Episode notes by Mike Matei:
- In episode 26 AVGN reviews the Sega 32. Games reviewed: Primal Rage, Doom, Virtua Fighter & Star Wars Arcade.
- During the episode the Nerd talks about buying the 32X at a flee market for two dollars and fifty cents. This is true, I was at the flee market with James. He also bought the Sega CD there as well.
Funny Quotes:
The Sega CD had its place in history. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a piece of sh#t, but it had a certain appeal. The 32X is the real deal. It sucks. Oh, God it sucks. You plop it on the top of the Genesis like they’re mating. God, I mean, do you think that’s enough add-ons? It doesn’t even look aesthetically presentable. I mean, it’s just like an ugly tumor. I mean did they really need all this bullsh#t leeching on the Genesis? That poor Genesis is just thinking, “Oh please God, take this sh#t off me.”

got one of these beasts as a kid. man what a bitch to wire up and plug in.
April 12, 2010 at 2:00 am
well good thing im only 12 years old so i never played this piece of gar-bitch!
April 25, 2010 at 10:15 am
I remember getting the 32x with a couple of games for my 15th birthday, even back then it wasn’t good.
But I enjoyed Star Wars Arcade and playing Doom on a home console has cool at the time.
Again, 32x is mostly crap, but I’ll still play mine from time to time.
April 28, 2010 at 12:35 am
About 8 months I finally bought a 32X. The only reason I bought it because I wanted complete my genesis. It came with 3 games. Doom, Motor Cross Champion, and Virtua Fighter. They all suck including Doom. Like James Said Doom is much better on SNES.
April 30, 2010 at 1:22 am
I got a 32X for $20 a couple of weeks ago, and I liked the 32X version of Doom. It was actually really good, even though the music is mediocre. It looks terrible on top of the Genesis and was annoying to get connected, but it’s not bad at all.
Even though I like the system pretty well, I do love this video. Even when I like the game (or in the case the system) being ripped on, I always love the AVGN videos.
May 13, 2010 at 11:40 pm
At one time back in the 90′s I had a 32x for my sega. I don’t have it anymore. I really don’t remember what happen to it. I think I gave it away. I saw no big change in the game play. Nice video tho.
May 14, 2010 at 6:33 am
Yeah back then when you bought stuff like this you really didn’t notice what a waste it was! I Keep all my old Video games mainly for use for reviewing games on my website, but also for the Nostalgia..
May 26, 2010 at 3:42 am
Good Thing I was Born In 1995 so I didnt need to play and see all that shit.
June 3, 2010 at 9:39 am
I’m quite blessed to have a plug board thing where the plugs go sideways
June 6, 2010 at 2:12 am
God….I’m glad I ignored all this crap….I was a Nintendo kid and was so glad to see Sega go down the toilet.
July 4, 2010 at 1:56 pm
though it was fucking shit
i loved the ps1
every game i played i thought was fukin awesome
July 17, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Will the Sega CD and 32X hook up to the old sytle Genesis or just the second model?
May 7, 2013 at 4:51 pm
Old, yes. I got Genesis and Sega CD when they first came out, followed by the 32-X.
August 11, 2010 at 3:03 am
Sega made a lot of mistakes with its consoles. They even screwed up the launch of the Saturn by making a surprise launch announcement at E3 in 1995 by telling everyone in attendance that the console was launching that day instead of in September as was planned. People were pissed at that. No games were available at launch time, no game magazine or other media would have the story out for a month at the very least , there were supply problems where sometimes a store wouldn’t get any consoles at all, and KB Toys wouldn’t even carry the system out of anger at the surprise.
i also had a friend who had both the Sega CD and 32X and he loved them. I was playing them at his house and I didn’t see anything special. Playing Night Trap was damn annoying, too. Either he was on some really good drugs or he was just lying to himself. Next time I see him, I’ll ask.
September 29, 2010 at 12:41 pm
The 32X is a Tumor!
October 20, 2010 at 4:14 pm
I agree that the 32X should have beet it’s own console. The only game on this thing I’m interested in playing is Star Wars Arcade, because I’m a die hard Star Wars fan.
October 20, 2010 at 8:45 pm
Damn talk about add-on hell!!! All that shit is a jumbled clusterfuck of a mess!!!! And to think I actually wanted the 32x! What a piece of Garshit! Yup thats garbage and shit all rolled into one!!
