You should do more Chronologically Confused videos

  • April 15, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I think you should do a Chronologically Confused video on the life of James Bond through both the books and the movies!

Sounds like a really big project!

  • April 28, 2010 at 8:18 pm

How about the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight/Jedi Academy series?

First there was Star Wars: Dark Forces

Next came Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

Then came Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast

Then came Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

    What the hell.

the naked gun videos are based on record types (vinals) like the 12 1/2 records and record size 33 1/3, if there were a 4 it would be 72

    • May 5, 2013 at 5:30 am

Are you high? It’s an extension of the slapstick nature of the movies. 2 1/2 is an exaggerated title, as is 33 1/3. It’s highlighting it’s own ludicrousness… That’s all.

Ah, nevermind. Troll Patrick. Should’ve known.

  • May 9, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Wow the really like to mess around with sequels, I had no idea the Final Fantasy games where in a completely wrong order..then again I have no interest in that series

  • luxou95

The Dynasty Warriors video game series is also kind of confusing, even though it is nowhere near some of the stuff in this video. All that happened was that the American version is one number ahead.

I agree with Solum you should make it a regular series like avgn, board james, you know whats bullshit ect.

call of duty is confusing too

    you got

    Call of duty
    Call of duty finest hour
call of duty 2 big red one
    call of duty 2
    call of duty 3
call of duty 4 modern warfare
call of duty world at war
Call of duty modern warfare 2
    Call of duty black ops
the next one will probably be mw3
but there’s a space between the modern warfares and mw2 is the sixth game so that’s damn confusing if your new to call of duty :(
but mw2 is the best game ever.. so i don’t care about the confusing name :)
by the way james i love this video and all your others

The titles to the Naked Gun sequels are a joke obviously. It goes Naked Gun, Naked Gun 2 1/2, and Naked Gun 33 1/3. It’s a stupid joke, but that’s naked Gun for ya. I assume he really knows that, and that that’s what he says he’s just fucking around about at the end of the video.

  • August 2, 2010 at 10:49 pm

I like this video a lot. Good one, I mean all of them are good.

thats like the predator trilogy well the director keep saying its a restart to the series so what is it a sequel a prequel or a remake i cant tell even the name sounds a little bit misleading predators the original title was predator requiem but they saved that title for ALIEN vs PREDATOR 2 but its called ALIEN vs PREDATOr requiem what the hec? it would be fine if they called alien3 ALIENS 3 instead cause yeah theres another alien but we only see it till the end where sigourney weaver dives into the magma i am so glad they made a third movie but why call it PREDATORS why not PREDATORS III its confusing.

  • venom 51007

    August 10, 2010 at 12:01 pm

ALSO THE NEW LEGO STAR WARS III THE CLONE WARS video game wouldn’t that be the fourth game even though the complete saga was the third game in the series then the new one would be called LEGO STAR WARS IV THE CLONE WARS WHAT THE CRAPCATCTUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    August 18, 2010 at 9:11 am

Love this video. You made a lot of good points James. The only thing you left out was that the final fantasy titles aren’t really related to each other. They have different characters, different plots, and don’t play off of one another (except for x and x-2, but those two sucked anyways) so…I don’t know, I think it makes it a bit different. Nice shout out to final fantasy 3 though, that was my shit!

another game that was confusing was the star wars game revenge of th sith i was like wtf happened to phantom menace and attack of the clones i dont understand why they skipped 1 and 2 and just went along with three and monster jam was another game series where it got confusing first it was monster jam maximum destruction , monster jam and then monster jam urban assault what the hec now coming in 2011 is the sequel to batman arkham asylum is called batman arkham city and the army men series i dont know the order but the first one i got was air attack then air attack then i got sarges heroes and then sarges heroes 2 u know i could think of movies and video games that have confusing releases like naruto ultimate ninja 5 isn’t sopposed to make an americain release WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and its only sopposed to be released in europe and japan they released the first 4 but not 5 come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And heres just one other series that was numbered up to 8 until Goes To Hell and X FRIDAY THE 13TH
    FRIDAY THE 13TH Part II
    FRIDAY THE 13TH Part III
FRIDAY THE 13TH Part IV Final Chapter
FRIDAY THE 13TH Part V New Beginning (sucked)
FRIDAY THE 13TH Part VI Jason Lives
FRIDAY THE 13TH Part VII NEW BLOOD (AWESOME)
FRIDAY THE 13TH Part VIII Takes Manhatton (didn’t care)
    JASON GOES TO HELL (WTF!!!!)
JASON X (sucked and WTF again!!!!!)
FREDDY VS JASON (AWESOME but still WTF) where did the numbers go after VIII.

