

But at festivals we have the blue or green construction style porta-potties. And you have to pay when you use these. Not with money, the cost is that of the horrible smell and total lack of hygiene. Never been happier to be a guy.

Here in the Netherlands its almost standard for a public toilet to be a pay toilet, the money made from it gets used to clean the toilet (people forget that those toilets needs to be cleaned as well). In the past you put down that 50 euro cent and it went to the cleaning lady who has to clean the mess you leave in there.