October 27, 2010 at 3:29 pm
I had a 32x and Sega CD as they died. you could get them for around 30 bucks or less. the Sega CD was run there were alot of good games for it. one of the ones that will always stick in my mind is Popful Mail. Take Zelda 2 and add funny voice acting… Great stuff. Or Lunar was good.. of course theres Sonic CD.
November 2, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Nice shot! The Nerd is an archer too! There was one 32X game I wished he reviewed; Spider-Man Web of Fire.
December 13, 2010 at 4:16 pm
I’ve never had a Sega CD or 32X, but I do have a Sega Megadrive (which is a Genesis) with sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. I still want all the other Sonic games and consoles. I like old skool gaming better than new games. :p
December 28, 2010 at 7:33 am
On Primal Rage..well I can kinda relate to how James complains about combos being up because in this Street Fighter wannabe game called “BlazBlue Continuum Shift” There are SO many combos that require pressing up. Like on Jin & Haku-men..Even on Litchi. It’s fucking impossible!
January 13, 2011 at 9:05 pm
@ Galaga Master
That’s the sole reason i gto DOOM and DOOM 2 for the Xbox 360 and i even have DOOM 3 ur right because i hate the computer version my mouse sucks for it.
February 5, 2011 at 12:03 am
can’t believe you set the 32X on fire. LOL!
March 1, 2011 at 2:38 pm
Yeah I completely agree with you on everything in this video. A neighborhood friend had all of the above when all that stuff was still relevant and it was madness. Sweet composit bow by the way, and a perfect sendoff for the garbage it is.
It’s one of the biggest, dumbest attempts to milk every last dollar they could out of their customers I’ve ever seen in gaming. It’s even worse than the N64 gameboy cartridge controller attachment thing, the “transfer pack”, cause while that thing seemingly only worked on the pokemon stadium games (maybe I’m wrong), at least it added some element of fun and was cheap.
July 2, 2011 at 10:49 am
oh is he left handed?
One thing that pisses ME off doesn’t have anything to do with this episode or avgn. I’m just confused of why does the cinemassacre’s account’s password have to be so tricky that you can’t remember it? I mean, James is always whining about shitty passwords in games etc. (no offens. I think it’s funny :D). Well that’s all. Greetings from Fin again!
July 26, 2011 at 12:38 pm
being born in 1999, i had nothing but things to look forward to, my first console was a gameboy advance sp then i got the gamecube which is frickin’ awesome then i got an xbox 360 and even later a wii and then a ps3 but for some reason i also have a ps1 and ps2 and oh yeah i also got my ds and my psp go but for some reason ive never even seen an original xbox let alone play it. P.S im not sure if you have a sega saturn but id like to see a review of it, or maybe the dreamcast or 3do.
July 30, 2011 at 11:45 am
lol both of its slots are getting fucked at the same time and on top of tht it looks like its on life support nice vid lol
August 2, 2011 at 11:38 am
I really wont like to be that poor sega genesis….
August 5, 2011 at 3:55 pm
Doom is also one of my all time favorite fps. and by the way, did you actually destroy your 32x or did you have and extra?
August 20, 2011 at 3:20 pm
As an owner of the 32X (I pestered my mum for one for ages…I was such a sucker…Can’t believe magazines said it improved the look of your Megadrive games and I believed it.) I can verify mine was somewhat faulty.
If you played Megadrive games on it for a length of time, they’d start to blink. The colour would look a little grey and wrong, not exactly negative, but just not what they should have been. The more you played, the shorter the gap between blinks until eventually it was constant.
As for 32X games, it would distort a graphical layer, pulling it off to one side. Chaotix, for example, would have a layer of the background flickering, juddering and leaning to one side as if it was a curtain and someone was pulling the hanging part while the top was nailed in place. Again, longer you played the worse it got.
But I loved Chaotix and my parents too much to truely complain about it. I just put up with it like it was nothing.
August 20, 2011 at 4:28 pm
Here’s an idea for plugging them in, first plug in the genesis into the wall then plug in the power strip in then the CD and 32X
August 29, 2011 at 1:39 pm
hahaha
please god get this shit off me
September 13, 2011 at 8:55 pm
I had a 32X as a Kid and it broke my mortal kombat 2
September 14, 2011 at 6:34 pm
That’s right burn that piece of shit!