I remember the advertisements for the Nintendo 64 and the adition to the number 64 to almost every game for that console.

I don’t mind the numbering of the Halloween, Star Trek, and Alien films. I just do the research and enjoy the movies. Also, the subtitling helps alot.

The Cinema Snob talked about the Zombie series during his reviews of Zombies 4, 5, and 6.

I love your joke about The Naked Gun trilogy, James. Pure comedy.

  • mcg413

    June 16, 2011 at 10:01 am

The titles of the Naked Gun sequels are actually jokes. The second movie in the series is called 2 1/2, but it’s really 2, and 33 1/3 is really just 3. That’s the reason no one can find Naked Guns 3-32, because they don’t exist.

  • RLIsomaa

    June 21, 2011 at 10:59 am

I found a few of the missing Naked Gun sequels at a garage sale, but they were pretty shitty. A completely different cast, bad acting and too much nudity. I guess the titles kinda gave it away: “Naken Gun 5: Big Black Gun”, “Naked Gun 8: Shot in the Face” and “Naked Gun 27: Is that a gun in your pants or are you just happy to see me?”

  • SilverDragon

    July 31, 2011 at 9:56 pm

Apparently, the reason why they stop numbering sequels after a while is a marketing issue: some believe that people seeing something like Mortal Kombat 9 or another big number will think that the series is over extended and watered down because it’s been up so long.
And I chose Mortal Kombat as an example on purpose: Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, then suddenly there’s all that fuss about Scorpion not being there and Sub Zero being unmasked, so it’s Ultimate MK 3 and MK trilogy. That I can understand. After come MK4 and then… Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. And look at the title for MK Deadly Alliance: it’s got a big V shaped blade. You just know they wanted to call it MK 5 until someone jumped in. And look at what we have now: Mortal Kombat again, which is a remake/alternate story of MK 1,2, and 3. Don’t get me wrong, I love the serie, but why can’t they just use numbers.

  • phoenix252005

    August 7, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Damn that really is confusing! Why cant they just use the same titles here in the US as they do for the original movie?!?! The world may never know…

  • August 10, 2011 at 11:01 am

    Hey Mike.

In “The Naked Gun,” the numbering convention of the sequels was a joke. There weren’t sixty-something movies, there were only a handful. They just called it stuff like “2 1/2″ because it sounded funny.

  • JimmyTheKeybladeWielder

  • SuperJaneEyre

    August 15, 2011 at 1:10 am

  • MarioWii

There are only 3 Naked Gun movies. The reason the sequel is called Naked Gun 2 1/2 is because they were trying to be funny. Same thing with Naked Gun 33 1/3.

I cant stop laughing when Im thinking about how AVGN predicted the title for the 4th Rambo movie. As showed in the cronologically confused film, the movie was first titled “John Rambo”. This was just working title though and for the actual release they for some reason (maybe because of AVGN :D ) decided to retitle it to just “Rambo” in Northamerica and most European countries and to “Rambo 4″ in some asian countries. However in some places they kept the working title as the final title e.g. in Germany (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rambo_%28Film%29). :D :D :D

@senna4ever 331/2 is the 3rd naked gun movie cause back in the day 331/2 would be on record discs i’m not talking about lazer discs and i know there big as record discs but that’s not what i’m talking about just saying the director was just joking with the audience that’s all.

    • January 31, 2012 at 6:29 pm

@Tekkenfan Your’e right, but hear this: actually the American Alpha 2 was slightly modified from the Japanese Zero 2, adding like Evil Ryu and Guile, so it is a different version. Then of course these additions were also made for the japanese market, in a new revision called Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha! Wtf! A crossover between the Street Fighter Zero series and the Street Fighter Alpha series? So basically Street Fighter is also the only series to be able to crossover itself! Impressive!

  • Tekkenfan

    December 23, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Oh and by the way you know the movie predators you know the prequel to the predator movies well there’s gonna be another Alien movie like a prequel it’s gonna be called Prometheus it’s gonna be released on June 8th 2012.

