Remember testing this game in the store, looking for a game to burn two months of hard earned allowances on…
I was impressed by the graphics a lot, seemed like a well produced game. And I did play the PAL-version, so guess it wasn’t AS awful controls. I wasn’t scared off, but I didn’t make it past the first screen…
…so the clerk handed me another game to try out instead, a little game called Legend of Zelda…
Wish I knew where that clerk is today, I want to send him some flowers.
I like that you can click on a review on cinemassacre then just watch and type the comments below, this new site is awesome. Love the effort you put into this videos James.

I just bought Dragon’s Lair for my SNES….uh….I assumed it wouldn’t be as bad as the NES version. Well, it seems easier, but still it’s a flaming pile of goat shit!!!
i have the game(the pal version) and what the nerd said the pal version is going smoother i did make it till the 3e stage so.
but the game itself is just a waste of the cardrige.
Hey James, since you did a Dragons Lair review, are you ever going to do a review of “Space Ace” for the SNES? That game is even more hilariously bad than this game. I’m sure you’ve played it before.
I remember I played the Arcade one on Gameboy Color spent a few days on that, did not have the patience for that shit, then was over at my aunt
‘s where I was looking through our old collection of games. And found this. Didn’t play it, instead sat my little cousin down and left. 2 hours later he comes in kicks me in the nuts and calls me an asshole and leaves. Now I know why. XD
This was the first episode of AVGN I ever watched. I was in the Cricket store buying a new cell phone plan and came across a touchscreen phone on display with YouTube compatibility, and this episode just happened to be playing, I stood there in the store laughing my ass off, and like 3 or 4 other people started gathering behind me to see what was so funny, and they started laughing too.
Actually, there is a game boy color game just like the original arcade game. Look it up on Youtube, its amazing! I’m very certain the NES could have done the same thing with a cropped screen, so the image is smaller.
Why not do that then? Don’t know, you could say they never knew it could as of then, but then, why make a GBC title just like the original arcade machine. Actually, some home 8-bit computers featured something similar to the GBC game, so I guess they could have figured to do that.
Guess they wanted to make a side scroller out of it, but it should have been better.
You know, I used to see Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace in the arcade I went to as a kid all the time, and not once did I ever play it. It looked amazing, I mean its a Don Bluth animated feature, how could it not look amazing? I never knew how the game mechanics worked until I watched this video. I am so glad I never wasted any quarters on either of those games, and I am so glad I never wasted away one of my weekends renting this piece of NES garbage.
It’s easy to believe that the Game Boy Color and the NES are similar platforms. However, the Game Boy uses a Zilog Z80 processor which is almost four times as fast and powerful as the NES’s Ricoh 2A03. The Game Boy Color also has much more memory to work with (32K on board whereas the NES had something like 2). Thus, they are not closely the same and the NES is (probably) not powerful enough to run full-motion video games.
However, the reason for the butchered, side-scrolling port is only partially a matter of the console. One of the major factors was the tools available at the time. This game was made in the early 1990s and the technology to port full-motion-video to consoles didn’t exist until a couple of years after this game was released. Even when it did exist, it was done on consoles like the Sega CD where videos didn’t have anywhere near the fidelity of the originals (I believe Dragon’s Lair was ported to the Sega CD at some point, actually). There were systems that could handle high-fidelity video at that time, but they were extraordinarily expensive. I could go on but the main point I wanted to touch on was that the tools didn’t exist for those consoles and the technology just wasn’t powerful enough.
I haven’t personally looked at the Dragon’s Lair games on the home computers, but if they’re anything like the Arcade game and the Game Boy Color is anything like the home computer games, one reason for that may be the GBC’s Zilog Z80 Processor. That processor was used commonly for home computers back in the 80s (Sinclair comes to mind). The old z80 machines weren’t as powerful as the game boy in speed terms, but they had more ram than the consoles of the time and even the GBC which came many years later, so maybe they were just -barely- powerful enough to handle a game like Dragon’s Lair.