September 17, 2011 at 3:38 am
I bought my 32X From Pic-N-Save as it was going out of business I think. I thought the Star Wars game was alright… but that was about it. What a waste of money that was.
October 9, 2011 at 1:56 am
In answer to your question James, about what were they thinking and what kind of marketing was that. You actually answered your own question when you said people were to smart to be suckered in. Sega obviously thought they could outsmart customers by producing an ad on while keeping us waiting longer than the Japanese for the Saturn. In other words make a huge profit off the ad ons and then make a huge profit off the Saturn. Im assuming the 32X games were not compatible with the Saturn so that gamers would need to own one and a CD anyway to be able to play all the games.
October 16, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Im surprised the stand alone 32X wasn’t going to be called the sega URANUS!! HAHAA
October 17, 2011 at 2:46 pm
wow the genisis had it hard in the old gays
February 7, 2012 at 11:49 pm
Curse you monster! Now I can’t quit picturing a bunch of alternative lifestyle nursing home residents being jammed by a Genesis!
October 25, 2011 at 2:10 pm
That console was that shitty that it didn’t made it’s way to mexico!
I love all your videos because i realize how much money we saved on videogames because all the shitty games didn’t came to mexico so we only had good games (Expensives as gold) but good ones
November 5, 2011 at 8:22 am
Getting gang-raped while on Life Support… on man o_O;
January 6, 2012 at 6:26 pm
@Polarthief lol XD
November 8, 2011 at 12:57 pm
Funny thing that soon enough modern (or “modern”) consoles need to get attachments somewhat like these too? Why? Last few consoles ALL had 10-year plan. Every one of them died in 6 and current generation is going on seventh. If console developers want to keep up with PC they NEED to upgrade their consoles.
They just need to make it AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE. “Open the box, put it in, press the ‘ON’-button.”, because PC is soooo complex and they don’t want to sacrifice their consumers for the big, bad PC…
February 12, 2012 at 9:37 am
too bad commercials teach kids “it’s all about the graphics” and “old equals shit” IMO it should be about the GAMES instead. Thing is I don’t wanna wait for my PC to boot up but the WII takes just almost as long and my NES? Up to 10 Frames (1/3 of a second). Still have to wait for my TV tube to warm up
November 17, 2011 at 11:04 pm
You bring up so many good points, James. Having all those power adapters was simplistically a pain in the ass, and the power strip… I don’t even remember them being around when I was a kid. I had to run two different basic extension chords. Good times.
November 17, 2011 at 11:05 pm
k
November 21, 2011 at 9:20 pm
LOL, the power things are the power adapters/power supplies. Without them the consoles would have to be the voltage of the outlet.
November 28, 2011 at 4:06 am
@LoganPorter We know this, the problem is not having the big box but the fact that the box is at the end of the cable so it takes a lot of room
February 1, 2012 at 12:34 am
@Rowdain @LoganPorter Exactly. There’s no reason they can’t do it the same way they did with the Atari 5200 example in the video. My laptop has a power block that’s situated in the middle of the cable instead of the end, and it ends in a normal sized plug. Wall warts should have been phased out years ago.
November 25, 2011 at 1:31 am
I had a 32X as a teenager. The Sega Genesis by itself was 32-bit to start with, considering it had a Motorola 68000 processor which is 32-bit. But Sega didn’t want to push their luck advertising the system as 32-bit back in that era, even though it was truly 32-bit. Just goes to prove bits aren’t everything.
November 26, 2011 at 2:30 am
Yeah the boxes on the plugs are the solid state power supplies. Long story short they turn an A/C voltage into a D/C that the game systems/computers use. Computers and consoles have alot of solid state components such as transistors and processors that only work with D/C, and since electricity is distributed to our houses in A/C, it has to be converted. Hence the box, but there is no reason that the box cant be at the center of the cord and it end in a small plug like my laptop cord.
December 6, 2011 at 10:52 pm
good information, good reason to be pissed… or be pissed on
December 7, 2011 at 3:41 pm
He removed the “I don’t own a Saturn” -text from the video because he got sick of people sending him those systems.