Street Fighter II Chronology is messed up; the order as it should be is more or less as follows:
      ————————–
      SF  – Street Fighter
SFII- Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
SFII:CE – Street Fighter II: Champion Edition (SFII’ in Japan)
SFIIT:HF – Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting (SFII’ Turbo in Japan)
Street Fighter II: Turbo Hyper Fighting (SNES)
Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition (Genesis)
SSFII – Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
SSFII T – Super Street Fighter II Turbo (SSFII X In Japan)
Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival (GBAdvance)
      SFA – Street Fighter Alpha (Zero in Japan) 1-2- 2′ (PSX/Saturn only)-3
Street Fighter EX (Plus Alpha was PSX’s version)
      Street Fighter EX 2
      Street Fighter EX 3
      Street Fighter III
      Street Fighter III Double Impact
      Street Fighter III 3rd Strike
      Hyper Street Fighter II
      Street Fighter IV
Super Street Fighter IV (I think this one’s gonna get the path shortened when they finally decide to release a SF V)
      ————–
PSX’s/Saturn’s Street Fighter Collection Includes SSF II And SSF II Turbo + Street Fighter Apha 2 Gold (SFZero 2 Dash in Japan)
PSX’s/Saturn’s Street Fighter Collection II Includes SFII: WW, SFII: CE and SFII T:HF (Yeah; the second part brought the older games). The same games among other Capcom Titles are available on Capcom Generations for the same consoles.
PS2′s/Xbox’s Capcom Classics Collection Vol.01 Includes the same games that Capcom generation, whereas Vol.02 includes the port of the Original Street Fighter.
PS2′s/XboX’s SF Anniversary Collection includes Hyper Street Fghter II and SF III 3rd Strike.
PS2′s/XboX’s – Street Fighter Apha (Zero in Japan) Anthology includes the whole trilogy plus Pocket Fighter -a SD Beat’em up with Characters from SF and Darkstalkers inspired on the Puzzle Fighter series-
Didn’t count “the movie” -inhuman aberration- because that was NOT a movie for Street Fighter – apanese Street Fighter II: The Movie truly THE movie- and so “the game” wasn’t a Street Fighter either.———————Holy motherfucking shit of a mess. I spent nearly 2 hours writing this. Hell, i wanna play ANY Street Fighter right now…
Oh, and about chronology is easier: SF, SFAlpha, SFII, SFIII, SF IV. EX is regarded as a spin-off.

I spent nearly 2 hours writing this. Hell, i wanna play ANY Street Fighter right now…
Oh, and about chronology is easier: SF, SFAlpha, SFII, SFIII, SF IV. EX is regarded as a spin-off.

I didn’t know there is so much sequels to Street Fighters and even Megaman…And Megaman is also Rockman in Japan, released on the Sega Saturn !

I disagree that Rocky is perfect (up to Rocky V of course). I mean I disagree that not having subtitles is perfect. Well better nothing than cliche subtitles, but I believe is perfect when we have both the number and a subtitle to help identify, like in Star Wars! You can say SW is fucked up because it wasn’t released in order, but on the contrary I’d say it’s evident they paid attention to it, so it’s even better. Who cares if people don’t know what came out before, as long as they can perfectly fit the episode in the continuity.Talking about Rocky with my brother or friends it’s always like: “Remember Ivan Drago? that guy from Rocky III?” “No, it was Rocky IV!” “What are you talking about? It’s 1-Apollo, 2-Lang, 3-Drago!” “No, Rocky II was a rematch with Apollo!” “Oh, you’re right…” I mean it would be simpler if they were called something like Rocky II: The Rematch; Rocky III: Rocky vs Mr. T; Rocky IV: Rocky vs. He-Man and Rocky V: Skip This One.

LMAO so HARD I roll on the floor : )

I have many of these movies so I know how it feels to be confused over movie titles. Besides I live in Norway and we like to put our own name on the movies so if I want to find the original movies with the original name etc I must check a LOT. Japan has one name, then USA another and UK switch it around and then comes my country to KILL it off with another new name.

    It’s a MESS :(

Not to mention, the new Final Fantasy 13 2, not 132, but thirteen-two like WTF

    • ShaunDreclin

      March 14, 2012 at 8:26 pm

@Quinndelin in the final fantasy series, the games dont have any continuity or connection with each other. 10-2 was the direct sequel to 10, and 13-2 is the direct sequel to 13.

    February 18, 2012 at 1:54 pm

and for the ps2 games like ratchet and clank and jak and daxter, the first ratchet game was just ratchet and clank, then ratchet and clank going commando, then ratchet and clank up your arsenal, then ratchet:deadlocked (what happened to clank?) then the psp games, then with the ps3 games, they were called ratchet and clank FUTURE, and only certain copies of the games had numbers in the title, and not the name, and the jak games, the first one was the precursor legacy, then it’s jak II, then jak 3, then Jak X, but wouldn’t you think they would use IV instead of X? confusing, right? if you don’t keep track of the dates they were all released, its all really a big mindf***

      March 22, 2012 at 2:14 am

@Quinndelin Deadlocked was separate from the main series. It doesn’t really have Clank in it and it’s not supposed to be the sequel to Up Your Arsenal. The Future series, which are all on the PS3, is also a separate series that started a different storyline then the ones on PS2. The R&C series is in my top 3 favorite game series, I fuckin love them.