DON’T fuck the spammers! They’re unfuckable!!! (hmmm, I guess unfuckable isn’t a word. Nor is hmmm) If anything they should go fuck themselves!!! With cacti.
Hum, i played a lot of Neo Geo games, i own a NG DCZ and all the games the console has to offer and i think there only a few that arent as good but none to put on an AVGN IMHO.
@tannerboyter If you mean “when did he review it” then he never did. He just shot this scene for the intro. He sometimes does it and in the last Q&A (at Magfest 2012, the video is called “AVGN Panel”) he even mentioned that one clip.
Wow, I forgot just how quick he got sick of this piece of shit! Not that I can’t see why.I only got maybe a few feet further than he did before I shut it off(that was after numerous tries!!!). Thankfully I don’t own this miserable pile of rancid ass garbage and I’m pretty sure my pal from back in the day has long since gotten rid of the copy I played. I know it didn’t take him long to regret buying it.
As for the numerous ports of Dragon’s Lair, there are only a few which really recreate the arcade original well and of course the NES as much as I love it, was not capable of it. So they made a game to piss us off instead.
Yeah Dude you have totaly right..i mean think about it, this game costs in the past 60 freakin Dollars and you buy this fucking shit, put in your nes and BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!A Big Shit Bomb explodes right IN YOUR FACE..
Thats pretty cool M Henderson. I think this fucking game is impossible to beat.fuck this game and fuck the company who make this piece of shit to kidding us
Nice try buddy.. But our “french avgn” did better than you (yes, we have one really famous, who also makes some old shitty games reviews ^^..). He showed us the Password system, which is really a bullshit ! Not a classic system, you really have to show this one !
@Thrompz Mate, I know that James rules in what he does, and I really have a full respect for him, I’m just saying that there’s a fad in old games reviews, and this particular french reviewer is really stand out from the crowd (Of course, he is only known by french geeky people..). That’s also why I put “…” , just to compare and simplify my point..
@Paul Leclerc I know who you’re talking about: “Joueur du Grenier”, (Attic Gamer). His videos are awesome, and they are certainly more enjoyable for a French audience due to his way of humor and the local pop culture references. He is a worthy equivalent of the AVGN.
But it isn’t fair to compare.
James did this review 5 years ago, when his type of video game reviewing was still new. So of course it looks less elaborate than the things we have now.
Here’s a link of a speedrun someone managed to do with this game, it’s not really that long of a game but yeah it’s hard as hell, anyway you can presume the link is safe as it’s a youtube link
This Dragon’s Lair video is one of the most viewed this week !It’s not a coincidence, the “Joueur du grenier” brings to the AVGN video a few more viewers…That’s impressive, our french guy had a small impact on this website !(But nobody should compare them, they are both awesome in very different ways)
the “joueur du grenier” have finish the level 1,2,3 4 and he test the original version and the super NES version of dragon’s lair so shut up french power we are too strong on video games
@Khameleon I do agree that it wasn’t funny at all, but no need t be an asshole about it.

The original Dragon’s Lair looked pretty awesome in the arcade back in the day! This game, however, looks like a pile of Rancor fecal matter mixed with whatever Jabba the Hutt threw up a couple weeks beforehand. 1983 was the year Return of the Jedi came out, so I made a Star Wars reference.
Just thought I’d mention that this video inspired me to do a remake of this game. Why remake a shitty game? To (hopefully) make it better and less of a nightmare.
I played the C=64 version of this and absolutely lost my shit on the “elevator” level. Your timing had to be so insanely precise that no human could do it.

Second reason: This was five years ago.

Formula on how to sound like AVGN:
1. Say “I’d rather”
2. Insert verb that’s synonymous with ingesting or relates to procreation.
3. Add appropriate conjunction “a, the”
4. Add unpleasant body part or waste product of a random animal.
5. Finish with a body cavity or body part where the above would take place.
6. Scream it angrily.
Ex.
1. I’d rather,
2. snort,
3. a,
4. monkey’s urine,
5. up my nose,
6. !!!!!!
Have fun!
