Only thing I remember about this title is that we constantly had to change disks on the Amiga 500
neo geo review when
tannerboyter
Hum, i played a lot of Neo Geo games, i own a NG DCZ and all the games the console has to offer and i think there only a few that arent as good but none to put on an AVGN IMHO.
tannerboyter I mean Neo Geo CDZ, not DCZ XD
DON'T fuck the spammers! They're unfuckable!!! (hmmm, I guess unfuckable isn't a word. Nor is hmmm) If anything they should go fuck themselves!!! With cacti.
SoTH;
It's easy to believe that the Game Boy Color and the NES are similar platforms. However, the Game Boy uses a Zilog Z80 processor which is almost four times as fast and powerful as the NES's Ricoh 2A03. The Game Boy Color also has much more memory to work with (32K on board whereas the NES had something like 2). Thus, they are not closely the same and the NES is (probably) not powerful enough to run full-motion video games.
However, the reason for the butchered, side-scrolling port is only partially a matter of the console. One of the major factors was the tools available at the time. This game was made in the early 1990s and the technology to port full-motion-video to consoles didn't exist until a couple of years after this game was released. Even when it did exist, it was done on consoles like the Sega CD where videos didn't have anywhere near the fidelity of the originals (I believe Dragon's Lair was ported to the Sega CD at some point, actually). There were systems that could handle high-fidelity video at that time, but they were extraordinarily expensive. I could go on but the main point I wanted to touch on was that the tools didn't exist for those consoles and the technology just wasn't powerful enough.
I haven't personally looked at the Dragon's Lair games on the home computers, but if they're anything like the Arcade game and the Game Boy Color is anything like the home computer games, one reason for that may be the GBC's Zilog Z80 Processor. That processor was used commonly for home computers back in the 80s (Sinclair comes to mind). The old z80 machines weren't as powerful as the game boy in speed terms, but they had more ram than the consoles of the time and even the GBC which came many years later, so maybe they were just -barely- powerful enough to handle a game like Dragon's Lair.
That's my best guess, honestly.
Actually, there is a game boy color game just like the original arcade game. Look it up on Youtube, its amazing! I'm very certain the NES could have done the same thing with a cropped screen, so the image is smaller.
Why not do that then? Don't know, you could say they never knew it could as of then, but then, why make a GBC title just like the original arcade machine. Actually, some home 8-bit computers featured something similar to the GBC game, so I guess they could have figured to do that.
Guess they wanted to make a side scroller out of it, but it should have been better.
This was the first episode of AVGN I ever watched. I was in the Cricket store buying a new cell phone plan and came across a touchscreen phone on display with YouTube compatibility, and this episode just happened to be playing, I stood there in the store laughing my ass off, and like 3 or 4 other people started gathering behind me to see what was so funny, and they started laughing too.
I remember I played the Arcade one on Gameboy Color spent a few days on that, did not have the patience for that shit, then was over at my aunt
's where I was looking through our old collection of games. And found this. Didn't play it, instead sat my little cousin down and left. 2 hours later he comes in kicks me in the nuts and calls me an asshole and leaves. Now I know why. XD
The animations of this game makes me remember the Simpsons joke where Milhouse plays Waterworld on A Arcade machine.
I loved the arcade version of this game, it came out in some shitty UK PS mag, and I thought it was great.
Then I played the NES version after watching this, holy fuckballs. What a mess. Fuck it.
Hey James, since you did a Dragons Lair review, are you ever going to do a review of "Space Ace" for the SNES? That game is even more hilariously bad than this game. I'm sure you've played it before.
why dont u do a review on the king of the monsters 2 or watever the game was in the opening or of the console it was on
I played a little of this game online, and I also can't believe that they made and release a game of this caliber.
i have the game(the pal version) and what the nerd said the pal version is going smoother i did make it till the 3e stage so.
but the game itself is just a waste of the cardrige.
i owned this game until the night that i decided to play it it took me 4 hours to get to stage 3
this is the most frustrating game ever made
it's shit for the birds
I just bought Dragon's Lair for my SNES....uh....I assumed it wouldn't be as bad as the NES version. Well, it seems easier, but still it's a flaming pile of goat shit!!!
I like that you can click on a review on cinemassacre then just watch and type the comments below, this new site is awesome. Love the effort you put into this videos James.
Best regards
Kobbern :)
Remember testing this game in the store, looking for a game to burn two months of hard earned allowances on...
I was impressed by the graphics a lot, seemed like a well produced game. And I did play the PAL-version, so guess it wasn't AS awful controls. I wasn't scared off, but I didn't make it past the first screen...
...so the clerk handed me another game to try out instead, a little game called Legend of Zelda...
Wish I knew where that clerk is today, I want to send him some flowers.
You know, I used to see Dragon's Lair and Space Ace in the arcade I went to as a kid all the time, and not once did I ever play it. It looked amazing, I mean its a Don Bluth animated feature, how could it not look amazing? I never knew how the game mechanics worked until I watched this video. I am so glad I never wasted any quarters on either of those games, and I am so glad I never wasted away one of my weekends renting this piece of NES garbage.
1st!