Part of the problem with numerical sequels has come from the fact that, with ever increasing business coming from the Pacific Rim, the number “4″ is considered unlucky in that part of the world. Thus, movie producers sensitive to the global market avoid “4″ in their titles, retitling it instead into something non-numerical. If you think that’s a ridiculous superstition of the East, just try finding a 13th floor in any building in the USA.

And while “5″ has no bad reputation attatched to it, you obviously can’t have a “5″ when you didn’t have a “4″, so further sequels fall into the same trap. Thus, it appears that the days of linear sequential sequels are indeed… numbered *rimshot*

Don’t know when you’ll see this but when I started the video it only was 47 seconds long and covers only the contra stuff. Thought it was strange since I can see the whole thing on YouTube.

O_O what the holy?! The video’s different! It’s now a 45-second rant on the title of Contra 3! don’t get me wrong, it’s a good rant worthy of the vid, but what happened to the rest?! O_O

  • Coolclouds

    November 12, 2012 at 11:18 am

Why is this video 47 seconds long? It seems to be cutting off before it actually finishes playing the whole video.

  • November 18, 2012 at 11:42 am

Hey the Contra thing is a mistake. That was a deleted scene (deleted for inaccuracy.) It wasn’t supposed to be uploaded in place of the other video. We’re going to get it fixed very soon.

The Mad Max movies are an example of this subject. The first Mad Max movie was released in 1979 as just Mad Max, and it was a big box office hit in its native Australia, and was moderately successful in other parts of the world. But it was a flop in America. A sequel came out in 1981, and it was called Mad Max 2, but in the USA, since the 1979 original was a flop, it was called The Road Warrior. It’s also referred to nowadays as Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. But when the third movie came out in 1985, the numberings started getting omitted because it was titled Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Now a 4th movie is coming soon, and it will be called Mad Max: Road Fury. English actor Tom Hardy (who played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) is going to be playing max Rockatansky rather than Mel Gibson (seems apt, considering Mel Gibson is in his 50′s). The X-Men movies were like this too. The first X-Men movie released in 2000 was just called X-Men. The sequel, released in 2003, was called X2: X-Men United, X-Men 2 or just X2. But the third movie also started omitting the numbers. The third movie was unleashed in 2006 under the title X-Men: The Last Stand, not X-Men 3 or X3: The Last Stand. I’m not going to be saying X-Men Origins: Wolverine because that was Wolverine’s solo movie and not an X-Men movie.

James you are correct. Alien Ressurection sounds like a joke and it actually is a huge joke. A kick in the nuts. Although when AVP came out it kicked us in the balls with rusty nails.

  • January 28, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Absolutely love this video. I work in a DVD store and we sell mostly second hand items, so there’s a lot of older movies and series with missing sequels etc. half the time we have NO clue. I always smile when someone comes in asking for a certain sequel and I remember this video :D Trying to remember the rambo and alien series order of titles for a customer is difficult!!!

Well, Contra was released in late September of 1992 while Contra 3 was released in April, so Contra Force could be seen as the fourth game (with a not-so-clever pun on Four) or a spin-off.

Umm. There’s something missing here… It’s only the contra thing. Somebody, please fix this.
Also, I can’t find the “AVGN: Chronologically Confused About The Legend Of Zelda Timeline” without using the search. I don’t know if it’s taken off for a reason, since it’s not like the other AVGN videos… but in the other hand, I can still find this one. Strange..

  • April 22, 2013 at 11:38 pm

    Hello, James.
I noticed there are some parts missing in this video. Some parts that added some charm to it. I guess it has to do with your account being banned from YouTube a few months ago.
When you start describing the Halloween movies, the video starts scrolling the movie posters again, leaving out images from a few Halloween movies. And when you describe the Star Trek series, at the end I remember a clip from Spok saying “most illogical”. It was removed too. And so on!
I think that sucks. That kind of rules should really apply to the Internet, where everything belongs to anyone, but I guess I’m very mistaken. Well, crap,
It really brought me down, because this may affect future videos where you won’t be able to include movie footage to comment and express your points of view and have a good time at the same time.
Keep up with the awesome job you do.
    Regards.

  • November 21, 2013 at 4:18 am

In Rocky’s defense (Devil’s advocateStyle), I think it’s ‘artistically OK’ to name the final movie of a series with a badass/pretentious subtitle. IF it’s the damned final movie.