December 26, 2011 at 10:01 pm
I remember when my Sega 32X melted part of my Genesis. lol
January 11, 2012 at 1:39 am
TBH I loved my 32X! I sooo miss playing “Black Throne” and blowing the slaves heads off right after they would give me the help/info I needed. It was a mistake the first time and I laughed my ass off! Also this was a “Blizzard” game!!! Yea the guys who brought us “StarCraft” And “WarCraft” made a 32X game!!! It’s totally worth hunting down if there is a emu! I have never looked for one.
Still the video rings true. The system in a business sense was a total flop! And the hook-up is to this day the most frustrating thing ever! I also owned the “Model One” and it took about 2 hours of trial and error. Bear in mind I was probably around 8-10 years old at the time. I had some weird games.
I forget the name but I even had a game where you play as a HUMMINGBIRD! I think it was trying to jump on the success wagon with “Ecco The Dolphin” which personally I found to be complete shit. Stage two was SO FUCKING HARD! I wish Ecco was reviewed on here. But I am not asking. You are clearly occupied.
March 3, 2012 at 7:39 pm
@DaveMcGrath that game where you play has a humminbird is called Kolibri and , like ecco the dolphin it was really a trippy and unique experience!
January 16, 2012 at 9:23 pm
This is what always amazed me about “Sega people.” I mean, i wasn’t a “Nintendo person…” but people always tried to play that “Sega people vs. Nintendo people” garbage. I’m like, if you’re gonna pick a side, why the hell Sega? That shit makes no sense. Sega went “Super Shredder” and STILL fell short of the good ole 16-bit SNES.
February 1, 2012 at 12:27 am
@quezocotl Sega still had some great games in the Genesis library, as well as some pretty stellar Saturn games. The problem was there’s always more money in consoles and peripherals, and Sega just tried wayy too hard to capitalize on that.
If they had just focused on the Genesis, later the Saturn and maybe a new handheld like Nintendo did, the story might have played out differently, but instead we got crap like the Sega CD, 32x, CDx, an array of different controllers, light guns, etc. Gimmicks. Gamers got sick of being suckered by Sega and finally went to Nintendo or the newcomer at the time, Sony.
In addition, while Saturn and Dreamcast did moderately well, neither did as well as the N64 or Playstation because of the decline in gamer trust, so Sega lost a ton of 3rd party support because game companies went with the systems they could sell more copies on. All of that ultimately sent Sega from the top of the game console mountain to a 3rd party game developer who now makes games for their arch rival, the big N.
Burn me once, shame on you, burn me twice, shame on me.
March 16, 2012 at 6:44 pm
@garou1911 I had both systems in different times; in comparison, SNES library and capabilities surpassed every single attempt Sega tried (besides using the mocking against Nintendo to make advertisings worth).
Not to mention Master System vs. Nes, or Game Gear vs. Game Boy.
Just making a top 100 games for every console will give you a hint. Of course, there’s Virgin’s Aladdin and blood on MKI. Wow.
Results were always there; a lot of people simply chose to be on the losing side (or to be fair, on the most money-throwing side) right from the beginning.
Hail SNES, in my opinion and overall, the best console of all time.

Angry Video Game Nerd,
you have work to do:

The sega 32X + Cd looks small compared to this^
February 5, 2012 at 10:52 am
Doom 32x = balls
February 13, 2012 at 11:46 pm
I was never against any game company, but I certainly had and still have more brand loyalty for Nintendo(if only because I’ve never had a Nintendo product go out on me, my NES model-001 is 25 years old and still going strong). Sega had some awesome games but they screwed up in making these unsightly add ons to the console rather than following Nintendo’s example of improving game capabilities with extra chips in the cartridges or doing what James suggested in releasing the 32x and Sega CD as stand alone consoles. I also believe that a little more work in the R&D and Marketing departments of SEGA back then could not have hurt them. It was still an exciting time to be a gamer with all the new technologies that were coming out in the 90′s and Sega played it’s part in that.
February 19, 2012 at 10:25 am
in the end did he really destroy the 32X?
February 26, 2012 at 9:42 pm
@vasilis I don’t see why not. I know for a fact from a different video that he has or has had at least two of them. He stacks one right on top of the other. He bought one for 2.50, and I’m guessing the second was a donation or he got it for a similar price.
February 26, 2012 at 9:41 pm
You know, I remember when I was 8, I couldn’t wait for this thing to come out. I played Knuckles Chaotix at Epcot in Florida, and even though I was looking at the complete product in front of me, I had to wait like a year and a half for it to come out so I could get one. Finally I got one for my birthday, and I couldn’t for the life of me get this unholy fucker of mothers to work. I remember taking it back to the store and the clerk asked if I wanted to try again, and I remember it as the first time I ever reasoned before.
It was at that time I realised that they only game I really wanted to play was Knuckles Chaotix, and that game confused the hell out of me. I let it go, and enjoyed my genesis as it was, and the damn thing faded away. Never had the CD either. Only game I wanted for that was Sonic CD, and I didn’t know it existed until I got the computer port of it on the very first computer my family ever owned, that bullshit grey boxed Packard Bell.
March 11, 2012 at 11:48 am
For me, Knckles’ Chaotix is a very good game, but it isn’t worth buying a 32x. It’s good, but it isn’t such an improvement over the genesis games. Cancelled Sonic Mars for the 32x was in true 3D and I can see the shitty 32 bits in it.

I wanted a 32x so bad for 32X-mas 1994. Nothing makes a child happier than getting them a game system THAT DIDN’T FUCKING WORK. Parents went back to Babbages (babbages, rofl) and got me an SNES. Best decision ever.
March 23, 2012 at 2:57 am
is that battletoads music at the start?
March 27, 2012 at 12:39 am
this gives a whole new meaning to “plugging” your product… what a piece of pretentious bullshit. Awesome review as always Nerd >:)
April 9, 2012 at 7:52 am
I always wanted a 32X. I rented one for a weekend with a few games.
After that I didn’t want a 32X.
July 8, 2012 at 6:08 pm
No it’s not a tuma! It’s just a headache.
Good video!

Funnily enough I recently found a Master System, complete with games, 3D glasses, and light gun. I was so excited it made me want to watch AVGN all over again. So I’ve been watching on and off the past few days, just watched this episode today. I went out to Goodwill (where I also ran across the Master System and just paid $4 total for two 32x games, Knuckles Chaotix and Doom. There were plenty more, enough to look like someone just dropped off their system and entire library of games, but sadly the system was nowhere to be found. Hopefully I’ll run into one soon at a Goodwill or flea market. Can’t believe the luck I’ve been having lately! I know my collection will never be as big as James’ as I just collect mostly for fun, but I love being able to check out these systems that I never had growing up…and even though some of them suck monkey nuts, you just gotta see for yourself sometimes!
December 13, 2012 at 6:49 am
The Sega Saturn has a connection cord that ends with a normal plug.
January 10, 2013 at 11:10 pm
The worst piece of shit I ever played on. YES AND WHAT A MESS!!!! The Genesis are cool!, but this shit can burn in hell. slow….

This system overall sucks, and it’s even worse than Jaguar, at least in my opinion, 32X is worse than Jaguar with god-awful music chip, especially Doom.
July 8, 2013 at 1:21 am
Star Wars was actually a really fucking kickass port of the Star Wars Arcade game. I loved playing that game, flying down the death star trench, flying snowspeers on hoth, riding jet bikes on endor…. It was a fucking blast!
July 10, 2013 at 3:58 am
Is there a place where the music used in these episodes can be found? A lot of the music I remember but can’t place and would love to be able to find the music for my personal collection
December 6, 2013 at 4:19 am
It wasn’t even worth the arrow!
January 26, 2014 at 2:21 pm
i know it didnt work out for sega but i kinda like the idea of putting together peaces to build a stronger system. i guess it was there idea to upgrade for a cheaper price instead of just buying a new system. just not excuted well i guess
March 25, 2015 at 1:56 pm
I agree it’s a good idea.
PC gamers do it all the time via upgrading.
I think a similar idea for consoles would be great, instead of having to buy a whole new system you can just upgrade it.
In fact I think that is what Steam are doing with their “Steam box” idea.
March 16, 2015 at 2:45 am
I love watching the 32x burn. It’s just so ridiculously satisfying.
March 25, 2015 at 1:54 pm
That se-cond piece of music from Doom on the SEGA sounds like my arse after a spicy curry…and I mean it sounds exactly the same too.
July 2, 2015 at 10:40 pm
And that’s why pivot power strip existed.
